This research was conducted to assess yield and some yield components of 65 advanced bread wheat mutant lines of M6 generation selected from M4 populations of 4 different bread wheat genotypes. They were sown using an augmented design consisting of five blocks of which every block had 13 mutant advanced lines and 4 check genotypes (parents) in the 2014-2015 growing season. According to the data obtained from the experiment, there was a great variation for plant height (69.15-119.56 cm), spike length (9.26-11.78 cm), number of grains per spike (30.59-59.84), grain weight per spike (1.43-3.13 g), harvest index (32.57-48.37%), thousand grain weight (34.13- 55.93 g) and grain yield (4712-9515 kg ha-1). The 33 lines for plant height, 22 lines for spike length, 21 lines for the number of grains per spike, 31 lines for grain weight per spike, 35 lines for harvest index, 30 lines for 1000 grain weight and 33 lines for grain yield have been found to perform better than check genotypes. According to the results of the study, MT35, MT14, MT27, MT19, MT20 and MT15 advanced mutant lines were superior to the parents in more than one trait. These mutant lines were selected for pre-registration yield trials, and they may prove useful as a parent for yield improvement in a wheat breeding program. Gamma irradiations with 100 and 200 Gy may be more beneficial for yield improvement in wheat mutation breeding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Leaf rust caused by Pucinia recondita tritici is one of the most important diseases of bread wheat worldwide. It is considered that the most environmentally sound; low cost method of controlling leaf rust is to breed and grow genetically resistant wheat varieties. In the research, twentyfour bread wheat varieties grown intensively were used as genetic material in Trakya Region where the North-West Part of Turkey. To create artificial leaf rust epidemic in field conditions, two sensitive varieties (Morrocco and Cumhuriyet 75) was sown after each ten genotypes, and the reactions of the varieties to leaf rust were investigated in field conditions. Isogenic lines carrying the genes Lr9, Lr14, Lr19, Lr24 and Lr47 from CIMMYT were used as control genotypes in molecular analysis. In the field conditions, although Pehlivan, Selimiye, Sagittario, Tina, Anapo, Montchill and Saraybosna were the most sensitive genotypes, Nota, Kate A1, Prostor and Sana were the most resistant bread wheat varieties to leaf rust. It was determined that Sana, Pehlivan, Golia, Falmura 85, Saroz 95, Renan, Sirena, Kate A1, Selimiye, Bezostoja 1, Saraybosna, Nina and Tina varieties have Lr9 gene with SSR analysis. It has been observed that all bread wheat varieties carry Lr14, Lr19, Lr24 and Lr47 (except Krasunia, Aldane and Gelibolu varieties) genes. It is revealed that Lr9 and Lr47 genes should be taken into consideration in the studies to be performed in the region and these genes will be useful to examine together with a larger number of leaf rust genes for more successful results in breeding studies. This research was carried out in the experimental fields of Department of Field Crops, Faculty of Agriculture, the University of Namık Kemal in 2014-2015. In the study, totally 30 bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes (15 cultivars; early, medium-early and late-maturing; 10 lines are tolerant to the heat-temperature stress which were provided by CIMMYT-International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center), 5 lines (were taken from the same university's wheat breeding program which was collaborated by the CIMMYT) were used as an experimental material. The experiment was adjusted in a split-plot design with 3 replicates. Sowing dates (Normal (NS November 09, 2014) and Late sowing (LS January 09, 2015)) were constituted the main plots, and the genotypes constituted the sub-plots. These physiological traits ((membrane thermostability (MT), canopy temperature (CT), leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) and stomatal conductance (SC)) were measured at the LS stage due to giving much more correct, logical and meaningful results, but grain yield (GY) was fixed for all the sowing dates. Obtained findings are: The GY was varied between (4.35- 6.34 t ha-1) for genotypes; the MT was changed between (10.58-66.25%); the CT was realized between (17.67-22.00 oC); the LCC was varied between (38.30-53.30 SPAD) and the SC was changed between (25.20-166.80 mmol m-2 s-1). It was observed that most of the CIMMYT originated genotypes are tolerant to high-temperature stress and most of the wheats that are grown in Thrace Region are negatively affected by the high-temperature stress. Brachypodium distachyon (L.) P.Beauv. is a model grass species that is useful for studying temperate cereal, forage, and energy crops. In this study we aimed to determine the genome size and species identity in the collections of the B. distachyon complex that included samples from 56 different locations in Turkey, applying chromosome counting and nuclear genome size evaluation by flow cytometry method (FCM). Moreover, the study examined whether diverse geographical conditions at the collecting sites influence the genome size. Chromosomal analysis revealed that the number of B. distachyon (x = 5, 2n = 10) genotypes was 48 and the number of B. hybridum (x = 5 + 10, 2n = 30) ones was 11. No genotypes of B. stacei were found. FCM analyses revealed that the minimum and maximum genome size of B. distachyon was 0.732 and 0.752 pg2C-1, respectively. The mean genome size of B. distachyon was 0.743 pg2C-1. The mean genome size of B. hybridum was 1.431 pg2C-1 with the minimum 1.417 pg2C-1 and maximum 1.451 pg2C-1. Intraspecific variation in the genome size was identified for both species. It was determined that geographical origin (localization, altitude) had a statistically significant effect on genome size in B. distachyon. In addition, a negative correlation was found between altitude and genome size in this species. Brachypodium distachyon is a new model plant species for cool season grasses. In this study, 48 natural B. distachyon populations from the collection stored at Namık Kemal University, Department of Field Crops; which were collected from different geographic regions of Turkey were used. Seventeen morphological characters and their relationship with altitude were investigated in the study. Based on the result of study, average properties were 24.7 cm for plant height, 5.6 cm for length of flag leaf, 4.5 mm for width of flag leaf, 4.5 g for biomass weigth (except the root), 34 for spike number per stem, 4 for number of stem without spike, 111 for number of spikelet per plant, 372 for number of seed per plant, 1.95 g for seed weight per plant, and 5.22 g for the thousand kernel weight. Additionally, average duration for seed germination, heading and anthesis were determined to be 15, 125, and 136 days respectively. It was determined that most of the plants had green colour, feathered structure and erect forms. But, semi-erect and even prostrate forms were also observed in some populations. All the data was subjected to principle component analysis. The results of the analysis indicate that B. distachyon collection used in this study have a tremendous morphological variation. Based on the results, duration of the germination had a negative correlation with increasing altitude while thousand kernel weight and plant appearance had a positive correlation. A study was performed to evaluate the effects of environment (E) and genotype (G) × E interactions (GGE) for quality traits and grain yield in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). ANOVA and GGE biplots were used to assess quality performance and stability in 36 genotypes of bread wheat through a three-location trial over two cropping seasons in the Thrace Region of Turkey. The 36 wheat genotypes used were classified into eight different groups, including landraces, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and advanced lines. The data showed a wide range of variation for milling quality parameters with regard to gluten quantity and quality, as well as for grain yield. Genotypes, location, and year, in this order, contributed to this diversity. Remarkably, all the traits except grain protein content showed a larger genotype effect than location (L) effect; the interaction G × L was usually more important than the G × Y. Genotypic and location components markedly exceeded G × L and Y × L for all variables, with the exception of grain yield, in which the G × Y effect was greater than locations according to ANOVA analysis. Noticeable continuous progress (53%) was observed in genetic grain yield during the last 60 yr without limiting wheat quality. GGE biplot analysis found that, on average, the biplots accounted for 80 to 85% of G and G × E variation present. In this research, three different hormones and five different hormone dosages were applied on cuttings were taken from Anatolian sage plants (Salvia fruticosa Mill.) before flowering period. NAA, IBA (0, 60, 120, 180, 240 ppm) and IAA hormones (0, 100, 200, 300, 400 ppm) were prepared by dissolving in distilled water. Stem cuttings were kept in hormone solution for 24 hours and they were planted in perlit medium under greenhouse conditions. After a month, the number of rooted stem cutting, the number of root per stem cuttings, root length and root weight were determined on stem cuttings. Rooting was observed in all of the cuttings for both samples to which hormone was applied and to which hormone was not applied. According to the result of the variance analysis, the effects of the hormones and hormone doses on the examined characters were found significant as statistically. According to the results obtained, IAA application increased root number considerably. While high hormone dose applications caused the notable increase in root weight and root number in all of three hormones, low hormone applications did not affect root length. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Combination breeding and mutation breeding are widely used methods in plant breeding. Intensive studies are carried out on biotechnological methods that will allow obtaining homozygous lines in a short time in populations obtained with these two techniques. Numerous studies have been carried out by different researchers on mutation breeding in wheat. There are few studies on anther culture response in mutagen-treated genotypes. Two different bread wheat promising advanced lines were used as the material in the study, in which the possibilities of combining mutation breeding with anther culture through ionizing radiation in high quality wheat breeding were investigated. In the study, the responses of advanced bread wheat mutant lines to anther culture, to which eight different doses of gamma rays (0, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400 Gy) were applied, including the control, were investigated. There are significant differences between genotypes and irradiation doses for all traits studied. It has been shown that it is possible to decrease albinism and increase the response of anther culture with dose-dependent gamma irradiation depending on bread wheat varieties. In the multiple comparison test to classify the difference between doses; statistically, 150 gray dose 5.60 is in the first statistical class and in the first place with the number of transferred green plants. After that, it ranks second in the same class with the number of green plants transferred with a 300 gray dose of 5.21. In the total number of regenerated green plants excluding controls (888), 635 unit (71.5%) and 205 unit (23.1%) haploids and spontaneous double haploid plants were obtained, respectively. In the study integrated into the bread wheat breeding program, a total of 205 spontaneous double haploid mutant lines were produced. According to the data obtained, it was shown that the gamma ray doses of 150 and 200 Gy had a significant stimulation effect on all parameters studied and ultimately the success index of anther culture in bread wheat compared to control. The study was carried out with a total of 24 bread wheat genotypes including 20 advanced lines and 4 check varieties (Gerek79, Carisma, Bayraktar2000, and Artico) with soft grain structure and four replications according to the randomized complete block design in Hamidiye and Karabayır locations of Eskişehir during the 2014-2015 growing season. In the study, grain yield, thousand grain weight, test weight, kernel hardness, Zeleny sedimentation value, ash content and protein content were investigated in the genotypes. According to the results of the analysis of variance performed for the traits examined in the study, the differences between location, bread wheat genotypes and interaction averages were found to be statistically significant, except for Zeleny sedimentation value and protein content, respectively. It is understood that there is a wide variation between genotypes and locations for other traits, except for the protein ratio trait. While location effects are higher than genotype effects for thousand grain weight, test weight, ash content and protein content, genotype effects are higher than location for single kernel characterization system and Zeleny sedimentation value. The mean grain yield of biscuit wheat genotypes ranged from 4425 kg ha-1 to 2000 kg ha-1 . Considering the trial quality results; it was observed that there was a high rate of variation between genotypes for thousand grain weight (32.67-48.61 g), test weight (82.40-75.25 kg hl-1 ), kernel hardness (17.08-39.68), Zeleny sedimentation value (20.63-33.00 ml) and ash content (0.478% - 0.610%), respectively. While BİS-3, BİS-6, BİS-9, BİS-18, BİS-21 and BİS-22 were bestperformed lines for grain yield, BİS-3, BİS-9, BİS-11, BİS-12, BİS-13 and BİS-19 were the prominent lines for biscuit-making quality trait. It was concluded that it would be appropriate to include these lines in yield trials before registration as a variety of candidates. The present research was conducted to evaluate the M1, M2, M3 and M4 bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) mutant populations for yield and yield related traits during 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 at Tekirdağ ecological conditions. Three wheat genotypes were treated with different levels of gamma rays (100 Gy, 200 Gy, 300 Gy, 400 Gy, 500 Gy and Control). The mutated plants were evaluated along with parental lines (control) for grain yield (GY) and its contributing traits such as plant height (PH), spike length (SL), the number of spikelets per spike (NSPS), the number of grains per spike (NGPS), grain weight per spike (GWPS), harvest index (HI) and thousand grain weight (TGW) under field conditions. The results obtained from the present study showed that the genotypes significantly and variably differed in their response for various traits at different gamma rays doses. The traits such as PH, TGW and grain yield (GY) showed generally reduction with higher gamma irradiation doses as compared to low doses, while mutagenic treatments shifted the mean values mostly towards the negative direction in the other yield components. But, the negative or positive shifts were not unidirectional or equally effective for all the traits. These findings suggested that the variability could be induced through the use of gamma irradiations in bread wheat. Some of the traits showed improvement due to the induced mutations could be used in future wheat breeding programs. The differences in mean values and the nature of variability observed in M2 indicated a possible preference of selection in M3 generation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study was carried out in randomized block design with 20 advanced lines with soft grain structure by developed Eskişehir Agricultural Research Institute and 4 standard wheat genotypes in Hamidiye and Karabayır locations of Eskişehir Province in the 2014-2015 growing period. The solvent retention capacity (SRC) tests (sodium carbonate (5%), sucrose (50%), lactic acid (5%) and distilled water) and gluten performance index (GPI) were investigated for 20 lines and 4 standard varieties in the study. According to the results of the analysis of variance regarding SRC tests and GPI, the differences between the genotypes, locations and their interaction averages were found to be statistically significant. The fact that the size of the variation between locations is higher than the genotype and interaction variances indicates that there are significant differences between the locations selected for the study, and the low interaction variance shows that the locations are correctly selected for the studied genotypes and their number is sufficient. For SRC tests used in soft wheat milling and biscuit quality determination, it was determined that the genotype and location effects were greater than the genotype x location interaction effects. The mean values of genotypes ranged between 86.68% and 112.83% for lactic acid SRC, 79.95% and 89.29% for sucrose SRC, 79.52% and 94.83% for sodium carbonate SRC and 58.18% to 65.14% for water SRC. The genotypes taken into the study in terms of GPI had averages varying between 0.49 and 0.66. Considering the obtained SRC tests and GPI reference values, it was determined that BİS-19 could be the line with the best biscuit performance. The BİS-2, BİS-11, BİS-13 and BİS-16 were other promising lines for biscuit quality performances. In addition, BİS-9, BİS-17, BİS-22 and BİS-8 have been promising lines that can be evaluated in breeding studies for biscuit quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
