Middle and eastern routes of the South-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) of China, which are approximately located within the area 28°-42°N and 110°-122°E, are being constructed. This paper investigates the past climatic variations on various time scales using instrumental and proxy data. It is found that annual mean surface air temperature has increased significantly during the past 50-100 years, and winter and spring temperatures in the northern part of the region have undergone the most significant changes. A much more significant increase occurs for annual mean minimum temperature and extreme low temperature than for annual mean maximum temperature and extreme high temperature. No significant trend in annual precipitation is found for the region as a whole for the last 50 and 100 years, although obvious decadal and spatial variation is detectable. A seesaw pattern of annual and summer precipitation variability between the north and the south of the region is evident. Over the last 100 years, the Haihe River basin has witnessed a significant negative trend of annual precipitation, but no similar trend is detected for the Yangtze and Huaihe River basins. Pan evaporation has significantly decreased since the mid-1960s in the region in spite of the fact that the trend appears to have ended in the early 1990s. The negative trend of pan evaporation is very significant in the plain area between the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. There was a notable series of dry intervals lasting decades in the north of the region. The northern drought of the past 30 years is not the most severe in view of the past 500 years; however, the southern drought during the period from the 1960s to the 1980s may have been unprecedented. The dryness-wetness index (DWI) shows significant oscillations with periodicities of 9.5 and 20 years in the south and 10.5 and 25 years in the north. Longer periodicities in the DWI series include 160-170- and 70-80-yr oscillations in the north, and 100-150-yr oscillations in the south. The observed climate change could have implications for the construction and management of the SNWDP. The official approval and start of the hydro project was catalyzed by the severe multiyear drought of 1997-2003 in the north, and the operation and management of the project in the future will also be influenced by climate change-in particular by precipitation variability. Summary Much has been written on the hydrology of the Yangtze River in China, especially since the construction of the Three Gorges Dam. Given the range of views in the literature on the impacts of dams and other natural and anthropogenic activities in the catchment on monthly flows, we here set out to analyse the behavior of monthly flows over the period of record 1955–2014. In the literature, the Three Gorges dam has been singled out for particular comment, mostly adverse. In this paper we analyse trend in temperature, precipitation and discharge of the Yangtze River at the monthly time scale over a period that includes the 11 years since the Three Gorges Dam came into operation. The results show that for the upper basin, there has been a marked increase in discharge in the low flow months of January to March that began abruptly in 2003 and an abrupt decrease in flow in October at the same time. Similar changes are found for discharge from the lower basin but in that case the changes have occurred gradually over the period of record. These changes are the outcome of the operation of hydroelectric and flood control dams that have been built continuously in the lower basin since 1955 while in the upper basin the building of the Three Gorges Dam began a phase of rapid dam building not seen in the lower basin. The decreased flows in the late summer and autumn are not of sufficient magnitude to cause any problems for navigation or water supply. The enhanced flows in the winter low flow period are beneficial in that they reduce the likelihood of salt water intrusions in the estuary adversely affecting the supply of freshwater to Shanghai. Abstract: In this paper, the variability of daily temperature in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) for the period 1958–2007 was investigated by selecting three typical temperature variables (daily minimum, mean and maximum temperatures) and the diurnal temperature range (DTR). Three variability patterns of daily mean temperature and two variability patterns of daily minimum and maximum temperatures were first classed, and then statistical properties of three temperature variables in 1958–1985 and 1986–2007 were analyzed. After that, temporal trends of three temperature variables and DTR were detected. Finally, the impacts of urbanization on the variability of daily temperature were investigated. Results indicate that: (1) daily mean temperature shows more complex variability than daily minimum and maximum temperatures; (2) in 1986–2007 three temperature variables have bigger mean values but smaller C v (coefficient of variance) values, and are more close to normal probability distribution; (3) three temperature variables show positive trends in 1986–2007, and the increase of daily mean temperature is more due to the increase of daily minimum temperature in the northern YRD but due to daily maximum temperature in the mid and southern YRD; (4) in the mid and southern YRD, daily maximum temperature has bigger increasing magnitude than daily minimum temperature in 1986–2007, causing positive trend of DTR; and (5) rapid urbanization causes normal distribution of three temperature variables, and notably increasing magnitude of daily temperature and DTR in 1986–2007 at the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Hangzhou Bay. Abstract: Changes on water resources volume of 1960–2007 in the Upper Reaches of the Yangtze River are discussed in this paper. A time series (1960–2007) and its spatial patterns of actual evapotranspiration (ETa) estimation are analyzed based on Advection-Aridity model (A–A model) with selected parameters for 72 meteorological stations in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River Basin. The result indicates that average ETa of the basin changed in stages: slight increases in the first decade; a drop followed by fluctuations and lower increases in the next ten years; and then a dramatic decline in the latest decade, with three abrupt change years detected in the early 1970s, 1990s, and 2000s. ETa increases from mountainous northwest areas to plains in eastern areas, with significant decreases in plain regions and increases in the mountain region. ETa in the Sichuan Basin is found to decrease at the most rapid rate, and ETa in the sub-area to the south of the upland mountain region is increasing significantly. Such patterns of spatial trend in ETa result in reductions in regional variation, both annually and in all seasons. The change in ETa of this area is believed to be related to local water resource changes, and is impacted by the changes in climate factors. Temperature of this area has increased, and sunshine duration hours have shortened, leading to a reduction in net radiation. Relative humidity also has decreased. Comprehensively, reduction in both energy and moisture supply for evapotranspiration result in an increasing ETa. Moreover, a sharp drop of ETa occurred in the early 2000s, and meteorological factors including wind speed also show abrupt change to different extents. A dataset from 763 national Reference Climate and Basic Meteorological Stations (RCBMS) was used to analyze surface air temperature (SAT) change in mainland China. The monthly historical observational records had been adjusted for urbanization bias existing in the data series of size-varied urban stations, after they were corrected for data inhomogeneities mainly caused by relocation and instrumentation. The standard procedures for creating area-averaged temperature time series and for calculating linear trend were used. Analyses were made for annual and seasonal mean temperature. Annual mean SAT in mainland China as a whole rose by 1.24°C for the last 55 years, with a warming rate of 0.23°C decade−1. This was close to the warming of 1.09°C observed in global mean land SAT over the period 1951–2010. Compared to the SAT before correction, after-corrected data showed that the urbanization bias had caused an overestimate of the annual warming rate of more than 19.6% during 1961–2015. The winter, autumn, spring, and summer mean warming rates were 0.28°, 0.23°, 0.23°, and 0.15°C decade−1, respectively. The spatial patterns of the annual and seasonal mean SAT trends also exhibited an obvious difference from those of the previous analyses. The largest contrast was a weak warming area appearing in central parts of mainland China, which included a small part of southwestern North China, the northwestern Yangtze River, and the eastern part of Southwest China. The annual mean warming trends in Northeast and North China obviously decreased compared to the previous analyses, which caused a relatively more significant cooling in Northeast China after 1998 under the background of global warming slowdown. Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria (AAPB) are a group of heterotrophic bacteria capable of photosynthesis. The dynamics of AAPB in the East China Sea, a typical marginal sea characterized by diverse physical-chemical and ecological conditions, were investigated from April 2002 to September 2003. The results showed that the abundance of AAPB varied from 0.16 to 7.9 × 104 cells mL−1 and the percentage of AAPB (AAPB%) in the total heterotrophic bacterial abundance varied from 0.5% to 11.6% over a gradient of environmental conditions. The abundance of AAPB and AAPB% was higher in coastal and continental shelf waters than in oceanic waters. An interesting seasonal pattern was observed in the Yangtze River estuary: the abundance of AAPB was highest in summer and lowest in winter; however, AAPB% was higher in winter than in the other seasons. Throughout the investigation period, variation of AAPB abundance with temperature was much less than that of nonAAPB abundance, suggesting that low temperature was not a limiting factor for AAPB in this case. Close correlation between AAPB and chlorophyll a was observed in each season, suggesting that dependence of AAPB on dissolved organic carbon produced by phytoplankton (PDOC) may be one key factor controlling AAPB distribution.
