This paper presents a research that investigates solutions and algorithms for determining the optimum machine layout served by autonomous material handling system, like mobile robot or automated guided vehicle. Unlike previous works which solved the layout problem by optimizing the distance between facilities, in this paper the machine layout is addressed based on optimizing the travel time of the material handling system. The proposed approach can include boundary kinematic constraints of vehicle while optimizing the objective function such as velocity, acceleration, orientation, and trajectory curvature. The nonlinear constrained model is transformed to unconstrained problem using penalty method. Then, a simulated annealing-based algorithm is used to search for the optimum locations of machines among all possible feasible layouts. The simulation results showed that the proposed approach was efficient enough to use in real factories due to including a vehicle path planner integrated in an overall layout design scheme that involves searching of vehicle control parameters. Urban traffic congestion becomes a severe problem for many cities all around the world. How to alleviate traffic congestions in real cities is a challenging problem. Benefited from concise and efficient evolution rules, the Biham, Middleton and Levine (BML) model has a great potential to provide favorable results in the dynamic and uncertain traffic flows within an urban network. In this paper, an enhanced BML model (EBML) is proposed to effectively simulate the urban traffic where the timing scheduling optimization algorithm (TSO) based on the quantum particle swarm optimization is creatively introduced to optimize the timing scheduling of traffic light. The main contributions include that: (1) The actual urban road network with different two-way multi-lane roads is firstly mapped into the theoretical lattice space of BML. And the corresponding updating rules of each lattice site are proposed to control vehicle dynamics; (2) compared with BML, a much deeper insight into the phase transition and traffic congestions is provided in EBML. And the interference among different road capacities on forming traffic congestions is elaborated; (3) based on the scheduling simulation of EBML, TSO optimizes the timing scheduling of traffic lights to alleviate traffic congestions. With the development of casting process and its numerical simulation technique, many demands of realism and clearness in post-processing have arisen. This paper introduces the implicit surface to post-processing for the results of casting simulation so as to meet these demands. In this paper, a robust and fully automatic algorithm is proposed for extracting the implicit surface in the signed distance function calculated from the import stereolithography files. Then several applications of implicit surface in the post-processing of casting simulation are listed in two categories. The applications in the first category include fast rendering of massive data, section view in arbitrary direction, visualization of residual liquid, and casting deformation, giving clear and pretty visualization of the results in simulation, and making it possible for engineers and process designers to look through the opaque mold, gain insights to casting process, and locate possible defects. The applications in the second category involve thickness distribution and modulus calculation, which offer important characteristics of castings and facilitate the optimization of casting processes. Simulation optimization studies the problem of optimizing simulation-based objectives. This field has a strong history in engineering but often suffers from several difficulties including being time-consuming and NP-hardness. Simulation optimization is a new and hot topic in the field of system simulation and operational research. This paper presents a hybrid approach that combines Evolutionary Algorithms with neural networks (NNs) for solving simulation optimization problems. In this hybrid approach, we use NNs to replace the known simulation model for evaluating subsequent iterative solutions. Further, we apply the dynamic structure-based neural networks to learn and replace the known simulation model. The determination of dynamic structure-based neural networks is the kernel of this paper. The final experimental results demonstrated that the proposed approach can find optimal or close-to-optimal solutions and is superior to other recent algorithms in simulation optimization. This paper introduces an approach for generating scenarios of sea port container terminals. The scenarios can be used as input data for simulation models. Furthermore, they can be employed as test data for algorithms to solve optimization problems in container terminal logistics such as berth planning and crane scheduling. A scenario consists of arrivals of deep sea vessels, feeder ships, trains, and trucks together with lists of containers to be loaded and unloaded. Moreover, container attributes such as size, empty, reefer, weight. and destination are included. The generator is based on a large number of parameters that allow the user to produce realistic scenarios of any size. The purpose of this paper is to outline the parameters that are important to produce realistic scenarios of high practical relevance and to propose an algorithm that computes scenarios on the basis of these parameters. The generator discussed here has been developed within the simulation project at the HHLA Container-Terminal Altenwerder in Hamburg, Germany. In this paper, the berth allocation problem with stochastic vessel handling times is formulated as a bi-objective problem. To solve the resulting problem, an evolutionary algorithm-based heuristic and a simulation-based Pareto front pruning algorithm is proposed. Due to the continuous growth in the application of networks in manufacturing, quality of service (QoS) has become an important issue. In this paper, the concept of QoS for manufacturing networks is discussed. To provide overall performance assurance for manufacturing networks, a service framework integrating the QoS mechanisms of the networked resource service management function and the communication networks is proposed. The novel framework maps an application to resource services and then to communication networks, adopts an intelligent optimisation algorithm for QoS management of resource services, and provides QoS schemes for data transfer across communication networks. A prototype implementation has been realised and a set of simulation experiments conducted to evaluate the validity of the framework. The results obtained demonstrate the ability of the framework to satisfy the various performance requirements posed by such applications and provide efficient overall performance assurance for manufacturing networks. Neural tree model has been successfully applied to solving a variety of interesting problems. In most previous studies, optimization of the neural tree model was divided into two steps: first structure optimization, then parameter optimization. One major problem in the evolution of structure without parameter information was noisy fitness evaluation. In this paper, an improved breeder genetic programming algorithm is proposed to the synthesis of neural tree model. The effectiveness and performance of the method are evaluated on time series prediction problems and compared with those of related methods. This paper presents an optimized path generation algorithm for direction parallel milling, which is commonly used in the roughing and finishing stages. First, a geometrically efficient tool path generation algorithm using an intersection points graph is introduced. Second, the generated tool path is modified as an optimized tool path that maintains a constant material removal rate to achieve a constant cutting force and avoid chatter vibration, and the results are verified. Additional tool path segments are appended to the basic tool path through a pixel-based simulation technique. The algorithm is implemented for two-dimensional contiguous end milling operations with flat end mills, and cutting tests are conducted by measuring the spindle current, which reflects the changing machining situations, to verify the performance of the proposed method. The conventional self-organizing feature map (SOM) algorithm is usually interpreted as a computational model, which can capture main features of computational maps in the brain. In this paper, we present a variant of the SOM algorithm called the SOM-based optimization (SOMO) algorithm. The development of the SOMO algorithm was motivated by exploring the possibility of applying the SOM algorithm in continuous optimization problems. Through the self-organizing process, good solutions to an optimization problem can be simultaneously explored and exploited by the SOMO algorithm. In our opinion, the SOMO algorithm not only can be regarded as a biologically inspired computational model but also may be regarded as a new approach to a model of social influence and social learning. The sample-path method is one of the most important tools in simulation-based optimization. The basic idea of the method is to approximate the expected simulation output by the average of sample observations with a common random number sequence. In this paper, we describe a new variant of Powell’s unconstrained optimization by quadratic approximation (UOBYQA) method, which integrates a Bayesian variable-number sample-path (VNSP) scheme to choose appropriate number of samples at each iteration. The statistically accurate scheme determines the number of simulation runs, and guarantees the global convergence of the algorithm. The VNSP scheme saves a significant amount of simulation operations compared to general purpose ‘fixed-number’ sample-path methods. We present numerical results based on the new algorithm. A game theoretic solution for distributed uplink resource allocation in multi-cell OFDMA systems is presented in this paper. Convergence rule and steady state characterization are analyzed with potential game. Simulation results show that the proposed non-cooperative potential game algorithm for dynamic subcarrier and power allocation can converge to Nash Equilibrium (NE) quickly and achieve higher energy efficiency compared with pure iterative water-filling algorithm. This paper provides new insights into the solution of optimal stochastic control problems by means of a system of partial differential equations, which characterize directly the optimal control. This new system is obtained by the application of the stochastic maximum principle at every initial condition, assuming that the optimal controls are smooth enough. In this paper, we investigate the strong convergence of an inexact proximalpoint algorithm. It is known that the proximal-point algorithm converges weakly to a solution of a maximal monotone operator, but fails to converge strongly. Solodov and Svaiter (Math. Program. 87:189–202, 2000) introduced a new proximal-type algorithm to generate a strongly convergent sequence and established a convergence result in Hilbert space. Subsequently, Kamimura and Takahashi (SIAM J. Optim. 13:938–945, 2003) extended the Solodov and Svaiter result to the setting of uniformly convex and uniformly smooth Banach space. On the other hand, Rockafellar (SIAM J. Control Optim. 14:877–898, 1976) gave an inexact proximal-point algorithm which is more practical than the exact one. Our purpose is to extend the Kamimura and Takahashi result to a new inexact proximal-type algorithm. It is well known that considering a non-Euclidean Minkowski metric in Multidimensional Scaling, either for the distance model or for the loss function, increases the computational problem of local minima considerably. In this paper, we propose an algorithm in which both the loss function and the composition rule can be considered in any Minkowski metric, using a multivariate randomly alternating Simulated Annealing procedure with permutation and translation phases. The algorithm has been implemented in Fortran and tested over classical and simulated data matrices with sizes up to 200 objects. A study has been carried out with some of the common loss functions to determine the most suitable values for the main parameters. The experimental results confirm the theoretical expectation that Simulated Annealing is a suitable strategy to deal by itself with the optimization problems in Multidimensional Scaling, in particular for City-Block, Euclidean and Infinity metrics. One of the main ingredients of interior-point methods is the generation of iterates in a neighborhood of the central path. Measuring how close the iterates are to the central path is an important aspect of such methods and it is accomplished by using proximity measure functions. In this paper, we propose a unified presentation of the proximity measures and a study of their relationships and computational role when using a generic primal-dual interior-point method for computing the analytic center for a standard linear optimization problem. We demonstrate that the choice of the proximity measure can affect greatly the performance of the method. It is shown that we may be able to choose the algorithmic parameters and the central-path neighborhood radius (size) in such a way to obtain comparable results for several measures. In this paper, we use the Ehlich-Zeller-G9ärtel inequality to derive an algorithm for finding the global minima of polynomials over hyperrectangles as well as to provide a bounding method for the branch-and-bound algorithm. The latter application of the inequality results in an improved algorithm which gives simultaneously a decreasing upper bound and an increasing lower bound for the global minimum at each iteration. This paper develops a theory for the global solution of nonconvex optimization problems with parameter-embedded linear dynamic systems. A quite general problem formulation is introduced and a solution is shown to exists. A convexity theory for integrals is then developed to construct convex relaxations for utilization in a branch-and-bound framework to calculate a global minimum. Interval analysis is employed to generate bounds on the state variables implied by the bounds on the embedded parameters. These bounds, along with basic integration theory, are used to prove convergence of the branch-and-bound algorithm to the global minimum of the optimization problem. The main point of this paper is to provide a simple and efficient threshold value for the threshold accepting (TA) algorithm to attempt an optimal solution for the regular grid travelling salesman problems (TSPs) in a reliable way. This new algorithm is named the single value threshold accepting algorithm (SVTA). The number of the threshold value is one and its value is: [(2-√2)g*10,0001/10,000 where g is the grid size and [x] is the smallest integer not less than a real number x. For the regular-grid TSPs, g can be set as 1/√n where n is the problem size. It is shown empirically, with 100 independent simulations performed with 441 cities, in 16 different cases, that the SVTA is far superior to (at least five times faster on average than) the previous double threshold accepting (DTA) with respect to the speed of finding a global optimal reliably. Particularly in the case of the 441 cities, the proposed algorithm is at least 21 times faster and rises up to 96 times on average and optimistically 284 times faster than the previous one.
