Objective: Brucellosis is an endemic zoonosis in Turkey. There are limited studies on the haematological findings of brucellosis in children. This study aimed to evaluate the haematological findings of childhood brucellosis. Methods: The patients' medical records referred to the paediatric haematology outpatient clinic of a hospital in Southeast Turkey due to cytopenia and diagnosed with brucellosis were reviewed retrospectively. Results: Seventeen patients with a mean age of 9.2±3.7 years (range: 3-14) were included in this study. Patients were mostly male (n=11; 64.7%). Fever and arthralgia were the most frequent clinical signs reported (n=9, 52.9% and n=6, 35.3%, respectively). The most common haematological finding was anemia in 11 patients (64.7%), followed by thrombocytopenia in 10 patients (58.8%) and leukopenia in five patients (29.4%). Pancytopenia was found in three patients (17.6%). The median haemoglobin level, platelet and leukocyte count were 10.8 g/dL (IQR 9.5-12.8), 148×109/L (IQR 117-167) and 5.4×109/L (IQR 3.9-7.2), respectively. C-reactive protein (CRP) was high in six patients (6/9; 66.6%), and ferritin was elevated in five (5/14; 35.7%) patients. Elevation of alanine transaminase (ALT) was found in only two patients (2/16; 12.5%). The patients' median serum Brucella agglutination titre was 1:1280 (IQR 320-1280). None of the patients had a complication requiring hospitalization, and all patients received a combined antibiotic therapy for six weeks. Haematological abnormalities improved four weeks after initial treatment. Results: Haematological findings associated with brucellosis are generally not serious, and complete recovery can be achieved with antibiotic treatment for brucellosis alone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The elderly population is more likely to be affected by accidents, such as burns, compared to younger populations because of their diminished host defense. There is limited data about the outcomes of elderly burn patients requiring hospitalization. Methods: In this retrospective study, we assessed the epidemiology and outcomes of burn injuries in elderly patients (>60 years old) admitted to a burn unit of a tertiary medical center based on patient characteristics, type and extent of burns, treatment, hospital stay and mortality rates. Results: Forty-eight elderly burn patients among 870 burn patients during the study period were evaluated. Fire was the most common cause of burns (77.1%). Most of the burns involved more than 20% of total body surface area. Twenty-six (54.2%) patients died during hospitalization. Although burn surface area slightly and non-significantly increased in patients over 75 years, there was a significantly increased mortality rate in these patients. Multivariate linear regression analysis revealed burn area and age as independent associates of mortality. Conclusion: Our data show a high mortality rate in elderly burn patients. Introduction: Stenosing tenosynovitis of the fingers is one of the most evaluated pathology of the hand. Even though steroid treatment is the primary choice, in case of resistance to steriod treatment or in severe cases surgery comes to mind as a first choice. Material and Methods: The aim of this study is to evaluate the results of 289 trigger finger releases in 232 patients. The data were collected from patients` medical records. Results: The most common affected fingers were thumb (166) %57;, middle finger (54) %19; ring finger (34) %12; index finger (20) %7; and small finger (15) %5. In twenty of patients carpal tunnel releasing was performed simultaneously with trigger finger surgery. Conclusion: Surgery related complications such as wound infection, nerve damage, wound dehiscence, bowstringing deformity and range of motion decrease on joints were evaluated. There were no surgery related complications or recurrence was seen. Open trigger release seems to be a safe and effective choice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
