Abstract Auxetic metamaterials are a unique class of materials or structures with a negative Poisson’s ratio and a wide array of functionalities. However, their inherent porosity presents challenges in practical applications. Filling the inherent perforations while preserving their unique auxeticity is difficult because it demands the seamless integration of components that have highly distinct mechanical characteristics. Here we introduce a seamless auxetic substrate film capable of achieving a negative Poisson’s ratio of −1, the theoretical limit of isotropic materials. This breakthrough is realized by incorporating a highly rigid auxetic structure reinforced by glass-fabric, with surface-flattening soft elastomers. We effectively optimize the mechanical properties of these components by systematic experimental and theoretical investigations into the effects of relative differences in the moduli of the constituents. Using the developed auxetic film we demonstrate an image distortion-free display having 25 PPI resolution of micro-LEDs that is capable of 25% stretching without performance degradation.

Abstract Transparent displays are crucial for various applications, particularly for their potential use as windows in future self‐driving cars. These displays require high transparency, low power consumption, and high mechanical reliability. Micro‐LEDs have emerged as ideal devices for the transparent displays. Efficient mass‐production processes are essential for the commercialization of transparent micro‐LED displays. This study presents roll‐based mass transfer to enhance the productivity of transparent micro‐LED displays. Roll transfer processes traditionally face resolution challenges in alignment repeatability and positional errors in both the transverse direction (TD) and machine direction (MD). This study proposes a roll‐to‐plate (R2P) transfer process with overlay alignment to improve the repeatability precision of the alignment. Detailed experimental analyses address positional errors in the TD and MD, attributed to initial contact errors and linear velocity asynchrony, respectively. The results demonstrate successful micro‐LED transfer onto a transparent circuit board (TCB) with a maximum positional error of 3.2 µm and a 99.75% yield. The resulting micro‐LED display achieves a transparency of 72.5% with 68 pixels per inch. This study overcomes the alignment challenges in the R2P process and contributes to the commercialization of transparent micro‐LED displays. It is expected to positively impact the manufacturing of transparent applications that involve rolling processes.

Abstract In this paper, we successfully fabricated color conversion layers (CCLs) for full-color-mico-LED display using a perovskite quantum dot (PQD)/siloxane composite by ligand exchanged PQD with silane composite followed by surface activation by an addition of halide-anion containing salt. Due to this surface activation, it was possible to construct the PQD surface with a silane ligand using a non-polar organic solvent that does not damage the PQD. As a result, the ligand-exchanged PQD with a silane compound exhibited high dispersibility in the siloxane matrix and excellent atmospheric stability due to sol–gel condensation. Based on highly ambient stable PQD/siloxane composite based CCLs, full-color micro-LED display has a 1 mm pixel pitch, about 25.4 pixels per inch (PPI) resolution was achieved. In addition, due to the thin thickness of the black matrix to prevent blue light interference, the possibility of a flexible display that can be operated without damage even with a bending radius of 5 mm was demonstrated.

Abstract A flexible full-color micro-LED display with high mechanical robustness was fabricated by printing quantum dots (QDs) on a blue micro-LED array using standard photolithography. The red and green colors yielded from QDs exhibit a better color gamut than conventional color filters. The light conversion efficiency was enhanced by adding TiO2 nanoparticles to the QD-photoresist composite. This full-color micro-LED display was successfully mounted on various unusual substrates such as curved glass, fabrics, and human skin, enabling diverse optoelectronic applications. In addition, wireless multi-channel visible light communication (VLC) based on the wavelength-division-multiplexing orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (WDM-OFDM) technique was demonstrated using a QD-based color micro-LED panel. A high data transmission rate of 1.9 Gbps was successfully obtained owing to the high electrical–optical modulation bandwidth of the QD-based micro-LED panel.

Micro light-emitting diode (micro-LED) will play an important role in the future generation of smart displays. They are found very attractive in many applications, such as maskless lithography, biosensor, augmented reality (AR)/mixed reality etc, at the same time. A monitor that can fulfill saturated color rendering, high display resolution, and fast response time is highly desirable, and the micro-LED-based technology could be our best chance to meet these requirements. At present, semiconductor-based red, green and blue micro-LED chips and color-conversion enhanced micro-LEDs are the major contenders for full-color high-resolution displays. Both technologies need revolutionary ways to perfect the material qualities, fabricate the device, and assemble the individual parts into a system. In this roadmap, we will highlight the current status and challenges of micro-LED-related issues and discuss the possible advances in science and technology that can stand up to the challenges. The innovation in epitaxy, such as the tunnel junction, the direct epitaxy and nitride-based quantum wells for red and ultraviolet, can provide critical solutions to the micro-LED performance in various aspects. The quantum scale structure, like nanowires or nanorods, can be crucial for the scaling of the devices. Meanwhile, the color conversion method, which uses colloidal quantum dot as the active material, can provide a hassle-free way to assemble a large micro-LED array and emphasis the full-color demonstration via colloidal quantum dot. These quantum dots can be patterned by porous structure, inkjet, or photo-sensitive resin. In addition to the micro-LED devices, the peripheral components or technologies are equally important. Microchip transfer and repair, heterogeneous integration with the electronics, and the novel 2D material cannot be ignored, or the overall display module will be very power-consuming. The AR is one of the potential customers for micro-LED displays, and the user experience so far is limited due to the lack of a truly qualified display. Our analysis showed the micro-LED is on the way to addressing and solving the current problems, such as high loss optical coupling and narrow field of view. All these efforts are channeled to achieve an efficient display with all ideal qualities that meet our most stringent viewing requirements, and we expect it to become an indispensable part of our daily life.

In this study, we fabricate an electrode structure, in which a carbon nanotube (CNT) film is coated on the composite of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Electromechanical tests disclose that incorporation of a high density of well-dispersed CNTs (with the aid of UV/O3 treatment) in the PDMS substrate offers an alternative current path when the CNT film cracked, helping demonstrate much improved electromechanical characteristics. Further analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with the data from the electromechanical tests illuminates some interesting electromechanical features and the failure mechanism of the material. We have observed and analyzed the fracture characteristics of the monolayer CVD-graphene using pressure bulge testing setup. The monolayer CVD-graphene has appeared to undergo environmentally assisted subcritical crack growth in room condition, i.e. stress corrosion cracking arising from the adsorption of water vapor on the graphene and the subsequent chemical reactions. The crack propagation in graphene has appeared to be able to be reasonably tamed by adjusting applied humidity and stress. The fracture toughness, describing the ability of a material containing inherent flaws to resist catastrophic failure, of the CVD-graphene has turned out to be exceptionally high, as compared to other carbon based 3D materials. These results imply that the CVD-graphene could be an ideal candidate as a structural material notwithstanding environmental susceptibility. In addition, the measurements reported here suggest that specific non-continuum fracture behaviors occurring in 2D monoatomic structures can be macroscopically well visualized and characterized.
