Heat stress, resulting from elevated heat and absolute humidity associated with climate change, will increasingly occur in the tropics and parts of the mid-latitudes and could threaten the liveability and viability of many regions. Concomitant with predictions of increased heat stress in northern Australia, the Australian Government seeks to boost the population in northern Australia substantially. This paper assesses the heat stress-related wet-bulb temperatures the largest northern centres could experience under Representative Concentration Pathways 4.5 and 8.5 by 2080. This paper exploits the hygroscopic properties of wood and its passive response to fluctuation of relative humidity to develop a framework for programmable actuation in adaptive building façade design. This responsive shape shifting mechanism is specifically employed for the embedded actuation of dynamic shading configurations. Utilizing the hygroscopic properties of wood in adaptive shading devices embraces passive motion with a low-cost and low-tech approach, as a response to rapid climatic changes. Using physical experiments and image analysis, changes in the deflection and angle of curvature of wood samples in response to fluctuation in relative humidity were measured and tracked. A set of controlled hygroscopic parameters affecting the motion response of wood were deduced, including the fixation position, fixation type, and percentage and location of isolated areas of wood samples, thus achieving more control of response behavior and multiple shading percentages. A parametric script was developed using Grasshopper graphical algorithm editor and Ladybug environmental plugin to simulate shading configurations for the identified control parameters in the summer and winter solstices for an adaptive façade prototype. The hyper-arid climate of Ouargla area (Northern Sahara of Algeria) is important in the field of the paleoenvironmental reconstitution. This paper investigates the importance of palaeolake sediments as significant terrestrial archives for studying Quaternary climate changes. Through morphological and mainly micromorphological investigations of the studied sites (Sabkha of Ouargla and palaeolake of Mellala), we noted the fluctuation of climate between arid and more humid conditions during Quaternary. Some pedofeatures have recorded these environmental changes. The studied calcareous crusting has a lacustrine origin when precipitations were more important. The clay coatings around the quartz grains indicate an old origin and different geochemical conditions that led to their dissolution. Lenticular gypsum crystals were formed from groundwater saturated with Ca2+andions. Calcite pseudomorphs after lenticular gypsum crystals indicate changes in local climatic parameters. Gypsum crusts can be explained by formation under wet climatic conditions in a lagoonal environment. Black and gray layers indicate evolution of organic matter at a wetter period. This paper highlights an unknown palaeolake which can be useful for the comprehension of the ecological past of the Sahara. Collections care in temperate zones of the world, including Scotland, is generally well served by a system of heating control known as conservation heating or humidistat-controlled heating. This system adjusts temperature in a building in order to maintain relative humidity at desired levels. An alternative control method is through the use of dehumidification, although airtightness of the building influences the effectiveness of this. This paper assesses three sites where these methods of control have been used: the Great Hall at Edinburgh Castle, Abbots House at Arbroath Abbey in eastern Scotland and Skelmorlie Aisle in western Scotland. The Thornthwaite Moisture Index (TMI) is a climate classification used in biophysical and biological studies. A TMI mapping of Victoria/Australia over the century indicated its applicability to assess climate change induced patterns of moisture variability. This paper progresses upon this, developing analytical procedures to assess the quality of the climate data used as input, and to select suitable spatial resolution for the output map. It is argued here that these are interrelated issues, and that the selection of a certain data quality level or a spatial resolution for TMI mapping needs to consider a trade-off between precision and scale. Results indicated that different trade-off options affect the climate classification and, therefore, a proposed framework can be used for non-arbitrary decisions on TMI mapping. In the context of the predicted global warming, we investigated whether the feeding activity and the behaviour of three Oniscidean species (Porcellionides pruinosus, Porcellio laevis and Armadillidium tunisiense) would be affected by the relative humidity (RH) decrease. A decreasing gradient of relative humidity (90%, 70% and 50%) was used to study the impact of predicted climate change on the survival rate, litter consumption rate, growth efficiency, faeces production, localization and stress behaviour within woodlice. After 3 weeks of exposure, we found that all species were variously affected by the RH decrease. The species A. tunisiense showed to be the least affected by the increased dry conditions. In driest conditions, woodlice spend less time at foraging inducing a low rate of litter consumption and faeces production. Impact models investigating climate change effects on food safety often need detailed climate data. The aim of this study was to select climate change projection data for selected crop phenology and mycotoxin impact models. Using the ENSEMBLES database of climate model output, this study illustrates how the projected climate change signal of important variables as temperature, precipitation and relative humidity depends on the choice of the climate model. Using climate change projections from at least two different climate models is recommended to account for model uncertainty. To make the climate projections suitable for impact analysis at the local scale a weather generator approach was adopted. As the weather generator did not treat all the necessary variables, an ad-hoc statistical method was developed to synthesise realistic values of missing variables. Surface temperatures increased rapidly in the last 100 years by 1 K (Kelvin), and could increase by a further 1.4 K in just 35 years, challenging building designers to provide comfort while minimizing carbon emissions. Ways to do this are with more effective indoor ventilation and lighter clothing for high temperatures and humidity, but some thermal simulation and rating systems do not consider these aspects. This paper reports on a novel simulation case study that estimated the heating and cooling energy used in a home in a Warm Temperate climate under a changing climate with a case-study method that used (1) CSIRO’s Climate Futures online tool; (2) the Australian Nationwide House Energy Ratings Scheme (NatHERS) AccuRate simulation and ratings tool; (3) a special CSIRO humidity research engine and (4) alternative Standard Effective Temperature (SET*) comfort approaches. The results showed that (A) one SET* approach with air movement, changed clothing and occupant acclimatization saved over 95% of the NatHERS residential heating and cooling energy, and should be included in NatHERS; and (B) residential retrofits or occupant education is needed for warming temperatures. Efficient air-conditioning systems facilitate climate control in modern museums, libraries, and archives. The climate in Hong Kong is typically hot and humid, so the survival of collections is highly dependent on 24-hour air-conditioning systems to maintain the desired environment in repositories of archives and books, or artefact stores. The continuous operation of such systems in turn relies on a number of factors, such as uninterrupted electricity supply, an active maintenance programme, daily monitoring of their performance and quick response to irregularities as well as backup or alternative systems to support the air-conditioning load in case they are down for servicing. From the risk management point of view, unlike the latter four factors, electricity supply is an external factor that cannot be guaranteed. Fluctuation in the power level that results in stoppage of air-conditioning equipment is not uncommon even in well-developed countries. Long power outages could be catastrophic as they might lead to irreversible damage to collection items as a result of fast, large, changes in temperature and relative humidity (RH) towards the external environment if the air-tightness or hygrothermal stability of the storage are not good enough. Understanding storage environmental stability, especially during electrical power disruptions, is an essential part of the preservation measures and disaster preparedness necessary to protect valuable collections in cultural heritage institutions in the region. Wood as a hygroscopic material interacts with the ambient climate variations of relative humidity and temperature. Due to constrained volumetric strains, i.e. swelling and shrinkage, changes in moisture content impose moisture induced stresses (MIS) which, if exceeding the tensile stress of the material, can cause fractures such as cracks or delamination. A monitoring campaign was initiated to measure the variations of the climate and moisture content in existing timber bridges and newly erected structure. Additionally, experimental test series under laboratory conditions were performed. Finally, the moisture induced mechanical response was simulated using a coupled moisture diffusion and mechanical model. The measuring results support the choice of the known service classes depending on the user service resp. building type. On the other hand, a possible differentiation of the service class over the cross section is discussed according to measuring results and practical applications. Ozone is a significant causative agent of mortality in cities. Urban environments are expressly vulnerable to global warming because of the extensive emission of air pollutants with urban heat island effect enhancing much rapidly the ozone concentration than in the less urbanized regions. This effect previously was not studied in local scale. It was hypothesized that climate change will cause heterogenic increase of ozone concentration in the different parts of the cities. To study this effect, the near-surface ozone concentration of 10 points of a Hungarian city was measured and modeled. At first step, the local correlations between solar radiation, air temperature, relative humidity and the near surface ozone concentrations at 3 m height were determined, specifying the local ozone-producing conditions. Then, based on the scenario of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 5th assessment report, the future seasonal near-surface ozone concentrations were modeled. Field studies of dry deposition usually measure dust accumulation over periods of days or weeks. However, long measurement periods obscure the effects of meteorological conditions on the deposition rate. Previously we developed an “outdoor soiling microscope” (OSM) in order to measure dust deposition and detachment every 10 min in the field. In this study a greased/ungreased pair of OSMs was deployed for 51 days in the desert climate of Doha, Qatar. Stepwise regression analysis was performed to quantify the explanatory power of meteorological parameters on dust deposition and detachment rates. It was found that wind speed dominated deposition and rebound of dust particles, and produced a distinctive “threshold” response in deposition. The dry deposition results were highly consistent with a model by Kim et al. (2000) derived from outdoor experiments. The impact of relative humidity (RH) and temperature variation on the mechanical behaviour of paintings on canvas was investigated, based on the various environmental recommendations that are applied by museums and institutions worldwide. Paint samples were constructed based on the works of twentieth-century artists such as Soulages and Riopelle. The various samples are based on criteria such as paint media, additives, pigment type, canvas type, thickness, type of application, and drying time. Once they are fully dry, paint films behave as elastic, viscoelastic, or viscoplastic materials depending on the chemical nature of their components. These properties, as well as tensile strength, were determined by a series of tensile tests. Other samples were included, originating from discarded oil paintings on canvas from the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. To carry out mechanical tests under controlled conditions of temperature and RH, a climatic chamber was built around the column of a universal testing machine. Samples were submitted to stress relaxation tests to observe their response to changes in environmental conditions. RH was increased from 20 to 90% and temperature from 15 to 60°C. Reactivity diagrams were drawn based on the results. The endurance limit under mechanical fatigue was determined from the diagrams and helped define the risks associated with each painting type when exposed to the accepted environmental recommendations. This study is an attempt to determine the trends in monthly, annual and monsoon total precipitation series over India by applying linear regression, the Mann-Kendall (MK) test and discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The linear regression test was applied on five consecutive classical 30-year climate periods and a long-term precipitation series (1851–2006) to detect changes. The sequential Mann-Kendall (SQMK) test was applied to identify the temporal variation in trend. Wavelet transform is a relatively new tool for trend analysis in hydrology. Comparison studies were carried out between decomposed series by DWT and original series. Furthermore, visualization of extreme and contributing events was carried out using the wavelet spectrum at different threshold values. The results showed that there are significant positive trends for annual and monsoon precipitation series in North Mountainous India (zone NMI) and North East India (NEI), whereas negative trends were detected when considering India as whole. The Clearness Index and the ratio between diffuse and global irradiance for different time scales are used to define a taxonomy for sky conditions and to study patterns to provide information for production-oriented probabilistic risk analysis studies for utility-level PV arrays. The study is focused on the definition of probabilities and distribution functions for the defined taxonomy of sky conditions. Correlations of the Clearness Index are investigated with different meteorological variables, to finally highlight that the only important correlation besides the irradiance is given by the relative humidity, though with a negative pattern. In conclusion, the analysis has shown that the three constraints of the standard test conditions (1000 W/m2, 25 °C, air mass of 1.5 global) normally applied for laboratory characterisation of PV modules are actually never simultaneously met outdoor. Accurate spatial interpolation (SI) of climate data is vital for the management and supervision of natural resources and agriculture. Owing to the lack of an adequate number of meteorological stations, meteorological-station-data-based SI methods may not always reflect the real climatic conditions of an interpolated point. Land surface temperature (LST) data obtained from satellite sensors enable the characterization of meteorological conditions of areas without meteorological stations. The aim of this article is to present a new modified inverse distance weighting (M-IDW) SI method for air temperature (Ta), total precipitation (Pt), and relative humidity (RH) by integrating Landsat LST data with meteorological station data for the interpolation process. The M-IDW approach is based on the correlation relationship between the climate data and LST at each meteorological station, which is incorporated into the traditional IDW to improve the estimation of the climate data at an interpolation location of interest. The proposed method, M-IDW, is applied for the interpolation of long years’ (i.e. long term) monthly average (LYMA)Ta,Pt, and RH climate data from meteorological stations in the Eastern Thrace region, which is 23,764 km2, located in southeast Europe. The LYMA of theTa,Pt, and RH has been constructed using data obtained from 27 meteorological stations that had functioned at least 10 years between 2000 and 2012 and from the corresponding satellite data. The outputs of the interpolation are in the form of LYMA, so are the analysed climate data. The spatial resolution of the predicted surface was taken as 30 m, similar to the original data presented by United States Geological Survey. The results were compared with those of the standard IDW, ordinary kriging (OK), and ordinary cokriging (OCK) methods to analyse the performance and accuracy of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed M-IDW method has the potential for SI of climate data, if enough number of images and cloudless pixels are incorporated in the LYMA LST computation. The proposed method, in general, yields better results than standard IDW and OK methods, especially during spring, summer, and partially in autumn for the interpolation ofTa(with 0.72°C, 0.53°C, and 0.66°C root mean square error (RMSE) values, respectively) andPt(with 11.07 mm, 7.64 mm, and 4.85 mm RMSE values, respectively). OCK and M-IDW results were comparable in spring, summer, and autumn where M-IDW was slightly better forTain autumn and spring and was slightly better forPtin summer. For the RH interpolation, although M-IDW results were found to be close to the results of IDW, OK, and OCK in spring, summer, and autumn, for the overall seasonal interpretation, the RMSE values of M-IDW were worse than the others. A relationship between forest vegetation patterns and climate has been proposed for Caribbean mountains, but mesoscale temperature, precipitation (PPT), humidity, and cloud formation patterns are poorly documented. Half-hourly temperature and humidity observations were obtained from 2001 to 2011 from a network of 10 data-logging instruments ranging in elevation from 1500 to 2800 m on the windward slopes of the Cordillera Central, Dominican Republic. We report diurnal, seasonal, and annual patterns in temperature, PPT, humidity, and the trade wind inversion (TWI) along the elevation gradient. The elevational gradient in mean air temperature was non-linear during the dry season, with lapse rates decreasing to -0.5 °C km-1 between 1500 and 1900 m and -0.8 °C km-1 between 2100 and 2400 m. Relative humidity reached a maximum at 2100 m (mean of 91%), but remains above 85% over the entire gradient until 2600 m, above which it drops steeply. Relative humidity also showed marked seasonality but only at the highest elevations, dropping markedly above 2400 m and especially above 2600 m in the dry season, while remaining high at lower elevations throughout the year. PPT declined only slightly with elevation on windward slopes, but was markedly lower in leeward areas. Dry season PPT was lower on windward and leeward slopes at all elevations, except at ∼2400 m on windward slopes where it remained nearly as high as the rest of the year. Sub-zero temperatures occurred at elevations ≥2325 m and increased markedly in frequency ≥2600 m. These observations support the hypothesis that the discrete vegetation ecotone between the cloud forest and subalpine pine forest at ∼2200 m on windward slopes results from climatic discontinuities, especially during the dry season. In particular, the TWI effect on mesoclimatic patterns (especially moisture) regulates the elevational maximum of cloud forest flora and likely will represent a strong barrier to the future migration of cloud forest flora to higher elevations in response to warmer temperatures. Together with increased moisture stress due to higher temperatures, climate change in the high elevations of tropical mountains is therefore likely to disrupt the dynamics and distributions of tropical montane forests. The on-site monitoring of acoustic emission (AE) has allowed the direct tracing of climate-induced crack propagation in an eighteenth-century wardrobe displayed in the Gallery of Decorative Art in the National Museum in Krakow, Poland. The anti-correlation measuring scheme and frequency filtering allowed very low levels of physical damage to the wardrobe to be detected in spite of the high background noise typical of the museum environment. The total AE energy recorded during two years of monitoring corresponded to a fractured area of 12 mm2 or a total crack propagation of 1.2 mm for two10-mm-thick panels. Although the total damage recorded was minute, correlation between the events of fracturing and falls in indoor relative humidity (RH) in winter due to insufficient humidification was evident. The risk of damage, expressed in terms of crack propagation, was quantified as a function of the magnitude of the RH falls of the duration compatible with the response time of the object. The data allow acceptable RH falls to be identified if a conservation professional or a curator selects a 'tolerable' yearly propagation of the fracture, in other words the progress of damage considered insignificant. The climate of the United States Northern Great Plains region is highly variable. Modelling of agriculture in this region and similar locations depends on the availability and quality of satellite and ground data for agro-climate variables. We evaluated tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) multi-satellite preparation analysis (TMPA) precipitation, atmospheric infrared sounder (AIRS) surface air temperature, and AIRS relative air humidity (RH). A significant bias was found within the temperature and RH products and no bias but an insufficient rain event detection skill in the precipitation product (probability of detection ∼0.3). A linear correction of the temperature product removed the bias as well as lowered the root mean square deviation (RMSD). The bias-corrections for RH led to increased RMSD or worse correlation. For precipitation, the correlation between the satellite product and ground data improved if cumulative precipitation or only precipitation during the growing season was used. The authors extracted from the PubMed and ScienceDirect bibliographic databases all articles published between 1998 and 2009 that were relevant to climate change and food- and waterborne diseases. Any material within each article that provided information about a relevant pathogen and its relationship with climate and climate change was summarized as a key fact, entered into a relational knowledge base, and tagged with the terminology (predefined terms) used in the field. These terms were organized, quantified, and mapped according to predefined hierarchical categories. For noncholera Vibrio sp. and Cryptosporidium sp., data on climatic and environmental influences (52% and 49% of the total number of key facts, respectively) pertained to specific weather phenomena (as opposed to climate change phenomena) and environmental determinants, whereas information on the potential effects of food-related determinants that might be related to climate or climate change were virtually absent. This proportion was lower for the other pathogens studied (Campylobacter sp. 40%, Salmonella sp. 27%, Norovirus 25%, Listeria sp. 8%), but they all displayed a distinct concentration of information on general food- and water-related determinants or effects, albeit with little detail. Almost no information was available concerning the potential effects of changes in climatic variables on the pathogens evaluated, such as changes in air or water temperature, precipitation, humidity, UV radiation, wind, cloud coverage, sunshine hours, or seasonality. Frequency profiles revealed an abundance of data on weather and food-specific determinants, but also exposed extensive data deficiencies, particularly with regard to the potential effects of climate change on the pathogens evaluated. A reprioritization of public health research is warranted to ensure that funding is dedicated to explicitly studying the effects of changes in climate variables on food- and waterborne diseases. Background: It is widely accepted that assessing the impact of heat on populations is an important aspect of climate change research. However, this raises questions about how best to measure people's exposure to heat under everyday living conditions in more detail than is possible by relying on nearby sources of meteorological data. Objective: This study aimed to investigate practical and viable approaches to measuring air temperature and humidity within a population, making comparisons with contemporaneous external data sources. This was done in a rural South African population during the subtropical summer season. Results: Air temperature and humidity were measured indoors and outdoors at three locations over 10 days and the datalogger technology proved reliable and easy to use. There was little variation in measurements over distances of 10 km. Conclusions: Small battery-powered automatic dataloggers proved to be a feasible option for collecting weather data among a rural South African population. These data were consistent with external sources but offered more local detail. Detailed local contemporary data may also allow post hoc modelling of previously unmeasured local weather data in conjunction with global gridded climate models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An objective approach to regionalizing climatic characteristics affecting wildfire ignition potential is useful in fire control strategies. Temperature and humidity observations statistically predict equilibrium moisture content characteristics providing a first approximation to the moisture content of dead, fine fuels. Principal component and cluster analysis grouped fuel moisture attributes for seven locations on a mountain ridge spanning nearly 1000 m in elevation difference on two aspects and within a maximum separation distance of 5 km.
