Composites consisting of iron aluminide and iron silicide phases were studied in this work. Powders of iron aluminide and iron silicide were prepared by mechanical alloying separately. Subsequently, they were blended in three different proportions and sintered by the SPS method under various conditions. After sintering, the composites are composed of FeAl and amounts of other silicides (Fe5Si3 and Fe3Si). Ternary Fe–Al–Si phases were not determined, even though their presence was predicted by DFT calculations. This disagreement was explained by steric factors, i.e., by differences in the space lattice of the present phases. Hardness and tribological properties were measured on composites with various weight ratios of iron aluminide and iron silicide. The results show that sintered silicides with the matrix composed of iron aluminide reach comparable hardness to tool steels. The composites with higher mass ratios of iron aluminide than silicide have higher hardness and better tribological properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ferromanganese nodules represent an industrially untapped source of valuable metals (Mn, Cu, Ni, Ti, Co) but are still just the object of scientific research. In comparison with already utilized rocks, deep-sea deposits are too hard to reach for their full-scale mining to be profitable. Despite of this, current marine engineering allows us to conduct complete exploration and obtain mineral samples. We can already now develop low-cost methods for subsequent processing in anticipation of improved and safer future mining technology. But in what form would be the final product the most applicable? In our study, we reduced the pyro metallurgical pretreatment of raw nodules to two simple steps: roasting and aluminothermic reduction. Then we added a product, manganese-based alloy, to pure aluminum as a new alloying additive. As a reference for experimental alloys, commercial cast AlMn10 master alloy was chosen. The tested samples were prepared using two advanced operations of powder metallurgy: melt-spinning and spark plasma sintering (SPS). Microstructure was described in detail, tribological and selected mechanical properties were measured, and a comparative analysis was conducted. New additive gradually improved properties of alloys to a level close to 3xxx industrial alloys with its increasing percentage in pure aluminum. Measured values did not surpass the referent AlMn10, but there was not recorded any adverse impact associated with the origin of alloying mixture. • New aluminum alloys with the natural additive – reduced deep-sea nodules – modified by rapid solidification. • Extremely fine-grained microstructure with the content of supersaturated matrix regions. • Improved mechanical and tribological properties comparable to commercial alloys of 3xxx group. • Uncommonly high plasticity. This work is devoted to the preparation of alloys based on intermetallic compounds in the Ti-Al-Si system by powder metallurgy using mechanical alloying and the spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. The aim was to describe the formation of intermetallic phases during mechanical alloying of TiAl15Si15 (wt-%) alloy and to consolidate the powder prepared by optimised conditions. Phase composition, microstructure and hardness of compacted alloy were determined. Four hours of mechanical alloying is sufficient time for preparation of pure elements free material composed only of intermetallic phases. After consolidation, the TiAl15Si15 alloy has a homogeneous structure composed of silicide (Ti5Si3) in aluminide (TiAl) matrix. The hardness of the material reaches 865 ± 42 HV 5. Due to the lack of mineral resources, unconventional raw materials have to be considered. In this work, the use of reduced deep-sea nodules from Clarion-Clippertion Fracture Zone of Pacific Ocean was tested as the natural mixture of alloying elements for aluminum alloys. The nodules were reduced by aluminothermic process without the extraction of individual elements. As the technology for the manufacture of the alloys, the powder metallurgy comprising mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering was applied. The produced Al-Mn based alloys are characterized by uncommon spherical morphology of Al-Mn intermetallics, which leads to a significant ductility even in the case of high total amount of additives (up to 20 wt%). The wear resistance of the alloys strongly increases with growing amount of the reduced deep-sea nodules. • New aluminum alloys with reduced deep-sea nodules prepared by powder metallurgy. • Unique rounded morphology of intermetallics was obtained. • Improved strength compared with common Al-Mn alloys. • Reduced deep sea nodules improve tribological properties of aluminum. Abstract: This work is devoted to the preparation of ultrafine material based on Al–Cu–Fe quasicrystalline phase by powder metallurgy using mechanical alloying and Spark Plasma Sintering. The dependence of microstructure and phase composition of powders on the conditions of mechanical alloying was described. It was found that the Al60Cu30Fe10 quasicrystalline phase forms directly already after 2 h of milling under optimized conditions. The stability of this quasicrystalline phase was studied at various temperatures of Spark Plasma Sintering compaction process. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Novel high-entropy (multi-principal elements) alloy based on Fe-Al-Si-Ni-Ti in equimolar proportions has been developed. The alloy powder obtained by mechanical alloying is composed of orthorhombic FeTiSi phase with the admixture of B2 FeAl. During spark plasma sintering of this powder, the FeSi phase is formed and the amount of FeAl phase increases at the expense of the FeTiSi phase. The material is characterized by a high compressive strength (approx. 1500 MPa) at room temperature, being brittle. At 800 °C, the alloy is plastically deformable, having a yield strength of 459 MPa. The wear resistance of the material is very good, comparable to the tool steel. During the wear test, the spallation of the FeSi particles from the wear track was observed locally. Powder metallurgy is a group of advanced processes for the synthesis, processing, and shaping of various kinds of materials. Initially inspired by ceramics processing, the methodology comprising of the production of a powder and its transformation to a compact solid product has attracted great attention since the end of World War II. At present, there are many technologies for powder production (e.g., gas atomization of the melt, chemical reduction, milling, and mechanical alloying) and its consolidation (e.g., pressing and sintering, hot isostatic pressing, and spark plasma sintering). The most promising ones can achieve an ultra-fine or nano-grained structure of the powder, and preserve it during consolidation. Among these methods, mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering play a key role. This Special Issue gives special focus to the advancement of mechanical alloying, spark plasma sintering and self-propagating high-temperature synthesis methods, as well as to the role of these processes in the development of new materials. Melting metallurgy is still the most frequently used and simplest method for the processing of metallic materials. Some of the materials (especially intermetallics) are very difficult to prepare by this method due to the high melting points, poor fluidity, or formation of cracks and pores after casting. This article describes the processing of Ti-Al-Si alloys by arc melting, and shows the microstructure, phase composition, hardness, fracture toughness, and compression tests of these alloys. These results are compared with the same alloys prepared by powder metallurgy by the means of a combination of mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. Ti-Al-Si alloys processed by melting metallurgy are characterized by a very coarse structure with central porosity. The phase composition is formed by titanium aluminides and titanium silicides, which are full of cracks. Ti-Al-Si alloys processed by the powder metallurgy route have a relatively homogeneous fine-grained structure with higher hardness. However, these alloys are very brittle. On the other hand, the fracture toughness of arc-melted samples is immeasurable using Palmqvist's method because the crack is stopped by a large area of titanium aluminide matrix. FeAlSi intermetallics are materials with promising high-temperature mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. Nevertheless, their production by standard metallurgical processes is complicated. In this study, preparation of powders by mechanical alloying and properties of the samples compacted by spark plasma sintering was studied. Various initial feedstock materials were mixed to prepare the material with the same chemical composition. Time of mechanical alloying leading to complete homogenization of powders was estimated based on the microstructure observations, results of XRD and indentation tests. Microstructure, phase composition, hardness and fracture toughness of sintered samples was studied and compared with the properties of powders before the sintering process. It was found that independently of initial feedstock powder, the resulting phase composition was the same (Fe3Si + FeSi). The combination of hard initial powders required the longest milling time, but it led to the highest values of fracture toughness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fe–Al–Si alloys have been previously reported as an interesting alternative to common high-temperature materials. This work aimed to improve the properties of FeAl20Si20 alloy (in wt.%) by the application of powder metallurgy process consisting of ultrahigh-energy mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. The material consisted of Fe3Si, FeSi, and Fe3Al2Si3 phases. It was found that the alloy exhibits an anomalous behaviour of yield strength and ultimate compressive strength around 500 °C, reaching approximately 1100 and 1500 MPa, respectively. The results also demonstrated exceptional wear resistance, oxidation resistance, and corrosion resistance in water-based electrolytes. The tested manufacturing process enabled the fracture toughness to be increased ca. 10 times compared to the cast alloy of the same composition. Due to its unique properties, the material could be applicable in the automotive industry for the manufacture of exhaust valves, for wear parts, and probably as a material for selected aggressive chemical environments. A new strategy was applied to develop nano-quasicrystalline phase in well-known AlNiCo ternary system. This approach was based on electroless Ni-P plating of the starting powders and subsequent ball milling in a protective atmosphere without additional annealing or sintering processes. Microstructural evolution and phase transformation of both raw and coated particles were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. After 360 min of mechanical alloying, the peaks demonstrating the formation of nano-quasicrystalline phase appeared in XRD pattern of the coated powders, while those in mechanically alloyed raw powders remained mostly unchanged. The formation of nano-quasicrystalline phase in the vicinity of the primary elements was also confirmed by the corresponding selected area diffraction patterns, and images generated by transmission electron microscope (TEM). Fe-Al-Si alloys have been recently developed in order to obtain excellent high-temperature mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. However, their production by conventional metallurgical processes is problematic. In this work, an innovative processing method, based on ultra-high energy mechanical alloying, has been tested for the preparation of these alloys. It has been found that the powders of low-silicon alloys (up to 10 wt. %) consist of FeAl phase supersaturated by Si after mechanical alloying. Fe2Al5 phase forms as a transient phase at the initial stage of mechanical alloying. The alloy containing 20 wt. % of Si and 20 wt. % of Al is composed mostly of iron silicides (Fe3Si and FeSi) and FeAl ordered phase. Thermal stability of the mechanically alloyed powders was studied in order to predict the sintering behavior during possible compaction via spark plasma sintering or other methods. The formation of Fe2Al5 phase and Fe3Si or Fe2Al3Si3 phases was detected after annealing depending on the alloy composition. • Ti-Al-Si-X (X˭Co, Cr, Fe, Mo, Nb, Ni) alloys prepared using mechanical alloying and Spark Plasma Sintering. • Alloys have fine-grained and homogeneous microstructure with low porosity. • Alloyed elements increased hardness and compressive strength values. Intermetallic alloys based on Ti-Al-Si system are significant for their excellent high-temperature properties, especially for resistance against oxidation and for achieving good mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. The main problem of these materials is high brittleness at room temperature. In the previous work, selected alloying elements were added into the Ti-Al-Si alloys prepared by reactive sintering, but the properties did not meet the requirements for subsequent use in the automotive or aerospace industry, since the materials had a very porous microstructure. Here, the addition of cobalt, chromium, iron, molybdenum, niobium and nickel into the TiAl15Si15 alloy prepared by mechanical alloying and Spark Plasma Sintering is tested and it is expected to improve the mechanical and high-temperature properties. In this paper, the Ti-Al-Si alloys have been assessed on basis of microstructure, phase composition, mechanical and tribological properties, such as hardness, fracture toughness and compressive strength. Cyclic oxidation tests were performed for 400 h at the temperatures of 800 and 1000 °C. The cyclic oxidation tests simulate industrial processes, where the material is alternately exposed to elevated temperature and subsequent cooling (eg, engine components). The FeAl20Si20 alloy was prepared by a combination of short-term mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. The processing parameters either of the mechanical alloying or spark plasma sintering were optimized to yield the maximal mechanical properties of the alloy. For the mechanical alloying, two amounts of powders batch (5 g or 20 g) were compared. The spark plasma sintering regimes combined pre-pressing prior heating and vice versa, direct and pulse current flow. The MA + SPS alloys exhibited ultrafine-grained microstructure composed of FeSi, Fe 3 Si and Fe 3 Al 2 Si 3 phases (with an average crystallite size of approximately 30 nm) with a presence of randomly distributed Al 2 O 3 particles (with diameters ranging from 5 to 100 nm). The FeSi, Fe 3 Si phases were supersaturated by Al, which resulted in an increase of lattice parameters. The hardness of the compact alloys reached up to approximately 1100 HV 0.1 for both the powder batches. The 20 g samples showed a standard deviation nearly half the of 5 g powder batches and the 20 g prepared by a regime combining pre-pressing prior heating up to consolidation temperature using pulse current flow resulted in the highest compressive strength of 2008 MPa. Combination of pre-pressing prior heating-up also reduced the increase of the Fe 3 Al 2 Si 3 phase weight fraction especially in the 5 g alloys that otherwise had a tendency to microstructural coarsening.
