Global warming induced by atmospheric CO2 has attracted increasing attention of researchers all over the world. Although space-based technology provides the ability to map atmospheric CO2 globally, the number of valid CO2 measurements is generally limited for certain instruments owing to the presence of clouds, which in turn constrain the studies of global CO2 sources and sinks. Thus, it is a potentially promising work to combine the currently available CO2 measurements. In this study, a strategy for fusing SCIAMACHY and GOSAT CO2 measurements is proposed by fully considering the CO2 global bias, averaging kernel, and spatiotemporal variations as well as the CO2 retrieval errors. Based on this method, a global CO2 map with certain UTC time can also be generated by employing the pattern of the CO2 daily cycle reflected by Carbon Tracker (CT) data. The results reveal that relative to GOSAT, the global spatial coverage of the combined CO2 map increased by 41.3% and 47.7% on a daily and monthly scale, respectively, and even higher when compared with that relative to SCIAMACHY. The findings in this paper prove the effectiveness of the combination method in supporting the generation of global full-coverage XCO2 maps with higher temporal and spatial sampling by jointly using these two space-based XCO2 datasets. The hydrology of scarce-data areas, such as the mountainous area of the Andes, is poorly known mainly owing to the lack of data. Global gridded climatological datasets (GGCDs) are becoming more precise and common, but the utility of these datasets and their applicability to complex hydrological systems are still not yet well determined. In this paper the reliability of a GGCD is evaluated as an alternative source to supply the lacking in situ observations, with the aim of studying the hydrology of a mountainous area in south-central Chile. The GGCDs are found to recover the climate variability in Andean areas, and partially recover the orographic effect caused by the mountains. A finding of practical relevance is that GGCDs could be considered as an adequate source for performing hydrological models and studies under high spatial variability and scarce-data environments such as the Andes. The North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) recently (re-)emerged in the literature as a key atmospheric mode in Northern Hemisphere climate variability, especially in the Pacific sector. Defined as a dipole of sea level pressure (SLP) between, roughly, Alaska and Hawaii, the NPO is connected with downstream weather conditions over North America, serves as the atmospheric forcing pattern of the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (NPGO), and is a potential mechanism linking extratropical atmospheric variability to El Niño events in the tropical Pacific. This paper explores further the forcing dynamics of the NPO and, in particular, that of its individual poles. Using observational data and experiments with a simple atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM), we illustrate that the southern pole of the NPO (i.e., the one near Hawaii) contains significant power at low frequencies (7-10 years), while the northern pole (i.e., the one near Alaska) has no dominant frequencies. When examining the low-frequency content of the NPO and its poles separately, we discover that low-frequency variations (periods >7 years) of the NPO (particularly its subtropical node) are intimately tied to variability in central equatorial Pacific sea surface temperatures (SSTs) associated with the El Niño-Modoki/Central Pacific Warming (CPW) phenomenon. This result suggests that fluctuations in subtropical North Pacific SLP are important to monitor for Pacific low-frequency climate change. Using the simple AGCM, we also illustrate that variability in central tropical Pacific SSTs drives a significant fraction of variability of the southern node of the NPO. Taken together, the results highlight important links between secondary modes (i.e., CPW-NPO-NPGO) in Pacific decadal variability, akin to already established relationships between the primary modes of Pacific climate variability (i.e., canonical El Niño, the Aleutian Low, and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation). Global warming has profound consequences for the climate of the American Southwest and its overallocated water supplies. This paper uses simulation modeling and the principles of decision making under uncertainty to translate climate information into tools for vulnerability assessment and urban climate adaptation. A dynamic simulation model, WaterSim, is used to explore future water-shortage conditions in Phoenix. Results indicate that policy action will be needed to attain water sustainability in 2030. even without reductions in river flows caused by climate change. Challenging but feasible changes in lifestyle and slower rates of population growth would allow the region to avoid shortage conditions and achieve groundwater sustainability under all but the most dire climate scenarios. Changes in lifestyle involve more native desert landscaping and fewer pools in addition to slower growth and higher urban densities. There is not a single most likely or optimal future for Phoenix. Meteorological and oceanographic data from ships of opportunity are the largest contributor to the world’s ocean surface database and thus are extensively used to estimate the change in climatic properties over the world’s oceans during the previous 150 years. The importance of these data for climate change studies underscores the need to fully understand the error associated with averages of these data. The sampling error problem is especially acute for ship data due to the fact that ships are moving platforms and, thus, report observations from constantly varying locations with time. This paper develops a theoretical framework for assessing the averaged sampling error associated with monthly, 1°×1° latitude-longitude box averaged ship data. It should be noted that the time-space distribution of ships within the averaging domain strongly affects the sampling error. This is shown in our derivation. The framework developed here can be used to improve upon existing methods for estimating the sampling error associated with three-dimensional box averages of meteorological and oceanographic data obtained from ship records. The framework is complimentary to existing methods of assessing biases and random error due to instrumentation, recording, etc. It is demonstrated mathematically that the uncertainty due to incomplete sampling is primarily a trade off between of the number of observations and their relative locations within the box as well as the inherent time-space correlation structure of the variable of interest. Abstract: Modern humans can be described as a colonizing species expanding its range from pole to pole in the course of the Holocene. The range shifts during the Late Pleniglacial in Europe form a case study in the limiting factors of early modern human colonizing behaviour. The paper provides an overview of the settlement history of Late Pleniglacial Europe (29–12.4ka BP). The patterns of presence and absence are described in terms of biogeographical processes of abandonment, stasis and expansion. These trajectories differ from region to region, probably in response to climatic change. I explore the relationship between climate change and settlement history by focusing on the role of herbivore diversity. Patterning in herbivore diversity in relation to plant abundance and quality is proposed as an important factor in determining long-term settlement patterns in Late Pleniglacial Europe. Abstract: The time span of the past 200ka has been marked by many large-scale global and regional climate changes, between warmer and cooler conditions. As is usually the case when studying the past, palaeoenvironmental data become scarcer with increasing age. Therefore, every detailed palaeoenvironmental record may be of special interest to Quaternary geologists in terms of palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, correlations and general stratigraphy of the Quaternary. In this paper we present a long palynological record of terrestrial flora and an ESR-dated marine record of global-scale climatic variation obtained from a loess–palaeosol sequence in the East European Plain and continental margin of Northern Eurasia for the time span starting from the penultimate glacial period correlating with Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6. These records show that in combination they have a potential of assigning warm/cold climate related deposits to the chronostratigraphically organised sequence of the late Pleistocene palaeoenvironmental events. Abstract  Previous assessments of the impacts of climate change on heat-related mortality use the “delta method” to create temperature projection time series that are applied to temperature–mortality models to estimate future mortality impacts. The delta method means that climate model bias in the modelled present does not influence the temperature projection time series and impacts. However, the delta method assumes that climate change will result only in a change in the mean temperature but there is evidence that there will also be changes in the variability of temperature with climate change. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of considering changes in temperature variability with climate change in impacts assessments of future heat-related mortality. We investigate future heat-related mortality impacts in six cities (Boston, Budapest, Dallas, Lisbon, London and Sydney) by applying temperature projections from the UK Meteorological Office HadCM3 climate model to the temperature–mortality models constructed and validated in Part 1. We investigate the impacts for four cases based on various combinations of mean and variability changes in temperature with climate change. The results demonstrate that higher mortality is attributed to increases in the mean and variability of temperature with climate change rather than with the change in mean temperature alone. This has implications for interpreting existing impacts estimates that have used the delta method. We present a novel method for the creation of temperature projection time series that includes changes in the mean and variability of temperature with climate change and is not influenced by climate model bias in the modelled present. The method should be useful for future impacts assessments. Few studies consider the implications that the limitations of the climate model may have on the heat-related mortality impacts. Here, we demonstrate the importance of considering this by conducting an evaluation of the daily and extreme temperatures from HadCM3, which demonstrates that the estimates of future heat-related mortality for Dallas and Lisbon may be overestimated due to positive climate model bias. Likewise, estimates for Boston and London may be underestimated due to negative climate model bias. Finally, we briefly consider uncertainties in the impacts associated with greenhouse gas emissions and acclimatisation. The uncertainties in the mortality impacts due to different emissions scenarios of greenhouse gases in the future varied considerably by location. Allowing for acclimatisation to an extra 2°C in mean temperatures reduced future heat-related mortality by approximately half that of no acclimatisation in each city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper questions the long-held paradigm of consumers'' rationality as well as its corresponding policy tool, the supply of information. Theoretical considerations as well as empirical evidence from a research on residential energy consumption in Belgium show that both environmental information – namely on climate change – and customised advice to save energy at home are neither just taken in as such by consumers nor translated into corresponding practices. In consumerist societies, practice compartmentalisation and moods are indeed normalised mechanisms for not adopting ‘green’ lifestyles that would threaten social normality as defined in valued networks. Significant changes in the climatic system have been observed, which may be attributed to human-enhanced greenhouse effect. Even stronger changes are projected for the future, impacting in an increasing way on human activity sectors. The present contribution, prepared in the framework of the MICE (Modelling the Impact of Climate Extremes) Project of the European Union, reviews how climate change may impact on winter tourism in the Alpine region, intense precipitation and flood potential in central Europe, forest damage in Scandinavia and beach holidays in the Mediterranean coast. Impacts are likely to be serious and largely adverse. Due to a lack of adequate information and lack of broadly accepted and reliable mathematical models describing the impact of changes in climate extremes on these activity sectors, it has been found useful to use expert judgement based impact assessment. Accordingly, regional mini-workshops were organized serving as platforms for communication between scientists and stakeholders, vehicles for dissemination of the state-of-the-art of the scientific understanding and for learning stakeholders’ view on extreme events, their impacts and the preparedness system. Stakeholders had the opportunity to react to the scientific results and to reflect on their perception of the likely impacts of projected changes in extremes on relevant activity sectors and the potential to adapt and avert adverse consequences. Winter can be a critical time on many rivers, during which ice conditions and a number of environmental factors can lead to rapidly developing and damaging flood events. Also, in northern Canada, rivers are important for both summer (ferry) and winter (ice bridge) transportation; however, during periods of variable ice conditions these transportation links are temporarily interrupted. As a result, northern communities can become isolated for periods of time. With climate warming becoming an increasing concern, it is important to know how elevated temperatures might affect river ice covers so that we can assess the implications for ice jam events, hydropower dam operation, and winter transportation. The Peace River in northern British Columbia and Alberta was used as a case study in this paper to assess the validity of a newly developed, public domain, thermo-hydraulic river ice model, River1D. The Canadian second-generation coupled global climate model (CGCM2) provided an offset for the historical air temperature input, and a future climate analogue for the mid-21st century ice regime was generated. The historical and future climate simulation results indicated significant potential reductions in the duration and extent of ice cover on the Peace River and a longer period over which the river will be impassible by ferry or ice bridge. Specifically, the number of days an ice bridge could be sustained at the Shaftesbury Ferry site was shown to decrease by 60% to 78%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
