Loop-mediated isothermal amplification or LAMP has been identified to be an efficient technology for point-of-care diagnostics. Paper-based LAMP technique has tremendous potential in replacing the existing tube-based technology as the manufacturing cost of a paper-based device is comparatively lower and easy-to-use. LAMP-based paper diagnostic device for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) detection is of extreme importance as it will help in early and rapid diagnosis of the affected patients. The fabrication of these devices requires assessment of design parameters on the extent of LAMP amplification reaction. Hence, CFD studies would be extremely beneficial from the design perspective. The current work presents an insight into the CFD simulations for LAMP amplification reaction on a porous paper membrane (nitrocellulose membrane). The convection-diffusion-reaction model is solved on a COMSOL Multiphysics 5.0 platform. Studies on effect of pore size, aspect ratio and initial DNA concentration on the extent of DNA amplification reaction have been carried out. The current paper-based technique is effective in detecting a minimum of 5 copies of DNA contrasting the previous semi-quantitative technique which demonstrated the detection of minimum 98 copies. Overall, the simulation results displayed almost 96% enhancement in the DNA amplification rate on paper membrane. We studied the influence of the operational variables (viz. ethylene-glycol concentrations of 50-70%, temperatures of 155-185 degrees C, times of 30-90 min and numbers of PFI beating revolutions of 500-1500) on pulp yield and various paper properties (breaking length, stretch, burst index, tear index and brightness) obtained in the ethylene-glycol pulping of vine shoots, cotton stalks, leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) and tagasaste (Chamaecytisus proliferus). The fuzzy neural network models used reproduced the experimental results with errors less than 15% and smaller than those provided by second-order polynomial models in all cases. An ethylene-glycol concentration of 65% at 180 degrees C for 75 min and 1500 PFI beating revolutions were found to provide substantial savings in energy, chemicals and facility investments as a result of operating under milder conditions than the strongest ones studied in this work. Tagasaste was found to be the most suitable raw material among those tested as it provided the paper sheets with the highest breaking length (4644 m), stretch (2.87%), burst index (2.46 kN/g), tear index (0.33 m Nm(2)/g) and brightness (40.92%); its pulp yield was also high (62.88%), which reflects efficient use of this raw material.

A field measurement and computer modeling effort was made to assess the dilution field of pulped waste materials discharged into the wake of a US Navy frigate. Pulped paper and fluorescein dye were discharged from the frigate's pulper at known rates. The subsequent particle and dye concentration field was then measured throughout the wake by a following vessel using multiple independent measures. Minimum dilution of the pulped paper reached 3.2 x 10(5) within 1900 m behind the frigate, or about 8 min after discharge. Independent measures typically agreed within 25% of one another and within 20% of model predictions. Minimum dilution of dye reached 2.3 x 10(5) at a down-wake distance of approximately 3500 m, or roughly 15 min. Comparison to model measurements were again within 20%. The field test was not only successful at characterizing wake dilution under one set of at-sea conditions, but was successful at validating the computer model used for assessing a wide range of ships and conditions.

We consider the constitutive law of paper and its relation to a spatially inhomogeneous, random paper structure, the so-called formation. Under biaxial tensile loading, paper may be taken as an elastic-plastic hardening material, modelled here by a hyperbolic tangent law. The fact that paper is a quasi-two-dimensional solid offers a chance to inspect its formation via a basis-weight distribution (mass per unit area), and then carry out cross-correlations of two planar fields: the formation versus the strain (or stress) field resulting from a fine-mesh finite-element simulation of a sheet of paper subjected to a specified in-plane loading. The simulation requires an assumption of constitutive coefficients as a function of formation, and the higher the resultant cross-correlation, the better the assumed constitutive law. With this methodology we conclude that the higher the basis-weight, the higher the local stiffness and strength of the paper (on millimetre scales) in two very different cases: a Crayola sketch-paper and a paperboard. We next set up a Boolean model of paper formation, where each grain plays the role of a floc of cellulose fibres. First, we employ a computational-mechanics fibre-network model to demonstrate the effects of formation on non-uniform strain fields in the elastic regime. Moving on to the inelastic regime, we treat flocs as continuum ellipses, and, employing the resulting relation between formation and constitutive coefficients, we study scale-dependent homogenization of paper and establish that the representative volume element in the sense of Hill (1963 J. Mech. Phys. Solids 11, 357-372) is approximately reached on scales about 10 times larger than the floc size.

Abstract A number of problems associated with dimensional stability of paper products have to do with hygroexpansion in response to changes in humidity or moisture content. The main underlying mechanism of hygroexpansion in paper is the effect of the change of fiber cross-sections transferred through fiber bonds. In fact, the transverse expansion of fibers can be an order of magnitude greater than the longitudinal expansion. Addressing such problems using modeling on the microscale is associated with large computational costs since both the bonds and the fibers need to be resolved. We present a method for modeling the hygro or thermal expansion of interconnected fiber networks modeled with beam elements and connected through beam-to-beam contact. Being a line structure, beams can only support pointwise contact, which poses a challenge for modeling the force transfer induced by the deformation of the cross-sections at the contact point. The idea of implementing the stress transfer is to use a concurrent multiscale approach in which the bond level is resolved in detail using the configuration of the fibers and the computed strains are passed over to the beam elements. We verify and prove the applicability of this approach by comparing it with continuum models. We demonstrate the advantage of using this approach in terms of its tremendous saving in time. The use of beam models for modeling the hygro- or thermal expansion of fiber networks enables considering relevant sizes in the problems involving dimensional stability, in particular those associated with embedded inhomogeneities. We will show the applicability of the model by providing insights into published experimental observations on the hygroexpansion properties of paper products. Finally, we will demonstrate that the use of a 2D model to simulate the inter-fiber bonds in a network, not only leads to underestimation of out-of-plane deformations, but also to overestimation of the contribution of the transverse deformation of fibers to the in-plane dimensional change of the network. In museums, libraries and archives, some of the paper relics, upon ageing, are very brittle and even cannot be handled without destroying the material. This is because of the depolymerization of cellulose and, consequently, the loss of mechanical strength. To prolong the life expectancy of paper relics, the poly(methyl methacrylate- co-butyl acrylate- co-styrene) (MMA-BA-ST) was used to strengthen the fragile paper fibers in this work. The relation between the mass concentration of MMA-BA-ST emulsion and the specific properties of papers (e.g., folding endurance, tensile strength, tearing strength, whiteness and glossiness) and the ageing resistance were investigated. In addition, the effect of MMA-BA-ST on different types of paper was also studied. Furthermore, the reinforcing mechanism of MMA-BA-ST on paper was also investigated by dissipative particle dynamics simulations. This paper approaches the problem of testimony from a new direction. Rather than focusing on the epistemic grounds for testimony, it considers the problem from the perspective of an individual who must choose whom to trust from a population of many would-be testifiers. A computer simulation is presented which illustrates that in many plausible situations, those who trust without attempting to judge the reliability of testifiers outperform those who attempt to seek out the more reliable members of the community. We present a technique for simulating plastic deformation in sheets of thin materials, such as crumpled paper, dented metal, and wrinkled cloth. Our simulation uses a framework of adaptive mesh refinement to dynamically align mesh edges with folds and creases. This framework allows efficient modeling of sharp features and avoids bend locking that would be otherwise caused by stiff in-plane behavior. By using an explicit plastic embedding space we prevent remeshing from causing shape diffusion. We include several examples demonstrating that the resulting method realistically simulates the behavior of thin sheets as they fold and crumple. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Folding a sheet of paper along a curve can lead to structures seen in decorative art and utilitarian packing boxes. Here we present a theory for the simplest such structure: an annular circular strip that is folded along a central circular curve to form a three-dimensional buckled structure driven by geometrical frustration. We quantify this shape in terms of the radius of the circle, the dihedral angle of the fold, and the mechanical properties of the sheet of paper and the fold itself. When the sheet is isometrically deformed everywhere except along the fold itself, stiff folds result in creases with constant curvature and oscillatory torsion. However, relatively softer folds inherit the broken symmetry of the buckled shape with oscillatory curvature and torsion. Our asymptotic analysis of the isometrically deformed state is corroborated by numerical simulations that allow us to generalize our analysis to study structures with multiple curved creases. The work is built on a previous research by Wiryana and Berg, in which wicking into four wet-formed paper stripes, consisting of cellulose fibers and four different percentages of the powdered carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) superabsorbent, was studied experimentally. Because of the swelling of cellulose fibers and CMC powder on contact with water, the wicking was accompanied by a swelling of the matrix. A finite element/control volume (FE/CV)-based computer program is used for the first time to model the wicking in such swelling porous medium. The simulation used a novel form of continuity equation, which included the effects of liquid absorption and matrix swelling, in conjunction with the Darcy's law to model the single-phase flow behind a clearly defined liquid-front. A new method of estimating the time-varying permeability of the paper, based on the absorbed liquid-mass vs. time plots, is also proposed. Later, this time-dependent permeability is used in the numerical simulation to change the permeability in elements behind the moving liquid-front as a function of the time that the element has been wetted by the liquid, since the passage of the liquid-front. Abstract: In this paper, the prospect of integrating a combined paper&pulp mill with fuel production via biomass gasification was investigated. In the study, three different types of gasifiers (circulating fluidised bed, entrained flow and indirect gasification) and three fuel processes (dimethyl ether, methanol and Fischer-Tropsch wax synthesis) were investigated using computer simulations. The paper reports differences from the stand-alone cases and the integrated cases, using the electricity equivalence efficiency as a measure. Only 6 out of the 18 integrated cases studied displayed a positive result from integration and no obvious fuel selection that stand out as the most beneficial one, however the synthesis of dimethyl ether is, in combination with all gasifiers assessed a rather good choice, with an change in efficiency from integration ranging from −1% to 4%. Dimethyl ether is not the best choice if the electrical equivalence is to be maximised however. In this case the combination of circulating fluidised bed gasification and methanol synthesis should be pursued. The production of Fischer-Tropsch wax should according to the chosen measure not be produced; however there is an added value in the production of a non-oxygenated fuel which has not been taken into account in this particular study. All cases leads to a reduction of 0.4–0.9 kg CO2 per kg of dry biomass used in the process for fuel synthesis and the possibility to export bark is a more significant factor in this respect than which type of fuel is synthesised. The article presents a conceptual framework using simulation to predict effluent biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) characteristics as a function of improved wastewater treatment. These simulations use equations that describe BOD kinetics. They also able to reproduce trends in f-ratio observed at various pulp and paper facilities and predict BOD reactivity as a function of treatment.

The article focuses on the prediction of the tensile breaking strength, the most commonly used physical property for paper characterization. It develops a novel three-dimensional computational simulator of paper structure to better understand the influence of fiber morphology on paper properties. It also discusses the development of the tensile strength model.

This paper proposes a new method to improve re performance of intra-field interpolation which is the mos~ important element of deinterlacing method. Traditional edge- based methods were poor at determining accurate edge iirection which decides interpolation performance. The 7roposed method decides the direction and slope of edge based on locally adaptive-thresholded binary image to mprove efficiency and accuracy, and it also increased the ~orizontal size of search window to 15 for better direction ietermination at gentle slope. Compared to traditional edge- based methods, interpolation based on binary image, which is ,`enerated using the proposed method, leads to great erformance improvement. This paper presents an implementation of an ~daptive beamformer in a hands-free unit. The proposec~ ~daptive beamformer suppresses stationary noise an~ nterference sound. The adaptive beamformer and acoustic `cho canceller were implemented in a compact hands-free mit with a low-cost DSP. The article reports on the technique that was developed to produce three-dimensional computer models of forming fabrics. The technique consists of machining cross-sections of a fabric, imaging the cross-sections, and then reconstructing the fabric structure using computer-aided design (CAD). A demonstration of the application of this technique is presented which shows the existence of critical distances between filaments. An insight into the drainage flow through a fabric, which has an effect on the microstructure of paper produced on it is provided by this imaging technique.
