Search

We provide an overview of the different types of computational techniques developed over the years to study supercooled liquids, glassy materials and the physics of the glass transition. We organise these numerical strategies into four broad families. For each of them, we describe the general ideas without discussing any technical details. We summarise the type of questions which can be addressed by any given approach and outline the main results which have been obtained. Finally we describe two important directions for future computational studies of glassy systems.

Monte Carlo simulations are widely employed to measure the physical properties of glass-forming liquids in thermal equilibrium. Combined with local Monte Carlo moves, the Metropolis algorithm can also be used to simulate the relaxation dynamics, thus offering an efficient alternative to molecular dynamics. Monte Carlo simulations are, however, more versatile because carefully designed Monte Carlo algorithms can more efficiently sample the rugged free energy landscape characteristic of glassy systems. After a brief overview of Monte Carlo studies of glass-formers, we define and implement a series of Monte Carlo algorithms in a three-dimensional model of polydisperse hard spheres. We show that the standard local Metropolis algorithm is the slowest and that implementing collective moves or breaking detailed balance enhances the efficiency of the Monte Carlo sampling. We use time correlation functions to provide a microscopic interpretation of these observations. Seventy years after its invention, the Monte Carlo method remains the most efficient and versatile tool to compute low-temperature properties in supercooled liquids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Upon heating, ultrastable glassy films transform into liquids via a propagating equilibration front, resembling the heterogeneous melting of crystals. A microscopic understanding of this robust phenomenology is, however, lacking because experimental resolution is limited. We simulate the heterogeneous transformation kinetics of ultrastable configurations prepared using the swap Monte Carlo algorithm, thus allowing a direct comparison with experiments. We resolve the liquid–glass interface both in space and in time as well as the underlying particle motion responsible for its propagation. We perform a detailed statistical analysis of the interface geometry and kinetics over a broad range of temperatures. We show that the dynamic heterogeneity of the bulk liquid is passed on to the front that propagates heterogeneously in space and intermittently in time. This observation allows us to relate the averaged front velocity to the equilibrium diffusion coefficient of the liquid. We suggest that an experimental characterization of the interface geometry during the heterogeneous devitrification of ultrastable glassy films could provide direct experimental access to the long-sought characteristic length scale of dynamic heterogeneity in bulk supercooled liquids. The low-temperature quasi-universal behavior of amorphous solids has been attributed to the existence of spatially localized tunneling defects found in the low-energy regions of the potential energy landscape. Computational models of glasses can be studied to elucidate the microscopic nature of these defects. Recent simulation work has demonstrated the means of generating stable glassy configurations for models that mimic metallic glasses using the swap Monte Carlo algorithm. Building on these studies, we present an extensive exploration of the glassy metabasins of the potential energy landscape of a variant of the most widely used model of metallic glasses. We carefully identify tunneling defects and reveal their depletion with increased glass stability. We numerically study the equilibrium relaxation dynamics of a two-dimensional Mari–Kurchan glass model. The tree-like structure of particle interactions forbids both nontrivial structural motifs and the emergence of a complex free-energy landscape leading to a thermodynamic glass transition, while the finite-dimensional nature of the model prevents the existence of a mode-coupling singularity. Nevertheless, the equilibrium relaxation dynamics is shown to be in excellent agreement with simulations performed in conventional glass-formers. Averaged time correlation functions display a phenomenology typical of supercooled liquids, including the emergence of an excess signal in relaxation spectra at intermediate frequencies. We show that this evolution is accompanied by strong signatures of collective and heterogeneous dynamics that cannot be interpreted in terms of single particle hopping and emerge from dynamic facilitation. Our study demonstrates that an off-lattice interacting particle model with extremely simple structural correlations displays quantitatively realistic glassy dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose and numerically implement a local probe of the static self-induced heterogeneity characterizing glass-forming liquids. This method relies on the equilibrium statistics of the overlap between pairs of configurations measured in mesoscopic cavities with unconstrained boundaries. By systematically changing the location of the probed cavity, we directly detect spatial variations of the overlap fluctuations. We provide a detailed analysis of the statistics of a local estimate of the configurational entropy, and we infer an estimate of the surface tension between amorphous states, ingredients that are both at the basis of the random first-order transition theory of glass formation. Our results represent the first direct attempt to visualize and quantify the self-induced heterogeneity underpinning the thermodynamics of glass formation. They pave the way for the development of coarse-grained effective theories and for a direct assessment of the role of thermodynamics in the activated dynamics of deeply supercooled liquids. In a recent computer study, we have shown that the combination of spatially heterogeneous dynamics and kinetic facilitation provides a microscopic explanation for the emergence of excess wings in deeply supercooled liquids. Motivated by these findings, we construct a minimal empirical model to describe this physics and introduce dynamic facilitation in the trap model, which was initially developed to capture the thermally activated dynamics of glassy systems. We fully characterize the relaxation dynamics of this facilitated trap model varying the functional form of energy distributions and the strength of dynamic facilitation, combining numerical results and analytic arguments. Dynamic facilitation generically accelerates the relaxation of the deepest traps, thus making relaxation spectra strongly asymmetric, with an apparent "excess" signal at high frequencies. For well-chosen values of the parameters, the obtained spectra mimic experimental results for organic liquids displaying an excess wing. Overall, our results identify the minimal physical ingredients needed to describe excess processes in the relaxation spectra of supercooled liquids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The overlap, or similarity, between liquid configurations is at the core of the mean-field description of the glass transition and remains a useful concept when studying three-dimensional glass-forming liquids. In liquids, however, the overlap involves a tolerance, typically of a fraction a/σ of the inter-particle distance, associated with how precisely similar two configurations must be for belonging to the same physically relevant "state." Here, we systematically investigate the dependence of the overlap fluctuations and of the resulting phase diagram when the tolerance is varied over a large range. We show that while the location of the dynamical and thermodynamic glass transitions (if present) is independent of a/σ, that of the critical point associated with a transition between a low- and a high-overlap phase in the presence of an applied source nontrivially depends on the value of a/σ. We rationalize our findings by using liquid-state theory and the hypernetted-chain approximation for correlation functions. In addition, we confirm the theoretical trends by studying a three-dimensional glass-former by computer simulations. We show, in particular, that a range of a/σ below what is commonly considered maximizes the temperature of the critical point, pushing it up in a liquid region where viscosity is low and computer investigations are easier due to a significantly faster equilibration. The swap Monte Carlo algorithm allows the preparation of highly stable glassy configurations for a number of glass-formers but is inefficient for some models, such as the much studied binary Kob–Andersen (KA) mixture. We have recently developed generalizations to the KA model where swap can be very effective. Here, we show that these models can, in turn, be used to considerably enhance the stability of glassy configurations in the original KA model at no computational cost. We successfully develop several numerical strategies both in and out of equilibrium to achieve this goal and show how to optimize them. We provide several physical measurements indicating that the proposed algorithms considerably enhance mechanical and thermodynamic stability in the KA model, including a transition toward brittle yielding behavior. The criticality of the jamming transition responsible for amorphous solidification has been theoretically linked to the marginal stability of a thermodynamic Gardner phase. While the critical exponents of jamming appear independent of the preparation history, the pertinence of Gardner physics far from equilibrium is an open question. To fill this gap, we numerically study the nonequilibrium dynamics of hard disks compressed toward the jamming transition using a broad variety of protocols. We show that dynamic signatures of Gardner physics can be disentangled from the aging relaxation dynamics. We thus define a generic dynamic Gardner cross-over regardless of the history. Our results show that the jamming transition is always accessed by exploring increasingly complex landscape, resulting in anomalous microscopic relaxation dynamics that remains to be understood theoretically. The discovery of ultrastable glasses raises novel challenges about glassy systems. Recent experiments studied the macroscopic devitrification of ultrastable glasses into liquids upon heating but lacked microscopic resolution. We use molecular dynamics simulations to analyze the kinetics of this transformation. In the most stable systems, devitrification occurs after a very large time, but the liquid emerges in two steps. At short times, we observe the rare nucleation and slow growth of isolated droplets containing a liquid maintained under pressure by the rigidity of the surrounding glass. At large times, pressure is released after the droplets coalesce into large domains, which accelerates devitrification. This two-step process produces pronounced deviations from the classical Avrami kinetics and explains the emergence of a giant lengthscale characterizing the devitrification of bulk ultrastable glasses. Our study elucidates the nonequilibrium kinetics of glasses following a large temperature jump, which differs from both equilibrium relaxation and aging dynamics, and will guide future experimental studies. We perform stringent tests of thermodynamic theories of the glass transition over the experimentally relevant temperature regime for several simulated glass-formers. The swap Monte Carlo algorithm is used to estimate the configurational entropy and static point-to-set lengthscale, and careful extrapolations are used for the relaxation times. We first quantify the relation between configurational entropy and the point-to-set lengthscale in two and three dimensions. We then show that the Adam-Gibbs relation is generally violated in simulated models for the experimentally relevant time window. Collecting experimental data for several supercooled molecular liquids, we show that the same trends are observed experimentally. Deviations from the Adam-Gibbs relation remain compatible with random first order transition theory and may account for the reported discrepancies between Kauzmann and Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann temperatures. One of the most remarkable predictions to emerge out of the exact infinite-dimensional solution of the glass problem is the Gardner transition. Although this transition was first theoretically proposed a generation ago for certain mean-field spin glass models, its materials relevance was only realized when a systematic effort to relate glass formation and jamming was undertaken. A number of nontrivial physical signatures associated with the Gardner transition have since been considered in various areas, from models of structural glasses to constraint satisfaction problems. Despite the diversity of materials designated as active matter, virtually all active systems undergo a form of dynamic arrest when crowding and activity compete, reminiscent of the dynamic arrest observed in colloidal and molecular fluids undergoing a glass transition. We present a short perspective on recent and ongoing efforts to understand how activity competes with other physical interactions in dense systems. We review recent experimental work on active materials that uncovered both classic signatures of glassy dynamics and intriguing novel phenomena at large density. We discuss a minimal model of self-propelled particles where the competition between interparticle interactions, crowding, and self-propulsion can be studied in great detail. We present more complex models that include some additional, material-specific ingredients. We provide some general perspectives on dense active materials, suggesting directions for future research, in particular, for theoretical work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The configurational entropy is one of the most important thermodynamic quantities characterizing supercooled liquids approaching the glass transition. Despite decades of experimental, theoretical, and computational investigation, a widely accepted definition of the configurational entropy is missing, its quantitative characterization remains fraught with difficulties, misconceptions, and paradoxes, and its physical relevance is vividly debated. Motivated by recent computational progress, we offer a pedagogical perspective on the configurational entropy in glass-forming liquids. We first explain why the configurational entropy has become a key quantity to describe glassy materials, from early empirical observations to modern theoretical treatments. We explain why practical measurements necessarily require approximations that make its physical interpretation delicate. We then demonstrate that computer simulations have become an invaluable tool to obtain precise, nonambiguous, and experimentally relevant measurements of the configurational entropy. We describe a panel of available computational tools, offering for each method a critical discussion. It was recently discovered that SWAP, a Monte Carlo algorithm that involves the exchange of pairs of particles of differing diameters, can dramatically accelerate the equilibration of simulated supercooled liquids in regimes where the normal dynamics is glassy. This spectacular effect was subsequently interpreted as direct evidence against a static, cooperative explanation of the glass transition such as the one offered by the random first-order transition (RFOT) theory. We explain the speedup induced by SWAP within the framework of the RFOT theory. We suggest that the efficiency of SWAP stems from a postponed onset of glassy dynamics. We describe this effect in terms of "crumbling metastability" and use the example of nucleation to illustrate the possibility of circumventing free-energy barriers of thermodynamic origin by a change in the local dynamical rules. We propose a computational method to measure the configurational entropy in generic polydisperse glass-formers. In particular, our method resolves issues related to the diverging mixing entropy term due to a continuous polydispersity. The configurational entropy is measured as the difference between the well-defined fluid entropy and a more problematic glass entropy. We show that the glass entropy can be computed by a simple generalisation of the Frenkel-Ladd thermodynamic integration method, which takes into account permutations of the particle diameters. This approach automatically provides a physically meaningful mixing entropy for the glass entropy and includes contributions that are not purely vibrational. The proposed configurational entropy is thus devoid of conceptual and technical difficulties due to continuous polydispersity, while being conceptually closer, but technically simpler, than alternative free energy approaches. Glass is everywhere. We use and are surrounded by glass objects which make tangible the reality of glass as a distinct state of matter. Yet, glass as we know it is usually obtained by cooling a liquid sufficiently rapidly below its melting point to avoid crystallisation. The viscosity of this supercooled liquid increases by many orders of magnitude upon cooling, until the liquid becomes essentially arrested on experimental timescales below the 'glass transition' temperature. From a structural viewpoint, the obtained glass still very much resembles the disordered liquid, but from a mechanical viewpoint, it is as rigid as an ordered crystal. Does glass qualify as a separate state of matter? We provide a pedagogical perspective on this question using basic statistical mechanical concepts. We recall the definitions of states of matt er and of phase transitions between them. We review recent theoretical results suggesting why and how an 'ideal glass' can indeed be defined as a separate equilibrium state of matt er. We discuss recent success of computer simulations trying to analyse this glass state. We close with some experimental perspectives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We discuss the microscopic mechanisms by which low-temperature amorphous states, such as ultrastable glasses, transform into equilibrium fluids, after a sudden temperature increase. Experiments suggest that this process is similar to the melting of crystals, thus differing from the behaviour found in ordinary glasses. We rationalize these observations using the physical idea that the transformation process takes place close to a "hidden" equilibrium first-order phase transition, which is observed in systems of coupled replicas. We illustrate our views using simulation results for a simple two-dimensional plaquette spin model, which is known to exhibit a range of glassy behaviour. Our results suggest that nucleation-and-growth dynamics, as found near ordinary first-order transitions, is also the correct theoretical framework to analyse the melting of ultrastable glasses. Our approach provides a unified understanding of multiple experimental observations, such as propagating melting fronts, large kinetic stability ratios, and "giant" dynamic length scales. Cavity point-to-set correlations are real-space tools to detect the roughening of the free-energy landscape that accompanies the dynamical slowdown of glass-forming liquids. Measuring these correlations in model glass formers remains, however, a major computational challenge. Here, we develop a general parallel-tempering method that provides orders-of-magnitude improvement for sampling and equilibrating configurations within cavities. We apply this improved scheme to the canonical Kob-Andersen binary Lennard-Jones model for temperatures down to the mode-coupling theory crossover. Most significant improvements are noted for small cavities, which have thus far been the most difficult to study. This methodological advance also enables us to study a broader range of physical observables associated with thermodynamic fluctuations. We measure the probability distribution of overlap fluctuations in cavities, which displays a non-trivial temperature evolution. The corresponding overlap susceptibility is found to provide a robust quantitative estimate of the point-to-set length scale requiring no fitting. By resolving spatial fluctuations of the overlap in the cavity, we also obtain quantitative information about the geometry of overlap fluctuations. Ultrastable glasses have risen to prominence due to their potentially useful material properties and the tantalizing possibility of a general method of preparation via vapor deposition. Despite the importance of this novel class of amorphous materials, numerical studies have been scarce because achieving ultrastability in atomistic simulations is an enormous challenge. Here, we bypass this difficulty and establish that randomly pinning the position of a small fraction of particles inside an equilibrated supercooled liquid generates ultrastable configurations at essentially no numerical cost, while avoiding undesired structural changes due to the preparation protocol. Building on the analogy with vapor-deposited ultrastable glasses, we study the melting kinetics of these configurations following a sudden temperature jump into the liquid phase. In homogeneous geometries, we find that enhanced kinetic stability is accompanied by large scale dynamic heterogeneity, while a competition between homogeneous and heterogeneous melting is observed when a liquid boundary invades the glass at constant velocity. We use large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of a simple glass-forming system to investigate how its liquid-gas phase separation kinetics depends on temperature. A shallow quench leads to a fully demixed liquid-gas system whereas a deep quench makes the dense phase undergo a glass transition and become an amorphous solid. This glass has a gel-like bicontinuous structure that evolves very slowly with time and becomes fully arrested in the limit where thermal fluctuations become negligible. We show that the phase separation kinetics changes qualitatively with temperature, the microscopic dynamics evolving from a surface tension-driven diffusive motion at high temperature to a strongly intermittent, heterogeneous, and thermally activated dynamics at low temperature, with a logarithmically slow growth of the typical domain size. We present evidence from computer simulation that the slowdown of relaxation of a standard Lennard-Jones glass-forming liquid and that of its reduction to a model with truncated pair potentials without attractive tails are quantitatively and qualitatively different in the viscous regime. The pair structure of the two models is however very similar. This finding, which appears to contradict the common view that the physics of dense liquids is dominated by the steep repulsive forces between atoms, is characterized in detail, and its consequences are explored. Beyond the role of attractive forces themselves, a key aspect in explaining the differences in the dynamical behavior of the two models is the truncation of the interaction potentials beyond a cutoff at typical interatomic distance. We use replica exchange Monte Carlo simulations to measure the equilibrium equation of state of the disordered fluid state for a binary hard sphere mixture up to very large densities where standard Monte Carlo simulations do not easily reach thermal equilibrium. For the moderate system sizes we use (up to N = 100), we find no sign of a pressure discontinuity near the location of dynamic glass singularities extrapolated using either algebraic or simple exponential divergences, suggesting they do not correspond to genuine thermodynamic glass transitions. We show that finite-range alternatives to the standard long-range pair potential for silica by van Beest et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 64, 1955 (1990)] might be used in molecular dynamics simulations. We study two such models that can be efficiently simulated since no Ewald summation is required. We first consider the Wolf method, where the Coulomb interactions are truncated at a cutoff distance rc such that the requirement of charge neutrality holds. Various static and dynamic quantities are computed and compared to results from simulations using Ewald summations. We find very good agreement for rc≈10 Å. For lower values of rc, the long-range structure is affected which is accompanied by a slight acceleration of dynamic properties. In a second approach, the Coulomb interaction is replaced by an effective Yukawa interaction with two new parameters determined by a force fitting procedure. The same trend as for the Wolf method is seen. However, slightly larger cutoffs have to be used in order to obtain the same accuracy with respect to static and dynamic quantities as for the Wolf method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We show that the dynamics between inherent structures in glassforming systems can be understood in purely dynamical terms, without any reference to “topographic” features of the potential energy landscape. This “nontopographic” interpretation is based instead on the existence of dynamical heterogeneities and on their statistical properties. Our view is supported by the study of simple dynamically facilitated models of glassformers. The nonequilibrium dynamics of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture in a simple shear flow is investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The range of temperature T investigated covers both the liquid, supercooled, and glassy states, while the shear rate γ covers both the linear and nonlinear regimes of rheology. The results can be interpreted in the context of a nonequilibrium, schematic mode-coupling theory developed recently, which makes the theory applicable to a wide range of soft glassy materials. The behavior of the viscosity η(T, γ) is first investigated. In the nonlinear regime, strong shear-thinning is obtained, η∼γ[sup -α(T)], with α(T)...⅔ in the supercooled regime. Scaling properties of the intermediate scattering functions are studied. Standard "mode-coupling properties" of factorization and time superposition hold in this nonequilibrium situation. The fluctuation-dissipation relation is violated in the shear flow in a way very similar to that predicted theoretically, allowing for the definition of an effective temperature T[sub eff] for the slow modes of the fluid. Temperature and shear rate dependencies of T[sub eff] are studied using density fluctuations as an observable. The observable dependence of T[sub eff] is also investigated. Many different observables are found to lead to the same value of T[sub eff], suggesting several experimental procedures to access T[sub eff]. It is proposed that a tracer particle of large mass m[sub tr] may play the role of an "effective thermometer." When the Einstein frequency of the tracers becomes smaller than the inverse 〈m[sub tr]ν²[sub z]〉 = k[sub B]T[sub eff], relaxation time of the fluid, a nonequilibrium equipartition theorem holds with where ν[sub z] is the velocity in the direction transverse to the flow. A numerical study of the north-or-east-or-front (NEF) model, the three dimensional generalization of the east facilitated spin model is presented. The equilibrium dynamics of the NEF model through measurements of alpha-relaxation time scales, distributions of relaxation times, and the growth of dynamic correlation lengths and four-point susceptibilities are described.

We combine an analytically solvable mean-field elasto-plastic model with molecular dynamics simulations of a generic glass former to demonstrate that, depending on their preparation protocol, amorphous materials can yield in two qualitatively distinct ways. We show that well-annealed systems yield in a discontinuous brittle way, as metallic and molecular glasses do. Yielding corresponds in this case to a first-order nonequilibrium phase transition. As the degree of annealing decreases, the first-order character becomes weaker and the transition terminates in a second-order critical point in the universality class of an Ising model in a random field. For even more poorly annealed systems, yielding becomes a smooth crossover, representative of the ductile rheological behavior generically observed in foams, emulsions, and colloidal glasses. Our results show that the variety of yielding behaviors found in amorphous materials does not necessarily result from the diversity of particle interactions or microscopic dynamics but is instead unified by carefully considering the role of the initial stability of the system. Dense assemblies of self-propelled particles undergo a nonequilibrium form of glassy dynamics. Physical intuition suggests that increasing departure from equilibrium due to active forces fluidifies a glassy system.Wefalsify this belief by devising a model of self-propelled particles where increasing departure from equilibrium can both enhance or depress glassy dynamics, depending on the chosen state point.Weanalyze a number of static and dynamic observables and suggest that the location of the nonequilibrium glass transition is primarily controlled by the evolution of two-point static density correlations due to active forces. The dependence of the density correlations on the active forces varies non-trivially with the details of the system, and is difficult to predict theoretically.
