L'homme qui plantait des arbres , la nouvelle que Jean Giono a publiée en 1952, raconte l'histoire d'un berger solitaire qui consacre des décennies à planter inlassablement des arbres dans le sud de la France et à restaurer la vie, l'eau, la végétation et le bonheur dans une région autrefois ravagée. Des indices dissimulés dans l'histoire, moins évi-dents, relèvent les causes de la désolation et de la déforestation de la région aux mains de charbonniers désespérés. Même si Giono a rédigé sa nouvelle en 1952, avant que le terme « changement climatique » soit inventé, il était en parfaite harmonie avec le monde naturel et s'inquiétait des effets destructeurs attribuables à l'exploitation irresponsable de l'environnement par la population humaine. Cette histoire remarquablement visionnaire rappelle le XXIe siècle actuel avec ses sécheresses, ses incendies et ses inondations, qui font les manchettes au quotidien. Frédéric Back, environnementaliste et planteur d'arbres dévoué, a consacré six ans de sa vie à adapter l'histoire de Giono pour l'écran. La transposition de cette nouvelle à l'écran est l'objectif analytique du présent article. Sa représentation des causes et des effets des changements climatiques et de la désolation qui en découle est particulièrement intéressante. L'animation de Back est plutôt inquiétante, mais il s'arrête brusquement et propose une solution pour imaginer un monde meilleur, plus sain, une vision qui repose sur l'idée que les humains prennent soin du monde naturel et coupent court aux pratiques qui mettent la vie sur Terre en péril pour en faire des agents positifs des changements climatiques. Ainsi, dans le film, la représentation des changements climatiques n'évolue pas irrévocablement vers une catastrophe comme le font la plupart des films de fiction climatique. L'histoire de Giono en est une de rédemption, démontrée par le passage de Back d'une palette monochromatique au début du film à des scènes qui rappellent les jardins de Monet à la fin, foisonnants de couleurs, de vie et de joie. Pour comprendre le film, l'auteur aborde le militantisme environnemental tant de Giono que de Back et examine les films antérieurs de Back. Jean Giono's 1952 novella, "L'Homme qui plantait des arbres," tells the story of a solitary shepherd who spends decades tirelessly planting trees in southern France, restoring life, water, vegetation, and happiness to a once desolate region. Less obvious are clues embedded in the story that point to the cause of the region's desolation, deforestation at the hands of desperate charcoal makers. Although Giono wrote the story in 1952, before the term "climate change" was coined, he was profoundly attuned to the natural world and concerned about the destructive effects of reckless human exploitation of the environment. This strikingly prescient tale recalls our own twenty-first-century world with drought, fires, and flooding in the headlines every day. Fredéric Back, a dedicated environmentalist and planter of trees, spent six years adapting Giono's tale for the screen. How Back translated Giono's tale to the screen is the focus of this paper. Of particular interest will be his depiction of the causes and effects of climate change and the misery engendered by it. Backs' animation leaves us a bit haunted, but he stops short, throwing us a life vest and allowing us to imagine a better, healthier world, a vision predicated on humans taking care of the natural world and halting practices that imperil life on earth, making them positive agents for climate change. In this way, the film's depiction of climate change does not move irrevocably towards calamity as most cli-fi films do; Giono's story is one of redemption, signaled by Back's shift from a monochromatic palette early in the film to scenes at the end that recall Monet's gardens, teeming with color, life, and joy. Key to understanding the film will be discussion of both Giono and Back's environmental activism, as well as consideration of Back's earlier films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change and global warming have led to an increased incidence of flooding across the world. Against the backdrop of the recent devastating floods in the Kwazulu-Natal province of South Africa, this paper explores psychotraumatology of natural disasters. In particular, we explore the impact of internal migration in South Africa, as well as apartheid spatial planning and inequality on the consequences of the flooding. We also focus on the psychotraumatology resulting from flooding, in general, and in particular on the victims of the flooding in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. We conclude that the psychopathological consequences of such natural disasters are ignored even though they seriously affect the people concerned. Many geographers have recently shifted their attention to critical explorations of the politics enabled by emerging forms of digital technologies. Unfortunately, analyses of how indigenous peoples are engaging these technologies have been largely absent from the new research agenda. This paper argues that digital politics offer both opportunities for empowerment and dangers of assimilation for indigenous peoples. The contradictory potential for engaging with the internet is therefore not dissimilar from the outcomes of indigenous engagements with other Western tools and institutions. The paper builds this argument through a critical discourse analysis of Inuit and non-Inuit discussions of polar bear management in the Canadian Arctic across five different websites. Based on this analysis the paper argues that more research is needed on indigenous engagements with the web, to better understand how indigenous peoples are developing digital tactics to take advantage of the benefits, and minimize the dangers, of its political potential. As Canada's climate warms at double the rate of the rest of the world, Canadian libraries have an important responsibility towards guardianship and activism on the climate crisis. Libraries have long been assessed on their sustainability efforts by inward facing factors, such as building standards and collections. While these remain important, this paper proposes a taxonomy that develops assessment further outward in the direction of community activism and climate justice, and tests that taxonomy against the environmental sustainability indicators published by Ontario public libraries. Issues raised by the papers in the Building Research & Information special issue titled 'Climate Change: National Building Stocks' (2007) include the need for an explicitly engineering vision of low-energy and low-carbon futures, the need to develop detailed, dynamic models of the interactions between building stocks and energy supply systems, the importance of data in supporting both the development and the implementation of roadmaps to low-carbon futures, the likely role of micro-generation in low-carbon futures, and the phenomenon of rebound and its implications for energy-efficiency technologies. There appears to be consensus on all but the last two. This paper proposes three alternatives to Saunders' formulation of the Khazzoom-Brookes postulate, based on the view that rebound is only likely to be a problem if energy-efficiency improvements are implemented in the absence of a carbon cap. The paper ends by reviewing the interactions between regulatory and economic environment, culture and technology, and their potential impacts on energy use and carbon emissions. It is now obvious that technology and society co-evolve. This should lead to increasing collaboration between social scientists and engineers in fields such as buildings. Yet engineering insights still have hegemony over building practices and the setting of standards. This paper considers how the insights from the recent Building Research & Information 2008 special issue titled 'Comfort in a Lower Carbon Society' might be applied in the building sector and in associated policy-making processes. It concludes that economics, the dominant discipline in the policy world, tells us that there is a huge prize to be gained in terms of reducing carbon emissions in the built environment, but that it does not provide many clues about the practical steps needed to secure the prize. Social science insights could be critical here. Specifically, it is argued that social science can increase one's understanding of the ways in which needs and demand for comfort are created. It can help design regulatory processes that build in visions of a lower carbon society from the start. It also provides the insight that high-level policy-makers must send coherent signals to regulators and practitioners to avoid the low carbon building agenda coming into conflict with other policy goals. This paper examines efforts taking place in London, San Francisco and Stockholm to implement deep greenhouse gas emission cuts--'deep decarbonization'--through the transformation of buildings and urban energy infrastructure for increased energy efficiency and low/zero carbon energy supply. Drawing on interviews, policy document analysis, and site tours to buildings and energy infrastructure, this paper analyzes how deep decarbonization is being embedded into urban buildings, energy systems, and institutions. It argues that practitioners are finding ways to create new low/zero carbon future buildings, but are having difficulty correcting the historical development path through retrofitting. This paper examines solutions and challenges brought to light by urban decarbonization in practice targeting existing buildings from which other cities can learn. Four key lessons for low/zero carbon retrofits are highlighted: 1) shift primary targets from homeowners to owners of multiple buildings, 2) expand the suite of resources available to support zero carbon retrofits, 3) experiment and teach using public investment, and 4) institutionalize energy and carbon reporting linked to municipal department targets. Given the necessity of low-carbon, efficient, and climateresilient building retrofits to address the climate crisis, action can be scaled up by considering buildings and energy infrastructure an infrastructure priority for public investment.
