Cell fusion is a fundamental phenomenon observed in all eukaryotes. Cells can exchange resources such as molecules or organelles during fusion. In this paper, we ask whether a cell can also transfer an adaptive response to a fusion partner. We addressed this question in the unicellular slime mould Physarum polycephalum, in which cell-cell fusion is extremely common. Slime moulds are capable of habituation, a simple form of learning, when repeatedly exposed to an innocuous repellent, despite lacking neurons and comprising only a single cell. In this paper, we present a set of experiments demonstrating that slime moulds habituated to a repellent can transfer this adaptive response by cell fusion to individuals that have never encountered the repellent. In addition, we show that a slime mould resulting from the fusion of a minority of habituated slime moulds and a majority of unhabituated ones still shows an adaptive response to the repellent. Finally, we further reveal that fusion must last a certain time to ensure an effective transfer of the behavioural adaptation between slime moulds. Our results provide strong experimental evidence that slime moulds exhibit transfer of learned behaviour during cell fusion and raise the possibility that similar phenomena may occur in other cell-cell fusion systems. Fourteen years ago our team demonstrated for the first time that ExMVs carry functional RNA species and proteins from one cell to another, an observation that opened up the new research field of horizontal transfer of bioactive molecules in cell‐to‐cell communication. Moreover, the presence of mRNA, noncoding RNA, and miRNA in ExMVs in blood and other biological fluids opened up the possibility of employing ExMVs as new detection markers for pathological processes, and ExMVs became a target for "liquid biopsy" approaches. While ExMV‐derived mRNAs may be translated in target cells into appropriate proteins, miRNAs regulate expression of corresponding mRNA species, and both RNA‐depended ExMV‐mediated mechanisms lead to functional changes in the target cells. Following from this observation, several excellent papers have been published that confirm the existence of the horizontal transfer of RNA. Moreover, in addition to RNA, proteins, bioactive lipids, infectious particles and intact organelles such as mitochondria may follow a similar mechanism. Clustering plays an important role in constructing practical network systems. In this paper, we propose a novel clustering algorithm with low complexity for dense small cell networks, which is a promising deployment in next-generation wireless networking. Our algorithm is a matrix-based algorithm where metrics for the clustering process are represented as a matrix on which the clustering problem is represented as the maximization of elements. The proposed algorithm simplifies the exhaustive search for all possible clustering formations to the sequential selection of small cells, which significantly reduces the clustering process complexity. We evaluate the complexity and the achievable rate with the proposed algorithm and show that our algorithm achieves almost optimal performance, i.e., almost the same performance achieved by exhaustive search, while substantially reducing the clustering process complexity. From the first observation about 40 years ago that yeast cells were interesting protective structures that could be used in several industrial applications, processes have been developed enabling technologists to incorporate several compounds possessing different physico-chemical (hydrophobic/hydrophilic) properties. Technologists screened yeast diversity to choose strains possessing the best potential and modified their physiological state to increase the uptake capability and the envelope plasticity, for instance by increasing the amount of lipids. Physico-chemical treatments were also used to improve the uptake and decrease the yeast natural material impact on the final products. For example, yeast cells could be 'emptied' of their plasmic material. Yeast cells can also be coated with an additional polymeric material to increase resistance to heat treatment or decrease material liberation. These capsules can be used for several applications including carbonless paper, perfuming tissues and drug targeting, but the main industrial application deals currently with flavour encapsulation, although encapsulation in yeast is also interesting for the global food industry trend for health products. This paper proposes to review the use of yeast as an encapsulation structure focusing particularly on the properties of the yeast capsule and their impact on loading, protection, targeting and release. In this paper, we examine the static connectivity of 2D and 3D arrays of spherical cells with conductive paths, and the associated power dissipation in the individual cells. Herein, we use the term ''cellular material'' to describe the ensemble of many cells, in contrast to the more traditional use of the term for foams and honeycomb materials. Using a numerical analytical approach from highly parallel resistor arrays, we examine the cells and ensemble structures in terms of their connectivity, defined as the number of cells that are dissipating power, as well as the redundancy and robustness to localized cell failure. We examine how the connectivity changes with the geometry of the conductive cell surface area, and in particular, the percentage of the cell half that is conductive and makes contact with neighboring cells. We find that the best connectivity exists when the conductive surface of the cell is approximately 80% of the hemisphere surface, addressing the tradeoff of maximizing contact with neighboring cells while minimizing shorts in the structure. In terms of robustness, the results show that, for the proposed circular and spherical cell design, the connectivity is a nearly linear function of the number of disconnects, indicating that there is not a catastrophic effect of isolated cell failures. In terms of structure size, the connectivity appears to plateau at around 60% for the planar structures and around 50% for the cubic structures of around 500 cells or greater with random cell orientation. Cellular signaling regulates various cellular functions via protein phosphorylation. Phosphoproteomic data potentially include information for a global regulatory network from signaling to cellular functions, but a procedure to reconstruct this network using such data has yet to be established. In this paper, we provide a procedure to reconstruct a global regulatory network from signaling to cellular functions from phosphoproteomic data by integrating prior knowledge of cellular functions and inference of the kinase-substrate relationships (KSRs). We used phosphoproteomic data from insulin-stimulated Fao hepatoma cells and identified protein phosphorylation regulated by insulin specifically over-represented in cellular functions in the KEGG database. We inferred kinases for protein phosphorylation by KSRs, and connected the kinases in the insulin signaling layer to the phosphorylated proteins in the cellular functions, revealing that the insulin signal is selectively transmitted via the Pi3k-Akt and Erk signaling pathways to cellular adhesions and RNA maturation, respectively. The incidence of cancers has increased year by year and the early diagnosis for cancer is important to prevent cancers. Due to abnormal metabolism of tumor cells, the acidification of extracellular environment is an important feature for cancer cells. To achieve efficient and accurate pH measurement, this paper proposes a new detection method based on the fluorescence characteristics of CdSe quantum dots detection, which uses CdSe QDs with unique optical properties as sensitive substances for pH detection. PBS buffer (0.2 mol/L) with different pH has been used to simulate cell metabolites at different pH values and use 365 nm laser source to excite mixture liquid. The emitted light was detected by a fluorescence detection device. A mathematical model between fluorescence intensity and pH was finally obtained. The experimental results show the method show better effectiveness than other pH detection methods and has a high resolution of 0.037 within a pH range of 6.1-7.8 and a measurement resolution of 0.037 pH units. This method has high temperature stability and short testing time, which shows high potential for pH detection. This method has its superiority in all the testing methods. It exhibits a new way of generalizing to pH detection.

This paper summarizes studies on changes in cellular free radical activities from exposure to static and extremely-low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields (EMF), particularly magnetic fields. Changes in free radical activities, including levels of cellular reactive oxygen (ROS)/nitrogen (RNS) species and endogenous antioxidant enzymes and compounds that maintain physiological free radical concentrations in cells, is one of the most consistent effects of EMF exposure. These changes have been reported to affect many physiological functions such as DNA damage; immune response; inflammatory response; cell proliferation and differentiation; wound healing; neural electrical activities; and behavior. An important consideration is the effects of EMF-induced changes in free radicals on cell proliferation and differentiation. These cellular processes could affect cancer development and proper growth and development in organisms. On the other hand, they could cause selective killing of cancer cells, for instance, via the generation of the highly cytotoxic hydroxyl free radical by the Fenton Reaction. This provides a possibility of using these electromagnetic fields as a non-invasive and low side-effect cancer therapy. Static- and ELF-EMF probably play important roles in the evolution of living organisms. They are cues used in many critical survival functions, such as foraging, migration, and reproduction. Living organisms can detect and respond immediately to low environmental levels of these fields. Free radical processes are involved in some of these mechanisms. At this time, there is no credible hypothesis or mechanism that can adequately explain all the observed effects of static- and ELF-EMF on free radical processes. We are actually at the impasse that there are more questions than answers.

SUMMARY This paper assumes that a neo-Hookean matrix with neo-Hookean fibres is representative of soft tissue. Under this assumption, a unit cell model is proposed to investigate the fibre-matrix interfacial stress field for biological soft tissue under biaxial loadings. In this unit cell model, the soft tissue is treated as a composite where the matrix is unidirectionally reinforced with a single family of aligned fibres. The results are compared with the model of Guo et al., which accounts for the fibre-matrix interfacial stress field, and Qiu and Pence's model, which does not proceed from the assumption that the fibres are themselves neo-Hookean. It is found that the stress representative of the fibre-matrix interface plays an important role in the deformation of the composite, and the model of Guo et al. underestimates this stress under large biaxial deformation. High-throughput sequencing (CHIP-Seq) data exhibit binding events with possible binding locations and their strengths, followed by interpretation of the locations of peaks. Recent methods tend to summarize all CHIP-Seq peaks detected within a limited up and down region of each gene into one real-valued score in order to quantify the probability of regulation in a region. Applying subspace clustering techniques on these scores can help discover important knowledge such as the potential co-regulation or co-factor mechanisms. The ideal biclusters generated would contain subsets of genes and transcription factors (TF) such that the cell-values in biclusters are distributed around a mean value with very low variance. Such biclusters would indicate TF sets regulating gene sets with very similar probability values. However, most existing biclustering algorithms neither enforce low variance as the desired property of a bicluster, nor use variance as a guiding metric while searching for the desirable biclusters. In this paper we present an algorithm that searches a space of all overlapping biclusters organized in a lattice, and uses an upper bound on variance values of biclusters as the guiding metric. We show the algorithm to be an efficient and effective method for discovering the possibly overlapping biclusters under pre-defined variance bounds. We present in this paper our algorithm, its results with synthetic, CHIP-Seq and motif datasets, and compare them with the results obtained by other algorithms to demonstrate the power and effectiveness of our algorithm. Background: To understand the roles they play in complex diseases, genes need to be investigated in the networks they are involved in. Integration of gene expression and network data is a promising approach to prioritize disease-associated genes. Some methods have been developed in this field, but the problem is still far from being solved. Results: In this paper, we developed a method, Networked Gene Prioritizer (NGP), to prioritize cancer-associated genes. Applications on several breast cancer and lung cancer datasets demonstrated that NGP performs better than the existing methods. It provides stable top ranking genes between independent datasets. The top-ranked genes by NGP are enriched in the cancer-associated pathways. The top-ranked genes by NGP-PLK1, MCM2, MCM3, MCM7, MCM10 and SKP2 might coordinate to promote cell cycle related processes in cancer but not normal cells. Conclusions: In this paper, we have developed a method named NGP, to prioritize cancer-associated genes. Our results demonstrated that NGP performs better than the existing methods. Spatial light interference microscopy (SLIM) is a recently developed method for the label-free imaging of live cells, using the quantitative optical path length through the sample as an endogenous source of contrast. In conventional SLIM, spatial resolution is limited by diffraction and aberrations. This paper describes a novel constrained deconvolution method for improving resolution in SLIM. Constrained deconvolution is enabled by experimental measurement of the system point-spread function and the modeling of coherent image formation in SLIM. Results using simulated and experimental data demonstrate that the proposed method leads to significant improvements in the resolution and contrast of SLIM images. The proposed method should prove useful for high-resolution label-free studies of biological cells and subcellular processes. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In this paper, a new objective function (OF) within the genetic algorithm (GA) approach is presented to solve the optimization problem of coordination of overcurrent and distance relays. The existing objective function of overcurrent (O/C) relays coordination is improved and extended to include the coordination of O/C and distance relays. Various O/C relays characteristics are considered within the approach to select the best of them by GA to fulfill optimal coordination. The proposed method is applied to two different power system networks. In this paper, we analyze a mathematical model focusing on key events of the cell invasion process. The three equations of the corresponding coupled system describe the behavior of the invasive cells, the extracellular matrix and the degradative enzymes. We employ a fix-point method and a priori estimates to prove local and global existence, uniqueness and regularity properties of the solutions. Our approach enable us to find estimates that are uniform in time. This is essential in proving, in the last part of the paper, new results that establish the asymptotic behavior of the solutions. Background: Glycobiology pertains to the study of carbohydrate sugar chains, or glycans, in a particular cell or organism. Many computational approaches have been proposed for analyzing these complex glycan structures, which are chains of monosaccharides. The monosaccharides are linked to one another by glycosidic bonds, which can take on a variety of comformations, thus forming branches and resulting in complex tree structures. The q-gram method is one of these recent methods used to understand glycan function based on the classification of their tree structures. This q-gram method assumes that for a certain q, different q-grams share no similarity among themselves. That is, that if two structures have completely different components, then they are completely different. However, from a biological standpoint, this is not the case. In this paper, we propose a weighted q-gram method to measure the similarity among glycans by incorporating the similarity of the geometric structures, monosaccharides and glycosidic bonds among q-grams. In contrast to the traditional q-gram method, our weighted q-gram method admits similarity among q-grams for a certain q. Thus our new kernels for glycan structure were developed and then applied in SVMs to classify glycans. Results: Two glycan datasets were used to compare the weighted q-gram method and the original q-gram method. The results show that the incorporation of q-gram similarity improves the classification performance for all of the important glycan classes tested. Conclusion: The results in this paper indicate that similarity among q-grams obtained from geometric structure, monosaccharides and glycosidic linkage contributes to the glycan function classification. The fundamental difference between classic and modern biology is that technological innovations allow to generate highthroughput data to get insights into molecular interactions on a genomic scale. These high-throughput data can be used to infer gene networks, e.g., the transcriptional regulatory or signaling network, representing a blue print of the current dynamical state of the cellular system. However, gene networks do not provide direct answers to biological questions, instead, they need to be analyzed to reveal functional information of molecular working mechanisms. In this paper we propose a new approach to analyze the transcriptional regulatory network of yeast to predict cell cycle regulated genes. The novelty of our approach is that, in contrast to all other approaches aiming to predict cell cycle regulated genes, we do not use time series data but base our analysis on the prior information of causal interactions among genes. The major purpose of the present paper is to predict cell cycle regulated genes in S. cerevisiae. Our analysis is based on the transcriptional regulatory network, representing causal interactions between genes, and a list of known periodic genes. No further data are used. Our approach utilizes the causal membership of genes and the hierarchical organization of the transcriptional regulatory network leading to two groups of periodic genes with a well defined direction of information flow. We predict genes as periodic if they appear on unique shortest paths connecting two periodic genes from different hierarchy levels. Our results demonstrate that a classical problem as the prediction of cell cycle regulated genes can be seen in a new light if the concept of a causal membership of a gene is applied consequently. This also shows that there is a wealth of information buried in the transcriptional regulatory network whose unraveling may require more elaborate concepts than it might seem at first. In an organism, genes encode proteins, some of which in turn regulate other genes. Such interactions work in highly structured but incredibly complex ways, and make up a genetic regulatory network. Recently, nonlinear delay differential equations have been proposed for describing genetic regulatory networks in the state-space form. In this paper, we study stability properties of genetic regulatory networks with time delays, by the notion of delay-independent stability. We first present necessary and sufficient conditions for delay-independent local stability of genetic regulatory networks with a single time delay, and then extend the main result to genetic regulatory networks with multiple time delays. To illustrate the main theory, we analyze delay-independent stability of three genetic regulatory networks in E. coli or zebra fish. For E. coli, an autoregulatory network and a repressilatory network are analyzed. The results show that these two genetic regulatory networks with parameters in the physiological range are delay-independently robustly stable. For zebra fish, an autoregulatory network for the gene her1 is analyzed. The result shows that delay-independent stability of this network depends on the initial number of protein molecules, which is in agreement with the existing biological knowledge. The theories presented in this paper provide a very useful complement to the previous work and a framework for further studying the stability of more complex genetic regulatory networks. Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a significant seafood-borne pathogen, leading to serious acute gastrointestinal diseases worldwide. In this study, a reliable 4-plex droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) was successfully established and evaluated for the simultaneous detection of V. parahaemolyticus based on tlh , tdh , ureR , and orf8 in food samples using single intact cells. The targets tlh and ureR were labeled with 6-Carboxyfluorescein (FAM), and the targets tdh and orf8 were labeled with 5'-Hexachlorofluorescein (HEX). Due to reasonable proration of primers and probes corresponding into the two fluorescence channels of the ddPCR detecting platforms, the clearly separated 16 (24) clusters based on fluorescence amplitude were obtained. For better results, the sample hot lysis time and the cycle number were optimized. The results showed that the minimum number of "rain" and maximum fluorescence amplification were presented for precise detection in the condition of 25 min of the sample hot lysis time and 55 cycles. The sensitivity of this 4-plex ddPCR assay was 39 CFU/mL, which was in accordance with that of the conventional plate counting and was 10-fold sensitive than that of qPCR. In conclusion, the 4-plex ddPCR assay presented in this paper was a rapid, specific, sensitive, and accurate tool for the detection of V. parahaemolyticus including pandemic group strains and could be applied in the differentiation of V. parahaemolyticus in a wide variety of samples. In the present paper, the Layer by Layer (LbL) method using β-lactoglobulin and sodium alginate was performed to individually encapsulate Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells in microorganized shells in order to protect them against stresses during dehydration. Higher survival (∼1 log) for encapsulated yeast cells was effectively observed after air dehydration at 45°C. For the first time, the potentiality of Synchrotron-Fourier Transform InfraRed microspectroscopy (S-FTIR) was used at the single-cell level in order to analyze the contribution of the biochemical composition of non-encapsulated vs. encapsulated cells in response to dehydration. The microspectroscopy measurements clearly differentiated between non-encapsulated and encapsulated yeast cells in the amide band region. In the spectral region specific to lipids, the S-FTIR results indicated probably the decrease in membrane fluidity of yeast after dehydration without significant distinction between the two samples. These data suggested minor apparent chemical changes in cell attributable to the LbL system upon dehydration. More insights are expected regarding the lower mortality among encapsulated cells. Indeed the hypothesis that the biopolymeric layers could induce less damage in cell by affecting the transfer kinetics during dehydration-rehydration cycle, should be verified in further work. Joint processing coordinated multipoint transmission (JP-CoMP) has gained high attention as part of the effort to cope with the increasing levels of demand in the next-generation wireless communications systems. By clustering neighboring cells and with cooperative transmission within each cluster, JP-CoMP efficiently mitigates inter-cell interference and improves the overall system throughput. However, choosing the optimal clustering is formulated as a nonlinear mathematical problem, making it very challenging to find a practical solution. In this paper, we propose a distributed cell clustering algorithm that maximizes the overall throughput of the JP-CoMP scheme. The proposed algorithm renders the nonlinear mathematical problem of JP-CoMP clustering into an approximated linear formulation and introduces a multi-layer message-passing framework in order to find an efficient solution with a very low computational load. The main advantages of the proposed algorithm are that i) it enables distributed control among neighboring cells without the need for any central coordinators of the network; (ii) the computational load imposed on each cell is kept to a minimum; and, (iii) required message exchanges via backhaul result in only small levels of overhead on the network. The simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm finds an efficient JP-CoMP clustering that outperforms previous algorithms in terms of both the sum throughput and edge user throughput. Moreover, the convergence properties and the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm are compared with those of previous algorithms, confirming its usefulness in practical implementations. The industrialization of the agricultural sector has significantly increased the use of chemicals such as pesticides. Therefore, exposure to them is unavoidable, which makes it necessary to assess their safety for humans at actual exposure doses. This paper aims to determine toxicity of three types of pesticides toward human immune cells (HL-60 and U-937): glyphosate (GLY), deltamethrin (DEL), and chlorothalonil (CHL). Cell viability, membrane integrity, inflammation induction, and antioxidant activity were evaluated to determine differences in cellular response to the tested plant protection agents. In experimental models, all tested substances caused increased mortality of cells after only 24 h. Cell membrane damage was recorded under DEL and CHL influences. The largest disintegration of the cell membrane was due to the action of 100 μg/mL DEL for U-937 and CHL at 1 μg/mL for HL-60. GLY at a concentration of 3,600 μg/mL caused significant peroxidation of U-937 cells' lipids. CHL-induced inflammation in both types of cells tested. DEL and GLY also induced antioxidant activity in cells. These results lead to the conclusion that the tested pesticides act cytotoxically to the cells of the human immune system in doses to which both farmers and consumers are exposed. This paper proposes a new approach to integrating the cell formation, group layout of rectangle-shaped machines and routing selection problems. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer program with the objective of minimizing the handling costs. Due to the computational complexity of the problem, a hybrid simulated annealing (SA) is employed to solve the problem. The sequence-pair representation, originally proposed for block placement, is utilized for solution encoding. Two placement algorithms are developed to evaluate the objective function value of an encoded solution in the SA. The first placement algorithm is based on solving a linear program embedded with a constraint reduction algorithm. The second one is a fast heuristic that can evaluate an encoded solution in much less computational time. Benchmarks selected from the literature are solved to verify the performance of the SA and to accomplish comparisons. The computational results demonstrated the high performance of both designed hybrid SA algorithms. The comparison against the literature also indicated that the flexibility incorporated into the model results in better layouts, even if the model is solved only by a solver such as CPLEX. Summary: The paper presents a class‐AB flipped voltage follower (FVF) cell based on quasi‐floating gate and bulk‐driven techniques. The quasi‐floating gate technique is used to increase the current sinking capability, whereas the bulk‐driven technique is used to enhance the current sourcing capability by reducing the threshold voltage. Using these two techniques, the proposed class‐ AB FVF cell offers high current sinking and sourcing capabilities. Also, it provides high symmetrical slew rate without any additional circuitry. The physical layout of the proposed class‐ AB FVF cell has been designed in Cadence Virtuoso Layout XL editor using BSIM3v3 180‐nm CMOS technology, and post‐layout simulation results have been presented to validate its performance. Semiconductor memories are becoming more and more present in the most hostile environments. In this paper, the electrical behavior of the 6T-SRAM memory cell in 3C-SiC in 130 nm CMOS technology was studied. The study of the effect of the cell ratio (CR), supply voltage (VDD) and temperature (T) on the static noise margin (SNM), as well as the influence of temperature on write time showed that this cell is characterized by a low power (P = 27 nW), a high speed (write time τwrite = 0.305 ns) and a wide noise margin (RSNM = 320 mV), and also it works under a low voltage VDD = 1.2 V and a high temperature up to 350 °C. The comparison with the literature has shown that the 6T-SRAM cell in SiC with 130 nm CMOS technology is characterized by good electrical behavior and high electrical performance. In cell-based research, the process of visually monitoring cells generates large image datasets that need to be evaluated for quantifiable information in order to track the effectiveness of treatments in vitro. With the traditional, end-point assay-based approach being error-prone, and existing computational approaches being complex, we tested existing machine learning frameworks to find methods that are relatively simple, yet powerful enough to accomplish the goal of analyzing cell microscopy data. This paper details the machine learning pipeline for pixel-based classification and object-based classification. Furthermore, it compares the performances of three classifiers. The classifiers evaluated were the fast-random forest (RF), the sequential minimal optimization (SMO), and the Bayesian network (BN). Images were first preprocessed using smoothing and contrast methods found in FIJI. For pixel-based classification, the preprocessed images were fed into the Trainable Waikato Segmentation (TWS). For object-based classification, training and classification were conducted within the Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis (WEKA) interface. All classifiers' performance was evaluated using the WEKA experimental explorer. In terms of performance, the BN had the lowest classification accuracy for both the pixel-based and object-based model. The object-based SMO classifier had the best performance with the lowest mean absolute error of 0.05. The TWS and WEKA interface allows users to easily create and train classifiers for image analysis. However, for analyzing large image datasets, they are not ideal. Grapical abstract. Today digital holographic interferometry (DHI) is considered a modern full-field non-destructive technique that allows generating 3D quantitative data of a wide variety of specimens. There are diverse optical setups for DHI that enable the study of specimens in static and dynamic conditions: it is a viable alternative to characterize a wide diversity of parameters in the micro and macro world by conducting repeatable, reliable and accurate measurements that render specimen data, e.g., displacements, shape, spatial dimensions, physiological conditions, refractive indices, and vibration responses. This paper presents a review and progress on the most significant topics, contributions and applications involving DHI for the study of different specimens such as: cells, bio tissues, grains, insects, and nano-structures. For most of the research work involving macro and micro specimens the wave-like source used in the measurements were photons from a laser, while the studies carried out in the nano regime used the wave-like nature of the electron. Small cells are expected to increase the capacity and the coverage of a wireless network. Since the transmission ranges of the small cells overlap with each other, a user equipment (UE) can be located within the service areas of multiple cells. Therefore, the association decisions made by the small cells and the UEs influence the energy efficiency of the cells and the data rates provided to the UEs. However, if they attempt to achieve their goals selfishly, the network may become instable in that a UE has to change its associated cell and a cell has to change the set of UEs associated with it frequently. To tackle the problem, in this paper, we propose an association game between UEs and cells. We cast the problem as a matching game where each player has preference over the other player. Then, we propose an association algorithm composed of a UE-side part and a cell-side part. Through simulation studies, we show that the proposed method outperforms the other methods in that it can enhance the average energy efficiency of the small cell network and the data rates that UEs can obtain from the network. Featured Application: The proposed device and method can promote the arrangement of cells in defined geometries through acoustic flexural plate waves for organized engineered tissues. In this paper, the possibility to steer and confine live human cells by means of acoustic waves, such as flexural plate waves (FPWs), generated by piezoelectric actuators applied to non-piezoelectric substrates, has been explored. A device with two lead zirconate titanate (PZT) actuators with an interdigital transducer (IDT) screen-printed on an alumina (Al2O3) substrate has been fabricated and tested. The experimental results show that, by exciting the actuators at their resonant frequencies, FPW modes are generated in the substrate. By exploiting the device, arrangements of cells on lines at frequency-dependent distances have been obtained. To maintain the alignment after switching off the actuator, cells were entrapped in a fibrin clot that was cultured for several days, enabling the formation of cellular patterns. We present a circuit-level technique of designing a lower write-power along with variability-resistant 9-MOFTET static random-access memory cell. Our proposed bitcell exhibits lower write-power consumption owing to reduction of activity factor and breakup of feedback path between the cross-coupled inverters during write operation. It exhibits higher read static noise margin (by 3.09 ×) compared with standard 6T SRAM cell @ minimum-area. LP9T shows higher static margin for write operation (by 41%) compared with 8T (S6T) @ iso-area (minimum-area). These improvements are achieved due to breakup of feedback path during the process of writing a bit on to the storage node. The paper investigates in detail the influence of variation in process related parameters, environmental parameters such as supply voltage and temperature on most of the important design parameters of the bitcell and compares the obtained simulation results with conventional 6-MOSFET (6T) and 8-MOSFET (8T) bitcells. It demonstrates its invariableness by showing 1.5 × tighter disperse in read time variability with a cost of 1.41 × higher read time compared with S6T @ minimum-area. It also exhibits 39% narrower disperse in read time variability in comparison to 8T @ iso-area. It draws lower power (2.06 ×) from supply voltage while flipping of stored data during write mode compared with standard 8T SRAM cell @ iso-area. It also compares key design metrics of LP9T with those of few other 9T SRAM cells found in the literature. This work also realizes the proposed design using CNFET. The widespread application of triazole fungicides makes people attach great concern over its adverse effects in mammalian. In this paper, cytotoxic effects of triazole alcohol fungicides (TAFs) were assessed on human HeLa, A549, HCT116 and K562 cells, and the potential mechanism of TAFs cytotoxicity was studied preliminarily. Results showed that TAFs had cytotoxicity on human cells with different level and cytotoxic selectivity. TAFs cytotoxicity was resonated with a typical hormetic biphasic dose action that produced a complex pattern of stimulatory or inhibitory effects on cell viability. Among the five TAFs, diniconazole revealed a widest range of cytotoxicity to inhibit the viability of the adherent and the suspension cells, causing HeLa cells shrinkage, A549 cells shrunken, and K562 cells collapse, and showed stronger cytotoxicity than hexaconazole. Moreover, the involvement of ROS generation in the cytotoxicity of TAFs on human cells was observed, and the apoptosis of HeLa cells and the formation of apoptotic body in K562 cells induced by diniconazole were characterized. The results indicated the cytotoxicity of TAFs with different structures on human cells was depended on their own property and cell specificity, K562 cells were the most susceptible to TAFs and diniconazole was the strongest toxic. Cell volume regulation, as one of the fundamental homeostasis of the cell, is associated with many cellular behaviors and functions. With the increased studies on the effect of environmental mechanical cues on cell volume regulation, the relationship between cell volume regulation and mechanotransduction becomes more and more clear. In this paper, we review the mechanisms and hypotheses by which cell maintains its volume homeostasis both in vivo and in constructed cell mechanical microenvironment (CMM) in vitro. We discuss how the growth‐division regulation maintains the volume homeostasis of cells in the cell cycle and how the cell cortex/membrane tension mediates the effect of CMM (i.e., osmotic pressure, matrix stiffness, and mechanical force) on cell volume regulation. We also highlight the roles of cell volume as a perfect integrator of the downstream signals of mechanotransduction from different aspects of CMM and an effective indicator for the mechanical condition that cell confronts. This interdisciplinary perspective can provide new insight into biomechanics and may shed light on bioengineering and pathological research work. Explosive growth of mobile data demand may impose a heavy traffic burden on fronthaul links of cloud-based small cell networks (C-SCNs), which deteriorates users’ quality of service (QoS) and requires substantial power consumption. This paper proposes an efficient maximum distance separable (MDS) coded caching framework for a cache-enabled C-SCNs, aiming at reducing long-term power consumption while satisfying users’ QoS requirements in short-term transmissions. To achieve this goal, the cache resource in small-cell base stations (SBSs) needs to be reasonably updated by taking into account users’ content preferences, SBS collaboration, and characteristics of wireless links. Specifically, without assuming any prior knowledge of content popularity, we formulate a mixed timescale problem to jointly optimize cache updating, multicast beamformers in fronthaul and edge links, and SBS clustering. Nevertheless, this problem is anti-causal because an optimal cache updating policy depends on future content requests and channel state information. To handle it, by properly leveraging historical observations, we propose a two-stage updating scheme by using Frobenius-Norm penalty and inexact block coordinate descent method. Furthermore, we derive a learning-based design, which can obtain effective trade-off between accuracy and computational complexity. Data stability, write ability and leakage power are major concerns in submicron static random access memory (SRAM) cell design. This paper presents an 11T SRAM cell with differential write and single-ended read. Proposed cell offers improved write ability by interrupting its ground connection during write operation. Separate read buffer provides disturb-free read operation. Characteristics are obtained from HSPICE simulation using 32 nm high-performance predictive technology model. Simulation results show that the proposed cell achieves 4.5 × and 1.06 × higher read static noise margin (RSNM) as compared to conventional 6T (C6T) and PNN-based 10T cells, respectively, at 0.4 V. Write static noise margin (WSNM) of the proposed design is 1.65 × , 1.71 × and 1.77 × larger as compared to those of C6T, PPN-based 10T and PNN-based 10T cells, respectively, at 0.4V. Write "1" delay of the proposed cell is 0.108 × and 0.81 × as those of PPN10T and PNN10T cells, respectively. Proposed circuit consumes 1.40 × lesser read power as compared to PPN10T cell at 0.4 V. This paper presents a novel ultracompact narrow bandpass filter with high selectivity. The proposed filter is composed of cascading two basic cells. Each cell is basically a microstrip line loaded with a quasiplanar resonator and series gaps which can be fabricated using a standard multilayer printed circuit board technology. The structure is analyzed through an equivalent circuit and full-wave simulations. The simulation results are compared with experimental measurements demonstrating a good agreement between them. The measurement indicates that the realized bandpass filter at the center frequency of 1 GHz has a fractional bandwidth of 2.2%. This paper deals with cell identifier (ID) estimation for narrowband-Internet of things (NB-IoT) system. It is suggested to transform the usual maximum likelihood (ML) estimator expression in order to highlight a discrete Fourier transform (DFT), which can be computed with fast algorithms. Therefore, the proposed method is a DFT-based low-complexity cell ID estimator that can be qualified as optimal in the ML sense. The principle is extended to the practical case where the channel is unknown and must be estimated. In this scenario, the concentrated likelihood function needs to be maximized, in which the ML channel estimate is a function of the unknown cell ID parameter. This operation only involves a few additional multiplications. Simulation results reveal that the performance of the proposed method actually matches the optimal one of the ML cell ID estimator. Furthermore, the technique is robust to residual frequency offset up to several hundreds of Hertz. We also show that the mean square error of channel estimation reaches its Cramér-Rao bound (CRB). Since the invention of lithium ion batteries, charging strategies have met great acknowledgment and research over the years. In this paper, a laptop with lithium polymer battery is monitored via three widely used tools, during various operational and charging loads. Several key values are obtained in order to evaluate the correlation between battery cycles, charging percentages and depth of discharge. Ultimately the results show that massive discharges and continuous operation with the device plugged should be avoided, though high load tasks require the AC charger to be connected.
