Lobsters and crayfish in Australasia can develop a condition known as Tail Fan Necrosis (TFN syndrome). Many attempts have been made to find a primary pathogen or link the syndrome to commercial activities, but a solution remains elusive. TFN syndrome is a 'wicked problem', a problem difficult or impossible to solve because of incomplete and contradictory information forming a matrix of potential outcomes with no simple solution. Reviewing the literature shows TFN syndrome is sometimes reported to develop in association with sterile blisters on the telson and uropods which may rupture permitting invasion by environmental fungal and/or bacterial flora. Whether blisters form prior to, or because of, infection is unknown. TFN syndrome sometimes develops in captivity, sometimes requires a previous insult to the telson and uropods, and prevalence is patchy in the wild. The literature shows the cause of blisters associated with TFN syndrome remains an enigma, for which we suggest several possible initiating factors. We strongly urge that researchers not 'jump to conclusions' as to the aetiology of TFN syndrome. Understanding the ecological role of species with overlapping distributions is central to inform ecosystem management. Here we describe the diet, trophic level and habitat use of three sympatric stingrays, Hypanus guttatus, H. marianae and H. berthalutzae, through combined stomach content and stable isotope (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) analyses. Our integrated approach revealed that H. guttatus is a mesopredator that feeds on a diverse diet of benthic and epibenthic marine and estuarine organisms, principally bivalve molluscs, Alpheus shrimp and teleost fishes. Isotopic data supported movement of this species between marine and estuarine environments. H. berthalutzae is also a marine generalist feeder, but feeds primarily on teleost fishes and cephalopods, and consequently occupies a higher trophic level. In contrast, H. marianae is a mesopredator specialized on shrimps and polychaetas occurring only in the marine environment and occupying a low niche breadth. While niche overlap occurred, the three stingrays utilized the same prey resources at different rates and occupied distinct trophic niches, potentially limiting competition for resources and promoting coexistence. Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are 'extreme' environments harboring diverse animal communities, powered by chemosynthesis. Though vent-endemic macrofauna have been a center of interest since their discovery in 1977, macroparasites have received little attention. Here, we report a bopyrid epicaridean isopod infesting the symbiotic munidopsid squat lobster Shinkaia crosnieri Baba and Williams, 1998 from three vent fields of Okinawa Trough, and describe it as Pleurocryptella shinkai sp. nov. Although morphologically close to the congeners Pleurocryptella formosa Bonnier, 1900, Pleurocryptella wolffi Bourdon, 1972, and Pleurocryptella altalis Williams, Boyko, and Marin, 2020, both females (via body proportion and characters of barbula, antennae, pleopods, and pleomeres) and males (via features of the head, pleomeres, and uropods) of the new species exhibit distinctive characters. Phylogenetic reconstruction based on the 18S rRNA gene (850 bp) was insufficiently resolved to clarify the relationship of different epicaridean lineages or the exact position of P. shinkai sp. nov., but it recovered P. shinkai sp. nov. in a distant position from the type genus of Pseudioninae, indicating non-monophyly of this subfamily. Crustaceans are successful in vents but this is only the second vent epicaridean reported, after Thermaloniscus cotylophorus Bourdon, 1983 from the East Pacific Rise described from a single cryptoniscus larva. As such, this is the first report of a vent bopyrid isopod and the first vent epicaridean with a known host. Some epicaridean lineages have adapted to tolerating the conditions of hydrothermal vents, and future research will likely uncover more epicarideans and other interesting parasites from these extreme habitats.

The Irish Sea is an important area for Norway Lobster Nephrops norvegicus fisheries, which are the most valuable fishing resource in the UK. Norway lobster are known to ingest microplastic pollution present in the sediment and have displayed reduced body mass when exposed to microplastic pollution. Here, we identified microplastic pollution in the Irish Sea fishing grounds through analysis of 24 sediment samples from four sites of differing proximity to the Western Irish Sea Gyre in both 2016 and 2019. We used µFTIR spectroscopy to identify seven polymer types, and a total of 77 microplastics consisting of fibres and fragments. The mean microplastics per gram of sediment ranged from 0.13 to 0.49 and 0 to 1.17 MP/g in 2016 and 2019, respectively. There were no differences in the microplastic counts across years, and there was no correlation of microplastic counts with proximity to the Western Irish Sea Gyre. Considering the consistently high microplastic abundance found in the Irish Sea, and the propensity of N. norvegicus to ingest and be negatively impacted by them, we suggest microplastic pollution levels in the Irish Sea may have adverse impacts on N. norvegicus and negative implications for fishery sustainability in the future., (© 2022. Two new bopyrids, Bopyrinina articulata n. sp. and Bopyrinella asymmetrica n. sp. are described from French Polynesia, the Red Sea, and the Philippines. Bopyrinina articulata n.sp. infests Salmoneus cf. gracilipes Miya, and is distinguishable from other species of this genus by the structure of the maxilliped, pleopods and oostegite 1. Bopyrinella asymmetrica n. sp. is most similar to Bopyrinella albida Shiino, 1958, but females differ from that species because all pereomeres on the short side have round dorsolateral bosses and its pleotelson is greatly distorted. Bopyrina ocellata (Czerniavsky, 1868) is newly recorded from the Western Atlantic, from Florida, USA. Review of the species of Bopyrina revealed that B. choprai Nierstrasz & Brender à Brandis, 1929 and B. sewelli Chopra, 1930 are intermediate in morphology between Bopyrina and Schizobopyrina, the taxonomic assignment of these two species needs further evaluation. Keys to Bopyrinella Nierstrasz & Brender à Brandis, 1925 and Bopyrina Kossmann, 1881 are presented. Hosts and distributions of the seven species of Bopyrinella are summarized.

Hydrothermal vents are unique deep-sea environments exhibiting extreme temperature gradients and toxic concentrations of H 2 S that limit the growth of biological communities. Notably, some decapod crustaceans are the dominant organisms inhabiting these environments, and share similar phenotypic and physiological traits, such as white body coloration and chemosynthetic capacity. However, a lack of genomic information has precluded an understanding of these convergent phenotypes. Here, comparative transcriptomic analyses were performed in 14 decapod species, including four deep-sea hydrothermal vent species and 10 shallow-water relatives. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that the four deep-sea species stemmed from different ancestors despite being geographically close, and therefore their similar traits were probably the product of convergent evolution rather than lineal inheritance. A total of 391 positively selected genes, 109 parallel substituted genes and 33 significantly expanded gene families were identified in the deep-sea decapods. Among these, only the SNARE interactions in vesicular transport pathway was significantly enriched, with both positively selected genes and parallel substituted genes, suggesting that specific macromolecule transport might be a strong convergent evolution trait in deep-sea decapods. Furthermore, many genes involved in protein synthesis, processing and energy metabolism were detected under convergent evolution, suggesting a role for adaptive evolution in association with a specific metabolic pathway in response to chemosynthetic nutrition patterns. Moreover, our study suggests that convergently evolved white body colour might have resulted from the contraction of the crustacyanin gene family and the low content of astaxanthin in the body of deep-sea decapods. An aquaponic system is considered to be a sustainable food production solution that follows circular economy principles and the biomimetic natural system to reduce input and waste. It is the combination of two mainly productive systems, a recirculating aquaculture system consists of fish and crustaceans farmed in a tank and hydroponic cultivation consists of vegetable cultured in medium other than soil. Both these systems are well-known around the globe by their performance of production, quality, and verified food safety. An aquaponic system is an industrious mechanism which incorporates impeccably with sustainable growth of intensive agriculture. The existing literature regarding the aquaponic production covers different species of vegetables and fish, a variety of layouts of system, and climate conditions. However, there is a lack of knowledge that can systematically present the existing state-of-the-artwork in a systematic manner. So to overcome this limitation, the proposed research presents a systematic literature review in the field of urban aquaponics. Diel vertical migration (DVM) of marine animals represents one of the largest migrations on our planet. Migrating fauna are subjected to a variety of light fields and environmental conditions that can have notable impacts on sensory mechanisms, including an organism's visual capabilities. Among deep-sea migrators are oplophorid shrimp that vertically migrate hundreds of metres to feed in shallow waters at night. These species also have bioluminescent light organs that emit light during migrations to aid in camouflage. The organs have recently been shown to contain visual proteins (opsins) and genes that infer light sensitivity. Knowledge regarding the impacts of vertical migratory behaviour, and fluctuating environmental conditions, on sensory system evolution is unknown. In this study, the oplophorid Systellaspis debilis was either collected during the day from deep waters or at night from relatively shallow waters to ensure sampling across the vertical distributional range. De novo transcriptomes of light-sensitive tissues (eyes/photophores) from the day/night specimens were sequenced and analysed to characterize opsin diversity and visual/light interaction genes. Gene expression analyses were also conducted to quantify expression differences associated with DVM. Our results revealed an expanded opsin repertoire among the shrimp and differential opsin expression that may be linked to spectral tuning during the migratory process. This study sheds light on the sensory systems of a bioluminescent invertebrate and provides additional evidence for extraocular light sensitivity. The present paper is a taxonomic correction to the following three recent papers published by our research group: Figueroa-Muñoz & De los Ríos-Escalante (2017), De los Ríos et al. (2018), and Figueroa & De los Ríos (2018). Originally, Figueroa & De los Ríos-Escalante (2017) described the studied species as I Pachygrapsus marmoratus i (Fabricius, 1787), whereas in the two following papers the species studied was assigned to I Cyrtograpsus angulatus i Dana, 1851 (cf. The specimens collected included in the previous studies (Figueroa-Muñoz & De los Ríos-Escalante, 2017; De los Ríos et al., 2018; Figueroa & De los Ríos, 2018), were re-examined and identified anew. We inventoried all nine species of the 'Acanthephyra purpurea' complex, one of the most abundant and cosmopolitan group of mesopelagic shrimps. We used 119 specimens at hand and genetic data for 124 specimens from GenBank and BOLD. Phylogenetic analysis of four genes (COI, 16S, NaK, and enolase) showed that the 'Acanthephyra purpurea' complex is polyphyletic and encompasses two species groups, 'A. purpurea' (mostly Atlantic) and 'A. smithi' (Indo-West Pacific). The 'A. purpurea' species group consists of two major molecular clades A. pelagica and A. kingsleyi - A. purpurea - A. quadrispinosa. Molecular data suggest that hitherto accepted species A. acanthitelsonis, A. pelagica, and A. sica should be considered as synonyms. The Atlantic is inhabited by at least two cryptic genetic lineages of A. pelagica and A. quadrispinosa. Morphological analyses of qualitative and quantitative (900 measurements) characters resulted in a tabular key to species and in a finding of four evolutionary traits. Atlantic species showed various scenarios of diversification visible on mitochondrial gene level, nuclear gene level, and morphological level. This study employs a comprehensive approach combining metagenomic analysis and bacterial isolation to elucidate the microbial composition, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and virulence factors (VFGs) present in shrimps from market and supermarket. Metagenomic analysis of shrimps revealed a dominance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes with Firmicutes notably enriched in some samples. On the other hand, the dominant bacteria isolated included Citrobacter portucalensis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Vibrio species and Klebsiella pneumonaie. Metagenomic analysis unveiled a diverse spectrum of 23 main types and 380 subtypes of ARGs in shrimp samples including many clinical significant ARGs such as bla KPC , bla NDM , mcr, tet(X4) etc. Genomic analysis of isolated bacterial strains identified 14 ARG types with 109 subtype genes, which complemented the metagenomic data. Genomic analysis also allowed us to identify a rich amount of MDR plasmids, which provided further insights into the dissemination of resistance genes in different species of bacteria in the same samples. Examination of VFGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in both metagenomic and bacterial genomes revealed a complex landscape of factors contributing to bacterial virulence and genetic mobility. Potential co-occurrence patterns of ARGs and VFGs within human pathogenic bacteria underlined the intricate interplay between antibiotic resistance and virulence. In conclusion, this integrated analysis for the first time provides a comprehensive view and sheds new light on the potential hazards associated with shrimp products in the markets. Seagrass meadows are biodiversity hotspots for invertebrate species including decapods. Understanding the drivers of species abundance, richness and diversity of decapod assemblages is crucial for the conservation of such hotspots, but how drivers act across multiple spatial scales remains unexplored. Here we describe the decapod assemblages of Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows and assess the influence of attributes from three increasing spatial scales (habitat, landscape, and geographical levels) on the assemblages' structure and composition, as well as the variability partitioning among each one of these levels. Overall, geographical level attributes (i.e., inlet aperture, confinement) affected the most the decapod assemblages, while we only found a modest contribution from habitat (e.g., detritus biomass, sediment organic matter) and landscape attributes (e.g., fragmentation). We employed a meta-analysis to determine if the presumed resilience of decapods to ocean acidification extends to all biological aspects, environments, and life stages. Most response categories appeared unaffected by acidification. However, certain fitness-related traits (growth, survival, and, to some extent, calcification) were impacted. Acid-base balance and stress response scaled positively with reductions in pH, which maintains homeostasis, possibly at the cost of other processes. Juveniles were the only stage impacted by acidification, which is believed to reduce recruitment. We observed few differences in responses to acidification among decapods inhabiting contrasting environments. Our meta-analysis shows decapods as a group slightly to moderately sensitive to low pH, with impacts on some biological aspects rather than on all specific life stages or habitats. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) are a suite of harmful chemicals (hereafter collectively referred to as 'dioxins'), and their emission into aquatic habitats leads to persistent contamination of sediments, aquatic food-webs, and seafoods. Quantifying contaminant levels in seafood species is important for the ongoing management of exposure risk by fishers, particularly after any remediation actions. We present dioxin concentrations in four seafood species (Yellowfin Bream Acanthopagrus australis, Sea Mullet Mugil cephalus, Eastern School Prawn Metapenaeus macleayi, and Eastern King Prawn Penaeus plebejus) in a recreationally fished estuary, in relation to a contaminated site that has undergone a remediation process, partially removing contaminated sediments (Homebush Bay, Port Jackson, New South Wales, Australia). Dioxin concentrations in these species were measured before (2005/6) and after (2015/16) remediation at a range of locations in and around the remediated site. Dioxin concentrations and congener profiles differed substantially among taxa, and concentrations were frequently higher than Australian screening criteria. The two prawn species showed evidence of a decline in dioxin concentrations after remediation, but the fish species only showed a declining dioxin concentration with distance from the contaminated site (not between periods). There were some minor changes in the congener profile for some species following remediation. While there was evidence for greatly reduced dioxin concentrations in prawn species following remediation, the complex patterns for fish were likely affected by environmental changes, species-specific and temporal changes in lipid content, and animal movement patterns. Here, we used distribution models to predict the size of the environmentally suitable area for shrimps of fishing interest that were impacted by the tailing plume from the collapse of the Fundão Dam, one of the largest ecological disasters ever to occur in Brazil. Species distribution models (SDMs) were generated for nine species of penaeid shrimp that occurred in the impacted region. Average temperature showed the highest percentage of contribution for SDMs. The environmental suitability of penaeids varied significantly in relation to the distance to the coast and mouth river. The area of environmental suitability of shrimps impacted by tailings plumes ranged from 27 to 47 %. Notably, three protected areas displayed suitable conditions, before the disaster, for until eight species. Background: The processing of the three major crustaceans (shrimp, lobster, and crab) is associated with inevitable by-products, high waste disposal costs, environmental and human health issues, loss of multiple biomaterials (chitin, protein hydrolysates, lipids, astaxanthin and minerals). Nowadays, these bioresources are underutilized owing to the lack of effective and standardized technologies to convert these materials into valued industrial forms., Aim of Review: This review aims to provide a holistic overview of the various bioactive ingredients and applications within major crustaceans by-products. This review aims to compare various extraction methods in crustaceans by-products, which will aid identify a more workable platform to minimize waste disposal and maximize its value for best valorization practices., Key Scientific Concepts of Review: The fully integrated applications (agriculture, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, paper industries, etc.) of multiple biomaterials from crustaceans by-products are presented. The pros and cons of the various extraction methods, including chemical (acid and alkali), bioprocesses (enzymatic or fermentation), physical (microwave, ultrasound, hot water and carbonic acid process), solvent (ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents, EDTA) and electrochemistry are detailed. The rapid development of corresponding biotechnological attempts present a simple, fast, effective, clean, and controllable bioprocess for the comprehensive utilization of crustacean waste that has yet to be applied at an industrial level. A comprehensive molecular analysis of the deep-sea blind lobsters of the family Polychelidae, often referred to as "living fossils", is conducted based on all six modern genera and 27 of the 38 extant species. Using six genetic markers from both mitochondrial and nuclear genomes, the molecular phylogenetic results differ considerably from previous morphological analyses and reveal the genera Polycheles and Pentacheles to be para- or polyphyletic. As the splitting of Polycheles has strong support from both molecular and morphological data, two new genera, Dianecheles and Neopolycheles, are erected for those species excluded from the clade containing the type species of Polycheles. The pattern of polyphyly of Pentacheles, however, is not robustly resolved, so it is retained as a single genus. Fossil evidence suggests that fossil polychelids inhabited deep-sea environments as early as the Early to Middle Jurassic, demonstrating the enduring adaptation of extant polychelid species to the deep-sea. Time-calibrated phylogeny suggested that modern polychelids probably had an Atlantic origin during the Jurassic period. Since their emergence, this ancient lobster group has continued to diversify, particularly in the West Pacific, and has colonized the abyssal zone, with the deepest genus, Willemoesia, representing the more 'derived' members among extant polychelids. The aim of the present study was to determine the levels of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the tail muscle tissue of wild populations of Nephrops norvegicus from the Northern Adriatic, and correlate it to body size, seasons, sex and the content of mercury, arsenic, cadmium, lead and copper. The animals of both sexes were collected in spring and autumn from two relatively distant fishing grounds. A marked variability of muscle AChE activity was found (0.49 to 11.22 nmol/min/mg prot.), displaying the opposite seasonal trend between two sampling sites. Small, but significant negative correlation has been found between AChE activity and carapace length (r s  = - 0.35, p < 0.05). Data reported here provide an essential baseline for future studies of neurotoxicity in crustaceans. This study used inductively coupled plasma and mass spectrometry, followed by microwave digestion, to assess the concentration of six trace metals (Cr, Ni, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb) in three canned products (tuna in oil [TIO], sardine in oil [SIO], and mackerel in oil [MIO]), two pickled products (prawn pickle [PP] and fish pickle [FP]), and one smoked product (masmin) collected from Tuticorin market, southern India. Trace metal (TM) levels in canned, pickled, and smoked fish varied from 0.01 to 1.48, 0.009 to 0.94, and 0.08 to 4.13 mg/kg, respectively. The concentration of TMs in the seafood was observed in the following order: As > Cr > Pb > Ni > Cd > Hg. Regarding their accumulation in the seafood products, masmin showed the highest levels followed by SIO, MIO, TIO, FP, and PP. The results revealed that smoked products showed higher TM concentrations, followed by canned and pickled products. The level of TMs in seafood products was below the maximum residue limit set by the European Commission (EC/1881/2006) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Risk assessment for consumer health implied that the evaluated target hazard quotient (THQ < 1), hazard index (HI < 1), and target cancer risk (TCR < 1.E-04) values did not exceed their guideline values and did not cause non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health impacts through seafood product consumption. The pollution index (P i ) values of TMs in seafood products ranged from 0.01 to 0.7, with As and Cd showing the lowest and highest values, which were below 0.7, indicating their safety for consumption. The metal pollution index (MPI) for TMs in seafood ranged from 9.E-05 to 0.007, with the lowest and highest values associated with PP and TIO products. The MPI value for seafood products was below 1, signifying low TMs accumulation, suggesting the safety of seafood for consumption. The maximum seafood meal consumption limit (CR mm ) was calculated, showing that adults can safely consume > 16 meals/month without chronic or acute toxicity. Carrageenan-based active/intelligent packaging films containing anthocyanin and ZnO-doped CD (Zn-CD) from purple Kohlrabi peels were prepared for freshness monitoring and shelf-life extension of shrimp, and the influence of additives on the films' physical, functional, and structural properties was investigated. The films showed excellent UV blocking ability (85.2% of UV-A and 99.4% of UV-B) and high antioxidant effect (∼99% for ABTS and ∼ 58.6% for DPPH radical scavenging activity) and showed strong antibacterial activity to stop the growth (100%) of L. monocytogenes and to reduce the growth of E. coli by 8.1 log CFU/mL after 12 h of incubation. In shrimp packaging experiments, the films were evident in the freshness monitoring, reduced spoilage, and increased shelf life. The recently discovered deep-sea Capelinhos hydrothermal edifice, ~ 1.5 km of the main Lucky Strike (LS) vent field (northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge), contrasts with the other LS edifices in having poorly-altered end-member hydrothermal fluids with low pH and chlorine, and high metal concentrations. Capelinhos unique chemistry and location offer the opportunity to test the effects of local abiotic filters on faunal community structure while avoiding the often-correlated influence of dispersal limitation and depth. In this paper, we characterize for the first time the distribution patterns of the Capelinhos faunal communities, and analyze the benthic invertebrates (> 250 µm) inhabiting diffusive-flow areas and their trophic structures (δ 13 C, δ 15 N and δ 34 S). We hypothesized that faunal communities would differ from those of the nearest LS vent edifices, showing an impoverished species subset due to the potential toxicity of the chemical environment. Conversely, our results show that: (1) community distribution resembles that of other LS edifices, with assemblages visually dominated by shrimps (close to high-temperature focused-fluid areas) and mussels (at low-temperature diffuse flow areas); (2) most species from diffuse flow areas are well-known LS inhabitants, including the bed-forming and chemosymbiotic mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus and (3) communities are as diverse as those of the most diverse LS edifices. On the contrary, stable isotopes suggest different trophodynamics at Capelinhos. The high δ 15 N and, especially, δ 13 C and δ 34 S values suggest an important role of methane oxidation (i.e., methanotrophy), rather than the sulfide oxidation (i.e., thiotrophy) that predominates at most LS edifices. Our results indicate that Capelinhos shows unique environmental conditions, trophic structure and trophodynamics, yet similar fauna, compared to other LS edifices, which suggest a great environmental and trophic plasticity of the vent faunal communities at the LS., (© 2024. Crustaceans are the champions of mineral mobilization and deposition in the animal kingdom due to their unique ability to rapidly and periodically mineralize and demineralize their exoskeletons. They are commonly covered with mineralized exoskeletons for protection and regularly molt throughout their lives. Mineralized crustacean exoskeletons are formed under the control of macromolecules especially matrix proteins but the types of matrix proteins are understudied compared to those in molluscan shells. This gap hinders our understanding of their evolutionary paths compared with those of molluscs. Here, we comprehensively analyzed matrix proteins in the exoskeleton of two crabs, one shrimp, and one crayfish and resulted in a major improvement (∼10-fold) in the identification of biomineralization proteins compared to conventional methods for decapod crustaceans. By a comparison with well-studied molluscan biomineralization proteins, we found that decapod crustaceans evolved novel proteins to form mineralized exoskeletons while sharing some proteins with those of molluscs. Our study sheds light on their evolution and adaption to different environment for exoskeleton formation and provides a foundation for further studies of mineralization in crustaceans under normal and climate-changed conditions. Plastic waste from the fishing industry, particularly lobster trap identification tags from the USA and Canada, poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems due to its resilience. This study unveils a novel link between North American fisheries and the appearance of these plastic tags in Macaronesia. Collected in the Azores and Canary Islands, these tags offer a unique insight into the sources and spatio-temporal scales of marine plastic pollution. Ocean model data indicates the Labrador Current and Gulf Stream as key forces transporting these tags. Virtual particle simulations show a small fraction reaching Macaronesia (4.12 % in the Azores, 0.76 % in the Canary Islands), suggesting real ocean drift. The Azores, with more collected tags, are more susceptible, and tags can reach Macaronesia in under a year. Chitin extraction from the shells of American lobsters (Homarus americanus) was optimized through the use of response surface methodology (RSM). The demineralization step was optimized to minimize the ash content of shell samples and the deproteination step was optimized to minimize the protein content of the chitin product. At a laboratory scale, one set of optimized conditions for the demineralization step was 7.35 % w/w acetic acid at a 40 mL/g of powdered lobster shell ratio for 15 min; this lowered the ash content from 39.62 % to 0.41 ± 0.08 %. A set of optimized conditions for the deproteination step at a similar scale was 4 % w/w sodium hydroxide at a 43 mL/g demineralized shell ratio heated to 95 °C for 83 min. These conditions were indicated to entirely remove protein from the resultant chitin. In this contribution we have compiled the papers published by Christoph D. Schubart, the species named by him and his coauthors, and the species named in his honour. At the date of compiling these lists, Christoph has published 205 papers, many with his students as first authors. More than 50 taxa, all decapod crustaceans, have been named by Christoph, and his colleagues have named more than 15 taxa in his honour. His career has been characterized by collaborations, and we expect these lists to grow during the coming years, when his colleagues continue to conclude the studies Christoph had initiated before his tragic death. All nervous systems are multiply modulated by polypeptides. However, a bulk of transmitter and modulation research has historically focused on small molecule transmitters released at synaptic sites. The stomatogastric nervous system (controls digestive movements of the foregut) and cardiac nervous system of decapod crustaceans have long been used to understand the processes that underlie neuromodulation. The circuits governing the rhythmic output from these nervous systems are comprised of a relatively small number of identified neurons, and the details of these nervous systems are well-defined. Here we discuss recent research highlighting advances in our understanding of peptidergic modulation in these systems. In particular, we focus on our ability to identify specific signaling peptide sequences and relate their expression patterns to their physiological effects, as well as on the multiple sites within a pattern generator-effector system at which modulation takes place. Recent efforts have enabled us to understand how co-modulation by two or more peptides can generate surprising effects on circuit physiology and that modulation at different receptor sites can produce supra-additive effects. There is little known about the growth and survival of naturally-occurring Vibrio parahaemolyticus in harvested raw shrimps. In this study, the fate of naturally-occurring V. parahaemolyticus in post-harvest raw shrimps was investigated from 4℃ to 30℃ using real-time PCR combined with propidium monoazide (PMA-qPCR). The Baranyi-model was used to fit the growth and survival data. A square root model and non-linear Arrhenius model was then used to quantify the parameters derived from the Baranyi-model. The results showed that naturally-occurring V. parahaemolyticus were slowly inactivated at 4℃ and 7℃ with deactivation rates of 0.019 Log CFU/g/h and 0.025 Log CFU/g/h. Conversely, at 15, 20, 25, and 30 °C, the average maximum growth rates (μ max ) of naturally-occurring V. parahaemolyticus were determined to be 0.044, 0.105, 0.179 and 0.336 Log CFU/g/h, accompanied by the average lag phases (λ) of 15.5 h, 7.3 h, 4.4 h and 3.7 h. The validation metrics, A f and B f , for both the square root model and non-linear, indicating that the model had a good ability to predict the growth behavior of naturally-occurring V. parahaemolyticus in post-harvest raw shrimps. Furthermore, a comparative exploration between the growth of artificially contaminated V. parahaemolyticus in cooked shrimps and naturally-occurring V. parahaemolyticus in post-harvest raw shrimps revealed intriguing insights. While no substantial distinction in deactivation rates emerged at 4 °C and 7 °C (P > 0.05), a discernible disparity in growth rates was observable at 15 °C, 20 °C, 25 °C, and 30 °C, with the former surpassing the latter. Which indicated the risk of V. parahaemolyticus using models derived from cooked shrimps may be biased. Our study also unveiled a discernible seasonal effect. The μ max and λ of V. parahaemolyticus in shrimps harvested in summer were similar to those harvested in autumn, while the initial and maximum bacterial concentration harvested in summer were higher than those harvested in autumn. Predators in aquatic environments can be exposed to microplastics (MPs) directly through water and indirectly through prey. Laboratory experiments were conducted to study the potential of MP trophic transfer in Baltic Sea littoral food chains of different lengths. The longest studied food chain had three trophic levels: zooplankton, chameleon shrimp (Praunus flexuosus) and rockpool prawn (Palaemon elegans). 10 μm fluorescence microspheres were used as tracer MP particles and MP ingestion was verified with epifluorescence microscopy. Transfer of MPs occurred up to both second and third trophic level. The number of ingested microspheres in both chameleon shrimp and rockpool prawn was higher when the animals were exposed through pre-exposed prey in comparison to direct exposure through the water. Decapod iridescent virus 1 (DIV1) is an emerging pathogen that mainly threatens decapod crustaceans, causing high mortalities and leading to huge economic losses. In this study, a pair of specific primers were designed for the major capsid protein (MCP) gene of DIV1, and a SYBR Green I-based real-time PCR method was developed. The method displayed good linearity (R 2  = 1.000) and good repeatability in detecting standards of DIV1 MCP fragments ranging from 6.2 × 10 1 to 6.2 × 10 8 DNA copies/μl. Specificity analysis revealed that the real-time PCR was specific for DIV1 and did not react with other common shrimp pathogens or healthy shrimp DNA. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the real-time PCR could efficiently detect DIV1 DNA as low as 62 copies/μl within 35 cycles. Ghost shrimps (Crustacea: Decapoda) demonstrate remarkable levels of niche selection and habitat diversity. Due to their cryptic life style, interactions between ghost shrimp assemblages and environmental parameters that potentially shape their local distribution are poorly understood. In the present study, ghost shrimp assemblages from the Persian Gulf (PG) and the Gulf of Oman (GO) were investigated to assess the main drivers determining their assemblage structure along a wide niche type and at a large geographic scale. During three large-scale oceanographic expeditions, sediments samples for biological and physicochemical analysis were collected by box corer (0.1 m 2 ) from 62 stations. The spatial distribution of collected samples was evaluated based on sediment parameters obtained on grain size, total organic content (TOM) and carbonate, as well as water parameters including pH, temperature, depth, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll α and salinity. Our results indicated a biodiversity hotspot for ghost shrimp in the north-western part of PG and the eastern part of GO. Aqaballianassa ehsani is the most frequent species in this research. DistLM analysis revealed that the abundance of ghost shrimps in the region is significantly corelated with TOM and Sand. Furthermore, a step-wise regression model highlighted that each ghost shrimp species is influenced by specific environmental factors. Our findings provide new insight in niche preferences of the two Michaelcallianassa congeners. In the American Museum of Natural History, New York, there is an old specimen labelled as "Holodromia harrisonwilliamsi Boone, MS name" that was collected from Cocos Island in 1925. This name has never been published. An examination of the specimen shows that it is a juvenile specimen of Homolodromia robertsi Garth, 1973, a species described from Peru, which has since been reported from Chile and off the coast of Ecuador. The phylogeny of field crabs has been under profuse discussion for several decades. At this juncture, this paper reassesses the "decades old" phylogenetic status of an edible field crab, hitherto referred to as Paratelphusa hydrodromous , inhabiting the paddy fields of Chelari village (Kerala, India). After Alcock's (1910) description, there has hardly been any serious attempt at ascertaining its precise taxonomic status. Through an integrated approach, using parsimony analysis and molecular methods, the present study reveals the candidate form's (species') closer affinity to the genus Oziotelphusa. Comparison of morphological and molecular characteristics with its closest phylogenetic neighbours (O. biloba , O. wagrakarowensis , O. kerala and O. aurantia) has shown that the candidate form is a taxonomically distinct entity, qualified to be considered as an unreported species; its suggested revised nomenclature is Oziotelphusa chelarensis , reminiscent of the village Chelari. Vitellogenin (Vg) is the precursor of vitellin, which is an important female-specific protein stored in oocytes as the major nutrient and energy sources for embryogenesis in oviparous animals. In this study, we performed comprehensive genome-wide analysis of Vg gene family in the prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii, and eight Vg genes designated as MrVg1a, MrVg1b and MrVg2-7 were identified. MrVg1a clusters with the previously described MrVg1b near the end of chromosome 46 and MrVg2 is on the chromosome 42 while MrVg3-7 cluster on the chromosome 23. All the putative MrVg proteins are characterized by the presence of three conserved functional domains: LPD-N, DUF1943 and vWD. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that MrVg1a shares 93% identity with MrVg1b and groups together into a branch while MrVg2-7 group into another branch, suggesting that MrVg1a, 1b and MrVg2-7 might diversify from a common ancestral gene. All the corresponding MrVg transcripts especially for MrVg1 exhibit high expression in the female hepatopancreas at late vitellogensis stage but extremely low in the ovaries except MrVg5, indicating that hepatopancreas is the major site of MrVgs synthesis. In the male, interestingly, MrVg5 and MrVg6 are also highly expressed in the testis, suggesting their potential involvement in testicular development. Bilateral ablation of eyestalk significantly upregulate all the MrVgs mRNA in the female hepatopancreas and the MrVg1 in ovary, but have no effect on the expression of MrVg2-7 in the ovary, demonstrating that eyestalk hormones could promote the ovarian development mostly by inducing the synthesis of MrVgs in the hepatopancreas but rarely in the ovary. Neocaridina denticulata sinensis is a crustacean of major economic significance in the Baiyangdian drainage area. In this study, the first assessment of N. denticulata sinensis genetic diversity and population structure was performed based on sequence analysis of nine polymorphic microsatellite loci and the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (cox1) gene. Samples (n = 192) were collected from four different regions in the Baiyangdian drainage area i.e., Baiyangdian Lake, Jumahe River, Xidayang Reservoir, and Fuhe River. Microsatellite loci analysis identified high levels of genetic diversity represented by observed heterozygosity (Ho) of 0.6865 ∼ 0.9583, expected heterozygosity (He) of 0.7151 ∼ 0.8723, and polymorphism information content (PIC) of 0.6676 ∼ 0.8585. Based on the analysis of cox1 sequences, haplotype diversity (Hd) ranged from 0.568 to 0.853 while nucleotide diversity (π) ranged from 0.0029 to 0.2236. Furthermore, there was no evidence of expansion events in the N. denticulata sinensis populations. Pairwise F ST revealed pronounced genetic differentiation, and clustering analyses showed defined genetic structures within the N. denticulata sinensis population. Three groups were identified from four sampled stocks, with Xidayang Reservoir, and Fuhe River populations clustered in the same group. Anthropogenic-mediated climate change severely affects the oceans. The most common definition of a Marine heatwave (MHW) considers that water temperatures rise above the 90th percentile threshold values, based on the last 30 years' average of temperature records for a particular location, and remains this high for five or more days. The current review addresses the evolution of definitions used, as well as the current understanding of the driving mechanisms of MHWs. The collected information shows that the study of MHW is recent and there is a growing interest among the scientific community on this topic, motivated largely by the impacts that pose to marine ecosystems. Further, a more in-depth analysis was carried out, addressing the impacts of MHW events on marine decapod crustacean species. The investigation of such impacts has been carried out using three main methodological approaches: the analysis of in situ records, observed in 33 studies; simulating MHW events through mesocosm experiments, found in 6 studies; and using computational predictive models, detected in 1 study. From the literature available it has been demonstrated that consequences are serious for these species, from altered expansion ranges to alterations of assemblages' abundances. Still, studies addressing the impacts of these extreme events on the decapod communities are scarce, often only limited to adult life forms of commercially relevant species, neglecting non-commercial ones and meroplanktonic life stages. Despite the severe impacts on the health of ecosystems, repercussions on socioeconomic human activities, like fisheries and aquaculture, are also a reality. Overall, this review aims to raise scientific and public awareness of these marine events, which are projected to increase in intensity and frequency in the coming decades. Abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG), negatively impacts marine environments. Managing ALDFG in Atlantic Canada is challenging due to knowledge gaps on loss rates, locations, data availability/accuracy, impacts, and regulatory barriers for retrieval. This study removed ALDFG in Southwest Nova Scotia in collaboration with local fishers (with local knowledge and practical ALDFG removal expertise), government, non-profit organizations, and academia. A total of 29,298 kg of ALDFG was retrieved, including 24,630 kg using towed grapples covering ~3986 km of seafloor and 4668 kg from shorelines (comprising, 68 % lobster traps and 12 % dragger cable by weight). Traps ranged from <1 to 37 years old (median, 10 years). Traps continued to catch target and non-target species with 25 species released, including 652 individual lobsters (82 % were market-sized) and 57 fish (42 were species-at-risk). Hepatopancreatic microsporidiosis (HPM) caused by Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) is a disease of utmost concern in almost all shrimp growing countries. The pathogen was characterized by ultramicrography, histopathology and phylogenetic analysis of 18srDNA. A total of 183 biological samples were collected from all major shrimp growing states of the country.The histology technique could be used very well in identifying the site of infection and can aid in diagnosis of EHP. Wet mount and Ultramicrography were employed to observe the structure of spores. A single step PCR based method was developed for detecting the pathogen from variety of DNA samples including shrimp and non-shrimp sources.The developed PCR assay proved to be a robust and reliable technique to detect EHP in shrimps and environmental samples and for assessing the distribution of pathogen within geographical zones, thus aid in mitigating the disease. The PCR primers was also used to generate DIG labelled probe which was successful in binding to the EHP infected cells in HP of shrimp. The presence of pathogen was confirmed from many non-shrimp environmental samples suggests that they could act as reservoirs for recurrent infection in shrimp ponds. The introduction of non-indigenous species to aquatic ecosystems is one of the main threats to global biodiversity. This paper reports the occurrence of the blue swimmer crab Portunus segnis in southwestern European waters (i.e., the Gulf of Cadiz). We discuss the invasive potential of P. segnis and possible mechanisms of its expansion into this new region. Plastic litter, including microplastics, is an ever-growing threat adversely affecting a variety of marine organisms; however, their known effects on marine organisms are still lacking. Aristaeomorpha foliacea is a valuable commercial deep-sea species in the Mediterranean Sea. Hence, due to its importance to human consumption, the investigation of plastic impact on these animals is vitally necessary. In this study the occurrence of ingested plastics has been studied in the giant red shrimp for the first time in the eastern Ionian Sea, as well as any possible differences regarding the plastic ingestion per sex, size, year and its relation to shrimp's health condition. A total of 621 individuals were collected from the Essential Habitat of this species in the eastern Ionian Sea. Plastics were contained in the stomachs of 14.65 % of the examined individuals, with an average of 2.97 ± 0.3 items per stomach. The occurrence of plastics was higher in males than in females. The ingested plastics detected were exclusively fibers of different sizes, colors, and shapes (single form or tangled balls). Plastic items size ranged from 0.75 to 110.59 mm. Significant differences in the occurrence of plastic in the stomachs of A. foliacea were found among years, stations and sex, whereas no considerable effect on shrimp's health condition factors was found. The chemical analysis of plastics showed that 83.82 % of fibers were polyester (PET). Among the shrimps with ingested plastics, the immature individuals were predominant (85.18 %). The results of this study aspire to increase the knowledge on plastics ingestion in the Mediterranean, and highlight the various factors that may be involved in this process. Shrimp meat is prone to autolysis and decay due to the abundance of endogenous enzymes and contamination from microorganisms. HVEF freezing can slow the spoilage of shrimp, producing small and uniform ice crystals, resulting in less damage to muscle tissue. In this study, HVEF technique was used to freeze the shrimp (Solenocera melantho), and the UPLC-MS metabolic technique was used to investigate the metabolites of frozen shrimp meat. Compared with the control group, 367 differential metabolites were identified in the HVEF group. Mapping them to the KEGG database, there were 108 with KEGG ID. Purine metabolism and pyrimidine metabolism were the most enriched pathways. In addition, phosphatidylcholines (PCs), inosine (HxR), and l-valine were identified as potential biomarkers associated with lipid, nucleotide, and organic acid metabolism, respectively. This study was conducted for the first time to investigate the long-term impacts of sublethal concentrations of 17 α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) on growth, survival, and reproductive performances in a model shrimp, the red cherry (Neocaridina davidi), females during five successive spawning steps for 7.5 months. Females were distributed in eighteen aquariums and continuously exposed to EE2 at six nominal concentrations of 0 (control), 0.02, 0.2, 2, 20, and 200 μg/L. Growth indices increased up to 0.2 μg/L and then sharply declined up to 200 μg/L. Most reproductive indices significantly decreased at levels > 0.02-0.2 μg/L with increasing EE2 levels. The highest absolute, relative, and actual fecundity values were recorded in the control, with the lowest value at 200 μg/L. With increasing EE2 levels, mean egg volume showed an increasing trend from the third spawning event onwards. Except for the time required to reach the first spawning, inter-spawning intervals considerably decreased with increasing EE2 levels at > 0.2 μg/L, especially from the third spawning stage onwards. Survival of exposed females significantly decreased with increasing EE2 levels. Unlike the body size, the juvenile's survival rates in all exposed treatments were considerably lower than the control. Females at concentrations 0.02-0.2 μg/L gained more body weight and length but produced fewer eggs with lower hatching percentages during five consecutive spawns. The results suggest that EE2 depending on the concentrations can cause unbalanced growth, reduce reproductive performances, especially from the third stage of spawning onwards, and reduce survival rates in brooders and subsequent offspring. Cadmium (Cd) is a hazardous metal that can accumulate in aquatic organisms and endanger human health via the food chain. In this study, genetic engineering was used to display a peptide with Cd-binding potential on the surface of Escherichia coli cells. This whole-cell adsorbent exhibited high affinity for Cd ions (Cd 2+ ) in the solution. The Cd 2+ adsorption capacity of the whole-cell adsorbent was three-fold that of the control cells in a 20 μM Cd 2+ solution, and 97.2% ± 2.38% of the Cd 2+ was removed. The whole-cell adsorbent was fed to shrimp (Neocaridina denticulata), and the surface-engineered E. coli successfully colonized the shrimp intestine, which showed significantly less Cd accumulation than the group not fed surface-engineered E. coli. The whole-cell adsorbent evidently protected shrimp from the toxicity of Cd 2+ by adsorbing it. Moreover, the whole-cell adsorbent mitigated the changes in microbial community structure in the shrimp gut caused by the exposure of Cd 2+ . This work aims to synthesize, characterize and evaluate the biological activity of nanochitosan (NQ) prepared from shrimp, showing an innovative character and correlating with sustainable development, in promoting an alternative to the solid waste (shrimp) shell and a biological application of the novel nanomaterial. The NQ synthesis was carried out by the alkaline deacetylation process of chitin obtained of the demineralization, deproteinization and deodorization steps from shrimp shells. NQ was characterized by X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), N 2 porosimetry (BET/BJH methods), zeta potential (ZP) and zero charge point (pH ZCP ). To evaluate the safety profile was carried out the cytotoxicity, DCFHA and NO tests in 293T and HaCat cell lines. Regarding the cell viability, NQ did not show toxicity for the tested cell lines. In the evaluation of the ROS production and NO tests, there was no increase in the levels of free radicals and between the negative control, respectively. Simple Summary: Artemia is an important crustacean group, especially for aquaculture live food and as a model organism for toxicity assessment. The present study aimed to identify the current trends, research gaps, and literature development in the study of Artemia around the world. This primitive Arthropod has undergone significant evolution in terms of its application in various industries as well as relevant literature patterns in terms of scientometric analyses. An increasing number of scientists since 1970 has examined Artemia as an important species in aquaculture-related fields. However, a global scientometric review of Artemia literature is still lacking, which is the objective of this research. Using a CiteSpace analysis, the distribution of core authors and institutions, highly cited keywords and papers, author and journal contributions, and hot topics in the literature, as well as a co-citation analysis, particularly regarding authors, journals, documents, and clusters, were determined. Hence, 8741 relevant publications were generated from the Web of Science Core Collection database. The results revealed that the most significant contributions in Artemia research primarily originated from the USA, Brazil, Spain, India, China, and Belgium. Moreover, Artemia research focused mainly on top keywords such as brine shrimp and antimicrobial activity. Emerging trends related to Artemia research were Atlantic halibut, elongation factor, Artemia salina, lean protein, inert diet, alpha-crystallin protein, and Artemia embryo. At the same time, the study generated a vast total of 45 co-citation clusters. The present study provides the existing body of knowledge on Artemia research by sharing a visual knowledge map. This study offers a valuable perspective and profound understanding for researchers, farmers, and consortia interested in promoting Artemia as a sustainable live food in the global aquaculture industry. A new species of gall crab collected from elegance coral, Catalaphyllia jardinei, is described in this paper. The male holotype was collected from a reef tank in Germany in 2016, and it is described here using integrative taxonomy. This species, named Lithoscaptus aquarius sp. nov., is the thirteenth assigned to the genus. It is morphologically and phylogenetically closest to Lithoscaptus semperi, a cryptochirid associated with Trachyphyllia geoffroyi. Like L. semperi, it has a large, broad W-shaped depression on the anterior half of the carapace, but the carapace surface of L. aquarius sp. nov. is smooth overall, lacking spines or tubercles.
