The effects of pressure drop across cardiac valve cushion regions and endocardial wall strain in the early developmental stages of a teleost species heart are poorly understood. In the presented work, we utilize microscale particle image velocimetry (μPIV) flow measurements of developing medaka hearts from 3 to 14 dpf (n = 5 at each dpf) to quantify the pressure field and endocardial wall strain. Peak pressure drop at the atrioventricular canal (ΔPAVC) and outflow tract (ΔPOFT) show a steady increase with fish age progression. Pressure drops when non-dimensionalized with blood viscosity and heart rate at each dpf are comparable with measurements in zebrafish hearts. Retrograde flows captured at these regions display a negative pressure drop. A novel metric, Endocardial Work (EW), is introduced by analyzing the ΔPAVC-strain curves, which is a non-invasive measure of work required for ventricle filling. Many accretion-powered pulsars rotate in magnetocentrifugal disequilibrium, spinning up or down secularly over multiyear intervals. The magnetic dipole moment μ of such systems cannot be inferred uniquely from the time-averaged aperiodic X-ray flux 〈 L (t)〉 and pulse period 〈 P (t)〉, because the radiative efficiency of the accretion is unknown and degenerate with the mass accretion rate. Here, we circumvent the degeneracy by tracking the fluctuations in the unaveraged time series L (t) and P (t) using an unscented Kalman filter, whereupon μ can be estimated uniquely, up to the uncertainties in the mass, radius, and distance of the star. The analysis is performed on Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations for 24 X-ray transients in the Small Magellanic Cloud, which have been monitored regularly for ∼16 yr. As well as independent estimates of μ, the analysis yields time-resolved histories of the mass accretion rate and the Maxwell stress at the disk–magnetosphere boundary for each star, and hence auto- and cross-correlations involving the latter two state variables. Measuring particles' three-dimensional (3D) positions using multi-camera images in fluid dynamics is critical for resolving spatiotemporally complex flows like turbulence and mixing. However, current methods are prone to errors due to camera noise, optical configuration and experimental setup limitations, and high seeding density, which compound to create fake measurements (ghost particles) and add noise and error to velocity estimations. We introduce a Bayesian volumetric reconstruction (BVR) method, addressing these challenges by using probability theory to estimate uncertainties in particle position predictions. Our method assumes a uniform distribution of particles within the reconstruction volume and employs a model mapping particle positions to observed camera images. We utilize variational inference with a modified loss function to determine the posterior distribution over particle positions. Key features include a penalty term to reduce ghost particles, provision of uncertainty bounds, and scalability through subsampling. In tests with synthetic data and four cameras, BVR achieved 95% accuracy with less than 3% ghost particles and an RMS error under 0.3 pixels at a density of 0.1 particles per pixel. In an experimental Poiseuille flow measurement, our method closely matched the theoretical solution. Additionally, in a complex cerebral aneurysm basilar tip geometry flow experiment, our reconstructions were dense and consistent with observed flow patterns. Our BVR method effectively reconstructs particle positions in complex 3D flows, particularly in situations with high particle image densities and camera distortions. It distinguishes itself by providing quantifiable uncertainty estimates and scaling efficiently for larger image dimensions, making it applicable across a range of fluid flow scenarios. The magnetic dipole moment μ of an accretion-powered pulsar in magnetocentrifugal equilibrium cannot be inferred uniquely from time-averaged pulse period and aperiodic X-ray flux data, because the radiative efficiency η 0 of the accretion is unknown, as are the mass, radius, and distance of the star. The degeneracy associated with the radiative efficiency is circumvented if fluctuations of the pulse period and aperiodic X-ray flux are tracked with a Kalman filter, whereupon μ can be measured uniquely up to the uncertainties in the mass, radius, and distance. Here, the Kalman filter analysis is demonstrated successfully in practice for the first time on Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of the X-ray transient SXP 18.3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), which is monitored regularly. The analysis yields μ = 8.0 − 1.2 + 1.3 × 10 30 G cm 3 and η 0 = 0.04 − 0.01 + 0.02 , compared to μ = 5.0 − 1.0 + 1.0 × 10 30 G cm 3 as inferred traditionally from time-averaged data assuming η 0 = 1. The analysis also yields time-resolved estimates of two hidden state variables, the mass accretion rate and the Maxwell stress at the disk–magnetosphere boundary. The success of the demonstration confirms that the Kalman filter analysis can be applied in the future to study the magnetic moments and disk–magnetosphere physics of accretion-powered pulsar populations in the SMC and elsewhere. Singlet fission (SF) and its inverse, triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA), are promising strategies for enhancing photovoltaic efficiencies. However, detailed descriptions of the processes of SF/TTA are not fully understood, even in the most well-studied systems. Reports of the photophysics of crystalline rubrene, for example, are often inconsistent. Here we attempt to resolve these inconsistencies using time-resolved photoluminescence and transient absorption spectroscopy of 'pristine' rubrene orthorhombic single crystals. We find the reported time-resolved photoluminescence behaviour that hinted at triplet-pair emission is found only at specific sites on the crystals and likely arises from surface defects. Using transient absorption spectroscopy of the same crystals, we also observe no evidence of instantaneous generation of triplet-pair population with ∼100 fs excitation, independent of excitation wavelength (532 nm, 495 nm) or excitation angle. Our results suggest that SF occurs incoherently on a relatively slow (picosecond) timescale in rubrene single crystals, as expected from the original theoretical calculations. X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs) allow the collection of high-quality serial femtosecond crystallography data. The next generation of megahertz superconducting FELs promises to drastically reduce data collection times, enabling the capture of more structures with higher signal-to-noise ratios and facilitating more complex experiments. Currently, gas dynamic virtual nozzles (GDVNs) stand as the sole delivery method capable of best utilizing the repetition rate of megahertz sources for crystallography. However, their substantial sample consumption renders their use impractical for many protein targets in serial crystallography experiments. Here, we present a novel application of a droplet-on-demand injection method, which allowed operation at 47 kHz at the European XFEL (EuXFEL) by tailoring a multi-droplet injection scheme for each macro-pulse. We demonstrate a collection rate of 150 000 indexed patterns per hour. We show that the performance and effective data collection rate are comparable to GDVN, with a sample consumption reduction of two orders of magnitude. We present lysozyme crystallographic data using the Large Pixel Detector at the femtosecond x-ray experiment endstation. Significant improvement of the crystallographic statistics was made by correcting for a systematic drift of the photon energy in the EuXFEL macro-pulse train, which was characterized from indexing the individual frames in the pulse train. We present a statistical analysis of the He  ii 4686 emission line in the spectra of the black hole and Wolf–Rayet (WR) star of the high-mass X-ray binary IC10 X-1. This line is visibly skewed, and the third moment (skewness) varies with the binary's orbital phase. We describe a new method of extracting such weak/faint features lying barely above a noisy continuum. Using the moments of these features, we have been able to decompose these skewed lines into two symmetric Gaussian profiles as a function of the orbital phase. The astrophysical implications of this decomposition are significant due to the complex nature of wind–accretion stream interactions in such binary systems. Previous studies have already shown a 0.25 phase lag in the radial velocity curve of the star and the X-ray eclipse, which indicates that the He  ii emitters might be in the stellar wind, hence not tracing the star's orbital motion. Results from this work further suggest the existence of two separate emitting regions, one in the stellar wind in the shadow of the WR star and another in the accretion stream that impacts the black hole's outer accretion disc; and the observed skewed He  ii lines can be reproduced by superposition of the two corresponding time-dependent Gaussian emission profiles. The synergistic effect of zinc selenide (ZnSe) nanoparticle functionalized into reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets on nonlinear optical (NLO) properties has been investigated by single beam z-scan technique. Comprehensive measurements on nonlinear absorption (NLA) as well as nonlinear refraction (NLR) have been performed on RGO, ZnSe, and RGO-ZnSe composites at 630 nm in the femtosecond regime. Both NLA and NLR of RGO-ZnSe show an enhancement in NLO properties compared to pure RGO and ZnSe in an intensity range of 37 GW / cm 2 to 130 GW / cm 2. The enhanced optical nonlinearity of RGO-ZnSe may have been caused due to strong interlayer coupling between RGO and ZnSe, as well as the availability of a large number of NLA states in the composite. The interlayer coupling between ZnSe nanoparticles and RGO sheets has been confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, UV-Visible, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. At low input pulse intensity (∼ 37 GW / cm 2), saturation absorption dominates, whereas NLA becomes prominent in the higher intensity regime (55 GW / cm 2 – 130 GW / cm 2) for RGO and ZnSe. NLA is the dominant phenomenon for RGO-ZnSe in the whole experimental intensity range. Moreover, it is observed that the dispersion of RGO, ZnSe, and RGO-ZnSe in dimethylformamide exhibits positive NLR. This study indicates an enhancement in nonlinear optical response of the RGO-semiconductor composite, which is very promising for graphene based photonic device applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work models the effects of gravitational lensing, Doppler boosting, and ellipsoidal variations on eccentric eclipsing binary-system light curves. This is accomplished using a Newtonian orbital-motion code that simulates the orbital velocities and separation of the binary components as a function of time. Improving on previous literature, we examine the effects of orbital eccentricity and period, as well as stellar limb darkening on the expected light curves. Whether lensing, Doppler boosting, or ellipsoidal variation is dominant in the light curves is a function of the separation between the binary components; thus, the combination of all three effects allows for a unique mass-determination method that greatly expands the parameter space for the discovery of compact objects. This suggests the exciting possibility of revealing a large population of nonaccreting compact objects in galactic binary systems. At the same time, the model can be used on systems exhibiting any subset of these effects. In a case study, we fit our model to optical data from the ellipsoidal variable binary system Cygnus X-1, and we compare our determinations with those previously found by different modeling techniques. One of the brightest X-ray pulsars in the Small Magellanic Cloud is SMC X-2. During its most recent major outburst in 2015, this transient pulsar displayed significant changes in both its accretion state and magnetosphere, particularly when it entered the low-luminosity regime of subcritical accretion. Polestar is a pulse-profile modeling code that helps in delineating the geometry of the emission as the source evolves past outburst and toward lower-luminosity states. Applying Polestar to XMM-Newton and NuSTAR pulse profiles, we constrained the most likely inclination of the spin axis of the pulsar to be i = 87° ± 4°. As the X-ray luminosity declined, an increase in the pulsed fraction was detected from Swift observations, which suggests a transition from fan- to pencil-beam emission during the later stages of the outburst. It is well‐known that treatment of β‐octaethylporphyrin with H2O2/conc. H2SO4 converts it to a β‐oxochlorin as well as all five constitutional isomers of the corresponding β,β'‐dioxo‐derivatives: two bacteriochlorin‐type isomers (β‐oxo groups at opposite pyrrolic building blocks) and three isobacteriochlorin‐type isomers (β‐oxo‐groups at adjacent pyrrolic building blocks). By virtue of the presence of the strongly electronically coupled β‐oxo auxochromes, none of the chromophores are archetypical chlorins, bacteriochlorins, or isobacteriochlorins. Here the authors present, inter alia, the single crystal X‐ray structures of all free‐base diketone isomers and a comparative description of their UV‐vis absorption spectra in neutral and acidic solutions, and fluorescence emission and singlet oxygen photosensitization properties, Magnetic Circular Dichroism (MCD) spectra, and singlet excited state lifetimes. DFT computations uncover underlying tautomeric equilibria and electronic interactions controlling their electronic properties, adding to the understanding of porphyrinoids carrying β‐oxo functionalities. Uncertainty quantification for particle image velocimetry (PIV) is critical for comparing experimentally measured flow fields with computational fluid dynamics results, and model design and validation. However, PIV features a complex measurement chain with coupled, non-linear error sources, and quantifying the uncertainty is challenging. Multiple assessments show that none of the current methods can reliably measure the actual uncertainty across a wide range of experiments, and estimates can vary. Because the current methods differ in assumptions regarding the measurement process and calculation procedures, it is not clear which method is best to use for an experiment where the error distribution is unknown. To address this issue, we propose a method to estimate an uncertainty method's sensitivity and reliability, termed the Meta-Uncertainty. The novel approach is automated, local, and instantaneous, and based on perturbation of the recorded particle images. We developed an image perturbation scheme based on adding random unmatched particles to the interrogation window pair considering the signal-to-noise of the correlation plane. Each uncertainty scheme's response to several trials of random particle addition is used to estimate a reliability metric, defined as the rate of change of the inter-quartile range of the uncertainties with increasing levels of particle addition. We also propose applying the meta-uncertainty as a weighting metric to combine uncertainty estimates from individual schemes, based on ideas from the consensus forecasting literature. We use planar and stereo PIV measurements across a range of canonical flows to assess the performance of the uncertainty schemes. Further, a novel method is introduced to assess an uncertainty scheme's performance based on a quantile comparison of the error and uncertainty distributions, generalizing the current method of comparing the RMS of the two distributions. The results show that the combined uncertainty method outperforms the individual methods, and this work establishes the meta-uncertainty as a useful reliability assessment tool for PIV uncertainty quantification. Abstract Introduction Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare familial disorder characterised by mucocutaneous pigmentation, gastrointestinal and extragastrointestinal hamartomatous polyps and an increased risk of malignancy. Peutz-Jeghers polyps in the bowel may result in intussusception. This complication usually manifests with abdominal pain and signs of intestinal obstruction. Case Presentation We report the case of a 24-year-old Caucasian male who presented with melaena. Pigmentation of the buccal mucosa was noted but he was pain-free and examination of the abdomen was unremarkable. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed multiple polyps. An urgent abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed multiple small bowel intussusceptions. Laparotomy was undertaken on our patient, reducing the intussusceptions and removing the polyps by enterotomies. Bowel resection was not needed. Conclusion Melaena in PJS needs to be urgently investigated through a CT scan even in the absence of abdominal pain and when clinical examination of the abdomen shows normal findings. Although rare, the underlying cause could be intussusception, which if missed could result in grave consequences.

We present new X-ray and UV observations of the Wolf–Rayet + black hole (BH) binary system NGC 300 X-1 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. When combined with archival X-ray observations, our X-ray and UV observations sample the entire binary orbit, providing clues to the system geometry and interaction between the BH accretion disk and the donor star wind. We measure a binary orbital period of 32.7921 ± 0.0003 hr, in agreement with previous studies, and perform phase-resolved spectroscopy using the X-ray data. The X-ray light curve reveals a deep eclipse, consistent with inclination angles of i = 60°–75°, and a pre-eclipse excess consistent with an accretion stream impacting the disk edge. We further measure radial velocity variations for several prominent far-UV spectral lines, most notably H ii λ1640 and C iv λ1550. We find that the He ii emission lines systematically lag the expected Wolf–Rayet star orbital motion by a phase difference of Δϕ ∼ 0.3, while C iv λ1550 matches the phase of the anticipated radial velocity curve of the Wolf–Rayet donor. We assume the C iv λ1550 emission line follows a sinusoidal radial velocity curve (semi-amplitude = 250 km s−1) and infer a BH mass of 17 ± 4 M⊙. Our observations are consistent with the presence of a wind-Roche lobe overflow accretion disk, where an accretion stream forms from gravitationally focused wind material and impacts the edge of the BH accretion disk. The spontaneous dissolution of 2D polytriazine imide (PTI) carbon nitrides in certain solvents diverges dramatically from the inherent insolubility of other 2D materials such as graphene. Here, the mechanism of dissolution and underlying factors which govern PTI solubility are probed, uncovering a complex and adaptable system. At high concentrations, multi-layered species are co-dissolved, and these solubilised stacks may be further exfoliated to few- or single-layer species with the addition of water. While the PTI sheets are fundamentally soluble, the presence of intercalated lithium salts increases yield and improves the degree of exfoliation, with lithium cations adsorbed on the solvated PTI layers. Piper capense belongs to Piperaceae family and has long been used as a traditional medicine to treat various diseases in several parts of Africa. The present study aims to investigate the effect of Piper capense fruit extract (PCFE) alone and in combination with dacarbazine on metastatic melanoma cell line B16-F10 and in vivo in C57BL/6J mice. Cytotoxic effects of PCFE alone and in association with dacarbazine on B16-F10 cells were studied by 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and colony formation assay. Wound healing assay, immunofluorescence staining, and western blot analysis were performed to evaluate the individual and combined effect of PCFE and dacarbazine on epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). For in vivo studies, C57BL/6J mice were subcutaneously injected with B16-F10 cells (5 × 105 cells/mL), and the effect of PCFE and dacarbazine was studied on tumor development. The alteration of EMT was evaluated by targeting E-cadherin, vimentin, and CD133 in PCFE alone and in combination with dacarbazine-treated tumor tissues by western blot analysis. Phytochemical screening of PCFE reveals the presence of certain secondary metabolites. Our results showed that PCFE alone and in association with dacarbazine has a good activity in preventing B16-F10 melanoma cell progression and clonogenicity. This extract also regulated EMT. In vivo results showed that PCFE (100 mg/kg body weight) reduced tumor size in C57BL/6J mice along with the decrease in the expression of vasculogenic mimicry (VM) tubes as well as an improvement in the qualitative and quantitative expression of markers involved in EMT. Abstract Introduction A duodenal Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour (GIST) is a rare finding and until recently advanced disease had a poor prognosis. A PubMed search revealed no reports of more than five years survival of inoperable GIST on chemotherapy with WHO performance status zero. Case Presentation A 68 year old female was diagnosed with unresectable GIST in the duodenum with metastasis to liver, pancreas and omentum in November 2001. She was commenced on imatinib mesylate (Glivec) chemotherapy. This case report was prepared from the medical records and radiology reports. She had good tolerance with stable disease. After six years her CT scan showed no disease progression and her WHO performance status was zero. Conclusion This report supports the view that imatinib is a safe and effective drug in controlling disease progression in advanced metastatic GIST and plays an important role in improving the patient's quality of life.

A novel pressure reconstruction method is proposed to use the uncertainty information to improve the instantaneous pressure fields from velocity fields measured using particle image velocimetry (PIV) or particle tracking velocimetry (PTV). First, the pressure gradient fields are calculated from velocity fields, while the local and instantaneous pressure gradient uncertainty is estimated from the velocity uncertainty using a linear-transformation-based algorithm. The pressure field is then reconstructed by solving an overdetermined linear system which involves the pressure gradients and boundary conditions. This linear system is solved with generalized least squares (GLS) which incorporates the previously estimated variances and covariances of the pressure gradient errors as inverse weights to optimize the reconstructed pressure field. The method was validated with synthetic velocity fields of a 2D pulsatile flow, and the results show significantly improved pressure accuracy. The pressure error reduction by GLS was 50% with 9.6% velocity errors and 250% with 32.1% velocity errors compared to the existing baseline method of solving the pressure Poisson equation (PPE). The GLS was more robust to the velocity errors and provides greater improvement with spatially correlated velocity errors. For experimental validation, the volumetric pressure fields were evaluated from the velocity fields measured using 3D PTV of a laminar pipe flow with a Reynolds number of 630 and a transitional pipe flow with a Reynolds number of 3447. The GLS reduced the median absolute pressure errors by as much as 96% for the laminar pipe flow compared to PPE. The mean pressure drop along the pipe predicted by GLS was in good agreement with the empirical estimation using Darcy–Weisbach equation for the transitional pipe flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we depleted glutathione (GSH) by releasing SO2 with internal stimulus GSH itself, and also selectively marked the cancer cells followed by release of anticancer drug using another orthogonal stimulus i.e., two-photon (TP) NIR light by a single naphthalene based chromophore (TP absorbance 77 GM and uncaging cross-section 21 GM). We demonstrated the improved therapeutic efficacy of chlorambucil by the stepwise dual stimuli approach and dual surveillance of both the drug uncaging process in real-time using in vitro studies. Inducements for research participants are considered controversial. Researchers face an ethical dilemma if they offer money as an inducement when enrolling volunteers for their study. Do these payments invalidate the consent process and make this unethical? Should the results of such studies be considered invalid? A recent publication by Persad and colleagues supports differential payment to volunteers, based upon their level of involvement, from an ethical perspective. Nonintrusive measurement techniques such as particle image velocimetry (PIV) are growing in both capability and utility for turbomachinery applications. However, the restrictive optical access afforded by multistage research compressors typically requires the use of a periscope probe to introduce the laser sheet for measurements in a rotor passage. This paper demonstrates the capability to perform three-dimensional PIV in a multistage compressor without the need for intrusive optical probes and requiring only line-of-sight optical access. The results collected from the embedded second stage of a three-stage axial compressor highlight the rotor tip leakage flow, and PIV measurements are qualitatively compared with high-frequency response piezoresistive pressure measurements to assess the tip leakage flow identification. Raman spectroscopy and Hall measurements have been carried out to investigate the differences in near-surface charge carrier modulation in high energy (~100 MeV) silicon ion (Si8+) and oxygen ion (O7+) irradiated n-GaAs. In the case of O ion irradiation, the observed decrease in carrier concentration with increase in ion fluence could be explained in the view of charge compensation by possible point defect trap centers, which can form because of elastic collisions of high energy ions with the target nuclei. In Si irradiated n-GaAs one would expect the carrier compensation to occur at a fluence of 2.5 × 1013 ions/cm2, if the same mechanism of acceptor state formation, as in case of O irradiation, is considered. However, we observe the charge compensation in this system at a fluence of 5 × 1012 ions/cm2. We discuss the role of the complex defect states, which are formed because of the interaction of the primary point defects, in determining carrier concentration in a Si irradiated n-GaAs wafer. The above results are combined with the reported data from the literature for high energy silver ion irradiated n-GaAs, in order to illustrate the effect of both electronic and nuclear energy loss on trap creation and charge compensation. This complication usually manifests with abdominal pain and signs of intestinal obstruction.Case Presentation: We report the case of a 24-year-old Caucasian male who presented with melaena. Pigmentation of the buccal mucosa was noted but he was pain-free and examination of the abdomen was unremarkable. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed multiple polyps. An urgent abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed multiple small bowel intussusceptions. Laparotomy was undertaken on our patient, reducing the intussusceptions and removing the polyps by enterotomies. Bowel resection was not needed.Conclusion: Melaena in PJS needs to be urgently investigated through a CT scan even in the absence of abdominal pain and when clinical examination of the abdomen shows normal findings. Although rare, the underlying cause could be intussusception, which if missed could result in grave consequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article offers information on dilemmas faced by health professionals surrounding life-sustaining treatment. Topics discussed include information on lack of evidence that life-sustaining treatment would be effective; need for medical fraternity to keep a more open mind with regard to treatment option; and need for health professional to take adequate measures where ‘right to life’ is at risk.

We carry out a meta-analysis of ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) sources that show large variabilities (by factors of > 10 ) between their highest and lowest emission states in the X-ray energy range of 0.3–10 keV. We are guided by a recent stringent compilation of 25 such X-ray sources by Song et al. We examine the relation of log N versus log S max , where N is the number of sources radiating above the maximum-flux level S max . We find a strong deviation from all previously determined slopes in various high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) samples. In fact, the ULX data clearly show a slope of − 0.91 . Thus, ULX sources do not appear to be uniform and isotropic in our Universe. We compare the ULX results against the local X-ray luminosity function of HMXBs in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) constructed from our latest library that includes 41 Chandra 0.3–8 keV sources and 56 XMM-Newton 0.2–12 keV sources. The ULX data are not drawn from the same continuous distribution as the SMC data (the ULX data peak at the low tails of the SMC distributions), and none of our data sets is drawn from a normal distribution or from a log-normal distribution (they all show marked excesses at both tails). At a significance level of α = 0.05 ( 2 σ ), the two-sample p-value of the Kolmogorov–Smirnov (KS) test gives p = 4.7 × 10 − 3 < α for the ULX versus the small Chandra sample and p = 1.1 × 10 − 5 < < α for the ULX versus the larger XMM-Newton sample, respectively. This adds to the evidence that ULX sources are not simply the higher end of the known local Be/X-ray pulsar distribution, but they represent a class of X-ray sources different from the young sources found in the SMC and in individual starburst galaxies. On the other hand, our two main SMC data sets are found to be statistically consistent, as they are drawn from the same continuous parent distribution (null hypothesis H 0 ): at the α = 0.05 significance level, the two-sample KS test shows an asymptotic p-value of 0.308 > α , which tells us to accept H 0 . Peptic oesophageal stricture can be considered as the end result of prolonged gastro-oesophageal reflux. The 'gold standard' treatment for peptic stricture is endoscopic dilatation with balloon or bougie. It is predicted that up to 40% of patients remain symptomatic with dysphagia due to refractory (resistant to treatment) or recurrent strictures, needing frequent interventions at short intervals. Such patients have poor nutritional status due to the primary disease and are susceptible to complications related to repeated endoscopic dilatation such as bleeding and perforation. This general review aims to analyse existing published evidence and address the role of biodegradable stents in resistant peptic strictures as an alternative treatment to provide long-term dysphagia-free intervals. Femtosecond (fs) laser excited second harmonic (SH) and multiphoton absorption (MPA) induced UV luminescence generation behaviour of Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofibers is reported here. The used nanofibers are grown by seed assisted chemical bath deposition technology over glass substrates and are excited by a near-infrared (NIR) Ti: Sapphire laser emitting pulses of wavelength 812 nm and duration 100 fs. The peak wavelength of SH and MPA induced UV luminescence signals are found to be 406 nm and 398 nm respectively. Due to good optical quality, no defect level related MPA induced visible luminescence is observed in nanofibers. In comparison to this, ZnO nanostructures grown over plane substrate without seed layer shows very less SH and MPA induced UV luminescence. However in this case, the defect level related MPA induced visible luminescence was found to be very high. Applications like ultrafast pulse diagnostics, NIR induced photodynamic therapy etc. require high SH and MPA induced UV luminescence and low defect level related visible luminescence. It is well-known that treatment of β-octaethylporphyrin with H 2 O 2 /conc. H 2 SO 4 converts it to a β-oxochlorin as well as all five constitutional isomers of the corresponding β,β'-dioxo-derivatives: two bacteriochlorin-type isomers (β-oxo groups at opposite pyrrolic building blocks) and three isobacteriochlorin-type isomers (β-oxo-groups at adjacent pyrrolic building blocks). By virtue of the presence of the strongly electronically coupled β-oxo auxochromes, none of the chromophores are archetypical chlorins, bacteriochlorins, or isobacteriochlorins. Here the authors present, inter alia, the single crystal X-ray structures of all free-base diketone isomers and a comparative description of their UV-vis absorption spectra in neutral and acidic solutions, and fluorescence emission and singlet oxygen photosensitization properties, Magnetic Circular Dichroism (MCD) spectra, and singlet excited state lifetimes. DFT computations uncover underlying tautomeric equilibria and electronic interactions controlling their electronic properties, adding to the understanding of porphyrinoids carrying β-oxo functionalities.
