A persistent stratospheric aerosol layer first appeared during July 2019 above Thessaloniki, Greece (40.5°N, 22.9°E). It was initially at 12 km and, during August 2019, was even up to 20 km, with increased thickness and reduced attenuated backscatter levels till the end of the year. In this study, we analyze the geometrical and optical properties of this stratospheric layer, using ground-based Lidar measurements, CALIOP/CALIPSO & OMPS-LP space-borne observations, as well as CAMS/ECMWF assimilation experiments. The main aim of the paper is to present an overview of this atmospheric feature and to identify any temporal changes in the aerosol properties that would signify substantial changes in the composition of this long-lasting stratospheric plume over Thessaloniki. This aim is further enhanced by emphasizing the importance of the combined information based on active ground- and space-borne lidars, passive remote sensing, and models during the complex stratospheric aerosol conditions as those encountered during 2019. The layer’s origin is linked to the Raikoke volcanic eruption in the Kuril Islands in June 2019, yielding a particle linear depolarization ratio less than 0.05, while some indications exist that the intense forest fires at mid and high northern latitudes throughout the summer of 2019 also contributed to the persistent layer. We report that in July, mainly volcanic sulphate aerosol layers with a 1–3 km vertical extent were identified in the stratosphere at ~15 km over Thessaloniki, while after August and until the end of 2019, the plume heights showed a significant month-to-month variability and a broadening (with thickness greater than 3 km) towards lower altitudes. The aerosol optical thickness was found to be in the range between 0.004 and 0.125 (visible) and 0.001 and 0.095 (infrared) and the particle depolarization of the detected stratospheric plume was found to be 0.03 ± 0.04, indicative of spherical particles, such as sulphate aerosols.

In this study, we compare the diurnal variation in stratospheric ozone of the MACC (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate) reanalysis, ECMWF Reanalysis Interim (ERA-Interim), and the free-running WACCM (Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model). The diurnal variation of stratospheric ozone results from photochemical and dynamical processes depending on altitude, latitude, and season. MACC reanalysis and WACCM use similar chemistry modules and calculate a similar diurnal cycle in ozone when it is caused by a photochemical variation. The results of the two model systems are confirmed by observations of the Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb-Emission Sounder (SMILES) experiment and three selected sites of the Network for Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) at Mauna Loa, Hawaii (tropics), Bern, Switzerland (midlatitudes), and Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard (high latitudes). On the other hand, the ozone product of ERA-Interim shows considerably less diurnal variation due to photochemical variations. The global maxima of diurnal variation occur at high latitudes in summer, e.g., near the Arctic NDACC site at Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. The local OZORAM radiometer observes this effect in good agreement with MACC reanalysis and WACCM. The sensed diurnal variation at Ny-Ålesund is up to 8% (0.4 ppmv) due to photochemical variations in summer and negligible during the dynamically dominated winter. However, when dynamics play a major role for the diurnal ozone variation as in the lower stratosphere (100–20 hPa), the reanalysis models ERA-Interim and MACC which assimilate data from radiosondes and satellites outperform the free-running WACCM. Such a domain is the Antarctic polar winter where a surprising novel feature of diurnal variation is indicated by MACC reanalysis and ERA-Interim at the edge of the polar vortex. This effect accounts for up to 8% (0.4 ppmv) in both model systems. In summary, MACC reanalysis provides a global description of the diurnal variation of stratospheric ozone caused by dynamics and photochemical variations. This is of high interest for ozone trend analysis and other research which is based on merged satellite data or measurements at different local time.

MOZAIC-IAGOS data are used to assess the ability of the MACC reanalysis (REAN) to reproduce distributions of ozone (O3) and carbon monoxide (CO), along with vertical and inter-annual variability in the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere region (UTLS) over Europe for the period 2003–2010. A control run (CNTRL, without assimilation) is compared with the MACC reanalysis (REAN, with assimilation) to assess the impact of assimilation. On average over the period, REAN underestimates ozone by 60 ppbv in the lower stratosphere (LS), whilst CO is overestimated by 20 ppbv. In the upper troposphere (UT), ozone is overestimated by 50 ppbv, while CO is partly over or underestimated by up to 20 ppbv. As expected, assimilation generally improves model results but there are some exceptions. Assimilation leads to increased CO mixing ratios in the UT which reduce the biases of the model in this region but the difference in CO mixing ratios between LS and UT has not changed and remains underestimated after assimilation. Therefore, this leads to a significant positive bias of CO in the LS after assimilation. Assimilation improves estimates of the amplitude of the seasonal cycle for both species. Additionally, the observations clearly show a general negative trend of CO in the UT which is rather well reproduced by REAN. However, REAN misses the observed inter-annual variability in summer. The O3–CO correlation in the Ex-UTLS is rather well reproduced by the CNTRL and REAN, although REAN tends to miss the lowest CO mixing ratios for the four seasons and tends to oversample the extra-tropical transition layer (ExTL region) in spring. This evaluation stresses the importance of the model gradients for a good description of the mixing in the Ex-UTLS region, which is inherently difficult to observe from satellite instruments.
