This paper reports two corpus-based studies of popular Indonesian and Chinese EFL textbooks which are often used to prepare students for English for Academic Purposes even though the textbooks target general English. The key question here is whether these textbooks expose learners to academic English vocabulary. The analysis involves four word lists: Coxhead's (2000) Academic Word List (AWL), Gardner and Davies' (2014) Academic Vocabulary List (AVL), Ackermann and Chen's (2013) Academic Collocation List (ACL), and Simpson-Vlach and Ellis' (2010) Academic Formulas List (AFL). The results indicate that neither the textbooks from Indonesia nor the ones from China provide learners with sufficient exposure to academic lexis from the four lists. The AVL has higher coverage and contains more high-frequency words, proper nouns and compound words than the AWL. This is unsurprising because these lists were developed in different ways. Very few academic multiword units appeared in the textbooks. Some implications for textbook designers and teachers are discussed, and suggestions for future research are made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While ranking systems, electronic word of mouth (eWOM) channels and recommendation systems might appear as three separate tools that influence consumer choice, consumers at online reading platforms are often exposed to all three simultaneously during a searching session of e-books. This study conducts an empirical analysis to examine the interaction effects of these three decision-supporting tools on online reading behavior. To do so, we collect a 25-week panel data set on Yuedu.163.com, which is one of the earliest online reading platforms in China. Our results indicate that informational cascades are particularly prominent on the online reading market. Under the influence of informational cascades, eWOM volume and valence have no impact on the clicks of e-books with high rankings, but have positive impact on the clicks of e-books with low rankings. Recommendation strength has a positive impact on popular e-books clicks, but has no impact on the clicks of less popular e-books. Moreover, we find that eWOM valence and recommendation strength have a substitute relationship in affecting the clicks of e-books with high rankings. However, eWOM and recommendation system have a complementary relationship in affecting the clicks of less popular e-books. To our best knowledge, this paper is the first to investigate the interaction effects of information cascades, eWOM and recommendation systems on online user behavior. Our findings provide important theoretical contributions and managerial implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From the perspective of performance and universality, this paper analyzed the characteristics of typical technologies for personalized recommendation system, and then made a basic architecture for the improved model. With the architecture, this paper introduced a personalized recommendation model in e-commerce system. The model is based on an n-tiers structure and the TOPSIS algorithm, first standardize the user evaluation indexes, and then determine the indexes weights according to user's needs, and finally calculate the personalized recommendation results. This model can be applied to a variety of e-commerce applications, especially for the e-commerce application with structured or semi-structured products such as digital books, journals and other publications. Based upon a recent review of the relevant literature in both English and Chinese, this paper assess the current state of and future prospects for digital publishing in China. It addresses developments both in the context of ongoing technological and organizational change and with regard to the wider social and cultural dimensions. Embodying a simulated SWOT exercise it considers the current and likely future state of digital publishing in China through the eyes of western publishers seeking to do business in that country. Digital publishing in China is still in its infancy, while perhaps remaining more opaque to western observers than was expected. Issues around ownership, industry structure, operating platforms, stakeholders, piracy and intellectual property remain critical. Perhaps more than anything, and certainly much more than in the West, the issue of culture, not only in terms of national values and perspectives but also in terms of how things are done, remains a potent influence on business relationships with foreigners. In the West this continues to feed perceptions of legal and commercial uncertainties, risks to intellectual capital and obstacles to the production and distribution of knowledge and ideas. Whatever the perceived downside to such phenomena however, China is still regarded as a major growth market for western publishers. It concludes that whereas there are many opportunities for both parties, and that both can learn from each other, the learning curve is likely to be much steeper on the western side, owing to the significance of the social and cultural dimension. DATABASES , *ELECTRONIC books , *SCHOLARS , *HUMANITIES research - Abstract
In every field, scholars find an increasing availability of electronic resources. Studies have shown that humanities scholars use and cite fewer electronic resources than their science and technology counterparts. Moreover, humanities scholars prefer monographs to periodicals or other resources. They continue to use ancient books and documents. In the digital era, many full-text databases of ancient Chinese books and documents have been created. In this study, ten professors of Chinese literature or history are interviewed to answer the following: What are the purposes of using the databases? How do they search the databases? How do they compare the databases to paper versions? What are the impacts of those databases on research in the humanities? All ten scholars report that they use digital databases of ancient Chinese books in both teaching and research. They find the databases easy to access and time-saving when retrieving documents. Most report that databases do not change their research methods or research interests. The scholars suggest that the coverage, quality and search interface should be improved to make the databases even more useful. In conclusion, however, they disagree about whether or not these databases will replace the paper versions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The importance of online reviews on online hotel booking has been widely acknowledged. However, not all online reviews affect consumers equally. Compared with common online reviews, key online reviews (KORs) have a greater influence on consumers' decisions and online hotel booking. This study takes the first step to investigate the factors affecting the identification of KORs and the role of KORs in online hotel booking. Design/methodology/approach: To test the research hypotheses, this study develops a crawler to obtain 551,600 online reviews of 650 hotels in ten representative large cities in China. This study first uses a binary logistic regression to identify KORs by combining review content quality and reviewer characteristics and then uses a log-regression model to investigate the role of KORs in online hotel booking. Findings: This study mined the factors affecting the identification of KORs by analyzing review contents and reviewer characteristics. Our results revealed that KORs play a mediating role in the effects of review content and reviewer characteristics on online hotel booking. Originality/value: This study focuses on KORs, which have received limited attention in research but are important to practitioners. Specifically, this study investigates the antecedents and consequences of KORs. Our results enable hotel managers to manage online reviews effectively, particularly KORs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article seeks to understand why so many medical writings produced in late imperial China have perished and what has prevented others from disappearing. To do so, it focuses on the life of medical writings produced in the southern fringes of the Qing empire. The aim, starting from an analytical framework limited in time and space, is to open up a more general discussion on the history of the medical book in late imperial China. To retrace this history, this article starts from the very act of writing a medical text and then examines the course of this writing's life, through its printing, and reading. The first part, an examination of a wide sample of medical texts produced in the region, highlights the social diversity of their authors as well as the plurality of objectives that these texts intend to achieve. The second part reconstructs the different steps that a manuscript must go through to be printed. This process, which requires the intervention of influential figures to correct and praise the text, and to finance its printing, is long and explains why most of the manuscripts did not survive, but it has another consequence. As the original text passes through the hands of many people, it collects comments and additions. The third part, which focuses on printed and handwritten annotations in the margins, underlines how printing a medical manuscript is a dynamic process which offers the possibility of integrating allographic elements and contributes to the very making of the text. Analysis of the handwritten annotations left by some readers reveals, in turn, the ability of readers to intervene in the life of medical books, after they have been printed and, in so doing, to update and enrich medical knowledge and practices. This paper presents the findings of a survey on the use of e-books at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) during a 6-week period in January/February 2010. The purpose of the survey was to obtain a snapshot of users' behaviour in using e-books so as to assist the Library in providing a more effective service for e-book provision. The survey questions were designed to reveal useful information about users' behavior, from their level of awareness of e-books to their preference for print and electronic formats. Information about how they access the current collection, the features they desired, the frequency and intensity of use, what and how they read and their main purpose for using e-books could also provide useful comparative data for other libraries. The growth is evaluated in relation to new revenues generated, the size of the market segments represented by e-journals, eBooks, digital newspapers, blogs, online music and games. The leading companies in each of these sectors are identified as there is still a reluctance of traditional publishes to move more aggressively into the new media publishing. Finally, a review of the challenges that the lack of copyright present to the industry as legal systems have not caught up with the rapid developments of the media or online information industries. With a rise in the technology for the production of electronic or digital materials, funders and administrators of libraries are increasingly leaning towards providing digital reading materials to users. In crowded cities like Hong Kong where space is a scarce commodity, the save-space feature of digital libraries is an even more attractive reason why users of library facilities in academic and public libraries are being encouraged to read electronic versions of publications. In this article we show that, however laudable the advantages of electronic books may be over physical print books, user preferences in every situation must be carefully analyzed before a paradigm shift from print to digital library resources can be successfully effected. The data for this paper come mainly from a survey of user preferences among students of the University of Hong Kong, which shows that an overwhelming majority (77%) of the respondents prefers print to digital materials. We conclude that the success or otherwise of the paradigm shift from print to digital libraries would depend on measures taken to encourage a positive attitude of users for digital library resources.
