The blood-brain barrier (BBB) protects the brain by actively allowing the entry of ions and nutrients while limiting the passage of from toxins and pathogens. A healthy BBB has low permeability and high selectivity to maintain normal brain functions. Increased BBB permeability can result from neurological diseases and traumatic injuries. Modern engineering technologies such as microfluidics and fabrication techniques have advanced the development of BBB models to simulate the basic functions of BBB. However, the intrinsic BBB properties are difficult to replicate. Existing in vitro BBB models demonstrate inconsistent BBB permeability and selectivity due to variations in microfluidic design, cell types and arrangement, expression of tight junction (TJ) proteins, and use of shear stress. Specifically, microfluidic designs have flow channels of different sizes, complexity, topology, and modular structure. Different cell types are selected to mimic various physiological conditions. These factors make it challenging to compare results obtained using different experimental setups. This paper highlights key factors that play important roles in influencing microfluidic models and discusses how these factors contribute to permeability and selectivity of the BBB models. The article reports on the study concerning the significance of ribonucleic acid (RNA) fragments on skin. It cites that cultured cells and animals studies have been used to examine the details of how cells migrate through the epidermis. Virologist Paul Bieniasz at the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center and Laboratory of Retrovirology at the Rockefeller University in New York investigated cell-surface proteins that might keep to HIV-1 in the absence of viral protein U (VPU). It is said that there is much to learn about tetherin for there are hints that it has broad antiviral activity. Moreover, there is a need for investigations whether genetic variation in tetherin might affect susceptibility to HIV infection.

Many people find the manipulation of the human germline—editing the DNA of sperm or egg cells such that these genetic changes are passed to the resulting offspring—to be morally impermissible. In this paper, I argue for the claim that editing the human germline is morally permissible. My argument starts with the claim that outcome uncertainty regarding the effects of germline editing shows that the duty to not harm cannot ground the prohibition of germline editing. Instead, if germline editing is wrong, it is wrong because it violates a duty to protect. However, we also have an epistemic duty to gather evidence regarding the effects of editing the human germline which overrides any moral duty to protect future generations. Removal of inorganic nitrogen sources by cells of the aerial microalga Trentepohlia aurea grown on the surface of substrate, such as filter paper, has been investigated in a batch system. When the alga grew on the paper dampened with medium, it actively ingested inorganic nitrogenous compounds in the medium. Immobilized cells on the filter papers were called ‘algal biofilm’ in this study. When the algal biofilms were soaked in modified Bold's Basal medium (using 1 g NH4Cl l-1 as a N source), the removal rate was 4.25 mg ammonium-N l-1 day-1 in 40 days. In modified medium with added 26 mg nitrite-N, the removal rate of the total inorganic N ion by the biofilms reached 5.11 mg N l-1 day-1. This removal rate of total N ion was higher than that in the medium by addition of 26 mg nitrate-N. In addition, we tried to examine simultaneous removal of ammonium, nitrate, and nitrite ions and growth inhibition of cyanobacteria in the medium by using the algal biofilms. Low power cache memory in a system on chip is in high demand today. With the lowering of MOSFET's channel length, low-power SRAM design has become a more challenging task. This paper presents differential 8T SRAM cell with minimum power utilization. The proposed cell has one pair of transmission gate as access switches. Due to use of TG instead of pass gate access transistor its write access time (TWA) is short. The low power consumption of the cell is due to stacking effect. This paper compares design metrics of the proposed cell with conventional 6T (CON6T) and ZIGZAG 8T (ZG8T) SRAM cells. The proposed 8T SRAM cell shows 1.15×/1.17× improvement in TWA as compared to CON6T/ZG8T at a penalty of 2.65×/2× in read access time (TRA). The proposed cell consumes 3.22× less hold power compared to both CON6T and ZG8T SRAM cells. And the proposed cell consumes 4.41× (4.44×) less write power as compared to CON6T (ZG8T) SRAM cell. Our proposed cell takes 1.37× lower chip area as compared to ZG8T cell at the expense of 1.49× higher area as compared to CON6T SRAM cell. The proposed cell also achieves 1.5×/3× higher stability during write operation as compared to CON6T/ZG8T SRAM cell, respectively. The quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) were highly regarded due to its high operating frequency and significantly low power consumption. One of the most useful circuits in processors architecture is counter. This paper presents effective designs and arrangement of QCA based counter-circuits. In this study new counter circuits in QCA technology are designed and precise simulation are done using the QCADesigner. Three, four and five bits counters are proposed in this paper in QCA technology. A comparison is made between the past and recent designs to illustrate which method is better and more efficient in terms of area, complexity, number of cells, and delay. This paper presents a review of the space exploration for life signature search with a special focus on the fluorescence microscope we developed for the life signature search on Mars and in other sites. Considering where, what, and how to search for life signature is essential. Life signature search exploration can be performed on the Mars surface and underground, on Venus' cloud, moon, asteroids, icy bodies (e.g., moons of Jupiter and Saturn), and so on. It is a useful strategy to consider the targeted characteristics that may be similar to those of terrestrial microorganisms, which are microorganisms with uniform spherical or rod structures with approximately 1 μm diameter surrounded by a membrane having a metabolic activity and mainly made of carbon-based molecules. These characteristics can be analyzed by using a fluorescence microscope and a combination of fluorescence pigments with specific staining characteristics to distinguish the microorganism characteristics. Section 1 introduces the space exploration for life signature search. Section 2 reviews the scientific instruments and achievements of past and ongoing Mars exploration missions closely related to astrobiology. Section 3 presents the search targets and analysis of astrobiology. Section 4 discusses the extraterrestrial life exploration methods that use a microscope together with other methods (based on mass spectrometry, morphology, detection of growth, movement, and death, etc. for microscopic and macroscopic organism). Section 5 expounds on the life signature detection fluorescence microscope, for which we have manufactured a bread board model and tested for extraterrestrial life exploration. The gene celB encoding an endoglucanase from Paenibacillus sp. BP-23 was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The nucleotide sequence of a 4161 bp DNA fragment containing the celB gene was determined, revealing an open reading frame of 2991 nucleotides that encodes a protein of 106,927 Da. Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequence of endoglucanase B with known β-glycanase sequences showed that the encoded enzyme is a modular protein and exhibits high homology to enzymes belonging to family 9 cellulases. The celB gene product synthesized in E. coli showed high activity on carboxymethyl cellulose and lichenan while low activity was found on Avicel. Activity was enhanced in the presence of 10 mM Ca2+ and showed its maximum at 53 °C and pH 5.5. The effect of the cloned enzyme in modifying the physical properties of pulp and paper from Eucalyptus was tested (CelB treatment). An increase in mechanical strength of paper and a decrease in pulp dewatering properties were found, indicating that CelB treatment can be considered as a biorefining. Treatment with CelB gave rise to an improvement in paper strength similar to that obtained with 1,000 revolutions increase in mechanical refining. Comparison with the performances of recently developed endoglucanase A from the same strain and with a commercial cellulase showed that CelB produced the highest refining effect. This paper presents the design, fabrication and experimental characterization of an electro-thermally actuated microgripper suitable for single-cell manipulation. The analysis of the mechanical properties of cells is of great interest both in medicine and biology because the study of the cellular mechanical behaviour and resistance is necessary in these fields. Microgrippers (Bio-MEMS) have an important role in the manipulation of biological tissues and cells. In recent works, the research group simulated the mechanical behavior of grippers and the different actuation strategies. Considering the dimensional specifications and targets imposed by actuation and biocompatibility, in this paper, a microgripper based on electro-thermal actuation is studied. Starting from previous numerical results, a novel SU8 structure is designed and realized according to the micro-fabrication constraints and then the structure is simulated using the finite element method (FEM)-based thermo-structural simulations in ANSYS. Therefore, the fabrication method and steps are presented and the gripper has been developed and tested. Finally, the tip displacements of the gripper, electro-thermally actuated in different operating conditions, are compared with those obtained by means of numerical FEM simulations. In this paper, we present a transparent mechanical stimulation device capable of uniaxial stimulation, which is compatible with standard bioanalytical methods used in cellular mechanobiology. We validate the functionality of the uniaxial stimulation system using human-induced pluripotent stem cells-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs). The pneumatically controlled device is fabricated from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and provides uniaxial strain and superior optical performance compatible with standard inverted microscopy techniques used for bioanalytics (e.g., fluorescence microscopy and calcium imaging). Therefore, it allows for a continuous investigation of the cell state during stretching experiments. The paper introduces design and fabrication of the device, characterizes the mechanical performance of the device and demonstrates the compatibility with standard bioanalytical analysis tools. Imaging modalities, such as high-resolution live cell phase contrast imaging and video recordings, fluorescent imaging and calcium imaging are possible to perform in the device. Utilizing the different imaging modalities and proposed stretching device, we demonstrate the capability of the device for extensive further studies of hiPSC-CMs. We also demonstrate that sarcomere structures of hiPSC-CMs organize and orient perpendicular to uniaxial strain axis and thus express more maturated nature of cardiomyocytes. In this paper, we proposed a nanoelectromechanical design as memory cells. A simple design contains a double-walled nanotube-based oscillator. Atomistic materials are deposed on the outer nanotube as electrodes. Once the WRITE voltages are applied on electrodes, the induced electromagnetic force can overcome the interlayer friction between the inner and outer tubes so that the oscillator can provide stable oscillations. The READ voltages are employed to indicate logic 0/1 states based on the position of the inner tube. A new continuum modeling is developed in this paper to analyze large models of the proposed nanoelectromechanical design. This paper presents a new strategy addressed as 'service level-based smooth production strategy' for the cell formation decisions of a robust cellular manufacturing system (CMS) to handle varying demands. In this strategy, a service level concept is adapted to fix smooth production level estimated to meet the desired demand satisfaction rate (DSR) or fill rate of the customers. Besides, the model considers cross-flow and scheduling aspects, which are not often addressed in CMS designs. A non-linear integer program is formulated to evolve CMS decisions for the specified DSR under fluctuating demands. Two solution methodologies of mathematical programming using ILOG CPLEX solver and genetic algorithm (GA) with adaptive mutation and crossover operators addressed in as adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) are proposed. The model analysis carried out under various DSR reveals that the cell formation decisions are highly sensitive to DSR. This paper also discusses how this model can be used to compare robust and reconfigurable approaches to decide the suitable approach to handle fluctuating demands with minimum cost. The performance study of solution methodologies reveals that CPLEX and AGA are efficient in finding optimal solutions to smaller-size problems. This paper proposes an extension of the finite cell method (FCM) to V-rep models, a novel geometric framework for volumetric representations. This combination of an embedded domain approach (FCM) and a new modeling framework (V-rep) forms the basis for an efficient and accurate simulation of mechanical artifacts, which are not only characterized by complex shapes but also by their non-standard interior structure. These types of objects gain more and more interest in the context of the new design opportunities opened by additive manufacturing, in particular when graded or micro-structured material is applied. Two different types of functionally graded materials (FGM) are considered: The first one, multi-material FGM is described using the inherent property of V-rep models to assign different properties throughout the interior of a domain. The second, single-material FGM—which is heterogeneously micro-structured—characterizes the effective material behavior of representative volume elements by homogenization and performs large-scale simulations using the embedded domain approach. In an attempt to address the huge data demand of indoor mobile users and poor signal strength from outdoor base stations to indoor environments, opertaors have started deploying variety of small cells likes Femtos, picos and micro cells. In this work, we used Femtos as small cells. Femto cells are low-cost, low-power consuming cellular base stations which operate only in licensed spectrum and are designed for both outdoor and indoor communication. Although small cells can be used for enhancing network capacity and coverage, arbitrary deployment of large number of small cells can lead to increase in operators expenditure and may create severe interference issues for cell edge users. In this paper, we look into optimal placement of small cell solutions to improve data rates of users in LTE HetNets using Femtos. Besides, these solutions address the main concerns of interference and resource management by proposing mechanisms for optimal placement of Femtos (OptFP, MinNF), dynamic power control and bandwidth allocation in Femtos (SOPC) and dynamic offloading. This paper presents a low leakage power 10T single-ended SRAM cell in the sub-threshold region that improves read, write, and hold stability. While at low voltages, the write-ability is increased by temporarily floating the data node, the read stability of the cell is maintained approximately as equal as the hold state by separating the data-storage node from the read bit line by using only a single transistor. According to Simulations using HSPICE software in 10 nm FinFET technology, the read stability of the proposed cell is approximately 4.8× higher than the conventional 6T at 200 mV. Furthermore, the proposed cell is found to have the lowest static power dissipation, as it tends to be 4% lower than the standard six-transistor cell at this voltage. Cellular manufacturing design is apprehensive about the conception and activity of cells to take the benefits of adaptability, effective flow, and high creation rate. The way toward forming manufacturing cells with the greatest efficiency is the most critical strides in cellular manufacturing. In this paper, a new monarch butterfly optimization (MBO) and firefly (FF)-based meta-heuristic is proposed to solve a multi-objective cell formation problem (CFP). This hybridized MBO–FF acquires optimal arrangements in a worthy measure of time, particularly for big size problems also focused to enhance the working of CFP. This algorithm is competent to investigate the search space viably and recognize the global optimal within a short measure of time. Here, percentage of exceptional elements, machine utilization, grouping efficacy and cell efficiency are measured for the performance enhancement. Excellent flexural strength and ductility characteristics make bamboo an ideal natural material for many structural applications. This paper focuses on revealing the flexural ductility of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis (Carr.) J. Houz.) at the cellular level. Scanning electron and three-dimensional X-ray microscopes were applied to examine the morphological changes and interaction of bamboo cells during the bending experiment. The flexural ductility of bamboo was investigated based on spatial arrangement and morphological structure of cells. During bending, bamboo cells were compressed in the longitudinal direction and elongated in the radial direction in the compressive layer. However, bamboo cells in the tensile layer were elongated in the longitudinal direction and shortened in the radial direction. Parenchyma cells had relatively larger deformation than other cells. The largest relative deformations of parenchyma cells reached − 4.49% (longitudinal direction) and 3.08% (radial direction) in the compressive layer and 2.33% (longitudinal direction) and − 0.47% (radial direction) in the tensile layer. Both parenchyma cells and vessels can function as a buffer against applied load and enhance the flexural ductility of bamboo. Fiber could restrict the deformation of its adjacent cells and provide strength for bamboo. Results revealed the mechanism of deforming of natural bamboo from the micro perspective and provided knowledge for bionic design on the basis of the morphological structure of bamboo. Physically Obfuscated Keys (POK) are used to embed in chips secret bit-strings to be used in cryptographic protocols. Usually a POK is built as an array of elementary 1-bit POKs (cells). In order to guarantee that the same secret bit-string is generated at every turn-on, stabilizer circuits are required, which are typically based on possibly expensive error-correction circuitry. In this paper we propose a stabilizer scheme that is not based on error-correction codes, but rather forces to zero the cells that are too unreliable and compensate for the disabled cells by means of a mixing stage. Computational models of tumors have the potential to connect observations made on the cellular and the tissue scales. With cellular scale models, each cell can be treated as a discrete entity, while tissue scale models typically represent tumors as a continuum. Though the discrete approach often enables a more mechanistic and biologically driven description of cellular behavior, it is often computationally intractable on the tissue scale. Here, we adapt peridynamics, a theoretical and computational approach designed to unify the mechanics of discrete and continuous media, for the growth of biological materials. The result is a computational model for tumor growth that can represent either individual cells or the tissue as a whole. We take advantage of the flexibility provided by the peridynamic framework to implement a cell division mechanism, motivated by the fact that cell division is the mechanism driving tumor growth. Clustering plays an important role in constructing practical network systems. In this paper, we propose a novel clustering algorithm with low complexity for dense small cell networks, which is a promising deployment in next-generation wireless networking. Our algorithm is a matrix-based algorithm where metrics for the clustering process are represented as a matrix on which the clustering problem is represented as the maximization of elements. The proposed algorithm simplifies the exhaustive search for all possible clustering formations to the sequential selection of small cells, which significantly reduces the clustering process complexity. We evaluate the complexity and the achievable rate with the proposed algorithm and show that our algorithm achieves almost optimal performance, i.e., almost the same performance achieved by exhaustive search, while substantially reducing the clustering process complexity. From the first observation about 40 years ago that yeast cells were interesting protective structures that could be used in several industrial applications, processes have been developed enabling technologists to incorporate several compounds possessing different physico-chemical (hydrophobic/hydrophilic) properties. Technologists screened yeast diversity to choose strains possessing the best potential and modified their physiological state to increase the uptake capability and the envelope plasticity, for instance by increasing the amount of lipids. Physico-chemical treatments were also used to improve the uptake and decrease the yeast natural material impact on the final products. For example, yeast cells could be 'emptied' of their plasmic material. Yeast cells can also be coated with an additional polymeric material to increase resistance to heat treatment or decrease material liberation. These capsules can be used for several applications including carbonless paper, perfuming tissues and drug targeting, but the main industrial application deals currently with flavour encapsulation, although encapsulation in yeast is also interesting for the global food industry trend for health products. This paper proposes a new approach to integrating the cell formation, group layout of rectangle-shaped machines and routing selection problems. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer program with the objective of minimizing the handling costs. Due to the computational complexity of the problem, a hybrid simulated annealing (SA) is employed to solve the problem. The sequence-pair representation, originally proposed for block placement, is utilized for solution encoding. Two placement algorithms are developed to evaluate the objective function value of an encoded solution in the SA. The first placement algorithm is based on solving a linear program embedded with a constraint reduction algorithm. The second one is a fast heuristic that can evaluate an encoded solution in much less computational time. Benchmarks selected from the literature are solved to verify the performance of the SA and to accomplish comparisons. The computational results demonstrated the high performance of both designed hybrid SA algorithms. The comparison against the literature also indicated that the flexibility incorporated into the model results in better layouts, even if the model is solved only by a solver such as CPLEX. In cell-based research, the process of visually monitoring cells generates large image datasets that need to be evaluated for quantifiable information in order to track the effectiveness of treatments in vitro. With the traditional, end-point assay-based approach being error-prone, and existing computational approaches being complex, we tested existing machine learning frameworks to find methods that are relatively simple, yet powerful enough to accomplish the goal of analyzing cell microscopy data. This paper details the machine learning pipeline for pixel-based classification and object-based classification. Furthermore, it compares the performances of three classifiers. The classifiers evaluated were the fast-random forest (RF), the sequential minimal optimization (SMO), and the Bayesian network (BN). Images were first preprocessed using smoothing and contrast methods found in FIJI. For pixel-based classification, the preprocessed images were fed into the Trainable Waikato Segmentation (TWS). For object-based classification, training and classification were conducted within the Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis (WEKA) interface. All classifiers' performance was evaluated using the WEKA experimental explorer. In terms of performance, the BN had the lowest classification accuracy for both the pixel-based and object-based model. The object-based SMO classifier had the best performance with the lowest mean absolute error of 0.05. The TWS and WEKA interface allows users to easily create and train classifiers for image analysis. However, for analyzing large image datasets, they are not ideal. Grapical abstract. We present a circuit-level technique of designing a lower write-power along with variability-resistant 9-MOFTET static random-access memory cell. Our proposed bitcell exhibits lower write-power consumption owing to reduction of activity factor and breakup of feedback path between the cross-coupled inverters during write operation. It exhibits higher read static noise margin (by 3.09 ×) compared with standard 6T SRAM cell @ minimum-area. LP9T shows higher static margin for write operation (by 41%) compared with 8T (S6T) @ iso-area (minimum-area). These improvements are achieved due to breakup of feedback path during the process of writing a bit on to the storage node. The paper investigates in detail the influence of variation in process related parameters, environmental parameters such as supply voltage and temperature on most of the important design parameters of the bitcell and compares the obtained simulation results with conventional 6-MOSFET (6T) and 8-MOSFET (8T) bitcells. It demonstrates its invariableness by showing 1.5 × tighter disperse in read time variability with a cost of 1.41 × higher read time compared with S6T @ minimum-area. It also exhibits 39% narrower disperse in read time variability in comparison to 8T @ iso-area. It draws lower power (2.06 ×) from supply voltage while flipping of stored data during write mode compared with standard 8T SRAM cell @ iso-area. It also compares key design metrics of LP9T with those of few other 9T SRAM cells found in the literature. This work also realizes the proposed design using CNFET. This paper deals with cell identifier (ID) estimation for narrowband-Internet of things (NB-IoT) system. It is suggested to transform the usual maximum likelihood (ML) estimator expression in order to highlight a discrete Fourier transform (DFT), which can be computed with fast algorithms. Therefore, the proposed method is a DFT-based low-complexity cell ID estimator that can be qualified as optimal in the ML sense. The principle is extended to the practical case where the channel is unknown and must be estimated. In this scenario, the concentrated likelihood function needs to be maximized, in which the ML channel estimate is a function of the unknown cell ID parameter. This operation only involves a few additional multiplications. Simulation results reveal that the performance of the proposed method actually matches the optimal one of the ML cell ID estimator. Furthermore, the technique is robust to residual frequency offset up to several hundreds of Hertz. We also show that the mean square error of channel estimation reaches its Cramér-Rao bound (CRB). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects that photobiomodulation therapy might produce in cells, in particular, related to their structure. Thus, this paper presents the results of morphological changes in fibroblasts following low-intensity light illumination. Mouse fibroblasts were grown on glass coverslips on either 4 kPa or 16 kPa gels, to mimic normal tissue conditions. Cells were photo-irradiated with laser light at either 625 nm or 808 nm (total energies ranging from 34 to 47 J). Cells were fixed at 5 min, 1 h, or 24 h after photo-irradiation, stained for both actin filaments and the cell nucleus, and imaged by confocal microscopy. A non-light exposed group was also imaged. A detailed analysis of the images demonstrated that the total polymerized actin and number of actin filaments decrease, while the nucleus area increases in treated cells shortly after photo-irradiation, regardless of substrate and wavelength. This experiment indicated that photobiomodulation therapy could change the morphological properties of cells and affect their cytoskeleton. Because the data generated in the complex industrial manufacturing processes is multi-sourced and heterogeneous, it brings a challenge for addressing decision-making optimization problems embedded in the whole manufacturing processes. Especially, for inconsistent lithium-ion cell screening as such a special problem, it is a tough issue to fuse data from multiple sources in a lithium-ion cell manufacturing process to screen cells for relieving the inconsistency among cells in a battery pack with multiple cells configured in series, parallel, and series-parallel. This paper proposes a data-driven decision-making optimization approach (DDDMO) for inconsistent lithium-ion cell screening, which takes into account three dynamic characteristic curves of cells, thus ensuring that the screened cells have consistent electrochemical characteristics. The DDDMO method uses the convolutional auto-encoder to extract features from different characteristics curves of lithium-ion cells through multi-channels and then the features in different channels are combined into fusion features to build a feature base. It also proposes an effective sample generation approach for imbalanced learning using the conditional generative adversarial networks to enhance the feature base, thereby efficiently training a classifier for inconsistent lithium-ion cell screening. Finally, industrial applications verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The results show that the missing rate of inconsistent lithium-ion cells drops by an average of 93.74% compared to the screening performance in the single dynamic characteristic of cells, and the DDDMO approach has greater accuracy for screening cells at lower time costs than the existing methods. In automated screening of cervical cytology, the morphological features of cell play a determining role. To avoid false diagnosis, urgent need of precise extraction of these features led to emergence of new segmentation models. In this paper author aspire to present literature review of research done in the field of segmentation stage in automatic screening of cervical smear images. Total of 78 publications are considered for the time period of 40 years. A detailed study of segmentation technique proposed in each publication is considered, which presents a chronological development and up-gradation of segmentation models. This review assist researcher to have thorough knowledge of various state-of-art segmentation models and the problems and complexities required to be tackled, for unambiguous determination of malignancies in cervical cytology.
