Chemiresistors (conductometric sensor) were fabricated on the basis of novel nanomaterials—silica nanosprings ALD coated with ZnO. The effects of high temperature and UV illumination on the electronic and gas sensing properties of chemiresistors are reported. For the thermally activated chemiresistors, a discrimination mechanism was developed and an integrated sensor-array for simultaneous real-time resistance scans was built. The integrated sensor response was tested using linear discriminant analysis (LDA). The distinguished electronic signatures of various chemical vapors were obtained at ppm level. It was found that the recovery rate at high temperature drastically increases upon UV illumination. The feasibility study of the activation method by UV illumination at room temperature was conducted.

A Varian K15 electron linear accelerator (linac) has been considered for installation at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Before experiments can be performed, it is necessary to evaluate the photon and neutron spectra as generated by the linac, as well as the resulting dose rates within the accelerator facility. A computational study using MCNPX was performed to characterize the source terms for the bremsstrahlung converter. The 15 MeV electron beam available in the linac is above the photoneutron threshold energy for several materials in the linac assembly, and as a result, neutrons must be accounted for. The angular and energy distributions for bremsstrahlung flux generated by the interaction of the 15 MeV electron beam with the linac target were determined. This source term was used in conjunction with the K15 collimators to determine the dose rates within the facility.

A portable phoswich detector capable of differentiating between fast neutrons and thermal neutrons, and photons was developed. The detector design is based on the use of two solid-state scintillators with dissimilar scintillation time properties coupled with a single optical sensor: a 6Li loaded glass and EJ-299-33A plastic. The on-the-fly digital pulse shape discrimination and the wavelet treatment of measured waveforms were employed in the data analysis. The instrument enabled neutron spectrum evaluation.

The NPDGamma experiment measures the parity-violating (PV) gamma asymmetry from polarized cold neutrons captured on protons at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The (PV) neutron spin asymmetry A of photons from polarized cold neutron capture on protons is proportional to the Δ I=1 long range weak meson coupling $h_{\pi }^{1}$ between nucleons in the hadronic weak interaction (HWI). Liquid para-hydrogen production data taking concluded in April 2014 and once the background aluminum asymmetry measurements are complete, the PV asymmetry A can be extracted. The bremsstrahlung photon flux from the UNLV particle accelerator (Varian M6 model) was determined using MCNP5 code for 3 MeV and 6 MeV incident electrons. Human biological equivalent dose rates due to accelerator operation were evaluated using the photon flux with the flux-to-dose conversion factors. Dose rates were computed for the accelerator facility for M6 linac use under different operating conditions. The results showed that the use of collimators and linac internal shielding significantly reduced the dose rates throughout the facility. It was shown that the walls of the facility, in addition to the earthen berm enveloping the building, provide equivalent shielding to reduce dose rates outside to below the 2 mrem/h limit. The liver plays an astonishing array of vital functions in the maintenance, performance and regulating homeostasis of the body. It is involved with almost all the biochemical pathways to growth, fight against disease, nutrient supply, energy provision and reproduction. Hepatotoxicity implies chemical-driven liver damage. Certain medicinal agents, when taken in overdoses and sometimes even when introduced within therapeutic ranges, may injure the organ. Chemicals that cause liver injure are called hepatotoxins. Drugs are an important cause liver injury. The aim of the study was to present and analyze the molecular mechanisms of hepatotoxicity for some structurally diverse drugs. Based on the analysis, may be identified and summarized typical molecular structures of different classes of drugs that can determine the processes of hepatic impairment. Tools for remote radiation sensing are essential for environmental safety and nuclear power applications. The use of unmanned aerial systems (UASs) equipped with sensors allows for substantially reducing the radiation exposure of personnel. An ambient temperature Cs2LiYCl6:Ce3+ (CLYC) elpasolite scintillation sensor for simultaneous gamma and neutron measurements was designed as a user-friendly "plug and fly" module integrated into an octocopter robotic platform. Robot Operating System (ROS) was used to analyze the sensor's data. The measured CLYC's energy resolution was <5% at 662 keV gamma rays; neutron flux was measured using 6Li(n,α)t reaction. Time and GPS data were combined with radiation data in the ROS, supporting real time monitoring and assessment tasks, as well as radiation source search missions. Taking into account the advantages of both neutron- and photon-based systems, we propose combined neutron-photon computed tomography (CT) under a sparse-view setting and demonstrate its performance for 3D object visualization and material discrimination. We use a high-performance regularization method for CT reconstruction by combining regularization based on total variation (TV) and curvelet transform in cone beam geometry. It is coupled with proposed 2D material signatures which is pairs of photon to neutron transmission ratios and neutron transmission values per object space voxels. Classification of materials is performed by association of a voxel signature with library signatures; and per object - by majority of voxels in the object. Representation of object-material pairs, for the model in our experiment, a complex scene with group of high-Z and low-Z materials, attains the reconstruction accuracy of 92.1% and the overall high-Z discrimination accuracy of object representation is 85%, and by about 7.5% higher discrimination accuracy than that with 1D signatures which are ratios of photon to neutron transmissions. With a relative noise level of 10%, the method yields the reconstruction accuracies of 87.2%. The analyses are performed in cone beam configuration, with Monte Carlo modeling of neutron-photon transport for the model of object geometry and material contents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the first observation of the parity-violating gamma-ray asymmetry A&#95;{γ}^{np} in neutron-proton capture using polarized cold neutrons incident on a liquid parahydrogen target at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A&#95;{γ}^{np} isolates the ΔI=1, ^{3}S&#95;{1}→^{3}P&#95;{1} component of the weak nucleon-nucleon interaction, which is dominated by pion exchange and can be directly related to a single coupling constant in either the DDH meson exchange model or pionless effective field theory. We measured A&#95;{γ}^{np}=[-3.0±1.4(stat)±0.2(syst)]×10^{-8}, which implies a DDH weak πNN coupling of h&#95;{π}^{1}=[2.6±1.2(stat)±0.2(syst)]×10^{-7} and a pionless EFT constant of C^{^{3}S&#95;{1}→^{3}P&#95;{1}}/C&#95;{0}=[-7.4±3.5(stat)±0.5(syst)]×10^{-11}  MeV^{-1}. We describe the experiment, data analysis, systematic uncertainties, and implications of the result.
