Betting on the various codes of football in Australia accounts for the majority of sports betting, with Australian rules football (AFL) by far the most popular sport in Australia. Several studies have revealed the heavy presence of gambling advertising during AFL broadcasts, and a frequently used advertising strategy involves the use of well-known AFL commentators outlining their tips and betting suggestions. To date, no research has examined the hypotheses that skill may help in predicting AFL matches and monetary outcomes from AFL betting. Rather than merely discounting such ideas, it is important to test them empirically. The aims of this study were therefore, to examine if (1) expert AFL tipsters made better predictions than random picks, (2) expert AFL tipsters gained greater monetary reward than random selection, and (3) expert tipsters' prediction accuracy improved with betting experience. To this end, six seasons of AFL matches, odds data, and expert tipster data were analysed retrospectively, totalling 1141 matches. Random selections were calculated for each match using an inbuilt random number generator within Microsoft Excel and a $2 simulated wager was applied for each AFL match. The results of mixed-effects modelling showed that experts picked more correct outcomes than random selection; experts' correct predictions were partially mediated by home-game selections; no difference in monetary outcome was observed for experts compared to random selection; experts' predictions did not improve over time. The results of this study may be used to inform both psychological interventions that target gamblers' illusions of control, and public health gambling harm prevention messaging. There has been increasing interest in the study of Blastocystis in the last two decades. Many studies have been carried out in human and animal hosts including environmental sources, but there is little or no information on the occurrence of Blastocystis in water sources worldwide. Therefore, this study aimed at assessing the occurrence of Blastocystis in water sources across the world from 2005 to 2022, noting the method of detection and the distribution of the subtypes from various water sources. A literature search was performed on internet-based databases including Google search, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Upon application of the criteria for inclusion, 25 articles revealing the occurrence of Blastocystis in water sources in 15 countries were included in the review. Blastocystis occurrence varies across water sources ranging from 0% in a drinking water source in Venezuela to 100% in rivers; well water, stored water, and fishpond in Nepal and Malaysia; and fountain water, irrigation water, and rainwater in Italy, Spain, and Thailand. The occurrence of the parasite was significantly associated with the coliform count, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, total dissolved solids, and chemical oxygen demand. A total of 11 Blastocystis subtypes were identified in water sources worldwide, namely, ST1–ST8, ST10, ST23, and ST26 in which ST1 and ST3 were the most prevalent subtypes. Considering the importance of Blastocystis as a waterborne parasite, the subtype distribution and morphological distinction in water sources need to be carried out using molecular and electron microscopic techniques. Biomimetic superhydrophobic (SH) coatings have emerged as a promising alternative to traditional room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone rubber coatings for improving the flashover strength of insulators. However, organic contamination occurs in outdoor applications and thus a superamphiphobic (SAP) surface is more desirable but not yet reported for improving flashover performance. Herein, we developed a novel anti-flashover technique by fabricating robust SAP coating with unique gradient and micro-nanoscale hierarchical architecture. The SAP coating was fabricated by sequentially spray-depositing a resin-based primer and a silica-based topcoat on substrates (i.e., glass slides and insulators). The primer not only functions as an adhesive offering strong adhesion to the substrate but also offers a micromastoid-like structure facilitating the subsequent formation of hierarchical micro-nanostructure. The appropriate spraying pressure leads to a diffusion of the fluorocarbon-modified silica nanoparticles into the primer to form a unique gradient structure, by analogy to inserting bullets into a wood. These features render the SAP coating excellent robustness with strong abrasive resistance, excellent ultraviolet (UV) resistance, and excellent chemical and thermal stability. Pollution flashover property of the SAP coating was explored and compared with that of SH and RTV specimens, from which a novel organic-contamination model to evaluate the flashover performance was proposed. The coated SAP glass insulator demonstrated 42.9% pollution flashover voltage improvement than RTV-coated insulator. These stated unique features reveal the convincing potential of the present SAP coatings to be applied for not only outdoor transmission line insulators for anti-flashover but also other fields for self-cleaning, anti-fouling, and anti-icing. This research examined the relationships of social network sites (SNS) intensity, parasocial interaction (PSI), and the propensity to imitate idols or celebrities. Conceptual model that depicts the indirect effect of the measured PSI on the relationship of SNS usage and the tendency to imitate idols was tested. 194 undergraduate students were recruited to complete the Celebrity-Persona Parasocial Interaction Scales, the modified Facebook Intensity Scale, and a set of five items that reflect on the inclination to imitate idols. Results revealed the significant indirect effect of the measured PSI, supporting that SNS intensity facilitate parasocial experience, which in turn, induce the tendency to impersonate idols. Findings supported one of the theorems of the uncertainty reduction theory, which posited the facilitative effect of perceived intimacy on similarity. Entrepreneurs' new ventures pursue different strategies in international markets; some are more committed to the foreign markets than others. Existing international management studies largely use entrepreneurs' conscious rationale, such as profitability, risks, resource limitations, country-specific knowledge, and personal values, to explain the commitment diversities. Drawing from achievement motivation theory and cognition theory, this study adds entrepreneurs' unconscious motives and differentiates between implicit and explicit achievement motivation as important forces driving the diversities of the commitment. Evidence collected in this study suggests that both conscious and unconscious achievement motives are related to the commitment but the relationships are moderated curvilinearly by overseas operation complexity and overseas competition intensity respectively. The droplet rolling angle is one of the important indicators to measure the coating's hydrophobic performance, but the specific factors affecting the droplet rolling angle on the micro-nanostructured superhydrophobic coating surface are not yet known. Based on the rolling mechanism of droplets on rough surfaces, and from the perspective of coating microscopic energy conservation, this paper points out that the micron-scale morphology and the nanoscale morphology can comprehensively affect the droplet rolling angle. From the above perspective, a mathematical model of the droplet rolling angle on the micro-nanostructure superhydrophobic coating surface was established. The model shows that the droplet rolling angle is positively correlated with the ratio of nano-sized pillar width to spacing, the ratio of micron-sized papilla radius to spacing, and the liquid–gas interfacial tension, and is negatively correlated to the droplet intrinsic contact angle, droplet volume and droplet density. The droplet rolling angle calculated by the presented model is in good agreement with the experimentally tested results. Dust particles suspended in the atmosphere have been a big headache for electric power transmission industry in China. As transmission lines pass through dusty or air-polluted areas, dust contaminants are likely to deposit and accumulate on line insulators, which is one of the greatest causes of flashover and failure of power transmission. To study the statistical characteristics of this type of contamination, dust samples were collected and measured, and a physical model was set up to explain the deposition and accumulation mechanism of the particles. The trajectories of particles were tracked using fluid mechanics and contact mechanics, and an adhesion criterion was proposed. Simulation software was then applied to validate the model; further different environmental factors were studied that would affect the particle size distribution. The results show that under natural contamination conditions, the particle size distribution on the surface of the insulator shows a certain concentration at size ranges 1~100 μm and basically obeys a log-normal distribution. In addition, relative humidity, air velocity, and the charge accumulated on the surface all have significant influences on particle size distribution characteristics, while the effect of the electric field is mainly reflected in the difference in the number concentration of particle adhesion. IB scholars have long studied the multinational enterprise (MNE) and now recognize that its ability to capture value stems from its control of bottleneck assets. In contrast, economic geographers and regional scientists have largely focused their attention on the locations within which economic and business systems operate. In this article, we draw on both these literatures. We emphasize that the MNE’s integration of upstream and downstream strategic considerations to maximize its control of bottleneck assets implies an optimal geographic footprint. This optimal footprint is typically asymmetric, with a spatial scale that varies dramatically across the different activities of the value chain. Upstream innovation processes are likely to be based on highly local considerations like the availability of specialized resources and collocation advantages. In contrast, downstream sales and marketing processes are likely to driven by imperatives of high volume and global reach. Further, in the current fast clockspeed business environment, the location and nature of bottleneck assets are likely to change rapidly and unpredictably, making organizational flexibility a crucial MNE capability. This study traces the early, rapid internationalization of small, young technology enterprises (SYTEs) to the interaction between industry dynamism and resource constraints. The evidence collected in this study shows that industry dynamism drives the speed of the internationalization and resource constraints inhibit it. Niche and strategic alliance strategies are found to mediate or moderate the relationships among resource constraints, industry dynamism and the speed. The costs of inter- and intra-regional diversification have been widely discussed in the existing international business literature, but the findings are mixed. Explanations for the mixed findings have important managerial implications, because business managers have to estimate accurately the costs of doing business within and across regions before they make their internationalization decisions. To explain the existing mixed findings, this study differentiates between liabilities of foreignness at the country and regional levels, and explores the joint effects of liability of country foreignness (LCF) and liability of regional foreignness (LRF) on the performance of internationalizing firms. Using data from 167 Canadian firms, we find that LCF may not necessarily be negatively correlated with intra-regional diversification, but LRF is positively correlated with inter-regional diversification. LCF moderates the relationship between LRF and inter-regional diversification, and also mediates the relationship between intra-regional diversification and firm performance. LRF mediates the relationship between inter-regional diversification and firm performance. Missing one or more of these variables may result in different cost estimates. Organic compounds such as chlorobenzene cannot be effectively decomposed with currently available biological and chemical treatment methods. Preliminary studies show that nano-scale zero-valent iron particles irradiated by microwave is effective in decomposing chemically refractive organic compounds such as chlorobenzene. In this study, microwave is applied to enhance chlorobenzene removal using micron-scale iron particles and nano-scale zero-valent iron particles suspended in the chlorobenzene solution as the dielectric media. The results show that better chlorobenzene removal can be achieved when the chlorobenzene solution is irradiated with 250 W microwave for 150 s than without microwave irradiation. The microwave radiation increases iron reaction rate and surface activity, thus enhancing the chlorobenzene removal. The microwave-induced iron particles cause the chlorobenzene activation energy to drop 34.0% for micron-scale iron and 16.1% for nano-scale zero-valent iron. They can remove 13.6 times more chlorobenzene for micro iron, and 3.6 times more chlorobenzene for nano iron. We have demonstrated that the microwave-induced nano-scale iron particles are effective in treating toxic organic substances as demonstrated in this laboratory study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gold nanoslit arrays have multiple resonances due to localized plasmons, Bloch wave surface plasmon polaritons, and Wood's anomaly. Different structures result in different resonances and affect the detection sensitivity of the nanoslits. We systematically compared different structure parameters such as period, slit widths, and gold film thickness by using a spectral integration method. The experimental results show the detection sensitivity had an optimal value for a 500-nm period and 130-nm-thick nanoslits. Moreover, the sensitivity increases with the decrease of the slit widths. It was improved about three times when the size was reduced from 230 to 56 nm. The optimized structure can achieve a detection limit of 5 × 10 refractive index unit when the stability is 0.2%. Combining multispectral images and the spectral integration method, we demonstrate real-time and multiple detections of antigen-antibody interactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zooplankton, sampled at five stations from the upper Sangga estuary (7 km upstream) in Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve (MMFR), Malaysia, to 16 km offshore, comprised more than 47% copepod. Copepod abundance was highest at nearshore waters (20,311 ind m), but decreased toward both upstream (15,572 ind m) and offshore waters (12,330 ind m). Copepod abundance was also higher during the wetter NE monsoon period as compared to the drier SW monsoon period, but vice versa for copepod species diversity. Redundancy analysis (RDA) shows that copepod community structure in the upper estuary, nearshore and offshore waters differed, being influenced by spatial and seasonal variations in environmental conditions. The copepods could generally be grouped into estuarine species (dominantly Acartia spinicauda Mori, Acartia sp1, Oithona aruensis Früchtl, and Oithona dissimilis Lindberg), stenohaline species ( Acartia erythraea Giesbrecht, Acrocalanus gibber Giesbrecht, Paracalanus aculateus Giesbrecht, and Corycaeus andrewsi Farran) and euryhaline species ( Parvocalanus crassirostris Dahl, Oithona simplex Farran, and Bestiolina similis (Sewell)). Shifts in copepod community structure due to monsoonal effects on water parameters occurred at the lower estuary. Copepod peak abundance in mangrove waters could be associated with the peak chlorophyll a concentration prior to it. Evidence of copepod consumption by many species of young fish and shrimp larvae in the MMFR estuary implies the considerable impact of phytoplankton and microphytobenthos on mangrove trophodynamics. backside-etched silicon chip with a polysilicon diaphragm flip-chip attached on a printed wiring board and globally bumped on a FR4 printed circuit board was investigated through a finite element analysis for determining three key parameters of flip-chip chip size packaging, namely, the size of solder bump, and the thickness of the printed wiring board with/without U8437-3 underfill. Four kinds of thermal-induced stresses and deformations in the diaphragm, solder bump, and printed wiring board were evaluated for the parametric study. As the simulation results show, the thermal-induced stresses in the diaphragm and solder bump can be reduced effectively if the printed wiring board is thinner. However, the printed wiring board is still required to be sufficiently thick to prevent warping. In addition, the underfill material also can reduce the induced stress occurring at the interface between the solder joint and the chip and improve reliability. Microwave (MW) is applied to enhance pentachlorophenol (PCP) removal using zerovalent iron (ZVI, Fe) or granular activated carbon (GAC) as the dielectric media. Applying MW energy at 700 W for 20 s, the results show that Fe is capable of enhancing the CB removing 2.7 times (91% vs. 34 %) than GAC. Because Fe has higher dielectric loss (39.5 F/m vs. 8.3 F/m), it absorbs more MW energy to speed up the oxidation rate resulting in a faster temperature rise than GAC. Thus, in the presence of MW, Fe is superior to GAC for PCP removal. Additionally, excessive MW exposure will damage the surface structure of either Fe or GAC causing excessive electric charges to accumulate in the media that brings about the phenomenon of sparks. This study compares large firms against small and medium-sized firms in technology industries and assesses the differences between them in the choices between partnership and self-reliance entry modes. A sample of 166 large, small, and medium-sized firms in technology industries was analyzed using LISREL 8.30. Results indicate that, given innovative advantage, large and small and medium-sized firms both prefer self-reliance entry modes. With violent market dynamism, large firms prefer self-reliance entry modes while small and medium-sized firms prefer partnership entry modes. When high promotional effort is required, small and medium-sized firms prefer partnership entry modes and large firms may prefer partnership entry modes as well. Our study investigated the feasibility of using a constructed wetland for restoring a creek that had been seriously polluted by organic discharges from animal husbandry activities in the watershed. A fish-ladder type cascade was used to raise the average dissolved oxygen (DO) from 1.0 to 3.6 mg/L. The ecological treatment system removed 64.0% of suspended solids (SS), 43.0% of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and 11.0% of ammonia nitrogen. Additionally, reductions of BOD and nitrogenous biochemical oxygen demand (NBOD) were simulated using a first-order biokinetic model for biodegradation of organic matter. The monitored data fell within ranges of the model-based BOD and NBOD reductions, although NBOD reduction was over predicted. Achieving the full potential of zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs) for genome engineering in human cells requires their efficient delivery to the relevant cell types. Here we exploited the infectivity of integrase-defective lentiviral vectors (IDLV) to express ZFNs and provide the template DNA for gene correction in different cell types. IDLV-mediated delivery supported high rates (13–39%) of editing at the IL-2 receptor common γ-chain gene (IL2RG) across different cell types. IDLVs also mediated site-specific gene addition by a process that required ZFN cleavage and homologous template DNA, thus establishing a platform that can target the insertion of transgenes into a predetermined genomic site. Using IDLV delivery and ZFNs targeting distinct loci, we observed high levels of gene addition (up to 50%) in a panel of human cell lines, as well as human embryonic stem cells (5%), allowing rapid, selection-free isolation of clonogenic cells with the desired genetic modification. Genome editing driven by zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs) yields high gene-modification efficiencies (>10%) by introducing a recombinogenic double-strand break into the targeted gene. The cleavage event is induced using two custom-designed ZFNs that heterodimerize upon binding DNA to form a catalytically active nuclease complex. Using the current ZFN architecture, however, cleavage-competent homodimers may also form that can limit safety or efficacy via off-target cleavage. Here we develop an improved ZFN architecture that eliminates this problem. Using structure-based design, we engineer two variant ZFNs that efficiently cleave DNA only when paired as a heterodimer. These ZFNs modify a native endogenous locus as efficiently as the parental architecture, but with a >40-fold reduction in homodimer function and much lower levels of genome-wide cleavage. Abstract Efficient clustering in dynamic spatial databases is currently an open problem with many potential applications. Most traditional spatial clustering algorithms are inadequate because they do not have an efficient support for incremental clustering.In this paper, we propose DClust , a novel clustering technique for dynamic spatial databases. DClust is able to provide multi-resolution view of the clusters, generate arbitrary shapes clusters in the presence of noise, generate clusters that are insensitive to ordering of input data and support incremental clustering efficiently. DClust utilizes the density criterion that captures arbitrary cluster shapes and sizes to select a number of representative points, and builds the Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) of these representative points, called R-MST. After the initial clustering, a summary of the cluster structure is built. This summary enables quick localization of the effect of data updates on the current set of clusters. Our experimental results show that DClust outperforms existing spatial clustering methods such as DBSCAN, C2P, DENCLUE, Incremental DBSCAN and BIRCH in terms of clustering time and accuracy of clusters found. Caching query results is one efficient approach to improving the performance of XML management systems. This entails the discovery of frequent XML queries issued by users. In this paper, we model user queries as a stream of XML query pattern trees and mine the frequent query patterns over the query stream. To facilitate the one-pass mining process, we devise a novel data structure called DTS to summarize the pattern trees seen so far. By grouping the incoming pattern trees into batches, we can dynamically mark the active portion of the current batch in DTS and limit the enumeration of candidate trees to only the currently active pattern trees. We also design another summary data structure called ECTree that provides for the incremental computation of the frequent tree patterns over the query stream. Based on the above two constructs, we present two mining algorithms called XQSMinerI and XQSMinerII. XQSMinerI is fast, but it tends to overestimate, while XQSMinerII adopts a filter-and-refine approach to minimize the amount of overestimation. A vision-based soccer robot system is proposed, in which vision will identify the position and heading angle of each robot, and the position of the ball. With these imaging data, values for the defense factor, the competition factor, and the angle factor, are obtained. Using the three factors as the input variables of the proposed action selection mechanism, which is expressed in terms of fuzzy rules, the action that each robot should take is then chosen from the five basic actions available for the robots. In this manner, each robot may intercept, shoot, block, sweep the ball, or just stand by. After determining the action of each robot, control commands generated by the host computer are sent to the robot directly through a wireless RS-232. Export channels into emerging markets differ markedly in channel intensity. This inductive study of 18 British manufacturers and their Chinese intermediaries led to propositions exploring the mechanism behind the marked differences. Findings from the study indicate that low channel intensity may restrict exporting manufacturers' market coverage and expose them to high risks of intermediary opportunism in emerging markets where channel environments are highly uncertain and legal frameworks are weak. However, low channel intensity policy can be an appropriate option when exporting manufacturers face the threats of gray marketing and fake products.

A fuzzy algorithm is proposed to navigate a mobile robot from a given initial configuration to a desired final configuration in an unknown environment filled with obstacles. The mobile robot is equipped with an electronic compass and two optical encoders for dead-reckoning, and two ultrasonic modules for self-localization and environment recognition. From the readings of sensors at every sampling instant, the proposed fuzzy algorithm will determine the priorities of thirteen possible heading directions. Then the robot is driven to an intermediate configuration along the heading direction that has the highest priority. The navigation procedure will be iterated until a collision-free path between the initial and the final configurations is found. The integration ofinf ormation systems is becoming increasingly important. A common requirement in distributed data-intensive applications, such as data warehousing and data mining, is that the various databases involved be joined in a process called schema integration. The entity-relationship (ER) model or a variant of the ER model is often used as the common data model. To aid the schema conforming, merging and restructuring phases of the integration process, various transformations have been defined to map between various equivalent ER representations. In this paper, we describe a different approach to integrate ER schemas. We focus on the resolution of structural conflicts, that is, when related real-world concepts are modeled using different constructs in different schemas. Unlike previous work, our approach proposes to resolve the structural conflict between an entity type in one schema and an attribute in another schema and show that the other structural conflicts are automatically resolved. This reduces the manual effort required in integration. We give a detailed algorithm to transform an attribute in one schema into an equivalent entity type in another schema without any loss of semantics, that is, our transformation is both information preserving and constraint preserving.
