High-frequency driven resonant spin rotators are routinely used as standard instruments in polarization experiments in particle and nuclear physics. Maintaining the continuous exact parametric spin resonance condition of the equality of the spin rotator and the spin precession frequency during operation is one of the challenges. We present a detailed analytical description of the effects of detuning the exact spin resonance on the precessing vertical and in-plane components of the polarization. An important part of the formalism presented here is the consideration of experimentally relevant spin decoherence effects. Within the developed formalism, we address the impact of feedback via pilot-bunch-based comagnetometry on continuous spin flips and on the related interpretation of charged-particle electric dipole moment searches using storage rings. We propose a spin-flip-based tomography of the longitudinal profile of polarization in a bunch, which is important for the evaluation of the polarization-dependent luminosity in collider experiments. We emphasize the potential importance of the previously unexplored phase of the horizontal polarization of the envelope as an indicator of the stability of radio-frequency-driven spin rotations in storage rings and as a testing ground for spin decoherence mechanisms.

Abstract We argue that high-quality data on the reaction $$e^+e^-\rightarrow \pi ^+\pi ^-\eta $$ e + e - → π + π - η will allow one to determine the doubly-virtual form factor $$\eta \rightarrow \gamma ^*\gamma ^*$$ η → γ ∗ γ ∗ in a model-independent way with controlled accuracy. This is an important step towards a reliable evaluation of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. When analyzing the existing data for $$e^+e^-\rightarrow \pi ^+\pi ^-\eta $$ e + e - → π + π - η for total energies squared $$k^2>1\,\text {GeV}^2$$ k 2 > 1 GeV 2 , we demonstrate that the effect of the $$a_2$$ a 2 meson provides a natural breaking mechanism for the commonly employed factorization ansatz in the doubly-virtual form factor $$F_{\eta \gamma ^*\gamma ^*}(q^2,k^2)$$ F η γ ∗ γ ∗ ( q 2 , k 2 ) . However, better data are needed to draw firm conclusions.

Based on the notion that the local dark-matter field of axions or axionlike particles (ALPs) in our Galaxy induces oscillating couplings to the spins of nucleons and nuclei (via the electric dipole moment of the latter and/or the paramagnetic axion-wind effect), we establish the feasibility of a new method to search for ALPs in storage rings. Based on previous work that allows us to maintain the in-plane polarization of a stored deuteron beam for a few hundred seconds, we perform a first proof-of-principle experiment at the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) to scan momenta near 970 MeV/c. This entails a scan of the spin-precession frequency. At resonance between the spin-precession frequency of deuterons and the ALP-induced electric dipole moment (EDM) oscillation frequency, there is an accumulation of the polarization component out of the ring plane. Since the axion frequency is unknown, the momentum of the beam and, consequently, the spin-precession frequency are ramped to search for a vertical polarization change that occurs when the resonance is crossed. At COSY, four beam bunches with different polarization directions are used to make sure that no resonance is missed because of the unknown relative phase between the polarization precession and the axion or ALP field. A frequency window of 1.5 kHz width around the spin-precession frequency of 121 kHz is scanned. We describe the experimental procedure and a test of the methodology with the help of a radio-frequency Wien filter located on the COSY ring. No ALP resonance is observed. As a consequence, an upper limit of the oscillating EDM component of the deuteron as well as its axion coupling constants are provided.

The study of the approach to the quantum ground state and the possibility to detect displacements of macroscopic bodies close to the quantum limit represent pressing challenges in modern physics. In the recent experiment of the JEDI Collaboration at the COSY storage ring, the coherent oscillations of a deuteron beam were detected with an amplitude of only one order of magnitude above the limit of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle of about 40 nm for the one-particle betatron motion. On the other hand, the much discussed search for the permanent electric dipole moment of the proton with an ultimate sensitivity of 10^{−29} e cm requires control of the position of the beam center of gravity with an accuracy of ≈5 pm. In this paper, we develop the full quantum mechanical treatment of the coherent beam oscillations with ultrasmall amplitudes. In agreement with the Ehrenfest theorem, we find a continuity of the description of the coherent betatron motion from the large classical amplitudes down to the deep quantum region below the one-particle Heisenberg limit. We argue that quantum mechanics does not preclude control of the beam center with subpicometer accuracy.

We report on the search for the rare decay η→π0e+e− which is of interest to study C violation in the electromagnetic interaction which would indicate contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, since the allowed decay via a two-photon intermediate state is strongly suppressed. The experiment has been performed using the WASA-at-COSY installation, located at the COSY accelerator of the Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany. In total 3×107 events of the reaction pd→3Heη have been recorded at an excess energy of Q=59.8MeV. Based on this data set the C parity violating decay η→π0γ⁎→π0e+e− via a single-photon intermediate state has been searched for, resulting in new upper limits of Γ(η→π0e+e−)/Γ(η→π+π−π0)

Abstract We analyze the most recent data for the pion vector form factor in the timelike region, employing a model-independent approach based on dispersion theory. We confirm earlier observations about the inconsistency of different modern high-precision data sets. Excluding the BaBar data, we find an updated value for the isospin-violating branching ratio $${\mathscr {B}}(\omega \rightarrow \pi ^+\pi ^-) = (1.46\pm 0.08) \times 10^{-2}$$ B(ω→π+π-)=(1.46±0.08)×10-2 . As a side result, we also extract an improved value for the pion vector or charge radius, $$\sqrt{\langle r_V^2\rangle } = 0.6603(5)(4)\,\text {fm}$$ ⟨rV2⟩=0.6603(5)(4)fm , where the first uncertainty is statistical as derived from the fit, while the second estimates the possible size of nonuniversal radiative corrections. In addition, we demonstrate that modern high-quality data for the decay $$\eta '\rightarrow \pi ^+\pi ^-\gamma $$ η′→π+π-γ will allow for an even improved determination of the transition strength $$\omega \rightarrow \pi ^+\pi ^-$$ ω→π+π- .

Access to essential medications and health products is critical to effective management of kidney disease. Using data from the ISN Global Kidney Health Atlas multinational cross-sectional survey, global access of patients with kidney disease to essential medications and health products was examined. Overall, 125 countries participated, with 118 countries, composing 91.5% of the world's population, providing data on this domain. Most countries were unable to access eGFR and albuminuria in their primary care settings. Only one-third of low-income countries (LICs) were able to measure serum creatinine and none were able to access eGFR or quantify proteinuria. The ability to monitor diabetes mellitus through serum glucose and glycated hemoglobin measurements was suboptimal. Pathology services were rarely available in tertiary care in LICs (12%) and lower middle-income countries (45%). While acute and chronic hemodialysis services were available in almost all countries, acute and chronic peritoneal dialysis services were rarely available in LICs (18% and 29%, respectively). Kidney transplantation was available in 79% of countries overall and in 12% of LICs. While over one-half of all countries publicly funded RRT and kidney medications with or without copayment, this was less common in LICs and lower middle-income countries. In conclusion, this study demonstrated significant gaps in services for kidney care and funding that were most apparent in LICs and lower middle-income countries.

An international survey led by the International Society of Nephrology in 2016 assessed the current capacity of kidney care worldwide. To better understand how governance and leadership guide kidney care, items pertinent to government priority, advocacy, and guidelines, among others, were examined. Of the 116 responding countries, 36% (n = 42) reported CKD as a government health care priority, which was associated with having an advocacy group (χ2 = 11.57; P = 0.001). Nearly one-half (42%; 49 of 116) of countries reported an advocacy group for CKD, compared with only 19% (21 of 112) for AKI. Over one-half (59%; 68 of 116) of countries had a noncommunicable disease strategy. Similarly, 44% (48 of 109), 55% (57 of 104), and 47% (47 of 101) of countries had a strategy for nondialysis CKD, chronic dialysis, and kidney transplantation, respectively. Nearly one-half (49%; 57 of 116) reported a strategy for AKI. Most countries (79%; 92 of 116) had access to CKD guidelines and just over one-half (53%; 61 of 116) reported guidelines for AKI. Awareness and adoption of guidelines were low among nonnephrologist physicians. Identified barriers to kidney care were factors related to patients, such as knowledge and attitude (91%; 100 of 110), physicians (84%; 92 of 110), and geography (74%; 81 of 110). Specific to renal replacement therapy, patients and geography were similarly identified as a barrier in 78% (90 of 116) and 71% (82 of 116) of countries, respectively, with the addition of nephrologists (72%; 83 of 116) and the health care system (73%; 85 of 116). These findings inform how kidney care is currently governed globally. Ensuring that guidelines are feasible and distributed appropriately is important to enhancing their adoption, particularly in primary care. Furthermore, increasing advocacy and government priority, especially for AKI, may increase awareness and strategies to better guide kidney care.

Based on recent progress in the systematic analysis of C and CP violation in the light-meson sector, we calculate the C-odd transition amplitudes η → π0ℓ+ℓ− and η′ → ηℓ+ℓ−. Focusing on long-distance contributions driven by the lowest-lying hadronic intermediate states, we work out the correlations between these beyond-the-Standard-Model signals and the Dalitz-plot asymmetries in η → π0π+π− and η′ → ηπ+π−, using dispersion theory. The term "sustainability" and the conceptual framing that it provides for society must be substantially refined and clarified, if not outright replaced, if the interconnected social and ecological goals the concept is meant to espouse are to heal the world, our home. Sustainability has become a status quo concept held captive to market logics that quantify and appropriate places and creatures alike, rendering them but commodities without intrinsic value, thereby failing to inspire the love that is crucial for the nurture and care of a world wounded by us.
