A flowing-water target was irradiated with a 150 MeV/nucleon beam of 78Kr at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory to produce 77Kr and 76Kr. Real-time gamma-imaging measurements revealed the mass transport of the krypton radioisotopes through the target-water processing, or "isotope harvesting", system. The production rates were determined to be 2.7(1) × 10–4 nuclei of 76Kr and 1.18(6) × 10–2 nuclei of 77Kr formed per incident 78Kr ion. Utilizing an off-gas processing line as part of the isotope harvesting system, a total of 7.2(1) MBq of 76Kr and 19.1(6) MBq of 77Kr were collected in cold traps. Through the decay, the daughter radionuclides 76Br and 77Br were generated and removed from the traps with an average efficiency of 77 ± 12%. Due to the differences in half-lives of 76Kr and 77Kr, it was possible to isolate a pure sample of 76Br with 99.9% radionuclidic purity. The successful collection of krypton radioisotopes to generate 76Br and 77Br demonstrates the feasibility of gas-phase isotope harvesting from irradiated accelerator cooling-water. "Isotope harvesting" is a technique that offers access to exotic radionuclides created as by-products during nuclear science research. Ongoing exploratory work at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) is directed towards the production and extraction of rare radionuclides from a flowing-water target and intends to pave the way for future harvesting efforts at the upcoming Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). Here we present the collection of 62Zn from an aqueous matrix irradiated with a 150 MeV per nucleon 78Kr beam, while synergistically capturing other gaseous reaction products. In addition to the production rate for 62Zn (9.08(30) × 10−5 62Zn per incoming 78Kr), the rates of formation for several other radionuclides were determined as well. The purification of 62Zn from a large number of co-produced radionuclides was performed by anion exchange chromatography, allowing the isolation of 80.5(5.2)% of the generated 62Zn. With the decay of 62Zn the radioactive daughter 62Cu is generated, and with the isolation of pure 62Cu eluate, the principle of a medical radionuclide generator could be demonstrated. To illustrate the applicability of the obtained 62Zn, the isolated product was used in free and DTPA-labelled form in a proof of principle plant uptake study with garden cress employing phosphor imaging for visualization. The upcoming Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University provides a new opportunity to access some of the world's most specialized scientific resources: radioisotopes. An excess of useful radioisotopes will be formed as FRIB fulfills its basic science mission of providing rare isotope beams. In order for the FRIB beams to reach high-purity, many of the isotopes are discarded and go unused. If harvested, the unused isotopes could enable new research for diverse applications ranging from medical therapy and diagnosis to nuclear security. Given that FRIB will have the capability to create about 80% of all possible atomic nuclei, harvesting at FRIB will provide a fast path for access to a vast array of isotopes of interest in basic and applied science investigations. To fully realize this opportunity, infrastructure investment is required to enable harvesting and purification of otherwise unused isotopes. An investment in isotope harvesting at FRIB will provide a powerful resource for development of crucial isotope applications. In 2010, the United States Department of Energy Office of Science, Nuclear Physics, sponsored the first 'Workshop on Isotope Harvesting at FRIB', convening researchers from diverse fields to discuss the scientific impact and technical feasibility of isotope harvesting. Following the initial meeting, a series of biennial workshops was organized. At the fourth workshop, at Michigan State University in 2016, the community elected to prepare a formal document to present their findings. An experiment was performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory using a 140 MeV/nucleon 48 Ca beam and a flowing-water target to produce 47 Ca for the first time with this production route. A production rate of 0.020 ± 0.004 47 Ca nuclei per incoming beam particle was measured. An isotope harvesting system attached to the target was used to collect radioactive cationic products, including 47 Ca, from the water on a cation-exchange resin. The 47 Ca collected was purified using three separation methods optimized for this work: (1) DGA extraction chromatography resin with HNO 3 and HCl, (2) AG MP-50 cation-exchange resin with an increasing concentration gradient of HCl, and (3) AG MP-50 cation-exchange resin with a methanolic HCl gradient. These methods resulted in ≥99 ± 2% separation yield of 47 Ca with 100% radionuclidic purity within the limits of detection for HPGe measurements. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was used to identify low levels of stable ions in the water of the isotope harvesting system during the irradiation and in the final purified solution of 47 Ca.
