Global learning has become a fundamental aspect of international education. Yet, a clear understanding of global learning and how to develop it remain unclear. Using the dynamic systems approach, this paper analyzed the reasons, methods, and knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSA) of global learning in higher education. Global learning is the higher education institutions' critical response to globalization. It is the essential learning outcome of comprehensive internationalization of curriculum requiring students to develop KSA about the external world and their internal selves in their daily lives across local and global communities. With survey results from 142 undergraduate students in one U.S. university and a global learning rubric and publication, this paper demonstrated how global learning is interpreted and approached differently at various levels and further proposed pedagogical approaches to enhance global learning in higher education.

In recent years, the pressure for educators to cultivate civic participation among Canada's apathetic youth voters has been mounting. Between 1998 and 2007, a national wave of curriculum reform introducing or enhancing civic engagement education occurred at the secondary level. In this study, we explore the role and place of civic engagement in the Canadian university curriculum. We have chosen to focus on curriculum in political science programs because calls to increase civic engagement originated with the goal of increasing participation in voting by young people, and because civic engagement is widely espoused as a central value in the discipline of political science. We report the findings of a national survey of politics instructors and their course syllabi regarding civic engagement as an intended learning outcome. Our analysis of the survey data involved a comparison of instructor responses with the assessment activities identified on their course syllabi. By analyzing the real and imagined audience(s) and purpose(s) of course assignments, we find that students are required to complete assignments that situate them within academic contexts involving academic purposes and audiences. The apparent conflict between civic education outcomes and academic assessment tasks relates to broader conversations about the purposes of political science education and higher education in general.

The use of an ePortfolio to support the education of health and social care professionals is increasing in higher education. ePortfolios support the educational journey of students; however, it is unclear how they are used to demonstrate competency or enhance employability. The aims of this study were to explore the literature to identify the use of ePortfolios in health and social care higher education curricula to demonstrate competency or improve employability. Three electronic databases were searched to identify papers using scoping review methodology. Studies that were published between 2001 and 2019 were included. A total of 1530 articles were initially identified after duplicates were removed. Nine studies were included in the final qualitative synthesis following a robust review. Data were synthesised into themes that describe the role of ePortfolios in demonstrating competencies in higher education or improving employability they were (1) Self-Directed Learning, (2) Deeper Learning, (3) Expanding Literacies, (4) Successful Implementation. These studies highlight that ePortfolio is both a product and a process. ePortfolios support students to gather artefacts that demonstrate professional competency which can be applied in the job-seeking process. The ePortfolio development process applies social constructionist approaches to learning which support lifelong learning and enhance employability. The findings also highlight the importance of providing students with clear expectations of the role of an ePortfolio in their professional learning journey.

Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) is a foundational sequence of courses required for students to complete as a prerequisite prior to admission to a range of graduate health programs and degrees, some of which include medical schools, nursing, occupational and physical therapy, exercise science, cardiovascular technologist, diagnostic medical sonography, dental hygienist, respiratory care, and radiography. While undergraduate A&P course content is fairly standard, differences in curricula, as well as differences in the student populations within these classes exist. In this paper we examine ways in which a more inclusive teaching environment can be created to support an increased sense of belonging for LGBTQIA+ students within anatomy and physiology courses, potentially leading to higher retention and success rates (Fenaughty et al. 2019; Garvey et al. 2017; National Academy of Sciences 2017; Snapp et al. 2015). Inclusive teaching has largely been absent within STEM disciplines, leading to negative perceived classroom experiences within STEM courses (Snapp et al. 2015; Garvey and Rankin 2015). Faculty can help to reduce barriers to success faced by gender and sexual minority students by growing in cultural competency, using inclusive vocabulary, and infusing their courses with accurate content that allows all students to see themselves in the curriculum.

This paper reports the study which explored the learning and teaching of the topics of climate change, sustainability and disaster risk reduction in secondary-level teacher education programs in England and Japan. Through interviewing teacher educators, the study particularly probed how teacher education programs used local knowledge and collaboration in discussing the above topics. Geography tends to be the main subject area for these global agendas, but its crammed curriculum is "an ongoing challenge" for teacher education. Some researchers demonstrate that university-based initial teacher education has "ignored" training teachers on how to implement environmental and sustainability education at schools. Besides, the inquiries into how initial teacher education equips geography teachers for the learning and teaching of disaster risk reduction are still scarce. This paper aims to fill this gap by bringing together the fields of geography education, climate change and sustainability education, disaster risk reduction education and initial teacher education.

Education system plays a very crucial role in any country towards achieving a sustainable development and strengthening social, cultural, historical and integral development, and is often called as the back born of the society. Producing competent graduate, professional or technical expert and a responsible citizen enriched with social and cultural values, which eventually enhances the quality of a country's workforce, is one of the ways the education system contributes to the development of a country. Giving the due recognition to the importance of the education system that paves the way for integral development of a country, some countries have practiced and promotes a free education policy. The purpose of this paper is to explore the salient features and its evolution of the free education system in Sri Lanka and its emerging challenges for policy makers. This paper also aims at suggesting alternative strategies to overcome the challenges that are emerging from the changing global market context by pooling of views and ideas of academics and other experts in the field of education. This study expects to suggest alternative strategies to overcome the emerging issues in the free education system that would add value to the policy makers to objectively develop future strategies and policies relating to the education system of the country. In order to achieve the aforesaid objective, this study explores the existing literature relating to education systems and experts' views and authors' own experience as academics. This study demonstrates that the Sri Lankan education system requires an urgent reform to revise on a holistic approach to address emerging issues in the areas of policy making level, implementation level and supervisory and regulatory level. This study recommends providing annually a six percent from the GDP for the state education, eliminating disparities between rural and urban popular schools, timely revision of general school curriculum in order to make it best fit the changing world, promoting student centered and participatory learning environment, protecting the higher education right of the qualified students who are not absorbed by the state universities and protecting and enhancing the economic, career and social welfare of the school teachers as the key areas that the policy makers must pay their close and urgent attention.

Due to COVID-19, the world has encountered new challenges regarding pedagogy, learning, assessment, and evaluation. In meeting these challenges, there have been rapid changes in learning, and the gap between pedagogy and evaluation has grown. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new evaluative model suitable for the technologically enhanced, multicultural environment of the 21st century. In this article, we develop a unique multidimensional model of Culturally Relevant Academic Evaluation (CRAE) that fills a gap in the scientific literature on evaluation in higher education. The model depicts evaluation as an integrated process of four dimensions: two of them based on the well-established dimensions of learning and curriculum, and two based on the novel dimensions of inclusive multiculturalism and technology. We consider evaluation in its broad context in higher education, and we analyze the interrelations between the four dimensions of the evaluation process, discussing their contribution to the enhancement of evaluation in higher education.

Information systems programs have offered students opportunities for service learning in their curriculum through elective courses and through capstone courses. However, even though there have been numerous research studies showing the benefits of international service learning experiences, information systems programs have not yet developed these in their curriculum on a large scale. This paper provides an account of an implementation of an international service learning experience through an information systems project management course. Students worked with a middle school in Guatemala to successfully deliver a sustainable website. The course is described using a modified service learning framework. The framework consists of preparation, action, reflection, evaluation, and share. The paper also provides challenges and lessons learned. This modified framework and challenges and lessons learned can be used by other programs to structure their own international service learning experience.

Recent technologies are offering the power to share and grow knowledge and ideas in unprecedented ways. The CogEx software platform was developed to take advantage of the digital world with innovative ideas to support designers work in both industrial and academic contexts. This paper presents a qualitative study on the usage of CogEx during capstone design projects in mechanical engineering. It explores its potential to eventually supersede a paper logbook. This study combines three pilot projects where 15 undergraduate students used CogEx for one semester and discussed their experience in a final interview. The focus is limited to individual usage in this study. Results support that the platform has a good potential for engineering design education by replacing the paper logbook. The "extended concept mapping" structure was efficient to organize design work, and although the "concept-knowledge" separation needs refinement, it has good potential in building designer knowledge base.

The objective of this research paper is to define the significance of forensic accounting and reflecting the need of including forensic accounting in the curricula of accounting departments in universities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The research followed the descriptive analytical approach. The research community consisted of a sample representative of faculty members in the accounting departments of universities in the Kingdom. Where (150) questionnaires were distributed and (126) questionnaires were collected, i.e., a response rate of (84%). The research employed the (SPSS) program to analyze and test its hypotheses, such as "There is no knowledge of the importance of forensic accounting among accounting department staff of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia universities". The research has reached several results, the most important of which are: all faculty members in accounting departments at universities in the Kingdom are aware of the significance of forensic accounting, and they agreed that it should be included in the accounting education curriculum. Finally, the research calls for numerous recommendations, the most important of which are: setting specific and clear plans for how to include forensic accounting in the accounting curricula in accounting departments in universities in the Kingdom, and organizing more (conferences, researches, training courses, workshops...) by accounting departments in universities in the Kingdom and other bodies that regulate the profession of accounting in the field of forensic accounting to further demonstrate its real significance.

In this paper, a comparative evaluation of the undergraduate program of Chemical Engineering curriculums of Chinese and Ethiopian universities was performed. The study employed systematic qualitative methods to synthesize the current qualitative researches into an explanatory process. To comprehend the Chemical Engineering curriculum structure in two countries, a survey of courses from each country institution is presented. Since both countries use harmonized chemical engineering curriculum with their respective institution, top university from each country was taken as a representative sample, Tsinghua University (THU) from China and Addis Ababa University (AAU) from Ethiopia. The major aspects in the comparison were the lengths of the programs, measurement of student workload, practical curriculum, and the ratio of general, core, compulsory and non-compulsory courses. At the THU, the minimum length for the undergraduate program is 4 years, whereas at AAU a minimum of 5 years is expected. While general education courses occupy 70% of the total credit in the THU curriculum showing more emphasis on general courses, the AAU curriculum gives more focus to core courses by allocating 70% of its total credit. The THU curriculum proves to be more flexible, offering more elective courses at different stages of the program; the AAU curriculum has provided the chance for a range of specialty streams offering elective courses in the final year of the program. Thus, it is highly appreciable for both countries' universities to optimistically add more courses to their present curriculum based on their socio-economic trait, cultural backgrounds, national demands, and resource availabilities.

In Ethiopia, women's access to higher education is a priority for many higher education leaders. Moreover, education access and participation are often measured quantitatively through enrollment, retention, and graduation rates. Often overlooked, however, are qualitative outcomes related to gender. To address this gap in the literature, we explore faculty perspectives on gender inequities in Ethiopian higher education by describing specific challenges to gender-equitable pedagogy and reporting participant-generated recommendations. We used an equity pedagogy framework and thematic analysis to examine qualitative data from interviews with 32 university faculty. We found that participants conflated equality with equity, and thus justified the use of a uniform pedagogy for all students. Barriers to gender equitable pedagogy included: pervasive gender stereotypes, curricula and learning environments centered on male learners, and the perception of "gender issues" as ancillary In relation to this last finding, faculty often viewed "gender issues" as political, societal, or outside the realm of their teaching responsibilities. Based on these findings, we discuss how gender inequity in Ethiopian higher education is systemic and should be approached as such. We conclude the paper with participant-generated recommendations.

This study describes the objectives, structures, and outcomes of a one-semester, required sociology research capstone course as taught at three institutions. Pre- and postquestionnaires from students, syllabi from instructors, and a random sample of final research papers were analyzed. Results indicate that the main foci of the course are to conduct research, produce a paper or thesis, develop writing and presentation skills, and integrate past learning. Instruction in this course includes numerous best practices from the literature on teaching and learning. There appears to be an underemphasis, however, on helping students to apply theory in their projects. The theses reveal a wide range of topics, methodological approaches, and quality, with the introduction/literature review and discussion/conclusion sections receiving the lowest quality scores. We are living in the age of quality competition, in marketing term, everything only persists until sustains its quality. If something elapsing its quality is meant to ending its existence from the world gradually. The idea of quality education is challenged and comprehended from numerous aspects. During the past decade, the number of higher education institutions (HEIs) in Pakistan has increased and the need for quality education is increased. Keeping in view the needs of the society the alarming question is the quality improvement of these HEIs. In the long run, the quality of education depends upon the teachers' qualities who are serving as nation builders in the system. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is working as a regulator of Degree Awarding Institutions (DAIs) in Pakistan. All regulated & accredited DAIs by HEC Pakistan are evaluating, improving and sustaining their quality through internal quality body Quality Enhancement Cells (QECs). All universities sustaining their internal quality through the operationalized mechanism of QEC are structured by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). The leading aim of the existing paper was to analyze the content concerning the quality assurance process of Higher Education (HE) in Pakistan. This study was conducted under the interpretive paradigm and evaluative content analysis was applied. The selected document was Self-assessment Manual used by Quality Enhancement Cells for the quality assurance of DAIs in Pakistan. Through thematic analysis, seven themes ("Curriculum," "Facilities," "Labs," "Students support," "Faculty," "Institutional support" & "Process control") were noted. Furthermore, it was assessed the QEC manual, mechanism and all its performance are measuring the quality of all disciplines with the same brush. By hanging all quality keys at the same grid (Manual), Teacher Education Programs (TEPs) are indirectly sustained in the standings of quality improvement in Pakistan. It was concluded that quality means meeting the predetermined standards and noted six themes during qualitative analysis was based on the Self-Assessment Manual used by QECs in DAIs in Pakistan.

Discourses and relations of child/adult and early education are super-permeated with ideas and practices of authority and boundary-making. In early years' practices, deeply important beliefs and assumptions about who or what has authority and who or what should create the boundaries of everyday activity often go unquestioned. This produces different kinds of epistemic injustice in respect of children and those who work with them, as well as through the materialities of early childhood and training settings, including higher education. These systems of authority both express and produce wider patterns of living associated with the wider society, including democracies. Posthumanism inspires questions about not only ways of knowing, but also about the privileging of dis/embodied knowing over feeling, intuiting, sensing, making, and moving. This paper thinks from the diffractive position that knowing is a direct material and moving engagement to explore possibilities for "sympoietic" pedagogies of enquiry-making-with (Haraway, 2016), and examines how these generate new ideas about early childhood practices and what professional knowledge might become. We illustrate this diffractive curriculum and pedagogy through an example from teacher education in South Africa to make important connections between authority, pedagogy, and an enlarged framework for democratic education; in this work, we explore "sympoietic" approaches to negotiation.

Capstone experiences have high educational impact with a number of approaches for biology. In most capstones, students produce a major project, typically as an undergraduate research experience, with a primary goal to integrate students' learning. At Augustana, our senior biology capstone uses history and philosophy to frame students' reflections and to integrate their biological education within our liberal arts and sciences curriculum. In a flipped classroom approach, students write a response to the assigned reading before class, when the paper is discussed through student-led seminars. Assigned papers consider the philosophy and historical development of biology focusing on its three conceptual pillars: function, development, and evolution, allowing students to examine how biologists arrived at their current understanding of life. Assessment of ten years of course offerings indicates students' ability to write and speak are being successfully developed, but that thinking shows no significant learning gains between the midterm and final exams. Student quantitative and qualitative ratings of the course indicate that it is a valuable learning experience, despite its heavy workload and difficult nature.

Research on entrepreneurship education (EE) has encountered confusing ontological and methodological issues, such as definitional controversy, gaps between research and practice, and lack of theoretical foundations. These are factors holding back the further development of the research and practice in this field. This paper presents a whole picture of EE by exploring key factors involved in EE programs such as objective, audience, content and method, and assessment with a macro integrative perspective. In this way, it points out the disintegrated micro perspectives employed in prior studies is the source of inadequate understanding of EE, which causes issues and confusions in present EE research. The macro integrative perspective offered by this paper provides an innovative way to tackle these issues and hence is expected to contribute to the further improvement of EE research and practice.

This paper provides a history of the standardized testing and accountability movement, the curriculum standards attached to the accountability movement, and the attempted shift to common core. Student poverty and its impact on student achievement are the focus of this paper. Recognizing the impact of poverty on student achievement as measured by standardized tests the authors question the explicit practices of teacher preparation programs in preparing teacher candidates to work with students of poverty, particularly at the middle level.

This study documents the transformation of a graduate-level course for teachers that had traditionally been taught in a face-to-face (f2f) model, in multiple sections, at a large university. By designing the course for online delivery and developing various interactive multimedia modules, the university was able to offer the course at a considerable savings while maintaining quality. The faculty worked in close collaboration, strategizing creative solutions to maintain the academic rigor and integrity of the course. Student papers and projects were analyzed and compared from both the f2f and online versions of the course to determine academic quality and learning outcomes.

Early in his paper, Radford discusses the origins of Western universities and argues that they were designed to provide a "very practical preparation for life and particularly for the professions, specifically law, medicine and theology." Radford then mentions how a core part of such education was grammar, rhetoric, and dialectic. Radford's purpose is to emphasise the practical nature of university education from the start and to imply that this should be its aim now. Throughout much of the paper he discusses the putative benefits of psychology and in so doing he is commenting on the nature of the modern world and its demands. Radford espouses a strange relativism about the subject, arguing that people ought to take seriously the "psychologies" of other cultures and embrace allied disciplines. This author does not share Radford's anthropocentric vision of psychology, which is about all behaving creatures, but rather advocates organising psychology along Niko Tinbergen's lines, which have emerged from the production of knowledge in the behavioural sciences and from a recognition of the explanatory requirements. The author's advocacy of Tinbergen comes from scientific judgement. In effect, market forces have tested Tinbergen's framework and the market has decided that it has value. The author argues that this market has not fully included psychologists who make curriculum decisions and claims that psychologists should pay attention to those in the human evolutionary behavioural sciences. Dickins stresses that academic psychology must be allowed to pursue scientific methods, develop new theories and falsify old, change frameworks, and follow particular interests as the market of ideas dictates. The economic value of education to individuals, families, communities, and nations continues to be one of the key justifications for investments in education globally. Yet, the total value of education should capture the value of both economic and non-economic outcomes that accrue to societies, in addition to all private returns. Unfortunately, there has been little progress to date in terms of estimating not just the social economic return from education, but the social non-economic return (i.e. externalities) that accrue from the experience of participating in education, particularly higher education, in a country such as Ethiopia. This paper aims to address these gaps by exploring whether participation in education yields immediate community benefits in Ethiopia. In particular, it addresses the question: is there evidence that young people who have recently participated in formal education are more engaged with community action in Ethiopia? Community action is an important form of education externality, as it could impact on the development of civic institutions over time in this low-income country. To set this in context, this paper considers the aims and outcomes of the Ethiopian education system with respect to the formation of young people's civic participation, the status of civics and ethical education in the curriculum, and how this relates to values and expectations within the community.

Ethics and ethical behaviour are the fundamental pillars of a civilised society. The focus on ethical behaviour is indispensable in certain fields such as medicine, finance, or law. In fact, ethics gets precedence with anything that would include, affect, transform, or influence upon individuals, communities or any living creatures. Many institutions within Europe have set up their own committees to focus on or approve activities that have ethical impact. In contrast, lesser-developed countries (worldwide) are trying to set up these committees to govern their academia and research. As the first European consortium established to assist academic integrity, European Network for Academic Integrity (ENAI), we felt the importance of guiding those institutions and communities that are trying to conduct research with ethical principles. We have established an ethical advisory working group within ENAI with the aim to promote ethics within curriculum, research and institutional policies. We are constantly researching available data on this subject and committed to help the academia to convey and conduct ethical behaviour. Upon preliminary review and discussion, the group found a disparity in understanding, practice and teaching approaches to ethical applications of research projects among peers. Therefore, this short paper preliminarily aims to critically review the available information on ethics, the history behind establishing ethical principles and its international guidelines to govern research. The paper is based on the workshop conducted in the 5th International conference Plagiarism across Europe and Beyond, in Mykolas Romeris University, Lithuania in 2019. During the workshop, we have detailed: (1) basic needs of an ethical committee within an institution; (2) a typical ethical approval process (with examples from three different universities); and (3) the ways to obtain informed consent with some examples. These are summarised in this paper with some example comparisons of ethical approval processes from different universities. We believe this paper will provide guidelines on preparing and training both researchers and research students in appropriately upholding ethical practices through ethical approval processes.

Capstones have become an integral part of many information systems programs, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. One of the challenges can be tracking the process from the start of the capstone to completion. This paper describes the analysis, design and implementation of a web application for the approval workflow of a master's program in information systems. The system replaces a paper form based process that was confusing, time-consuming, and error-prone. The system uses asynchronous JavaScript, responsive design, and clickable email links to provide a native-like look-and-feel on mobile devices, and reduce approval time. Student statuses are stored in a relational database, and program-level reports are provided for administrative decision making.

This study strives to single out the barriers and obstacles in terms of academic, course curriculum system and socio-cultural issues that impact on students' learning English language adversely in the prep year level at Jazan University, Saudi Arabia. This paper especially focuses on the factors affecting EFL ("English as a Foreign Language") students' teaching/learning engagement and progression at Jazan Community College (JCC) based on the semi interview of teachers, administrators and "classroom observations." The author administered the interview process based on a questionnaire and at the same time, the interviewees' reflections were noted down. The recorded data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of the research are expectedly surprising and contributing to EFL educational improvements and adjustments for all stakeholders in terms of instructional effectiveness. The data analysis in particular showed that most of the interviewing voices reflect students' negative stance towards learning English due to cross-cultural factors, lack of motivation and EFL teaching method and curriculum strategic defects in pre-university stage. In addition, this paper hypothesizes some effective and viable suggestions based on research investigation.

Business curriculums in many universities now include a senior Capstone course that integrates topics or materials from all business areas. This capstone course is designed to teach the skills of strategic thinking and analysis rather than mere facts or concepts. With that goal in mind, the ideal course is structured in such a way so that students get an opportunity to apply their knowledge from all previous courses taken before the capstone course. Instructors around the country use a variety of teaching tools in a capstone course that include simulation games, group projects, individual projects or paper, and/or case studies. One of the effective teaching tools in a capstone course is quarterly or annual earnings reports submitted to the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) by all publicly traded companies. Although earnings reports are used by some instructors as a reference or as part of a case study, it has not been widely used in a way that is demonstrated in this paper. The earnings reports have a rich array of information that can be used to teach business concepts from every business discipline--accounting, economics, finance, human resource management, international business, or marketing. Going through a detailed earnings report exposes students to a real world scenario, teaches them how to read between the lines, and enhances their critical and strategic thinking process. It is also a great way to brush up their knowledge from all previous courses which helps them to retain the knowledge and to do well on the business exit exam. This paper demonstrates an approach or method where students use business concepts, theories, financial ratios, and formulas using actual company data from an annual Earnings Report of a company submitted to the SEC. The idea presented here is not mutually exclusive of other tools used in a capstone course but rather contributes to learning if can be used simultaneously.

This paper describes a public pedagogy project embedded into The Global Teacher, a subject within the Bachelor of Education program for student teachers at an Australian university. The subject provides a global perspective on socio-political issues that shape education. In 2013, The Global Teacher introduced an approach that asked student teachers to create a museum-style exhibition depicting six global education themes. This exhibition was displayed in the State Library and the public were invited to engage with the installations and the student teachers who created them. Our paper describes how the project was implemented by means of close collaboration between the QUT teacher educators, curators at the State Library of Queensland (SLQ), and student groups working on visually translating their understandings of global educational issues into a public exhibition. We discuss what was learned by our students and ourselves, as teacher educators, by engaging in this public pedagogy.

Inspired by critical race and feminist perspectives, this paper complicates the conversation on preparing arts educators for diversity and equity. The authors ground their research on the premise that arts educators committed to challenging social inequalities must understand sociocultural influences on art, curriculum, teaching, and learning. The paper reports a qualitative study that investigated how pre-service arts educators make sense of sociocultural differences (i.e., the dynamics of race, class, gender and sexuality). Findings articulate key curriculum flashpoints that emerged when art teacher candidates engaged with sociocultural knowledge. These flashpoints include identity formation, questioning knowledge, and discourses of offense. The authors argue that these flashpoints present curricular provocations that can assist in developing the critical capacities of art educators. The conclusion explores the implications of these findings for organizing and teaching sociocultural content as foundational knowledge for arts educator preparation.

Outcome-Based Education (OBE) implementation is one of the qualifying requirements for engineering programme accreditation in Malaysia. Implementation of the OBE in Integrated Design Project (IDP) is essential in producing high quality engineering graduates that are able to meet the challenges especially in the era of Industry 4.0 in Malaysia. IDP is the course offered to the final year students of undergraduate programme in Faculty of Civil Engineering, University Teknologi MARA. This paper presents the mapping of the addressing Course Outcomes (CO) and Programme Outcomes (PO) to the scopes of assessment in a capstone project (CP) for IDP. The explicitness in the measurement of CO and PO in the course is demonstrated. The rubrics for the assessment of CP are also presented. Finally, evaluation of student performance in IDP particularly CP is discussed through a sample analysis of the CO and PO attainments.

In teacher education, action research has served as one of the tools for reflective practice to bridge the gap between the educational theories learned in the teacher training college and the actual pedagogical practice within the four walls of the classroom. In this descriptive and explorative research study, first the concept and characteristics of action research are outlined, supported by a discussion on action research types and models that are relevant to teacher training in Malaysia. Then, this paper explored the implementation of action research component in teacher education in Malaysia by first providing brief background information of action research in Malaysian teacher training institutes. Then, it discussed issues and challenges that are faced in terms of curriculum, teaching methods and objectives. The study also discussed the rationale for integrating action research component in teacher education programme. The result shows that the implementation of action research is hampered by the absence of exposure to action research in the earlier part of the training, the curriculum lacks practical input and the objectives set can be general and vague. It is recommended that action research workshops and trainings are conducted earlier in the training program and that more hands-on learning experience is introduced.

This paper describes a process of assessment reform designed to enhance Work Integrated Learning (WIL) approaches for two science courses at an Australian university. The project used a mixed-method approach involving online surveys, interviews, focus groups and workshops to gather student, industry and course team knowledge and understanding of WIL approaches to curricula. The investigation centred on the perceived value of collaborating with industry to facilitate enhancements in authentic assessment and on the barriers to, and challenges in, achieving successful outcomes. The action-research project, WIL-on-Campus (WoC), found that assessments oriented toward the inclusion of authentic tasks and processes, that contribute to the employability learning and job-readiness of students, is deemed important to students, industry and academics. However, reforms to assessment practice and process are required. For greatest impact, this study found that assessment reform processes require two critical interdependent factors: the socialisation of the shared institutional value of embedded WIL approaches to assessment, and the provision of top-down support to enable academic course teams to implement the 'imposed' changes. Further to this, while academics viewed the changes in approach to assessment design as challenging, they also noted that a shift is timely and believed that a course-wide WIL approach is possible and advantageous.

Research suggests graduates from music courses in Australian tertiary institutions typically undertake portfolio careers that include a combination of performing and teaching. Both of these activities could have ongoing artistic ripple effects on the musical communities the graduates inhabit. This paper reports on a qualitative post-graduate research study using Inductive Thematic Analysis to address the question: How do the pedagogical practices and curriculum content of Contemporary Popular Music (CPM) courses influence their graduates' performance practices and how, in turn, do the graduates influence the local music communities in which they perform and teach? With a specific focus on tertiary CPM guitar programs the study investigated how graduates are being influenced by Australian and non-Australian content, in the form of repertoire for ensembles and recitals, and course design. Also, how they are, in turn, influencing the local music communities through their activities. The sample for this research included current students, alumni and educators of Australian Bachelor level CPM courses. The British Invasion and the influence of the Afro-American Blues have had a lasting impact on Australian popular music. The study was designed to investigate if the pedagogical practices and curriculum content of Australian CPM courses intentionally continue to embrace this historical phenomenon, or if new advances in tertiary music education are creating new waves with further ripple effects.

This paper describes the transition that the Anisfield School of Business of Ramapo College of New Jersey made from a conventional Writing Across the Curriculum approach to a Writing Across the Business Core approach. The impetus for the change is explained as well as the creation and design of the program. The document driven program is analyzed, with special emphasis on faculty buy in. The rationale for the documents chosen is provided as is the logic behind the course sequence. The paper concludes with the results of the first assessment of the program.

The study sought to determine the effects of the use of Wordle and lecture method in teaching Curriculum Studies 1 EDU: 222 on students' performance. 100 students were purposively selected and to ensure homogeneity and consistency, the WRub was given to the 100 students and they were then grouped based on their performance--above average, average and below average. Cluster random sampling technique was used in assigning the three groups into the two experimental groups A and B using numbered papers. Each group had equal number of above average, average and below average. The WRub used was a teacher and student made test. It comprises 20-item objective test in EDU: 222 requiring students to provide answers and was constructed by the teacher in collaboration with the students from the topics selected through differentiation. Each correctly answered item attracted 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 based on the criteria set and a maximum of 100%. The WRub was administered before (pretest) and after (posttest) treatment for data collection. Pretest has the same feature as the posttest items. The only difference is that posttest items were reshuffled and the colour of paper changed to avoid test wiseness. The findings of the study revealed a significant difference in the mean scores of the students and a significant difference was noted between male and female students taught using Wordle. Based on these some recommendations were made among which are the need to include the use of social media as tools in teaching and the need to build the capacity of teachers in the use of technologies in teaching and learning.

Africa is known for inadequate access to all sorts of human needs including health, education, food, shelter, transport, security, and energy. Before the emergence of massive open online courses (MOOCs), open access to higher education (HE) was exclusive of Africa. However, as a generally affordable method of post-secondary education delivery, MOOCs place the developing countries at the centre of universal access to HE. This paper provides the strategy for MOOC implementation in the context of limited resources in Africa. The strategy is clustered under five baseline requirements: national accredited MOOC curriculum, electronic content development, development of an online and offline eLearning platform, establishment and funding of MOOC coordination units at public HEIs, and establishment of MOOC access hubs at strategic locations. Emerging from this paper is the insight that a new era of universal access to HE in Africa is achievable through MOOCs only if initial requirements are met by the respective governments.

Within the context of "big data", there is an increasing focus on the source of the large volumes of data now stored electronically. The greatest portion of this data is unstructured and comes from a variety of sources in a variety of formats, much of which does not conform to a consistent data model. As business and government organizations become "paperless", the system of "record" in these documents (including text messages, social media postings, tweets, and email messages) becomes more important. The job of "records management" is becoming more significant in the information systems discipline, as businesses and government agencies struggle to control and manage their electronic resources for regulatory, compliance, legal, and business analytics purposes. Records management has risen to be a separate discipline with its own certifications and job classifications. Many of the principles in the discipline were developed in the time of paper records but still apply in this electronic age, and are now considered part of the responsibilities of the information technology worker. As this is a potential large job market, it is time to consider whether electronic document management (in addition to database management) should be included in the college-level preparation of undergraduate students who will join the workplace in the time of "big data" and its exploitation. This paper looks at the field of electronic document (records) management and its insertion in the undergraduate information systems curriculum.

Recently the ["Information Systems Education Journal"] (ISEDJ) introduced a new area within its case study category that seeks to capture and disseminate successful classroom practices and teaching strategies. The primary motivation behind this enterprise is the construction of a repository that will help new academics draw from successful classroom strategies and techniques that have been successfully employed by peers around the world. This paper is a contribution toward this inaugural effort. The aim of this paper is to share a website we developed that helps our department tackle several challenging problems including the active engagement of students throughout the MIS curriculum, recruiting students to the MIS major and connecting our students and program to innovators throughout our region. Through this site we are effectively showing our students the importance of gaining a deeper understanding of technology and how studying MIS can help one pursue almost any career imaginable. This paper describes the site we developed and clearly shows how others can implement this format within their programs. Finally, this is applicable to all courses within the MIS Model Curriculum.

Changes in both the landscape of education and digital technology are giving rise to interesting, innovative, and potentially effective pedagogical possibilities. As educators of the 21st century, we are witnessing continuous changes in the way we teach as well as the way students learn. This study is a part of an ongoing research program aimed at evaluating the pedagogical effectiveness of blended teaching. More specifically, this paper aims to describe some of our reflections as we developed, delivered, and carried out an evaluation of a university course taught using a blended format. Undergraduate students (n = 109) in a fourth-year capstone course participated in this study. We report on the students' perceptions of the effectiveness of the delivery method of the course, while focusing on the struggles they encountered, including difficulties keeping up with the course content, particularly on the weeks where the lecture was online, as well as a struggle to stay organized and connected with their peers and their assignments. Self-regulation turned out to be a major determinant of success in this type of course. We conclude with suggestions to improve students' social and academic experiences as they navigate learning in a digital world.

Final year or Capstone Project is the final and important phase of the undergraduate curriculum in a Computer Science Engineering program. Final year project is a course where all the skills learnt by the students in the course are applied and evaluated. The important aspects in the delivery of this course are (i) developing a model to train the students to deliver quality project work and documentation, (ii) effective evaluation of the student based on rubrics which are mapped to the course outcomes, (iii) calculate program outcome and course outcome attainment and make necessary changes to improve the delivery of the course, and (iv) map the feedback from stakeholders as per graduate attributes and measure performance. This paper discusses the approach followed for three academic years 2014-2017 on a batch of 180 students per year. Training sessions, evaluation rubrics, usage of project management tools, mapping performance of the students with the outcomes of the course and program, feedback from the stakeholders like companies and students themselves gives a clear view of improvement of the performance of the students during the Final Year Project course in three years.

This paper introduces a newly accredited university programme for students with an intellectual disability (ID). The curriculum is largely based on disability studies pedagogy that creates awareness of the social, political, and economic factors that influence how individuals with a disability navigate society. The aim of the innovative curriculum is to provide students with an ID with a high quality postsecondary education that may better equip them when transitioning from the education sector to employment and independent living. The university programme demonstrates a potential framework for inclusive education and the promotion of a more equitable education system for students with an ID.

Due to the deteriorating investment environment, many real-estate companies in China have started transferring their business out of the construction industry. This leads to the shrinkage of the design market and also architects' salary. A great number of architects have switched career to maintain the same living quality as before. Meanwhile, architectural education in China is not able to integrate itself with emerging science and technologies, losing possibilities to explore new employment channels for its graduates. There is a huge gap between qualities needed in the current or future labour market and the architectural education in schools. An online survey was conducted to investigate the current state of architects' career shifting, trying to expose the problem mentioned above. In the second part of this paper, education missions from 50 universities are analysed and detailed education curriculums from three top universities are scrutinised. At the end, the education boundary is suggested to be reconstructed from three aspects: integrating the emerging technologies; reducing unnecessary content; and training in self-learning skills.

Collegiate athletics coaches play a vital role in the lives of student-athletes and regularly interact with the members of their teams more than faculty given the nature of athletics practice schedules compared to academic class schedules. Although the primary purpose of university attendance at all universities is pursuit of academic degrees, student-athletes receive broad non-academic, life-skills oriented education from athletics coaches. Typically, teaching faculty at American colleges and universities hold terminal degrees in their fields, but unlike international universities, faculty in the U.S. are not required to have any particular training in pedagogy. Due to the enormous amount of time athletics coaches spend with student-athletes, coaches, by nature must be effective communicators, effective motivators, effective teachers, and effective ethical models for their student-athletes to a degree not necessary for faculty members. The purpose of this paper was to gather recommendations from coaches for faculty members regarding needs of student-athletes, and a comparison of the perception of student-athlete needs between coaches and faculty members. We employed a mixed methods convergent parallel design. We administered a questionnaire that included both an open-ended response section to what the respondent wished faculty knew with respect to student-athlete success, and three Likert scale questions related to confidence in what faculty knew or did with respect to student-athlete academic needs. Based on the thematic coding of the responses by coaches, and quantitative analysis of the Likert scale questions, recommendations for faculty regarding curriculum and instruction are given in the discussion section.

A literature review discusses how teacher knowledge of assistive technology significantly impacts student success with assistive technology and that many teachers enter the field feeling unprepared to implement these technologies with students. This article explores one university's process in setting up an assistive technology laboratory for students to explore. Such experiential learning opportunities are vital to the success of special education educators. This paper explores how the lab is set up and the activities visitors complete to provide a foundation for those looking to develop a similar lab.

This article examines eight principles that can help preservice teachers make the connection between the Introduction to Educational Psychology class and working with the special needs of urban students. Based on research in educational psychology and its importance to preservice teachers, it is essential that professors who teach this discipline realize that successful and good practices for preservice teachers are based on (a) teaching educational psychology from a historical perspective, (b) developing a community of learning, (c) teaching issues of race, class, gender, and immigration, (d) being aware of students' m?res, culture norms, and traditions, (e) making a connection to theorists with how to teach and who to teach, (f) teaching the importance of development in knowledge, curriculum, and levels of understanding, (g) teaching the significance of proper feedback, and h) developing critical thinking skills. This paper is based on the perceptions of one of the authors on how to merge educational psychology theories with successful teaching practices within the urban classroom to work with the special needs of the diverse children.

This paper presents findings from a qualitative study of ePortfolio experiences among health professions students at a major Australasian research-intensive university. This exploratory study of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) aims to understand the experiences and perspectives of students introduced to program-level ePortfolios across multiple curricula in the health sciences. Six key themes emerged from the data: benefits of an ePortfolio at the curriculum level, ePortfolios as an enabling technology, the value of reflection, the role of user support, the speed and quality of feedback, and mitigating distance and isolation. These data show that a program-level strategy that embeds ePortfolios across a curriculum, including delivering assessable tasks in the ePortfolio platform, is beneficial to students when a scaffolded, structured approach is taken.

This paper explores: (a) the impact of psychology education governance on our understanding of subjectivity and (b) how this functions for neoliberal capitalist structures. The ways-of-knowing, power relations and perceptions of subjectivity are approached through texts selected from official documents governing the curriculum, and qualitative interviews with psychology students, including postgraduates with teaching responsibilities. Discourse is analysed using Foucauldian theory. The key findings are that a positivist psychology curriculum (a) is largely market driven, (b) is a way-of-knowing that subjugates and objectifies the subject (c) works to substantiate individualist discourses and that, finally, (d) despite claims of neutrality, constructs a subject that works to meet neoliberal capitalist objectives.

The paper is devoted to the problem of creating a system of training of future teachers for work with gifted schoolchildren in mathematics. The authors analyze the existing curricula and basic professional educational programs for the preparation of Bachelors in the directions of training "Pedagogical Education" and "Mathematics and Computer Science" in terms of ensuring the professional competencies of future teachers for the work in the conditions of existence of a professional standard. The authors propose a technology for preparation of students, involved the production of Bachelors with high competencies in the field of working with gifted children in mathematics. The purpose of the article is to analyze the actual level of Bachelor's training for working with gifted children in mathematics and, on this basis, to present the developed system of training future teachers for work with gifted schoolchildren in mathematics. The research methodology is based on a system of basic principles, methods and concepts of the psychological-pedagogical theory of mathematical giftedness: the content analysis of curricula and basic professional educational programs for Bachelor's training, a test for determining the readiness of a teacher to work with gifted children, a test for determining the propensity of a teacher to work with gifted children. The authors have developed and proposed a structure of vocational training of students to work with mathematically gifted children. Some shortcomings in the professional training of future teachers are revealed. The results of experimental work on the improvement of the basic professional educational program in the training directions "Pedagogical education" and "Mathematics and computer sciences" are presented. The existing problem of the lack of competencies of future teachers should be compensated with the help of development of means, techniques, technologies and methods that contribute to the competence of students in working with gifted children in mathematics.

The 3-year migration of the computing faculty for three undergraduate programs from ad hoc teaching to three accredited programs is the focus of this paper. This journey started after numerous international accreditation organizations were surveyed, and ABET was chosen as the faculty's target. In this paper, the timelines and processes for covering missing data, persuading instructors to collaborate, involving students in the process, and building an assessment model are discussed. Evidence from one of the three programs, the Information Systems program, is provided. In addition, during the 3 years, an accreditation system called AIMS was developed using Oracle to reduce the cost of writing numerous reports in different formats. This system aided the faculty in receiving accreditation from ABET for three programs in addition to other accreditation systems at low cost.

The adoption of a more market-oriented economy has paved the way for the Vietnamese education system to undergo continuous change for more than twenty years. This paper sets out: (1) to examine the impacts of globalisation and liberalisation on the education sector in developing countries, with a main focus on Vietnam, and (2) to determine how the education sector in Vietnam adapted to globalisation and liberalisation through an examination of the key reforms implemented in the higher education sector. This paper argues that to adapt to liberalisation, the Vietnamese higher education sector needs to adopt a holistic approach to reform the sector such as reforms in curriculum, access, research and development, and capacity building rather than focus mainly on achieving quantitative targets as outlined in the Higher Education Reform Agenda.

This paper draws upon data from a broader piece of research aimed at examining pre-service teachers' views of their initial teacher education within the context of a master's degree programme in teaching. The data were collected through questionnaires and written narratives at the beginning and at the end of the programme. In this paper, the data arising from 47 narratives at the end of the programme are presented. Five categories emerged from the qualitative data: curriculum content, teaching practice, the role of teacher educators, teaching and learning methods, the organisational aspects and structure of the programme. Although the participants identified positive aspects of the initial teacher education programme, they also stress that there is room for improvement, especially with regard to a greater coherence of the curriculum and a better articulation of its different components. Implications of the findings for enhancing the quality of initial teacher education and the role of teachers' educators are discussed.
