Abstract The Eocene was an interval of climate evolution, when the extreme high temperatures of the earliest Cenozoic gave way to a global cooling trend. Fine-grained lacustrine sediments of Eocene age from northeastern China represent an excellent archive to study long-term environmental and climatic changes at high-resolution. The Huadian Basin is a Cenozoic, fault-bounded basin in Jilin Province, northeastern China. Though small in area, it contains numerous oil shale- and coal-bearing layers, which provide an abundant Middle to Late Eocene palynoflora. Eighty-five palynomorph genera and one hundred palynomorph species were identified in the Huadian Formation, allowing to distinguish 4 palynozones. The nearest living relatives of the recovered palynomorph taxa suggest the presence of subtropical evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved forests during deposition of the Huadian Formation. Using the coexistence approach (CA), we calculated seven paleoclimatic parameters, which indicate a subtropical warm and humid climate with a mean annual temperature above 13.6 °C and a mean annual precipitation of at least 887 mm. However, the climate became cooler and drier during the transition from the lower Oil Shale Member to the upper Carbonaceous Shale Member. Palaeoclimatic data from the various Middle and Late Eocene basins of northeastern China (i.e., the Huadian, Fushun, Yilan, Hunchun and Jishu basins) were compared with data from North American and European basins. Middle Eocene climate in the Northern Hemisphere was generally warm and humid, and the mean annual temperature and precipitation in northeastern China were similar to those in North America, though slightly lower than those of Europe. Similar trends in temperature and precipitation on different continents support the existence of a global Mid-Eocene cooling event. This paper is the first systematic study of Middle to Late Eocene seasonality in the Huadian Basin. Our results show an apparent differentiation in both temperature and precipitation between summer and winter, supporting the view that the East Asian Monsoon was established in northeastern China already during the Middle to Late Eocene. This Middle and Late Eocene monsoon was likely driven by the development of Pacific trade winds and an alternating, seasonal high- and low-pressure system over Siberia. The climatic changes observed in our dataset, especially the precipitation changes, appear to have played an important role in controlling oil shale formation in the Huadian Basin. A warmer and more humid climate, with abundant precipitation and high subsidence rates, formed a deeper Huadian depositional lake. High productivity and stable stratification provided the abundant organic matter and favorable preservation conditions necessary for oil shale accumulation. Pollen analysis is one of the best and possible approaches for the quantitative reconstruction of paleobotany and paleoclimate, and discrimination of human activities. In this paper, we reveal the characteristics of pollen assemblages in different agricultural units and their spatial distribution of major pollen taxa in the Anyang area where the human influences are serious, so as to get more information about climate change and human activities from pollen records. The pollen assemblages of total 122 surface soil samples from different agricultural units (farm lands, vegetable plots, wastelands, cape-lands, woodlands, etc.) indicate that herbaceous pollen dominates the pollen assemblages with an average of 73%, mainly from Poaceae, Artemisia, Chenopodiaceae and Cruciferae; arboreal pollen percentages reach 18%, mainly from Pinus and Ulmus; shrub pollen and fern spores have very low percentages. In general, pollen assemblages are consistent with vegetation composition, though some differences also exist in different agricultural units. In farmlands and vegetable lands, Poaceae pollen has the highest percentages (averaging 27%) compared to other agricultural units with dominant corn or wheat pollen, while in wastelands and woodlands, arboreal and Artemisia pollen percentages have higher values (averaging 20% and 19% respectively). Cruciferae has the highest pollen percentages (70%) in rape-lands. Both pollen assemblages and PCoA can generally identify the vegetable plots, farmlands, woodlands, wastelands, and rape-lands. Pinus and Artemisia pollens mainly appear in the western part of Anyang, which is consistent with the parent plants; Poaceae pollen mainly exist in the eastern part with more farmlands; Chenopodiaceae pollen mainly appear in the urban areas and near major roads where human influences are stronger, Cruciferae pollen can mainly be found in the urban area and in the northwest part of Anyang where more vegetables are planted. Abstract: A total of 237 surface soil pollen samples were collected from less disturbed zonal communities, and a new surface pollen data set has been established in northern China. Pollen-climate parameter transfer functions using weighted-averaging regression and calibration partial least squares (WA-PLS) model as a tool to reconstruct past climate changes from pollen data, were tested with this new surface pollen data set. The results of cross validation showed that the method worked very well with precipitation (R = 0.94, R2 jack = 0.89, RMSEPjack = 69 mm, the safe dynamic range of the reconstruction was 40 mm~800 mm) and worked well with temperature (Tann: R = 0.84, R2 jack = 0.71, RMSEPjack = 2.0°C, the safe dynamic range of the reconstruction was -4°C~13°C; MTwa: R = 0.79, R2 jack = 2.5°C, and the safe dynamic range of the reconstruction was 8°C~26°C), indicating that the surface pollen data set and WA-PLS reconstruction technique in this paper have strong potential for palaeoclimatic reconstruction. Abstract: This paper describes the palynological, sedimentological and geochemical results obtained from a 6 m core taken from Lake Dajiuhu in Shennongjia Mountains, central China, spanning the last 40,000 BP. The site is located in a subtropical area which is known for harboring many endemic species. The pollen record shows that past climate changes during the Glacial allowed the persistence of warm trees and even subtropical taxa. The percentages of arboreal pollen taxa vary from 40% before and during the last glacial period to ∼60% during the Holocene. The δ13C data indicate that the dominant vegetation was composed of C3 plants. However, despite the continuous presence of tree taxa around the site, the total organic carbon indicates that the biomass was very low during the glacial period (MIS 3 and 2), related to the dominance of conifers and evergreen tree taxa, which are very low biomass producers. The total organic carbon (TOC) started to increase steadily at the end of the last glacial period (end of MIS 2), which reflects the sharp increase in the amount of Sphagnum spores recorded at the end of MIS 2, marking the beginning of the peat bog formation and the increase of the in-situ biomass. The summergreen taxa, which increased during the Holocene, may have also contributed to the TOC increase. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: There is almost no detailed Holocene pollen data in Shandong Province. This paper reports a pollen record from a natural profile at Qingdao of Shandong Province, East China between 7250 and 3500 cal. BP, and provides new evidence for the collapse of Neolithic cultures around Central China in the middle Holocene. It reveals a subtropical deciduous and evergreen broad-leaved forest was well-developed during 7250–5900 cal. BP, representing the Holocene Maximum warm climate condition. During 5900–4550 cal. BP, pollen flora retained the main features of the former stage, but the contents for the major tree components in the flora decreased, implying an end of the Holocene Maximum warmth. From 4550 cal. BP to 3900 cal. BP, the percentage of AP (Arboreal Pollen) abruptly fell to the lowest value in the profile, inferring a distinct climate deterioration. During 3900–3500 cal. BP, a major recovery of AP is captured, indicating a possible climate change. The above mentioned climate changes are in good coherence with the local Neolithic Culture evolution. It is assumed that the cold climate during 4550–3900 cal. BP is possibly responsible for the collapse of the Longshan Culture in Shandong Province. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper, we report 3780-m-thick Neogene deposits accumulated in the Kuqa foreland basin of southern Tianshan range, providing great potential for studying both tectonics and paleoclimatic changes. Based on palynological evidence, we discuss the paleoenvironmental changes as well as the interplay between regional uplift and climatic change in the region studied. Our results indicate that the vegetation and climatic changes from 13.3 to 7Ma were response to global climatic changes. After 7Ma, the uplift of the southern Tianshan range partially affects vegetation and climatic changes. Both global cooling and the rainshadow effect of uplifted high mountains affect the enhanced arid climate initiated ca. 5.23Ma ago. Quaternary palynology in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) was initiated in the 1960s to meet the needs of economic development in western China. Pollen analysis was conducted for the first time on a 200-m long core of Quaternary lacustrine sediments taken from the main body of the TP in order to study pollen assemblages as well as vegetation and climate changes of glacial (cold)/interglacial (warm) periods. Pollen analysis of alpine snow and ice began at the first scientific expedition to the TP in the 1970s. After the 1980s, a series of international collaborative programs were carried out under Sino-French, Sino-German, Sino-Australian, and Sino-American cooperation, marking the integration of Chinese Quaternary palynology society with the international community. New methods for Quaternary palynology were gradually promoted and applied, changing the vegetational and climatic interpretation of Quaternary palynology from qualitative to quantitative. Since the 1990s, many palynologists have carried out extensive Quaternary palynological studies on fossil pollen sites of more than 60 lakes/sections and alpine glaciers in the TP to discuss the spatiotemporal vegetation changes and climatic and environmental evolution of the TP since the Pleistocene. Over the past half-century, Quaternary palynology in the TP has contributed to the establishment of the Chinese Quaternary pollen database and the study of vegetation and climate evolution since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in the TP. Currently available pollen records revealed the spatial and temporal distribution of vegetation in the TP since the LGM, exhibiting expansions and shrinkages of forest, meadow, grassland and desert in different periods such as the LGM, the last deglaciation, and Holocene optimum period. The paleomonsoon reflected by paleovegetation since the LGM has undergone the changes of weak-strengthening-strong-weakening but still active-shrinking, which is mainly affected by solar insolation. Much of our existing knowledge of Middle Jurassic paleoclimate is based on well-dated marine isotopic records that show fluctuations between warm (greenhouse effected) and cool climates. In contrast, much less is known from contemporaneous terrestrial deposits that are often difficult to correlate stratigraphically with marine successions, and are typically considered as showing regional rather than global signals. In this paper we show that the carbon-isotopic, petrological and floral record through 20 m thick coals in the Northern Qaidam Basin (NW, China) represents a relatively comprehensive northern hemisphere Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) record for terrestrial climatic change. δ13C coal values for 88 samples from the Yuqia area in Northern Qaidam Basin range from–25.3‰ to –22.5‰, indicating that C3 plants were the main coal-forming vegetation in the region during the Middle Jurassic. This isotopic variation follows fluctuations in the composition of ferns and gymnosperms, where higher ratios correspond to more negative δ13C values. The similar carbon isotope values of gymnosperms and coal from the Yuqia area indicate that the coal comprises a high proportion of organic material derived from gymnosperm taxa, which is consistent with the very high abundance of diterpenoids in coal and especially pimarane and abietane that are produced primarily by gymnosperms. Results from the coal matrix provide an opportunity to record paleoclimate changes, showing several striking and regular coal-forming cycles with distinct long- and short-term variations. Trends of δ13C coal values changes coupled with the evolution of coal-forming plants may record a gradual increase in paleo-CO 2 (p CO 2) concentration, water-table level changes and the decrease in abundance of Classopollis conifer pollen through Bajocian. This result is in accordance with the published marine carbonate records for this time, with correlation enabled through matching carbon isotope curves from the terrestrial succession at Yuqia and marine records. The similarity of the terrestrial and marine geochemical and floral record is an indication that the observed paleoclimate signal is a global phenomenon. The early Cenozoic was characterized by a very warm climate especially during the Early Eocene. To understand climatic changes in eastern Asia, we reconstructed the Early Eocene vegetation and climate based on palynological data of a borehole from Wutu coal mine, East China and evaluated the climatic differences between eastern Asia and Central Europe. The Wutu palynological assemblages indicated a warm temperate vegetation succession comprising mixed needle- and broad-leaved forests. Three periods of vegetation succession over time were recognized. The changes of palynomorph relative abundance indicated that period 1 was warm and humid, period 2 was relatively warmer and wetter, and period 3 was cooler and drier again. The climatic parameters estimated by the coexistence approach (CA) suggested that the Early Eocene climate in Wutu was warmer and wetter. Mean annual temperature (MAT) was approximately 16°C and mean annual precipitation (MAP) was 800–1400 mm. Comparison of the Early Eocene climatic parameters of Wutu with those of 39 other fossil floras of different age in East China, reveals that 1) the climate became gradually cooler during the last 65 million years, with MAT dropping by 9.3°C. This cooling trend coincided with the ocean temperature changes but with weaker amplitude; 2) the Early Eocene climate was cooler in East China than in Central Europe; 3) the cooling trend in East China (MAT dropped by 6.9°C) was gentler than in Central Europe (MAT dropped by 13°C) during the last 45 million years. Research on modern pollen assemblages of human-induced vegetation is conducive to extracting human impact information, and provides basis for determining human impact intensity. The use of 189 surface soil pollen samples from human-induced and natural vegetation shows that there were significant discrepancies of indicator pollen taxa and human impact intensity between different vegetation types in Northern China. The results demonstrate that forest and grassland pollen assemblages are dominated by natural vegetation pollen taxa, which show little effect from human impact. Farmlands are dominated by Cereal Poaceae pollen. Cultivation methods, climate conditions and human impact intensity are the main reasons that cause discrepancy in different regions. Uncultivated lands could be effectively distinguished based on common human-companion plant pollen types and certain amount of crop pollen, which display the first step of secondary succession from human-induced to natural vegetation. Indicator species analysis shows that Cereal Poaceae, Trilete spore, Humulus and Brassicaceae indicate farmlands; weeds Poaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Ranunculaceae and Selaginella sinensis indicate uncultivated lands; grasslands have the largest number of indicator pollen taxa, in which Convolvulaceae, Artemisia, Asteraceae, Liliaceae, Polygonaceae, and Nitraria pollen have the highest indicator values; in forests, Betula, Larix and Quercus have the highest indicator values with statistical significance. Meanwhile, Human Influence Index (HII) values can be used to differentiate human-induced and natural vegetation. The calibration model of pollen-HII based on the weighted averaging plus partial least squares (WA-PLS) method exhibits a good statistical performance (R2 = 0.69), and the HII values have the same trend of change with Cereal Poaceae percentage. Our results confirm that pollen from human-induced vegetation can provide reliable estimates of HII, which provides a good reference for restoring human impact intensity in fossil pollen assemblage. Using six long-term temperature proxy data series derived from different natural evidences, including pollens and lake-sediments, we reconstructed a temperature series with a 100-yr time resolution for the past 5000 yr in the Hetao region and its surrounding areas. The resulting series suggests that, on a millennial timescale, temperatures in the region were higher than the mean value of the whole series during the 5000∼2600 years before present (yr BP) period, and became relatively low comparing with the average temperature of the whole series after 2600 yr BP. Within these two periods, temperature fluctuations comprising numerous short, multi-centennial intervals also existed. A comparison between our reconstructed series and other series in China and across the Northern Hemisphere indicate that, on a longterm scale, cold-warm variations had been in phase across the whole hemisphere during the past 5000 years; on the century to multi-century scale, the beginning and the ending times varied from region to region, thus implying that climate changes did not occur simultaneously in different regions. A high-resolution pollen record of the past 13000 a from Huguangyan Maar Lake reveals the vegetation and environment changes in southern China during the Holocene. It shows that (i) pollen percentage of trees and shrubs reached 56% during the early Holocene (11600-7800 cal a BP), of which the pollen percentage of tropical trees reached a maximum at 9500-8000 cal a BP, reflecting a hot and wet environment; (ii) during the mid-Holocene (7800-4200 cal a BP), the pollen percentage of montane coniferous trees and herbs increased, while the percentage of tropical-subtropical trees decreased, indicating lower temperature and humidity; (iii) in the late Holocene spanning from 4200 to 350 cal a BP, the pollen percentage of herbs and montane conifer increased significantly, indicating a marked decrease of temperature and humidity. Our pollen data reveal that the time period 9500-8000 cal a BP in southern China represents a climatic optimum for the Holocene characterized by hot and wet conditions. This is consistent with the Holocene optimum found in lower latitude regions globally. We speculate that strong insolation might cause the northward migration of the ITCZ and subtropical summer monsoon front, which resulted in an early Holocene optimum in the Huguangyan area.
