Abstract

Anion production cross sections in collisions between Cn+, Cn carbon clusters (n = 5) and helium atoms have been measured in high-velocity collisions (v = 2.25 and 2.6 au). This paper focuses on two of the three processes responsible for the Cn- production, namely double electron capture (DEC) onto Cn+ cations and single electron capture onto neutral (SECN) Cn.They were experimentally distinguished from a gaseous thickness dependence study. Dissociative and non-dissociative cross sections were measured and, in the case of DEC, all dissociative branching ratios measured; for these small systems, the C2- fragment was found magical. Data concerning electron capture in neutral-neutral collisions are extremely rare, especially at high velocity. Introduction of this measured process in the independent atom and electron (IAE) model allowed us to revisit and satisfactorily reproduce the so-far unexplained size evolution of single electron capture (SEC) cross sections in 2.6 au Cn+-He (n = 10) collisions (Chabot et al 2006 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 39 2593-603). IAE calculations for DEC cross sections and their comparison with experiment suggest a loss of electron in anionic Cn- species after the collision, competing with fragmentation and depending on the size. Abstract

We show that an x-ray charge coupled device (CCD) may be used as a particle detector for atomic and molecular mega-electron-volt (MeV) projectiles of around a few hundred keV per atomic mass unit. For atomic species, spectroscopic properties in kinetic energy measurements (i.e., linearity and energy resolution) are found to be close to those currently obtained with implanted or surface barrier silicon particle detectors. For molecular species, in order to increase the maximum kinetic energy detection limit, we propose to put a thin foil in front of the CCD. This foil breaks up the molecules into atoms and spreads the charges over many CCD pixels and therefore avoiding saturation effects. This opens new perspectives in high velocity molecular dissociation studies with accelerator facilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A 256-anode channel plate device with dedicated electronics has been built for the detection and accurate timing of a large number of simultaneous particle impacts in counting mode. In addition, a method is described which extends the performance of this detector by providing access to the amplitude response without any encoding. This experimental amplitude is extracted for each pixel using a threshold discriminator variation procedure. A detailed description of the detection processes allows calculation of the detector output signal amplitude for single as well as for multiple impacts per pixel. These calculations take into account the geometrical design of the pixelated anode structure. From a comparison between calculated and experimental amplitudes the number of incident particles per pixel can be deduced and thus the total number of particles impinging on the MCP surface. An illustration is given that uses the spatial distribution of swift C[SUB60] carbon constituents that exit a thin carbon foil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The study of the superdeformed (SD)196Pb nucleus has been revisited using the Eurogam Phase 2 spectrometer. All of the three observed excited SD bands were found to decay to the yrast SD band through, presumably, E1 transitions, allowing relative spin and excitation energy assignments. Abstract

Three mini-orange conversion–electron spectrometers and four Euroball Ge Cluster detectors have been used for γ–e- coincidence spectroscopy of superdeformed 135Nd. Transitions within the superdeformed band are shown to have the expected E2 multipolarity. The 766.5–keV transition which links the band to a positive-parity state has a conversion coefficient consistent with M1 multipolarity. Consequently, positive parity is deduced for the superdeformed band. No evidence for E0 transitions was found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The nucleus Pb was populated via the Er(Si, 5n) reaction at a beam energy of 159 MeV and studied with the EUROGAM II spectrometer. Five new dipole ΔI = 1 cascades have been found. The Pb dipole bands are discussed in terms of microscopic HF+BCS calculations. The proposed configurations are based on a high-K two-quasiproton excitation coupled to rotation aligned quasineutrons. Parallel to the dipole bands the six superdeformed bands have been discussed in the framework of microscopic mean-field calculations. The bands are interpreted as three pairs of signature partners based on quasineutron excitations. Cross-talk transitions linking two signature partner superdeformed bands have been observed and, for the first time in lead isotopes, a mean B(M1)/B(E2) ratio value of 0.15±0.04 μ/e has been extracted. Abstract

We have investigated the structure of the superdeformed band in Nd using conversion-electron spectroscopy. The transitions within the superdeformed band show conversion coefficients which are consistent with an E2 multipolarity. From the conversion coefficients of transitions linking this band with known low-lying states its positive parity was established. Abstract

High-spin states in 196Pb have been populated in two different heavy-ion-induced reactions using thin and Au-backed targets, respectively. Gamma-ray coincidences were measured using the EUROBALL spectrometer array. Five new magnetic-rotational bands have been found. The previously known four bands have been extended and some of their levels have been reordered. With one exception, all the bands have been connected to lower-lying states and excitation energies, spins and parities have been determined. From the systematic properties of the bands and from comparison to tilted-axis cranking calculations, arguments for configuration assignments to the bands are derived. It is suggested that the bands are based on proton 11− and 8+ particle states coupled to various neutron–hole excitations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
