Time-resolved ultrafast EUV magnetic scattering was used to test a recentprediction of >10 km/s domain wall speeds by optically exciting a magneticsample with a nanoscale labyrinthine domain pattern. Ultrafast distortion ofthe diffraction pattern was observed at markedly different timescales comparedto the magnetization quenching. The diffraction pattern distortion shows athreshold-dependence with laser fluence, not seen for magnetization quenching,consistent with a picture of domain wall motion with pinning sites. Supportedby simulations, we show that a speed of $\approx$ 66 km/s for highly curveddomain walls can explain the experimental data. While our data agree with theprediction of extreme, non-equilibrium wall speeds locally, it differs from thedetails of the theory, suggesting that additional mechanisms are required tofully understand these effects.

We have studied the effects of electrical current pulses on skyrmion formation in a series of Co/Ni/Pt-based multilayers. Transmission x-ray microscopy reveals that by applying electrical current pulses of duration and current density on the order of 50 μs and 1.7×1010A/m2, respectively, in an applied magnetic field of 50 mT, stripe-to-skyrmion transformations are attained. The skyrmions formed by such pulses remain stable across a wide range of magnetic fields, including zero field. We attribute the transformation primarily to current-induced Joule heating on the order of ∼128 K. Reducing the magnetic moment and perpendicular anisotropy using thin rare-earth spacers reduces the pulse duration, current density, and magnetic field necessary to 25 μs, 2.4×109A/m2, and 27 mT, respectively. These findings show that energetic inputs allow for the formation of skyrmion phases in a broad class of materials, and that material properties can be tuned to yield more energy-efficient access to skyrmion phases.

We present a study on nanoscale skyrmionic spin textures in , a rare-earth complex noncollinear ferromagnet. We confirm, using X-ray microscopy, that can host lattices of metastable skyrmion bubbles at room temperature in the absence of a magnetic field, after applying a suitable field cooling protocol. The skyrmion bubbles are robust against temperature changes from room temperature to 330 K. Furthermore, the skyrmion bubbles can be distorted, deformed, and recovered by varying strength and orientation of the applied magnetic field. We have used nitrogen-vacancy nanoscale magnetic imaging to estimate and map the magnetic stray fields originating from our lamella samples and find stray field magnitudes on the order of a few mT near the sample surface. Micromagnetic simulations show an overall agreement with the observed behaviour of the sample under different magnetic field protocols. We also find that the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is not required to reproduce our experimental results. Its inclusion in the simulation leads to a reversal of the skyrmionic object core polarity, which is not experimentally observed. Herein, the experimental observation of micrometer‐scale magnetic skyrmions at room temperature in several Pt/Co‐based thin film heterostructures designed to possess low exchange stiffness, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, and a modest interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (iDMI) is reported. It is found both experimentally and by micromagnetic and analytic modeling that a low exchange stiffness and modest iDMI eliminates the energetic penalty associated with forming domain walls in thin films. When the domain wall energy density approaches negative values, the remanent morphology transitions from a uniform state to labyrinthine stripes. A low exchange stiffness, indicated by a sub‐400 K Curie temperature, is achieved in Pt/Co, Pt/Co/Ni, and Pt/Co/Ni/Re structures by reducing the Co thickness to the ultrathin limit (<0.3 nm). Similar effects occur in thicker Pt/Co/NixCu1−x structures when the Ni layer is alloyed with Cu. At this transition in domain morphology, skyrmion phases are stabilized by small (<1 mT), perpendicular magnetic fields, and skyrmion motion in response to spin–orbit torque is observed. While the temperature and thickness‐induced morphological phase transitions observed are similar to the well‐studied spin reorientation transition that occurs in the ultrathin limit, the underlying energy balances are substantially modified by the presence of an iDMI. Given a sequence of curves on a surface, we provide conditions which ensure that (1) the sequence is an infinite quasi-geodesic in the curve complex, (2) the limit in the Gromov boundary is represented by a nonuniquely ergodic ending lamination, and (3) the sequence divides into a finite set of subsequences, each of which projectively converges to one of the ergodic measures on the ending lamination. The conditions are sufficiently robust, allowing us to construct sequences on a closed surface of genus g for which the space of measures has the maximal dimension 3 ⁢ g - 3 {3g-3} , for example. We also study the limit sets in the Thurston boundary of Teichmüller geodesic rays defined by quadratic differentials whose vertical foliations are obtained from the constructions mentioned above. We prove that such examples exist for which the limit is a cycle in the 1-skeleton of the simplex of projective classes of measures visiting every vertex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we prove that the limit set of any Weil–Petersson geodesic ray with uniquely ergodic ending lamination is a single point in the Thurston compactification of Teichmüller space. On the other hand, we construct examples of Weil–Petersson geodesics with minimal non-uniquely ergodic ending laminations and limit set a circle in the Thurston compactification. The phase transitions and associated magnetocaloric properties of the Ni2Mn0.55CoxCr0.45-xGa (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) Heusler alloy system have been investigated. All samples exhibit a first-order martensitic phase transition, evidenced by a sharp drop in the resistivity versus temperature data and a thermomagnetic irreversibility in the dc magnetization data of the respective samples. Large magnetic entropy changes have also been observed near the phase transitions. The martensitic transformation temperature increases as Cr is partially replaced with Co. Additionally, this substitution leads to a partial decoupling of the magnetic and structural phase transitions, dramatically suppressing any magnetic hysteresis losses. Furthermore, the change in electrical resistivity during the phase transition remains relatively constant across the system, despite major changes in the degree of structural disorder and magnetostructural phase transition coupling. We have explored the structural and superconducting properties of ZrNi2-xTMxGa (TM = Cu, Co) Heusler compounds via x-ray diffraction, scanning electron mi croscopy, electrical resistivity, dc magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements. All samples crystallized in the cubic L21 structure at room temperature. For x ≤ 0.25, all the ZrNi2-xCuxGa compounds showed superconducting properties and a decrease in TC with increasing Cu concentration. The dc magnetization data suggested type-II superconductivity for all the Cu-doped compounds. Contrary to the ZrNi2-xCuxGa compounds, no superconductivity was observed in the ZrNi2-xCoxGa compounds. Substitution of Ni by a small concentration of Co destroyed superconductivity in the Co-doped compounds. The experimental results are discussed and possible explanations are provided. An experimental study has been performed on a series of Ni2Mn0.4-xFexCr0.6Ga Heusler alloys. At room temperature, the alloys crystallize in either the tetragonal martensite (x < 0.1) or cubic L21 structure (x ≥ 0.1). Additionally, a Cr-Fe based face-centered cubic γ-Fe type secondary phase was found to co-exist in the samples. Magnetization and transport measurements revealed that the Curie and martensitic transition temperatures decrease as Mn is replaced with Fe. Atypical to other Ni2MnGa-derivative Heusler alloys, the transitiontemperatures decrease at the same rate with respect to x for x ≥ 0.1. Thus, the two transitions do not couple in to a single magnetostructural transition at any composition. Transport measurements revealed that all samples exhibit a sharp drop in resistivity during the martensitic phase transition (13 - 17 %), with the magnitude of this drop remaining relatively constant over the entire series. The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of a series of minutely doped Mn5-xFexGe3 compounds that exhibit the D88-type hexagonal crystal structure at room temperature have been investigated. For all Fe concentrations, the alloys are ferromagnetic and undergo a second-order ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition near room temperature. Although the small Fe doping had little effect on the ferromagnetic transition temperatures of the system, changes in the saturation magnetization and magnetic anisotropy were observed. For x≤0.15, all compounds exhibit nearly the same magnetic entropy change of ~7 J/kg K, for a field change of 50 kOe. However, the magnitude of the refrigerant capacities increased with Fe doping, with values up to 108.5 J/kg and 312 J/kg being observed for field changes of 20 kOe and 50 kOe, respectively. As second-order phase transition materials, the Mn5-xFexGe3 compounds are not subject to the various drawbacks associated with first-order phase transition materials yet exhibit favorable magnetocaloric effects. Bounded-type 3-manifolds arise as combinatorially bounded gluings of irreducible 3-manifolds chosen from a finite list. We prove effective hyperbolization and effective rigidity for a broad class of 3-manifolds of bounded type and large gluing heights. Specifically, we show the existence and uniqueness of hyperbolic metrics on 3-manifolds of bounded type and large heights, and prove existence of a bilipschitz diffeomorphism to a combinatorial model described explicitly in terms of the list of irreducible manifolds, the topology of the identification, and the combinatorics of the gluing maps. We prove that hyperbolic 3-manifolds are geometrically inflexible: a unit quasiconformal deformation of a Kleinian group extends to an equivariant bi-Lipschitz diffeomorphism between quotients whose pointwise bi-Lipschitz constant decays exponentially in the distance from the boundary of the convex core for points in the thick part. Estimates at points in the thin part are controlled by similar estimates on the complex lengths of short curves. We use this inflexibility to give a new proof of the convergence of pseudo-Anosov double iteration on the quasi-Fuchsian space of a closed surface, and the resulting hyperbolization theorem for closed 3-manifolds that fiber over the circle with pseudo-Anosov monodromy. Two key theoretical predictions for flat negative index lenses are that thicker lenses should have both internal and external foci, and that these foci should move linearly with small deviations in frequency. Two-dimensional electric field profiles of microwave transmission through rectangular slabs of composite wire and split-ring resonator material are presented. By scanning inside and outside the material, both internal and external foci are revealed. The martensite-austenite phase transition in a series of Ni2Mn1-xCrxGa Heusler alloys has been investigated by x-ray diffraction, dc magnetization, and electrical resistivity measurements. With increasing Cr concentration, the martensitic phase transformation shifts to higher temperature while the ferromagnetic transition shifts to lower temperature. For x<0.5, the martensitic transformation occurs in a ferromagnetic state, while for x>0.5, the transition occurs in a paramagnetic state. The Cr doping results in a reconstruction of the electronic structure, particularly, near the Fermi level, which is indicated in the resistivity data where a systematic jumplike anomaly is observed in the vicinity of the martensite-austenite phase transformation. With increasing Cr concentration, the magnitude of the jump in resistivity changes dramatically from less than 1% to nearly 18% The results are discussed considering the fundamental interactions in Heusler alloys. We present a case report of a helicopter pilot who fell into a crevasse during a fuel delivery in Antarctica. He was trapped alone in the crevasse for 3 h while waiting for a rescue team to arrive, and a further 1 h during the extrication process. His condition deteriorated during the extrication and he lost consciousness and signs of life minutes after being dragged over the lip of the crevasse. He was then loaded into the rescue helicopter and treated with intermittent cardiopulmonary resuscitation during the 39-min return flight. Initial esophageal temperature on arrival at the Davis Base medical facility was 24.2°C. After 18 h of further treatment (mechanical ventilation with warm humidified O 2 , with internal and external warming) he was pronounced dead. The cause of death was hypothermia with minimal physical injury. This case highlights some of the extra challenges facing operational, rescue, and medical personnel in an isolated location. These complications include the tendency for flight crew to remove cold weather clothing during flight due to restricted mobility and excessive heat load from cabin heating; extended time for arrival of the rescue crew; extrication in a confined space; limited helicopter cabin space for transporting the rescue team and their rescue and medical equipment; and extended transport time to the nearest medical facility., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Novel non-collinear antiferromagnets with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking, non-trivial band topology, and unconventional transport properties have received immense research interest over the past decade due to their rich physics and enormous promise in technological applications. One of the central focuses in this emerging field is exploring the relationship between the microscopic magnetic structure and exotic material properties. Here, nanoscale imaging of both spin-orbit-torque-induced deterministic magnetic switching and chiral spin rotation in non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn films using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers are reported. Direct evidence of the off-resonance dipole-dipole coupling between the spin dynamics in Mn 3 Sn and proximate NV centers is also demonstrated by NV relaxometry measurements. These results demonstrate the unique capabilities of NV centers in accessing the local information of the magnetic order and dynamics in these emergent quantum materials and suggest new opportunities for investigating the interplay between topology and magnetism in a broad range of topological magnets., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Magnetic nanoparticles such as FePt in the L1 0 phase are the bedrock of our current data storage technology. As the grains become smaller to keep up with technological demands, the superparamagnetic limit calls for materials with higher magnetocrystalline anisotropy. This, in turn, reduces the magnetic exchange length to just a few nanometers, enabling magnetic structures to be induced within the nanoparticles. Here, we describe the existence of spin-wave solitons, dynamic localized bound states of spin-wave excitations, in FePt nanoparticles. We show with time-resolved x-ray diffraction and micromagnetic modeling that spin-wave solitons of sub-10 nm sizes form out of the demagnetized state following femtosecond laser excitation. The measured soliton spin precession frequency of 0.1 THz positions this system as a platform to develop novel miniature devices.

We measure two-dimensional profiles of collimated microwave beams transmitted through composite wire and split-ring resonator prisms. Prior experiments suggest these structures have a negative index of refraction, though these claims have been questioned. Our 2D measurements demonstrate that transmission obeys Snell's law with a negative index, confirming the refractive nature of this signal and refuting alternatives posed in the criticisms. In addition, we present preliminary evidence that a flat rectangular slab of this material can focus power from a point source.
