This paper focuses on the combustion mechanism of furan-based fuels synthesized from lignocellulose. The fuel is a binary alternative fuel consisting of 2-methylfuran and 2,5-dimethylfuran derived from furfural. The key reactions affecting the combustion mechanism of this fuel were identified via path analysis, and the initial reaction kinetic mechanism was constructed using a decoupling methodology. Then, a genetic algorithm was used to optimize the initial mechanism. The final skeleton mechanism consisted of 67 species and 228 reactions. By comparing experimental data on ignition delay, component concentration, and laminar flame velocity under a wide range of conditions over various fundamental reactors, it was shown that the mechanism has the ability to predict the combustion process of this fuel well. With the increasing concern about the environment, renewable energy development is imminent, and biomass utilization is an essential part of it. In many regions (e.g., Southeast Asia), palm kernels are a very economical feedstock for biomass energy production. However, the collection and transportation of palm kernels are complicated, which is not conducive to the further development of this industry. This paper analyzes the current situation of collection and transportation of palm kernels in Southeast Asian countries using basic analysis methods. Meanwhile, the characteristics of palm fruit bunches as biomass fuel and its transportation and handling methods are briefly introduced and analyzed concerning the fuel demand of biomass power generation projects. The shortcomings of the current methods were identified, and relevant directions for improvement were proposed. It is hoped that it can improve the transportation efficiency of palm fruit bunches as a feedstock for biomass power generation and provide a reference basis for the collection and transportation of palm fruit bunches biomass. This paper investigates the ability of insulation cellulose fiber powder (CFP) to be pelletized for its valorization as biomass fuel. CFP is a waste originating from insulation cellulose manufacturing that lacks any method of valorization because of its boron salts content. A sugar byproduct and lignosulfonate (LS) were considered as binders for the pellet manufacturing process. Physical tests were carried out to characterize the pellets' performance. Chemical and combustion tests were considered to state the pellets' potential as a green energy source. Raw CFP showed good ability in its pelletization and durability in the range of 15–30% of moisture content. The pellet's density decreased as water content increased. Binders increased the pellet's length before and after the durability test. Binders also increased the CFP pellet's water absorption, demonstrating a potential decrease in durability against environmental factors. Binders also decreased the lower heating value. Ultimate analysis showed a slight Nitrogen increase in both binder combinations that could potentially raise the pollutant NOx combustion emissions. All the combinations showed adequate combustion characteristics, but binders increased ash production. Additives decreased the CFP volatile matter content and increased the fixed carbon, which could facilitate a more stable combustion. DTA curves showed a mass loss rate decrease in the volatile stage for the binder combinations, which also could be considered as an indicator of a more stable combustion. The ashes' chemical compositions when analyzed by XPS showed boron contents oscillating between 10.03% and 16.42%, demonstrating the possibility of recovering them from the combustion ashes. Consumption of energy is a determinant of the socioeconomic status of many citizens across the globe. The majority of rural households in India are dependent on biomass fuels. Existing data on the factors affecting fuel switching in rural India are insufficient to analyze a behavioral change among families. This paper evaluates the influence of four variables income, education, cost of fuel, and clean fuel supply on fuel adoption decisions. To understand the study population's behavioral change, a Household Survey is conducted in 20 villages (in India's rural district). Along with field observation, data are also collected on energy usage at the household level using a formal questionnaire. Binary logistic regression is applied to establish a link between the variables. Both biomass fuels and Liquefied Petroleum Gas are used mostly for cooking. The prevalence of energy stacking behavior is observed even among middle and upper‐income families. Modest evidence for the "energy ladder" hypothesis is seen, however, a "switch over" to cleaner fuels is not. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the Ethiopian energy demand urges for fuel options, it is essential to identify biomass fuels and estimate their energy potential. This study quantified the agricultural residues' biomass resources and their energy potential. Further analyzed and characterized the potential nature through quantitative and qualitative methodologies with descriptive, comparative, explanatory, and exploratory studies. Five-year crop yield data of 27 crops were collected from the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia. Conversion factors into energy were surveyed from the literature. Subsequently, the residues available and their energy potentials were estimated. Mathematical and statistical analysis methods were considered in an Excel sheet. A new measure of natural potential capacity for energy was defined in two views (resource and application). Accordingly, their potential capacities were rated and prioritized comparatively. The gross energy potential of all the residues was estimated to be 494.7 PJ. With 30% collecting efficiency, it corresponds to the imported petroleum fuel in 2018. Five major crops contributed to 80% of this gross potential. Maize and sorghum presented the highest potential due to their superior yields and good natural potential capacities. They are also well distributed in all the regions. Cotton and maize's natural potential capacities are the best in both views. Generally, commercial crops presented better capacities than the major cereal crops. However, major crops' energy potentials dominated due to their yields. These resources need mobilization into modern and commercially accessible fuel forms that await intervention. Recently, the significance of anthracosis in the tracheobronchial tree, lung parenchyma, and even non-respiratory organs has been postulated and discussed in association with other diseases, especially tuberculosis. We reviewed the current literature by using the following key words in Medline/PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar databases: anthracosis, anthracofibrosis, anthracotic bronchitis, biomass fuels, and mixed-dust pneumoconiosis. The bibliographies of eligible papers were also reviewed for further relevant articles. A total of 37 studies were assessed. The content of these studies was then divided into specific categories. Considering the pathogenesis, along with histopathological, radiological, and bronchoscopic results regarding anthracotic lesions, we suggest these findings be defined as "ANTHRACOSIS SYNDROME". For the first time, we describe a syndrome involving black pigmentation, which was previously thought to involve only the tracheobronchial tree. Innovative emission reduction technologies combined with optimized processes can effectively reduce the environmental pressure in the iron and steel industry (ISI). Identifying and comparatively analyzing the carbon emissions (CE) from steel productions is conducive to achieving China's ambitious carbon reduction targets. In this paper, we investigated two innovative routes: the shaft furnace-induction furnace-basic oxygen furnace route (SF-IF-BOF) and shaft furnace-electric smelting furnace-basic oxygen furnace route (SF-ESF-BOF), alongside two traditional routes: the blast furnace-BOF route (BF-BOF) and SF-electric arc furnace route (SF-ESF). The analysis was based on a functional unit of 1000 kg of crude steel (CS). By establishing the mass and energy balance models and decision criteria, 12 typical smelting scenarios for these routes were analyzed and compared in terms of materials consumption and CE. The results showed that increasing the proportion of scrap was beneficial for reducing CE. Under the condition of a 50% scrap ratio, the CE of the SF-IF-BOF, SF-ESF-BOF, BF-BOF, and SF-EAF routes were 768, 823, 946, and 870 kg, respectively. The SF-IF-BOF route displayed the most significant advantage of CE reduction. In addition, by using 100% zero-carbon electricity substitution, the SF-EAF route exhibited the greatest CE reduction effect of 41% (from 870 to 510 kg/t). While deploying 100% biomass fuels to replace coal, the CE of the BF-BOF route reduced by 80%. Finally, after introducing biomass fuels and zero-carbon electricity, the CE of the SF-IF-BOF route was minimized to a significantly low 13 kg/t (from 768), nearing zero CE. The performance of two solid biomass wastes, date stone and jojoba solid waste, was experimentally examined for their potential application in combustion and propulsion systems. The fuels were tested in a hybrid rocket-like combustion environment, and the test result was analyzed with combustion and propulsion parameters. The performance of both fuels was comparatively evaluated and compared with a conventional hydrocarbon fuel in a hybrid rocket, with paraffin wax serving as a baseline. A compression device was introduced to compress the solid biomass wastes into a circular-shaped fuel grain compatible with a hybrid rocket combustion chamber with a hot surface ignitor. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and chemical equilibrium analysis (CEA) results revealed that the performance of the biomass fuel can be comparable to conventionally used hydrocarbon paraffin-wax-based propellant within a certain range of oxidizer-to-fuel ratio, in terms of theoretical specific impulse performance. Through experimental performance tests, it was found that the compressed biomass fuel grains were successfully ignited and produced thrust. Both biomass fuels tested in a hybrid rocket combustion chamber are expected to pave the way for further developments in biomass fuels in the waste-to-energy field for their application in combustion and propulsion systems, potentially replacing fossil fuels with renewable resources. Smoky cookfires contribute to global climate change and kill approximately four million people annually. While many studies have examined the effects of fuel-efficient cookstoves, this study does so while selling stoves at market prices. After introducing a fuel-efficient cookstove, fuelwood use and household air particu-lates declined by 12% and by smaller percentages after adjusting for observer-induced bias, or the Hawthorne effect. These reductions were less than laboratory predictions and fell well short of World Health Organization pollution targets. Even when introducing a second stove, most households continued to use their traditional stoves for most cooking. Future research should focus on improving the usability of fuel-efficient cookstoves and/or policies that assist consumers to shift to safer fuels like gas or electricity coupled with mechanisms to disable the existing smoky cookfire. Objectives: Burning of biomass fuel (cow-dung, crop residue, dried leaves, wood, etc.) in the kitchen releases smoke, which may impair the respiratory functions of women cooking there. This paper aimed to compare the respiratory symptoms between biomass fuel users and gas fuel users in Bangladesh. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews and chest examination of 224 adult women using biomass fuel in a rural village and 196 adult women using gas fuel in an urban area. Results: The prevalence of respiratory involvement (at least one among nine symptoms and two diseases) was significantly higher among biomass users than among gas users (29.9 vs. 11.2 %). After adjustment for potential confounders by a logistic model, the odds ratio (OR) of the biomass users for the respiratory involvement was significantly higher (OR = 3.23, 95 % confidence interval 1.30-8.01). The biomass fuel use elevated symptoms/diseases significantly; the adjusted OR was 3.04 for morning cough, 7.41 for nasal allergy, and 5.94 for chronic bronchitis. The mean peak expiratory flow rate of biomass users (253.83 l/min) was significantly lower than that of gas users (282.37 l/min). Conclusions: The study shows significant association between biomass fuel use and respiratory involvement among rural women in Bangladesh, although the potential confounding of urban/rural residency could not be ruled out in the analysis. The use of smoke-free stoves and adequate ventilation along with health education to the rural population to increase awareness about the health effects of indoor biomass fuel use might have roles to prevent these involvements. Various recently proposed biomass fuels are reviewed from the point of view of their safety. Many biomass materials are proposed for use as fuels, such as refuse derived fuel (RDF), wood chips, coal-wood mixtures, etc. However, these fuels have high energy potentials and can cause fires and explosions. We have experienced many such incidents. It is very difficult to extinguish fires in huge piles of biomass fuel or storage facilities. Here current studies on heat generation for these materials and proposed evaluation methods for these new developing materials in Japan are introduced, which are consistent with measurements using highly sensitive calorimeters such as C80, or TAM, and gas emission tests. The highly sensitive calorimeters can detect small heat generation between room temperature and 80 °C, due to fermentation or other causes. This heat generation sometimes initiates real fires, and also produces combustible gases which can explode if fuel is stored in silos or indoor storage facilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most of the air pollutants in the steel industry come from the sintering process, and the air pollutants produced by the sintering process mainly come from the sinter fuel (coke breeze). The S and N content of biomass fuel is low; therefore, biomass fuel is used instead of coke breeze for sintering to reduce the emission of the sinter flue gas pollutants. However, the use of biomass fuel reduces the sintering layer temperature, which results in the deterioration of the sinter properties. In order to ensure the quality of sintering base on biomass fuel, the thermodynamic calculation and related experiments were carried out, the effects of different basicity, MgO and Al2O3 content on the formation of low melting point minerals in sintered mixture were studied, and the suitable composition of sintered mixture was determined in this paper, so as to reduce the liquid phase formation temperature of sinter and increase in biomass fuel addition, which provided theoretical support for the application of biomass fuel in sintering. Experimental results indicate that the suitable conditions for the low-temperature sintering were a basicity of 2.0, and MgO and Al2O3 contents of 1.0% and 1.8%, respectively. Exposure to indoor air pollution (IAP) from the combustion of biomass fuels is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. In the work discussed in this paper we evaluated the endocrine activity of soot particles from biomass fuels by using yeast bioassay. These pollutants could have ß-galactosidase activity with a relative potency (RP) about 10-7-10-9 that of estradiol. Soot particles from wood and straw combustion only partially induced ß-galactosidase activity whereas others produced fully inductive activity in the yeast assay system. These pollutants did not have estrogen antagonist and progesterone agonist activity within the defined concentration range. However, these pollutants require 2-4 orders of magnitude higher IC50 to inhibit the activity of progesterone in a similar dose-response manner to mifepristone. We therefore propose that the endocrine activity of some environmental pollutants may be because of inhibition of the progesterone receptor (hPR). GC-MS results showed that substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds, substituted phenolic compounds and derivatives, aromatic carbonyl compounds, and phytosteroids in these soot particles may be mimicking endogenous hormones. Biomass wastes originating from palm oil milling activities can be characterized by their high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solid (TSS), and oil and grease content. The utilization of oil palm wastes such as palm oil mill effluent (POME) and empty fruit bunch (EFB) has great potential for a sustainable energy biomass pellet as it reduces the reliance on conventional materials for energy production. A mixture of POME and EFB in various ratios ranging between 7:3, 8:2, 9:1, and 10:0 was fermented in the presence of Lysinibacillus sp. LC 556247 for 120 h at 37 ± 2 °C and 180 rpm with the aim of elucidating the biodegradation of complex organic material in terms of BOD, COD, TSS, total organic carbon, inorganic carbon, and total carbon content. After fermentation, the mixtures were oven dried at 105 °C overnight and then subjected to calorific energy value (CEV) determination. The highest CEV of 20.26 MJ/kg was achieved for a ratio of 10:0 (slightly higher than the control experiment with the value of 18.67 MJ/kg), with maximum removal efficiencies of COD (12.19%), BOD (11.72%), TSS (93.94%), and oil reduction of 17.43%. Waste disposal is a controversial issue in many European countries: concerns about potential health effects and land value loss as well as the fulfillment of the European Landfill Directive and Waste Framework Directive have significantly changed the way waste should be managed. An appropriate management of municipal solid waste (MSW) may allow a significant enhancement of efficiency in resources use, by recovering both energy and materials from waste, otherwise landfilled, thus replacing fossil fuels and virgin materials with renewable sources. Separation and recovery of the biodegradable fraction of municipal solid waste is encouraged as a mean to produce bioenergy. Therefore, if not source segregated, innovative waste refining technologies may provide potential solutions for separation of organic fraction and improved energy and materials recovery. This paper presents a comprehensive system study of a recently developed technology aimed to improve the MSW management in order to decrease the demand for new landfill space and, at the same time, contribute to the urban energy needs. As part of a wider Life Plus Project entitled MARSS (Material Advanced Recovery Sustainable Systems), funded by European Community in 2012, the environmental assessment of an innovative and enhanced mechanical and biological treatment (MBT) demo plant installed in Mertesdorf (Germany) was performed by means of the SimaPro 8.0.5 LCA software, utilizing ReCiPe (H) Midpoint method for the impact assessment. The plant under study is designed to concentrate the biodegradable part of MSW in the <40 mm fraction, through a series of refining and recovery steps, to remove contaminants and obtain a suitable biomass fuel with a final marketable quality fulfilling the requirements for biomass power plants to generate urban decentralized production of heat and power (CHP). This study aims at understanding if and to what extent the MBT-MARSS plant is environmentally sound, by investigating environmental costs and benefits of replacing MSW landfilling and waste-to-energy disposal by means of boosted separation of biomass for energy generation in CHPs and other recoverable fractions (metals, plastic). Steps and/or components that can be further improved are also assessed. Sensitivity of impacts to assumptions regarding the source of replaced electricity was also tested. Results not only emphasize the novelty of a promising new technology, but also the extent of benefits that can be achieved depending on the actual power generation technique that is replaced by means of the energy recovered in the process. The quantitative evaluation of the MARSS technology shows that appropriate design and management of the MBT plant lead to substantial reduction of environmental impacts as well as material and energy resource savings, thus putting forward a technical solution suitable for those cities/countries where other solutions are still lacking or inappropriate or unfeasible. Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is a potential alternative sources of biomass fuel upon phycoremediation treatment using microorganisms. In this study, Coccomyxa dispar and Scenedesmus parvus, as acidophilic microalgae, were used to investigate growth and the production of biomass fuel from the cultivation of POME, as well the effectiveness of removing contaminants from POME. Individual cultivation was conducted at 26 ± 3 °C for 14 days under three growth modes (mixotrophic, heterotrophic, and autotrophic). To elucidate the potential phycoremediation properties, the characteristics of treated POME were compared, such as optical density (OD), cell dry weight (CDW), calorific energy values (CEV), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen (CHN) elemental analysis, including oil and grease content. S. parvus exhibits an outstanding growth profile for all growth modes compared to C. dispar, with measurements of 228.8, 37.08, and 118.2 mg/L observed at day 14 of cultivation. The highest CEV is 32.30 MJ/kg, which was obtained from S. parvus in the mixotrophic mode. Maximum removal efficiency for COD and BOD was 81% and 19% in the mixotrophic growth mode with S. parvus. These results pinpoint that S. parvus has the potential to be utilized for biomass fuel production with high CEV and effective POME phycoremediation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a new technical route of solar-biomass assisted thermophotovoltaic (TPV) system for power generation which uses renewable fuel and contributes to carbon neutrality. Here, a thermophysics model is established for solar-biomass assisted TPV based on energy-balance principle. The effects of some key parameters on the new system performance are investigated, including concentrate ratio, emitter area, biomass fuels, etc. Besides, biomass fuel saving after adding solar energy is investigated. The results show that the solar-biomass assisted TPV system can not only increase the output power of photovoltaic cells by more than 10 kW/m2 compared to biomass-driven TPV but also increase the electrical efficiency by nearly 10 percentage points. It is pointed out that improving the absorptance of solar absorber is the key for system optimization. Furthermore, the annual performance analysis shows that it also saves biomass fuel by up to 60% in one year. This study provides a reference for the design and application of renewable TPV technology.

Background: Worldwide, around 3 billion people rely on solid fuel for their daily energy needs. Household air pollution secondary to solid fuel burning is a major risk factor for respiratory mobility among vulnerable populations. This study aimed to investigate the respiratory symptoms associated with solid fuel usage, the level of kitchen fuel smoke exposure and its association with respiratory symptoms among reproductive-aged women in Sri Lanka, where most households exclusively use firewood as the primary cooking fuel.Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 403 reproductive-aged women (15 to 49 years) in the Central Province, Sri Lanka. A structured interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data, and an exposure assessment was done using a breath carbon monoxide monitor.Results: After adjusting for potential confounding factors by the logistic regression models, the odds ratios (OR) of the liquid petroleum gas-only users for at least one respiratory symptom relevant to cough (OR: 0.39; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.20-0.78), wheezing (OR: 0.47; 95% [CI]: 0.26-0.87), and dyspnea (OR: 0.44; 95% CI: 0.24-0.84) were significantly lower compared to firewood-only users. The mean of expired air carbon monoxide and estimated carboxyhemoglobin levels of liquid petroleum gas-only users (2.84 ± 2.85 ppm; 1.08 ± 0.46%) were significantly lower than those of firewood-only users (5.27 ± 4.64 ppm; 1.47 ± 0.74%).Conclusions: The use of firewood increased the risk of respiratory symptoms among reproductive-aged women in Sri Lanka. Health education focused on positive behavioral changes and effective and efficient clean energy policies are recommended to mitigate the risk associated with solid fuel smoke exposure. Smoke from inefficient biomass cookstoves contributes to global climate change and kills approximately four million people per year. Credits for reduced carbon emissions can potentially subsidize fuel-efficient cookstoves that reduce these harmful effects. Understanding the accuracy of different methods of monitoring stove usage is useful to measure the effects of cookstove programs and to target carbon credits. This paper compares four methods of measuring stove usage: hours cooked (derived from a predictive logistic regression of stove usage monitors and observations of stoves in use); number of people cooked for reported in household food diaries; fuel weight used gathered in a kitchen performance test; and household air pollution using mean 24-hour concentrations of particulate matter collected with particulate air monitors. We find statistically significant positive correlations between five out of six of these pairs of measures. While the correlations are positive, the explanatory power of each measure for another is weak. The weak correlations emphasize the importance of using multiple measures to track changes in stove use for both researchers and carbon auditors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the safe operation and stability of non-premixed combustion, it can widely be utilized in different engineering power and medical systems. The current paper suggests a mathematical asymptotic technique to describe non-premixed laminar flow flames formed in organic particles in a counter-flow configuration. In this investigation, fuel and oxidizer enter the combustor from opposite sides separately and multiple zones including preheating, vaporization, flame and post-flame zones were considered. Micro-sized lycopodium particles and air were respectively applied as a biofuel and an oxidizer. Dimensionalized and non-dimensionalized mass and energy conservation equations were determined for the zones and solved by Mathematica and Matlab software by applying proper boundary and jump conditions. Since lycopodium particles have numerous spores, the porosity of the particles was involved in the equations. Further, significant parameters such as lycopodium vaporization rate and thermophoretic force corresponding to the lycopodium particles in the solid phase were examined. The temperature distribution, flame sheet position, fuel and oxidizer mass fractions, equivalence ratio and flow strain rate were evaluated for the counter-flow non-premixed flames. Ultimately, the thermophoretic force caused by the temperature gradient at different positions was computed for several values of porosity, fuel and oxidizer Lewis numbers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The demand for rubber gloves has significantly increased in both medical and non-medical fields due to the spread of the coronavirus in 2019. It is challenging for rubber glove manufacturing industries to balance the production and demand for the product. Additionally, they must determine techniques to decrease the production costs so as to make rubber gloves more economical for consumers. Generally, natural gas, fossil fuels, and renewable energy sources are used worldwide in the manufacturing of rubber gloves. In addition, Thailand uses biomass energy for rubber glove production, but biomass utilization is not economically friendly. This study used different biomasses as fuel in rubber glove production so as to reduce production costs and make the process more environmentally friendly. Wood chip (WC), palm kernel shells (PKS), and oil palm mesocarp fiber (OPMF) biomass were collected from local regions and used in different ratios. The samples of WC, PKS, and OPMF were prepared in four different ratios, namely, 88:12:0, 85:15:0, 85:13:2, and 85:10:5, for efficient biomass utilization. The 85:10:5 (WC: PKS: OPMF) ratio was found to be the optimal ratio as the annual production costs of rubber gloves significantly decreased to USD 1.64 per 1000 units of gloves. Furthermore, this biomass ratio also showed the best boiler efficiency of 74.87%. Understanding the daily use patterns of traditional and nontraditional cooking technologies is essential for researchers and policy makers attempting to reduce indoor air pollution and environmental degradation from inefficient cookstoves. This paper describes field methods and proposes a new algorithm for converting temperature data generated from stove use monitors into usage metrics for both traditional and nontraditional stoves. Central to our technique is recording the visual on/off status of a stove anytime research staff observes the stove. The observations are regressed against temperature readings in a logistic regression to estimate the probability that a temperature reading indicates usage. Using this algorithm we correctly predict 89% of three stone fire observations and 94% of Envirofit observations. The logistic regression correctly classifies more observations than published temperature analysis algorithms. In the current work, the feasibility of a novel heat and power cogeneration system comprising a biomass gasifier, a supercritical carbon dioxide cycle, a gas turbine cycle, a Stirling engine, and a domestic water heater in a well-organized design is investigated. The whole system's performance has been appraised, overlooking the role of the Stirling engine. The biomass fuels employed in the gasification process are municipal solid waste (MSW), paper, paddy husk, and wood. Subsequently, the energy, exergy, exergoeconomic, and environmental (4E) investigations are applied to conduct a comparative study and designate the best biomass. Consequently, the MSW was recognized as efficient biomass fuel, and the comprehensive parametric study and multi-criteria optimization for the whole system were implemented utilizing this fuel. The optimization process has been performed using the MOGWO algorithm and the LINMAP decision-making approach. The results revealed that the evaluated variables are more sensitive to vary the gas turbine inlet temperature and Stirling engine features than the other parameters. Renewable energy improves energy security, provides reliable power supply, and ensures fuel diversification. It also offers a solution to the problem of circular debt which has lately become a major concern for the power sector of Pakistan. At present, the share of renewable energy resources in the energy mix is significantly low and the Government of Pakistan (GoP) is urging the drivers and enablers to boost clean and green energy generation and distribution. The power sector, especially the distribution companies, are facing numerous issues in transmission and distribution of power, and recovery of losses. Distributed generation (DG) can play a vital role in overcoming these issues. The effectiveness of solar PV systems, the active role of the capital market, and environmental concerns are among the major factors that prompt the adoption of net-metered solar systems. Apart from traditional alternate energy sources through sunlight and wind, Pakistan has enormous potential for biomass fuel if it could develop proper facilities for biomass-based electrification. For issues related to grid coverage and technical losses in far-flung rural areas, mini-, and micro-hydro power-based distributed generation can serve the purpose. Distributed generation can play a vital role in steering the national power sector toward power sources that offer clean, green, and cheap energy. Objectives: The objective of this paper is to provide information on indoor air quality and on the quality of the broader indoor environment of the houses in Roma villages in Slovakia and Romania and to discuss possible implications for health. Methods: Indoor air was sampled in 11 houses in a Romanian Roma village and in 19 houses in a Slovakian Roma village. Levels of Carbon Monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), total particulate matter (PM), temperature and humidity were measured. A questionnaire and a checklist were used to obtain additional information on the indoor environment and behavioural factors. We have sampled the same houses in winter and in summer. Results: Levels of CO and CO2 were higher in winter in both countries as compared to summer. The limit value of 10 mg/m³ CO was exceeded in a few cases in both countries. In general, levels of CO, CO2 and PM were higher in Romania. Further environmental and behavioural hazar such as indoor smoking, pets inside or lack of ventilation were found. The reported self-perceived quality of the indoor environment was poor in many aspects. Conclusions: Our findings of CO, CO2 and PM levels suggest that indoor air pollution in Roma settlements has the potential to be a health threat. The fact that the inhabitants spend a relatively long time inside the houses and that a number of additional environmental and behavioural hazards were identified by our study emphasizes the importance of the indoor air quality for health and thus priority attention should be paid to these issues by health authorities and researchers. Further research is essential and study designs must consider cultural background and specific characteristics of the community, especially in order to obtain valid data on health outcomes. Increasing demand for power and the depletion of fossil fuels are providing opportunities for the development of fuel cells as power generating systems. This paper investigates the integration of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with biomass gasification for the production of power and heat (combined heat and power (CHP) system). A steady-state model was developed in the gPROMS modelling tool to investigate the integrated system.The system was modelled for two different options, a cold process involving gas cleaning at a reduced temperature and a hot process involving gas cleaning at a high temperature.For each option, the model was used to determine the system efficiency and prospective costs. The electrical efficiency and overall system efficiency for the hot process were found to be 23 and 60% and for the cold process the efficiencies were 21 and 34%, respectively. Superior heat management in the gas cleaning stage of the hot process results in its higher system efficiency. The capital cost for the hot process appears higher than that for the cold process. This differential capital cost may be justified by the income earned from selling the extra heat produced in the hot process. Conversely, the cold process produces a gas stream with lower levels of impurities than the hot process. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract Consumption of energy is a determinant of the socioeconomic status of many citizens across the globe. The majority of rural households in India are dependent on biomass fuels. Existing data on the factors affecting fuel switching in rural India are insufficient to analyze a behavioral change among families. This paper evaluates the influence of four variables income, education, cost of fuel, and clean fuel supply on fuel adoption decisions. To understand the study population's behavioral change, a Household Survey is conducted in 20 villages (in India's rural district). Along with field observation, data are also collected on energy usage at the household level using a formal questionnaire. Binary logistic regression is applied to establish a link between the variables. Both biomass fuels and Liquefied Petroleum Gas are used mostly for cooking. The prevalence of energy stacking behavior is observed even among middle and upper‐income families. Modest evidence for the “energy ladder” hypothesis is seen, however, a “switch over” to cleaner fuels is not.

Most of the air pollutants in the steel industry come from the sintering process, and the air pollutants produced by the sintering process mainly come from the sinter fuel (coke breeze). The S and N content of biomass fuel is low; therefore, biomass fuel is used instead of coke breeze for sintering to reduce the emission of the sinter flue gas pollutants. However, the use of biomass fuel reduces the sintering layer temperature, which results in the deterioration of the sinter properties. In order to ensure the quality of sintering base on biomass fuel, the thermodynamic calculation and related experiments were carried out, the effects of different basicity, MgO and Al2O3 content on the formation of low melting point minerals in sintered mixture were studied, and the suitable composition of sintered mixture was determined in this paper, so as to reduce the liquid phase formation temperature of sinter and increase in biomass fuel addition, which provided theoretical support for the application of biomass fuel in sintering. Experimental results indicate that the suitable conditions for the low-temperature sintering were a basicity of 2.0, and MgO and Al2O3 contents of 1.0% and 1.8%, respectively. Under this condition, more biomass fuel can be used to replace coke breeze, and the emission of flue gas pollutants can be greatly reduced.

This paper investigates the ability of insulation cellulose fiber powder (CFP) to be pelletized for its valorization as biomass fuel. CFP is a waste originating from insulation cellulose manufacturing that lacks any method of valorization because of its boron salts content. A sugar byproduct and lignosulfonate (LS) were considered as binders for the pellet manufacturing process. Physical tests were carried out to characterize the pellets’ performance. Chemical and combustion tests were considered to state the pellets’ potential as a green energy source. Raw CFP showed good ability in its pelletization and durability in the range of 15–30% of moisture content. The pellet’s density decreased as water content increased. Binders increased the pellet’s length before and after the durability test. Binders also increased the CFP pellet’s water absorption, demonstrating a potential decrease in durability against environmental factors. Binders also decreased the lower heating value. Ultimate analysis showed a slight Nitrogen increase in both binder combinations that could potentially raise the pollutant NOx combustion emissions. All the combinations showed adequate combustion characteristics, but binders increased ash production. Additives decreased the CFP volatile matter content and increased the fixed carbon, which could facilitate a more stable combustion. DTA curves showed a mass loss rate decrease in the volatile stage for the binder combinations, which also could be considered as an indicator of a more stable combustion. The ashes’ chemical compositions when analyzed by XPS showed boron contents oscillating between 10.03% and 16.42%, demonstrating the possibility of recovering them from the combustion ashes.

In this study, flue gas emissions from combustion of eco-fuel briquettes in a ceramic lined stove were investigated. The eco-fuel briquettes were made of biomass such as spent coffee beans, mielie husks, saw dust, paper pulp and coal fines using a hand operated screw press. A combustion set-up consisting of digital weightometer, a ceramic lined stove and a complete chimney system was used. The emissions from the combustion process were measured using a Testo 350 gas analyser linked to the chimney system. The eco-fuel briquettes made from a mixture of biomass and coal fines burnt within the acceptable exposure limits as set out by the Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA). The flue gas emissions from the combustion of eco-fuel briquettes were found to contain 74 parts per million (ppm) carbon monoxide (CO), 4.32 ppm hydrogen sulphide (H2S), 1.34ppm nitrogen oxides (NOx) and 3.67 ppm sulphur oxides (SOx). The measured gross calorific value was 18.9MJ/kg, with a burning rate of 2g/min. These properties make eco-fuel briquettes suitable for domestic applications. A survey conducted as part of this study also revealed a significant demand for eco-fuel briquettes in many informal settlements in Gauteng Province, South Africa, at a competitive selling price of R2.60/kg.

Exposure to harmful by-products of combustion arising from the use of biomass fuels for cooking and heating in rural areas of developing countries results in poor air quality and is responsible for millions of deaths yearly. Little formal quantification and measurement of carbon monoxide (CO), one of these harmful air pollutants, have been performed in rural areas of North India. In the current study, we measured exposure to CO from cooking and heating in seven households using biomass and liquid petroleum gas (LPG) in open and closed kitchens. Exposures to CO ranged from 4.81 to 7.01, 0.20 to 1.81, and 0.02 to 0.75 mg m−3 for households cooking with biomass, cooking with LPG, and for households in which no cooking occurred, respectively. It was observed that the CO concentration in biomass-only households is much higher (78%) than in LPG-only households (14%). We found exposures in closed kitchens approximately two times higher than in open kitchens. Location of the kitchen (i.e., open vs. closed) was the most important determinant of exposure of primary cooks to CO in this geography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Indoor air pollution associated with cooking and heating biomass fuel burning is estimated to be responsible for 7 million deaths in 2016 and most of these deaths occur in low and middle income countries. In Côte d'Ivoire, 73% of the population is reported using biomass (charcoal or wood) for cooking. The active device 3M EVM-7 was used to measure PM2.5 daily average concentrations inside and outside households in areas close (Andokoi) and far (Lubafrique) to an industrial zone in two popular neighborhoods of Yopougon, the largest and most populated municipality of the city of Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire). PM2.5 daily average concentrations indoors and outdoors are respectively 121±12 μg/m³ and 117±8 μg/m³ in Andokoi and 32±3 μg/m³ and 41±4 μg/m3 in Lubafrique well above the World Health Organization guideline value (25 μg/m³) for air quality. Using multivariable models, the results were the number of windows in bedrooms and kitchens located outdoor were negatively correlated with the concentration of indoor PM2.5. Background. More than 90% of all low birthweight (LBW) babies are born in developing countries, and half of the population in developing nations uses solid fuels as their primary source of energy for cooking. An association between household use of solid biomass fuels and reduced newborn weight has been found in a number of countries. Bangladesh has a high prevalence of LBW babies (22%), and 88% of the population use solid fuels for cooking. Objectives. This study aims to explore whether indoor air pollution is associated with LBW in Bangladesh, an important determinant of infant mortality and morbidity. Methods. The 2011 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) was used for the present analysis. The total number of births reported in the previous five years by respondents in the survey sample was 8,753. Mothers' recall of their baby's weight was the dependent dichotomous variable. A mixed effects logistic regression model was fitted using region as a random effect and several independent fixed effects. Results. High pollutant cooking fuels, such as coal and wood, resulted in higher odds of having a LBW child compared to use of electricity/gas (odds ratio (OR): 2.6, confidence interval (CI): 1.1–6.2 and OR: 1.1, CI: 1.0–1.2). Factors which lowered the odds include mothers with a bachelor's degree or higher education (OR: 0.6, CI: 0.4–0.9), third order children (OR: 0.8, CI: 0.6–0.9), fourth or higher order children (OR: 0.8, CI: 0.6–1.0), having a male child (OR: 0.7, CI: 0.7–0.8), and receiving sufficient antenatal care (OR: 0.8, CI: 0.6–0.9). Factors which increase the odds of having a LBW infant include mothers who are underweight compared to normal weight mothers (OR: 1.1, CI: 1.1–1.2), mistimed pregnancies (OR: 1.2, CI: 1.0–1.4), or unplanned pregnancies (OR: 1.3, CI: 1.0–1.7), compared to planned pregnancies. Conclusions. This is the first paper to show an association between use of highly pollutant biomass fuel and prevalence of LBW babies in Bangladesh, suggesting that besides polluting the air and causing respiratory illnesses, biomass fuel combustion may also affect the health of fetuses in utero. Further longitudinal studies are required to establish this finding among mothers in developing countries. Ethics Approval.
