Quantifying the relative influences of anthropogenic activities and climate change on soil erosion and deposition during the Holocene, when both forces have been interacting is a complex problem. Analysis of long-term patterns in soil erosion and lake deposition in a basin can provide the basis for untangling the complexities of climate and anthropogenic forcings. In this paper, sedimentary sequences from Xingyun Lake are compared with simulated soil erosion rates in the basin to explore the relationship between river basin soil erosion and lake deposition during the Holocene in Yunnan, China. Modern soil erosion rates are calculated using RUSLE, while Holocene soil erosion rates are estimated using modern rates with reconstructed precipitation and vegetation cover sequences. Through this investigation, we found the following results. First, Holocene vegetation in the lake basin was mainly affected by climate change, and the vegetation experienced the same pattern of changes as the climate. Soil erosion and lake deposition rates, along with changes to vegetation cover, were synchronous with precipitation trends during the Holocene. Second, soil erosion and lake deposition have been exacerbated by human activities, such as deforestation and land reclamation in the Xingyun Lake basin. Finally, this study provides new insights into the effects by anthropogenic impacts and climate forcing on the processes of soil erosion and lake deposition on the millennium scale. Eight extant species of pangolins are currently recognized. Recent studies found that two mitochondrial haplotypes identified in confiscations in Hong Kong could not be assigned to any known pangolin species, implying the existence of a species. Here, we report that two additional mitochondrial haplotypes identified in independent confiscations from Yunnan align with the putative species haplotypes supporting the existence of this mysterious species/population. To verify the new species scenario we performed a comprehensive analysis of scale characteristics and 138 whole genomes representing all recognized pangolin species and the cryptic new species, 98 of which were generated here. Our morphometric results clearly attributed this cryptic species to Asian pangolins (Manis sp.) and the genomic data provide robust and compelling evidence that it is a pangolin species distinct from those recognized previously, which separated from the Philippine pangolin and Malayan pangolin over 5 Mya. Our study provides a solid genomic basis for its formal recognition as the ninth pangolin species or the fifth Asian one, supporting a new taxonomic classification of pangolins. The effects of glacial climate changes and recent anthropogenic activities driven by illegal trade are inferred to have caused its population decline with the genomic signatures showing low genetic diversity, a high level of inbreeding, and high genetic load. Our finding greatly expands current knowledge of pangolin diversity and evolution and has vital implications for conservation efforts to prevent the extinction of this enigmatic and endangered species from the wild. Purpose: The effects of anthropogenic activity and climate change on lake ecosystems for nine large plateau lakes in Yunnan Province have recently received much attention; however, most studies have focused on the deepest lake sediments and ignored the lake sediments adjacent to the populated area. Materials and methods: To evaluate the sedimentation rates and ecological changes, four 210Pb- and 137Cs-dated sediment cores were collected along the long axis of Yangzong Lake, a fault-controlled north-south strike lake located in Yunnan Plateau in July 2006 and July 2016, respectively. We combined a biological indicator (diatom assemblage) with geochemical indicators (total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP)) for core S0 in the southern part of the lake to examine the ecological changes in response to anthropogenic disturbances within the lake over the last 60 years. Results and discussion: The results showed that the sedimentation rate in the southern part of the lake (S1) was significantly higher than that in the central (S2) and northern (S3) parts of the lake. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and Pearson correlation analysis identified significant correlations between TP and Aulacoseira granulata, Cyclotella ocellata, and Cyclotella rohomboideo-elliptica (correlation coefficients: − 0.66, − 0.63, and 0.81, respectively, p < 0.01). There was a clear shift in the diatom community from oligotrophic to eutrophic species becoming dominant after the 1990s, coinciding with the intensifying human activities around the lake. Furthermore, there were two periods of diatom absence in core S0, which was associated with two periods of rapid depositional events. These are likely associated with the intensification of industry, mining, road construction, and agriculture within the lake catchment. Conclusions: These findings highlight the sensitivity of freshwater ecosystems in the shallow-water area of a lake to human activities, with implications for future water quality in fault-controlled lakes.
