The article presents the archives collected by architectural historian Esther McCoy in the U.S. The papers contain a wide range of documents including research files, drafts, finished texts and working notes, photographs and slides. It also features the pictures of illuminated structures and designs developed by architect-engineer-contractor Felix Candela and architect Juan O'Gorman which is the snail-form tower of the entrance of house in Mexico. She donated her accumulated archives at the Archives of American Art.

This paper is the second installment in a two-part series on the physicality of archival material in the context of the digital age. The first part reviewed key lessons in the history of new technologies that have affected archival practice. Part two will explore a holistic understanding of paper-based knowledge transmission in the context of the digital access movement. The intent is to provide a more expansive context to the shift from a physically, place-based activity to one of ubiquitous access to secondary materials. The investigation emphasizes two notions: archives as thing and archives as experience. Issues of authenticity, evidence, and sensory engagement are seen as potential knowledge elements of original material. Furthermore, physical archives are considered in their environmental context, through physical processes in the embodied act of using, and through their meaning to the user. The purpose of this article is to highlight the tacit, assumed and taken-for-granted aspects of using original archival material to better understand the conversion from physical to digital. The author discusses the influence of archival sources in the development of rhetoric and composition writing. He states that charting the history of this method of writing was the cause of its existence. Some of these archival sources are journals and books, unpublished dissertations, old syllabi, textbooks, university and college catalogs, as well as lecture notes, writing assignments, and student papers. The author says that the archives of Kenneth A. Bruffee, "Brooklyn College Institute for Training Peer Writing Tutors," gives importance to the role of professional gatherings, which includes seminars, conferences, colloquia, workshops, and summer institutes, in the formation of composition studies.

The article discusses the large archive of the papers of David Davies or Lord Davies of Llandinam (1880-1944) which was deposited at the National Library of Wales in 1970 and 1992 with a small group of further papers was added to the collection in July 2012. It states that it is the largest personal archive in the custody of the National Library wherein cataloguing was undertaken by several different archivists that was finally completed in 2017.

The article presents a list of archival resources related to labor history available in the parliamentary papers of the then-colonies of Tasmania and Western Australia from the second half of the 19th century, organized into topical sections such as immigration, convict labor, railways, and public works.

The article offers information on the Canadian scholar Ellen Gillies Cooke and her contributions to Manitoba and Canada's historical record. Topics include her gift of thousands of documents to the Archives of Manitoba which include office records of Manitoba premier John Norquay and a significant amount of her personal research on the Norquays, the mystery of the office documents being in typed form when the premier's office did not have a typewriter, and its implications in archival practice.

The article provides information on Artists' Papers Register, a finding list of archival documents that is related to artists, engravers, wood-engravers and lithographers. The author reveals that in 1987, the Artists' Papers Register has begun with a pilot project at Glasgow University Library and funded by the Getty Grant Program. The Artist' Papers Register is devoted to investigate the holdings of artists' documents that are stored in west of Scotland institutions. The database of the Register can be searched by the names of artists and by several categories. Moreover, it further points out that it is planned that the said Register should be regularly updated so that there will be opportunities to extend its usefulness.

In a follow-up to a pilot study published in 2019, the authors collected student research papers from English Composition II courses at three public comprehensive universities from different regions in the United States to classify and compare the sources selected by students at each institution. Working with a representative sample of 712 bibliographic references, the authors used a research-tested taxonomy called The WHY Method to classify each source by three key attributes--Who wrote each source, How it was edited, and whY it was published. The results of this cross-institutional study indicate that student source selection is affected most powerfully by the variables of which institution a student attends, student age, and whether the student is a first-generation university student. Student GPA, gender, class ranking (freshman, sophomore, and so on), and ethnicity were not statistically predictive factors. This study establishes the importance of institutional context in how students construct authority and provides librarians with a tool that enables them to better understand and describe that context. Unlike scholars in many other disciplines, economists show little organized concern for preserving disciplinary archives. Consider the contrast between the community of mathematicians and the community of economists: the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America have embarked on a joint project to preserve official archives and to advise individuals and groups about the preservation of personal and organization-related papers: these two large organizations have recognized that mathematicians' "personal papers and the records of mathematical institutions and organizations are a source for an understanding of history." Generally, donors are asked to sign an agreement that gives property of the papers to the repository; rarely do repositories accept collections on loan or deposit. Before signing such an agreement, one should become familiar with the repository's policies on availability and publication of the papers. Most repositories are willing to attempt to address any concerns one may have, such as a desire to restrict part of the collection to protect the privacy of others.

How do we know what we know about an organization's history? What methodologies do historians use? I explain and adapt the historical method of source criticism for organizational scholars through the new technique of organizational source criticism. Source criticism is how historians do research in archives. The role of source criticism is to identify, analyse and use bias in historical sources to write reliable historical narratives. Organization source criticism emphasizes the plurality of organizational sources. I capture this plurality through the organizational source criticism matrix, which categorizes organizational archival sources into four types based on their category and modality. Category differentiates between narrative and documentary sources, and modality distinguishes reportative from performative sources. The matrix proposes four distinct forms of source criticism for each type of organizational source and exemplifies these through two academic articles from management and organizational history. The paper encourages researchers to adopt organizational source criticism to create robust organizational historical narratives. It also emphasizes the importance of context, triangulation and colligation in organizational historical research. Organizational source criticism is a new historical methodology adapted to researching sources in organizational archives that aims at establishing the veracity and meaning of organizational archival sources. Digital and spatial techniques, such as reality-based surveying and 3D modelling, have long been used in archaeology. However, in recent years the use of these techniques has gained importance also in the history of architecture, a discipline in which these data can help to interpret traditionally used, but often incomplete, written sources (Tucci et al. 2021; Fiorini et al. 2023).This paper is about an aspect of the eighteenth-century renovations of Palazzo Vecchio. It focuses attention on a small terrace that runs alongside the exterior facade of the Sala dei Cinquecento and to which there is no entrance. The question this paper seeks to answer is: why during eighteenth-century renovations it was decided to exclude the existing entrance to the terrace from the accessible spaces? Using geomatics techniques, it has been possible to identify the location of the enclosed spaces in relation to other parts of the building (Tucci, 2017).In accordance with the criteria of Spatial Humanities, the present research is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach based on the analysis and interpretation of data obtained from archival sources (Archivio Storico Comunale di Firenze, Fototeca Comunale di Firenze, Archivio Centrale di Stato di Roma, Archivio di Stato di Firenze, Gabinetto fotografico degli Uffizi, Catalogo Generale Beni Culturali, Biblioteca Nazionale), the consultation of relevant published iconographic sources in libraries, and the interpretation of 3D data and architectural elements discovered during the onsite survey of the area between the inner and outer southern façades of the Sala dei Cinquecento.The first part of this essay focus on the southern façade of the Sala dei Cinquecento and aims to demonstrate to what extent the Carlo Falconieri's modification altered the general appearance of the façade. In recent decades, there has been a growing number of studies exploring the historical dimensions of the interconnectedness of human societies and the environment. A core approach in this field is historical ecology. We analyzed 544 historical-ecological papers to assess patterns and trends in the field. We found a high degree of interdisciplinarity with a focus on local case studies, of periods of fewer than 500 years, analyzing archival sources through quantitative approaches. The proportion of papers containing management recommendations has increased over time. To make historical ecology globally relevant, more effort should be made to utilize studies across languages, borders and worldviews. We call for high standards regarding the use of social scientific methodologies. Lastly, we argue that fostering longer-term studies and assessing the real-life impact of policy recommendations emerging from historical ecology can help the discipline better contribute solutions to the challenges facing humanity in an uncertain future. Objective: To provide an evaluative and personal overview of the life and contributions of Professor John Senders and to introduce this Special Issue dedicated to his memory. Background: John Senders made many profound contributions to HF/E. These various topics are exemplified by the range of papers which compose the Special Issue. Collectively, these works document and demonstrate the impact of his many valuable research works. Method: The Special Issue serves to summarize Senders' collective body of work as can be extracted from archival sources. This introductory paper recounts a series of remembrances derived from personal relationships, as well as the products of cooperative investigative research. Results: This collective evaluative process documents Senders' evident and deserved status in the highest pantheon of HF/E pioneers. It records his extraordinary life, replete with accounts of his insights and joie de vivre in exploring and explaining the world which surrounded him. Applications: Senders' record of critical contributions provides the example, par excellence, of the successful and fulfilling life in science. Background: Very few researches have been carried out on the Spanish influenza pandemic and its consequences in the territory of Slovakia. Objectives: The paper constitutes an attempt to investigate the second wave of the pandemic between September and December 1918. It aims to reflect on the following questions: when did the outbreak of the pandemic occur in this region?; what measures were taken during the second wave of the Spanish flu in autumn 1918?; to what extent and based on what data can the number of infected and fatalities be determined? Methods: The research is based on the study of archival sources, as well as the local press, and the county periodicals, in which the official number of infections and deaths were published. Results: The first part of the paper is dedicated to the historiographical reflections, and outlines the possible reasons why historiography has not, so far, examined this question. Here it is argued that on the one hand the focus of the Hungarian and the Slovak historiographies were put on presenting the larger political, social, and economic context and consequences of the creation of Czechoslovakia and the history of the Peace Treaty in Trianon, while on the other hand, scholars have to face the lack of accurate statistical data. The second part of the study provides a short overview of the course of the pandemic in Slovakia and try to make estimates on the number of infections and fatalities based on contemporary statistics. Conclusions: Partial data suggest that around 0.5% of the population of Slovakia may have fallen victim to the epidemic. However, the study presents only the current status of the research, and data are not available for all regions of Slovakia at the moment. Therefore, further research is required to map the impact of the world pandemic on Slovakia, in regions that are missing in such analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: During World War II and in its aftermath, Central Europe was exposed to huge migration waves. People of different religions and various mother tongues had to leave their homes and newcomers settled in the abandoned places. This paper focuses on a small town, Medzev, located on the southern edge of Spiš (eastern Slovakia), which was until the end of World War II inhabited mainly by a German-speaking population. Although the region faced emigration waves in the 19th century, it was during and after World War II when local people experienced forced migration on the order of the authorities. Local German-speaking inhabitants were "evacuated" to northern Moravia because of the approaching Red Army in autumn 1944. During the next year they tried to come back home, only to be interned in local concentration camps. Those, who remained in town faced in the first months of 1945 removal to the Soviet Union (USSR). During 1946 and 1947, the inhabitants of Medzev tried to escape from the state-ordered expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia. However, the most important migration flow which changed the linguistic character of the town came only during the 1960s, when the larger metalworking plant Strojsmalt was established in Medzev. The factory offered a wide range of job opportunities that stimulated flows of economic migration of Slovak-, Ruthenian- or Hungarian-speaking workers from neighboring villages. Objectives: While exploring local post-conflict and post-migration settings, this paper focuses on everyday life in the intimate small town community. How was the Medzev population influenced by post-war migration flows? What effects did the economic migration connected with socialist industrializationave on the prevalently German-speaking community? Conclusion: Drawing on archival sources and oral testimonies, this paper aims to show the microperspective of the post-war migration flows and interactions in an east Slovak small town. It claims that the dominance of German speakers in the remote town of Medzev was not ended by the postwar expulsion in late 1940s, but rather by economic migration flows connected with socialist industrialization in following decades. However, the relations between local German speakers with job-seeking Slovak "newcomers" were not conflictual and both groups adapted to each other. This paper argues that in the examined micro space, people were connected mainly through their working experience in the factory Strojsmalt and lived together without major conflicts. The author looks at several sources for the study of studio craft like the Archives of American Art project of the Smithsonian Institution. She stated that the Archives is a source of scholarship materials including original letters, diaries and unpublished writings. She gives an overview of the Nanette L. Laitman Documentation Project for Craft and Decorative Arts in America initiative which aims to record and transcribe more than one hundred oral history interviews to collect the personal papers of artists.

This paper will briefly discuss encoded archival description (EAD) finding aids, the workflow and process involved in encoding finding aids using EAD metadata standard, our institution's current publishing model for EAD finding aids, current EAD metadata enhancement, and new developments in our publishing model for EAD finding aids at Florida State University Libraries. For brevity and within the scope of this paper, FSU Libraries will be referred to as FSU, electronic EAD finding and/or archival finding aid will be referred as EAD or EADs, and locally encoded electronic EAD finding aids inventories will be referred to as EADs @ FSU. Researchers and gatekeepers lack clarity about the circumstances under which using old data to test hypotheses is appropriate or inappropriate. In response to this complex issue, we first define what makes data "old." We then suggest that using old data is justifiable (a) when examining a past event, (b) when recent data are not available, or (c) when the data were collected painstakingly. Scholars should avoid using old data if none of these conditions exist. The p resent research paper aims to investigate the relations between "power" and "places". It tried to find out the ethnic construct of place identity and its attachment to the sense of power. It analyses the questions as, How the ethnic identity of social groups constructs the meaning of "place" and transformed themselves into ethnic places? How do the "places" intervene in the identity of "selves"? This research undertakes Kurdish identity and their imbibed notion in order to contextualize the 'ethnic place' and questions of "selves". In this connection, it studies the ethnic places as the phenomenological product of ethnic and social experiences. It discusses ethnic places and their sense of power within the framework of place identity. The central theme of this paper is the Kurdish identity of Turkey to be placed in the spatial adjustment to which they belong. The image of Kurdistan as a place seems to empower them and ultimately causes their sense of security. The method of research is purely theoretical and descriptive on the bases of spatial-analytic approaches. However, in this research, phenomenological analysis of the concepts of place and experiences are argued with relation to power, place and ethnic identity. The phenomenological experiences of community behavior have been seen with respect to their cognitive relations to the living environment of the Kurdish group. Generally, this study is based on secondary sources and archival materials. A case study of Kurdish ethnic identity assertion is seen with respect to the theoretical applicability of place, power, and security concepts. It analyses Turkish Kurds and their identity assertion in the context of demand for the place, associated with the "power" as well as their cognitive environment and sense of belongingness. Ethnic place emerges in "relative isolation" as ethnic selves differing from other-selves. Hence, the demand for the place by the Kurdish group in Turkey is seen as a preservation of ethnic places to be empowered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The main aim of this paper is to illustrate the importance of avoiding Whig interpretations in historical research. It does so by highlighting examples of what may occur when this is not done. The paper also aims to promote interdisciplinarity, in the form of working with those from other disciplines, as a means to avoid this occurring. Design/methodology/approach: This paper includes an in-depth study of the bookkeeping and financial reporting of two 18th century Portuguese state-sponsored companies using archival sources. The companies were selected because of conflicting insights across disciplines concerning the quality of their bookkeeping and financial reporting – historians have been very critical, while accounting historians have seen little wrong. These differences of opinion have never previously been investigated. The authors demonstrate how information was distributed among the account books and other records of the two companies. The approach adopted enabled a reader to fully understand the recorded economic events. The authors also present and explain the procedures, criteria and accounting terminology used in their annual reports. Findings: This paper demonstrates how easy is to inadvertently adopt a Whig interpretation of accounting history when the focus of interest is something of which the principal researcher has insufficient understanding or expertise. It also illustrates how important it is to embrace interdisciplinarity by working with those from other discipline to avoid doing so. Research limitations/implications: The conclusions from the case study are company-specific and cannot be generalised beyond those companies. However, the implications of this study go beyond the companies in its illustration of the importance of fully understanding historical evidence within its own context. Originality/value: This paper unveils primary archival sources never previously presented in the literature. It also contributes to the literature by providing an evidence-based justification for the calls previously made to accounting historians to study accounting in its social context and engage with historians from other disciplines. The paper discusses official and Indigenous views of the Khanty and Forest Nenets uprising against the Soviets, known as the Kazym War (1931-1934). The rebellion is well documented in archival sources and covered by scholarly research, popular essays, and novels. Almost a century after the uprising, Indigenous narratives about the uprising are still circulating in local communities. Specifically, this paper addresses selected episodes of the Kazym War reflected both in official and Indigenous narratives. I focus on the analysis of diverse modes of narrating hybrid knowledge produced in a contact zone, and the mythic imagination of shamans shaping narratives about the uprising. Here, I argue that perceptions of Indigenous history sometimes adopt and reproduce the dominant discourse about the uprising, but link to the official story predominantly by rejecting it and establishing autonomous discussions. In this paper we present and analyse the histamena (gold coins) of Romanos III. Argyros found in the territory of the former Hungarian Kingdom. The majority of these coins are known from literary and archival sources. Only the coins from Pétermonostora (County Bács-Kiskun/H) and Székesfehérvár (County Fejér/H) had got to museums and about the others only descriptions are available. Most coins are scattered finds but we have information about some nomisma of Romanos III. Argyros from the Etyek-Bóthpuszta hoard (County Fejér/H). Here we'll analyse their role outside the Byzantine Empire as compared to the coin circulation in the medieval Hungarian Kingdom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The principle of equality proclaimed by the Edict of Gulhane (tur. Gülhane Hatt-ı Şerîf) in 1839 resulted in many changes in the socio-political sphere of the Ottoman society, but also with several legal acts regarding education issued by the Ottoman authorities. The Constitution of the Ottoman Empire from 1876 proclaimed equality between all citizens of the state regardless of ethnicity and religion. Even though, relations between the Albanian and Serbian populations in the Kosovo Vilayet were tense in all aspects of socio-political spheres. The representatives of Albanians, as a majority in the vilayet, defended the status of Islam as a dominant religion and Christianity as a religion of slaves (rayah). As the Ottoman authorities issued many legal acts regarding formal basic education in Islamic primary schools (mekteb) during the second half of the 19th century, tensions and misunderstandings between the Serbian and Albanian populations increased. This paper analyzes relations between Serbs and Albanians in the Vilayet of Kosovo in 1878-1912 in the area of implementation of the right to primary education for both communities as this issue has not been researched in detail until now. Our research is based on interdisciplinary approach to the subject and the use of primary archival sources of the Ottoman and Serbian provenance, as well as the relevant literature. Recovering additional historical weather observations from known archival sources will improve the understanding of how the climate is changing and enable detailed examination of unusual events within the historical record. The UK National Meteorological Archive recently scanned more than 66,000 paper sheets containing 5.28 million hand‐written monthly rainfall observations taken across the UK and Ireland between 1677 and 1960. Only a small fraction of these observations were previously digitally available for climate scientists to analyse. More than 16,000 volunteer citizen scientists completed the transcription of these sheets of observations during early 2020 using the RainfallRescue.org website, built using the Zooniverse platform. A total of 3.34 million observations from more than 6000 locations have so far been quality controlled and made openly available. This has increased the total number of monthly rainfall observations that are available for this time period and region by a factor of six. The newly rescued observations will enable longer and much improved reconstructions of past variations in rainfall across the British and Irish Isles, including for periods of significant flooding and drought. Specifically, this data should allow the official gridded monthly rainfall reconstructions for the UK to be extended back to 1836, and even earlier for some regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The research question this paper aims at answering is the following: In an ontology-driven annotation system, can the information extracted from external resources (namely, Wikidata) provide users with useful suggestions in the characterization of entities used for the annotation of documents from historical archives? The context of the research is the PRiSMHA project, in which the main goal is the development of a proof-of-concept prototype ontology-driven system for semantic metadata generation. The assumption behind this effort is that an effective access to historical archives needs a rich semantic knowledge, relying on a domain ontology, that describes the content of archival resources. In the paper, we present a new feature of the annotation system: when characterizing a new entity (e.g., a person), some properties describing it are automatically pre-filled in, and more complex semantic representations (e.g., events the entity is involved in) are suggested; both kinds of suggestions are based on information retrieved from Wikidata. In the paper, we describe the automatic algorithm devised to support the definition of the mappings between the Wikidata semantic model and the PRiSMHA ontology, as well as the process used to extract information from Wikidata and to generate suggestions based on the defined mappings. Finally, we discuss the results of a qualitative evaluation of the suggestions, which provides a positive answer to the initial research question and indicates possible improvements. This paper discusses the issues associated with conservation of selected elements of the existing military object. The subject was presented on the case of Fort Swoszowice, which is the late 19th century defensive structure recently renovated and adapted to new function. Fort Swoszowice belongs to the system of fortifications that were built in concentric rings around the city of Cracow during Austro-Hungarian monarchy. After decades of neglection, the fortifications are getting more attention as important parts of the cultural heritage of the city. One group of problems associated with conservation of the structure addressed the technical condition of the materials: concrete, brick and metal elements, which showed the signs of deterioration due to lack of proper conservation. The other group of problems were connected with military purpose of the building. The descriptive methodology was chosen as the most appropriate for the case study. The archival maps and manuals were studied in order to get knowledge on the conditions specific for the military structure. Furthermore, the conservation and restoration procedures are described, with emphasis on the factors that determine the identity of the building. Finally, the result is presented, which show that conservation based on diagnosis of the existing conditions and recognition of the archival resources can help in restoration in accordance with the original state and adaptation to a new function. This paper aims to expose the role of Soviet medical expeditions in the construction of modern healthcare in the Tuvinian People's Republic. Based on archival sources, the study traces the activities of four successive medical teams working in Tuva from 1928 to 1936. The first expedition thoroughly reconnoitered the health situation in the republic, picking out the most troublesome areas, diseases, and spheres of life. The ones that followed consolidated the initiative of the first team, turning healthcare in Tuva into a state affair and an international venture with political undertones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article focuses on the future of sociology archive as a discipline. The major U.S. university libraries now go to extraordinary lengths and expense to collect the papers of writers, even many who as yet have not been categorically identified as important. There is a serious lesson in this-one might even say, a vital one-for sociology as it confronts an uncertain future. As everyone of a certain age will recall, the saga of Roots, in book and television formats, single-handedly gave American blacks a collective sense of historical importance that up to that point was absent from mass culture. The new Holocaust Museum in Washington is the most eloquent and emotionally wracking contemporary expression of historical memory for public consumption on a grand scale. Other examples can be found at every juncture of the "culture wars" that have been raging in the United States since the 1960s. Every politically self-aware group is supposed to venerate its real or imagined past, both at individual and collective levels, not only because such joint expressions enhance self-conceptions but also owing to the strategic advantage.

This paper deals with the specifics and working procedures for 3D digital reconstructions of defunct and altered buildings of vernacular architecture. Primarily, the resulting 3D models are intended to serve for general lay public in order to present and popularize vernacular architecture and for educational activities. Secondly, they can be used by professional public for the same purposes. The models are based on archival sources - archival 2D metric survey documentation (drawings and photographs), written sources. Another requirement is the possibility of presentation on the internet within a parallel developing web platform. The aim of this article is to contribute to the presentation of the Hungarian Institute of Jerusalem by analyzing records in the Hungarian National Archives. That is the reason why this paper is based on foreign affairs ministry materials found in the Hungarian National Archives. As far as secondary literature is concerned, research work by Attila Novák and József N. Szabó is regarded as unavoidable. However, besides the aforementioned resources, a comprehensive work has not been created on the history of the Hungarian Institute in Jerusalem so far. This article is an attempt to fill this research gap. The Institute played an important role in the history of post WWII Hungarian - Israeli relations. The cold war and the bipolar world created a completely new (geopolitical) situation in Central-Eastern Europe as well as in the Middle East after 1945. The victorious Soviet Union spread its influence on European territories east of the Elbe River, and due to this Soviet presence, the political, social and economic structure of these small countries - such as Hungary - located in the region were transformed in a radical way. Consequently, their foreign policy and cultural orientation naturally changed, or at least a massive shift took place. Until the middle of the 20th century, German culture had traditionally played a predominant role in Hungary. In addition, English, French and Italian influence was considered to be significant as well. Compared to them, Russian, and later Soviet cultural influence had no significant impact, but when taking foreign policy into account, the situation was completely different. Due to the geographical location of Hungary, its huge eastern neighbour, the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union had been regarded as highly influential. In the (post-war) new world order, however, as far as determination of Hungarian foreign affairs is concerned, the country was under Soviet hegemony. Germany as a sovereign power in the West ceased to exist for decades. Moreover, Germany itself became divided by two superpowers: between the United States and the Soviet Union until the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall, a symbol of the cold war. The Ottoman Empire that had dominated the South for almost half a millennium fell apart during the First World War. It was replaced by the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and later Yugoslavia. The federation led by Tito, however, did not have any attempts expand like the Turkish did unless Tito's ideas to create a Balkan federation is regarded as an attempt to conquer. In addition, Tito became one of the leading figures of The Non-Aligned Movement in the 1950s. Thus, he tried to keep a degree of independence from the competing superpowers of the Soviet Union and the United States. Due to its geographical distance, and because of agreements in Yalta and Potsdam, the United States retained a presence in Central-Eastern Europe, albeit-as a counter pole. Well-functioning/Fine Hungarian - Israeli relations would have been able to balance the growing foreign political and cultural hegemony of the Soviet Union after the Second World War, as ibid. However, the Middle East - where two classic Imperial powers, Great Britain and France, had taken control - became a scene of huge transformation. The British and the French gradually retreated from the region and they were replaced by the United States. At the same time the United States made attempts to spread its influence. Thus, this region became a battlefield of the super powers' rivalry. The Hungarian Institute was established in these complicated circumstances. It existed between 1946 and 1948 and was led by Tibor Scher, the historian and hebraist. The People's Republic of Hungary did not have any formal relations with the State of Israel until 1950 when István Romhányi was appointed to be Chargé d'Affaires of Hungary in Tel-Aviv. Although Israel - formerly known as Mandatory Palestine - had a community of about 100,000 Hungarian-speaking residents, their interests were not represented. The Institute tried to take care of them but its primary mission involved the development of Hungarian - Israeli cultural relationships. However, that mission failed because of internal and external circumstances. Namely, the first Arab-Israeli war broke out in May 1948; and the Hungarian authorities did not provide a wholehearted support for the Institute. This article aims to highlight how decisive a role the Institution could have had - if it had remained. It could have opened a gateway for Hungary during Soviet and American hegemony - even if that gate would not have been very big. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the current paper is to assess the Bulgarian reflections on T. G. Masaryk’s death in 1937. I am going to apply the theoretical approach of the German historian Reinhart Koselleck, who asserted that the „political cult of the dead“ should be explored in a certain historical context and the commemoration of the „dead hero“ was intended to reconstruct historical events and images. Therefore, before approaching my main objective, I will make a brief overview of the Bulgarian image of TGM in the context of the Bulgarian-Czechoslovak political relationship during the interwar period. I rely mainly on Bulgarian and Czechoslovak periodical press as well as on archival sources, published documents, and secondary literature, related to the subject. The memorial space emerges as aterrain of symbolic legitimizationofmemories and images of the past with a presentist vocation, which seeks to modulate the representations of the time lived. The political uses of the past are not a novelty and collective memory has regulated the memories of communities for centuries thanks to the performance of different frameworks or, in Nora's words, memory spaces. This paper attempts to approach the mechanisms of memorial reproduction, in order to explain why Cuba has become the repository of a Napoleonic memory and at the same time the disseminator of the golden legend of the Great Corsican. From collectionism, operated at different scales, to the pantheonization of a legendary image with the creation of a public museum, the text also aims to explain the factors that have encouraged the reproduction of the Napoleonic myth in Caribbean waters. The research relies on a diversity of sources ranging from the latest theoretical approaches to the subject to archival sources, files of pieces from museum collections, press of the time and audiovisual media. The complexity of a phenomenon such as memory and, in particular, Napoleonic memory, makes this interdisciplinary approach necessary, combining efforts from history, sociology, the arts and collectionism, to understand the origin and the plenitude of a phenomenon that has its roots in the nineteenth century.
