Interactions between bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and fishing gear have negative impacts on both dolphins and fisheries. Therefore, the damage and economic loss caused to the purse seine fishery were evaluated on a spatio-temporal scale, and the catch composition was addressed. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with the fishers, and observations aboard the boat were recorded between August 2018 and July 2019 in the M'diq region, northwestern Morocco. Throughout the study period, the frequency of fishing trips attacked by bottlenose dolphins was 44.75% (n=324), and the catch damage was 33%. In addition, depredated fishing operations were significantly lower in CPUE than unattacked ones. The total mending cost was 35,533.3$, with a difference between months and seasons. Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) attacked 32.2% of the fishing operations. However, this frequency of fishing operations depredated by depth was not significant. The area of Al Hoceima in Morocco occupies a strategic biological position concerning the trajectory of migratory species. Bycatch and standing data in this area are still lacking. However, knowledge of the number of stranded individuals/species and the bycatch rate/total catch for each fishing gear is crucial to adopting more effective conservation stratégies. Given this lack of information, monitoring of total standing and bycatch data was conducted from January To June 2021. Two different approaches were used in this study: on-board observation of longline, trawlers, and seiner vessels for bycatch rate and monitoring of the torture standing area through selfdéclaration by sensitized fishermen. The results showed the existence of two species. Dermochelys Caracas (Vandelli, 1761) (1 individual) was stranded on Calabonita beach, and Caretta-Caretta (Linnaeus, 1758) was caught in longliners (two individuals) and trawlers (three individuals). No individuals were reported in purse seiners. For the first time, preliminary data on the bycatch and standing of tortures in Al Hoceima have been determined and this information is vital To implementing future conservation measures. The port of Al Hoceima is located on the Mediterranean coast about 150 km west of Nador city, the western extremity of Al-Hoceima Bay, and is the only Mediterranean gateway in the North-Central region. The port of Al Hoceima is characterized by coastal and artisanal fishing. The objectives of this study were the knowledge of the main fleets that exist in the Al Hoceima region, to identify the different fishing gears used and to inventory, the fishing resources caught and landed in the port of Al Hoceima. A detailed survey (concerning the fishing vessels and their characteristics related to the fishing method and the landed catches) was used and analyzed during the period between Avril and September 2020 in the port of Al Hoceima. The results showed the existence of three types of coastal fleets. The benthic trawlers (15 units), the longliners (16 units), and the purse seiners (14 units). The catches of the fleets were depending on the target species and characterized by different types of species and also by those groups with a very high market value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An epidemiological study on the stings of Pelagia noctiluca was carried out on four Mediterranean beaches in Morocco. Data were retrieved from patients seeking medical treatment after a jellyfish sting. A total of 1321 patients presented with P. noctiluca stings during the summer of 2018. Most of the injuries were observed in persons aged 11-20 years. The stings were located more on the lower (53%) than on the upper limbs (27%). A total of 61% of those seeking treatment were Moroccan tourists, 29% were local residents and 9% were foreign tourists. The main medications provided were antiseptics (54%), non-pharmacological treatments (41%) and antibiotics (4%). The continuing presence of P. noctiluca in the Moroccan Mediterranean makes it necessary to set effective strategies to prevent and minimise their impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seven vegetable oils consumed by humans were tested for genotoxic activity in the Drosophila somatic mutation and recombination test. The oils included five seed oils (sesame, sunflower, wheat germ, flax, and soy oil) and both first-class extra-virgin and low-grade (refined) olive oil. Larvae of the standard (STD) and highly bioactive (NORR) crosses of Drosophila melanogaster were fed medium containing 6% and 12% of each of the oils. Flax oil produced the strongest response, while sesame, wheat germ, and soy oil showed some genotoxic activity. Sunflower and the low-grade olive oil gave inconclusive results, and extra-virgin olive oil was clearly nongenotoxic. It is argued that the genotoxicity is probably due to the fatty acid composition of the oils, which after peroxidation can form specific DNA-adducts., (2004 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)
