This paper aims to analyze the frequency of occurrence of different forms of communication in nonspeaking children during activities with digital games. The participants in this study were three children with multiple disabilities, whose limitations were due to cerebral palsy. All the children had severe oral communication disabilities. Three digital games were developed by the Research Group of Computational Modeling of SENAI/CIMATEC for this population: Food Safety, Public Safety and Sustainable City. This research group has qualified people who have different areas of training and experience. From analysis of the footage, by recording the observation, it was possible to identify the occurrence of five categories of communication; vocal and non-verbal was the one that stood out. Additionally, we analyzed the expansion of the children's communication individually in each session, thus allowing us to identify the ongoing progress of this variable. The digital games encouraged the use of different forms of communication in nonspeaking children with multiple disabilities resulting from cerebral palsy. This paper discusses the importance of analyzing the different possibilities of expression for these children with cerebral palsy in order to plan more effective treatments in the area Augmentative and Alternative Communication, using digital games and assistive technology.

Background: The aim of the proposed study is to perform a comparative analysis of functional training effects for the paretic upper limb with and without transcranial direct current stimulation over the primary motor cortex in children with spastic hemiparetic cerebral palsy.Methods: The sample will comprise 34 individuals with spastic hemiparetic cerebral palsy, 6 to 16 years old, classified at level I, II, or III of the Manual Ability Classification System. Participants will be randomly allocated to two groups: (1) functional training of the paretic upper limb combined with anodic transcranial stimulation; (2) functional training of the paretic upper limb combined with sham transcranial stimulation. Evaluation will involve three-dimensional movement analysis and electromyography using the SMART-D 140® system (BTS Engineering) and the FREEEMG® system (BTS Engineering), the Quality of Upper Extremity Skills Test, to assess functional mobility, the Portable Device and Ashworth Scale, to measure movement resistance and spasticity, and the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory, to evaluate performance. Functional reach training of the paretic upper limb will include a range of manual activities using educational toys associated with an induced constraint of the non-paretic limb during the training. Training will be performed in five weekly 20-minute sessions for two weeks. Transcranial stimulation over the primary motor cortex will be performed during the training sessions at an intensity of 1 mA. Findings will be analyzed statistically considering a 5 % significance level (P ≤ 0.05).Discussion: This paper presents a detailed description of a prospective, randomized, controlled, double-blind, clinical trial designed to demonstrate the effects of combining transcranial direct current stimulation over the primary motor cortex and functional training of the paretic limb in children with cerebral palsy classified at level I, II, or III of the Manual Ability Classification System. Background: Few studies demonstrate effectiveness of therapies for oral rehabilitation of patients with cerebral palsy (CP), given the difficulties in chewing, swallowing and speech, besides the intellectual, sensory and social limitations. Due to upper airway obstruction, they are also vulnerable to sleep disorders. This study aims to assess the sleep variables, through polysomnography, and masticatory dynamics, using electromiography, before and after neuromuscular electrical stimulation, associated or not with low power laser (Gallium Arsenide- Aluminun, =780 nm) and LED (= 660 nm) irradiation in CP patients., Methods/design: 50 patients with CP, both gender, aged between 19 and 60 years will be enrolled in this study. The inclusion criteria are: voluntary participation, patient with hemiparesis, quadriparesis or diparetic CP, with ability to understand and respond to verbal commands. The exclusion criteria are: patients undergoing/underwent orthodontic, functional maxillary orthopedic or botulinum toxin treatment. Polysomnographic and surface electromyographic exams on masseter, temporalis and suprahyoid will be carry out in all sample. Questionnaire assessing oral characteristics will be applied. The sample will be divided into 5 treatment groups: Group 1: neuromuscular electrical stimulation; Group 2: laser therapy; Group 3: LED therapy; Group 4: neuromuscular electrical stimulation and laser therapy and Group 5: neuromuscular electrical stimulation and LED therapy. All patients will be treated during 8 consecutive weeks. This paper proposes a simple method of hand skill assessment in children that can be useful in clinical practice. A reduced 5-hole version of Annett's Peg Moving Task was used to quantify hand skill bilaterally in 435 normally developing preschool and school-children, and adolescents aged 3-18 years from Brazil. The cross-cultural validity of the normative data obtained in Brazil was verified in 157 school-children aged 6-11 years from France. An application in 76 children with cerebral palsy (hemiplegia 21, diplegia 34, triplegia 6, mixed type 15) showed very important variability of the deficits in hand function within each subtype of cerebral palsy (CP). Hand deficits were more severe in children in special schools than in children in regular schools within each CP subtype. A qualitative analysis showed which difficulties during the execution of the task were specific to children with CP and which were also observed in normally developing children.

Purpose: Children with cerebral palsy (CP) may present varied ophthalmological problems. Paradoxically, however, investigation of visual function and possible related disorders is not routinely conducted in this population during medical consultations. Method: This paper proposes a simple, practical guide for assessing vision and ocular motricity in children with CP. One-hundred and twenty-three patients (mean age: 8.4 years ± 2.3) from the Sarah Network of Rehabilitation Hospitals (Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and São Luis units) were studied. Various parameters were investigated (smooth pursuit movements, strabismus, visual acuity, visual field, visuospatial neglect and nystagmus) using the following assessment tools: adapted smooth pursuit test for ocular motricity; Snellen test for visual acuity; confrontation method for visual field; cancellation test (star test) for visual neglect; and cover test for strabismus. Nystagmus was assessed based on patient observation. Results: Eighty-one children completed all the evaluations. Among these, 38 (47%) had no visual problems (hemiplegia 60.5%; diplegia 41.4%; triplegia 12.5%; mixed tetraplegic 33.3%); 23 had difficulties in one of the tested items; and 20 had problems in two or more areas of vision. Conclusions: Visual and oculomotor tests are of significant importance in children with CP and provide relevant information for creating a rehabilitation programme aimed at the individual as a whole. Background: The purpose of this study was to translate, cross-culturally adapt and validate the Gillette Functional Assessment Questionnaire (FAQ) into Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation was carried out in accordance with international recommendations. The FAQ was applied to a sample of 102 patients diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP). Construct validity was assessed using Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho), and the FAQ score was correlated with the Functional Mobility Scale (FMS) and Gross Motor Function Classification Scale (GMFCS). A subsample of 50 patients was used to assess reliability using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable difference (MDD). Ceiling and floor effects were also evaluated. Results: The Brazilian version of the FAQ showed excellent test-retest reliability by the assessment of the physiotherapist (ICC = 0.99) and respondent (ICC = 0.97), as well as excellent inter-examiner reliability (ICC = 0.94). The SEM was 0.23 (physiotherapist), 0.47 (respondent) and 0.64 (inter-examiner), while the MDD was 0.64 (physiotherapist), 1.29 (respondent) and 1.76 (inter-examiner). The classification of gross motor function showed a high correlation with the FAQ applied by the physiotherapist (rho = -0.89) and by the respondent (rho = -0.87). The FMS-5 m was highly correlated with the FAQ applied by the physiotherapist and the respondent (rho = 0.88 and rho = 0.87, respectively). The FMS-50 and FMS-500 presented very high correlation with the FAQ applied by the physiotherapist (rho = 0.91 for both) and high correlation with the FAQ applied by the respondent (rho = 0.89 and rho = 0.88, respectively). The Brazilian version of the FAQ did not present the ceiling and floor effects. Conclusion: The FAQ presented adequate psychometric properties in patients with CP, indicating that it is possible to use it as a measure of functional gait mobility in Brazil. The participation of adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) within the community is reduced compared to their peers and is a barrier to their socialization, self-determination and quality of life. Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) is a key strategy for successful interventions, especially when involvement of the stakeholders takes place at all stages of the research. Co-design can be crucial for success as researchers, patients with CP and their families work together to bring the necessary elements to the interventions to be designed. The objectives will be: (1) To co-design an intervention aimed at improving the participation of adolescents with significant motor disabilities within the community in partnership with adolescents with CP, families and rehabilitation professionals. (2) To assess the feasibility of the co-design process in partnership with interested parties. The study will be based on Participatory Action Research (PAR) and will be held in Spain and Brazil. In both countries, the study will be carried out remotely with nine adolescents aged 12 to 17 years with CP, Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels IV–V, their families and six health professionals (physiotherapists and occupational therapists). Different dialogue groups will be created to involve adolescents, families and health professionals to the research's project. To manage their involvement in the co-design process, the Involvement Matrix (IM) will be used, and according to the IM phases, four steps will be included in the research: (1) Preparation; (2) Co-design; (3) Analysis: results of the intervention protocol and the study's feasibility and (4) Dissemination of results. Partnering with the public to design an intervention to improve participation can bring better results compared to protocols designed only by health professionals. In addition, it will allow for knowing the needs of adolescents with CP in terms of participation within the community. The study will also explore which roles were chosen by all participants and how they felt while actively participating in the process of co-designing an intervention protocol and their own perspectives on the use of the involvement matrix. To investigate the feasibility and the preliminary effects of an individualized intensive goal training for adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP). Twelve adolescents with CP (12–17 years old, MACS II-III, GMFCS I-IV) identified functional goals to be practiced three hours/day, five days/week, for two weeks. The feasibility aspects included the participant's adherence (i.e., daily logs), the adequacy of the instruments used, and the participant's satisfaction with the intervention (i.e., structured questionnaire). Outcome measures included the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) (self-care; mobility), Children Helping Out: Responsibilities, Expectations and Supports (CHORES), Participation and Environment Measure-Children and Youth (PEM-CY) (home) and Box and Blocks Test (BBT). Assessments were conducted one month and two days before the intervention, immediately and three months after the intervention. Friedman tests were used to test time-related differences in the outcome measures. All adolescents completed and reported satisfaction with the proposed intervention. Significant improvements were observed in performance and satisfaction (COPM), in functional skills and caregiver assistance in self-care and in the performance of household tasks. There were no significant differences in mobility skills, independence in mobility or household tasks, home participation, or manual dexterity. Background: We aim to describe the long term follow-up of a cohort of children exposed in utero to the Zika virus. Methods: Descriptive study of a cohort of microcephalic children due to Zika virus. Logistic regression was used to evaluate variables associated with worse prognosis epilepsy. Results: We followed 28 children (15 females), with a median follow-up of 24 months (IQR = 12-28). During the follow-up, 1 infant died. The median head circumference at birth was 29 cm (IQR = 27-31). All presented a global developmental delay. The most frequent central nervous system abnormalities were on cortical development in 22 participants; dysgenesis of corpus callosum in 13; ventriculomegaly in 25; and calcifications in 24. A total of 9 presented ocular abnormalities, 4 auditory impairment. During follow-up, 12 presented with sleep disorders, 10 with irritability, and 23 with epilepsy (2 with generalized tonic-clonic, 3 with generalized tonic-clonic and spasms, 12 with spasms, 3 tonic and spasms, and 3 motor focal and spasms). The median age at the begin of the epilepsy was 4 months (IQR = 2-10), the median number of drugs used to control the epilepsy was 2 (IQR = 2-3). Maternal illicit drug use during pregnancy was associated with worse prognosis epilepsy (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, West syndrome, or status epilepticus). A total of 19 presented with dysphagia, 10 children required gastrostomy. Conclusion: Children with microcephaly due to Zika virus presented with several complications during follow-up, as epilepsy, spastic diplegia, and global developmental delay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The concept of assistive technology covers several areas of action; one of them is communication with the elaboration of accessible solutions to overcome daily difficulties. It contributes to the resumption of functional abilities, expanding and facilitating inclusion and independent living. Objective: To analyze the usability of a low cost prototype device to support educational activities of adolescents with cerebral palsy. Methods: A descriptive observational study. The evaluation of a prototype device was made through a validated questionnaire, Quest Version 2.0, on the level of the user’s satisfaction with an assistive technology, composed of 12 evaluation items. The questionnaire was filled out by the educator based on the observation of four wheelchair-bound participants diagnosed with cerebral palsy according to the international classification of diseases and health-related problems, ICD-10, who attend a coexistence and teaching institution in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Results: The device developed was considered an assistive technology, which provided an experience with a positive level of satisfaction for the participants. Conclusion: The tested prototype contributes to communication and interaction allowing adolescents with cerebral palsy to participate in educational activities. Implications for Rehabilitation: The device assists the individual in the educational activities and can positively influence their development, observe the individual number 5, who has an important limitation in coordination and fine movements, placing the role of the task in the vertical position offers a new perspective to perform the task, this stimulates him to try to perform the work, so the challenge was adjusted to the demands of each individual which can contribute to its neuromotor development, the amplitude of the distal movements and the manual ability, since it must look for alternatives to complete the task requested. Objectives: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a permanent disorder of movement, muscle tone or posture that is caused by damage to the immature and developing brain. Research has shown that Virtual Reality (VR) technology can be used in rehabilitation to support the acquisition of motor skills and the achievement of functional tasks. The aim of this study was to explore for improvements in the performance of individuals with CP with practice in the use of a virtual game on a mobile phone and to compare their performance with that of the control group. Materials and methods: Twenty-five individuals with CP were matched for age and sex with twenty-five, typically developing individuals. Participants were asked to complete a VR maze task as fast as possible on a mobile phone. All participants performed 20 repetitions in the acquisition phase, five repetitions for retention and five more repetitions for transfer tests, in order to evaluate motor learning from the task. Results: The CP group improved their performance in the acquisition phase and maintained the performance, which was shown by the retention test; in addition, they were able to transfer the performance acquired in an opposite maze path. The CP group had longer task-execution compared to the control group for all phases of the study. Conclusion: Individuals with cerebral palsy were able to learn a virtual reality game (maze task) using a mobile phone, and despite their differences from the control group, this kind of device offers new possibilities for use to improve function. Implications for rehabilitation: A virtual game on a mobile phone can enable individuals with Cerebral Palsy (CP) to improve performance. This illustrates the potential for use of mobile phone games to improve function. Individuals with CP had poorer performance than individuals without CP, but they demonstrated immediate improvements from using a mobile phone device. Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common disability in children caused by central nervous system lesion. The aim of the present study was to verify the intensive neuromotor therapy effects in children with CP, in a reference Brazilian centre. In this study, three years of medical records from a Brazilian reference Centre of Intensive Neuromotor Therapy (INMT) which use the INMT protocol were analysed. The motor evaluation for each child was done by the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) and GMFM-88 by an experienced professional, before and after each INMT module. A total of 53 children between the ages of 1 and 15 years (age at treatment initiation, initial evaluation), with a mean age of 5.94±3.38 years, participated in the study. Participants performed between 1 and 10 INMT modules. There was no strong correlation between age and overall performance on the GMFM scale, but it was observed a strong negative correlation between the percentage of GMFM gains and the number of modules (r=-0.709; R² = 0.50; p = 0.022, CI95%[0.014 - 0.026]), suggesting that patients tend to present higher percentage gains in the first modules. Aim To investigate the influence of salivary osmolality on the occurrence of gingivitis in children with cerebral palsy ( CP). Design A total of 82 children with spastic CP were included in this cross-sectional study. Oral motor performance and gingival conditions were evaluated. Unstimulated saliva was collected using cotton swabs, and salivary osmolality was measured using a freezing point depression osmometer. Spearman's coefficient, receiver operating characteristic ( ROC), and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. Results Strong correlation ( r > 0.7) was determined among salivary osmolality, salivary flow rate, visible plaque, dental calculus, and the occurrence of gingivitis. The area under the ROC to predict the influence of salivary osmolality on the occurrence of gingivitis was 0.88 (95% CI 0.81-0.96; P < 0.001). The cutoff value of 84.5 for salivary osmolality presented good sensitivity and specificity, both higher than 77%. The proportion of children presenting salivary osmolality ≤84.5 mOsm/kgH2O and gingivitis was 22.5%, whereas for the group presenting osmolality >84.5 mOsm/kgH2O, the proportion of children with gingivitis was 77.5%. Salivary osmolality above 84.5 increased the likelihood of gingivitis fivefold, whereas each additional 0.1 mL of salivary flow reduced the likelihood of gingivitis by 97%. Background: Assessing the frequency and factors associated with dental trauma in pediatric populations with cerebral palsy is important for the planning and implementation of prevention and health promotion programs. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with dental trauma in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy.Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study with a non-probabilistic sample of 80 patients aged 2-18 years was treated in a rehabilitation institution in northeastern Brazil. Caregivers completed a socioeconomic questionnaire, while oral exams were performed by a calibrated investigator (K = 0.75-1.00), with record of the Dental Trauma Index, DMFT and dmft, and Dental Aesthetics and malocclusion indices. Bivariate and multivariate Poisson regression analyses (α = 0.05) were performed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 17.Results: The prevalence of dental trauma was 36.3%, enamel fracture was the most common trauma (89.1%), and the upper central incisors were the most affected dental elements (63.0%). Patients with dental trauma were male, aged 7-18 years, with family income more than one minimum wage, caregiver's education over 4 years, increased overjet, lip hypotonia, quadriplegia, epilepsy, oral breathing, and severe communication skills. The presence of dental trauma was not associated with socioeconomic characteristics (gender, age, family income, and caregiver's educational level), oral health perception, and systemic and oral conditions (dental caries, malocclusion, and lip hypotonia) were evaluated (P > 0.05).Conclusion: The prevalence of dental trauma was high, but not associated with clinical variables and evaluated socioeconomic indicators. Objective: To evaluate the work process for CP cases in different rehabilitation centers according to Brazilian health policies and recommendations from the 'World Report on Disability'. Methods: A questionnaire - Evaluation Process of Rehabilitation of Children with CP was applied to the Coordinators of 13 services. This instrument has a maximum score of 108 points. Results: The results of the questionnaire varied from 28 to 64 points. The mean and SD were 43.5 and 10.9, respectively. The main administrative difficulties were: (a) presence of unmet demand, (b) patient absenteeism, (c) referral to primary care services, (d) inadequate physical facilities, (e) the scarce provision of prosthetics and orthotics, (f) insufficient financial resources, (g) human resources training, (h) difficulties with the use of the information system and (i) transportation difficulties for patients. People with disabilities face many accessibility problems in their daily lives. One such group of disabled people, children who suffer from cerebral palsy, faces specific challenges, which arise due to motor dysfunction and communication disorders. In the effort to help these children, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems emerge as solutions to supplement spoken communication or to replace it completely. But current AAC solutions do not always address specific communication needs. Determining how to collaborate directly with cerebral palsy children as partners in the assistive technology design process is still an open research problem. This work discusses the development of an AAC computer-based solution to act as a complement to therapist's AAC activities in helping make the lives of children with disabilities better. The AAC tool is based on symbols located on a computer screen and uses symbol and phrase suggestion strategies aiming to increase communication efficiency. Two school-age students with cerebral palsy participated in this study. Quantitative reports and qualitative assessments from a speech and an occupational therapist are presented. This research deals with a set of accessibility guidelines that benefit researchers and practitioners, giving more evidence about the design of AAC computer-based solutions for people with limited speech or language skills. Background. Dental biofilm removal is difficult and can be ineffective in individuals with cerebral palsy. Objective. Determine the effectiveness of brushing with an electric toothbrush on and off in comparison with manual brushing for the removal of biofilm in children aged four to 16 years with cerebral palsy. Methods. A crossover, randomized, simple-blind, clinical trial was conducted. The examiner was blinded to the brushing method (G1: manual; G2: electric toothbrush on; and G3: electric toothbrush off). The order was determined randomly. The participants (n = 40) were examined before and after brushing performed by caregivers using the Turesky-Quigley-Hein biofilm index. Statistical analysis involved the paired t-test, Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis, and ANOVA tests. Results. Biofilm was significantly reduced with the three brushing methods (P < 0.001) (mean reductions: 47.6% in G1; 47.4% in G2; 44.5% in G3). Significant differences were found between G1 and G3 (P < 0.001) and between G2 and G3 (P = 0.007). No significant difference was found between G1 and G2 (P = 0.06). Conclusion. All methods reduced biofilm. Effectiveness was similar between manual brushing and with the electric toothbrush on, whereas both these methods achieved better results in comparison with the electric toothbrush switched off. Introduction: Cerebral palsy (CP) may involve muscle imbalance between the spastic muscles and their antagonists leading to weak postural changes, decreased mobility and chest deformities. Objective: To improve postural condition in children with CP using physiotherapy and assistive technology (AT). Materials and methods: Five children with CP and multiple disabilities and postural changes like scoliosis were included in this study. AT involved the use of low-cost custom made cushion seat and backrest for the wheelchairs to achieve 90° of trunk flexion. This was performed in 10 sessions after the beginning of physiotherapy. As evaluation-intervention tool, photographs were taken at the beginning and end of each session, and then analyzed using software for postural assessment (SAPO). Results: Twenty-five per cent of the participants had an improvement of trunk angulations at the end of the treatment program. Objectives: To integrate instruments to operationalize an ICF-based approach for cerebral palsy (CP); to assess differences in activity and participation among children with hemiplegia, diplegia and quadriplegia CP; to verify the facilitators or barriers to functioning; and to investigate the explanatory factors (cognitive and motor) for the type of school attended by children with CP (regular or special). Methods: Sixty children with CP were assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination and an ICF-based instrument and their parents were interviewed. Data were analysed by Chi-Squared, Anova's and Kruskal-Wallis tests and multivariate logistic regression. Results: Significant differences between CP sub-groups were found for chewing, urinary function, cognitive function and activities and participation. Twelve environmental factors were identified as barriers. Multivariate regression identified cognitive function as a significant explanatory variable for the type of school attended, whereas motor function was not significant. Background: This study measured grating visual acuity in 173 children between 6-48 months of age who had different types of spastic cerebral palsy (CP). Method: Behavioural acuity was measured with the Teller Acuity Cards (TAC) using a staircase psychophysical procedure. Electrophysiological visual acuity was estimated using the sweep VEP (sVEP). Results: The percentage of children outside the superior tolerance limits was 44 of 63 (69%) and 50 of 55 (91%) of tetraplegic, 36 of 56 (64%) and 42 of 53 (79%) of diplegic, 10 of 48 (21%) and 12 of 40 (30%) of hemiplegic for sVEP and TAC, respectively. For the sVEP, the greater visual acuity deficit found in the tetraplegic group was significantly different from that of the hemiplegic group ( p < 0.001). In the TAC procedure the mean visual acuity deficits of the tetraplegic and diplegic groups were significantly different from that of hemiplegic group ( p < 0.001). The differences between sVEP and TAC means of visual acuity difference were statistically significant for the tetraplegic ( p < 0.001), diplegic ( p < 0.001), and hemiplegic group ( p = 0.004). Discussion: Better visual acuities were obtained in both procedures for hemiplegic children compared to diplegic or tetraplegic. Tetraplegic and diplegic children showed greater discrepancies between the TAC and sVEP results. Inter-ocular acuity difference was more frequent in sVEP measurements. Background and Purpose: Evaluate self-initiated pretend play of children with cerebral palsy. Method: Twenty preschool children participated in the study. Pretend play ability was measured by using the child-initiated pretend play assessment culturally adapted to Brazil. Results: There were significant negative correlations between the children's motor severity level and their elaborateness of play with conventional-imaginative and symbolic play materials and a number of object substitutions in symbolic play. This indicated that children with greater motor limitations had diminished play ability. In this sample, 35%% of the children showed typical play styles, identified by good scores in elaborate pretend play actions, number of object substitutions, and ability to self-initiate play, whereas 65%% showed delay in their play. Implications: The type of pretend play deficits that might be expected in children with cerebral palsy were described. Objective: To assess knowledge related to the ICF before and after an ICF training and to identify items to compose a monocentric rehabilitation ICF code set for cerebral palsy (CP). Methods: (a) Design: A cross-sectional study with a descriptive-explorative design. (b) Participants: Professionals from the fields of physiotherapy, nutrition, dentistry, occupational therapy, psychology, social work, speech therapy and medicine. (c) Instrument: A questionnaire to assess ICF's knowledge (total score == 17). Results: A high effect size of the ICF training was found (Cohen's d == 4.10). Ninety-one and 43 ICF categories were selected for a comprehensive evaluation and triage, respectively, for CP. Conclusion: ICF categories were identified to compose a comprehensive evaluation and for triage through an ICF code sets for CP. Studies are needed to validate the instrument on the knowledge of the ICF and to test the impact of ICF's training for clinical rehabilitation of CP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the type of cerebral palsy (CP) and oral motor function (OMF) on the oral health status of children and adolescents with CP in Teresina, Piauí, Brazil. The sample consisted of 52 children with CP, aged 7 to 18 years. The data were statistically analyzed using chi-square tests. In 73.1% of the sample, the subjects' caregivers carried out the daily oral care. There was a significant association between the frequency of daily care and the subject's level of oral hygiene ( p= .037). A diagnosis of Class II malocclusion was made for 55.8% of the sample, and defects of enamel formation were found in 38.5% of the subjects. There was no significant correlation between DMFT (decayed, missing, filled teeth) and socioeconomic status of the subjects (r = .254, p= .069). A significant association was found between quadriplegia and OMF (χ= 7.88, p= .019). The type of CP and OMF did not influence the levels of plaque and caries indices in the children with CP, but increased frequency of toothbrushing did result in an improved oral hygiene index. Objectives. To assess the prevalence of untreated dental caries in children with cerebral palsy and to assess socio-demographic, behavioural, and clinical covariates. Design. Cross-sectional assessment of 200 children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (2–17 years old) enrolled in a specialized healthcare unit in São Paulo, Brazil. The dental examination followed the World Health Organization's guidelines for oral health surveys; familial caretakers informed on socio-economic status and behaviour; the patient's medical record informed their clinical status. Results. The proportion of children that presented at least one tooth affected by untreated caries was 49.5%. Poor socio-economic standings and a higher frequency of sugar consumption associated with a worse profile of dental health; different types of cerebral palsy (spastic, tetraparesis) did not. The prevalence of untreated caries was higher than reference values assessed for the overall population of the same age range. Conclusions. The high burden of untreated dental caries on cerebral palsy patients reinforces the importance of the dentist in the interdisciplinary healthcare team attending these children. Factors associated with this outcome are the same for the general population; these findings underscore the necessity of implementing effective caries prevention in this population of cerebral palsy children. Background: Gross motor development curves for children with Cerebral Palsy (CP), grouped by Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels, help health care professionals and parents to understand children's motor function prognosis. Although these curves are widely used in Brazil to guide clinical decision-making, they were developed with Canadian children with CP. Little is known about how these patterns evolve in children and adolescents with CP in low-income countries like Brazil. The PARTICIPA BRAZIL aims to: (i) to identify and draw a profile of functioning and disability of Brazilian children and adolescents with CP by classifying them, for descriptive purposes, with all five valid and reliable functional classifications systems (gross motor function, manual ability, communication function, visual and eating and drinking abilities); (ii) to create longitudinal trajectories capturing the mobility capacity of Brazilian children and adolescents with CP for each level of the GMFCS; (iii) to document longitudinal trajectories in the performance of activities and participation of Brazilian children and adolescents with CP across two functional classification systems: GMFCS and MACS (Manual Abilities Classification System); (iv) to document longitudinal trajectories of neuromusculoskeletal and movement-related functions and exercise tolerance functions of Brazilian children and adolescents with CP for each level of the GMFCS; and (v) to explore interrelationships among all ICF framework components and the five functional classification systems in Brazilian children and adolescents with CP.Methods: We propose a multi-center, longitudinal, prospective cohort study with 750 Brazilian children and adolescents with CP from across the country. Participants will be classified according to five functional classification systems. Contextual factors, activity and participation, and body functions will be evaluated longitudinally and prospectively for four years. Nonlinear mixed-effects models for each of the five GMFCS and MACS levels will be created using test scores over time to create prognosis curves. To explore the interrelationships among ICF components, a multiple linear regression will be performed.Discussion: The findings from this study will describe the level and nature of activities and levels of participation of children and youth with CP in Brazil.
