To date the final stage in deglaciation of the Greenland shelf, when a contiguous ice sheet margin on the inner shelf transitioned to outlet glaciers in troughs with intervening ice-free areas, we generated cosmogenic 10 Be dates from bedrock knobs on six outlying islands along a stretch of 300 km of the southwestern Greenland coast. Despite 10 Be inheritance influencing some dates, the ages generally support a Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) margin that retreated off the inner shelf during the middle Younger Dryas (YD) period. Published 10 Be- and 14 C-dated records show that this history of the GrIS margin is seen in other parts of Greenland but with large variations in the extent and speed of retreat, sometimes even between neighbouring areas. Areas with a chronology extending into the Allerød period show no marked ice margin change at the Allerød–YD transition except in northernmost Greenland. In contrast, landforms on the shelf (moraines and grounding zone wedges) have been suggested to indicate YD readvances or long-lasting ice margin stillstands on the middle shelf. However, these features have been dated primarily by correlation with cold periods in the ice core temperature records. Ice margin retreat during the middle and late YD is explained by advection of warm subsurface water at the ice margin and by increased seasonality. The morphology, sedimentology and architecture of an end moraine formed by a ∼9 km surge of Brúarjökull in 1963–64 are described and related to ice-marginal conditions at surge termination. Field observations and accurate mapping using digital elevation models and high-resolution aerial photographs recorded at surge termination and after the surge show that commonly the surge end moraine was positioned underneath the glacier snout by the termination of the surge. Ground-penetrating radar profiles and sedimentological data reveal 4–5 m thick deformed sediments consisting of a top layer of till overlying gravel and fine-grained sediments, and structural geological investigations show that the end moraine is dominated by thrust sheets. A sequential model explaining the formation of submarginal end moraines is proposed. The hydraulic conductivity of the bed had a major influence on the subglacial drainage efficiency and associated porewater pressure at the end of the surge, thereby affecting the rates of subglacial deformation. High porewater pressure in the till decreased its shear strength and raised its strain rate, while low porewater pressure in the underlying gravel had the opposite effect, such that the gravel deformed more slowly than the till. The principal velocity component was therefore located within the till, allowing the glacier to override the gravel thrust sheets that constitute the end moraine. The model suggests that the processes responsible for the formation of submarginal end moraines are different from those operating during the formation of proglacial end moraines. Simultaneously with geological field investigations at the surge-type glacier Brúarjökull in August 2003, aerial photographs covering the central part of the glacier including the Kringilsárrani area were recorded with the purpose of mapping glacial landforms. A glacial geomorphological map has been completed at a scale 1:16,000 including more than 20,000 landforms from an area of c. 8 km². Manual classification of landforms was carried out directly in stereoscopic view using a digital photogrammetric workstation taking full advantage of the texture, topography and spatial context of individual landforms. We mapped subglacial lineations such as flutes and drumlins on till plains, pitted outwash, eskers, minor meandering ridges, crevasse fill ridges, ice-free dead-ice moraine and concertina ridges, outwash fans and lake sediment plains. In addition, erosional drainage channels, ice-marginal ridges, overridden end-moraines, and extra-marginal ice wedge polygons and collapsed palsas were mapped. The mapped glacial landforms originate from at least four surges: pre-1810, 1810, 1890 and 1964. The distribution of landforms on the Brúarjökull forefield has close resemblance to landform assemblages of palaeo-ice streams. The present terrain surface at Brúarjökull is the cumulated result of multiple landform generations because each surge has superimposed a new association of landforms on older surfaces. An extensive dead-ice area has developed at the stagnant snout of the Holmströmbreen glacier, Svalbard, following its last advance during the Little Ice Age (LIA). The most common landform is ice-cored slopes hosting sediment gravity flows. Dead-ice melting is described and quantified through field studies and analyses of high-resolution, multi-temporal aerial photographs and QuickBird 2 satellite imagery. Field measurements of backwasting of ice-cored slopes indicate melting rates of 9.2 cm/day. Downwasting rates reveal a dead-ice surface lowering of 0.9 m/yr from 1984 to 2004. The volume of melted dead-ice in the marginal zone since the LIA is estimated at 2.72 km3. Most prominently, dead-ice melting causes the growth of an ice-walled lake with an area increasing near-exponentially over the last 40 years. Despite the high-Arctic setting, dead-ice melting progresses with similar rates as in humid sub-polar climates, stressing that melt rates are governed by processes and topography rather than climate. We suggest that the permafrost and lack of glacier karst prevent meltwater percolation, thus maintaining a liquefied debris-cover where new dead-ice is continuously exposed to melting. As long as backwasting and mass movement processes prevent build-up of an insulating debris-cover, the de-icing continues despite the continuous permafrost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mature dead-ice has been overridden repeatedly by the Brúarjökull glacier, and multiple generations of ice-cored landforms occur, with ice cores originating at least from glacier surges in 1963-1964, 1890 and 1810. Ice-cores are located on the proximal slopes of end moraines and in the valleys, as ice-cored outwash and eskers, ice-cored drumlins and ice-cored moraine patches. This dictates that the sediments and internal architecture might not always match their end-products as de-icing progresses. Analysis of multi-temporal aerial photographs integrated with annual field measurements showed that the time required for a total de-icing in the forefield exceeds the duration of the quiescent phases between the surges, even in the current climate at the limit of permafrost. Quantifying melting progression suggests that complete de-icing of ice-cored landforms is not likely to occur. The mean de-icing rate is c. 9.8 cm/yr in 1890 ice-cored moraines, and c. 17.7 cm/yr in 1963-1964 ice-cored moraines. Backwasting of ice-cored slopes (c. 30 cm/yr) is the fastest melt process. Long-term downwasting rates derived from multi-temporal digital elevation models provide a superior insight into the impact of multiple glacier surges on the formation of dead-ice moraines in front of Brúarjökull. Knowledge about the future response of the Greenland Ice Sheet to global climate change, including ice sheet contributions to sea level rise, is important for understanding the impact of climate change on society. Such studies rely in ice sheet model predictions and improved chronological constraints of past ice sheet extents and paleoclimatic trends. Many regions in Greenland are well studied, but northwest Greenland and especially Melville Bay, being one of the most important regions in terms of dynamical ice mass loss, lack a firm chronology of Holocene ice marginal fluctuations. In this study, we present the first comprehensive chronology for Melville Bay spanning 73.1–75.7°N based on 36 new 10Be exposure ages of boulders and 39 new radiocarbon ages of marine molluscs in Little Ice Age moraines. From weighted mean 10Be exposure ages, excluding 6 outliers, we find that the outer coast in Melville Bay was deglaciated ∼11.6 ± 0.3 ka (n = 15) and the ice margin reached its present-day position 40 km farther inland ∼11.5 ± 0.3 ka (n = 15). Our results suggest an interval of rapid ice-marginal retreat (i.e. collapse) of the northwest GrIS in Melville Bay, most likely triggered by rapidly rising atmospheric temperatures in early Holocene. Additionally, combining the comprehensive dataset of new radiocarbon ages with 26 radiocarbon ages from previous studies shows a restricted ice sheet extent from 9.1 ± 0.2 to 0.4 ± 0.1 cal ka BP, which coincides with increased sea surface temperatures. Our results highlight past ice sheet sensitivity towards climate changes in one of the least explored and most vulnerable regions of Greenland. Furthermore, comparing our new results to already existing ice sheet models (Huy3 and Huy3b) emphasize the proximal relevance of the Agassiz ice core temperature reconstruction for Melville Bay, which indicates the possible sensitivity of the ice sheet to a warming climate and place improved constraints on ice sheet simulations. • The northwest Greenland Ice Sheet was very sensitive to past climate changes. • The marine-based part of the ice sheet collapsed in Early Holocene. • The ice sheet was smaller than present throughout middle and late Holocene. • Rising atmospheric and sea surface temperatures drove deglaciation. • Ice sheet models do not fully capture this behaviour and improvements are needed.
