While gamified technology integration in vocabulary instruction within a flipped classroom has yielded beneficial teaching outcomes, specific studies have raised concerns about potential adverse effects linked to this approach. As a result, conducting a comparative analysis between gamified technology and conventional paper-based methods within the flipped classroom framework has become essential. This analysis aims to foster the development of a targeted teaching approach that adeptly addresses the unique needs of students. This study employed a sequential explanatory research design to examine the effectiveness of flipped classroom with gamified technology and paper-based method in teaching vocabulary to students with different proficiency levels. Quantitative data was gathered from a pretest and a posttest, whilst qualitative data was collected through teachers' guided reflection. Using Academic Word List (300 target words), control groups employed a paper-based, while experimental groups applied gamified technology ("Quizlet," "Kahoot!," "Quizizz," "Socrative," and "Google Form"), which lasted 10 weeks. The participants were 144 non-English major students who took a general English course in the 2nd semester of 2023. Quantitative data analysis ran in SPSS 25 using "Paired Sample t-Test" and "One-way ANOVA." The qualitative data were analyzed using thematic progression. The results showed that gamified technology did not affect students' learning outcomes, while the paper-based method resulted conversely. It revealed that the paper-based method is more effective than gamified technology for students in general, with low proficiency and high-proficiency level. Further, teachers' beliefs admitted distinctive issues that gamified technology was more effective for high-proficiency learners, whereas paper-based was more effective for low-proficiency learners. The difference analysis of quantitative and qualitative data sheds light on discussing threats while implementing gamified technology and possible solutions.

This article focuses on the possible relationship between predictions, developed during the resolution of geometrical tasks within a Paper-and-Pencil Environment (PPE), and subsequent explorations within a Dynamic Geometry Environment (DGE). Building on Fischbein's Theory of Figural Concepts, and to gain insight into the transition of predictions from the PPE to the DGE, I introduce an analytical scheme that includes the identification of the solvers' figural concepts in focus and geometric predictions; dragging modalities that solvers make use of in the DGE; reactive and proactive dimensions of the interaction with dynamic objects in the DGE. I present a fine-grained qualitative analysis of data collected during task-based interviews as high school students reason about a geometrical task--first on paper-and-pencil and then in a DGE. The analyses of three representative examples show that the interaction with DGE objects can lead students to rethink the geometrical configuration and renegotiate predictions, depending on the circumstances that offer the opportunities to experiment with continuities or discontinuities during the transition of prediction from one to the other environment.

Faculty in the information systems (IS) and information technology (IT) fields are faced with the challenge to keep their curriculum relevant and current. What was taught two years ago will often be outdated and faculty must constantly update their curriculum on which courses should be taught as well as what should be taught within a particular course. This research continues a fifteen-year effort to help understand employer needs in terms of the skills they desire new hires to possess upon employment. This is the sixth version of this employer survey. The survey continues to report the responses of over 500 IS/IT professionals and was expanded to ask additional questions related to salary information. In addition, based on feedback from open-ended questions in a prior survey, new categories were added to the survey. Several key results and changes from prior surveys include that VR/AR (virtual reality/augmented reality) platforms showed the highest anticipated growth rate for all operating platforms in the next two years, analytics tools such as Apache Spark showed high growth rate, and JavaScript maintained the first position for programming languages.

Throughout this study technology and especially mobile phones was utilized in EFL classrooms in order to see whether it can influence the process of vocabulary formative assessment and consequently improve vocabulary learning of Iranian pre-intermediate EFL learners or not. Two groups of pre-intermediate EFL learners participated in this study. Regarding the first group (FMA) the vocabulary learning of learners was assessed formatively during ten sessions using Socrative mobile application. The vocabulary learning of the second group (FPA) was also assessed formatively but paper and pen were the instruments used by instructor and students to take the tests. After applying quasi-experimental research design including pretest, treatment and posttest and after running independent sample t tests to posttest scores, the results showed that those pre-intermediate EFL learners attending in the group where vocabulary gain was assessed formatively using mobile application named Socrative performed significantly better in posttest than group assessed formatively based on paper and pen (Sig=0.03<0.05). The analysis of attitude questionnaire distributed among participants of the group assessed formatively using mobile phone exhibited that they possessed a positive attitude towards mobile based testing.

The aim of this research is to advance in the teaching-learning process of representing quadratic functions, both with pencil and paper and with a technological tool. For this purpose, a didactic experience is presented. Firstly, it is explained in the traditional way how to graph a quadratic function; secondly, students are introduced to the GeoGebra software. It provides a categorization of the different errors and difficulties of the students, the comparison between a graphic representation with paper and pencil and a representation with GeoGebra, and the improvement with the technological tool.

Graphing is an important practice for scientists and in K-16 science curricula. Graphs can be constructed using an array of software packages as well as by hand, with pen-and-paper. However, we have an incomplete understanding of how students' graphing practice vary by graphing environment; differences could affect how best to teach and assess graphing. Here we explore the role of two graphing environments in students' graphing practice. We studied 43 undergraduate biology students' graphing practice using either pen-and-paper (PP) (n = 21 students) or a digital graphing tool GraphSmarts (GS) (n = 22 students). Participants' graphs and verbal justifications were analyzed to identify features such as the variables plotted, number of graphs created, raw data versus summarized data plotted, and graph types (e.g., scatter plot, line graph, or bar graph) as well as participants' reasoning for their graphing choices. Several aspects of participant graphs were similar regardless of graphing environment, including plotting raw vs. summarized data, graph type, and overall graph quality, while GS participants were more likely to plot the most relevant variables. In GS, participants could easily make more graphs than in PP and this may have helped some participants show latent features of their graphing practice. Those students using PP tended to focus more on ease of constructing the graph than GS. This study illuminates how the different characteristics of the graphing environment have implications for instruction and interpretation of assessments of student graphing practices.

Artificial intelligence tools have presented many challenges and opportunities to transform teaching and learning on college campuses. These changes are significant enough to require colleges to take action to create a framework by which faculty and students can navigate the proper usage of these tools. Rather than working to create entirely new policies strictly for addressing these new technologies, they should instead edit their existing academic integrity and intellectual property statements to incorporate explicit mentions of artificial intelligence.

Cheating behaviour in exams in the form of plagiarism occurs in school and college education. Academic fraud is common at the higher education level at the undergraduate, master's level, and even at the doctoral level. Academic fraud is getting out of control and is difficult to eradicate on examinations carried out online without strict supervision. The purpose of this research was to reveal the level of academic cheating in the form of plagiarism and its correlation with the results of the mid and final test of the Doctoral program, which was conducted in the form of an on-line take-home examination. This research use a correlation analysis technique with a simple regression test. The sample was determined by purposive sampling technique, amounting to 101 students of 2018, 2019, and 2020 classes who took the 2nd-semester learning technical analysis and development courses. The plagiarism level of the mid and final-semester results was tested using Turnitin. This research found that the level of plagiarism in the form of an average similarity index in the mid-semester are at the intermediate level; medium level internet resources; publication at a low level; and middle-level student papers. Meanwhile, at the end of the semester, it is known that the similarity index is at the intermediate level; medium level internet resources; low level publications, and student papers at the intermediate level. Furthermore, the results of this study also reveal that there is a positive and significant correlation between index, internet source, and student papers with the results of mid-semester exams, except for the source of publication plagiarism. Meanwhile, there is only a positive and significant correlation between the source of student paper plagiarism and the examination of the results for the final semester exams. In contrast, the similarity index, internet sources, and publication did not find a significant relationship.

The purpose of this article is to describe a couple of challenging mathematical problems that involve paper folding. These problem solving tasks can be used to foster geometric and algebraic thinking among students. The context of paper folding makes some of the abstract mathematical ideas involved relatively concrete. When implemented appropriately these activities have the potential to address many of the mathematical proficiencies, as delineated by Australian Curriculum and Assessment Reporting Authority (ACARA, 2014). Drawing-to-learn is a specific learning/reading strategy studied across many domains. In response to gaps in our knowledge about drawing-to-learn, we conducted a systematic meta-analysis of the literature published since the influential 2005 Van Meter and Garner literature review. We analyzed the benefits of directed learner-generated visual representations such as sketching, drawing, or computer-assisted creation of a full or partial static image. Forty-one peer-reviewed articles were screened in, together with 9 dissertations and 2 other documents; published from 2005 to 2018, these included 53 studies and 166 effects based on 8111 participants. The overall effect of drawing-to-learn across all dependent variable types (factual, inferential, and transfer) and both types of effects--comparing different types of drawing and comparing drawing to non-drawing conditions--was a significant g = 0.69. The overall effect was significant but differed across outcomes (g = 0.85 for factual, g = 0.44 for inferential, and g = 0.22 for transfer). Analyses across 6 moderators are presented. Not only does the literature continue to show that drawing-to-learn is better than the status quo, but directed drawing improves factual as well as inferential and transfer learning. Finally, researchers have found ways to improve drawing-to-learn instruction so that it can be even more effective than the simple directive to make a drawing.

Vocabulary acquisition is one of the largest and most important tasks in language classes. New technologies, such as computers, have helped a lot in this way. The importance of the issue led the researchers to do the present study which concerns the comparison of contextualized vocabulary learning on paper and through Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). To this end, 52 Pre-university EFL learners were randomly assigned in two groups: a paper-based group (PB ) and a computer-based (CB) group each with 26 learners. The PB group received PB contextualization of vocabulary items, while the CB group received CB contextualization of the vocabulary items thorough PowerPoint (PP) software. One pretest, posttest, along with an immediate and a delayed posttest were given to the learners. Paired samples t-test of pretest and posttest and independent samples t-test of the delayed and immediate posttest were executed by SPSS software. The results revealed that computer-based contextualization had more effects on vocabulary learning of Iranian EFL learners than paper-based contextualization of the words.

Current academic and industry discussions regarding systems development project approaches increasingly focus on agile development and/or DevOps, as these approaches are seen as more modern, streamlined, flexible, and, therefore, effective as compared to traditional plan-driven approaches. This extends to the current pedagogy for teaching systems analysis and design (SA&D). However, overemphasizing agile and DevOps neglects broader dimensions that are essential for planning and executing enterprise-level systems projects. Thus, a dilemma may arise: do we teach agile and DevOps techniques that may be inadequate for enterprise-level projects or do we teach the wider range of plan-driven skills and techniques that may conflict with the tenets and benefits of agile and DevOps? In this paper, we advocate for resolving this dilemma by adopting a generalized process framework that both fully supports enterprise-level projects but can also be selectively scaled back toward increased agility for smaller, less complex projects. In its full realization, this framework combines extensive project planning and up-front requirements with iterative delivery -- an increasingly popular approach today for enterprise projects. In scaling back toward agile, the framework carefully accounts for system, environment, and team characteristics. Further, the model emphasizes issues frequently underemphasized by agile approaches, including the use of external software such as commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS), Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), and open source products and components; the need for business-oriented project planning and justification; and support for change management to ensure successful system adoption. The framework thereby flexibly accommodates the full range of activities that software projects must support to be successful.

The purpose of the study was to explore how technological advances incorporated into the Philology Studies curriculum could impact the students' research skills and the quality of their research projects and what students' and teachers' impressions of the reshaped research component of the curriculum were. The study used qualitative and quantitative methods with the dominance of qualitative methods. It employed the baseline study, checklist to assess students' research papers, assessment criteria, and the Triangular Assessment Method to assess the students' papers. The consensus meeting was held to allow the experts to express their reasoning for the scores. The semi-structured interview was administered to the students' and teachers' to identify their impressions of the reshaped research component of the curriculum of philology. The technological advances incorporated into Philology Studies curriculum improve the students' research skills and the quality of their research projects. Both students and teachers appreciated the reshaped research component of the curriculum. The analytical software can be successfully incorporated in the corpus analysis-purpose student research. The students found the intervention a challenging experience that 'pumped up' their intellectual, research, and technical skills. They reported improvement in interpreting corpus using correlations, frequencies, distributions, and collecting information using software to organise it in a professional way. The lecturers agreed that the technology-based instructional model incorporated into Philology Studies curriculum improved both students' research skills and the quality of their research projects.

This article contrasts the normal method for drawing Lewis structures with a two-step systematic approach. The latter approach uses a known molecular connectivity and a knowledge of the number of valence electrons that each atom possesses to visualize bonds that are formed by pairing electrons, one from each atom. This process is repeated until at least one of the non-hydrogen atoms in each bond has an octet. Donor bonds are added when atoms with six and eight electrons are adjacent. In forming donor bonds charges are added to the atoms involved to maintain electron accounting and there is no need to use a formula to calculate formal charges. The general importance of adhering to the octet rule for p-block compounds is stressed and the difference between covalent and donor bonds and the use of the recent IUPAC definition of oxidation state which is based on Lewis structures is included in the discussion. When students are able to draw Lewis structures they can be given access to PC software, available on an academic free basis, which will draw rotatable Lewis structures in 3D for p-block compounds. The software allows the user to move electron pairs in a bow and arrow fashion within the structures and atoms are highlighted when the octet is exceeded.

Knowledge representation of scientific paper data is a problem to be solved,and how to learn the representation of paper nodes in scientific paper heterogeneous network is the core to solve this problem.This paper proposes an unsupervised cluster-level scientific paper heterogeneous graph node representation learning method(UCHL),aiming at obtaining the representation of nodes (authors,institutions,papers,etc.) in the heterogeneous graph of scientific papers.Based on the heterogeneous graph representation,this paper performs link prediction on the entire heterogeneous graph and obtains the relationship between the edges of the nodes,that is,the relationship between paper and paper.Experiments results show that the proposed method achieves excellent performance on multiple evaluation metrics on real scientific paper datasets.

With the rapidly increasing entrance examinations for the School of Continuing education of CUGB, there is an urgent need of the examination papers that have the parallel testing ability for the same academic program. Based on the analysis of parallel factors and the comparison of the manual generated mode and the computer generated mode, the most time-consuming and experience-consuming steps are found. By providing supports to those steps automatically, a semi-auto computer generated testing paper system was designed and developed for reducing the workload of the experienced faculties to generate testing papers. The papers were generated based on a gradually constructed item-bank. The system offered multiple templates of the testing paper structure plan for assisting semi-auto paper generated procedure and guaranteeing the parallel of the generated papers. In order to construct an item-bank in a short time, an easy-to-use authoring tool with powerful functions was designed and developed. The system supported the spring entrance examination of SCECUGB in 2010 successfully. Faculties gave positive feedback toward the system. (Contains 8 figures and 4 tables.)

Fragmented connectivity in South Africa is the dominant barrier for digitising initiatives. New insights surfaced when a university-based nursing programme introduced tablets within a supportive network learning environment. A qualitative, explorative design investigated adult nurses' experiences of the realities when moving from paper-based learning towards using tablets within a blended learning environment. Purposive sampling was applied. 45 (N) participants were included, each receiving a preloaded tablet (15 running on iOS, 15 on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and 15 on Windows® 8 operating systems), being WiFi-dependent, integrated into a supportive learning network. Participants completed eleven compulsory Internet-based activities. Three reflective focus groups with 18 (n) participants concluded the project. Through self-empowerment and supportive environment, students adopted seamlessly, overcame network and resource-related challenges. Valuable lessons were learned within the digital divide, integrate tablets into distance learning from a resilient and pragmatic approach.

Many teachers report using behavioral management charts in their classrooms as a means of managing student behaviors, but little is known about exactly what behaviors teachers are charting, or specifically how. Misunderstanding over how real-world teachers maintain behavioral charts may cause miscommunication between the teacher and the school psychologist. This study sought to determine how teachers collect and track behavioral data. Researchers examined behavioral charts used by teachers in a Title I elementary school that reported using Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports (PBIS). Researchers evaluated charts for ten classrooms (~150 students) and compared the type of data collected by each teacher for each child. Findings indicated that teachers either used no system, their own systems, or a computer-based system (Class Dojo) for charting behavior. An analysis of each of these systems found that Class Dojo provided significantly more data (positive and negative notations) in general, as well as more reliable data than any other system reviewed. Discussions of these findings within a PBIS framework, as well as general concerns about the computer-based system, are provided.

The deep penetration and global impact of mobile devices has led the scientific community to undertake a thorough analysis of the implications of this phenomenon. Researchers need to determine their true real effect and how they can best be used to manage information and build knowledge. This study has examined recent investigations on the subject of mobile learning and carried out a descriptive analysis of a sample of registers indexed on the Web of Science research platform in 2015-16. An exhaustive content analysis has revealed new areas where M-Learning is being implemented, especially in the teaching of foreign languages, the emergence of social interaction methodologies in Secondary Education, evolving forms of collaborative relationships, work with clearly defined student profiles and the use of virtual immersive and innovative spaces in Higher Education. This paper also emphasizes the presence of previously unknown, transcendent problems associated with M-learning, such as the collateral addiction effect, and its interference in the classroom. Finally, our study suggests that teachers could embrace these technological proposals and include them in their strategies. Indeed, it might be necessary to flip the process, so this research could be the start of the generation and design of innovative guidelines to manage these forms and content.

With the development of science and technology,people need to access a large number of scientific and technological information quickly,and scientific paper is one of the main ways to carry scientific and technological information.As an important part of scientific paper,abstract is an effective tool for readers to retrieve literature.Therefore,the quality of abstract affects the retrieval rate of paper directly.However,due to the lack of writing experience,the quality of abstracts written by many authors is not high.Automatic generation of summary for scientific paper can help the author grasp the important content of paper more effectively,so as to write high-quality abstract.At the same time,the automatically generated abstract can also control the number of words in the abstract,which can bring more content to readers and help them understand the paper better.Generating automa-tic summarization for scientific paper can help author write abstract faster,which is one of the research contents in automatic summarization.Compared with common news document,scientific paper has the characteristics of strong structure and clear logical relationship.As far as the mainstream abstractive summarization such as encoder-decoder model is concerned,it mainly consi-ders the serialized information in the document,and rarely explores the text structure information in the document.For this reason,according to the characteristics in scientific papers,this paper proposes an automatic summarization model based on the hie-rarchical structure of "word-section-document",which uses the association between word and section to enhance the level of text structure and the interaction between levels,so as to screen out the key information in scientific paper.In addition,a context gate unit is extended to update the optimized context vector,thus capturing context information more comprehensively.The experimental results show that the proposed model can effectively improve the performance of the generated summarization in the ROUGE evaluation method.

There is a dearth of research comparing the effects of iPad technology and paper-and-pencil-delivered interventions on student mathematics outcomes. Nine studies have compared intervention modalities such as computer-mediated instruction and teacher-mediated instruction to examine differences in student performance, but only two of these have used iPad technology to do so and neither examined student fact fluency as the outcome. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an iPad-based versus a paper-and-pencil-based flashcard intervention on the basic fact fluency of four second-grade boys within a Midwestern US charter school. Using an adapted alternating treatments design, three conditions were compared: iPad-delivered flashcards, paper-and-pencil-based flashcards, and a control condition. The results suggest that for three of four students, there was no difference in gains between treatment conditions, and both were more successful than the no-treatment control. Descriptive data on the acceptability and number of opportunities to respond between intervention modalities are described.

Developing higher-order critical thinking skills as one of the central objectives of education has been recently facilitated via software packages. Whereas one such technology as computer-aided argument mapping is reported to enhance levels of critical thinking (van Gelder 2001), its application as a pedagogical tool in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings has been rarely explored. In addition, the literature fails to acknowledge whether having the basic skill of representing an argument diagrammatically even with paper and pencil can lead to similar results. That being the case, this study was conducted with the aim of comparing the impact of teaching argument mapping via "Rationale"™ software versus "paper and pencil" on Iranian EFL majors' critical thinking skills development. To this end, 180 EFL participants were screened into low and high levels of reading proficiency based on their scores on a sample reading proficiency test. Next, they were randomly assigned to two experimental and one comparison groups. During 12 sessions, the experimental groups were provided with argument mapping instructions while the comparison group received a conventional reading instruction. All participants were pre- and post-tested with the California critical thinking skills test (CCTST). Results suggested that students in the software group significantly outperformed those in the paper and pencil group on overall CCTST and the sub-skills of inference and inductive reasoning. They also scored significantly higher on all tests compared to the comparison group. However, participants' level of proficiency as well as sex did not show any significant effect on their performance on overall CCTST and its sub-skills.

We utilized cross tabulation statistics, word frequency counts, and content analysis of research output to conduct a bibliometric study, and used CiteSpace software to depict a knowledge map for research on entrepreneurship education in China from 2004 to 2013. The study shows that, in this duration, the study of Chinese entrepreneurship education experienced a progression through three stages, an "exploratory stage of learning from foreign models," a "developmental stage geared toward employment problems," and a "transformative stage promoting cultivation of student abilities," and featured three primary characteristics, "multidisciplinary fusion," "imbalanced regional distribution," and "policy orientation." In the future, popular fields in the study of entrepreneurship education are to be concentrated in the three areas, namely "entrepreneurship education and talent cultivation," "entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial environments," and "entrepreneurship education and innovation education."

This study aims to investigate plane geometry problem-solving strategies of prospective mathematics teachers using dynamic geometry software (DGS) and paper-and-pencil (PPB) environments after receiving an instruction with GeoGebra (GGB). Four plane geometry problems were used in a multiple case study design to understand the solution strategies developed by 2 prospective teachers. The results revealed that although the participants mostly used algebraic solutions in the PPB environment, they preferred geometric solutions in the GGB environment even though algebraic solutions were still possible (the software did not preclude them). Furthermore, different proofing strategies were developed in each environment. This suggests that changing the environment may prompt students to seek for additional solutions, which, in turn, results in a deeper understanding of the problem. As such, using both environments simultaneously in solving the same problems appears to bring about important benefits.

This paper presents an analysis of papers delivered at the ICALT 2004 conference, in order to understand the current research issues relating to Learning Objects (LOs). The major research results are summarized, and the papers are classified according to the definition of LO used and the approach taken (technical, pragmatic or pedagogic). The technologies employed, and the features present in the papers, are analyzed. (Contains 1 table and 5 figures.)

An objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) has been recognised as a reliable but workload-intensive assessment method across health sciences studies. Though a variety of digital marking tools have been employed to improve marking and feedback provision for OSCEs, many of these require specialist software or maintenance. This pilot study examines the development and trialling of Microsoft Forms as a marking and feedback instrument for an OSCE within a Sport and Exercise Therapy module. This study aims to assess whether the use of a non-specialist digital tool, such as Microsoft Forms, might be able overcome limitations in current assessment procedures and ultimately provide a more effective method for marking and feedback provision for an OSCE. Results from OSCE examiners (N = 8) and students (N = 30) who participated in the pilot indicate that Microsoft Forms does have the potential to provide a more effective experience for examiners and ultimately improve upon feedback provision for students when compared with a paper-based marking tool. However, concerns around the form's ease-of-use may ultimately influence its adoption as a marking instrument above current paper-based methods.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related technologies have a long history of being used in education for motivating learners and enhancing learning. However, there have also been critiques for a too uncritical and naïve implementation of AI in education (AIED) and the potential misuse of the technology. With the release of the virtual assistant ChatGPT from OpenAI, many educators and stakeholders were both amazed and horrified by the potential consequences for education. One field with a potential high impact of ChatGPT is programming education in Computer Science (CS), where creating assessments has long been a challenging task due to the vast amount of programming solutions and support on the Internet. This now appears to have been made even more challenging with ChatGPT's ability to produce both complex and seemingly novel solutions to programming questions. With the support of data collected from interactions with ChatGPT during the spring semester of 2023, this position paper investigates the potential opportunities and threats of ChatGPT for programming education, guided by the question: What could the potential consequences of ChatGPT be for programming education? This paper applies a methodological approach inspired by analytic autoethnography to investigate, experiment, and understand a novel technology through personal experiences. Through this approach, the authors have documented their interactions with ChatGPT in field diaries during the spring semester of 2023. Topics for the questions have related to content and assessment in higher education programming courses. A total of 6 field diaries, with 82 interactions (1 interaction = 1 question + 1 answer) and additional reflection notes, have been collected and analysed with thematic analysis. The study finds that there are several opportunities and threats of ChatGPT for programming education. Some are to be expected, such as that the quality of the question and the details provided highly impact the quality of the answer. However, other findings were unexpected, such as that ChatGPT appears to be "lying" in some answers and to an extent passes the Turing test, although the intelligence of ChatGPT should be questioned. The conclusion of the study is that ChatGPT have potential for a significant impact on higher education programming courses, and probably on education in general. The technology seems to facilitate both cheating and enhanced learning. What will it be? Cheating or AI-enhanced learning? This paper reflects on the process of designing and implementing an update to the "Introduction to Information Technology" course at Bentley University, a business university in New England. Driven by a university-wide curriculum reform initiative and following best practices from digital literacy frameworks and IS model curricula, the new CS 100 course, entitled "Solving Business Problems with Information Technology," shifted emphasis from a personal computing context to exploring small business applications of technology. Students networked with university alumni at "Topics in Tech" presentations, where they learned about career options as information technology professionals. The authors describe the pilot courses that led to proposing a new CS 100 course and reflect its challenges and successes. Challenges included meeting the university's goal of transfer friendliness, scaling from a few pilots to multiple sections, consistency of course delivery, and evaluating assessment. Successes include placing course topics in a business context, introducing current technologies, and providing opportunities for students to learn about career opportunities and experiences from university alumni. The paper also describes how CS 100 aligns with the university's student learning goals for the new curriculum. These include developing future-focused skills, encouraging curiosity and critical analysis, communicating and collaborating in different settings, and demonstrating understanding of issues related to ethical use of technology.

Using R to conduct univariate meta-analyses is becoming common for publication. However, R can also conduct multivariate meta-analysis (MMA). However, newcomers to both R and MMA may find using R to conduct MMA daunting. Given that, R may not be easy for those unfamiliar with coding. Likewise, MMA is a topic of advanced statistics. Thus, it may be very challenging for most newcomers to conduct MMA using R. If this holds, this can be viewed as a practice gap. In other words, the practice gap is that researchers are not capable of using R to conduct MMA in practice. This is problematic. This paper alleviates this practice gap by illustrating how to use R (the metaSEM package) to conduct MMA on educational psychology data. Here, the metaSEM package is used to obtain the required MMA text outputs. However, the metaSEM package is not capable of producing the other required graphical outputs. As a result, the metafor package is also used as a complimentary to generate the required graphical outputs. Ultimately, we hope that our audience will be able to apply what they learn from this method paper to conduct MMA using R in their teaching, research, and publication.

The paper has three major objectives. The first objective of the paper is to synthesize and define common categories of meta-analysis. The second objective is to propose a way to comprehend these common categories of meta-analysis through learning from their respective generic conceptual frameworks. The third objective is to point out which R packages to use to conduct a meta-analysis for each category presented in this paper. In practice, research novices may not know where to begin to learn a topic of meta-analysis for their research. Furthermore, they may not know how the topic of meta-analysis progresses from basics to advanced. This makes it almost next to impossible to use meta-analysis in their research. Certainly, this is problematic. Thus, this paper intends to help research novices overcome this problem. To achieve this, the three objectives mentioned at the beginning were implemented. To propose a synthesis of common categories of meta-analysis along with their respective definitions, a literature review was used as a method to synthesize and define the common categories of meta-analysis presented in this paper. Here, synthesizing meta-analysis categories in one figure would make it much easier for research novices to see the breadth of the subject in question. To propose an easy way to understand the concepts of meta-analysis through learning from their respective generic conceptual frameworks, personal experience was used as a method to make that offering. Here, it is encouraged that research novices should go beyond the definitions of categories of meta-analysis. They can try to frame their research by using example conceptual frameworks presented in the paper as a starting point. To point out which R packages to use with what categories of meta-analysis, a literature review was used as a method to identify those appropriate R packages available. Here, it would be useful for research novices to know which R packages they may need for their meta-analysis research. In summary, the contributions of the paper here would make research novices see and understand the common categories of meta-analysis from the bottom to the top of the pyramid, also offers an easy way to understand the common categories of meta-analysis by illustrating how to develop conceptual frameworks for the common categories of meta-analysis, and finally recommending the R packages to be used with the categories of meta-analysis. Ultimately, we hope that research novices will be able to use meta-analysis successfully in their research.

Abstract We present a mixed reality-based assistive system for shading paper sketches. Given a paper sketch made by an artist, our interface helps inexperienced users to shade it appropriately. Initially, using a simple Delaunay-triangulation based inflation algorithm, an approximate depth map is computed. The system then highlights areas (to assist shading) based on a rendering of the 2.5-dimensional inflated model of the input contour. With the help of a mixed reality system, we project the highlighted areas back to aid users. The hints given by the system are used for shading and are smudged appropriately to apply an artistic shading to the sketch. The user is given flexibility at various levels to simulate conditions such as height and light position. Experiments show that the proposed system aids novice users in creating sketches with impressive shading.

The purpose of this article is to describe a couple of challenging mathematical problems that involve paper folding. These problem-solving tasks can be used to foster geometric and algebraic thinking among students. The context of paper folding makes some of the abstract mathematical ideas involved relatively concrete. When implemented appropriately these activities have the potential to address many of the mathematical proficiencies, as delineated by Australian Curriculum and Assessment Reporting Authority (ACARA 2014).

T. B. Ward (1994) investigated creativity by asking participants to draw alien creatures that they imagined to be from a planet very different from Earth. He found that participant drawings reliably contained features typical of common Earth animals. As a consequence, Ward concluded that creativity is structured. The present investigation predicts that this limitation on creativity is not restricted to drawings: the use of different technology will not change creative output. To investigate this question, participants performed Ward's task twice: once using pencil and paper and once using software made to design creatures (the Spore Creature Creator). Only minor significant differences were found. This preliminarily suggests that changing tools does not affect the overall rigidity of the creative process. This lends further support to Ward's thesis on the structural rigidity of creativity. We conclude by suggesting an elaboration to Ward's thesis that will be explored in future work. We suggest that aesthetics might be one of the factors that contribute to creative constraint, in that creatures that are too unusual would be less interesting.

This paper presents results from a comparative analysis of two sections of Introduction to International Politics, one of which used a traditional research paper as a supplemental assignment and one that used the Statecraft online simulation. Both sections were taught during the same semester and used common lecture notes, PowerPoint slides, exam reviews, and exams. The only difference was the nature of the supplemental assignment. The paper finds that the best predictor of student performance on exams is a student's GPA prior to taking the class. At the same time, the evidence suggests that time dedicated to the online simulation in class may have led to worse performance on at least one exam. Finally, the paper finds that students did enjoy the Statecraft simulation and generally believed that it was preferable to a traditional research paper in spite of its representing additional work relative to the more traditional research paper.

This research investigated an up-draft gasification system of paper waste sludge (PWS) to generate syngas. Lower heating value (LHV) and cold gas efficiency (CGE) are influenced by PWS moisture content and equivalence ratio (ER). Supply air for gasification by increasing ER reduced LHV due to increased inert gas (N2) content. PWS moisture provides steam for the water-gas shift reaction that increases LHV and CGE. But the moisture of the PWS higher than 15 % significantly reduced the gasification temperature (less than 800 °C), causing the overall gasification efficiency to decrease. According to the response surface methodology (RSM) using Design Expert software, the optimum conditions were predicted that PWS moisture of 11.09 %, ER of 0.104, syngas produced with an LHV of 10.48 MJ/kg, and a CGE of 67.55 %. Experimenting with a real model has similar results with small differences compared to the RSM model in the same conditions. Syngas from the real model has an LHV of 10.22 ± 0.24 MJ/kg and a CGE of 65.68 ± 1.02 %. PWS gasification under optimal conditions is an effective PWS treatment method that not only solves PWS but can also generate energy in the form of syngas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is an increasing sensitivity to the challenges posed by the language of examination papers and of instruction in scientific subjects, especially for non-native speakers of English. It has been observed that in addition to technical subject-specific vocabulary, non-technical words such as instructional verbs have been sources of difficulty, and there are indications that other "ordinary" English words cause problems. For many years the aerospace industry has striven to make its manuals understandable and unambiguous to non-native speakers, a goal shared by writers of examination papers. To achieve this, the industry uses Simplified English, a controlled language with limited vocabulary and restricted grammatical rules. While recognising the limitations of this approach, the authors considered that by testing examination papers against the rules of Simplified English, it might be possible to identify areas of potential difficulty for non-native speakers. This paper describes the results of a study which tests past examination questions using software based on AECMA Simplified English, the controlled language in established use in the British aerospace industry. The results identified many lexical items which were not in the original list of "Approved words". Some of these were technical words and others were non-technical terms which are in common use in an engineering context. However, some were potential problem sources, including implicit instructions and vague or ambiguous words. Software alerts that related to sentence structure, in particular those related to sentence complexity, indicated that some sentences had additional problems. (Contains 1 note.)

A simple wind speed measurement device, a paper anemometer, is fabricated based on the theory of standing waves. In providing the working profile of the paper anemometer, an experimental device is established, which consists of an anemometer sensor, a sound sensor, a microphone, paper strips, a paper cup, and sonic acquisition software. It shows that the sound wave detected in the paper cup has a larger amplitude and the noise is depressed, though the frequency of the sound is twice that detected directly from the strip. From the experiments, we find that the frequency of the sonic wave does not change with wind speed; however, its amplitude increases with wind speed. To predict the wind speed, a correlation is established from the sound wave amplitude. (Contains 8 figures and 1 table.)
