BackgroundStillbirth always resulted in a multi-dimensional impact from the individual level to the country level at large. It causes psychological depression, social stigmatization, and decreased quality of life for women. Despite several studies conducted in Ethiopia, no national pooled estimates were done. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis sought to assess intrapartum stillbirth and associated factors among women who had childbirth in Ethiopia using the available published evidence.MethodsThe current review included studies conducted in Ethiopia. The databases used primarily were Medline/PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, Ethiopian University Repository Online, CINAHL, African Journals Online and Cochrane Library. All cross-sectional studies conducted in English and met eligibility criteria were included in the final review. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed. Data extraction and analysis were also performed using Microsoft Excel and STATA version 14 software respectively.ResultsIn the current review, eleven studies were included, and their quality was assessed before being chosen for the final review. The pooled prevalence of intrapartum stillbirth among women who had childbirth in Ethiopia was 9.21% [95% CI (7.03%, 11.39%); I2 = 90.2, P = 0.000]. Women with a previous history of stillbirth [OR = 5.14, 95% CI (3.53–6.75), I2 = 60.0%, p = 0.04] and had no use of antenatal care {[OR = 0.43, 95% CI (0.18–0.68) I2 = 85.3%, p = 0.001]} were significantly associated with intrapartum stillbirth among women who gave childbirth.ConclusionsNearly one-tenth of women who had childbirth in Ethiopia had an intrapartum SB. Revitalizing the existing health extension package particularly family health services with emphasis on focused antenatal care and counselling as well as with prompt referral system would reduce intrapartum SB. This review calls for the need to assess the quality of ANC provision and tailor targeted interventions to best improve the service quality.

BackgroundIn combination with HIV infection, malnutrition is a complicated medical condition with high morbidity and mortality rates in affected children due to a variety of socioeconomic and medical etiological variables. To combat this, information from a range of contexts is required, but there is little evidence, particularly about the nutritional status of under 15 living with HIV in impoverished communities such as conflict affected areas. Therefore, in this study the magnitude and related factors of stunting among under 15 children antiretroviral therapy at public health facilities was assessed.MethodsAn institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among under 15 children living with HIV in conflict-affected zones of Southern Ethiopia. After providing written informed consent to study participants, data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire and anthropometric measurements. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with nutritional status, using SPSS Version 25.ResultsOf the 401 participants, 197 (49.1%, 95% CI: 0.44, 0.54) had height-for-age z-score ≤ -2. In the multivariable analysis, larger household size (AOR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.04–2.40), dietary diversity (AOR = 1.78; 95% CI: 1.07–2.96) and having a history of recurrent diarrhea (AOR = 1.96; 95% CI: 1.07–3.59) were significantly associated with chronic under nutrition.ConclusionsThe prevalence found in this study was high when compared with the stunting target set in SDG, which states to end all forms of malnutrition In order to mitigate the negative health effects of diarrhea during HIV therapy, extra attention needs to be paid to facilitate timely detection and on-going monitoring. Nutrition programs in conflict-affected areas need to consider households with larger family sizes and/or routinely having fewer food groups.

BackgroundIn Ethiopia, the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among the adult population ranges to 19.1%. The disease's impact has increased in low-resource settings due to a lack of knowledge about the condition and its risk factors. Diabetes is one of the numerous causes of CKD. Despite this, little was known in Ethiopia, particularly in the study area. This study aimed to identify the determinants of CKD among diabetic patients enrolled in care and follow up at pastoralist health facility of Jinka General Hospital (JGH), Southern Ethiopia, 2023.MethodsAn institutional-based cross-sectional study design was conducted among 626 diabetic patients recruited through a systematic random sampling. Data was collected using a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire and entered into Epi data version 7.2 and then exported to the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25 for further analysis. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to find eligible variables for the later analysis. Variables with p < 0.25 at bivariate logistic regression were selected for multivariate logistic regression analysis. The variables with p < 0.05 at the multivariate analysis were taken as statically significant in the final model.ResultsThe prevalence of CKD was 2.7% (95% CI: 1.12–6.01%). Place of residence (AOR: 4.84; 95% CI: 1.51–15.40), presence of hypertension (AOR: 5.69; 95% CI: 1.58–20.51) and family history of CKD (AOR: 6.20; 95% CI: 1.40–15.49) were factors associated with CKD among diabetes patients.ConclusionThe prevalence found in this study was low when compared with the local studies. Provision of health education to diabetic patients on preventative measures such as physical exercise is cost-effective approach. Factors associated with CKD among diabetics can be significantly mitigated by strengthening the existing NCDs prevention packages in the study area particularly and in Ethiopia generally.
