This paper analyses differentiation processes between non-native groups in a stigmatized peripheral neighbourhood of Barcelona. Its more established dwellers – internal migrants from the South of Spain – have set in place differentiation processes between them and the more recently arrived international migrants. To substantivize differentiation processes, in a context where race has been largely silent, they appropriate the "civic terminology" that has become popular in the city in the last decade. In the global context of hyper-regulation and increasing privatization of urban public spaces, this group's discursive strategies, based on the civic/non-civic divide, aim to ensure control over accessible open public space, a resource that is locally scarce. Using the ethnographic example of the tensions around "proper behaviour" in the area's main square, the article explores processes of identification and differentiation in a context where autochthony cannot be unproblematically called upon. This paper provides data from individual interviews conducted with 15 and 16 year-old non-immigrant students from a highly multiethnic secondary urban school in Barcelona, Spain. In this school, mixed classrooms (immigrant and local) and small linguistically heterogeneous working groups are frequent in the mathematics lessons. The focus is on the non-immigrant students’ perspectives on the notion of learning. Findings show that these students interpret certain whole-class and small-group interactions among local and immigrant students as not constitutive of learning. In particular, I explore some of the meanings associated with the representation of the multiethnic classroom as a conflictive place for learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After Ecuador's worst economic downturn in 1999, women left the country in the thousands. They migrated for economic reasons but also hoping to distance themselves from gendered duties and obligations that confined them to oppressive feminine roles. Less than a decade later they bought into Spain's housing bubble in an effort to 'make up' for their departure. I argue that Ecuadorian migrant women's decisions to buy mortgaged homes in Barcelona were in part informed by their conceptualizations of domesticity, care giving, and motherhood. For women portrayed as culpables or 'culprits' for leaving Ecuador and failing to upkeep their caregiving responsibilities in their country of origin, the promise of homeownership became a way of accomplishing complex forms of transnational caregiving as well as upward mobility. This article focuses on gendered conceptualizations of care, motherhood, and kinship amongst Ecuadorian migrant women and the relationship these notions have with housing financialization. Barcelona, a historically bilingual city, changed its demographic profile in the past few decades due to the arrival of a large number of immigrants. In such a context, it seemed relevant to study the socialisation procedures adopted by young newcomers to take part in sociolinguistic dynamics both in the city and at school. This meant investigating how children, as new members of the host society, learn to participate in monolingual, bilingual or multilingual situations. This paper presents part of the results steaming from a research project carried out at a primary school sited in the old quarter of the city of Barcelona. It focuses on the processes of peer linguistic socialisation; that is, between children of the same age born in the city and abroad. The analysis focuses on language choices and the use of code-switching as a resource to index contextual changes (change of activity, participant, topic, etc.). Results reveal that language learning by children of immigrant origin is an imbricate process in which language development is related to the process of learning how to progressively appropriate and manage the linguistic patterns other children offer them. This socialisation process seems to be framed in the cultural expectations of both groups of children and in the social relations at the school and in the city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Environmental protection is not just about big media and political campaigns. There is a silent public that has begun to change attitudes, rescue old habits and adapt them to different areas of this globalized world (domestic, informal …). A cultural change where the reuse of discarded objects, through craft and educational activities serves to launch a series of links and social ties. Migration radically changes children's lives, as well as affecting affinities and generational conflicts in Peruvian families, and spheres of exchange and generational meeting between members that had remained distanced, at times during years. The projects of familiar migration are increasingly associated with children's well-being and development. This paper examines children's participation in migratory processes as social actors in their daily lives and the construction of the family relations when they are regrouped in Barcelona. This text focuses on a concrete example of the political struggle of migrants which, beginning in the last decade and continuing to the present, occupies Catalan public space in the form of an extremely novel social movement led by migrants from the post-colonial peripheries. These migrants, upon installing themselves in the Spanish state and more specifically in the city of Barcelona, choose to escape the position of victim assigned to them by the "miserablist" representation of immigration to become agents and political subjects. Big cities play a dominant role in European research and policies on immigration. However, in recent years the focus has shifted to smaller units. The research upon which this article is based assumes that neighbourhoods' spatial configuration and social tissue constitute an influencing context where interactions develop. Mainly using semi-structured interviews and ethnographic fieldwork, this article examines the experiences of Polish immigrants who live and/or work in the Sagrada Familia neighbourhood in Barcelona. This article highlights some patterns emerging from the accounts of inter-ethnic interactions there, namely that for a number of native interviewees, Polish immigrants are 'invisible' and, in contrast, among Polish immigrants, there are difficulties in understanding Catalan/Spanish cultures, but interactions with Latin-American immigrants are highlighted as frequent. Additionally, the article concludes that urban fabrics (e.g. scarce public areas), local policies (e.g. commercial bias) and socio-economic characteristics (e.g. over-exposition to massive tourism) are factors influencing on inter-ethnic interactions. Many Latin Americans who emigrate to Spain arrive in Barcelona, where they encounter Catalan for the first time. Many find jobs in bars shortly after arriving, where they have to deal with not understanding Catalan-speaking customers. In this article, I present selected data from interviews from a four-year qualitative, ethnographic study of the languages, migration, and identities of Latin American immigrants in Barcelona, in which participants describe their first and early encounters with Catalan. One theme that recurred in interviews was that of bar workers not understanding orders for a tallat, an espresso coffee with a shot of warm milk, known as a 'cortado' in Spanish. I also bring in data from a government media campaign promoting Catalan use with immigrants and a comedic sketch that parodies the same campaign using the ordering of a tallat as an example. ABSTRACT To date, the evolution of residential segregation patterns in southern European cities has received little attention. The case of Barcelona metropolitan area (BMA) is particularly relevant following a rapid growth of immigrant population over a very short period. This empirical study seeks to see if this rapid growth has changed the spatial segregation patterns of immigrant groups and led to the emergence of ethnic enclaves. First, we calculate five indices according to the classic dimensions of residential segregation. Then, we use an adapted version of the Poulsen et al. typology in order to identify ethnic enclaves. In the period under study, there was a general increase in two dimensions: Exposure and clustering. There was a decline in evenness and concentration, and a variety of situations in terms of centralization. The evolution of the segregation indices indicates a diversity of segregation patterns: an increase of segregation according to exposure and clustering dimensions, a decline in evenness and concentration, and a variety of situations in terms of centralization. Finally, the findings confirm the presence of ethnic enclaves following seven years of growth in the immigrant population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This contribution elaborates on the role of local governments in the implementation of EU anti-discrimination policy by taking as an example the work of Barcelona's Office for Non-Discrimination (OND) and its practice in dealing with issues of race and ethnic origin. First, the OND is presented as a local counterpart of state equality bodies. Second, in order to make a more solid argument around the incorporation of cities into EU anti-racial discrimination policy, the OND's broad and intersectional approach to race discrimination as part of migrant human rights is discussed, as well as the way in which the OND performs legal assistance. Based on these findings and drawing on concepts of governance and subsidiarity, the last part of the article reflects more generally on the position and added value of cities in a multi-level system of implementation of the EU racial anti-discrimination policy. This study aims to identify, from an ethnographic perspective, how panethnic boundaries are being created between Gitano people and Roma newcomers who have emigrated from eastern to western Europe. This migration has been driven mainly by discrimination and lack of opportunities in eastern Europe after the transition to a new economy. Although Roma immigrants try to keep connected to their regions of origin, changes in their ethnic identities can also be observed when they settle in their new environment. The fieldwork was conducted in a Spanish neighbourhood with a high percentage of Gitanos and Roma immigrants from eastern Europe. Evidence from this research shows how interactions between people from both groups can promote or diminish panethnic identities and the emergence of panethnic institutions. There is mutual identification between the subgroups even though some elements of dissent and rejection may appear. One of the key components to be taken into account in the shaping and institutionalization of a panethnic identity is the presence of dialogic interactions among the Roma people of different subgroups. These interactions give rise, in a hostile context, to a common identity and solidarity among subjects. Background: The recent increase in the number of immigrants of Barcelona represents a challenge for the public healthcare system, the emergency department being the most used healthcare service by this group. However, utilisation rates in our environment have not yet been studied. We aimed to compare emergency department utilisation rates between Spanish-born and foreign-born residents in a public hospital of Barcelona. Methods: The study population included all adults residing in the area of study and visiting the emergency department of Hospital del Mar in 2004. The emergency care episodes were selected from the Emergency Department register, and the population figures from the Statistics Department of Barcelona. Emergency care episodes were classified into five large clinical categories. Adjusted rate ratios (RR) of utilisation among foreign-born vs. Spanish-born residents were assessed through negative binomial regression. Results: The overall utilisation rate was 382 emergency contacts per 1,000 persons-years. The RR for foreign-born versus Spanish-born residents was 0.62 (95% CI: 0.52; 0.74%). The RR was also significantly below one in surgery (0.51, 95% CI: 0.42; 0.63), traumatology (0.47, 95% CI: 0.38; 0.59), medicine (0.48, 95% CI: 0.38; 0.59) and psychiatry (0.42, 95% CI: 0.18; 0.97). No differences were found in utilisation of gynaecology and minor emergency services. Conclusion: The overall lower utilisation rates obtained for foreign-born residents is consistent with previous studies and is probably due to the "healthy immigrant effect". Thus, the population increase due to immigration does not translate directly into a corresponding increase in the number of emergency contacts. The lack of differences in minor and gynaecological emergency care supports the hypothesis that immigrants overcome certain barriers by using the emergency department to access to health services. Governance is commonly described as the governmental form typical of late-modernity resulting from the collaboration between government and civil society. Governance – we are told – is to be preferred to previous governmental patterns, for not only is it more cost-effective but also participatory and empowering. This article takes such claims at face value and examines them ethnographically to see how they are applied in relation to migrants in the ‘progressive’ city of Barcelona. The article argues that migrants' participation in governance de facto means participation in token consultative institutions and in policy-implementation by proxy (i.e. through local ‘pro-migrant’ NGOs hired to deliver public services to migrants). It also argues that the empowerment that derives from participating in governance is greater for governmental bodies and for the local non-profit ‘immigration industry’ than it is for migrants. The recent emergence of raï music among Moroccan immigrants living in Spain marks a new moment in the history of the form. However, it was not altogether unexpected. Since its inception in the cities of Algeria around thirty years ago as a result of increased rural to urban population flows, raï has been a musical form arising from the experience of migration. As such, it opened a space for the articulation of displaced, uprooted North African identities and is marked by traces of difficult and disjunctured encounters with new forms of modernity. Raï, as it is currently being constructed in Barcelona, offers a discourse for immigrant Moroccans living in Spain with which to construct specific transnational and transcultural identities in their new socio-cultural and economic surroundings. This new strand of raï moves beyond lyrics of love to underline the unmistakeably physical risks attendant on illicit migration across the Straits of Gibraltar. It is this overt emphasis on physical risk that specifically distingishes Spanish/Moroccan raï. In recent years, risk as a defining feature of late modernity has been the subject of considerable theoretical exploration. In the light of such theorizations, this essay examines the first raï CD released in Spain, Chab Samir (Afro-Blue Records, 1999), from the perspective of its music and lyrics, and personal interviews with the lead singer, Samir, and other members of his band. One of the obvious effects of transnationalism is the geographical dispersal and fragmentation of families. Few scholars have looked at this aspect in depth, beyond a mere recognition of the existence of so-called transnational kinship groups. Fewer studies still have considered the implications of transnationalism for women, even though they represent a growing percentage of the migrant population world-wide. The aims of this article are threefold. First, to show the key role that women play in the maintenance of their families and transnational groups; attention is paid to their contribution to the interlocking spheres of productive work, kin work and caring work. Second, to draw attention to the differentiation of transnational practices among two different migrant groups. Third, to spell out some of the consequences that the transnationalisation of social life has for migrant women and their families.
