As a renewable aromatic compound with enormous production potential, lignin has various potential high-value utilization pathways, but the success achieved in the field of photocatalysis is limited. Herein, this work prepares a new type of photocatalyst by modifying Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanotubes (CNT) with self-assembled lignin nanospheres for the photocatalytic production of H 2 O 2 and the degradation of azo dyes. Under light conditions, lignin enhances the production of H 2 O 2 through oxygen reduction and collaborates with carbon nitride tubes to generate O 2 - and 1 O 2 . Furthermore, carbon nitride tubes form electron-rich regions with lignin, promoting the transfer of electrons from adsorbed aromatic pollutants to this region, thereby facilitating their degradation. The experimental results indicate that the addition of 5 % lignin significantly enhances the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of azo dyes, with a degradation rate 1.87 times higher than that of the original carbon nitride tubes. Furthermore, CNL also have excellent degradation ability to pollutants in actual wastewater. As a biomarker of oxidative stress, hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) plays a complex role in organisms, including regulating cell signaling, respiration, the immune system, and other life processes. Therefore, it is important to develop a tool that can simply and effectively monitor H 2 O 2 levels in organisms and the environment. In this work, naphthalene fluorophores with a borate structure were introduced into chitosan (CTS) azide, and a CTS-based fluorescence sensor (CTS-HP) was designed for sensitive H 2 O 2 detection. The biocompatibility and degradability of CTS endowed CTS-HP with reduced biotoxicity compared with organic fluorescent dyes, and the substitution degree of fluorophores on the CTS chains was 0.703. The randomly coiled chain structure of the CTS-HP probe enabled the boronic acid recognition sites on the fluorophores to achieve the enrichment of analyte H 2 O 2 through a synergistic effect. Therefore, the probe CTS-HP (10 μg mL -1 ) exhibited a 21-fold fluorescence enhancement and good detection limit (LOD = 8.98 nM) in H 2 O 2 solution, reaching the maximum fluorescence response faster (within 16 min). Advanced oxidation technologies based on hydroxyl radical (•OH) and sulfate radical (SO 4 -• ) are two common types of advanced oxidation technologies, but there are not many reports on the application of advanced oxidation methods in actual wastewater pretreatment. This article compares the pre-treatment performance of Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 and Fe 2+ /Persulfate systems in actual pharmaceutical wastewater, and combines EEM, GC-MS, and toxicity testing results to explore the differences in TOC, COD, and NH 3 -N removal rates, optimal catalyst dosage, applicable pH range, toxicity of effluent after reaction, and pollutant structure between the two systems. The results indicate that the Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 system has a higher pollutant removal rate (TOC: 71.9%, COD: 66.9%, NH 3 -N: 34.1%), but also requires a higher catalyst (Fe 2+ ) concentration (6.0 g/L), and its effluent exhibits characteristic peaks of aromatic proteins. The Fe 2+ /Persulfate system has a wider pH range (pH ≈ 3-7) and is more advantageous in treating wastewater containing more cyclic organic compounds, but the effluent contains some sulfur-containing compounds. In addition, toxicity tests have shown that the toxicity reduction effect of the Fe 2+ /Persulfate system is stronger than that of the Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 system.

In this work, the method of in-situ co-precipitation was used to prepare PVA/CNF/Fe 3 O 4 hybrid hydrogel, and the relationship between its structure and performance was explored. The Fe 3 O 4 NPs prepared by this method were dispersed on the carrier PVA/CNF hydrogel and were easy to recover. The catalytic degradation of tetracycline was investigated using PVA/CNF/Fe 3 O 4 hybrid hydrogel as photo-Fenton catalysts. The results showed that light and hydrogel carriers were pivotal factors in promoting Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ cycling and that the PVA/CNF/Fe 3 O 4 hybrid hydrogel as catalysts were able to activate H 2 O 2 to generate a large amount of oxygen radical •OH, resulting in efficient removal of tetracycline. Generally, the mechanical strength and stiffness of old corrugated cardboard (OCC) waste paper are decreased after multiple recycling procedures. Surface sizing starch, which is extensively used in the surface sizing of paper making, accumulates after dissolving from the fibers and is transformed into pollutant during the OCC re-pulping process. To overcome the pollution and reutilization problem of the waste starch during the recycling process of OCC paper, waste starch was ionized using hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to improve the mechanical properties of OCC paper during the reutilization. The results showed that the carboxyl group of waste starch increased with an increasing degree of ionization, resulting in enhanced copper ion adsorption capacity. Furthermore, the retention rate of the modified starch in the wet-end increased from 18.0% to 48.2%. The OCC paper presented the highest burst index and tensile strength of 8.94 kPa m 2 /g and 112.5 N m/g, respectively, when MS-2 was added. Carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogel coated Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles were prepared using a coprecipitation combining graft copolymerization method, and characterized by various techniques to study their structure-property relationships. The nanocomposite was used as a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst for Acid Red 73 degradation. The effects of several key parameters, solution pH, H 2 O 2 concentration, catalyst dosage, and temperature of the reaction medium on the pseudo-first-order kinetics of dye degradation was evaluated. The results showed that the nanocomposite catalyst were highly effective in activating H 2 O 2 to produce reactive radicals for dye degradation, achieving complete decomposition under optimal conditions of 300 min at 25 °C and pH 3.5 with 100 mM H 2 O 2 and 200 mg·L -1 catalyst. The complexing hydrogel-Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ were the key factors that speed up the redox cycling between Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ species, thus accelerate the fast degradation rate of target pollutants. Scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses revealed that Acid Red 73 was decomposed mainly by the attack of •OH radicals. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), having a high specific surface area and versatile surface chemistry, provide considerable potential to interact by various mechanisms with enzymes for nano-immobilization purposes. However, engineering chemically safe CNCs, suitable for edible administrations, presents a significant challenge. A reliable carboxylate form of H-CNCs was formed using H 2 O 2 oxidation of softwood pulp under mild thermal conditions. Negatively charged carboxyl groups (∼0.9 mmol g -1 ) played a key role in lysozyme immobilization via electrostatic interactions and covalent linkages, as evidenced by Fourier transform infrared and 13 C cross-polarization magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. Adsorption isotherms showed a high loading capacity of H-CNCs (∼240 mg g -1 ), and fitting the data to the Langmuir model confirmed monolayer coverage of lysozyme on their surface. Using a non-toxic coupling agent, 4-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-4-methylmorpholinium chloride, lysozyme-conjugated H-CNCs were developed with an immobilization yield of ∼65% and relative catalytic activity of ∼60%, similar to lysozyme adsorption on H-CNCs. These H-CNC-lysozyme nanohybrids, rationally processed via safe and green strategies, are specifically exploitable as catalytically active emulsifiers in food and pharmaceutical sectors.

A green and facile method was designed to isolate a type of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) with carboxylated surfaces from native cellulose materials. Because isolation and modification processes of cellulosic particles are generally performed separately using harmful chemicals and multiple steps, the one-pot approach employed in this work is interesting from both an economical and ecological point of view. The reaction is carried out by adding hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant and copper(II) sulfate as a catalyst in acidic medium under mild thermal conditions. The charge content of the carboxylated CNC is about 1.0 mmol g -1 , measured by a conductometric titration. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy also proved the presence of carboxyl groups on the CNC particles. Atomic force microscopy along with optical polarized microscopy readily showed a rod shape morphology for the cellulosic particles. An average length of 263 nm and width of 23 nm were estimated by transmission electron microscopy. Dynamic laser scattering on carboxylated CNC suspensions by adding salt confirmed that nanoparticles are electrostatically stable. Carboxylated CNCs were furthermore characterized by solid carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray spectroscopy.

Iron-copper bimetal supported on mesoporous γ-Al 2 O 3 with different Fe/Cu ratios was prepared via a modified evaporation-induced self-assembly method and employed to degrade 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) in a Fenton-like process. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction spectrum and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy results confirmed the co-doping of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Cu + /Cu 2+ into the lattice of γ-Al 2 O 3 through the bonds of AlOFe and AlOCu. With the iron and copper co-doped in γ-Al 2 O 3 , three-fold oxygen vacancies (V 0 ) could be achieved compared with that of non-metal catalysts, which was favorable for the reduction of iron and copper species. The 1Fe3Cu-γ-Al 2 O 3 with a Fe/Cu mass ratio of 1:3 exhibited the highest activity on Fenton-like degradation of 4-CP due to the synergistic effects of Fe and Cu by facilitating the electron transfer in the recycles of Cu + /Cu 2+ and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ based on the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and electro paramagnetic resonance analysis. The utilization efficiency of H 2 O 2 was as high as 86.0% when 4-CP almost disappeared (i.e., 99.7 percent of 0.78 mM 4-CP) at 240 min and pH 7.0, additionally, their dechlorination and TOC removal efficiencies were 92.0% and 81.6%, respectively. An efficient scheme was developed for the conversion of wheat straw (WS) into bioethanol, silica and lignin. WS was pre-extracted with 0.2 mol/L sodium hydroxide at 30 °C for 5 h to remove about 91% of initial silica. Subsequently, the alkaline-pretreated solids were subjected to alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) pretreatment with 40 mg hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 )/g biomass at 50 °C for 7 h to prepare highly digestible substrate. The results of enzymatic hydrolysis demonstrated that the sequential alkaline-AHP pretreated WS was efficiently hydrolyzed at 10% (w/v) solids loading using an enzyme dosage of 10 mg protein/g glucan. The total sugar conversion of 92.4% was achieved. Simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation (SSCF) was applied to produce ethanol from the two-stage pretreated substrate using Saccharomyces cerevisiae SR8u strain. Ethanol with concentration of 31.1 g/L was produced. In this study, a sequential Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 reaction and biological process was employed as a low-cost depth treatment method to remove recalcitrant compounds from coal-chemical engineering wastewater after regular biological treatment. First of all, a chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color removal efficiency of 66 and 63% was achieved at initial pH of 6.8, 25 mmol L -1 of H 2 O 2 , and 2 g L -1 of Fe 0 in the Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 reaction. According to the gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) analysis, the recalcitrant compounds were effectively decomposed into short-chain organic acids such as acetic, propionic, and butyric acids. Although these acids were resistant to the Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 reaction, they were effectively eliminated in the sequential air lift reactor (ALR) at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 2 h, resulting in a further decrease of COD and color from 120 to 51 mg L -1 and from 70 to 38 times, respectively. A low operational cost of 0.35 $ m -3 was achieved because pH adjustment and iron-containing sludge disposal could be avoided since a total COD and color removal efficiency of 85 and 79% could be achieved at an original pH of 6.8 by the above sequential process with a ferric ion concentration below 0.8 mg L -1 after the Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 reaction. It indicated that the above sequential process is a promising and cost-effective method for the depth treatment of coal-chemical engineering wastewaters to satisfy discharge requirements.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) forms stable complexes with toxic metals such as nickel due to its strong chelation. The electro-Fenton (EF) process using a cathode made from palladium (Pd), reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and carbon felt, fed with air, exhibited high activities and stability for the removal of 10 mg L(-1) EDTA-Ni solution. Pd/RGO catalyst was prepared by one-pot synthesis; the scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis indicated nanoparticles and RGO were well distributed on carbon felt, forming three dimensional architecture with both large macropores and a mesoporous structure. The cyclic voltammetric results showed that the presence of RGO in Pd/RGO/carbon felt significantly increased the current response of two-electron reduction of O2 (0.45 V). The key factors influencing the removal efficiency of EDTA-Ni, such as pH, current and Fe(2+) concentration, were investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the removal efficiency of EDTA-Ni reached 83.8% after 100 min EF treatment. Mechanism analysis indicated that the introduction of RGO in Pd/RGO/carbon felt significantly enhanced the electrocatalytic activities by inducing •OH in the EF process; direct H2O2 oxidation still accounted for a large amount of EDTA-Ni removal efficiency.

The presence of transition metals during the hydrogen peroxide bleaching of pulp results in the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, which decreases the bleaching efficiency. In this study, chitosans were used as peroxide stabilizer in the alkaline hydrogen peroxide bleaching of aspen chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP). The results showed that the brightness of the bleached CTMP increased 1.5% ISO by addition of 0.1% chitosan with 95% degree of deacetylation during peroxide bleaching. Transition metals in the form of ions or metal colloid particles, such as iron, copper and manganese, could be adsorbed by chitosans. Chitosans could inhibit the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by different transition metals under alkaline conditions. The ability of chitosans to inhibit peroxide decomposition depended on the type of transition metals, chitosan concentration and degree of deacetylation applied. In this study we investigated the technical feasibility of convert paper mill sludge into fuel ethanol. This involved the removal of mineral fillers by using either chemical pretreatment or mechanical fractionation to determine their effects on cellulose hydrolysis and fermentation to ethanol. In addition, we studied the effect of cationic polyelectrolyte (as accelerant) addition and hydrogen peroxide pretreatment on enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation. We present results showing that removing the fillers content (ash and calcium carbonate) from the paper mill sludge increases the enzymatic hydrolysis performance dramatically with higher cellulose conversion at faster rates. The addition of accelerant and hydrogen peroxide pretreatment further improved the hydrolysis yields by 16% and 25% (g glucose / g cellulose), respectively with the de-ashed sludge. The fermentation process of produced sugars achieved up to 95% of the maximum theoretical ethanol yield and higher ethanol productivities within 9h of fermentation., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes (LEDs) may be a viable option as a UV light source for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) utilizing photocatalysts or oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide. The effect of UV-LED duty cycle, expressed as the percentage of time the LED is powered, was investigated in an AOP with hydrogen peroxide, using methylene blue (MB) to assess contaminant degradation. The UV-LED AOP degraded the MB at all duty cycles. However, adsorption of MB onto the LED emitting surface caused a linear decline in reactor performance over time. With regard to the effect of duty cycle, the observed rate constant of MB degradation, after being adjusted to account for the duty cycle, was greater for 5 and 10% duty cycles than higher duty cycles, providing a value approximately 160% higher at 5% duty cycle than continuous operation. This increase in adjusted rate constant at low duty cycles, as well as contaminant fouling of the LED surface, may impact design and operational considerations for pulsed UV-LED AOP systems.

A headspace gas chromatographic (HS-GC) method has been developed for the determination of residual hydrogen peroxide in pulp bleaching effluents. The method is based on the reaction of hydrogen peroxide and permanganate in an acidic medium (0.1 mol/L), in which hydrogen peroxide is quantitatively converted to oxygen within 10 min at 60°C in a sealed headspace sample vial. The released oxygen is then determined by GC equipped with a thermal conductivity detector. The method is robust, sensitive, and accurate, with reproducibility characterized by a relative standard deviation of <0.5%, a sensitivity whose limit of quantification (LOQ) is 0.96 μmol, and a demonstrated recovery ranging from 98 to 103%. High-quality flax pulp was bleached in a short totally-chlorine-free (TCF) sequence. The LP biobleaching sequence includes an enzyme treatment with laccase in the presence of HBT as mediator (L stage) and a hydrogen peroxide stage (P stage). The operating conditions for the laccase HBT system were optimized by using a sequential statistical plan involving four variables, the influence of which on the properties of the pulp after the P stage was examined over enclosed operation conditions regarding a future industrial application. Mathematical models accurately predicting both pulp properties in terms of the previous four variables. This biobleaching sequence allows obtaining an increase in ISO brightness of 40% and a delignification of 80%. Process variables optimization in flax pulp biobleaching allows establishing the application conditions most appropriated to obtain certain pulp properties and that turn out to be easily adaptable to existing industrial processes. As a novelty, toxicity measurements were determined in L stage effluents. The results of toxicity show that it is possible to apply this LP sequence without having a negative environmental impact.

Almost all of the kraft pulp bleach plants worldwide are now practicing elemental chlorine-free (ECF) process to comply with environmental regulations in different countries. Usually, these conventional ECF bleaching sequences contain one or two alkaline extraction stages of which the first one is often the principal source of color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the resulting effluent. However, the results of this study showed that the ECF sequences which did not include any alkaline extraction stage and contained solely chlorine dioxide decreased both the color and COD loads of the effluent. On the other hand, the ECF sequences containing both chlorine dioxide and hydrogen peroxide but excluding the alkaline extraction stage could lower only the color but not the COD load. It is suggested that the total kappa factor (the ratio of the total active chlorine to the kappa number) affected the COD load and that the content of hexeneuronic acid groups influenced the color of the bleach effluent. Compared to the reference pulp, the viscosity of the pulp from the exclusively chlorine-dioxide-based ECF sequence without the alkaline extraction stage was lower but the tear index and sheet density at a given tensile index were similar.

Pine kraft-anthraquinone (kraft-AQ) pulp was bleached in alkaline solution with hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by either [L(1)Mn(IV)(micro-O)(3)Mn(IV)L(1)](PF(6))(2)] (C1) or [LMn(IV)(2)(micro-O)(3)] (ClO(4))(2) (C2) at 60 and 80 degrees C for 120 min with a catalyst charge of 10 ppm on pulp. The resulting bleached pulp was hydrolyzed with cellulase to obtain insoluble and soluble residual lignins. The alkaline bleaching effluents were acidified to precipitate alkaline-soluble lignins. These lignin preparations were then characterized by 2D heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherence (HMQC) NMR spectroscopic techniques. The results showed that biphenyl (5-5) and stilbene structures of the residual lignin in the pulp are preferentially degraded in both the C1- and C2-catalyzed bleachings, whereas beta-O-4, beta-5, and beta-beta structures undergo degradation to a lesser extent. In both cases, the degradation of the residual lignin increased with the increase in reaction temperature from 60 to 80 degrees C. Thus, the result of C1-catalyzed delignification is not in agreement with the observed decrease in the disappearance rate for substrates in the C1-catalyzed oxidation of lignin model compounds with hydrogen peroxide when the reaction temperature is increased from 60 to 80 degrees C. In addition, the resulting residual lignins in the C2-catalyzed bleaching at 80 degrees C are less degraded than the corresponding lignins in the C1-catalyzed bleaching at both 60 and 80 degrees C. Thus, C1 is more effective than C2 as catalyst in the binucleus Mn(IV) complex-catalyzed bleaching of pine kraft-AQ pulp with hydrogen peroxide.

Pine Kraft-AQ pulp was bleached with hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by [LMn(IV)(2) (mu-O)(3)](ClO(4))(2) at 80 degrees C for 120 min under optimum reaction conditions. The resulting bleached pulp was hydrolyzed with cellulase to obtain insoluble and soluble residual lignins. The alkaline effluent from the bleaching was acidified to precipitate alkaline soluble lignin. These lignin preparations were purified, and then analyzed by 2D HMQC NMR spectroscopic techniques. The results showed that biphenyl (5-5) and stilbene structures are preferentially degraded in the bleaching process, while beta-O-4, beta-5, and beta-beta structures undergo degradation only to a lesser extent. This implies that hydrogen peroxide bleaching using the catalyst is more effective in delignification of softwood pulps than hardwood pulps. The possible reaction mechanisms for the delignification of residual lignin in the pine Kraft-AQ pulp in the bleaching process are discussed on the basis of the 2D HMQC NMR spectroscopic data and the model compound experiments.
