This study focussed on the development of fully biodegradable composites based on polybutylene succinate (PBS) in combination with raw materials from different processing stages of the pulp and paper industry. Sulfite pulp (SP), kraft pulp (KP) and screened sludge residue (SL) from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) were investigated as reinforcing fibres contributing to a circular economy. We report a comparative study of the physicochemical properties and mechanical performance of PBS composites reinforced with these cellulosic raw fibres and commercial pure microcrystalline cellulose (MC). The composites were characterised in tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus of elasticity, water absorption and wettability. The incorporation of the fibres into the polymer matrix was also investigated using torque rheometry. Critical concentrations were obtained with maximum incorporation in the range of 15–20 wt% for SP/KP and 25–30 wt% for SL. SP and KP composites showed at least as good physicochemical and mechanical properties as MC at the concentrations studied (0–20 wt%). SP-composites showed the highest tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. It was shown that these fibres from the pulp and paper industry can be used as reinforcement for PBS matrices without additional chemical purification and provide a valuable alternative to commercial microcrystalline cellulose. Nucleic acid amplification is a sensitive and powerful tool for allergen detection. However, it is limited due to the relatively cumbersome methods required to extract nucleic acids from single plant seed allergen (e.g. peanut and soybean). In view of this, an approach of extracting nucleic acid with untreated glass-fiber paper (paper-based microfluidics) was applied for nucleic acid capture and purification from plant seed allergen and commercial products. After cut by hollow cylindrical cutter, a certain size the paper chip it used to absorb DNA. And this paper-based microfluidics with DNA was directly applied for amplification by loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). To evaluate the adsorption performance of paper chip to DNA, CTAB and SDS method were used as comparisons. From amplification results, the established technique has good specificity, high repeatability (C.V. values are 4.41% and 6.17% for peanut and soybean) and favorable sensitivity (7.39 ng/μL or peanut and 6.6 ng/μL for soybean), and successfully used for commercial products (2 kinds of candy and 2 kinds of cakes containing peanut, and 2 kinds of drinks, candy and 2 kinds of biscuits containing soybean). Renewable biomass-based activated carbon fiber paper (ACFP) possesses a three-dimensional network porous structure for high-efficient toxic gas purification. However, intelligently building high catalytic activity biomass-based carbon materials with superior flexibility remains a significant challenge. Herein, a series of paper-based catalysts (MnO 2 /ACFP) with varying MnO 2 loadings were fabricated by combining MnO 2 -loaded ACF and softwood (Pinales) fiber via a wet-papermaking process. The precursor derives from abundant and green biomass, meanwhile, the channels of plant fiber facilitate gas flow and the effective dispersion of active sites. Noteworthy, the introduction of softwood fiber imparts flexibility to the catalyst, enabling it to be folded, wound, and bent without compromising mechanical strength, thus exhibiting excellent processability. Formaldehyde (HCHO) removal in a static system was applied to evaluate their reactivities. Among all, MnO 2 /ACFP-1.7 (12.22 wt% Mn) shows 100 % removal of HCHO in 1 h with a turnover frequency value of 0.01526 min−1, being more than 10 times that of the bulk MnO 2 particles. The underlying mechanism for the enhanced catalytic performance can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of its stronger gas capture ability together with more exposed active sites. This work provides insight into the design of a flexible and environmentally friendly catalyst for the degradation of organic contaminants. Cellulose nanocrystals have been evaluated as reinforcement material in polymeric matrices due to their potential to improve the mechanical, optical, and dielectric properties of these matrixes. This work describes how high pressure defibrillation and chemical purification affect the sludge fiber morphology from micro to nanoscale. Microscopy techniques and X-ray diffraction were used to study the structure and properties of the prepared nanofibers and composites. Microscopic studies showed that the used individualization processes lead to a unique morphology of interconnected web-like structure of sludge fibers. The nanofibers are bundles of cellulose fibers having widths (5 to 30 nm) and estimated lengths of several micrometers. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract: In this research, the pilot plant of a hybrid microfiltration (MF) and electrodialysis (ED) system was designed, constructed and employed successfully to remove the color and contaminants of paper industry wastewater. Microfiltration module comprising of ceramic membrane was used at constant pressure as a pretreatment step for the ED pilot scale unit operation. The ED stack consisted of 11 cation-exchange and 10 anion-exchange membrane pairs. Tubular ceramic module was employed to pre-filter the wastewater at 60°C and ambient temperature. Electrodialysis was successfully applied for the treatment of paper industry effluent for the first time with MF as a pretreatment step. The combined hybrid process at the applied potential of 50V showed a low content of total dissolved solids (TDS) of 546mg/L, conductivity of 0.61mS/cm, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of less than 20mg/L. The hybrid MF/ED module used in this research gave a recovery and reuse of more than 90% of original wastewater. The proposed pilot plant was found to be more advantageous, since the ceramic membrane module used could withstand higher temperature of the discharged effluent and given the permeate that is free from the suspended particles of colloidal nature. Five bacterial strains were isolated and purified (CSA101 to CSA105) from the sediment core of the effluent released from the Century Pulp and Paper Mill Ltd., India. These strains were grown in minimal salt medium (MSM) containing pulp (10% as a carbon source). The production of lignin peroxidase, CMCase, Fpase, and xylanase together with protein and reducing sugar by all bacterial strains was observed. All of the bacterial isolates responded differently with respect to growth and ligninocellulolytic enzyme production. The maximum lignin peroxidase (LiP) was obtained from the cell extract of Bacillus sp. (CSA105) strain, which was used for purification, fractionation and characterization. The culture filtrate from Bacillus sp. (CSA105) was purified with ammonium sulfate precipitation. Crude protein was desalted by dialyzing with Tris buffer. The lignolytic enzyme produced in the liquid medium was fractionated by gel filtration on Sephadex G-100. In the present study, 12.4-fold purification of LiP enzyme was obtained and 35.85% yield of lignin peroxidase was achieved in the cell extract of Bacillus sp. (CSA105). Lignin peroxidase enzyme plays an important role in lignin degradation process. The ligninolytic enzymes were produced by all of the bacterial strains but maximum lignin peroxidase activity was found in cell extract of CSA105. In this paper, the effects of post annealing on the structural, chemical and electrical properties of tantalum (Ta) capped IZTO films were examined for use as the channel in thin‐film transistors (TFTs). The onset crystallization temperature of amorphous IZTO was found to be ≥ 700 °C, which is not suitable for glass or plastic substrate‐based display devices. New crystallization method involving the catalytic Ta capping and subsequent post annealing was proposed for the IZTO material system at a low temperature of 200 °C. The TFTs with Ta‐assisted crystallized IZTO channel exhibited a high field‐effect mobility of 60.3 cm2/Vs, subthreshold swing of 0.20 V/decade, threshold voltage of ‐0.39 V, and Ion/off ratio of ~108, which was superior to the control device without Ta‐assisted crystallization. The reason for this high performance is discussed on basis of the lattice ordering and chemical purification of IZTO channel layer. Existence of two dimensional grain boundary defects as a crystallization of IZTO channel layer was found to hardly affect the charge carrier transport, suggesting that they are electrically inactive. Corrosion has always been an important factor affecting the life of steel, which causes huge economic losses every year. How to improve the corrosion resistance of steel has always been a research focus. Adding rare earth elements into steel is an important method to improve the corrosion resistance of steel. In this paper, the effects of rare earth elements on steel are summarized, including the purification of molten steel, modification and modification of inclusions, improvement of grain boundaries by solid solution strengthening, the influence of phase transformation and the refinement of microstructure, and reduction in C and N desolubilization. On this basis, the progress of research on the corrosion resistance mechanisms of rare earth steel is summarized, focusing on rare earth-modified inclusions. This includes the changes in composition and sizes of inclusions by rare earth addition, promoting the transformation of MnS and Al2O3 in rare earth inclusions with regular shapes, smaller sizes and better performance, or composite rare earth inclusions. The corrosion pits that form in the early stages of corrosion are shallow in depth, fewer in number and light in corrosion degree. The effects of rare earth materials on the rust layer include: rare earth promotes the formation of a more stable corrosion product α-FeOOH, and rare earth promotes the formation of a dense rust layer, which covers the surface of the matrix and hinders the transmission of corrosion ions. The protective effect of the rare earth atomic layer on the substrate and the corrosion inhibition effect of rare earth ions are formed by the segregation of rare earth at the interface. In the end, the existing problems in the research into rare earth steel and future research directions are briefly put forward, including improving the addition process of rare earth steel, theoretical guidance on enhancing the corrosion resistance mechanism of rare earth steel, and extending the research from La, Ce, and Y steel to more rare earth steels. Metallic materials play a vital role in the economic life of modern societies; hence, research contributions are sought on fresh developments that enhance our understanding of the fundamental aspects of the relationships between processing, properties, and microstructures. Disciplines in the metallurgical field ranging from processing, mechanical behavior, phase transitions, microstructural evolution, and nanostructures, as well as unique metallic properties, inspire general and scholarly interest among the scientific community. Three of the most important elements are included in unit operations in non-ferrous extractive metallurgy: (1) hydrometallurgy (leaching under atmospheric and high-pressure conditions, mixing of a solution with a gas and mechanical parts, neutralization of a solution, precipitation and cementation of metals from a solution aiming at purification, and compound productions during crystallization), (2) pyrometallurgy (roasting, smelting, and refining), and (3) electrometallurgy (aqueous electrolysis and molten salt electrolysis). Advances in our understanding of unit operations in non-ferrous extractive metallurgy are required to develop new research strategies for the treatment of primary and secondary materials and their application in industry. The present paper reports a sustainable raw material obtained from the by-products derived from the industrial production of bergamot (Citrus × Bergamia Risso & Poiteau) essential oils. The procedure to obtain the raw material is designed to maintain as much of the bioactive components as possible and to avoid expensive chemical purification. It consists of spray-drying the fruit juice obtained by squeezing the fruits, which is mixed with the aqueous extract of the pulp, i.e., the solid residue remained after fruit pressing. The resulting powder bergamot juice (PBJ) contains multiple bioactive components, in particular, among others, soluble fibers, polyphenols and amino-acid betaines, such as stachydrine and betonicine. LC-MS analysis identified 86 compounds, with hesperetin, naringenin, apigenin and eridictyol glucosides being the main components. In the second part of the paper, dose-dependent anti-inflammatory activity of PBJ and of stachydrine was found, but neither of the compounds were effective in activating Nrf2. PBJ was then found to be effective in an in vivo model of a metabolic syndrome induced by a high-sugar, high-fat (HSF) diet and evidenced by a significant increase of the values related to a set of parameters: blood glucose, triglycerides, insulin resistance, systolic blood pressure, visceral adipose tissue and adiposity index. PBJ, when given to control rats, did not significantly change these values; in contrast, they were found to be greatly affected in rats receiving an HSF diet. The in vivo effect of PBJ can be ascribed not only to bergamot polyphenols with well-known anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and lipid-regulating effects, but also to the dietary fibers and to the non-phenolic constituents, such as stachydrine. Moreover, since PBJ was found to affect energy homeostasis and to regulate food intake, a mechanism on the regulation of energy homeostasis through leptin networking should also be considered and deserves further investigation. Teleportation is an important protocol in quantum communication. Realizing teleportation between arbitrary nodes in multi-hop quantum networks is of great value. Most of the existing multi-hop quantum networks are based on Bell states or Greeberger–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) states. Bell state is more susceptible to noise than GHZ states after purification, but generating a GHZ state consumes more basic states. In this paper, a new quantum multi-hop network scheme is proposed to improve the interference immunity of the network and avoid large consumption at the same time. Teleportation is realized in a network based on entanglement swapping, fusion, and purification. To ensure the robustness of the system, we also design the purification algorithm. The simulation results show the successful establishment of entanglement with high fidelity. Cirq is used to verify the network on the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) platform. The robustness of the fusion scheme is better than the Bell states scheme, especially with the increasing number of nodes. Salient object detection (SOD) networks are vulnerable to adversarial attacks. As adversarial training is computationally expensive for SOD, existing defense methods instead adopt a noise-against-noise strategy that disrupts adversarial perturbation and restores the image either in input or feature space. However, their limited learning capacity and the need for network modifications limit their applicability. In recent years, the popular diffusion model coincides with the existing defense idea and exhibits excellent purification performance, but there still remains an accuracy gap between the saliency results generated from the purified images and the benign images. In this paper, we propose a Robust and Refined (RoRe) SOD defense framework based on the diffusion model to simultaneously achieve adversarial robustness as well as improved accuracy for benign and purified images. Our proposed RoRe defense consists of three modules: purification, adversarial detection, and refinement. The purification module leverages the powerful generation capability of the diffusion model to purify perturbed input images to achieve robustness. The adversarial detection module utilizes the guidance classifier in the diffusion model for multi-step voting classification. By combining this classifier with a similarity condition, precise adversarial detection can be achieved, providing the possibility of regaining the original accuracy for benign images. The refinement module uses a simple and effective UNet to enhance the accuracy of purified images. The experiments demonstrate that RoRe achieves superior robustness over state-of-the-art methods while maintaining high accuracy for benign images. The influence of process parameters in the three-stage purification of aluminate solution from the Bayer process and aluminum hydroxide was considered in this paper. One of the ways of purification is treating the aluminate solution in order to reduce the concentrations in the starting raw material (solution) and then treating the aluminum hydroxide at a certain temperature and time in order to obtain an alumina precursor of adequate quality. The purification process itself is divided into three phases. The first phase involves the treatment of sodium aluminate with lime in order to primarily remove Ca2+ and (SiO3)2− impurities. Phase II aims to remove impurities of Zn2+, Fe2+, and Cu2+ by treatment with controlled precipitation using specially prepared crystallization centers. In Phase III, Na+ is removed by the process of hydrothermal washing of Al2O3 ∙ 3H2O. In this work, parameters such as temperature (T), reaction time (t), and concentration of lime (c) were studied in order to remove the mentioned impurities and obtain the purest possible product that would be an adequate precursor for special types of alumina. This paper is about the development of a hybrid renewable energy–powered Laboratory–Scale plastic bottle waste converter for the conversion (pyrolysis) of plastic (PET) bottle wastes into useful petroleum products such as Diesel, kerosene, gasoline, etc. Waste plastic disposal and indiscriminate use of fossil fuels have caused environmental and health concerns in our societies. This is not unconnected with the ever–increasing consumption of products packaged in plastics by the teeming population the world over. Plastics are non–biodegradable products that pollute our environments, clog our canals and drainages, and eventually end up in the seas where they pollute and affect marine ecological systems. The process of converting waste plastic bottles into useful petroleum products is one of the viable solutions for the recycling of plastic bottle waste and turning the problems of plastic bottle careless disposals into an opportunity to make wealth from waste and also save the ecosystem. Heat is provided externally to the heating chamber that runs at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen by a DC heating element. The waste plastic bottles are shredded to reduce their volume–to–weight ratio and filled into the heating chamber where it is subjected to excessive heat to depolymerize, pyrolyze, and thermal cracking. The resulting gases are passed through a condenser to obtain different products such as petrol, kerosene, diesel, etc depending on the operating temperature of the chamber. The production of regenerated cellulosic fibres, such as viscose, modal and lyocell, is based mainly on the use of dissolving wood pulp as raw material. Enzymatic processes are an excellent alternative to conventional chemical routes in the production of dissolving pulp, in terms of energy efficiency, reagent consumption and pulp yield. The two main characteristics of a dissolving pulp are the cellulose purity and the molecular weight, both of which can be controlled with the aid of enzymes. A purification process for paper-grade kraft pulp has been proposed, based on the use of xylanases in combination with hot and cold caustic extraction, without the conventional pre-hydrolysis step before kraft pulping. This enzyme aided purification allowed the production of a dissolving pulp that met the specifications for the manufacture of viscose, < 3% xylan, > 92% ISO brightness and 70% Fock's reactivity. Endoglucanases (EGs) can efficiently reduce the average molecular weight of the cellulose while simultaneously increasing the pulp reactivity for viscose production. It is shown in this study that lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases act synergistically with EGs in the modification of bleached dissolving pulp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The separation and purification of bio-based chemicals from conversion processes often contribute substantially to bioprocessing costs, and for many biochemicals produced through fermentation, solventbased liquid--liquid extraction (LLE) is a common separations strategy for in situ product recovery (ISPR). Many in situ LLE-based separations for biochemicals are often challenged by emulsion formation between the immiscible aqueous and organic phases. Typically, membrane contactors have been used to overcome emulsion formation, with the aqueous and organic phases coming into contact in the membrane contactor pores, but these unit operations require a large membrane area to compensate for their limited effective interfacial area. In this study, we show that a hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane-based emulsion separator (MBES) enables continuous LLE for the recovery of an exemplary fermentation product, butyric acid, with substantially improved throughput relative to a membrane contactor. With a membrane permeate flux of 290 L m-2 h-1, the overall butyric acid flux of the single-stage MBES system was calculated to be 1450 g m-2 h-1, which is substantially higher than the 9 g m-2 h-1 achievable with a membrane contactor. At an equivalent butyric acid throughput, process modeling estimates that MBES-assisted LLE can enable a 55% and 91% reduction in process costs (the sum of CAPEX and OPEX) and greenhouse gas emissions, respectively, compared to a membrane contactor due to a ~160-fold decrease in the required membrane area. Although membrane fouling from cellular debris led to reduced membrane flux and phase separation efficiency, common fouling mitigation strategies including the incorporation of ultrafiltration and periodic membrane backwashing effectively recovered the membrane performance. The geological and environmental applications of tin (Sn) isotopes have been hindered by the shortcomings of chemical purification, as severe loss of Sn would occur during sample preparation (evaporation and re-dissolution) and column separation, triggering isotope measurement bias. In this study, we develop a novel and robust separation method to purify Sn from natural samples for accurate isotope measurements. The protocol is established by combining two chromatographic columns loaded with AG 1-X8 and AG 50W-X12 resins, and optimizing the sample evaporation and re-dissolution procedures. The method is proven to efficiently eliminate the main interferents such as Ag, Zn, Mo, Cd and Sb and results in low procedural blank (0.54 ± 0.21 ng, n = 3), quantitative recovery (95--102%, n = 32) and good external precision (δ120Sn of 0.02--0.04‰, in 55 measurements) for isotope measurement. The protocol is further applied to seven geological and environmental reference materials (BCR-2, BHVO-2, AGV-2, JG-2, AC-E, PACs-2 and GSS 7) and new values are reported for both odd (δ119Sn and δ117Sn) and even (δ120Sn and δ122Sn) Sn isotope ratios. Green tea is one of people's favorite drinks. However, pesticide residues in green tea can cause harm to the human body, and therefore, detection of pesticide residues in green tea is very important. In recent years, the detection of pesticide residues in tea has become a research hotspot. In this paper, a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) detection method of tolfenpyrad pesticide residues in green tea was established by using acetonitrile extractant, dispersive solid-phase extraction purification, temperature programming and application retention time lock with the database. After the sample was extracted with acetonitrile, then the sample was purified by QuEChERS extraction purification tube, afterward isomer B was used as the internal standard for the determination by multiple reaction monitoring mode (MRM) of GC-MS/MS. The results indicated that the experimental data accorded with the criterion on quality control of laboratoris(chemical testing of food), and the requirements of recovery, calibration curve, precision.This method was used to detect tolfenpyrad residues in actual green tea samples in multiple batches, and the satisfactory results were obtained. Point of care testing (POCT) of nucleic acids holds significant importance in the realm of infectious disease prevention and control, as well as the advancement of personalized precision medicine. Nevertheless, conventional nucleic acid testing methods continue to face challenges such as prolonged detection times and dependence on extensive specialized equipment and personnel, rendering them unsuitable for point of care applications. Here, we proposed an innovative active centrifugal microfluidic system (ACMS) for automatic nucleic acid extraction, encompassing modules for active valve control and magnetic control. An on-chip centrifugal puncture valve (PV) was devised based on the elastic tolerance differences between silicone membranes and tinfoils to release pre-embedded liquid reagents on demand. Furthermore, we have utilized the returnable valve (RV) technology to accurately control the retention and release of liquids, leveraging the high elastic tolerance of the silicone membrane. By incorporating an online controllable magnetic valve, we have achieved controlled and rapid aggregation and dispersion of magnetic beads. The final chip encapsulates multiple reagents and magnetic beads necessary for nucleic acid extraction. Upon sample addition and loading into the instrument, automated on-chip sample loading and nucleic acid extraction, purification, and collection can be accomplished within 30 minutes, halving the overall operation time and even increasing the efficiency of pseudovirus extraction by three orders of magnitude. Consequently, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR amplification has successfully detected multiple targets of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (with an impressive detection limit as low as 10 copies per µL), along with targeted sequencing analysis yielding a conformity rate of 99%. Aluminum nitride (AlN) has attracted huge attention in new energy vehicle, communication equipment fields, due to the high-thermal conductivity and reliable insulating ability. One of the most crucial factors is the preparation of high-performance AlN powders, and more significantly, the two-dimensional nanostructure would change the phonon vibration mode and transport process, bringing in the novel heat conduction and electricity properties. In this paper, kilogram of two-dimensional aluminum nitride nanosheets (AlNNS) with thicknesses around 30 nm and particle sizes around 400 nm were prepared by a new strategy for the nano sanding process, in which they still keep high purity (impurity content ppm grade) without further purification. Furthermore, the technological parameters of the sanding time and line speed are found as the key factors, that would affect the transformation process fro m hexagonal AlN into super-thin AlNNS. The morphology of the nanosheets is more complete at the line speed of 8 m/s. In addition, AlNNS have an increase of 7% in thermal conductivity (at 50 °C) compared to that of raw powders. Moreover, AlNNS have stronger sintering activity due to the larger specific surface area, in which show an increase of 16.8% in shrinkage. Therefore, AlNNS would represent excellent physical properties more than thermal conductivity, providing a new dimension research in high-thermal conductivity ceramics. Last but not least, nano sanding strategy as a purely physical process, avoids the subsequent chemical purification process, and has the advantages of simple and efficient, low energy consumption and environmental protection. The study of kinetic sorptive effects on the transport phenomena of reactive solute has numerous real-world applications, including in the industrial and environmental sectors. These kinds of investigations become more realistic when an oscillatory pressure gradient with both the reversible and irreversible reactions at the channel walls is considered in a magnetohydrodynamics flow. In the past, Ng and Yip [J. Fluid Mech. 446, 321–345 (2001)] studied the effect of sorptive phase exchange at boundaries on the solute transport phenomena in an open-channel flow using Mei's multiple-scale homogenization technique. They considered fluid flows without magnetic field and boundary absorption. This work uses the above-mentioned method to investigate the phase exchange kinetics of Taylor dispersion phenomena in a two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics fluid flowing through a parallel channel. The paper discusses how various parameters and dimensionless numbers, such as the Hartmann, oscillatory Reynolds, and Damkohler, affect the flow velocity, transport coefficient, multi-dimensional concentration distributions, and transverse variation rate. Due to the strong magnetic field, the flow velocity and Taylor dispersivity are adversely affected and conspicuously reduced. Additionally, for large Damkohler numbers, the total dispersion coefficient and the Taylor dispersion coefficient both decrease. However, the longitudinal concentration distribution rises with the Hartmann number and partition coefficient. It is worth noting that in the presence of unequal boundary absorption, there is no occurrence of transverse symmetry in solute concentration at any given time. Controlling various processes of tracer dispersion in environmental systems, especially water purification and the chemical industry, may benefit from these intriguing findings. As a non-metallic material, high-purity graphite has been widely used in many high-tech fields and has become an important raw material for its production and processing. As the purity of graphite increases, its application value will also increase. Therefore, it is necessary to purify graphite. In this study, the natural flake graphite is purified by the additive-assisted alkali melting-acid leaching process to produce high-purity graphite. Alkali melting is the main process in the alkali-acid process. Therefore, this paper is mainly to explore the removal mechanism of impurities in the alkali melting process. First, the influence of various factors on the purification efficiency in the process of alkali melting is investigated. The fixed carbon content of graphite can reach 99.9815% and 99.9569%, respectively, when 4% (accounting for graphite mass) of sodium metaborate and potassium pyrosulfate is added as additives under the best process conditions. The results show that the crystal structure and morphology of graphite have no obvious changes. Compared with the traditional alkaline melting-acid leaching process, the carbon content of natural flake graphite can be increased to a higher level by an auxiliary alkaline melting-acid leaching process. Photocatalytic reaction takes place on the surface of the catalyst, the crystal plane engineering which can adjust and optimize the surface atomic ordering and electronic energy band structure has been widely studied, considering the microchemical environment changes caused by defects on different surfaces, the combination of crystal plane engineering and defect engineering is expected to become a promising strategy to greatly improve the performance of photocatalysis. In this paper, we introduce 2,2'‐Bipyridyl to induce oxygen vacancy in the synthesis of highly exposed {100} faceted TiO2 nanorods, and obtain oxygen‐rich TiO2 nanomaterials. Benefit from the synergistic effect of high‐energy crystal plane and oxygen vacancy, 96.8 % Rhodamine B (10 mg ⋅ L−1) is degraded after irradiation of 30 min in T100‐VO photocatalytic system. There has been a growing interest in using cadmium (Cd) isotopes to trace the source of Cd contamination and Cd cycling in the Earth surface. Yet it remains technically challenging to precisely and efficiently determine the Cd isotopic compositions of samples with extremely low Cd concentrations due to the imperfect separation of Cd from the matrix and the interference caused by resin-derived organics when TRU Spec resin was used. In this study, we present a two-stage column chromatography system (AG-MP-1M resin + UTEVA resin) for Cd purification. Here, a Prefilter resin combined with UTEVA resin effectively purifies Cd from Sn after the separation of Cd by AG-MP-1M column while keeping the phosphorous organic compounds to an acceptable level. In contrast to TRU Spec resin, which is prone to leaking through the Prefilter resin, we find that UTEVA resin is effectively retained by the Prefilter resin, thus avoiding the P-related anomalous shifts in the Cd isotope measurement (P/Cd < 1). UTEVA resin also exhibits a comparable capacity for purifying Cd from Sn and Mo when compared to TRU Spec resin. The recovery of the two-stage column system is generally higher than 99% and the procedural blank accounting for sample digestion and chemical purification is lower than 20 pg. The Cd isotopic compositions of several reference materials are determined using double spike MC-ICP-MS, with a 111Cd–113Cd double spike pair optimized for the 111Cd, 112Cd, 113Cd, and 114Cd inversion. The δ114/110Cd values of these reference materials relative to NIST SRM 3108 agree within analytical uncertainty with previous studies. The long-term external precision of δ114/110Cd determined based on replicated measurements of BCR-2 is 0.04‰ (n = 10, 2 SD) for a minimum sample size of 10 ng. Our study thus provides an efficient two-stage column system for determining the Cd isotopic compositions of geological samples with relatively low Cd concentrations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bacterial infections remain a serious and pervasive threat to human health. Bacterial antibiotic resistance, in particular, lowers treatment efficacy and increases mortality. The development of nanomaterials has made it possible to address issues in the biomedical, energy storage, and environmental fields. This paper reports the successful synthesis of CeO2−SnO2 composite nanofibers via an electrospinning method using polyacrylonitrile polymer. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy assessments showed that the average diameter of CeO2−SnO2 nanofibers was 170 nm. The result of photocatalytic degradation for methylene blue dye displayed enhanced efficiency of the CeO2−SnO2 composite. The addition of SnO2 to CeO2 resulted in the enhancement of the light absorption property and enriched charge transmission of photoinduced electron–hole duos, which conspicuously contributed to momentous photoactivity augmentation. Composite nanofibers exhibited higher specific capacitance which may be accredited to the synergism between CeO2 and SnO2 particles in nanofibers. Furthermore, antibacterial activity was screened against Escherichia coli and CeO2−SnO2 composite nanofibers depicted excellent activity. The findings of this work point to new possibilities as an electrode material in energy storage systems and as a visible-light-active photocatalyst for the purification of chemical and biological contaminants, which would substantially benefit environmental remediation processes. Environmental pollution caused by human activities, the harmful mixture of gases (CO, CO2, NO2, SO2, PM), resulting from industrial production processes and vehicular traffic is a global environmental health problem in urban and rural areas; it affects vulnerable groups, children and older adults, affecting respiratory, cardiovascular and cancerous diseases. In Ecuador, in the city of Cuenca, among the main sources of contamination is the vehicle fleet in high-traffic areas and avenues; in addition to the industrial zone, that coexists with the city within the urban area in the northwest zone, which generates contamination to properties located around these strips. This paper presents the development of a purifying element based on the "evolutionary development" model. It begins by analyzing and studying concepts of lattices, ionization, and air purification, among others; subsequently, existing air purification systems are investigated in detail and a prototype of an ionizing lattice is generated, whose function is to filter polluted air when installed as an aesthetic part in buildings. Finally, the purification performance of gases and particles typical of the electrostatic precipitator (ESP) was tested by means of air quality stations. By means of a type of correlational applied research, the similarity between external and internal gases and particulate matter was verified, obtaining, as a result, the effective reduction of the same; decreasing by 4.15% of CO2, 30% of CO and 57% of particulate matter. With this analysis, it is concluded that the prototype of the ionization air purifying lattice can be efficient with some of the gases against particulate pollution in domestic interiors, positively influencing the health of the inhabitants of a building. Recently, there is a growing awareness of air pollution caused by fine dust and the spread of viruses in the air. In particular, in multi-use facilities where a lot of people reside, air purification systems are becoming essential. In this paper, we propose an air purification system design that can sterilize and purify airborne viruses and bacteria generated in public facilities. The proposed air purification system purifies and sterilizes air with UV-C LEDs and an internal structure that delays the flow of air. In addition, wireless control of the system is possible on a smart device using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. As a result of the experiment, the airborne virus reduction rate was 83.3% and the airborne bacteria reduction rate was 84.2%, confirming the performance of the proposed air purification system. The proposed system is a wall-mounted system that is easy to install in multi-use facilities, and is expected to be used as a measure to reduce the spread of fine dust and viruses. Cancer continues to be a leading cause of global death despite decades of research on its prevention and cure. In the mid-twentieth century, anecdotal evidence began to accumulate that certain chemicals might be cancer-causing and this was followed up with animal model studies. These suspected substances were termed carcinogens and among those investigated were N-nitrosamines (or simply nitrosamines). Interest in nitrosamines is now more than a century old and research continues to explore their biology. Since the 1950's, steady progress has been made in perfecting chemistry techniques to label interesting compounds with 14C or tritium. However, there have been relatively few reports concerning the synthesis of nitrosamines with these radioisotopes, providing substances which could be valuable in advancing key nitrosamine biology research. Most of the previous literature examples of 14C or tritium labelled nitrosamines related to very specific compounds lacking wider interest and relevance. Also, the resulting products were usually of low specific activity. This paper outlines strategies to accomplish the labelling of more broadly relevant nitrosamines with 14C or tritium at high specific activity. Particularly, a library of 14C labelled nitrosamines with diverse structures was created. Exemplary experimental details are provided for the synthesis of [14C] N-nitrosodiethanolamine as well as the repurification of [ethyl-1-14C] N-nitroso-N-ethylurea. The storage and general stability of 14C nitrosamines is also discussed. Finally, as an example of a typical strategy to prepare a nitrosamine labelled with tritium, the synthesis of [3, 4-3H] N-nitrosopyrrolidine is described in detail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Road icing in winter brings challenges to traffic safety, and microwave heating and deicing technology is an effective method with the advantages of high efficiency and environmental protection. Magnetite has been widely used as a microwave-absorbing material in pavement. In this paper, magnetite powder formed by crushing natural magnetite and high-purity Fe3O4 powder after purification were mixed to replace mineral powder, and the magnetite aggregate was used to replace the limestone aggregate with the same particle size to enhance the asphalt mixtures' microwave absorption capacity. The effect of microwave heating time and microwave power on the heating of the asphalt mixtures was studied, and the heating performance of different thicknesses of the asphalt mixtures under microwave radiation was evaluated. The heating performance of the mixtures under different initial temperatures and ice layer thicknesses was also assessed. The results showed that the addition of the magnetite powder–Fe3O4 powder and the magnetite aggregate significantly enhanced the heating performance of the asphalt mixtures by microwave heating. The replacement of the magnetite powder–Fe3O4 powder, the microwave heating time, and the microwave power had positive effects on the heating efficiency of the asphalt mixtures. Moreover, the thinner asphalt mixtures had a better heating performance. The heating and deicing performance of the mixtures decreased with a decline in initial temperature. Driven by various environmental and economic factors, it is emerging to adopt an efficient and sustainable strategy to recycle carbon fibers (rCFs) from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) wastes and reuse them in high-value applications. This review summarized the latest progress of CFRP waste recycling methods (including mechanical, chemical, and thermal methods), discussed their advantages and disadvantages, influence parameters and possible environmental effects, and their potential effects on the mechanical and surface chemical properties of rCFs. In addition, the latest optimization schemes of leading recycling technologies were detailed. According to the literature, CFs are the key points in the structural support of semiconductor-based recyclable photocatalytic systems and the enhancement of performance, which means that rCFs have high reuse potential in sustainable photocatalysis. Therefore, this paper also emphasized the possibility and potential value of reusing recovered fibers for developing recyclable photocatalytic products, which may be a new way of reuse in environmental purification often ignored by researchers and decision-makers in the field of CFs. This paper provides rigorous process simulation, optimization and assessment for a novel NH 3 deep purification process using IL. The process was designed and investigated by simulation and optimization using ionic liquid [C 4 im][NTF 2 ] as absorbent. Three objective functions, total purification cost (TPC), total process CO 2 emission (TPCOE) and thermal efficiency (η eff) were employed to optimize the absorption process. Process simulation and optimization results indicate that at same purification standard and recovery rate, the novel process can achieve lower cost and CO 2 emission compared to benchmark process. After process optimization, the optimal functions can achieve 0.02726 $/Nm3 (TPC), 311.27 kg CO 2 /hr (TPCOE), and 52.21% (η eff) for enhanced process. Moreover, compared with conventional process, novel process could decrease over $ 3 million of purification cost and 10000 tons of CO 2 emission during the life cycle. The results provide a novel strategy and guidance for deep purification of NH 3 capture. Worldwide lithium demand has surged in recent years due to increased production of Li‐ion batteries for electric vehicles and stationary storage. Li supply and production will need to increase such that the transition towards increased electrification in the energy sector does not become cost prohibitive. Many countries have taken policy steps such as listing Li as a critical mineral. Current commercial Li mining is mostly from dedicated mine sources, including ores, clays, and brines. The conventional ways to extract Li+ from those resources are through chemical processing and includes steps of calcination, leaching, precipitation, and purification. The environmental and economic sustainability of conventional Li processing has recently received increased scrutiny. Routes such as direct Li+ extraction may provide advantages relative to conventional Li+ extraction technologies, and one possible route to direct Li+ extraction includes leveraging intercalation materials. Intercalation material processing has recently demonstrated high selectivity towards Li+ as opposed to other cations. Reviews and reports of direct Li+ extraction with intercalation materials are limited, even as this technology has started to show promise in smaller‐scale demonstrations. This paper will review selective Li+ extraction via intercalation materials, including both electrochemical and chemical methods to drive Li+ in and out, and efforts to characterize the Li+ insertion/deinsertion processes. This paper discusses the porphyry copper mineralization in A‐type granitoids from the Precambrian shield of the Karbi Hills (Mikir Hills), NE India. The prospective zone lies in the Kuthori‐Bagori of Kaziranga locality of the north Karbi Hills. The host granitoids are characterized by intermediate to high SiO2 (66.30–72.97 wt.%), Na2O (up to 4.90 wt.%), Ba (up to 1,943 ppm), Zr (up to 410 ppm), Y (up to 70 ppm) and Al2O3 (up to 14.77 wt.%) with low concentrations of CaO (up to 1.53 wt.%), and Cu (up to 32.41 ppm) which suggest a consistent granodiorite‐monzogranite host composition, an intraplate emplacement, A‐type chemistry, shoshonitic to high‐K calc‐alkaline and a predominant metaluminous character. Minerals in the investigated granitoids show hypogene alteration features similar to ideal porphyry style mineralization. Remnants of early chalcopyrite‐bornite‐magnetite (Magnetite‐I) veins have been preserved in the distant propylitic zone. The central core zone of potassic alteration shows the dominance of pyrite‐chalcopyrite‐magnetite (Magnetite‐II) assemblages. Mineral chemistry confirms the presence of two types of magnetites: magmatic (Mag‐I) and hydrothermal (Mag‐II). Mag‐I is octahedral, less commonly cubic, or irregular. It has a porous core with trellis‐type ilmenite exsolution lamellae. Mag‐II is non‐porous, devoid of ilmenite exsolution lamellae, has irregular to distinctly octahedral crystal habit and contains micro‐inclusions of pyrite, chalcopyrite, aluminosilicates, manganite and apatite. The progressive chemical purification of igneous magnetite, exacerbated by hydrothermal re‐equilibration, has resulted in a significant reduction in trace element contents such as Ti, Al, Mg, Zn and Cr, and a significant increase in iron content from 89 to ~94 wt.%. A combination of [Ni/(Cr + Mn) vs. Ti + V], and [(Ca + Al + Mn) vs. Ti + V] variation diagrams and upper threshold concentrations for the Kuthori‐Bagori ore effectively separates Mag‐I and Mag‐II. Our field, petrographic and geochemical data indicate that the Kuthori‐Bagori of Kaziranga granitoid of the Karbi Hills (Mikir Hills) in NE India is an ideal location for porphyry copper mineralization. The preparation of eco-friendly carbon-rich (biochar) materials by thermal pyrolysis of waste biomass has been recognized as one of the most economical and effective strategies for gas purification in recent years. Through control of synthesis and activation methods, the surface features and catalytic sites in biochar can be engineered for diverse heterogeneous catalytic reactions. Nonetheless, its commercial utilization in air pollution control has yet been limited to a large extent because of (i) the shortage of databases related to the actual catalytic performance of biochar and (ii) the complexity involved in industrial upscaling. Herein, the merits and demerits of biomass-to-biochar catalyst conversion are discussed, along with the factors to consider in the synthesis stage for enhancing catalytic activities toward air purification applications. This paper also offers an in-depth evaluation of the techno-economic and environmental aspects of biochar-based catalysts and their catalytic reactions for air pollution control and energy production. Carbon nanotubes, as a successful conducting agent for power lithium ion cathode, have been applied in a large scale. Among the production of carbon nanotubes, the purification of carbon nanotubes is an important step for the application in lithium ion power battery. In this paper, physical purification, instead of chemical purification, of as-carbon nanotube soot in an Acheson furnace was investigated. The carbon nanotubes were first purified in an Acheson furnace at 3 000 °C and 2 800 °C respectively. Then, metal content, burning residue content of these purified carbon nanotubes were measured with ICP, EDS, and thermos-gravimetric analysis (TGA). And their resistivity were detected with a four-probe film resistance instrument. The micro structure and surface characteristics of these carbon nanotubes purified at different temperatures were characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR. The results show that the carbon nanotubes purified respectively at different high temperatures in Acheson furnace can be effectively reduced in metal content and burning residues, and these carbon nanotubes, as conductive agent can meet the requirements of power battery. Compared with the non-purified carbon nanotubes, the resistivity of carbon nanotubes purified at 3 000 °C decreases significantly and the crystallization degree of graphite increases, while the resistivity of carbon nanotubes purified at 2 800 °C increases slightly, the degree of graphite crystallization did not change much, and the quantity of their surface functional groups decreases. In this study, we investigate the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of PET separated from a densified postconsumer plastic mix, with the aim of recovering its monomer. This second raw material is made up of 90% polyolefin, while the remaining 10% is made up of PET, traces of metals, paper, and glass. After preliminary separation by density in water, two batch experiments were performed on the sunken fraction (composed mainly of PET) in a stainless steel autoclave at 345 °C for 30 and 20 min. Both trials resulted in similar yields of the three phases. In particular, the solid yield is around 76% by weight. After a purification step, this phase was analyzed by UV–Vis, 1H-NMR, and FTIR spectroscopy and resulted to be constituted by terephthalic acid (TPA), a product of considerable industrial interest. The study proved that the hydrothermal liquefaction process coupled with density separation in water is effective for obtaining TPA from a densified postconsumer plastic mix, which can be used for new PET synthesis. This paper examines key features of the preparation of high-purity Ga from electronic and electrical engineering industry waste. The decrease in the melting point of impurity-containing Ga is assessed thermodynamically in the ideal solution approximation. It is proposed that the purity of gallium in the final crystallization purification step can be monitored via precision measurement of the temperature of the melt with a pyrometer. Saponins extracted from Sapindus mukorossi are natural nonionic surfactants with various biological activities and strong surface activities, which can be widely used in biomedicine and the daily cleaning chemical industry. In this paper, Sapindus pericarp was used as the raw material for the extraction of saponins. Effects of major extraction variables, including solvents, extraction methods, material-to-liquid ratios, and extraction time were investigated. A yield of 30.48% and purity of 61.38% were obtained by using water extraction for 4 h with a material-to-liquid ratio of 1 : 6. Fermentation was used to purify the saponins, and a high sugar resistant yeast performed better with an optimal amount of 5%. The saponins concentration slightly decreased from 38.86 g L−1 to 37.72 g L−1 after fermentation, and the purity of the saponins increased to 78.97%. Structure and performance tests of homemade saponins were also carried out. The structure of Sapindus saponins was found to be similar to that of mukurozi-saponin using FTIR and HPLC, and the foam half-life of homemade saponins was 25.82% longer than that of unfermented saponins. On comparing four chemical surfactants, the foam half-life of saponins after fermentation was found to be much longer. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique based on crystallography is the main experimental method to analyze the three-dimensional structure of proteins. The production process of protein crystals on which the XRD technique relies has undergone multiple experimental steps, which requires a lot of manpower and material resources. In addition, studies have shown that not all proteins can form crystals under experimental conditions, and the success rate of the final crystallization of proteins is only <10%. Although some protein crystallization predictors have been developed, not many tools capable of predicting multi-stage protein crystallization propensity are available and the accuracy of these tools is not satisfactory. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning framework, named SADeepcry, for predicting protein crystallization propensity. The framework can be used to estimate the three steps (protein material production, purification and crystallization) in protein crystallization experiments and the success rate of the final protein crystallization. SADeepcry uses the optimized self-attention and auto-encoder modules to extract sequence, structure and physicochemical features from the proteins. Compared with other state-of-the-art protein crystallization propensity prediction models, SADeepcry can obtain more complex global spatial long-distance dependence of protein sequence information. Our computational results show that SADeepcry has increased Matthews correlation coefficient and area under the curve, by 100.3% and 13.4%, respectively, over the DCFCrystal method on the benchmark dataset. This paper describes a detailed study aimed at developing technological principles of the preparation of 99.99995%-pure Cd, Zn, and Te by crystallization purification methods. We have analyzed the thermophysical properties of Cd, Zn, Te, and structural materials of the equipment involved; substantiated the choice of graphite as a crucible material; and determined its engineering features. We have studied impurity distributions in Cd, Zn, and Te in crystallization processes and determined effective performance parameters of the materials refining process in horizontal directional solidification and zone melting steps. The exploitation efficiency of natural gas hydrate is highly affected by sand production. In this paper, hydrocyclone purification separator was designed. A combination of single factor with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to optimize the structure parameters. The performance of optimized hydrocyclone was also investigated. It shows that the sand separation efficiency increases from 90.4% to 98.7%, and the natural gas hydrate separation efficiency increases from 89.5% to 97.8%. Furthermore, the cut size of sand and natural gas hydrate are as low as 3 and 2 µm, respectively, and separation efficiency remains above 80% under inlet parameters. It can provide some reference for the design and manufacture of the in situ purification separator for gas hydrate mixture slurry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of heavy actinide targets, including 243Am, 240,242,244Pu, 245,248Cm, 249Bk, and 249Cf, irradiated by intense heavy ion beams of 48Ca has resulted in a significant expansion of the periodic table since 2000, including the discovery of five new heaviest elements and more than 50 new isotopes. These actinide materials can only be produced by intense neutron irradiation in very high flux reactors followed by chemical processing and purification in specialized hot cell facilities available in only a few locations worldwide. This paper reviews the reactor production of heavy actinides, the recovery and chemical separation of actinide materials, and the preparation of actinide targets for superheavy element experiments. The focus is on 248Cm, 249Bk, mixed 249−251Cf, and 254Es, including current availabilities and new production processes. The impacts of new facilities, including the Superheavy Element Factory at Dubna, accelerator and separator upgrades at RIKEN, and proposed upgrades to the High Flux Isotope Reactor at Oak Ridge are also described. Examples of recent superheavy element research are discussed as well as future opportunities for superheavy research using actinide targets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background This paper reports the preparation of a new family of spiked gold nanoparticles, spiked gold nanobipyramids (SNBPs). This protocol includes the process to synthesize gold nanobipyramids (NBPs) using combined seed-mediated and microwave-assisted method and procedure to form spikes on whole surface of gold nanobipyramid. We also evaluated the antibacterial activity against both methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) in various concentrations of SNBPs and NBPs by well diffusion assay, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) determination. The effect of SNBPs on exposed bacteria was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Results The UV-Vis of purified NBPs exhibited two absorption bands located at 550 nm and 849 nm with yield of bipyramidal particles more than 90%. The average size of NBPs was 76.33 ± 10.11 nm in length and 26.57 ± 2.25 nm in diameter, respectively, while SNBPs were prolongated in length and achieved 182.37 ± 21.74 nm with multibranches protruding whole surface areas. In antibacterial evaluations, SNBPs and NBPs showed antibacterial activity with MIC of 6.25 μl/ml and 12.5 μl/ml, respectively, for MSSA while 12.5 μl/ml and 25 μl/ml, respectively, for MRSA. Besides, MBC values of SNBPs and NBPs were found to be 12.5 μl/ml and 25 μl/ml, respectively, against MSSA while 25 μl/ml and 50 μl/ml, respectively, against MRSA. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy observation showed the mechanism that SNBPs damaged the outer membrane, released cytoplasm, and altered the normal morphology of MRSA and MSSA, leading to bacterial death. Conclusions This report suggests that these SNBPs are potential antibacterial agents that can be applied as antibacterial materials to inhibit the growth of human bacterial pathogen infections related to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
