The introduction of the World Wide Web presented changes in the world of academic publishing. Publishers are looking for alternatives to the traditional text-based, paper-based manuscript. Since the mid 1990's, the number of academic electronic journals increased from less than a 100 to several thousands. However, the extent of the penetration of academic electronic journals and the final form they will assume is unclear. This article introduces four scenarios. The scenarios describe four possible forms of academic journals and are based on the economic viability of electronic journals and their acceptance. The scenarios include status quo, replacement, co-existence, and ubiquitous outcomes for academic journals. It is shown that if the ubiquitous scenario occurs, a number of issues must be resolved which are independent of individual journals. Despite electronic book (e-book) piracy being viewed by many rightsholders as the greatest contemporary challenge to the publishing industry, there is little research evaluating different anti-piracy methods, and explaining how they work. This paper explores the technological methods that United Kingdom and United States publishers, and their representative bodies, are using to tackle the growing challenge of e-book piracy. Through interviews with industry experts (including consultants, publishers and representatives) and publishing case studies, this paper brings together knowledge previously published and considered separately. The systems considered include The Publishers Association Copyright Infringement Portal, and Digital Rights Management in its various forms. Through these systems, we can reveal a lack of nuanced understanding in the motivations and methods of illegal file sharing, which have led to unsuccessful blanket solutions to a complex problem. By teasing out these problems, this paper will act as a point of reference for current anti-piracy measures, and consider the future options for an industry increasingly using the World Wide Web to distribute content. Microaggregation is a well-known perturbative approach to publish personal or financial records while preserving the privacy of data subjects. Microaggregation is also a mechanism to realize the k-anonymity model for Privacy Preserving Data Publishing (PPDP). Microaggregation consists of two successive phases: partitioning the underlying records into small clusters with at least  k records and aggregating the clustered records by a special kind of cluster statistic as a replacement. Optimal multivariate microaggregation has been shown to be NP-hard. Several heuristic approaches have been proposed in the literature. This paper presents an iterative optimization method based on the optimal solution of the microaggregation problem (IMHM). The method builds the groups based on constrained clustering and linear programming relaxation and fine-tunes the results within an integrated iterative approach. Experimental results on both synthetic and real-world data sets show that IMHM introduces less information loss for a given privacy parameter, and can be adopted for different real world applications. This paper explores the topic of electronic books (e-books) and the effect that these digital devices and other new technologies has on the publishing industry. Contemporary society often claims that the publishing industry is dying and that the innovation of the e-book will eventually sentence the printed book to death. But this study will show that such is not the case. While it is true that the world is undergoing a digital revolution, publishers today have not been left in the dust, because these firms have embraced electronic publishing (e-publishing). The invention of e-books opens a world of opportunities and since the e-book market is still in its growth stage, there is much work left to be done. As with any new venture, the industry faces certain challenges, such as piracy, but with tools like encryption, digital asset management (DAM), digital rights management (DRM), and digital object identifiers (DOI), publishers are well on the way to a solution. While it is safe to say that the digital revolution has forever changed the face of publishing, e-books could actually revitalize the industry. No one knows what the future of e-publishing will hold, but developments affect publishing houses, authors, and consumers alike. This interpretive study of change in Australian book publishing, included a survey of book publishers and the conduct of 14 case studies in five categories of publisher: general trade, academic, professional, specialist and university. This paper reports in detail on the experience on one general trade publisher as it sought to face the challenges of globalization and of organizational and technological change. The major finding was that digitization is indeed, impacting on business models for book publishing, with current models comprising something of a hybrid between the traditional and the innovative. Reflecting the presence in Australia of similar trends and issues that are affecting book publishing around the world, the findings are of relevance both to book publishers and to researchers. The work is original in that relatively little recent academic research has been conducted into book publishing in Australia, particularly as regards the implications of digitization for business models. Although China is an influential developing country undergoing rapid change, a dearth of research on its digital publishing industry exists at the present time. This article reviews 26 years (1994–2020) of research on electronic business published in reputable journals of the field. The basic aim behind this study is to define the growth potential of electronic business and marketing as a theoretical field and provide insights on past, present, and future scientific production in the field. By using bibliometrics and topic modeling techniques, annual scientific production and growth, latent topic structures, and trends by years, information on total citations and networks were examined. While the authors defined the research orientations by uncovering the main topics associated with electronic business, they created an understanding of the possible future research directions of fourteen topics discovered. The results show that, while the transaction-focused publications prevailed in the early years of electronic business and marketing journals, from the mid2000s, the focus has shifted towards marketing-focused publications. Moreover, to understand the main orientations in the field, the authors conducted a citation analysis to define the most influential topics published in the journals. Based upon a recent review of the relevant literature in both English and Chinese, this paper assess the current state of and future prospects for digital publishing in China. It addresses developments both in the context of ongoing technological and organizational change and with regard to the wider social and cultural dimensions. Embodying a simulated SWOT exercise it considers the current and likely future state of digital publishing in China through the eyes of western publishers seeking to do business in that country. Digital publishing in China is still in its infancy, while perhaps remaining more opaque to western observers than was expected. Issues around ownership, industry structure, operating platforms, stakeholders, piracy and intellectual property remain critical. Perhaps more than anything, and certainly much more than in the West, the issue of culture, not only in terms of national values and perspectives but also in terms of how things are done, remains a potent influence on business relationships with foreigners. In the West this continues to feed perceptions of legal and commercial uncertainties, risks to intellectual capital and obstacles to the production and distribution of knowledge and ideas. Whatever the perceived downside to such phenomena however, China is still regarded as a major growth market for western publishers. It concludes that whereas there are many opportunities for both parties, and that both can learn from each other, the learning curve is likely to be much steeper on the western side, owing to the significance of the social and cultural dimension. In this paper we assess the reading preference for marketing journals by deriving a journal utility scale based on click responses to table of contents postings to the ELMAR virtual community. Use of ELMAR data provides a unique window into journal importance, allowing us to look at table of contents reading behavior rather than citing behavior or attitudinal constructs as has been the case in previous studies. At the time of the study, there were more than 5,100 ELMAR subscribers, easily making this the largest journal ranking study ever undertaken. The external validity of our sample is high since ELMAR subscribers include a high percentage of the population of those interested in scholarly research in marketing. Our results are based on actual choice behavior of subscribers as they simply decide what tables of contents to read. The list of journals included in the study contains 165 different titles posted during the study period, which spanned a year. During that period there were multiple issues posted of these 165 journals, resulting in a replicated field study with high reliability. In fact, our journal reading utility measurement yielded a model with an R2 value of .95. Between August 2000 and August 2002, the Electronic Text Center at the University of Virginia distributed over seven million freely-available electronic books to users from more than 100 different countries. Delivered in a variety of formats, including .lit and .pdb, these ebooks have provided proof-of-concept for the adaptive uses of TEI standards beyond the World Wide Web – standards that the Electronic Text Center has employed since its inception in 1992. The first half of this paper discusses the mechanics of ebook production at the Etext Center, the limits of the current technology, and the conversion workflow we hope to implement in the future. The purpose of the study was to explore the status of research data sharing among researchers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and internationally. Relevant data was extracted from the Data Citation Index (DCI) using an advanced search strategy, which was limited to the publication years between 2009 and 2014. Data was analysed to obtain the number of data records by country, institution, subject category, year of publication, and document type as well as the number of citations. A Spearman's correlation analysis was conducted to gauge the relationship between the data records and research articles. Findings indicate that only 20 (out of 50) countries in sub-Saharan Africa produced at least one data record in the DCI, with South Africa leading the pack with 539 (61.39 %) records followed by Kenya, Cameroon and Ghana. SSA contributes a mere 0.03 % of the world's research data as compared to 1.4 % of the world's research articles. Research institutions and universities are the major contributors of research data, which largely focuses on Genetics and Heredity (61.3 %), Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (61.3 %), Agriculture (29.2 %) and Forestry (27.3 %). Citation-wise, the research data has attracted fewer average citations than the articles. In Japan, comic plays a leading role in electronic publishing, whereas e-book sales generated from novels are small. This study investigates format choice, such as pocket-sized paperbacks and e-books for popular novels on bestseller lists in 2010. The results show that almost half of novels are not released as e-books and Japanese authors who already have strong sales performances are not positive about releasing e-books, whereas all foreign novels are released as e-books. Tools for online collaboration are becoming increasingly prevalent in recent years. Certain characteristics of these tools encourage this proliferation: they are easy to use, always available, allow knowledge to be built collaboratively and disseminated quickly through social networks, and are usually free of charge. In this context, blogs are becoming increasingly important in the field of health as digital newspapers and magazines that support a large number of multimedia formats. The possibility to subscribe to blogs and their availability in formats adaptable to mobile devices mean their content can be taken anywhere. Although the use of blogs is well-established among Health Science professionals, their use among university professors as a component of the teaching strategies in these disciplines is much less common, and thus the benefits, risks and limitations of using blogging as a pedagogical tool are poorly understood. In this preliminary evaluation of a pedagogy, a public WordPress-based blog was developed for the Nutrition and Dietetics module of the undergraduate course in Nursing at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). This was primarily intended as way to use ICT to increase the level of student engagement and interest in learning the subject, but also as a way to introduce future health professionals to the world of blogging. This paper describes our experiences with this pedagogical project and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the use of blogs in university Health Sciences teaching. Incorporating this tool into teaching methodologies takes advantages of the theoretical possibilities it offers, which include crucial aspects such as developing critical thinking, acquiring knowledge, answering questions from students, and enabling new mechanisms to develop the skills that must be acquired. However, the challenges and inconveniences are also highlighted; these are principally the lack of motivation and the low participation of the students. By analysing the outcomes of this preliminary evaluation of a pedagogy, it is concluded that blogs are a very useful tool, although it is suggested that the literature shows a certain bias toward the publication of successful trials. This article analyzes the concept of the Digital Publishing System (DPubS) developed by the Cornell University Library. The Internet timeline is short and frenetic. The net has spawned occult acronyms, stupendous commercial failures, and now--for those who commerce in scholarly journals and monographs at the shallow end of the 21st century--many costly choices but few affordable options for the delivery of content. Technical innovations and economic pressures still cast a long shadow over the scholarly publishing community. Readers' and users' appetites have become more sophisticated while the cost structures for managing and delivering book and especially journal content electronically have become far more complex. In 2000, the Cornell University Library submitted a proposal to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for the support of the design and deployment of a mechanism and environment for the on-line distribution of serial literature in mathematics and statistics. Project Euclid was funded in 2000 and launched as a multi-model publishing service in early 2003. As of 2005, Euclid delivers nearly 40 journals to libraries and individuals under subscription, hosting, or open access delivery plans. Project Euclid's technology infrastructure is based on a modular digital library architecture and protocol developed at Cornell in the early 1990s. The model developed by the Library from this early digital library instantiation is now known as DPubS. DPubS was designed specifically to organize, navigate, access, and deliver both open access and subscription controlled scholarly publications.

Value-based imaging requires appropriate utilization and the delivery of consistently high-quality imaging at an acceptable cost. Challenges include developing standardized imaging protocols, ensuring consistent application by technologists, and monitoring quality. These challenges increase as enterprises grow in geographical extent and complexity through mergers or partnerships. Our imaging enterprise includes a university hospital and clinic system, a large county hospital and healthcare system, and a pediatric hospital and health system. Studies across the three systems are interpreted by one large academic radiology group with expertise in various subspecialties. Our goals were as follows: (1) Standardize imaging protocols; (2) adapt the imaging protocols to specific modalities and available equipment; and (3) disseminate this knowledge across all of the sites of care. Our approach involved three components: (1) facilitation of imaging protocol definition across subspecialty radiologist teams; (2) creation of a database which links the clinical imaging protocols to the scanner/machine specific acquisition protocols; and (3) delivery of a protocol library and updates to all users regardless of location. We successfully instituted a process for the development, implementation, and delivery of standardized imaging protocols in a complex, multi-institutional healthcare system. Key elements for success include (1) a Project Champion who is able to articulate the importance of protocol standardization in improving the quality of patient care, (2) strong, effective modality-specific operational committees, (3) a Project Lead to manage the process efficiently, and (4) an electronic publishing of the protocol database to facilitate ease of access and use. The analysis of interviews resulted in four main themes, 12 classes, and 36 subclasses. The main themes were the economy in the publishing industry, technology in the publishing industry, politics in the publishing industry, social issues in the publishing industry. This study examined the state of open access institutional repositories in Nigeria. Expository review of literature was used to x-ray the state of the art, while descriptive informetrics was used to extract informetric data from two major repository directories (Registry of Open Access Repositories and Directory of Open Access Repositories). Findings revealed that Nigeria has twenty repositories from 14 out of about 153 universities in the country; majority of the repositories (70%) use DSpace as archiving software. The growth of repositories in the country has been slow, and the dominant contents of the repositories are journal articles, theses, and dissertations. While the study exposes the weaknesses of Nigeria universities in exploring the potentials of institutional repositories in wider dissemination their scientific productivity, it challenges government and other stakeholders to develop sustainable framework for development of repositories in the country. Advancements in digital technology are making waves in the publishing industry and e-publishing is starting to make its mark in the market. Although publishers view e-publishing as an opportunity to exploit products and new distribution channels, some of them are seeing this development as a risk rather than an opportunity, and thus are not willing to participate in these changes. This study was conducted to determine the readiness of e-publishing among Malaysian book publishers based on the E-Publishing Readiness Assessment Model. The results found that publishers in Malaysia are prepared in terms of infrastructure and human resources. However, only a small percentage of them are willing to practice e-publishing by publishing at least one e-book, while the majority is taking a wait and see approach before they start issuing e-books. Interviews with two companies displaying high levels of e-readiness and low e-readiness, showed a willingness depend on the decision of the company’s top management. In addition, external factors such as market demand, technological pressure, competition, consumer habits and police and government policies also affect the results of the top management to run e-publishing in their respective companies. Through these findings, the government and agencies involved in the publishing industry may be able to help find a solution when designing a strategy for improving e-publishing practices in Malaysia.
