Henan Province is the birthplace of Chinese civilization and one of the earliest human settlements, which means that the area has an important national cultural heritage. Traditional villages are an important facet of this cultural heritage, and studying their spatiotemporal characteristics in different periods has important theoretical and practical significance for the sustainable development and protection of cultural heritage in the region. This paper takes the traditional villages of the Yellow River basin in Henan Province that were formed before 1919 as the research object. Information on the ancient river was obtained through a literature search as well as via field research, and the important tributaries of the Yellow River in different periods were mapped using ArcGIS 10.0 software. The nearest neighbor index, kernel density estimation, standard deviation ellipse and other methods were adopted to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of the traditional villages. The factors that influenced the evolution of traditional villages were explored in depth by combining changes in the course of the river and water conservancy projects. The results show that the formation of traditional villages along the Yellow River in Henan Province has experienced a historical track of growth, contraction, growth and prosperity and stability. The traditional villages along the Yellow River in Henan Province generally show a clustered pattern, forming a dense concentration of traditional villages in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. The center of gravity shows a migration trend from southeast to northwest. In terms of influencing factors, the spatiotemporal evolution of the relationship between villages and their distance to water is closely related to climatic fluctuations, changes in channel, water conservancy projects and social and cultural factors. This paper deepens our understanding of the relationship between traditional village evolution and watersheds by improving the consistency between village spatial distribution and historical geography and provides a useful theoretical reference for the sustainable development of China's traditional villages. Environmental resources play an extremely important role in economic development. In the context of China's economic development entering a new normal, attaching importance to environmental protection and strengthening environmental regulations will have an important impact on the original foreign direct investment (FDI) and China's economic development. Therefore, this paper combines the characteristics of the "new normal" of China's economic development, takes 30 provinces in China from 2008 to 2017 as the research object, and uses the PVAR model and impulse response function to re-verify the interaction mechanism and path among environmental regulation, FDI and high-quality economic development. The study found that: (1) There is an obvious mutual promotion relationship between environmental regulations and the quality of China's economic development and economic development environment. Strengthening environmental regulation is conducive to the realization of China's economic "new normal" development goal. (2) Although the strengthening of environmental regulation will have a significant constraint effect on FDI and China's economic growth rate, but the effect is relatively small. (3) FDI and economic growth rate variables are mutually motivated and promote each other, but both of them have a significant inhibitory effect on regional environmental regulation. In general, under the background of the "new normal" of China's economic development, appropriately increasing the intensity of environmental regulation is not only conducive to environmental protection and promoting high-quality and sustainable economic development, but also can serve the purpose of guiding the structure of foreign investment and transforming the mode of economic growth. Support vector machine (SVM) is a widely used algorithm in the field of machine learning, and it is a research hotspot in the field of data mining. In order to fully understand the historical progress and current situation of SVM researches, as well as its future development trend in China, this paper conducts a comprehensive bibliometric study based on the publications from web of science database by Chinese scholars in this field. First, this paper focuses on some of the basic characteristics of the research publications of SVM in China, including important journals, research institutions and countries/regions, most cited publications, and so on. Then, based on the knowledge mapping software VOSviewer, the cooperation between other countries and China as well as the cooperation between research institutions in China are explored. Finally, VOSviewer based bibliometric visualization graphics are used to identify the changes of the research hotspots in the SVM field. Academic conferences are key places for knowledge communication, innovation and production. Since the papers from large geography conferences are an important manifestation of the trending topics and frontiers of geographical research, we break through the limitations of traditional conference reviews through implementation of a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of conference papers. This is of great significance for understanding the subject characteristics and communication modes of academic geography. This article argues that: the American Association of Geographers' Annual Meeting (hereinafter referred to as AAG) and China Conference on Geography (CCG) have both similarities and differences in their characteristics, especially in their focus on specific geographical problems; under the influence of the conference history, academic authority, and institutional culture, AAG and CCG respectively highlight "globality" and "locality" characteristics, and there are partial common concerns and multiple interweavings on global and local research topics. Compared with AAG's diversified technical applications and sub-discipline development, CCG has neglected humanistic thinking in the empirical bias. With the continuous intersection and integration of different disciplines or areas, the geography of each country in the future should jointly enhance the inclusiveness and openness of academic conferences to promote academic freedom and develop solutions to geographic issues. This paper explores the impacts of basic research and applied research on the universities' innovation capabilities and examines the role of private research funding. First, this paper divides universities' innovation capabilities into scientific innovation capabilities and technological innovation capabilities according to the Pasteur's quadrant paradigm. Second, based on a survey of 61 universities directly under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education of China, this study conducts an empirical analysis using the partial least squares path model. The results indicate that the complementary or substitutable effect of basic research and applied research on the promotion of universities' innovation capabilities is different in the two dimension. Furthermore, the private research funding negatively moderates the effect of applied research on universities' innovation capabilities, as well as the two dimensions. Very few studies exist in rationalizing comprehensively the relationship between market integration and green economic growth in China. This paper tries to answer the question whether and how market integration influences regional green economic growth in China. Based on the panel data of 285 city-level regions from year 2004 to 2018 in China, this paper develops explanatory mechanism and discusses the influence theoretically and empirically. To advance the analysis, we construct market integration indicator through relative price variance method based on commodity retail price index and employ the Malmquist–Luenberger (ML) productivity index and DEA-SBM (data envelopment analysis–slacks-based measure) model to evaluate green total factor productivity (GTFP) as indicator for green economic growth. Our empirical findings are: (1) Apparent regional imbalance exists in both the development of market integration and green growth and gaps are expanding from year 2004 to 2018. (2) Market integration promotes regional green growth significantly. (3) Mechanism analysis illustrates that market integration fosters green growth through economies of scale effect, composition effect and spillover effect, respectively. (4) Heterogeneous analysis suggests that the influence from market integration on green growth varies depending on region's difference in traffic situation and in overall development level. An analysis of the number of research papers from India and China in the fields of sciences and engineering between the years 1975 and 2012 is presented. The results show that while Indian research output has increased steadily, the Chinese research output has been increasing at a rate far outpacing that of India. The research output of China has been increasing with distinct inflection points that show an acceleration in output growth. The research output for India shows periodic inflection points that show either an acceleration or deceleration in output growth. The possible reasons for the inflection points are discussed. Simple statistical analyses are used to analyze the trends in output. Although multiple factors affect a nation's research output, this paper highlights that the government programs targeted to increase the research output from universities may create inflection points resulting in a rapid increase in the research output. The article also highlights that India has fallen far behind China in terms of scientific and engineering research output, providing important clues for the future growth of the two countries. The share of nanotechnology publications involving authors from more than one country more than doubled in the 1990s, but then fell again until 2004, before recovering somewhat during the latter years of the decade. Meanwhile, the share of nanotechnology papers involving at least one Chinese author increased substantially over the last two decades. Papers involving Chinese authors are far less likely to be internationally co-authored than papers involving authors from other countries. Nonetheless, this appears to be changing as Chinese nanotechnology research becomes more advanced. An arithmetic decomposition confirms that China's growing share of such research accounts, in large part, for the observed stagnation of international collaboration. Thus two aspects of the globalization of science can work in opposing directions: diffusion to initially less scientifically advanced countries can depress international collaboration rates, while at the same time scientific advances in such countries can reverse this trend. We find that the growth of China's scientific community explains some, but not all of the dynamics of China's international collaboration rate. We therefore provide an institutional account of these dynamics, drawing on Stichweh's [Social Science information 35(2):327-340, 1996] original paper on international scientific collaboration, which, in examining the interrelated development of national and international scientific networks, predicts a transitional phase during which science becomes a more national enterprise, followed by a phase marked by accelerating international collaboration. Validating the application of this approach, we show that Stichweh's predictions, based on European scientific communities in the 18th and 19th centuries, seem to apply to the Chinese scientific community in the 21st century. In recent years, China and Saudi Arabia have had frequent exchanges in the political and economic fields, and public opinion evaluation is an essential aspect of evaluating the two countries' current relations. This paper analyzes tweets in Arabic discussing the Chinese president's visit to Saudi Arabia and the summits that were held between China and several Arab nations during that visit. The analysis uses one of CAMeLBERT's sentiment analysis models targeted toward dialectal Arabic and employs modified preprocessing steps to enhance the model's performance. The study finds that the majority of the tweets are neutral, due to extensive media coverage of the visit, and that positive tweets significantly outweigh negative tweets, which reflects that these events are perceived positively by the Arab public. Further content analysis reveals that the positive tweets discuss topics related to the outcomes and potentials for cooperation and strategic partnership between China and the Arab nations. Despite being outweighed by neutral and positive tweets, the negative tweets provide insight into the challenges that might face this partnership in future. These negative tweets discuss a variety of themes. First, they criticize America and Iran's strategies and highlight these countries' responses to the visit; second, they show concern over the potential subservience to China; third, they express fear that China might put its interests over others. The findings of this study are fundamental for the development of China–Arab relations as they provide crucial information about the challenges that need to be addressed in the future. This paper examines whether there is housing disparity between homeowners and renters. Using data from Chinese Urban Household Survey, we find that homeowners on average have much higher housing quality than renters after controlling for household characteristics, regional factors, location and time fixed effects, and such disparity increases significantly over time. We also find that the disparity is mainly concentrated on the people who are disabled, divorced and the people with low education or rural hukou. Furthermore, we investigate possible factors contributing to this increasing disparity. Our results suggest that the disparity is largely driven by increasingly home improvement for owner-occupied houses but not rental houses. In addition, we also find that the 1994-1998 housing reform has contributed to inequality in homeownership between state employees and other groups, especially the disadvantaged groups such as people with rural hukou who are completely excluded from the reform. With housing prices soaring in the past two decades, people who benefited from the housing reform in the 1990s have enjoyed enormous housing appreciation. However, the disadvantaged people who were excluded from the housing reform now live in the bad housing conditions. This paper examines the relationship among ecological footprint (EF), electricity consumption, and GDP in China using annual data ranging from 1960 to 2019. However, factors like trade openness, urbanization, and life expectancy might increase EF as ecological distortions are mainly human-induced. This study explores the effect of these variables on the environment, which is captured by EF. Quantile Regression estimates indicate that electricity consumption and real GDP increase environmental degradation, while trade and urbanization reduce EF, allowing for a higher environmental quality. On the other hand, the spectral Granger-causality tests reveal that only urbanization and life expectancy affect environmental degradation over the whole frequency domain. Population aging and carbon emissions are critical issues for China's development. As an enormous complex system, the population and the carbon emission development process have non-negligible differences in time, space, and speed. Therefore, this paper first demonstrates the spatial and temporal correlation between population aging and carbon emissions from 1995 to 2020, then uses the allometric growth analysis model to make a cross-sectional temporal comparison and a vertical spatial comparison of the relationship and development rate of the two, and finally uses the ridge regression model to determine the forces and interaction mechanisms of the factors influencing the relationship between population aging and carbon emissions at allometric rates. The results show that (1) China has a long-term positive temporal correlation effect relationship between population aging and carbon emissions from 1995 to 2020, and the overall correlation is high. The spatial correlation intensity between population aging and carbon emissions varies significantly across Chinese provinces, with a general spatial distribution trend of high in the south, low in the north, and prominent in the center. (2) China's population aging and carbon emissions mainly show a negative allometric growth type of relationship, i.e., a strong trend of population aging expansion and a strengthening trend of carbon emission system shrinking. The number of provinces with negative allometric growth is gradually increasing, mainly in North, East, Central, and Southwest China. (3) From 1995–2010 period to the 2011–2020 period, the influence of the factors of the population, production, and economic dimensions on the population aging index and the carbon emission allometric scalar index gradually weakened, and the influence of the consumption and technology dimensions increased significantly. The factors on the population and consumption side of the dimension mainly contribute to the expansion of carbon emissions and drive positive allometric growth. The production side, the economic structure, and technology dimension factors drive negative allometric growth. The paper fully explores the bidirectional correlation, differential development trend, and interaction mechanism between the two systems of population and carbon emissions and effectively compensates for the lack of research content in terms of elemental correlation, spatial and temporal connection, and speed synergy. Antibiotics are one of the greatest inventions in human history and are used worldwide on an enormous scale. Besides its extensive usage in medical and veterinary arenas to treat and prevent the infection, its application is very prominent in other fields, including agriculture, aquaculture, and horticulture. In recent decades, the increased consumption of antibiotics in China saw a vast increase in its production and disposal in various environments. However, in this post-antibiotic era, the abuse and misuse of these valuable compounds could lead to the unreversible consequence of drug resistance. In China, antibiotics are given a broad discussion in various fields to reveal their impact on both human/animals health and the environment. To our knowledge, we are the first paper to look back at the development trend of antibiotic-related studies in China with qualitative and quantitative bibliometric analysis from the past decades. Our study identified and analyzed 5559 papers from its inception (1991) to December 6, 2021, from the Web of Science Core Collection database. However, with few authors and institutions focusing on long-term studies, we found the quality of contributions was uneven. Studies mainly focused on areas such as food science, clinical research, and environmental studies, including molecular biology, genetics and environmental, ecotoxicology, and nutrition, which indicate possible primary future trends. Our study reports on including potentially new keywords, studies' milestones, and their contribution to antibiotic research. Over the past two decades, China has undergone a rapid urbanization process. As such, determining the current status of the quality of life in Chinese cities and how to improve it has become a common concern for all sectors of Chinese society. This paper employs a combination of city-level macro data and individual-level micro data to construct a quality of life evaluation system that contains 9 dimensions and 35 secondary indicators. The quality of life of 194 cities in China has been further assessed using the Pena distance method (DP2). The study found that there are significant regional differences in the quality of life in Chinese cities, with the quality of life in China's large cities being significantly higher than that in small and medium-sized cities. The analysis of Ivanovic discrimination coefficient shows that social security, culture and education and infrastructure are the most important factors affecting the quality of life in Chinese cities. Spatial mismatch analysis reveals that the quality of life and subjective well-being differ significantly in Chinese cities. In addition, this paper provides policy recommendations to improve the quality of urban life in China and to reduce the imbalance in the quality of life between regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite growing scholarly attention on the role of urban networks for understanding regional dynamics, there has been limited research examining the impact of cities' transportation network connections on regional market integration. This paper analyzes China's four major urban agglomerations: the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, and Chengdu-Chongqing. Applying a spatial Durbin model to cross-sectional datasets for 2019, we provide insight into the role of cities' transportation network connections in promoting regional market integration, considering both the potentially heterogeneous impact of network connections and the interplay between network and agglomeration externalities. Our results indicate that: (1) cities' transportation network connections have an inverted 'U'-shaped effect on regional market integration; (2) transportation network connections have spatial spillover effects; (3) the positive impact of transportation network connections on regional market integration becomes more pronounced as city size decreases; and (4) there are neither complementary nor substitution effects between network and agglomeration externalities. This systematic review consisted of 50 theoretical and empirical articles taking China as a specific case study for identifying efforts and challenges to teachers' digital competence, establishing an understanding of their use of concepts, disciplines, regions, methods, and analysis. The review follows the methodology based on the PRISMA statement and PICO strategy using the 2010–2023 search period. This research has four primary findings: (1) "teachers' ICT competency" and "teachers' information literacy" are the main terms used for describing teacher's use of technology for teaching and learning; (2) the current research mainly focused on investigating the status of teachers' digital competence, the influencing factors, and teacher training; (3) non-experimental study for the population of in-service teachers is the leading research directions related to teachers' digital competence in the context of China; (4) creating good ICT atmosphere by government and schools, conducting teacher training, and using good pedagogical strategies are three main proposals have been made to improve teachers' digital competence in China. The research findings provide the starting points for a subject of reflection and analysis of the Chinese teachers' digital competence status, and it can also support future empirical research. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is highly development-oriented and appeals to developing countries whose wish is to catch up with developed economies. China has called for co-construction of the BRI with all and sundry, particularly with African countries, which it has considered important and strategic in actualizing the BRI project. The call for co-construction echoes well with the African partners, who are keen on leveraging the BRI for their own development. Tied to China's status as a rising economic power, both partners have agreed to align the BRI with the African Union's development agenda for complementary and beneficial development. Our paper revealed that although the call for co-construction of the BRI is a welcomed initiative, there are potential setbacks that abound, and therefore offered strategies for responding to China's call for co-construction of the BRI. Confronted with the accelerating global warming, humans need to take tremendous efforts to decelerate global temperature rise. Climate policy is believed to be effective to cope with climate change; particularly, emission trading scheme (ETS) can significantly curb carbon emissions, thereby decelerating global warming and reducing climate damage. In this paper, we have designed an integrated assessment model (IAM) to analyze primary benefit of the ETS in China as a case study. Primary benefit is defined as avoided damage from warming impacts on sea level, crop yield, labor productivity, and labor health. The IAM results show that the global temperature will rise by 0.7 °C in 2021–2030 under the current mitigation efforts; this temperature rise causes GDP loss. The ETS has significant and negative effects on labor input, whereas primary benefit of the ETS slightly increases labor input. The quantified primary benefit in this paper is much lower than abatement cost, as we have only quantified primary benefit locally where the ETS is implemented. This finding implies that neglecting global climate benefit, regional climate policy tends to be unattractive to policymakers; in other words, there is a free-rider issue in designing climate policy. The utilization efficiency of agricultural water resources has an overall and long-term impact on agricultural development. However, owing to serious wastage of agricultural water resources for a long time, low utilization efficiency of such water resources has become a common problem in developing countries. Past studies have paid scant attention to the impact of soft factors, namely farmers' educational level and market-oriented reforms, especially in a quantified form, on the improvement of agricultural water utilization efficiency. This study adopted the system Generalized Method of Moments estimation method of a dynamic panel model and used provincial panel data from China for 2007–2020 period. The results show that the utilization efficiency of agricultural water resources can indeed be improved by either promoting farmers' education levels or deepening market-oriented reforms. However, with the advancement of market-oriented reforms, the influence of farmers' education level on the utilization efficiency of agricultural water resources gradually weakens, which is due to the "agricultural to non-agricultural" effect. Finally, this paper proposes policy suggestions to improve the utilization efficiency of agricultural water resources from three perspectives: improving the education level of farmers, optimizing the agricultural water pricing system, and improving the agricultural water rights trading system. What type of investment strategies are effective for foreign venture capital (VC) firms investing in transition economies? This is the research question we address in this paper by analyzing recent institutional developments and investment activities of foreign VC firms investing in China. We find that foreign VC firms identify China as lacking fully-developed institutions necessary to effectively support VC investing. We further find that foreign VCs have evolved unique proactive, hands-on investment strategies via a bumpy road of investing in China: initially dominating the Chinese VC industry, but since the great financial recession playing a still-significant but reduced and disadvantaged-role subservient to the rapidly increasing role of domestic VC firms. We developed a novel triangulation research methodology that allows us to provide significantly more depth in our analysis of how foreign VCs compete in transition economies. This research contributes to both the institutional theory and VC investing literatures. We suggest that foreign VCs can increase their competitive advantage by developing hands-on value-added investing strategies, when investing in transitioning markets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Regional trade agreements increasingly include provisions that regulate state-owned enterprises. This paper combines new information on the content of "deep" regional trade agreements and data on Chinese firm-level exports during 2000–2011 to analyze the spillover effect of rules on state-owned enterprises on the intensive and extensive margins of Chinese state-owned enterprises' trade. Rather than containing state capitalism, regional trade agreements regulating state-owned enterprises signed by Chinese trading partners with third countries increase exports and entry of Chinese state-owned enterprises as they gain a competitive edge in regulated markets. This spillover effect is robust to several extensions and is even stronger for agreements that include rules on subsidies and competition policy. Rhymes are popular tools in children's learning in many cultures, but the pedagogical underpinnings of rhyme practice are largely unknown. Drawing on insights from a study in China, this paper explores the pedagogical meaning and function of rhymes in early childhood education. Individual interviews were conducted with 10 Chinese early childhood teachers and a series of classroom observations of teachers' rhyme practices were undertaken. An overarching theme from the data was the multifunctionality of rhymes, or in teachers' words 'they can do many things'. Framed by the notion of tools in sociocultural theory and existing studies on rhymes as a pedagogical tool, this theme is discussed with reference to the discourses on mediation, habitual practice, and professional support which bring to the fore some issues in Chinese early childhood education. The Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) is an important ecological barrier in China. From new perspectives, this paper explores the mechanism of high-speed rail (HSR) for green economic growth (GEG) in the YREB. This paper constructs 108 city panel data at the prefecture level and above in the YREB from 2003 to 2020. Difference-in-differences (DID) is adopted to research the impact of high-speed rail on GEG in the YREB. (1) HSR has significantly improved the GEG of the YREB. The effect value is 4.88%. The parallel trend test suggests that DID is valid. A time-varying instrumental variable combining average altitude and historical railway network is constructed for the endogeneity test. (2) Propensity score matching (PSM) and DID (PSM-DID) were employed to test the sample selection bias. (3) A battery of robustness tests, including the placebo test, variable replacement, and policy interference exclusion, is carried out. The conclusions are still valid. (4) HSR can promote the GEG of the YREB by encouraging technological innovation, industrial upgrading, and increasing ecological efficiency. The contribution rate from the largest to the smallest is ecological efficiency, industrial upgrading, and technological innovation. (5) Heterogeneity analysis shows that HSR has played an important role in encouraging GEG in the eastern, peripheral cities, and the downstream cities of the YREB. In recent years, energy efficiency has been considered an extremely cost-effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. China is a country with the world’s largest coal consumption and heavy reliance on thermal power generation. Therefore, the relationship between the coal consumption constraint policy (CCCP) in China and electrical energy efficiency is a topic worthy of study. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China during 2005–2016, this paper employs the difference-in-differences (DID) to examine the impact of CCCP on electrical energy efficiency in China. The results indicate that the implementation of the CCCP reduces electrical energy efficiency in the pilot provinces. Based on the mechanism tests, the cost effect outweighs the innovation effect, which is why CCCP decreases electrical energy efficiency. The results of the heterogeneity analysis show that the influence of CCCP is more significant in the provinces with weak law enforcement and small hydropower investment and northern provinces. This study suggests that the Chinese government can promote corporate technological innovation by improving the environmental compensation system and increasing environmental law enforcement to improve electrical energy efficiency. China, as the world's largest carbon dioxide emitter, is bound to assume the important responsibility of energy conservation and emission reduction. To this end, each city, led by representative municipalities, must enhance efforts in carbon emission reduction to jointly realize China's low-carbon transition. Taking four representative municipalities, namely, Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing as the case cities, this paper establishes a decomposition analysis for the driving factors of carbon emissions by applying the LMDI method covering data from 2007 to 2017. Kaya identity is used to decompose the effects into eight driving factors: GDP effect, industrial structure effect, energy intensity effect, overall energy structure effect, population effect, urbanization effect, per capita energy consumption effect, urban and rural energy structure effect. The results show that at the municipality level, the driving factors that contribute to carbon emissions are the GDP growth effect and the population effect, with the former still being the most important factor in the municipalities with faster economic growth; and industrial structure effect is the most important factor that inhibits carbon emissions, followed by energy structure effect. This paper considers the driving factors of both the production side and the residential consumption side from the city level. The research reveals the main driving factors that effect the carbon emissions of megacities in developing countries, and highlights the leading role of megacities in terms of carbon emission reduction in China and even the world. The sustainable development of China's economy is bottlenecked by resource shortage and environmental pollution. As the leading resource consumer and pollutant source, the industrial sector needs to improve its energy efficiency. This paper establishes a super epsilon-based measure (Super-EBM) model with bad outputs like environmental cost and evaluates the industrial green total-factor energy efficiencies (IGTFEEs) of 30 provinces in China during 2000–2017. Unlike previous research, the main contribution of this paper is to choose four environmental pollutants as bad outputs (industrial carbon dioxide, industrial sulfur dioxide, industrial chemical oxygen demand, industrial solid waste). By contrast, the previous studies mostly only take one environmental pollutant as bad output, i.e., the bad outputs are not fully measured. Then, the spatiotemporal dynamics and spatial correlations of the IGTFEEs were analyzed, and the influencing factors of IGTFEE were examined empirically with a spatial econometric model. Finally, this paper adopts generalized method of moments (GMM) to solve the endogenous problem, trying to assure the robustness of estimation results. The results show significant provincial differences in IGTFEE. Most eastern coastal provinces achieved satisfactory IGTFEEs, while most inland provinces had undesirable IGTFEEs. Eastern region achieved the highest IGTFEE, followed by central region; western region had the lowest IGTFEE. The IGTFEE improved over time in some provinces while worsened greatly in some provinces. The IGTFEE in most provinces need to be further improved. Global Moran's I values indicate that the provincial IGTFEEs were clustered in space, rather than randomly distributed. Local indication of spatial association (LISA) map reflects significant local spatial clustering of provincial IGTFEEs. In addition, IGTFEE is significantly promoted by industrial structure, technological innovation, human capital, opening-up, and energy structure yet significantly suppressed by ownership structure and environmental regulation. Considering the endogeneity, GMM results show that the estimation results of the model were robust. Specific policy recommendations include vigorously developing high-tech industries, deepening state-owned enterprises reform, diverting more funds to research and development, cultivating versatile talents, introducing environmentally-friendly foreign capital, accelerating the implementation of clean energy development strategy, and widening the fund channels of pollution control investment. Under the policy background of "joint prevention and control" of global greenhouse gas emission reduction and regional air pollutants, the power industry, as an important target industry of energy conservation and emission reduction policies, has become an effective choice to release dual pressures. In this paper, the "bottom-up" emission factor method was used to measure the emission of CO2 and NOX from 2011 to 2019. Then, the contributions of six factors to NOX emission reduction in China's power industry were identified using the Kaya identity and logarithmic mean divisia index (LMDI) decomposition methods. The research results show that (1) there is a significant synergistic emission reduction effect between CO2 emission reduction and NOX emission reduction; (2) the factor that inhibits the growth of NOX emissions reduction in the power industry is economic development factor; and (3) the main factors that promote the reduction of NOX emission from the power industry are synergy effect, energy intensity, power generation intensity, and power production structure factors. Several suggestions are proposed, which are the power industry should adjust its structure, improve energy intensity, focus on applying low-nitrogen combustion technology, and improve the air pollutant emission information disclosure system to reduce NOX emissions. China has made huge efforts to increase the efficiency of its resources and change its resource-intensive economic trajectory. A question which should be raised is whether the impacts of such shifts can be measured. Exergy analysis provides a unified method of ecological diagnosis of resource allocation and metabolism in social systems from a biophysical perspective. This paper explores the resource utilization pattern within Chinese society by employing an exergy-based accounting method. Nationally total resource consumption amounted to 153.7 EJ in 2017, and non-biological resources reached 137.1 EJ. China's resource self-sufficiency rate was revealed as 79.1%. After China experienced a transition period with a medium–high economic growth rate, the total net resource input into Chinese society marked an increase of around 1% from 2012 to 2017. The per capita resource consumption dropped from 112.0 GJ in 2012 to 110.6 GJ in 2017. The proportion of resource exergy consumption in the tertiary sector was upregulated from 10.0% in 2012 to 17.6% in 2017. To be specific, the exergy conversion efficiency of the domestic sector rose from 1.3% in 2012 to 20.6% in 2017. The results confirm that the resource exergy utilization structures and the conversion efficiencies of the main social sectors in China's economic transition period were significantly optimized towards a more sustainable future. A reasonable analysis of the resource exergy utilization pattern provides a solid reference for assessing the comprehensive effect of the changed development speed, industrial structure, and driving force of a developing society. The renovation problem of old residential areas is not only a city management task, but also a major engineering of benefiting the people, which is related to the people living and working in peace and contentment and the improvement of the overall image of the city. In order to improve the appearance of old residential areas in Chinese cities and the living conditions of their residents, city planners must take a scientific and structured approach to renovation. After analyzing current status of the old residential in several major Chinese cities, consulting the literature, and undertaking field investigations, this paper summarizes the main influencing factors on renovation decision-making. We propose five hypotheses, which we test using questionnaire survey data, sample analysis of these influencing factors, and a structural equation model (SEM). The results show that the degree of influence of each factor on renovation decisions ranks as technology being the most influential, followed by the economy, policy, the environment, and society. Household food waste (HFW) accounted for about 66% of global food waste's total carbon footprints (CF). Based on China's macro-panel food consumption data, this paper measures the urban–rural and provincial differences in the HFW CF from scale, structure, and temporal-spatial evolution perspectives. The results indicate that HFW and CF continue to grow, and the total CF and per capita HFW in urban households are higher than in rural households. The structural differences between urban and rural HFW CF vary significantly over time and spaces, which reflected that rural households in the southeastern coastal areas have higher per capita HFW CF than urban in 2019. The research results help to clarify the distribution and evolution pattern of HFW CF in China and offer new ideas for the differentiated governance of CF reduction in the food system. The chalara-like anamorphs of Leotiomycetes are phialidic hyphomycetes with cylindrical collarettes and deeply seated sporulating loci, and hyaline, aseptate or septate, cylindrical conidia. They are commonly found on plant litters in both terrestrial and submerged environments, and with broad geographical distribution. This paper reports our research result of diversity, taxonomy and phylogeny of these fungi in China, which is based on a systematic study by using an integrated approach of literature study, morphological observation and phylogenetic analyses of 153 chalara-like fungal species with diversified morphology in conidiomata, setae, conidiophores, phialides and conidia. The phylogenetic analyses employing different datasets of SSU, LSU and ITS sequences of 116 species showed that these chalara-like fungi were paraphyletic and scattered in 20 accepted genera belonging to five families of Leotiomycetes: Arachnopezizaceae, Hamatocanthoscyphaceae, Helotiaceae, Neolauriomycetaceae and Pezizellaceae. Additional six genera, Ascoconidium, Bioscypha, Chalarodendron, Didonia, Phaeoscypha and Tapesina, all reported with chalara-like anamorphs in literatures, are also accepted as members of Pezizellaceae or Leotiomycetes genera incertae sedis. Among of these 26 accepted genera of chalara-like fungi in Leotiomycetes, 17 genera are asexually typified genera (Ascoconidium, Bloxamia, Chalara, Chalarodendron, Constrictochalara, Cylindrochalara, Cylindrocephalum, Leochalara, Lareunionomyces, Minichalara, Neochalara, Neolauriomyces, Nagrajchalara, Parachalara, Stipitochalara, Xenochalara and Zymochalara), and 9 are sexually typified genera (Bioscypha, Bloxamiella, Calycellina, Calycina, Didonia, Hymenoscyphus, Mollisina, Phaeoscypha and Tapesina). The phylogenetic significance of conidial septation in generic delimitation was further confirmed; while other morphologies such as conidiomata, setae, conidiophores, phialides, conidial length, and conidial ornamentation have little phylogenetic significance, but could be used for species delimitation. The polyphyletic genus Chalara s. lat. is revised with monophyletic generic concepts by redelimitation of Chalara s. str. in a narrow concept, adaption of the emended Calycina to also include asexually typified chalara-like fungi, reinstatement of Cylindrocephalum, and introduction of six new genera: Constrictochalara W.P. Wu & Y.Z. Diao, Leochalara W.P. Wu & Y.Z. Diao, Minichalara W.P. Wu & Y.Z. Diao, Nagrajchalara W.P. Wu & Y.Z. Diao, Parachalara W.P. Wu & Y.Z. Diao and Stipitochalara W.P. Wu & Y.Z. Diao. Chaetochalara becomes a synonym of Chalara s. str., and the known species are disassembled into Chalara s. str. and Nagrajchalara. The polyphyletic genus Bloxamia is also redefined by introducing the new genus Bloxamiella W.P. Wu & Y.Z. Diao for B. cyatheicola. Five existing species of Chalara s. lat. were excluded from Leotiomycetes and reclassified: Chalara breviclavata as Chalarosphaeria breviclavata W.P. Wu & Y.Z. Diao gen. et sp. nov. in Chaetosphaeriaceae, C. vaccinii as Sordariochalara vaccinii W.P. Wu & Y.Z. Diao gen. et sp. nov. in Lasiosphaeriaceae, and three other Chalara species with hyaline phialides, C. hyalina, C. schoenoplecti and C. siamense as combinations of Pyxidiophora in Pyxidiophoraceae. For biodiversity of these fungi in China, a total of 80 species in 12 genera, including 60 new species, 17 new records and 1 new name, were discovered and documented in this paper. In addition, five species including three new species are reported from Japan. In connection to this revision, a total of 44 new combinations are made. The identification keys are provided for most of these genera. Future research area of these fungi should be the phylogenetic relationship of several sexually typified genera such as Bioscypha, Calycellina, Calycina, Didonia, Phaeoscypha, Rodwayella and Tapesina, and systematic revision of existing names under the genera Bloxamia, Chaetochalara and Chalara. Until recently, modern science had been dominated by a handful of Western countries. However, since the turn of the millennium, the global science landscape has undergone dramatic changes. The number of nations where a significant proportion of research done is of high international standard has now increased considerably. China particularly stands out and is today one of the leading science nations in the world. Overall, Chinese research collaborations with countries in the Western world exemplify the general trend towards increasing complexity in the global research landscape. It has gradually become obvious that differences between institutional settings need to be managed more systematically to promote cross-border research cooperation for shared benefits, from individual to institutional levels. An informed discussion of managing complex conditions necessitates an understanding of the relationship-level dynamics of research collaborations. In order to identify what aspects of international research collaborations are the most pertinent to systematically manage at individual and institutional levels, this paper investigates projects in a bilateral Swedish–Chinese funding program. The paper finds that the majority of collaborations funded had yielded positive impact in terms of publications, strengthened research capacity in research groups, and resource accumulation. Climate change has a profound impact on human survival and development. Climate change is an energy and economic issue, which should be driven by technology. Total factor energy efficiency (TFEE) improvement is undoubtedly a breakthrough in solving energy problems. In this paper, the fixed effect model, impulse response function, and threshold regression model are used to test the complex relationship between export sophistication and TFEE. The results reveal that export sophistication improvement leads to higher TFEE. The impulse response results verify the existence of a phased and positive correlation between export sophistication and TFEE. Finally, the relationship between export sophistication and TFEE significantly varied across different threshold levels of regional corruption score, economic development, and openness. This article led the foundation for supporting China's export sophistication promotion strategy and also provides a reference for energy efficiency improvement and energy crisis response in the post-pandemic era. Cobalt recycling is important for solving environmental problems such as resource shortage and pollution emissions. This paper quantifies the positive significance of cobalt recycling on resource replenishment and pollution emission by using the substance flow analysis and life cycle analysis. The results show that the proportion of recycled cobalt supplied as cobalt raw material is 7.1%, which improves the supply structure of the resource. Meanwhile, the environmental impact of recycling cobalt using the combined treatment process is low. The environmental impact of mining cobalt from mines is about 4.03–41.53 times that of recycling cobalt from cobaltiferous waste materials. However, the overall cobalt recycling is not ideal. First, the cobalt recycling rate is growing slowly. From 1994 to 2020, 245,132 t of cobalt-containing final products entered waste management in China. However, only 79,593 t of cobalt have been recycled, with a recycling rate of 32.47%. Secondly, many recycling enterprises only carry out recycling for a certain type of cobaltiferous waste materials due to the non-uniform cobalt recycling process. Finally, China's cobalt recycling policy does not divide the recycling channels for cobalt waste and does not regulate the specific process. In the future, China should set up separate recycling systems for cobaltiferous waste materials according to different categories and consider adopting combined treatment processes. Under the background of the deep convergence of China's digital services and manufacturing, it is of great significance to investigate the effects of the convergence of digital services and manufacturing on economic growth and carbon emissions reduction to the application of digital technology in the whole world. This paper constructs a simultaneous equation model and uses three-stage least squares to estimate the effect and mechanism of industrial convergence on economic growth and carbon emissions. The results show that (i) industrial convergence improves the change of total factor productivity (TFP) and the change of technical efficiency, and the reduction of carbon emissions is the main factor driving the growth of TFP and technical efficiency; (ii) industrial convergence and carbon emissions show a significant U-shaped relationship; (iii) the heterogeneity analysis shows that the convergence of capital-intensive, technology-intensive and labor-intensive manufacturing with digital services will help to improve the growth of TFP, it can inhibit carbon emissions first and then promote it. Therefore, the government should take targeted measures to promote industrial convergence of digital services and manufacturing according to the economic development and industry characteristics, so as to give full play to its positive role in economic growth and emissions reduction. The significance of environmental protection activities is well known, but little literature has focused on the well-being effects of environmental protection behavior among farmer groups. This study provides new literature support for farmers and rural development issues. Using data from the 2013 China Integrated Social Survey, a systematic and robust examination of the happiness effects of environmental protection behavior among Chinese farmers and their transmission mechanisms was conducted with the help of multiple regression techniques and mediated impact analysis. The study found that Chinese farmers' environmental protection behavior can directly trigger the experience of well-being and also indirectly enhance subjective well-being by improving the quality of life in other areas, thanks to their characteristics in avoiding environmental risks and enhancing social interactions. Increased education may contribute to farmers being more motivated by benefits such as material rewards, experience, and skills, and thus experiencing less well-being from environmental protection behavior. The fact that farmers of all household incomes experience equal well-being from environmental protection behavior is consistent with the view of non-differential well-being experiences in the volunteering literature. The research in this paper adds new evidence to the existing literature and provides an essential reference for policymakers and participants in rural development in China. In addition, studying individual issues in environmental governance in rural China provides a Chinese case study and practical lessons for farmer development in other countries worldwide. In this paper, we also propose a new simulator to evaluate the impact of massive infections and contagious diseases on the economic performance subsequently. The dramatic land use changes that occur in rapidly urbanized areas are important inducement to changes in the eco-environmental quality. Investigating urban land use changes and their eco-environmental quality responses can provide theoretical support and a decision-making basis for sustainable and high-quality development in rapidly urbanizing areas. Taking Wuhan, China, as the study area, this paper extracts land use information using Landsat satellite remote sensing images and a support vector machine classification. Based on this, a remote sensing-based ecological index evaluation model including humidity, greenness, dryness and heat is constructed to explore the changes in land use and their eco-environmental quality responses from 2000 to 2018. The results show that (1) the structure, extent and spatial layout of land use in Wuhan from 2000 to 2018 have undergone tremendous changes under rapid urbanization, and the change of construction land is the greatest among all land use types; (2) the overall quality of eco-environment in Wuhan continues to improve as the scale of the improved eco-environment areas is greater than that of the deteriorated areas. The direction and magnitude of the impact of each indicator on the eco-environmental quality are different; (3) the improvement or deterioration of eco-environmental quality is closely related to the changes of different land use types within the study area. The eco-environmental quality shows significant spatial heterogeneity, especially between the main urban areas and the suburban areas. This paper argues that reasonably adjusting the land use structure can serve to maintain or even improve the quality of the regional eco-environment. Whether China's carbon emissions trading (CET) has an impact on the financial performance of the market players of carbon trading, i.e., firms, is crucial to the sustainable development of national economy and carbon trading market. Based on the panel data of the listed firms in the seven high energy-consuming industries in China during 2010-2017, this paper uses the DID model to study the impact of CET on the firms' financial performance. The empirical results show that the impact of CET on firms' financial performance presents obvious industrial heterogeneity; CET policy reduces the financial performance of firms in the nonferrous metal industry but improves that in the power industry. In addition, with the implementation of CET policy, its impact on the financial performance of firms in the nonferrous metal and power industries is increasingly intensifying. Finally, there is a lag of 2-4 years on the impact of CET on the firms' financial performance in the chemical, paper and aviation industries, and the effects change from negative to positive over time. This paper presents an empirical analysis of regional disparities from 2000 to 2012 based on a time series of data involving 74 cities within three mega-urban regions along Yangtze River in China. Differing from previous researches on inter-provincial and coastal/interior data, this paper provides a new perspective of mega-urban regions and their cities in China. By Coefficient of Variation and Analysis of Variance the selection of three mega-urban regions along Yangtze River reveals how the mega-urban regional disparities evolve among the east, middle and west up to date in China. In terms of general trend the mega-urban regional inequalities have been decreasing ever since the year around 2005. By traditional regression modeling this paper relates the mega-urban regional inequality and the alleviation to the urbanization and its focus on mega-urban regional development. The regression shows that the evolution of intra mega-urban regions disparities is negatively influenced by the urbanization with meaningful statistical significance from 2000 to 2012. The multilevel regression is further applied based on the nested hierarchical data structure. The results indicate a complicated relationship of the urban population density of the city level, the urbanization ratio of the mega-urban region level and the urban disparities in 2012. The calculation of marginal abatement costs of CO2 plays a vital role in meeting China’s 2020 emission reduction targets by providing reference for determining carbon tax and carbon trading pricing. However, most existing researches only used one method to discuss regional and industrial marginal abatement costs, and almost no studies predicted future marginal abatement costs from the perspective of CO2 emission efficiency. To make up for the gaps, this paper first estimates marginal abatement costs of CO2 in three major industries of 30 provinces in China from 2005 to 2015 based on three assumptions. Second, based on the principle of fairness and efficiency, China’s 2020 emission reduction targets are decomposed by province. Based on the ZSG-C-DDF model, the marginal abatement costs of CO2 in all provinces in China in 2020 are estimated and compared with the marginal abatement costs of 2005 to 2015. The results show that (1) from 2005 to 2015, marginal abatement costs of CO2 in all provinces show a fluctuating upward trend; (2) compared with the marginal abatement costs of primary industry or tertiary industry, most provinces have lower marginal abatement costs for secondary industry; and (3) the average marginal abatement costs of CO2 for China in 2020 are 2766.882 Yuan/tonne for the 40% carbon intensity reduction target and 3334.836 Yuan/tonne for the 45% target, showing that the higher the emission reduction target, the higher the marginal abatement costs of CO2. (4) Overall, the average marginal abatement costs of CO2 in China by 2020 are higher than those in 2005-2015. China's rising in scientific research output is impressive. The academic community is curious about the time when the cross-over in the number of annual scientific publication production between China and the USA can happen. By using Web of Science Core Collection's Science Citation Index Expanded database, this study finds that China still ranks the second in the production of SCI-indexed publications in 2019 but may leapfrog the USA to be the first in 2020 or 2021, if all document types are considered. Comparatively, China has already overtaken the USA and been the largest SCI-indexed original research article producer since 2018. However, China still lags behind the USA regarding the number of review paper production. In general, quantitative advantage does not equal quality or impact advantage. Renewable energy plays a significant role in achieving energy savings and emission reduction. As a sustainable and environmental friendly renewable energy power technology, concentrated solar power (CSP) integrates power generation and energy storage to ensure the smooth operation of the power system. However, the cost of CSP is an obstacle hampering the commercialization of this emerging industry, so the paper studies the technical characteristics, economic analysis, and policy implications of CSP. This paper sorts out the relevant policies of CSP and uses the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) model by considering financial parameters, investment parameters, operation and maintenance parameters, tax parameters, capacity parameters, etc., to analyze the economics of CSP. The model parameters are set by the actual situation of CSP projects. The economic evaluation of different technology types of parabolic trough (PT), solar tower (ST), secondary reflection ST, and linear Fresnel reflector (LFR) is carried out. The LCOE of PT project is 1.11 RMB/kWh (0.17 US$/kWh), the ST project is 0.93 RMB/kWh (0.14 US$/kWh), the secondary reflection ST project is 0.97 RMB/kWh (0.15 US$/kWh), and the LFR project is 0.92 RMB/kWh (0.14 US$/kWh). The results show that the grid parity era of CSP in China is within reach, and ST is the most potential technology type. Based on the results of economic analysis and the problems faced by CSP in China, this paper puts forward policy implications by preferential loans, tax incentives, and R&D fund support to promote the development of CSP. This paper provides evidence of regulatory capture in China's environmental regulation by exploring the relationship between subnational leaders' tenure and local firms' environmental protection behaviors. We find that firms discharge more exhaust and make less effort to abate air pollution when mayors' tenure increases. The results are robust to alternative specifications and measures, but show heterogeneity across regions and ownerships. The intensity of regulatory capture depends on institutional factors and firm characteristics. This study enriches the literature by analyzing regulatory capture under a regionally decentralized authoritarian system and provides clear policy implications for preventing regulatory capture. During the outbreak of COVID-19, concern significantly influenced our financial system. This new paper's primary assessment of the COVID-19 virus affects the world's major economies and financial markets. This paper utilizes an event analysis approach and a data model to investigate the influence of COVID-19 on the financial market system from three viewpoints: (1) supply chain finance and titles, (2) processing system, and (3) the financial system of the organization. According to data analysis, the model built in this work may properly depict the influence of COVID-19 on the financial market system. The results indicated that the low age coefficient (p-value (p 0.05)) and a higher blocking condition (p-value (p > 0.05)) impact city tourism market system with p-values of 0.002 and 0.004, respectively. Other results show the impact of the Chinese New Year vacations. In recent years, under the background of vigorously promoting environmental governance, the implementation effect of the central environmental protection inspection is an issue of great concern to the government and the public. This paper systematically investigates the impact of central environmental protection inspection on the risk of stock price crash using a sample of listed firms in polluting industries. The results show that compared with non-supervised areas, central environmental protection inspection can reduce the polluting industries' firms' stock price crash risk by reducing stock price bubbles. After a series of robustness tests, the results still held. The above transmission mechanism is more effective in the samples of private enterprises, low information transparency and disclosure quality enterprises, non-national civilized urban areas, and high promotion incentive areas. Furthermore, this paper found that there were differences in the effects of central environmental protection inspection in different batches. Among the effects of central environmental protection inspection in different batches, the effect of environmental regulation in the second, third, and fourth batches was better, and the effect of central environmental protection inspection in different batches gradually deepened. Finally, by analyzing the environmental governance of the central environmental protection inspection, it is found that the central environmental protection inspection has significant short-term and long-term control effect in air pollution governance, and it is still necessary to strengthen the law enforcement in water pollution governance. Flood susceptibility mapping is an important method for flood research. In this paper, we combine a backpropagation neural network (BPNN) with a genetic quantum algorithm (GQA) for the first time to develop flood susceptibility mapping. The area on the Chinese side of the Tumen River Basin was selected as the research object. A set of flood conditioning factors was selected based on relevant literature and an actual situation and then validated using the chi-square test and correlation analysis. Different weights were assigned using stepwise weight assessment ratio analysis. Finally, modeling and flood susceptibility mapping using GQA-BPNN. As a reference, the same work was performed with both the pure BPNN and optimized BPNN using a genetic algorithm (GA). The results show that the area under the curve, root mean squared error, Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient and percentage of bias are significantly better for the GQA-BPNN than for the BPNN and GA-BPNN and that the flood sensitivity maps constructed by the GQA-BPNN have more flood points in high flood sensitivity areas. This paper uses Chinese provincial data from 2006 to 2021 as a sample period to study the relationship between higher education development, industrial structure adjustment, and environmental pollution. Conclusions were as follows: (1) the industry structure adjustment can reduce environmental pollution in Chinese regions except eastern, and the increase in the proportion of the tertiary industry will increase pollution emissions in the eastern region. (2) Although there is a negative correlation between higher education and environmental pollution in China, it is not significant. From different regions, the coefficients in the eastern are positive which means aggravated environmental pollution, and the coefficients in the central region are not significant, but higher education in the western region improves environmental pollution. (3) Urbanization has a significant moderating effect on the national and regional environmental pollution, but in the central and western regions, it is smaller than the eastern region; although environmental regulation has a certain inhibitory effect on environmental pollution, the coefficient in the eastern region is significantly positive, and there is a situation of "more pollution, more control." Further, the increase of foreign direct investment will aggravate environmental pollution; although the elasticity coefficient in the eastern region is negative, there is a trend of improving environmental pollution, but it is not significant. The study holds promising implications for the development of policies related to education, industry, and the environment. Through the research on the relationship between the three, exploring and improving the regional environmental pollution level from the perspective of higher education and industrial structure have important practical significance for the regional green development. Based on public data such as the Educational Statistics Yearbook and the National Statistics Yearbook, this paper analyzes the equalization trend of fundamental education in the Tibet Autonomous Region (hereinafter referred to as Tibet), China, using data on running conditions in primary and middle schools in Tibet from 2013 to 2020, and carries out clustering of the rankings of data from China in 2020. The results show that the equalization level of primary and middle education in Tibet has continuously improved from 2013 to 2020. This is evidenced by the increases and improvements in education funding per student, student-teacher ratios, numbers and academic qualifications of teachers, per capita teaching areas and per capita teaching assets. In 2020, the per student education fee in Tibet took the lead in China's 31 provincial regions, and the student-teacher ratio was close to the national average. Running conditions in primary and middle schools in Tibet still require improvement. This is reflected in the low proportion of full-time teaching staff in primary and middle schools, lack of teachers with senior professional titles in middle schools, area of auxiliary teaching facilities (laboratories, computer rooms, gymnasiums, etc.) in middle schools, and especially in high schools, and shortage of teaching assets (books, computers, multimedia classrooms) in middle schools.
