We theoretically explore signatures of plasmonic Fano interferences in a subwavelength plasmonic metamolecule consisting of closely packed asymmetric gold nanodimers, which lead to the possibility of generating multiple Fano resonances in the scattering spectrum. This spectral feature is attributed to the interference between bright and dark plasmonic modes sustained by the constituent nanodimers. The excited Fano dips are highly sensitive in both wavelength and amplitude to geometry and background dielectric medium. The tunability of induced Fano resonances associated with enhanced electric fields from the visible to infrared region provides promising applications, particularly in refractive index sensing, light-trapping, and photon up-converting. Enhancement of molecular emission is usually obtained by coupling small optical emitters with external resonant structures and systems, as first established by Purcell several decades ago, and verified in several recent investigations using molecules or quantum dots coupled with plasmonic nanoantennas. Here we theoretically investigate in detail a different mechanism for emission enhancement, based on our recent idea of a plasmonic nanolauncher [Phys. Rev. Lett. 2009, 103, 043902], i.e., a metamaterial-inspired ultranarrow waveguide channel operating near its cut-off frequency. Such system is not necessarily at resonance, but its peculiar operation may provide enhanced emission over a relatively broad physical area, which may allow enhancement of emission independent of the position of an individual or of a group of molecules along such plasmonic channel, and the possibility to bend and route the emitted energy with large flexibility. We present here extensive theoretical and numerical results that confirm this intuition and may envision a novel method for molecular emission enhancement at the nanoscale, with more flexibility than the conventional Purcell resonance techniques. In this article, we analyze the dispersion features of cloaking structures formed by plasmonic materials and/or metamaterials. Following our recent proposal for realizing a cloaking metamaterial shell capable of drastically suppressing the total scattering of moderately-sized objects, we investigate the frequency response and dispersion behavior of this anomalous phenomenon. Since the late 19th century, enormous endeavors have been made in extending the scope and capability of optical interferometers. Recently, plasmonic vortices that strongly confine the orbital angular momentum to surface have attracted considerable attention. However, current research interests in this area have focused on the mechanisms and dynamics of polarization‐dependent single plasmonic vortex generation and evolution, while the interference between different plasmonic vortices for practical applications has been unexplored. Here, a method for flexible on‐chip spin‐to‐orbital angular momentum conversion is introduced, resulting in exotic interferograms. Based on this method, a new form of interferometers that is realized by the interference between customized plasmonic vortices is demonstrated. Within wavelength‐scale dimension, the proposed plasmonic vortex interferometers exhibit superior performance to directly measure the polarization state, spin and orbital angular momentum of incident beams. Optical metasurfaces, typically referred to as two-dimensional metamaterials, are arrays of engineered subwavelength inclusions suitably designed to tailor the light properties, including amplitude, phase and polarization state, over deeply subwavelength scales. By exploiting anomalous localized interactions of surface elements with optical waves, metasurfaces can go beyond the functionalities offered by conventional diffractive optical gratings. The innate simplicity of implementation and the distinct underlying physics of their wave-matter interaction distinguish metasurfaces from three-dimensional metamaterials and provide a valuable means of moulding optical waves in the desired manner. Here, we introduce a general approach based on the electromagnetic equivalence principle to develop and synthesize graded, non-periodic metasurfaces to generate arbitrarily prescribed distributions of electromagnetic waves. Graded metasurfaces are realized with a single layer of spatially modulated, electrically polarizable nanoparticles, tailoring the scattering response of the surface with nanoscale resolutions. We discuss promising applications based on the proposed local wave management technique, including the design of ultrathin optical carpet cloaks, alignment-free polarization beam splitters and a novel approach to enable broadband light absorption enhancement in thin-film solar cells. Electrically tunable mid‐infrared metasurfaces with nanosecond response time and broad tuning range are reported. Electrical tuning is achieved by employing strong polaritonic coupling of electromagnetic modes in metallic nanoresonators with voltage‐tunable inter‐subband transitions in semiconductor heterostructures, tailored for a giant quantum‐confined Stark effect. Experimentally, a 220‐nm‐thick multi‐quantum‐well semiconductor layer is sandwiched between a ground plane and a metal layer patterned with plasmonic nanoresonators. Approximately 300 nm absorption peak tuning and over 30% absorption change are demonstrated at around 7 μm wavelength at normal incidence by changing the DC bias voltage from 0 to +5 V. Fast reflectivity modulation of the metasurface is shown with a response time less than ∼10 ns using bias voltage modulation between +2 V and +4 V. Since the bias affects the optical response at the individual nanoresonator level, this approach may be used to create metasurfaces for ultrafast electrical wavefront tuning and beam steering. Metamaterial perfect absorbers (MPAs) are artificial materials composed of an array of subwavelength structures that manipulate electromagnetic waves to achieve extraordinary light absorption properties. Driven by the advent of the Internet of Things, MPAs are employed in microelectromechanical systems for the development of efficient and miniaturized IR detectors, imagers, and spectrometers, thanks to their lithographically tunable peak absorption, spectral selectivity, and ultrathin thickness. MPAs characterized by high absorptance in narrow spectral bands are particularly desirable for the implementation of high‐resolution IR spectroscopic sensors. Yet, no accurate analytical model is currently available to guide the design of an MPA with ultra‐narrow absorption bandwidth, while meeting all the stringent requirements for spectroscopic sensors. Here, a circuit model capable of accurately predicting spectral responses of metal–insulator–metal (MIM) IR absorbers is reported. The model is experimentally validated in the mid‐wavelength IR spectral range and exploited for the first demonstration of an MIM IR absorber that exhibits performance approaching the predicted physical limits: full‐width at half‐maximum ≈3% and near‐unity absorption (η > 99.7%) at 5.83 µm wavelength, while independent of incident angle and polarization of the impinging IR radiation. These unprecedented absorption properties are key enablers for the development of miniaturized, low‐cost, and high‐resolution spectrometers. Ultra‐narrowband metamaterial infrared absorbers and the modified lumped circuit model are presented. The accurate spectral responses obtained by the circuit model are utilized to optimize the design of metal–insulator–metal (MIM) infrared absorbers for high spectral selectivity. The scattering cancellation technique is a powerful tool to reduce the scattered field from electrically small objects in a specific frequency window. The technique relies on covering the object of interest with a shell that scatters light into a far field of equal strength as the object but with a phase shift of π. The resulting destructive interference prohibits its detection in measurements that probe the scattered light. Whereas at radio or microwave frequencies feasible designs have been proposed that allow us to tune the operational frequency upon request, similar capabilities have not yet been explored in the visible. However, such an ability is necessary to capitalize on the technique in many envisioned applications. Here, we solve the problem and study the use of small metallic nanoparticles with an ellipsoidal shape as the material from which the shell is made to build an isotropic geometry. Changing the aspect ratio of the ellipsoids allows us to change the operational frequency. The basic functionality is explored with two complementary analytical approaches. Additionally, we present a powerful multiscattering algorithm that can be used to perform full-wave simulations of clusters of arbitrary particles. We utilize this method to analyze the scattering of the presented designs numerically. Herein we provide useful guidelines for the fabrication of this cloak with self-assembly methods by investigating the effects of disorder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
