Climate change and militarism pose existential threats to human existence, and are linked through a number of related processes including access to resources, patterns of consumption, and the workings of the global economy. As nations increasingly militarize their domestic affairs and international postures alike, such patterns can feed back into systems of resource extraction and the production of wastes that are driving climate change. In the face of these interlinked and potentially cataclysmic issues, peace educators should strive to develop forms of pedagogy that address the core challenges by suggesting avenues of authentic engagement and seeking to cultivate a sense of hopefulness despite the mounting crises. This article explores the ways in which educators might teach to this generational "test" characterized by the conjoined challenges of climate change and militarism, drawing upon concrete classroom experiences along with the aspirational aim of sustaining optimism in a time rife with apathy and despair.

The digital age features titillating technologies, on-demand consumption, and information saturation. Technology has a unique capacity to offer a sense of greater connection, even as its actual workings may yield deeper forms of dislocation and alienation. While the marketing of new tech often highlights the potential for enhanced mobility, access, equity, and opportunity, the emerging evidence on the full range of impacts is beginning to tell another story. Among other challenges, there are nascent accounts of the effects technology is having on youth in particular, including disconcerting rates of anxiety, depression, and even aggression. Constant use of electronic devices may impair the ability to take responsibility for conduct, manage one's emotions, and to develop strong bonds of empathy for others. Some tech pioneers have begun openly questioning their handiwork, and a larger coalition of former industry insiders has coalesced in order to confront the effects of social media and smartphones—with one even characterizing the dangers of technology saturation as a gathering "existential threat." This article explores the local dimensions of movement work being done with regard to ostensibly global issues such as economic justice and environmental degradation. It is posited that local work focusing on peace/nonviolence and resilience/sustainability is often emphasized by virtue of necessity and efficacy alike. Issues of global import play out in myriad local contexts, and represent a point of convergence between peace and environmental movements. This analysis highlights the inherent connection between social and environmental issues, and between microcosmic and macrocosmic processes. Justice is an overused concept that is in danger of losing its meaning altogether. Our generational task is to reclaim its essential teachings of empathy and equality as we strive to find the hidden opportunities within the myriad crises presently before us. By placing our intentions and actions within the ambit of ‘the arc of the moral universe,’ we can recapture a sense of wonder that will serve to guide our choices as we navigate the lesson-filled road ahead. The article examines the correlation between homelessness and nonviolent resistance within the U.S. By referencing the philosophies and efforts of advocates of nonviolent civil disobedience, such as Indian activist Mahatma Gandhi and American civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. The author used homelessness to frame a conversation about the need for social change, elements of individual will and community solidarity, and the obstacles that inhibit movements for peace and human rights. The issue is examined at different levels of scale, from municipal policy to national trends to global developments.

The invocation of the label ‘terrorist’ has been deployed with increasing frequency and to such an extent that it blunts effective dialogue on important cultural and political issues. In particular, the burgeoning category of ‘ecoterrorism’ has emerged as the leading domestic threat, according to officials. It has increasingly been invoked as a method of discrediting and investigating mainstream environmental groups that employ strategies of longstanding, acceptable, democratic behavior. The prospects for meaningful dissent are becoming tenuous at best, drawing parallels with US history wherein acts that would now be called terrorism were justified on the grounds that nonviolent petitions for redress had been rendered to no avail. In this sense, the terrorism talisman becomes something of a self‐fulfilling prophecy, since clamping down on legitimate peaceful dissent tends to foster the appearance of more confrontational, even violent, methods. This essay explores the restorative implications of anarchist communities through an analysis of processes such as norm formation, sanctioning, conflict resolution, and economic exchange. The study explores ways in which anarchist communities employ various restorative measures to maintain group cohesion and achieve a modicum of social control through the application of natural phenomena such as diffuse power, fluid authority, community consensus and mutual aid. Drawing upon studies of communities manifesting anarchist tendencies—including utopian experiments, indigenous cultures, and the unique case of the Rainbow Family of Living Light—a picture begins to emerge wherein conceptions of property and the social dynamics that inhere within a community are inextricably linked, suggesting the propensity of anarchist communities to promote an organic synthesis of self, society, and nature. In the end, by exploring tenets associated with the nascent restorative justice paradigm, it is observed that anarchist communities manifest principles that challenge the dominant conceptions of criminality and legality, providing a framework for envisioning models of justice-in-practice that appear on the horizon of possibility and potentiality. Writing an essay about hope in these times feels like an indulgence of privilege. Still, with full awareness of the implications, I want to insist that we not lose hope, that we make it meaningful, and that we go so far as to make its cultivation a central focus of our lives and work. This essay is intended to serve as a calling card for like-minded inquirers to reach out across time and space, to find ourselves and one another in the engaged optimism of meaningful work in the world, and as an acknowledgment of appreciation for all of those who do so.
