To address the challenges of integrating ever-increasing renewable energy generation such as wind power and photovoltaic (PV) to the power system concerned, the wind-PV-thermal-bundled (WPTB) transmission mode could be employed to mitigate the intermittent power output from wind and PV units. In this work, based on the mathematical models of thermal generation units, wind turbines and PV units, the WPTB transmission system model is developed. Each load demand is modeled as a random variable under various operating conditions of the concerned power system. The Lyapunov linearization method is used to obtain the system matrix of each operation mode, and then all eigenvalues of the system can be attained. According to the generator participation factor, the oscillation modes of the power system are classified. The eigenvalue and damping ratio of each oscillation mode are employed to formulate the objective function of the optimal strategy for enhancing probabilistic small-signal stability, and the particle swarm optimization algorithm is used for global optimization. The secure operation of the power system can be ensured in a wider range by the designed optimization strategy in this work. In the context of modern power system development to support the evolution towards green energy and carbon-neutral emission goals, many existing problems and even challenges demand new technical solutions. In recent years, decentralized blockchain technology has been employed to address some problems in power systems, and many papers have been published. In this paper, the concept of blockchain is first introduced. A brief survey of the existing publications regarding the applications of blockchain in power systems, including power system dispatching, microgrid operation, energy trading, electricity trading settlement, transmission, and distribution system operation, is then carried out. In addition, several application scenarios of blockchain technology in power systems are also introduced. Through the discussion, we found that we still need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages, overcome its leakage, and bring its value into play if we apply blockchain technology in modern power systems in support of zero carbon goals. With the ever-increasing penetration level of renewable generation sources, a modern power system is facing more inevitable uncertainties that could lead to weakly damped oscillations. Detecting coherency among synchronous generators is one of the key steps of situational awareness for a given power system with a very high level of renewable penetration. In this paper, a wide-area measurement system (WAMS) based coherency detection algorithm employing the kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) and clustering analysis based on affinity propagation (AP) is proposed for a power system with extensive penetration of renewable generation sources. First, several trajectory similarity indexes are presented for determining the similarity between the trajectories of any two generators in the center of inertia coordinate. Second, a KPCA-based method is presented to integrate the trajectory similarity indexes for addressing the correlations among multiple indexes. Next, the AP-based clustering analysis method is utilized to detect the coherency among synchronous generators without the need of prespecifying the number of clusters. Finally, Southern China power system and a part of northern China power system with Zhangbei wind farms included, both with very high levels of renewable generation penetration, are utilized to demonstrate the proposed WAMS-based coherency detection methodology, and the application to actual Guangdong power system in south China to verify the applicability and practicality. Seven centrality indexes are first presented for identifying important nodes with topological features of a complex network and electrical characteristics of a power system considered. Then, a criteria importance through intercriteria correlation-based multi-index decision-making method, in which entropy and the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient are integrated for reflecting the differences and correlations among multiple indexes, respectively, is presented to comprehensively identify the importance degrees of nodes in a given power grid. Finally, the proposed indexes and method are applied to actual Guangdong power system in China, and the results are compared with those attained by single-attribute and multi-attribute evaluation methods. The ever-increasing penetration of wind power integration into a power system can produce significant impacts on the operation of an interconnected power system. As the major energy conversion technology for large wind turbines, the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) will play an important role in future power systems. Hence, the impacts of the DFIG on the low-frequency oscillations of interconnected power systems have become an important issue with extensive concerns. This paper examines the impacts of several factors, including the DFIG transmission distance, tie-line power of the interconnected system, DFIG capacity, with/without a power system stabilizer (PSS), on the low frequency oscillation characteristic of an interconnected power system using both eigenvalue analysis and dynamic simulations. To investigate the effects of these factors on the interarea oscillation mode, case studies are carried out on two two-area interconnected power systems, and some conclusions are obtained. It has become more and more demanding to investigate the impacts of wind farms on power system operation as ever-increasing penetration levels of wind power have the potential to bring about a series of dynamic stability problems for power systems. This paper undertakes such an investigation through investigating the small signal and transient stabilities of power systems that are separately integrated with three types of wind turbine generators (WTGs), namely the squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG), the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), and the permanent magnet generator (PMG). To examine the effects of these WTGs on a power system with regard to its stability under different operating conditions, a selected synchronous generator (SG) of the well-known Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC three-unit nine-bus system and an eight-unit 24-bus system is replaced in turn by each type of WTG with the same capacity. The performances of the power system in response to the disturbances are then systematically compared. Specifically, the following comparisons are undertaken: (1) performances of the power system before and after the integration of the WTGs; and (2) performances of the power system and the associated consequences when the SCIG, DFIG, or PMG are separately connected to the system. Abstract: Traditional analytic models for power system fault diagnosis are usually formulated as an unconstrained 0–1 integer programming problem. The key issue of the models is to seek the fault hypothesis that minimizes the discrepancy between the actual and the expected states of the concerned protective relays and circuit breakers. The temporal information of alarm messages has not been well utilized in these methods, and as a result, the diagnosis results may be not unique and hence indefinite, especially when complicated and multiple faults occur. In order to solve this problem, this paper presents a novel analytic model employing the temporal information of alarm messages along with the concept of related path. The temporal relationship among the actions of protective relays and circuit breakers, and the different protection configurations in a modern power system can be reasonably represented by the developed model, and therefore, the diagnosed results will be more definite under different circumstances of faults. A flood of alarm messages in an automatic digital substation makes the monitoring task a significant challenge for the operators in a remote control center, especially under fault scenarios. An online intelligent alarm-processing system is developed based on the architecture of the digital substation. First, real-time alarms are classified according to the IEC 61850 standard in order to provide synthesized and organized alarms for the alarm-processing procedure in the next step. Then, a new and systematic alarm-processing approach for digital substations is developed. Two modules (i.e., the generation of candidate hypotheses and the truth evaluation for the hypotheses) are included in the developed approach, and these two modules are operating in parallel in online implementation. This approach could not only determine the fault/disturbance cause but also the missing or false alarms as well as the causes of the false alarms. According to actual application requirements, an online intelligent alarm-processing system is developed and applied in the Xingguo substation—the first digital substation in Jiangxi Province, China. The alarm-processing problem is to interpret a large number of alarms under stress conditions, such as faults or disturbances, by providing summarized and synthesized information instead of a flood of raw alarm data. Alarm timestamps represent the temporal relationship among event occurrences and consist of rich and useful information for alarm processing. However, the temporal information has not been well utilized in existing alarm-processing methods. The temporal constraint network (TCN) is a type of directed acyclic graph suitable for representing temporal logics. Based on TCN, a new analytic model is developed for alarm processing with temporal information taken into account. Three major modules are included in the developed approach or alarm processor (i.e., alarm selection, event analysis, and result evaluation). In the alarm selection module, reported alarms are divided into related groups. The function of the event analysis module is to find out what events cause the reported alarms and to estimate when these events happen. The result evaluation module is used to identify abnormal or missing alarms. This paper addresses the integrated planning problem of a power network and the charging infrastructure of electric vehicles (EVs) for enhancing power system resilience under various extreme weather scenarios. The planning methodology determines the optimal joint expansion decisions while modeling the benchmark system operation under the n − k resilience criterion. The proposed coordinated planning framework is a robust two-stage/tri-level mixed-integer optimization model. The proposed robust joint planning model includes the construction plan in the first level, identifying the worst-case scenario in the second level, and optimizing the operation cost and load shedding in the final level. To solve this model, a duality-based column and constraint generation (D-CCG) algorithm is developed. Using case studies, both the robust sole transmission planning and joint planning models are demonstrated on the IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 118-bus power systems. Numerical simulations of the benchmark systems validate the effectiveness of the developed framework and the efficiency of the proposed solution approach. The well-developed unified power flow controller (UPFC) has demonstrated its capability in providing voltage support and improving power system stability. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the capability of the UPFC in mitigating oscillations in a wind farm integrated power system by employing eigenvalue analysis and dynamic time-domain simulation approaches. For this purpose, a power oscillation damping controller (PODC) of the UPFC is designed for damping oscillations caused by disturbances in a given interconnected power system, including the change in tie-line power, the changes of wind power outputs, and others. Simulations are carried out for two sample power systems, i.e., a four-machine system and an eight-machine system, for demonstration. Numerous eigenvalue analysis and dynamic time-domain simulation results confirm that the UPFC equipped with the designed PODC can effectively suppress oscillations of power systems under various disturbance scenarios. The ever-increasing penetration of wind power generation and plug-in electric vehicles introduces stochastic continuous disturbances to the power system. This paper proposes an analytical approach to analyze the influence of stochastic continuous disturbances on power system small signal stability. The noise-to-state stability (NSS) and NSS Lyapunov function (NSS-LF) are adopted for stability analysis with respect to the magnitude of uncertainties in a power system. The power system is modeled as a set of stochastic differential equations (SDEs). The supremum of the norm of the covariance is employed to characterize the influence of magnitudes of uncertainties on the power system. Then the relationship between the magnitudes of stochastic variations and probabilistic stability is explicitly identified by NSS. The proposed method can assess the stochastic stability of the power system by checking some algebraic expressions. Hence, it has high computation efficiency compared with the well-established Monte Carlo based method. Besides, since the magnitudes of the stochastic variations are integrated into the definition of the stochastic stability, the proposed method provides theoretical explanations for the impacts of uncertainties. When a fault occurs in a section or a component of a given power system, the malfunctioning of protective relays (PRs) and circuit breakers (CBs), and the false and missing alarms, may manifestly complicate the fault diagnosis procedure. It is necessary to develop a methodologically appropriate framework for this application. As a branch of stochastic programming, the well-developed chance-constrained programming approach provides an efficient way to solve programming problems fraught with uncertainties. In this work, a novel fault diagnosis analytic model is developed with the ability of accommodating the malfunctioning of PRs and CBs, as well as the false and/or missing alarms. The genetic algorithm combined with Monte Carlo simulations are then employed to solve the optimization model. The feasibility and efficiency of the developed model and method are verified by a real fault scenario in an actual power system. In addition, it is demonstrated by simulation results that the computation speed of the developed method meets the requirements for the on-line fault diagnosis of actual power systems. The fuzzy Petri net is a promising and efficient approach that can tackle the complexities of power system fault diagnosis. In this work, the temporal constraint between event occurrences in power systems is investigated. Then, it is introduced to a fuzzy Petri net (FPN) for fault diagnosis. The temporal attributes are assigned to the propositions in the Petri net, so that temporal information can be taken into account, which makes the true hypothesis distinguishable from the false ones. The modified matrix execution algorithm can enhance computational efficiency, with a “weighted average” operation included to improve the fault-tolerance. The developed model possesses a modular structure, which is easy to adapt to topology changes, and to accommodate modern protection schemes. A preliminary evaluation of the operating performance of protective devices is also carried out after fault section identification. The testing results on the IEEE 14-bus power system and Zhejiang provincial power system in China demonstrate that the developed model is correct and efficient. Compared with three existing fault diagnosis methods, the proposed one has stronger fault-tolerance with lower computational cost, and is suitable for on-line fault diagnosis in large-scale power systems.
