In China, two modular multilevel converter (MMC) projects were recently commissioned, and another two are currently under construction. The real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test bench played an important role in validating the manufacturer's controllers. The full detail MMC model does not fit with the HIL test bench, which has to solve the circuit containing numerous switches and handles a large amount of inputs and outputs at a small time step for real-time simulation. The main challenge is to find a method to model and simulate the MMC systems with sufficient detail, accuracy, and speed. This paper presents an equivalent circuit method for the HIL test bench. The circuit inside the submodule is represented by mathematical equations, implemented in CPU or a field-programmable gate array, and solved in parallel to achieve real-time performance. This method-based test bench is used in those MMC projects in China and connected to the manufacturer's controllers for HIL tests. The model accuracy and simulation speed achieved by this method met the requirements of the HIL tests. In this paper, various scenarios are tested in an MMC HVDC study system. The ?1100 kV UHVDC wall bushing is the important power equipment in the ?1100 kV DC power transmission project of China. However, the reported literatures rarely mention its design method and the optimization of its insulation structure. In this paper, two specific designing schemes including the resin impregnated paper (RIP) condenser and the metalshielded core have been both adopted in the design of the wall bushing. Moreover, the actual operating environment and the rated parameters of the ?1100 kV UHVDC wall bushing have been analyzed in detail. Then, the nonlinear finite element method (FEM) analysis has been applied in the three-dimensional electric stress simulation of the UHVDC wall bushing. The electric field and temperature dependencies of the composite insulation used in the wall bushing have been taken into account. The E-field simulation results indicate that with the RIP condenser, the potential and electric field distribution can be much more uniform along the composite insulator of the bushing. Therefore, the compact design of the wall bushing can be obtained by this designing scheme. On the other hand, with the type of the metal-shielded core, the high E-field strength areas are mainly concentrated on the metal shield and the outer grading ring of the wall bushing. Therefore, the nonlinear FEM was applied in the structure optimization of the internal metal-shielded system used in the wall bushing. Finally, the maximum E-field strength of the wall bushing can meet the control requirement. Based on the simulation results and the optimization structure, the ?660 kV scaled prototype of the UHVDC wall bushing has been produced and passed through all the type tests according to the IEC 62199. The feasibility of the design of the ?1100 kV UHVDC wall bushing has been verified. A quasi-continuous high magnetic field is a special kind of pulsed magnetic field with a flat-top field longer than 100 ms. This paper proposes a hybrid power supply that consists of a capacitor power supply and a generator-rectifier power supply. A dual-coil magnet is powered to generate a 65 T/100 ms quasicontinuous high magnetic field with a ripple less than 500 ppm at the Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center, Wuhan, China. A protection circuit consists of an R-C branch and a diode array is discussed for the worst short-circuit fault, which occurs between the first turns of inner coil and outer coil. This type of faultwill produce oscillation voltage with a high peak value and high frequency on the rectifiers. A self-adaptive PI controller with the coefficients corrected by a back propagation neural network is adopted to reduce the ripple of a flat-top. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the rapid development of high-speed and high-power railway system in China, power quality such as the negative sequence current and harmonic current caused by electric locomotives becomes more and more critical. This paper proposes a half-bridge-converter-based railway static power conditioner (RPC) (HBRPC) which consists of two half-bridge converters connected by two capacitors in series. Compared with the traditional RPC, the HBRPC requires only a pair of power switch legs and two capacitors. Under the premise of accomplishing the same function of RPC, the proposed conditioner can reduce half of the power switches, which can make it with lower cost and hardware complexity. A double-loop control is proposed for HBRPC to keep the dc-link voltage stable and achieve the dynamic tracking of the current reference signals, while a balanced voltage control is proposed to eliminate the error of two capacitor voltages and maintain the normal operation of HBRPC. Coils for pulsed magnets in the range of 50-75 T are developed with optimized combinations of conductors and reinforcement for the prototype laboratory of the Wuhan High Magnetic Field Center (WHMFC). The basic design tool is a Pulsed Magnet Design Software package (PMDS) for calculating the capacitor discharge, conductor heating, mechanical stresses and the residual stress, including plastic deformation and winding tension. A 1 MJ capacitor bank is equipped with a thyristor switch, a mechanical switch, polarity reversal switches, a current limiting inductor and a diode crowbar. A pulsed high magnetic field laboratory has been funded to be established at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), Wuhan, China by the National Development and Reform Committee. The facility is planned to be open for external users in 2011 with the implementation of various experimental techniques in pulsed magnetic fields up to 80 T. Pulse durations are in the range from 15 to 1000 ms with the magnet bore sizes from 12 to 34 mm. The pulsed power supplies are a 12 MJ, 25 kV capacitor bank and a 100 MVA/100 MJ flywheel pulse generator. The design and analysis of the power supplies and the magnets of short and long pulse durations and the multi-stage pulsed magnets with controllable waveforms are presented in this paper.
