Petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) can be biodegraded into CO 2 , and PHC-contaminated aquifers are always deemed as carbon sources. Fortunately, some carbon fixation microorganisms have been found in PHC-contaminated sites. However, most of the studies are related to volatile short-chain PHC, and few studies focus on long-chain PHC-contaminated sites. To reveal the carbon fixation microorganisms in these sites, in the study, a long-chain PHC polluted site in North China was selected. Through hydrochemical and metagenomics analysis, the structure and capacity of carbon fixing microorganisms in the site were revealed. Results showed that there were many kinds of carbon fixed microorganisms that were identified such as Flavobacterium, Pseudomonas. HP/4HB, rTCA, and DC/4HB cycles were dominated carbon fixation pathways. The long-chain PHC were weakly correlated with carbon fixation microorganisms, but it may stimulate the growth of some carbon fixation microorganisms, such as microorganisms involved in rTCA cycle. Anthropogenic groundwater arsenic (As) pollution is common in many aquifers in Southwest China. It is concerned that long-term random disposal of As smelting slag could induce the transport of high-As groundwater into previously uncontaminated aquifers. Here, we used HELP-MODFLOW-MT3DMS model simulations to integrate the percolation, groundwater flow, and solute transport processes at an aquifer at site scale, constrained by weather, hydrogeology, and monitoring data. Our simulations provide a new method framework of the simulated percolation by HELP model and have induced As spatiotemporal distribution in the aquifer. According to the HELP model simulation results, percolation volume accounts for 24% of rainfall over 18 years. This work determined that the As discharge trend was fitted by double-constants kinetics based on the leaching experiment. And this work calculates total mass distribution of As in the aquifer over 18 years. We have found that the sustained As pollution relies on the rainfall that acts as the primary contributor of elevated As concentrations. Model simulation results suggest that 51.70% of the total As mass (1.96 × 10 4 kg) was fixed in low permeability solid media. The massive exploration and random dumping of coals in various regions of China create serious environmental and health problems because of the presence of toxic trace elements (TTEs), which possibly transfer to environment and cause serious health issues. This study was conducted to probe the environmental consequences of coalmines on the aquifer water and their association with health risks and the environment. For this purpose, 100 s of water samples was collected from the typical coalmine regions of Hancheng, Huanglong, Binxian, Handan, Langao, and Fusui and analyzed for various parameters. In Handan mining areas, Se, Mn, Fe, TDS, SO 4 2- , and total hardness were higher than the WHO standard, while in Hancheng, SO 4 2- was > 95%, Ca 2+ 40-96%, and Mg 2+ was 0-40%, which caused permanent hardness. In the Fusui and Huanglong areas, the SO 4 2- concentration was > 95%, Ca 2+ 60-100%, and Mg 2+ 20%, causing permanent hardness. In Binxian, HCO 3 - was 70-90%, Ca 2+ 60-80%, and Cl - and SO 4 2- were 20%, causing temporary hardness. In the Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) area, Se in the Middle Triassic was 0.3, Upper Triassic 0.23, and Quaternary 0.01, while fluoride (F) was 124.7, 141.6, and 159 in μg L -1 . The Handan water is included in rock-evaporation dominance (a mixed controlling mechanism), Hancheng, Binxian, Huanglong, and Langao water was included in rock dominance, while the Fusui water was included in rock-precipitation dominance. The average daily intake ((ADI) mg kg -1  d -1 ) of Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ti, Tl, Mo, Ni, Zn, Pb, Be, U, and Sr was comparably higher than No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL), which surely causes high health risk in selected regions. The elemental contaminants in the water were attributed to the geological environment, geochemical processes, ion exchanges, redox reactions, and dissolution of mineralized rock. A scientometric analysis based on the Scopus database was conducted to provide insight into research activities on the occurrence of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn) in groundwater during 1970-2019. The selection of these PTEs was based on their significance concerning their reference frequency in environmental science and pollution research (ESPR) studies and their toxicity to living organisms. The analysis utilizes data about the quantity, type, journal, geographical, institutional, and funding patterns of publications. The results indicate that the publications' annual output has increased over the years, and especially after 2000, it presents a remarkable growth rate. The most studied PTEs were As and Pb; nevertheless, the research on the rest of PTEs cannot be neglected as it shows continuously increasing trends over time. The evolution of instrumentation and the dissemination of contamination case studies that affect a large part of the world population contributed significantly to the scientific community and relative stakeholders' interest. According to the analysis, the USA and China are the two principal countries with the most considerable contribution, producing the most research regarding the number of publications, research institutions, and funding sponsors. China owns the most influential research institution (i.e., Chinese Academy of Sciences) and largest funding sponsor (i.e., National Natural Science Foundation of China; ≈5% of global funding) on a worldwide scale due to its investment in research and development (R&D) and is expected to become the greatest force in the future., (© 2021. Understanding the impact of urbanization on groundwater quality is critical. Effective water management requires understanding the relationship between land use and water quality. The study's goals were to compare the effects of land use, identify the types of land that impact hydrochemistry, and define how different land use affects water quality. For this purpose, the comparative relationship between groundwater quality, land use classes and landscape metrics were established for the years 2016 and 2021. Water samples were collected from 42 wells, and different hydro-chemical variables were considered to calculate the water quality index (WQI). The WQI value in 2016 ranged from 26.49 to 151.03 and 29.65 to 155.62 in 2021. The results indicate that the water quality in most parts of the study area is moderate for drinking and domestic purpose use. The google earth engine platform was used and radiometrically corrected and orthorectified Sentinel-2 satellite images were processed to classify land use classes for selected years. Five buffer zones were established within a 2-km watershed along each well site, and the effects of land use types and landscape metrics on water quality in the buffer zones were analyzed. Results revealed that the effects of land use types on water quality were mainly reflected in buffer 1 (B1), buffer 4 (B4), buffer 5 (B5) in 2016 and B1, buffer 3 (B3), and B5 in 2021. The impacts of landscape-level metrics on water quality are mainly reflected in buffer 2 (B2) and B3 in 2021, while at the class-level, they are mainly reflected in B1 and B4 in 2021. Groundwater is the main sources of water supply for drinking purposes in the Ordos Basin in the northwestern part of China. In order to sustain and protect the quality of groundwater resources, shallow groundwater samples were collected and analyzed to identify the hydrogeochemical characteristics, and to evaluate health risk to human. Cluster analysis showed that the 134 groundwater samples were divided into three classes (i.e., class 1, class 2, class 3). The groundwater types are mostly characterized by SO 4 -Cl type and SO 4 type, mixed HCO 3 type. The primary natural mechanisms controlling the chemical compositions are water-rock interaction and evaporation-precipitation. The extremely high concentrations of sulfate could be caused by contamination from pyrite or from infiltration of sulfate from inorganic fertilizers or from wastewater discharges. Results of the assessment of the health risks for ingestion of Cl - , NO 3 - , F - per year for consumption of groundwater sourced from all three cluster classes. The highest risks were for ingestion of arsenic and chromium in groundwater. The highest total risks to adults and children were 1.51 × 10 -6 per year for consumption of groundwater sourced from all three cluster classes. The highest total risks to adults and children were 1.51 × 10 -5 and 2.45 × 10 -2 (class 1), 4.12 × 10 -4 and 8.98 × 10 -3 (class 2), 3.06 × 10 -3 (class 3), respectively. The study showed that there is a high risk of health problems among the residents of the Ordos Basin in China that are ingesting contaminated drinking water, with the health risks to children higher than the risks to adults.-2 (class 3), respectively. Total hardness (TH) is an important index representing the water suitability for domestic purpose. TH is represented mainly by Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ which are essential elements for human bone development. Between 2000 and 2015, the TH values of groundwater in major cities of the Guanzhong Plain varied significantly. The study was carried out to investigate TH variation over 16 years and to examine how effective the grey Markov model was in predicting TH concentrations in time series datasets. The hydrochemical parameters determining TH concentration and their origins were investigated using statistical analysis and geochemical models. The grey Markov model, which is effective in short time series prediction, was used to forecast the multi-time series of TH. The findings demonstrated a prevalence of HCO 3 - in the groundwater types combined with calcite precipitation, gypsum, and dolomite dissolution that increased the concentration of Ca 4 2- in the groundwater types combined with calcite precipitation, gypsum, and dolomite dissolution that increased the concentration of Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , and HCO 3 - , influencing TH variation. The predicted TH values of the eight monitoring wells for the year 2016 were 1213.66, 124.30, 203.66, 103.01, 349.56, 251.23, 453.31, and 471.81 mg/L, respectively. Datasets with low TH variation were more accurately predicted than datasets with high TH variation. This was especially observed on sample B557 where TH concentration in 2010 was 400.33 mg/L and suddenly dropped to 90.1, 82.6, 85.1, 87.6, and 75.1 mg/L in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015, respectively. The study also shows that the Markov chain model can optimize the GM(1,1) model and improve the prediction accuracy significantly. All samples in Weinan City and one sample in Xi'an City showed a significant decrease in TH concentration. Except one sample in Xi'an City, TH concentrations tended to rise in the other cities (Baoji, Xianyang) of the Guanzhong Plain. Groundwater is an important resource of water in arid and semi-arid agricultural regions. Thus, identification of hydrogeochemical characters and the influence of geospatial variability and flow pooling are of significance on groundwater resources management and making irrigation decisions in salinized areas. The study specifically focused on the Hetao Irrigation District located in the semi-arid region of northern China. A total of 85 groundwater samples (42 from the upstream Shenwu Irrigation Area (SWIA), 43 from the downstream Wulate Irrigation Area (WLTIA)) were collected, and 15 water quality indexes were analyzed. Methods including mathematical statistics, Piper diagram, Gibbs model, forward succession model, and ionic rations were used to analyze the hydrochemical characteristics and evolution mechanisms, RSBC, PS, SAR, WQI were selected to evaluate water quality and irrigation suitability from the perspective of salt and alkali damage. Results showed that the groundwater of the study area is weakly alkaline, SWIA is mainly fresh water (47.62%), WLTIA is mainly brackish water (65.12%), and the hydrochemistry of the groundwater consists of Cl-Na type and Cl·SO-Ca·Mg. The solute content of downstream (WLTIA) is higher than that of upstream (SWIA), Na + and Cl - have obvious advantages in WLTIA, and they are the main contribution indicators of groundwater TDS in the study area. The groundwater is subjected to the ongoing influence of rock weathering, ions exchange, and evaporate crystallization Na + mainly originates from the dissolution of evaporate salt rock and silicate rock, and Ca 2+ from the dissolution of gypsum and carbonate. The order of contribution of different rocks is evaporation rock > silicate rock > carbonate rock. Based on the classifications of sodium absorption ratio (SAR), residual sodium bicarbonate (RSBC), and potential salinity (PS), most of the groundwater samples are unsuitable for irrigating, and the groundwater quality of the SWIA is better than that of the WLTIA., (© 2022. Groundwater resources have an important impact on the geo-environment and ecological environment. The exploitation of groundwater resources may induce geo-environmental issues and has a negative impact on the ecological environment. The assessment of groundwater sustainable development can provide reasonable suggestions for the management of groundwater resources in coastal cities. In this study, an assessment method for groundwater sustainable development based on the resource supply function, geo-environment stability function, and ecological environment function was provided. Considering the groundwater quantity and quality; the vulnerability of karst collapse, land subsidence, and seawater intrusion; and the distribution of groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs) and soil erosion, the groundwater in the Pearl River Delta was divided into concentrated groundwater supply area (21.97%) and decentralized groundwater supply area (48.22%), ecological protection area (20.77%), vulnerable geo-environment area (8.94%), and unsuitable to exploit groundwater area (0.10%). ROC curve and single-indicator sensitivity analysis were applied in the assessment of geo-environment vulnerability, and the results showed that the VW-AHP model effectively adjusted the weights of the indicators so that the assessment results were more in line with the actual situation in the Pearl River Delta, and the accuracy of the VW-AHP model was higher than that of the AHP model. This study evaluated the quality of groundwater and its suitability for drinking and irrigation in the hilly area of the Taihang Mountains in Henan Province, China. Groundwater samples were collected from 43 unconfined and 20 confined wells and analyzed. The pollution index of groundwater (PIG) was estimated based on the physicochemical parameters, and seven indices, including the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), sodium percentage (%Na), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), permeability index (PI), magnesium ratio (MR), Kelley's ratio (KR), and corrosivity ratio (CR), were calculated to qualify the groundwater within the research area for irrigation activities. Multivariate statistical techniques were performed to better understand the hydrochemical processes. Chemical analysis showed that the dominant cation and anion were Ca 2+ and HCO 3 - , respectively, and the principal hydrochemical facies was Ca-Mg-HCO 3 . In terms of pH, total dissolved solids, Na + , Cl - , F - , most samples were well within the limits prescribed by Chinese standards for drinking water quality, but more than half of the unconfined samples exceeded the specified limits for total hardness and nitrate. The PIG values suggested the pollution level was insignificant for all confined water samples and 72.09% of unconfined water samples, but the PIG distribution map showed that the water in the south central part of the study area had low to moderate pollution. According to the computed values of SAR, %Na, RSC, PI, KR, and MR and the results of a salinity diagram, the results further indicated that most of the studied samples were appropriate for irrigation usage. Only the CR values rendered 41.86% of the unconfined samples and 20% of the confined samples unfit for irrigation. Hence, proper measures are needed to resolve the corrosivity problem. The study area is a part of the North China Plain, where groundwater is heavily abstracted for drinking and irrigation purposes. Groundwater quality is adversely affected due to rapid economic development and urbanization. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to evaluate the suitability of groundwater for drinking and irrigation purposes and to quantify the associated human health risks in the southern part of Gu'an County, North China Plain. The matter-element extension method based on entropy weight was used to evaluate the water quality for drinking, while sodium adsorption ratio, sodium percentage (%Na), residual sodium carbonate and magnesium hazard were used to evaluate the water quality for irrigation. Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks via different exposure ways were evaluated for different age groups. The study found that the quality of both deep and shallow groundwater in this area was generally suitable for drinking. Deep water quality has better quality than the shallow water. However, 8.70% and 73.92% of water samples pose non-carcinogenic health risks on adults and children, respectively. Children and adults are also at cancer risk due to Cr 6+ and As in drinking groundwater in this area. The main responsible parameters for non-carcinogenic risk are Cr 6+ , F - and Fe, and Cr 6+ is also responsible for carcinogenic risk. These toxic elements are mainly from industries. Therefore, deterioration of groundwater quality can be prevented by strengthening the sewage management of various industries.

The safety of groundwater has been a great concern for irrigation and drinking purposes in recent decades due to the increasing impacts of anthropogenic activities. There are several standards to evaluate the groundwater quality for different utilization purposes. In this paper, 804 samples covering the entire Ordos Basin across five provinces were used to evaluate the irrigation suitability and human health risks. The results showed that the sequence of cationic concentration was Na +  > Ca 2+  > Mg 2+  > K +  > NH 4 + , and the anion concentration was HCO 3 -  > SO 4 2-  > Cl -  > NO 3 -  > F -  > NO 2 - . For drinking purposes, TDS, Na + , SO 4 2- , F - , TH and NO 3 - exceed seriously the regulated standard in the study area. For irrigating purposes, 80% of the water in the study area belongs to "good water" according to the evaluation of salinity and alkalinity. Saline water which is not suitable for irrigation accounts for about 9%. High health risks of fluoride ions are mainly observed to the samples representing the western part of the study area, while the health risks of nitrates spread throughout the study area. Health risk is not only related to location, but also varies with age, and it is found that children suffer more threats than adults.

Datong Basin in China is a typical arid-semiarid inland basin, with high levels and wide distributions of arsenic (As), fluoride (F - ), and iodine (I). To better understand the presence of low-quality groundwater in Datong Basin and assess the health risks for local residents, groundwater samples were collected from the shallow aquifer and in medium-deep groundwater and analyzed for As, F - , I, and nitrate (NO 3 - ). Maxima of 1932 μg/L for As, 80.89 mg/L for F - were detected in shallow groundwater, which greatly exceeded the WHO limits for drinking purpose. High-As groundwater was present in both shallow and medium-deep aquifers. High-F 3 - groundwater was widely distributed in the shallow aquifer, and high-I groundwater was mainly present in the medium-deep aquifers. Poor-quality groundwater in the Datong Basin is mainly caused by local geological and climatic conditions, which are characterized by strong evaporation, active water-rock interactions, thick lacustrine sediment, low groundwater flow rate, and reducing and weak alkaline environments. However, groundwater quality was further impacted by agricultural activities in some areas, as shallow groundwater was also polluted by nitrate. Datong Basin inhabitants face high health risk caused by high concentrations of As, F - and high-NO 3 - ) were 18.40 for children, 10.94 for adult females, and 9.47 for adult males due to exposure to contaminants in shallow groundwater; and 13.76 for children, 8.18 for adult females, and 7.08 for adult males because of exposure to medium-deep groundwater. Further, the carcinogenic risks (CR) caused by exposure to As were very high for local inhabitants, with the mean and median CR values of 4.20×10 - , I, and NO 3 in shallow groundwater and 3.44×10 - . The mean noncarcinogenic risk values (HQ total in medium-deep groundwater, respectively.-3 and 4.13×10 -4 in shallow groundwater and 3.44×10 -3 and 1.71×10 -4 in medium-deep groundwater, respectively.

Groundwater is essential for the sustainable development of the Guanzhong Basin, China, and its quality is mainly controlled by hydrogeochemical processes and anthropogenic pollution. This study used statistical and multivariate statistical analysis approaches to recognize the hydrogeochemical processes and affecting factors of groundwater in the central part of the Guanzhong Basin. Correlations among 14 hydrochemical parameters were statistically examined. Principal component analysis (PCA), factor analysis (FA), and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) techniques were applied to analyze the physicochemical variables to understand the affecting factors of groundwater quality in the study area. The correlation analysis results indicate that cation exchange is the dominant process affecting the concentration of Na + and Ca 2+ in the groundwater. Both the PCA and FA indicate that minerals dissolution/precipitation and human activities are the key factors that affect groundwater quality. All parameters except CO 3 2- and pH increase from C1 to C4 obtained through the Q mode HCA. C4 has a hydrochemical type of SO 4 -Na·K, indicating that the sample of this cluster is primarily influenced by anthropogenic processes.

Effective coastal aquifer management typically relies on numerical models to analyze the seawater intrusion (SI) process. Before using groundwater simulation models to predict the extent of SI in the future, preparing input data is an extremely necessary and important step. For precipitation and sea-level rise (SLR), which are two of the most influential factors for SI, it is difficult to precisely forecast their variations. Current studies of using numerical models to predict future SI often overlook the uncertainty of these two factors. This can result in compromised predictions of SI. In this study, a three-dimensional variable-density groundwater simulation model was established for a coastal area in Longkou, China. Then, the Monte Carlo method was applied to perform uncertainty analysis for the input data of precipitation and SLR of the SI model. In order to reduce the huge computational load brought by repeated invocation of the SI model during the process of Monte Carlo simulation, a surrogate model based on a multi-gene genetic programming (MGGP) method was developed to replace the SI simulation model for calculation. A comparison between the MGGP surrogate model and the Kriging surrogate model was carried out, and the results show that the MGGP surrogate model has a distinct advantage over the Kriging surrogate model in approximating the excitation-response relationship of the variable-density groundwater simulation model. Through statistical analysis of Monte Carlo simulation results, an object and reasonable risk assessment of SI for the study area was obtained. This study suggests that it is essential to take the uncertainty of precipitation and SLR into account when modeling and predicting the extent of SI.

In the evaluation of aquatic environments in estuarine waters, the groundwater-surface water exchanges and associated metal fluxes are difficult to quantify and often ignored. This study made such an attempt based on field data at two intertidal transects in the estuarine wetland of Dan'ao River, the largest river flowing into Daya Bay, China. The results of groundwater-surface water exchange associated six common metals (Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, and Cr) indicate the following: the cumulative concentrations of the six metals are ranked as seawater > groundwater > river water. Among all estuarine groundwaters, the sum of metal concentrations in rhizospheric groundwater at the upstream transect is the highest, owing to the enriching effects of mangrove rhizospheres on metals. The net fluxes of Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Cr at the upstream transect are 4.8-13.8, 11.9-16.7, 147.8-190.2, 4.1-4.9, and 10.0-12.6 times higher than those at the downstream one. The much higher groundwater discharge rates at the upstream mangrove transect plays a vital role in increasing metal fluxes from groundwater to surface water in this estuary.

The remediation of groundwater subject to in situ leaching (ISL) for uranium mining has raised extensive concerns in uranium mill and milling. This study conducted bioremediation through biostimulation and bioaugmentation to the groundwater in an area in northern China that was contaminated due to uranium mining using the CO2 + O2 neutral ISL (NISL) technology. It identified the dominant controlling factors and mechanisms driving bioremediation. Findings indicate that microorganisms can reduce the uranium concentration in groundwater subject to NISL uranium mining to its normal level. After 120 days of bioaugmentation, the uranium concentration in the contaminated groundwater fell to 0.36 mg/L, achieving a remediation efficiency of 91.26 %. Compared with biostimulation, bioaugmentation shortened the remediation timeframe by 30 to 60 days while maintaining roughly the same remediation efficiency. Groundwater in karst regions is of immense value due to its vital support for regional ecosystems and residents' livelihoods. However, it is simultaneously threatened by multi-source pollution from agricultural non-point sources, industrial and domestic point sources, and mining activities. This study focuses on the Guangxi of China, which features typical karst topography, aiming to thoroughly assess the groundwater quality and related health risks in Guangxi, especially identifying the impacts of various key pollution sources on the groundwater environment. A total of 1912 groundwater samples were collected, covering an area of approximately 237,600 km 2 . The spatial distribution of pollutants was analysed using the Nemeroww index method and Kriging interpolation, while multivariate statistical and cluster analysis methods were employed to identify the main types of pollution sources. Furthermore, based on the human health risk assessment model of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), a risk assessment was conducted for key pollutants. The results revealed widespread heavy metal contamination in Guangxi's groundwater, particularly with concentrations of Mn, As, Al, Pb reaching up to 9.4 mg/L, 2.483 mg/L, 37.95 mg/L, 4.761 mg/L, respectively, significantly exceeding China's national Class III groundwater quality standards. Cluster analysis indicated that mining and industrial activities are the primary sources of pollution. The health risk assessment demonstrated that these activities pose a significant risk to public health. The aim of this study is to provide a scientific basis for the protection of the groundwater environment in Guangxi and other karst areas, the formulation of pollution prevention and control strategies, and the optimization of urban and industrial land use layouts. Groundwater is an essential source of drinking water and agricultural irrigation water, and its protection has become a global goal for public health. However, knowledge about heavy metal(loid) resistance genes (MRGs) in groundwater and the potential co-selection of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have seldom been developed. Here, during the wet and dry seasons, we collected 66 groundwater samples (total dissolved solids = 93.9-9530 mg/L) adjacent to Baiyangdian Lake in Northern China, which presented the few metal(loid) and antibiotic contamination. We identified 160 MRGs whose composition exhibited significant seasonal variation, and dissolved metal(loid)s (particularly Ba) played a determinative role in promoting the MRGs proliferation though with relatively low concentrations, suggesting the relatively vulnerable groundwater ecosystems. Moreover, 27.4% of MRG-carrying metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) simultaneously carried ARGs, with the most frequently detected MRG types of Cu, Hg, and As, and ARG types of multidrug and bacitracin. Physicochemical variables, variables related to total dissolved solids, metal(loid)s, and antibiotics synthetically shaped the variation of MRG-ARG hosts in groundwater. We found that the increase of MRG-ARG hosts was critically responsible for the spread of MRGs and ARGs in groundwater. There is a large surface-groundwater exchange downstream of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and antibiotics upstream may influence sites downstream of rivers. Thus, samples from 9 effluent-receiving urban rivers (ERURs) and 12 groundwater sites were collected in Shijiazhuang City in December 2020 and April 2021. For ERURs, 8 out of 13 target quinolone antibiotics (QNs) were detected, and the total concentration of QNs in December and April were 100.6-4,398 ng/L and 8.02-2,476 ng/L, respectively. For groundwater, all target QNs were detected, and the total QNs concentration was 1.09-23.03 ng/L for December and 4.54-170.3 ng/L for April. The distribution of QNs was dissimilar between ERURs and groundwater. Most QN concentrations were weakly correlated with land use types in the system. The results of a positive matrix factorization model (PMF) indicated four potential sources of QNs in both ERURs and groundwater, and WWTP effluents were the main source of QNs. From December to April, the contribution of WWTP effluents and agricultural emissions increased, while livestock activities decreased. Singular value decomposition (SVD) results showed that the spatial variation of most QNs was mainly contributed by sites downstream (7.09%-88.86%) of ERURs. Then, a new method that combined the results of SVD and PMF was developed for a specific-source-site risk quotient (SRQ), and the SRQ for QNs was at high level, especially for the sites downstream of WWTPs. Regarding temporal variation, the SRQ for WWTP effluents, aquaculture, and agricultural emissions increased. To explore the characteristics and evaluate the risk of heavy metals in groundwater at a typical smelter-contaminated site, this study focuses on a representative a historical arsenic smelting plant in Southwest China, where the primary historical products were metallic arsenic (∼1000 tons/year) and arsenic trioxide (∼2000 ton/year). The results demonstrated As and Pb as the main pollutants in soil, and As and Cd as main pollutants in groundwater through soil profiling and quarterly groundwater analysis. The maximum As and Pb in the surface soil were 76800 and 2290 mg/kg, respectively, with As vertically infiltrating the deep gravel-sand layer (18-20 m). The groundwater pollution distribution progressively increased along flow direction, influenced by seasonal surface runoff and infiltration fluctuations. The groundwater pollutant concentrations during the dry season notably surpassed those during the wet season, with maximum As and Cd concentrations of 111.64 mg/L and 19.85 μg/L during the dry season, respectively. Furthermore, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was applied to evaluate the comprehensive risk of contaminated-site across pollution source load, regional groundwater intrinsic vulnerability, and evaluation of nearby sensitive receptors. The results revealed that the carcinogenic risk of lead in surface soil was moderate to high, while arsenic posed a high carcinogenic risk, contributing to an overall carcinogenic risk proportion of 89.6% in surface soil. Exposure through groundwater intake was identified as the primary pathway, with carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks exceeding those through skin contact. The final weights result demonstrated that the principal risk factors are the intrinsic arsenic load and protective target characteristics of regional groundwater at this site. Although enhancing the knowledge of nitrogen (N) dynamics in aquatic systems is crucial for basin N management, there is still a lack of theories on the patterns of basin N sources and transport because of the intricate influence of human activities, climatic conditions, landscape patterns, and topography on the trajectory of basin N. To shed new light on the patterns of basin N sources and transport in the Chinese subtropical monsoon region, this study provides a comprehensive approach combining multiple isotopes and hydrological model based on monthly records of hydro-chemistry and isotopes ( 18 O-NO 3 - / 15 N-NO-3 and 18 O-H 2 O / 2 O) for river water, groundwater and rainfall in three basins over multiple years. Our observations of hydro-chemistry showed that fluvial N levels in highly urbanized basins (3.05 ± 1.42 mg·L 2 O) for river water, groundwater and rainfall in three basins over multiple years. River and atmosphere are traditionally recognized as the primary nutrient sources impacting coastal ecosystems. Despite the increasing attention towards the often-neglected submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), its understanding and significance in highly human-impacted marginal seas remain limited. This study utilizes unprecedented high-resolution data (561 seawater and 282 groundwater radium samples) to provide precise estimates of 226 Ra and 228 Ra sources and sinks in the Eastern China Marginal Seas. A coupled 226 Ra and 228 Ra mass balance model enable an integrated SGD flux of (3.7 ± 2.4) × 10 12 m 3 yr -1 , surpassing rivers by 3.4 times. Furthermore, nutrient delivery from SGD exceeds riverine and atmospheric inputs, potentially inducing substantial changes in coastal nutrient cycles. These alterations have profound implications for primary production and biological communities, deviating significantly from the Redfield ratio. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Four-step-Method (FSM) is a straightforward and extensively utilized tool for evaluating regional health risks, However, the complex and heterogeneous groundwater environment system causes great uncertainty in the assessment process. Triangular stochastic simulation (TSS) possesses certain advantages in solving uncertainty problems, but its inadequacy with discrete data reveals limitations in this aspect. To solve the above problems, this study proposes to construct trapezoidal fuzzy number-Monte Carlo stochastic simulation (TFN-MCSS) to compensate for the shortcomings of the first two methods. This method adopted trapezoidal fuzzy number (TFN) analysis to comprehensively consider the characteristics of a large dispersion of water quality monitoring data and the uncertainty of the human health risk assessment (HHRA) process. Concurrently, to overcome the subjectivity and uncertainty of artificially determining the interval of TFN in traditional methods, the slope was used to select the most probable interval value (TMPIV) of TFN combined with the α-truncated set technique (α-TST) and MCSS. Based on these, a TFN-MCSS was constructed and applied to groundwater HHRA in western Jilin Province. First, the groundwater chemical characteristic determination and water quality evaluation in western Jilin were performed to identify the main pollution indicators, and the health risk effects of pollutants in groundwater of different aquifers at different time periods on adults and children were evaluated using the TFN-MCSS. The uncertainty and sensitivity were analyzed, and the primary risk control indicators were identified and compared to FSM and TSS. The results reveal that TFN-MCSS was more sensitive to data and could reduce the uncertainty of assessment process. It indicated that over a 10-year period, the health risks associated with unconfined groundwater (UW) and confined water (CW) decreased by greater than 52 %. Ecosystem services are fundamental to human survival on Earth, but studies on ecosystem service value of groundwater (ESV-G) are rare. The multiscale characteristics and influencing factors of ESV-G in China from 2000 to 2020 were analyzed in this study. The results showed that ESV-G decreased first and then increased, the average ESV-G was 130.30 thousand yuan/km 2 , and ESV-G tended to shift towards middle level (second to fourth class). The Hu Line was the dividing line between the first class (more than half area) and the others. The AI and FRAC values indicated that the patches of ESV-G were more concentrated, with simpler shapes that were more amenable to governance at the province scale. Hot spots and cold spots were mainly located in the eastern and western parts of Hu Line, respectively. The ESV-G of the cold spots per unit area at the province scale was higher than that at the city scale, which indicated that the province scale had the potential for higher ESV-G per unit area and cost advantage. Precipitation and temperature were the main factors affecting ESV-G; the influence of human activities on ESV-G increased on a larger scale as time went by. Combination of precipitation and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) had the greatest influence on ESV-G among the combinational influencing factors. The province scale was the optimal scale to manage ESV-G. Climate change had led to the expansion of hot and cold spots of ESV-G, northern and southern areas should combine existing policies to carry out differentiated governance. A substantial reservoir of nitrogen (N) in soil poses a threat to the quality and safety of shallow groundwater, especially under extreme precipitation that hastens nitrogen leaching into groundwater. However, the specific impact of varying precipitation intensities on the concentration and sources of nitrate (NO 3 ) in groundwater across diverse hydrogeological zones and land uses remains unclear. This study aims to elucidate the fluctuations in NO - concentration, sources, and controlling factors in shallow groundwater under different intensities of precipitation (extreme heavy precipitation and continuous heavy precipitation) in a typical alluvial-pluvial fan of the North China Plain by using stable isotopes (δ 3 - concentration, sources, and controlling factors in shallow groundwater under different intensities of precipitation (extreme heavy precipitation and continuous heavy precipitation) in a typical alluvial-pluvial fan of the North China Plain by using stable isotopes (δ 2 H-H 2 O, δ 18 O-H 2 O, δ 15 N-NO 3 - , δ 18 O-NO 3 - O in groundwater of the entire area suggested the rapid recharge of fast flow by precipitation. Heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) pollution has become a common and complex problem in industrial parks due to rapid industrialization and urbanization. Here, soil and groundwater were sampled from a retired industrial park to investigate the pollution characteristics of HMs. Results show that Ni, Pb, Cr, Zn, Cd, and Cu were the typical HMs in the soil. Source analysis with the positive matrix factorization model indicates that HMs in the topsoil stemmed from industrial activities, traffic emission, and natural source, and the groundwater HMs originated from industrial activities, groundwater-soil interaction, groundwater-rock interaction, and atmosphere deposition. The sequential extraction of soil HMs reveals that As and Hg were mainly distributed in the residue fraction, while Ni, Pb, Cr, Zn, Cd, and Cu mainly existed in the mobile fraction. Most HMs either in the total concentration or in the bioavailable fraction preferred to retain in soil as indicated by their high soil-water partitioning coefficients (K d ), and the K d values were correlated with soil pH, groundwater redox potential, and dissolved oxygen. The relative stable soil-groundwater circumstance and the low active fraction contents limited the vertical migration of soil HMs and their release to groundwater. The biological carbon pump in karst areas is of great significance for maintaining the effectiveness of karst carbon sinks. However, the spatial distribution and carbon-fixing potential of microorganisms in different aquifers within karst areas remain poorly understood. In this study, the distribution patterns, ecological roles, and environmental drivers of microbiota associated with CO 2 fixation were investigated in karst groundwater (KW), porous groundwater (PW), fractured groundwater (FW), and surface water (SW) within a typical karst watershed, located in Guilin, southwest China. KW, PW, and FW displayed the similar community structure and indicative carbon-fixing bacteria composition, which were dominated by chemoautotrophic bacteria compared to SW. Higher abundances of indicative carbon-fixing bacteria and carbon-fixing genes, as well as richer proportions of microbial-derived DOC, indicated the more significant microbial carbon-fixing potential in KW and PW. At the profile of KW, a carbon-fixing hotspot was discovered at the depths of 0-50 m. Correlation analysis between carbon-fixing bacteria and DOC revealed that the chemoautotrophic process driven by nitrogen and sulfur oxidation predominated the microbial carbon fixation in groundwater. Co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated that carbon-fixing bacteria exhibited cooperation with other bacterial taxa in KW, while competition was the dominant interaction in PW. Moreover, carbon-fixing bacteria was found to lead bacterial assembly more deterministic in KW. The analysis of environmental factors and microbial diversity illustrated that inorganic carbon and redox state drove community variations across groundwaters. Structural equation model (SEM) further confirmed that ORP was the primary factor influencing the carbon fixation potential. The imperative to preserve environmental resources has transcended traditional conservation efforts, becoming a crucial element for sustaining life. Our deep interconnectedness with the natural environment, which directly impacts our well-being, emphasizes this urgency. Contaminants such as leachate from landfills are increasingly threatening groundwater, a vital resource that provides drinking water for nearly half of the global population. This critical environmental threat requires advanced detection and monitoring solutions to effectively safeguard our groundwater resources. To address this pressing need, we introduce the Multifaceted Anomaly Detection Framework (MADF), which integrates Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) with advanced machine learning models-Isolation Forest (IF), One-Class Support Vector Machines (OC-SVM), and Local Outlier Factor (LOF). MADF processes and analyzes ERT data, employing these hybrid machine learning models to identify and quantify anomaly signals accurately via the majority vote strategy. Applied to the Chaling landfill site in Zhuzhou, China, MADF demonstrated significant improvements in detection capability. The framework enhanced the precision of anomaly detection, evidenced by higher Youden Index values (≈ 6.216%), with a 30% increase in sensitivity and a 25% reduction in false positives compared to traditional ERT inversion methods. Indeed, these enhancements are crucial for effective environmental monitoring, where the cost of missing a leak could be catastrophic, and for reducing unnecessary interventions that can be resource-intensive. The emergence of large-scale time-series data and advancements in computational power have opened new avenues for analyzing the spatiotemporal evolution of groundwater chemistry, water quality, and human health risks. This paper utilizes hydrogeochemical methods to elucidate the controlling factors of water chemical components based on the test results of 124 groundwater samples collected from 31 monitoring wells in Fuxin City, Liaoning Province, China, from 2018 to 2021. By integrating the Random Forest and Enhanced Water Quality Index methods for water quality assessment and employing the Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) model to analyze human health risks, our findings indicate that the groundwater is mildly alkaline, with SO 4 ·Cl-Ca·Mg and HCO 3 -Ca·Mg as the dominant hydrochemical types, primarily derived from the dissolution of carbonate and silicate minerals such as dolomite, limestone, and andesite, and cation exchange reactions. The EI_RF water quality evaluation model reveals that the overall water quality in the study area is poor, with Class I and II water quality zones mainly located in the northeastern and central parts of the study area, showing a gradual transition from Class I and II in the northeast to Classes IV and V in the southwest, significantly influenced by NO 3 - . High levels of Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) in soils may contribute to secondary contamination of groundwater. However, there is limited understanding of the cycling mechanisms of Fe and Mn in groundwater and soil. This study aimed to investigate the biogeochemical processes constituting the Fe and Mn cycle by combining hydrochemistry, sequential extraction and microbiological techniques. The results indicated a similar vertical distribution pattern of Fe and Mn, with lower levels of the effective form (EFC-Fe/Mn) observed at the oxygenated surface, increasing near the groundwater table and decreasing below it. Generally, there was a tendency for accumulation above the water table, with Mn exhibiting a higher release potential compared to Fe. Iron‑manganese oxides (Ox-Fe/Mn) dominated the effective forms, with Fe and Mn in the soil entering groundwater through the reduction dissolution of Ox-Fe/Mn and the oxidative degradation of organic matter or sulfide (OM-Fe/Mn). Correlation analysis revealed that Fe and Mn tend to accumulate in media with fine particles and high organic carbon (TOC) contents. 16S rRNA sequencing analysis disclosed significant variation in the abundance of microorganisms associated with Fe and Mn transformations among unsaturated zone soils, saturated zone media and groundwater, with Fe/Mn content exerting an influence on microbial communities. Furthermore, functional bacterial identification results from the FAPROTAX database show a higher abundance of iron-oxidizing bacteria (9.3 %) in groundwater, while iron and manganese-reducing bacteria are scarce in both groundwater and soil environments. Finally, a conceptual model of Fe and Mn cycling was constructed, elucidating the biogeochemical processes in groundwater and soil environments. Metals/metalloids, being ubiquitous in the environment, can function as a co-selective pressure on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) threatening human health. However, the effect of geogenic arsenic (As) on groundwater antibiotic resistomes and their health risks remain largely unknown. Here, we systematically analyzed bacterial communities, pathogenic bacteria, antibiotic resistomes, and in-situ multidrug-resistant isolates with the assessment of the health risk of ARGs and the pathogenicity of their hosts in high As groundwater from the Hetao basin, Northwestern China. We found that long-term geogenic As exposure shifted the assembly of resistomes and resulted in a high abundance and diversity of ARGs in groundwater. Significantly positive associations among As, As cycling genes, ARGs, and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) revealed by network and pathway analyses, together with genetic evidence of As-tolerant multidrug-resistant isolates by whole genomic sequencing, robustly indicate the geogenic As-induced co-selection for antibiotic resistance in groundwater. Variance partitioning analysis further confirmed the determinative role of geogenic As in groundwater resistomes, with As species and As cycling genes as the core abiotic and biotic drivers, respectively. More seriously, geogenic As accelerated the prevalence of high-risk ARGs and multidrug-resistant bacteria. Our findings highlight the significance of geogenic As-induced co-selection for antibiotic resistance in groundwater and the hidden role of geogenic metals/metalloids in increasing antibiotic resistance. North China type coalfield are gradually mining deep, and the mixing of groundwater is intensified. Hydrogen and oxygen isotopes are important elements for tracing groundwater movement. The fractionation response mechanism under mining conditions is not clear. In this paper, combined with numerical simulation, MixSIAR isotope mixing model and other methods, according to the δD, δ 18 O and hydrochemical information of various water bodies, the impact of coal mining on hydrogen and oxygen isotope fractionation is analyzed from multiple perspectives. The results show that summer soil water is the main source of recharge for limestone water, accounting for 30.7%-41.5%, and the Zhan River is the main source of recharge for limestone water. Before groundwater recharge, evaporation leads to the increase of δ 18 O in surface water by 0.31‰-5.58‰, water loss by 1.81%-28.00%, the increase of δ 18 O in soil water by 0.47‰-6.33‰, and water loss by 2.74%-35.80%. Compared with the coal mining layer, the degree of hydrogen and oxygen isotope drift and water-rock interaction in the coal mine stopping layer are significantly improved. The results of numerical simulation show that the pumping activity reduces the 18 O concentration in the mining layer. The ion ratio is used as a new variable to eliminate the influence of water-rock interaction when calculating the mixing ratio. The results show that the limestone water is in a state of receiving external recharge, and mixing effect increases the δ 18 O in limestone water by 0.86‰ on average, and the δD increases by 0.72‰ on average. Government intervention has become an important measure to restrain groundwater overexploitation. This paper analyzes the effect of three types of government intervention measures, namely, guidance, incentive and constraint, on farmers' groundwater utilization behavior, from the perspective of scale-heterogeneity, using general quantile regression model, by survey data of 1122 households in well irrigation area of north China. The results showed that: (1) the incentive and guiding measures have negative effects on farmers' groundwater usage, while the effect of restrictive measures is not obvious. The guided policy is superior to the incentive measure as to governance effect. (2) With the increase of farmers' land scale, the influence of incentive measures shows a trend of weakening, and the effect of guided measures on groundwater demand reduction of farmers is stronger. When it comes to the different point of water consumption, when at the point level of 0.25, the incentive measures have the most obvious inhibitory effect. With the increase of water consumption of farmers, the guided measures begin to play a core role. The effect of restrictive measures is not obvious with the increase of water consumption. It is challenging to interpret hydrogeochemical datasets with complex natural and anthropogenic genesis in intensive industrial areas. This paper elucidates the hydrogeochemical characteristics and pollution sources of groundwater in an industrial park, East China, combining the self-organizing map (SOM), hydrochemical graphs, and correlation analysis. The results show that the total dissolved solids of groundwater range from 73.45 to 997.92 mg/L and can be regarded as freshwater. The pH varies greatly from 6.44 to 9.90, most of samples belonging to weakly acidic-weakly alkaline. The groundwater can be classified into five clusters by SOM, representing the non- or least-polluted groundwater (cluster D), high salt groundwater (cluster A), high NH 4 + groundwater (cluster B), high Fe and Mn groundwater (cluster C), and high pH groundwater (cluster E), which were contaminated by industrial salts, historical agriculture activity, industrial reducing substances, and industrial alkali, respectively. The natural evolution of groundwater (cluster D) in the study area is mainly controlled by mineral weathering/dissolution. The contributions of calcite, dolomite, gypsum, halite, and silicate mineral to groundwater solute are 55.8-66.3%, 15.1-18.0%, 9.0-10.7%, 2.5-10.1%, and 2.3-9.4%, respectively, based on the mass conservation. The contaminated groundwaters (all other clusters except for cluster D) have different hydrochemical characteristics associated with the pollution sources. In addition, the relatively reductive environment in quaternary flu-lacustrine sediments favored the formation of high level of Fe, Mn, and NH 3 -N in groundwater. This study provides a new insight into the characteristic contaminants and their distributions in groundwater and the associated pollution sources based on the large datasets in an intensive industrial area. Situated in the north of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Qaidam Basin experiences limited precipitation and significant evaporation. Despite these conditions, it stands out as one of the most densely distributed lakes in China. The formation of these lakes is controversial: whether the lake water primarily originates from local precipitation or external water sources. To address this issue, this paper explores the recharge sources of lakes in the Qaidam Basin and the circulation patterns of groundwater from a remote sensing perspective. Based on deep learning networks, we optimized the soft object regions of the Object-Contextual Representations Network (OCRNet) and proposed the Remote·Sensing Adaptive-Improved OCRNet (RSA-IOCRNet). Compared with seven other networks, RSA-IOCRNet obtained better experimental results and was used to construct an area sequence of 16 major lakes in the Qaidam Basin. Combined with multi-source data, the comprehensive analysis indicates no significant correlation between climatic factors and lake changes, while an obvious correlation between lakes and groundwater changes in the eastern Qaidam, consisting with the results of the field survey. Deep-circulating groundwater recharges numerous Qaidam lakes through upwelling from fault zones, such as Gasikule Lake and Xiaochaidan Lake. Groundwater in the Qaidam Basin is more depleted in hydrogen-oxygen isotope characteristics than surface water in the basin, but similar to some river water in the endorheic Tibetan Plateau. This indicates that Tibetan seepage water, estimated at approximately 540 billion m 3 /a, is transported through the Qaidam Basin via deep circulation. Moreover, it rises to recharge the groundwater and lakes within this basin through fracture zones, extending to various arid and semi-arid regions such as Taitema Lake. In North China, iodine-rich groundwater has been extensively studied, but few in South China. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of iodine-rich groundwater in South China and identify potential contamination sources. The results revealed that the average concentration of iodine in groundwater was 890 µg/L, with a maximum concentration of 6350 µg/L, exceeding the permitted levels recommended by the World Health Organization (5-300 µg/L). Notably, the enrichment of iodide occurred in acidic conditions (pH = 6.6) and a relatively low Eh environment (Eh = 198.4 mV). Pearson correlation and cluster analyses suggested that the enrichment of iodide could be attributed to the intensified redox process involving Mn(II), iodine (I 2 ), or iodate (IO 3 - ) in the soil. The strong affinity between Mn(II) and I 2 /IO 3 from the soil to the groundwater. Leaching experiments further confirmed that reducing substances (such as sodium sulfides, ascorbic acids, and fulvic acids) in the soil with low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels (< 1.0 mg/L) enhanced the dissolution of iodine species. Conversely, higher DO content (> 3.8 mg/L) promoted the oxidation of I - facilitated their interaction, resulting in the formation and mobilization of I - from the soil to the groundwater. Leaching experiments further confirmed that reducing substances (such as sodium sulfides, ascorbic acids, and fulvic acids) in the soil with low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels (< 1.0 mg/L) enhanced the dissolution of iodine species. Identifying streamwater-groundwater interactions (SGI) is crucial for effective water resource management, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Despite the effectiveness of tracers in detecting these interactions, their large-scale application is challenged by the variability in tracer characteristics and natural conditions. This study addresses these challenges through extensive research across seven watersheds (7636-60,916 km 2 ) in China's Loess Plateau (CLP). We utilized multiple physicochemical and stable isotope tracers (δ 2 H and δ 18 O) to elucidate the spatiotemporal variations and controlling factors of SGI, and to estimate uncertainties in quantifying SGI using various indicators during unidirectional water exchange periods. Our findings indicated that groundwater discharge into streamwater dominates SGI in the CLP, with mean discharge ratios (the percentage of river flow that originates from groundwater discharge) varying from 10% to 57%. Significant spatial variability was observed both across and within watersheds. The central watersheds exhibited lower discharge ratios (23 ± 11%) compared to the northern (29 ± 12%) and southern (25 ± 13%) watersheds. The upper reaches showed higher discharge ratios (28 ± 12%) compared to the middle and lower reaches (22 ± 8%). Loess thickness and vegetation primarily limit groundwater discharge by affecting groundwater storage and water flow velocity. The utilization of individual isotopic or hydrochemical indicators introduces large uncertainties in quantifying groundwater discharge ratios due to isotope fractionation or water-rock interaction, while the combination of these two indicators can reduce uncertainties in quantifying SGI. The continuous excessive application of phosphorus (P) fertilizers in intensive agricultural production leads to a large accumulation of P in surface soils, increasing the risk of soil P loss by runoff and leaching. However, there are few studies on the accumulation and loss of P from surface soil to deep soil profiles driven by shallow groundwater table (SGT) fluctuations. This study used the intensive cropland around 7 plateau lakes in Yunnan Province as an example and conducted in situ monitoring of P storage in the soil profile and SGT during the rainy season (RS) and dry season (DS) as well as simulation experiments on soil P loss. The aim was to study the spatiotemporal variation in P accumulation in the soil profile of cropland driven by SGT fluctuations in the RS and DS and estimate the P loss in the soil profile driven by SGT fluctuations. The results showed that fluctuations in the SGT promoted P accumulation from the surface soil to deeper soil. The proportions of P stored in various forms in the 30-60 cm and 60-100 cm soil layers in the RS were greater than those in the DS, while the average proportion in the 0-30 cm soil layer in the DS was as high as 48%. Compared with those in the DS, the maximum decreases in the proportion of P stored as TP and Olsen-P in the 0-100 cm soil layer in the RS were 16% and 58%, respectively, due to the rise in the SGT (SGT <30 cm), while the soil TP storage decreased by only 1% when the SGT was maintained at 60-100 cm. The critical thresholds for soil Olsen-P and TP gradually decreased with increasing soil depth, and the risk of P loss in deeper soil increased. The loss of soil P was increased by fluctuations in the SGT. Based on the cropland area around the 7 plateau lakes, P storage, and SGT fluctuations, the average loss intensity and loss amount of TP in the 0-100 cm soil layer around the 7 plateau lakes were estimated to be 25 kg/ha and 56 t, respectively. Chronic exposure to elevated geogenic arsenic (As) and fluoride (F - ) concentrations in groundwater poses a significant global health risk. In regions around the world where regular groundwater quality assessments are limited, the presence of harmful levels of As and F - in shallow groundwater extracted from specific wells remains uncertain. This study utilized an enhanced stacking ensemble learning model to predict the distributions of As and F - in shallow groundwater based on 4,393 available datasets of observed concentrations and forty relevant environmental factors. The enhanced model was obtained by fusing well-suited Extreme Gradient Boosting, Random Forest, and Support Vector Machine as the base learners and a structurally simple Linear Discriminant Analysis as the meta-learner. The model precisely captured the patchy distributions of groundwater As and F - with an AUC value of 0.836 and 0.853, respectively. The findings revealed that 9.0% of the study area was characterized by a high As risk in shallow groundwater, while 21.2% was at high F - risk identified as having a high risk of fluoride contamination. About 0.2% of the study area shows elevated levels of both of them. The affected populations are estimated at approximately 7.61 million, 34.1 million, and 0.2 million, respectively. Furthermore, sedimentary environment exerted the greatest influence on distribution of groundwater As, with human activities and climate following closely behind at 29.5%, 28.1%, and 21.9%, respectively. Likewise, sedimentary environment was the primary factor affecting groundwater F - distribution, followed by hydrogeology and soil physicochemical properties, contributing 27.8%, 24.0%, and 23.3%, respectively. Polybromodiphenyl ethers (PBDEs), the widely used flame retardants, are common contaminants in surface soils at e-waste recycling sites. The association of PBDEs with soil colloids has been observed, indicating the potential risk to groundwater due to colloid-facilitated transport. However, the extent to which soil colloids may enhance the spreading of PBDEs in groundwater is largely unknown. Herein, we report the co-transport of decabromodiphenyl ester (BDE-209) and soil colloids in saturated porous media. The colloids released from a soil sample collected at an e-waste recycling site in Tianjin, China, contain high concentration of PBDEs, with BDE-209 being the most abundant conger (320 ± 30 mg/kg). The colloids exhibit relatively high mobility in saturated sand columns, under conditions commonly observed in groundwater environments. Notably, under all the tested conditions (i.e., varying flow velocity, pH, ionic species and ionic strength), the mass of eluted BDE-209 correlates linearly with that of eluted soil colloids, even though the mobility of the colloids varies markedly depending on the specific hydrodynamic and solution chemistry conditions involved. Additionally, the mass of BDE-209 retained in the columns also correlates strongly with the mass of retained colloids. Apparently, the PBDEs remain bound to soil colloids during transport in porous media. Findings in this study indicate that soil colloids may significantly promote the transport of PBDEs in groundwater by serving as an effective carrier. Groundwater pollution has attracted widespread attention as a threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems. However, the mechanisms of pollutant enrichment and migration are unclear, and the spatiotemporal distributions of human health risks are poorly understood, indicating insufficient groundwater management and monitoring. This study assessed groundwater quality, human health risks, and pollutant sources in the Fen River Basin(FRB). Groundwater quality in the FRB is good, with approximately 87 % of groundwater samples rated as "excellent" or "good" in both the dry and rainy seasons. Significant precipitation elevates groundwater levels, making it more susceptible to human activities during the rainy season, slightly deteriorating water quality. Some sampling points in the southern of Taiyuan Basin are severely contaminated by mine drainage, with water quality index values up to 533.80, over twice the limit. Human health risks are mainly from As, F, NO 3 - , and Cr. Drinking water is the primary pathway of risk. From 2019 to 2020, the average non-carcinogenic risk of As, F, and NO 3 and Cr are significantly influenced by human activities. Various natural factors, such as hydrogeochemical conditions and aquifer environments, and processes like evaporation, cation exchange, and nitrification/denitrification, affect pollutant concentrations. A multi-tracer approach, integrating hydrochemical and isotopic tracers, was employed to identify the groundwater pollution in the FRB, and the response of groundwater environment to pollutant enrichment. The environmental changes from climatic, terrestrial and anthropogenic drivers can significantly influence the groundwater quality that may pose a threat to human health. However, the driving mechanism of groundwater quality and potential health risk still remains to be studied. In this paper, 165 groundwater samples were analyzed to evaluate the groundwater quality, driving mechanism, and probabilistic health risk in the central Yinchuan Plain by applying fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method (FCEM), redundance analysis (RDA) and Monte Carlo simulation. The results showed that hydrochemical evolution of groundwater were strongly influenced by water-rock interaction, evaporation and human activities. While 55.2% of groundwater samples reached the drinking water quality standard (Class I, II and III), 44.8% of samples exceeded the standard limits of Class III water quality (Class IV and V), indicating a high pollution level of groundwater. Mn, TDS, NH 4 + , NO 3 - , As were among major indicators that influence the groundwater quality due to the natural and anthropogenic processes. The RDA analysis revealed that climatic factors (PE: 10.9%, PRE: 1.1%), GE chemical properties (ORP: 20.7%, DO: 2.4%), hydrogeological factors (BD: 16.5%, K: 4.1%), and terrestrial factors (elevation: 1.2%; distance - , NO 2 : 1.5%, NDVI: 1.2%) were identified as major driving factors influencing the groundwater quality in the study area. The HHRA suggested that TCR values of arsenic in infants, children and teens greatly exceeded the acceptable risk threshold of 1E-4, indicating a high cancer risk with a basic trend: infants > children > teens, while TCR values of adults were within the acceptable risk level. THI values of four age groups in the RME scenario were nearly ten times higher than those in the CTE scenario, displaying a great health effect on all age groups (HQ > 1). Groundwater contaminated by potentially toxic elements has become an increasing global concern for human health. Therefore, it is crucial to identify the sources and health risks of potentially toxic elements, especially in arid areas. Despite the necessity, there is a notable research gap concerning the sources and risks of these elements within multi-layer aquifers in such regions. To address this gap, 54 phreatic and 24 confined groundwater samples were collected from an arid area in Northwest China. This study aimed to trace the sources and evaluate the human health risks of potentially toxic elements by natural background level (NBL), positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, and health risk model. Findings revealed exceeding levels of potentially toxic elements existed in phreatic and confined aquifers. Source apportionment and NBL results indicated that mineral dissolution, evaporation, redox reactions, and human activities were the main factors for elevated concentrations of potentially toxic elements. High Fe and Mn concentrations were attributed to reduction environments, while F accumulation resulted from slow runoff, and irrigation from the Yellow River. Due to high F levels, more than one-third of groundwater samples (phreatic: 33.14 %, confined: 56.22 %) posed non-carcinogenic health risks to population groups. Adults displayed higher carcinogenic risks (phreatic: 19.47 %, confined: 34.16 %) than infants (phreatic: 0 %, confined: 0 %) and children (phreatic: 1.26 %, confined: 7.97 %) owing to the toxic elements of Cr. The confined aquifer presented greater health risks than the phreatic aquifer. Consequently, controlling the levels of F and Cr in multi-layered aquifers is key to reducing health risks. Accurately assessing the health risks posed by major contaminants is essential for protecting groundwater. However, the complexity of pollution sources and the uncertainty of parameters pose challenges for quantitative health risk assessment. In this study, a source-oriented groundwater risk evaluation process was improved by screening key pollutants, employing a combined hydrochemical and positive matrix factorization (PMF) approach for source apportionment, and incorporating two-dimensional Monte Carlo simulation for risk characterization. The application of this process to groundwater assessment in Central Jiangxi Province identified NO 3 - , F - , Se and Mn as the key pollutants. The pollution sources were anthropogenic activities, rock dissolution, regional geological processes, and ion exchange. Anthropogenic sources contributed 36.8 % and 28.8 % of the pollution during the wet season and dry season, respectively, and accounted for more than half of the health risks. NO 3 - from anthropogenic sources was the primary controlling pollutant. Additionally, the risk assessment indicated that children were at the highest health risk during the dry season, with ingestion rate suggested to be controlled below 1.062 L·day -1 to make the health risk within an acceptable range. Groundwater is a crucial water supply source in Chengdu City, western China, a region experiencing significant water scarcity. The sources of inorganic pollutants in groundwater and their potential health risks are of great concern. In this study, based on 156 groundwater samples collected in 2021 in the study area were analyzed for hydrochemical characterization and controlling factors. The Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model was used for contaminant source analysis, and Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) combined with the Health Risk Evaluation Model (HREM) was used to quantify the health risks. The results indicate that the groundwater in the study area is predominantly of the Ca·Na-SO 4 ·HCO 3 , Ca·Na-HCO 3 ·SO 4 and Ca-HCO 3 ·SO 4 types, mainly influenced by the combination of evaporation-concentration-crystallization and rock leaching-weathering. K + , Na + , and Cl - mainly originate from the weathering and dissolution of potassium feldspar and rock salt, while Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , HCO3 - , and SO 4 primarily come from the weathering and dissolution of sulfate minerals. The main sources of groundwater pollution and their contributions are as follows: domestic pollution (25.6 %), dissolution-filtration-evaporation-concentration action (22.8 %), hydrogeochemical evolution (15.8 %), water-rock interactions (12.8 %), primary geologic context (12.1 %), and agricultural non-point source pollution (11.0 %). Cl 2- and As are the primary contributors to non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks, respectively. Non-carcinogenic risks are below USEPA standards, while the average carcinogenic risk for arsenic exceeded the maximum acceptable risk level thresholds by 23 and 109 times for adults and children, respectively. Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks were mainly influenced by pollutant concentrations. The primary geological background and domestic pollution contributed the most to the non-carcinogenic risk for adults (50.3 %) and children (77.1 %), and 38.2 % and 10.3 %, respectively. Groundwater contamination near landfills is commonly caused by leachate leakage, and permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) are widely used for groundwater remediation. However, the deactivation and blockage of the reactive medium in PRBs limit their long-term effectiveness. In the current study, a new methodology was proposed for the in situ regeneration of PRB to remediate leachate-contaminated groundwater. CO 2 coupled with oxidants was applied for the dispersion and regeneration of the fillers; by injecting CO 2 to disperse the fillers, the permeability of the PRB was increased and the oxidants could flow evenly into the PRB. The results indicate that the optimum filler proportion was zero-valent iron (ZVI)/zeolites/activated carbon (AC) = 3:8:10 and the optimum oxidant proportion was COD/Na 2 S 2 O 8 /H 2 O 2 /Fe 2+ = 1:5:6:5; the oxidation system of Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 /S 2 O 8 has a high oxidation efficiency and persistence. The average regeneration rate of zeolites was 72.71%, and the average regeneration rate of AC was 68.40%; the permeability of PRB also increased. This technology is effective for the remediation of landfills in China that have large contaminated areas, an uneven pollutant concentration distribution, and a long pollution duration. The purification mode of long-term adsorption and short-time in situ oxidation can be applied to the remediation of long-term high-concentration organically polluted groundwater, where pollution sources are difficult to cut off.2- has a high oxidation efficiency and persistence. Herbicides (HBCs) are extensively used in modern agriculture. However, their potential negative impacts on environmental media have emerged as a significant environmental concern. In this study, we employed positive matrix factorization (PMF) to identify the potential sources of HBCs. Furthermore, we utilized a multi-matrix ecological risk model to assess the risks associated with HBCs in both surface water and groundwater in the black soil region of Northeast China. The findings revealed that the levels of ∑ 15 HBCs in surface water and groundwater ranged from 585.84 to 6466.96 ng/L and 4.80 to 11,774.64 ng/L, respectively. The PMF results indicated that surface runoff and erosion accounted for 50% of the total HBCs in water, serving as the primary sources. All tested HBCs exhibited acute risk values within acceptable levels. The risk index for the ∑ 15 HBCs was categorized as "moderate risk" in 31% of the surface waters and 13% of the groundwaters. However, 4% of the groundwater sampling sites reached the "high risk" level. The chronic risk quotient of ∑ 15 HBCs in surface water and groundwater was 92% and 62% at the "high risk" level, respectively. Interestingly, non-carcinogenic HBCs contributed more significantly to the ecotoxicology of the aquatic system than carcinogenic HBCs. This study provides comprehensive information on the legacy of HBCs in water bodies and emphasizes the potential risks posed by HBCs to aquatic systems.
