This paper deals with the computational modeling and numerical simulation of contact problems at finite deformations using the finite element method. Quasi-static and dynamic problems are considered and two particular frictional conditions, full stick friction and frictionless cases, are addressed. Lagrange multipliers and regularized formulations of the contact problem, such as penalty or augmented Lagrangian methods, are avoided and a new direct elimination method is proposed. Conserving algorithms are also introduced for the proposed formulation for dynamic contact problems. An assessment of the performance of the resulting formulation is shown in a number of selected benchmark tests and numerical examples, including both quasi-static and dynamic contact problems under full stick friction and frictionless contact conditions. Abstract: Model updating should be correlated with experimental data to ensure that it models the dynamics of the real structure and the updated model predicts the dynamics of a structure more accurately. Considering that the iterative methods for model updating have aroused little public attention, this paper studies an iterative algorithm for quadratic model updating problems which can incorporate the measured modal data into the finite element model to produce an adjusted finite element model on the mass, gyroscopic and stiffness matrices that closely match the experimental modal data. By this method, the best approximation symmetric and skew-symmetric solutions can be obtained by choosing a convergence factor. Numerical example shows that the introduced iterative algorithm is quite efficient. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In this work, mathematical models of physically nonlinear plates and beams made from multimodulus materials are constructed. Our considerations are based on the 3D deformation theory of plasticity, the von Mises plasticity criterion and the method of variable parameters of the theory of elasticity developed by Birger. The proposed theory and computational algorithm enable for solving problems of three types of boundary conditions, edge conditions and arbitrary lateral load distribution. The problem is solved by the finite element method (FEM), and its convergence and the reliability of the results are investigated. Based on numerical experiments, the influence of multimodulus characteristics of the material of the beam and the plate on their stress–strain states under the action of transverse loads is illustrated and discussed. An implementation of the inverse vector Jiles-Atherton model for the solution of non-linear hysteretic finite element problems is presented. The implementation applies the fixed point method with differential reluctivity values obtained from the Jiles-Atherton model. Differential reluctivities are usually computed using numerical differentiation, which is ill-posed and amplifies small perturbations causing large sudden increases or decreases of differential reluctivity values, which may cause numerical problems. A rule based algorithm for conditioning differential reluctivity values is presented. Unwanted perturbations on the computed differential reluctivity values are eliminated or reduced with the aim to guarantee convergence. Details of the algorithm are presented together with an evaluation of the algorithm by a numerical example. The algorithm is shown to guarantee convergence, although the rate of convergence depends on the choice of algorithm parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
