The wall system constitutes a large portion of the material used in building construction. Although interior walls cover more surface area within a building, published literature has mainly focused on the performance assessment of exterior walls. The aim of this research is to examine the life cycle environmental, social, and economic performance of interior wall construction methods (i.e., concrete block masonry, wood stud gypsum, and steel stud gypsum) used for industrial, commercial, and institutional buildings. The findings indicated that the environmental, social, and economic performance of concrete block masonry wall is 49%, 23%, and 18% higher than the next best alternative. Energy retrofits can improve the sustainability of a building by decreasing the energy consumption and resulting GHG emissions throughout its life. Adopting critical life cycle thinking is crucial when deciding on how to implement building retrofits. This article first evaluates innovative and proven building energy retrofits through a life cycle thinking lens. Next, it develops a methodological framework to assess building retrofits using four principal measures: environmental, economic, social, and technical criteria. The proposed method was demonstrated using an institutional building in Windsor, Ontario, as a case study. The case study revealed that the selected retrofit might result in the least energy savings, but it is still the preferred alternative because other factors can present valuable trade-offs that are desirable. Small-sized urban neighbourhoods are facing challenges to achieve their sustainability objectives due to lack of resources and their limited economies of scale. Establishing benchmarks and evaluating the sustainability indicators (SIs) for such neighbourhoods using a fixed-point scoring approach without addressing the uncertainties associated with data limitations and vagueness in expert opinion may be misleading. In this research, a set of suitable SIs covering all the sustainability aspects of small-sized neighbourhoods is developed from state-of-the-art NSA tools and expert judgment. A hierarchical-based framework is developed to link the selected SIs with the desired objectives and to the key components of a small-sized neighbourhood. The neighbourhood is divided into three key components, i.e. land use, infrastructure, and socioeconomics, to categorize inputs from experts, based on their areas of expertise. A fuzzy synthetic evaluation technique is used to develop an overall sustainability index for each component by aggregating selected SIs. An excel-based NSA tool is implemented on a case study of the District of Peachland, British Columbia, to evaluate framework’s pragmatic application. Output of the tool in the form of a ‘sustainability radar diagram’ and a ‘sustainability thermometer’ will be useful for decision makers striving to improve the sustainability of small-sized urban neighbourhoods. The building industry has regularly been criticized for resource exploitation, energy use, waste production, greenhouse gas emissions, and impacts on the landscape. The growing population demands more built environment to accommodate the socioeconomic wellbeing. Adopting conventional construction practices would continue the aforementioned issues. Therefore, it is important to integrate life cycle thinking into building construction to minimize its social, environmental, and economic impacts. The objective of this study is to assess the life cycle impact of commonly used wall-roof systems for low rise commercial building construction in Canada. A framework is developed to assess different building alternatives using the triple bottom line of sustainability. Identified environmental and socioeconomic impact indicators are eventually aggregated to develop a life cycle impact index. Material quantities of six wall-roof combinations for a single-storey commercial building were obtained from industrial partners. State-of-the-art life cycle assessment software is used to assess the life cycle impacts of different wall-roof systems. To accommodate decision makers' preferences of sustainability, wall-roof combinations are assessed for three potential scenarios namely, eco-centric, neutral, and economy-centric using multi-criteria decision analysis. The framework has also been implemented on a case study of low rise building in Calgary (Alberta, Canada) to evaluate its practicality. The study results revealed that the concrete-steel building is the most sustainable alternative in neutral and economy-centric scenario while steel-wood building is the most sustainable building in eco-centric scenario. The building stock in the world consumes approximately 40% of the energy and emits one third of the total greenhouse gases emissions (GHG). Improving the energy efficiency in buildings is vital to address the climate change and achieve energy independence (i.e. to become net-zero energy). Improving energy performance in existing buildings has been receiving significant attention recently, which entails reducing energy demand for building operations, without affecting the health and comfort of its occupants. This approach requires strategies beyond mere technical advancements. However, there is limited published literature which has comprehensively addressed these issues. The aim of this paper is to critically review existing body-of-the-knowledge on improving energy efficiency of operating both commercial and institutional buildings. Peer-reviewed journal articles published from year 2000 to 2014 in reputed journals were reviewed. This review investigated contemporary energy efficiency approaches including technical, organizational, and behavioural changes. Based on the comprehensive literature review, a strategy map was developed as a pathway for achieving better building energy performance. It was noted that even though the existing studies predominately focused on technical advancements, approaches such as building behavioural changes have been largely overlooked. Findings of this study provide an important basis for setting up a national and organization wide strategy for improving the energy efficiency of commercial and institutional buildings. The residential sector consumes about 50% of the electricity produced from fossil fuels in Saudi Arabia. The residential energy demand is increasing. Moreover, a simple building energy performance assessment framework is not available for hot arid developing countries. This research proposes an energy performance assessment framework for residential buildings in hot and arid regions, which focuses on three performance criteria: operational energy, GHG emissions, and cost. The proposed framework has been applied to three types of residential buildings, i.e., detached, attached, and low-rise apartments, in five geographical regions of Saudi Arabia. Design Builder® was used to simulate the energy demand in buildings over a whole year. Four types of efficiency improvement interventions, including double-glazed windowpanes, triple-glazed windowpanes, LED lighting, and split air conditioners, were introduced in 12 combinations. Overall, 180 simulations were performed which are based on 12 intervention combinations, three building types, and five regions. Three performance criteria were evaluated for each simulation and then aggregated using a multi-criteria decision analysis method to identify the best intervention strategy for a given building type and a geographical region in Saudi Arabia. Each building type with interventions consumes higher energy in the western, central, and eastern regions and consumes a lesser amount of energy in the southern and northern regions.
