Search

Physics beyond the Standard Model that is resonant in one or more dimensions has been a longstanding focus of countless searches at colliders and beyond. Recently, many new strategies for resonant anomaly detection have been developed, where sideband information can be used in conjunction with modern machine learning, in order to generate synthetic datasets representing the Standard Model background. Until now, this approach was only able to accommodate a relatively small number of dimensions, limiting the breadth of the search sensitivity. Using recent innovations in point cloud generative models, we show that this strategy can also be applied to the full phase space, using all relevant particles for the anomaly detection. As a proof of principle, we show that the signal from the R&D dataset from the LHC Olympics is findable with this method, opening up the door to future studies that explore the interplay between depth and breadth in the representation of the data for anomaly detection.

This article explores determinants of effective communication for crisis responses across functional sub-systems at diverse public organisation levels. That is done by analysing WHO and IPCC statements on COVID-19 and climate change, and governmental responses, drawing on Denmark as a pilot case. A functional sub-system is constituted by binary codes, embodying the sub-system’s key logic. Sub-systems respond to information triggering their logics. The analysis shows that with an emphasis on effective governance and the delivery of health care, the WHO was effective in generating governmental action on COVID-19. By contrast, the IPCC’s extensive deployment of the true/false logic of science is less effective for activating governmental response. Addressing public governance and relevance of Luhmann’s systems theory, our findings suggest that decision-makers can be prompted into action through deployment of arguments that connect to governments’ logic. This finding holds potential for improving communication between scientific and governance agencies for crisis responses. Este artículo explora los factores determinantes de una comunicación eficaz para responder a las crisis a través de subsistemas funcionales en diversos niveles de organizaciones públicas. Para ello se analizan las declaraciones de la OMS y el IPCC sobre la COVID-19 y el cambio climático, así como las respuestas gubernamentales, tomando Dinamarca como caso piloto. Un subsistema funcional está constituido por códigos binarios, que encarnan la lógica clave del subsistema. Los subsistemas responden a la información que activa su lógica. El análisis muestra que, al hacer hincapié en la gobernanza eficaz y la prestación de asistencia sanitaria, la OMS fue eficaz a la hora de generar medidas gubernamentales en relación con la COVID-19. En cambio, el amplio despliegue de la lógica de la ciencia verdadero/falso por parte del IPCC es menos eficaz para activar la respuesta gubernamental. En lo que respecta a la gobernanza pública y la relevancia de la teoría de sistemas de Luhmann, nuestros resultados insinúan que el despliegue de argumentos que conecten con la lógica de los gobiernos puede inducir a la acción a los responsables de tomar decisiones. Este hallazgo puede mejorar la comunicación entre los organismos científicos y de gobierno en las respuestas a las crisis.

This article applies Luhmann’s systems theory approach to the argumentative dynamics of the processes and outcomes of key UN and EU initiatives during the decade 2002-2011 in regard to the development and acceptance of human rights responsibilities for business enterprises. That decade saw a change from rejection to welcoming of ideas on such responsibilities as a key social sustainability issue. Demonstrating the use of systems theory to empirical cases, the article shows how the systems theory perspective generates important insights on communicative aspects of a regulatory process towards a normative change in contexts with multiple and diverse interests at play in today’s legal order where the transnational character of many sustainability problems exceeds the nation state. The article fills a knowledge gap concerning processes for governing transnational sustainability issues, where the territorial limits of national public law and the weak private-actor coverage of international law pose challenges to conventional regulation.

Studies have shown a high prevalence of trauma and PTSD among patients with severe mental illness, but relatively few studies have examined the outcomes of PTSD treatment for this patient group. The aim of this case-series was to assess the feasibility of a Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) intervention for PTSD in people with psychosis. The study examined the possibilities and obstacles when treating this population within clinical settings. Patients were selected from four community mental health centers and were screened for traumatic experiences and symptoms of PTSD. A small group of eligible participants (n=7) received manualized TF-CBT adapted for patients with psychosis. Experienced therapists received training and supervision in the intervention. Symptoms of PTSD and psychosis were assessed at baseline and post-treatment along with quality of life, level of functioning, alliance, life events, engagement, suicidal ideation and adverse events. Treatment fidelity and the different combinations of treatment modules were monitored in regard to implementation. Three cases were selected as illustrative of the different treatment courses when implementing the TF-CBT intervention within this population. Detailed case descriptions were based on quantitative ratings and the therapists’ experiences with the therapy. Results from the case series highlighted issues regarding toleration of treatment, large variation in psychopathology and the task of matching treatment needs with appropriate therapeutic techniques. The complexity of the patient group may affect treatment and clinical research studies. Lessons learned from this case series can contribute to the future development implementation and evaluation of trauma treatment for patients with psychosis.

HgTe is a versatile topological material and has enabled the realization of a variety of topological states, including two- and three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators and topological semimetals. Nevertheless, a quantitative understanding of its electronic structure remains challenging, in particular, due to coupling of the Te 5p-derived valence electrons to Hg 5d core states at shallow binding energy. We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of the electronic structure in strained HgTe(001) films in the 3D topological-insulator regime, based on angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory. The results establish detailed agreement in terms of: (i) electronic band dispersions and orbital symmetries, (ii) surface and bulk contributions to the electronic structure, and (iii) the importance of Hg 5d states in the valence-band formation. Supported by theory, our experiments directly image the paradigmatic band inversion in HgTe, underlying its nontrivial band topology.

Abstract Introduction Due to a variety of barriers, the majority of cancer survivors do not do enough physical activity to meet current recommendations. This study will assess the feasibility of participation in parkrun walk-run events as a novel mode of community rehabilitation exercise. Methods This protocol describes a single-arm intervention study with participants acting as their own controls. The study accepts adults diagnosed with any type of cancer, undergoing treatment or in remission. Participants must be able to walk and have medical clearance to exercise. A sample of 100 participants will be recruited across the Sunshine Coast over two years. Data will be collected over 9-months at 4 time points: Baseline (T1); after 4-weeks of usual daily activities and cancer management prior to parkrun participation(T2); after a 6-month parkrun intervention (T3); at 2-month follow-up (T4). The primary objectives are to assess the acceptability of, and adherence to, parkrun as rehabilitation exercise. Secondary outcomes include wellness, health-related quality of life, anxiety, depression, mood, physical function, parkrun metrics, dietary intake, and diet and exercise behaviour. Conclusion This study will be the first to examine the long-term effects of parkrun as a cancer rehabilitation modality with regard to physical function, psychosocial outcomes and dietary intake. Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by the disruption of repetitive, concurrent and sequential motor actions due to compromised timing-functions principally located in cortex-basal ganglia (BG) circuits. Increasing evidence suggests that motor impairments in untreated PD patients are linked to an excessive synchronization of cortex-BG activity at beta frequencies (13–30 Hz). Levodopa and subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) suppress pathological beta-band reverberation and improve the motor symptoms in PD. Yet a dynamic tuning of beta oscillations in BG-cortical loops is fundamental for movement-timing and synchronization, and the impact of PD therapies on sensorimotor functions relying on neural transmission in the beta frequency-range remains controversial. Here, we set out to determine the differential effects of network neuromodulation through dopaminergic medication (ON and OFF levodopa) and STN-DBS (ON-DBS, OFF-DBS) on tapping synchronization and accompanying cortical activities. To this end, we conducted a rhythmic finger-tapping study with high-density EEG-recordings in 12 PD patients before and after surgery for STN-DBS and in 12 healthy controls. STN-DBS significantly ameliorated tapping parameters as frequency, amplitude and synchrony to the given auditory rhythms. Aberrant neurophysiologic signatures of sensorimotor feedback in the beta-range were found in PD patients: their neural modulation was weaker, temporally sluggish and less distributed over the right cortex in comparison to controls. Levodopa and STN-DBS boosted the dynamics of beta-band modulation over the right hemisphere, hinting to an improved timing of movements relying on tactile feedback. The strength of the post-event beta rebound over the supplementary motor area correlated significantly with the tapping asynchrony in patients, thus indexing the sensorimotor match between the external auditory pacing signals and the performed taps. PD patients showed an excessive interhemispheric coherence in the beta-frequency range during the finger-tapping task, while under DBS-ON the cortico-cortical connectivity in the beta-band was normalized. Ultimately, therapeutic DBS significantly ameliorated the auditory-motor coupling of PD patients, enhancing the electrophysiological processing of sensorimotor feedback-information related to beta-band activity, and thus allowing a more precise cued-tapping performance.

Abstract Background Static lower extremity alignment (LEA) during normal stance has been used clinically as a tool to determine the presence of known anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) risk factors during dynamic tasks. Previous work investigating the relationship between static LEA during normal stance and risk factors for ACL injury is limited by the use of imprecise methods or because it focuses on knee valgus only and no other potentially important variables. The aim of this investigation was to determine the relationships between static LEA and the corresponding LEA during drop landings. Methods Forty-one female athletes were recruited for the study (age: 19.8 ± 2.5 years, height: 1.73 ± 0.06 m, mass: 64.03 ± 6.66 kg). Lower limb kinematic data were collected using a 10 camera infrared motion capture system (500 Hz) with retro-reflective markers placed over key anatomical landmarks. This system was linked to two force platforms (1000 Hz) with subsequent three-dimensional kinematic and kinetic data developed using standard software (Visual3D). Following an appropriate warm-up, data collection involved participants standing with their arms partially abducted to record static LEA. This was following by a series of drop landings from a 0.4 m box onto the force platforms. Maximum LEA data during drop landings were then compared with static LEA. Results Analyses showed that in comparison to static stance, during landings the anterior tilt of the pelvis decreased while hip abduction and knee internal rotation increased. At best, static LEA variables were moderately correlated (r = -0.51 to 0.58) with peak values measured during drop landings. Additionally, regression analysis did not yield any significant predictors of any key peak hip or knee variables measured during drop landings (p = 0.15 to 0.89). Conclusion When combined, the poor relationships observed between kinematics during static LEA and LEA during drop landings calls into question the practice of using static measures to predict LEA during even simple landing tasks. These findings suggest static assessments of LEA may have minimal value as an ACL injury screening tool.

Abstract The band inversion of topological materials in three spatial dimensions is intimately connected to the parity anomaly of 2D massless Dirac fermions, known from quantum field theory. At finite magnetic fields, the parity anomaly reveals itself as a non‐zero spectral asymmetry, i.e., an imbalance between the number of conduction and valence band Landau levels, due to the unpaired zero Landau level. This work reports the realization of this 2D Dirac physics at a single surface of the 3D topological insulator (Hg,Mn)Te. An unconventional re‐entrant sequence of quantized Hall plateaus in the measured Hall resistance can be directly related to the occurrence of spectral asymmetry in a single topological surface state. The effect should be observable in any topological insulator where the transport is dominated by a single Dirac surface state.

IntroductionNecrotizing meningoencephalitis (NME) in pugs is a potentially fatal disease, which needs lifelong treatment with immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory drugs and shares parallels with acute fulminating multiple sclerosis. Genetic variants of the DLA class II gene are associated with an increased risk for NME. Genetic testing is recommended prior to breeding. The aim of this study was to describe the current allele frequency of a previously identified NME risk variant in the European pug population. A secondary aim was to investigate the association of the NME risk variant with the clinical phenotype in pugs.MethodsResults of genetic testing for the CFA12:2605517delC variant in European pugs between 2012 and 2020 were retrieved (n = 5,974). A validated questionnaire was mailed to all submitters of samples for further information on neurological signs, diagnostic tests, and disease course.ResultsThe allele frequency of the CFA12 NME risk variant was 25.7% in the European pug population dogs; 7.4% of the dogs were homozygous and 36.7% were heterozygous for the NME risk variant on CFA12. Completed questionnaires were available in 203 dogs including 25 dogs with epileptic seizures or other neurological signs. The clinical phenotype was consistent with NME in 3.9% with a median age of onset of 1.0 years, and indicative of idiopathic epilepsy in 2.9% with a median onset of 2.5 years. Eleven dogs remained unclassified. Pugs with the NME phenotype were significantly more frequently homozygous for the NME risk variant on CFA12 compared to pugs ≥6 years without neurological signs or seizures (p = 0.008).DiscussionThe CFA12:2605517delC genetic risk variant is widely distributed in the European pug population and frequently homozygous in pugs with a NME phenotype. The data support the clinical relevance of the CFA12:2605517delC genetic risk variant.

IntroductionAuditory brainstem response (ABR) is the gold standard for hearing testing in dogs. ABR is commonly used in puppies to diagnose congenital sensorineural deafness. Long test times limit the use for a more comprehensive hearing screening in veterinary practice. This study aimed to establish a super-fast hearing screening protocol in dogs.MethodsHearing thresholds were routinely measured with a mobile device designed for newborn hearing screening in 90 dogs. We introduced modifications of the ABR protocol, e. g., a binaural test mode, higher stimulus rates, a broadband chirp stimulus, and an algorithm for automatic peak V detection in a stepwise fashion. Hearing thresholds were then measured with fast protocols utilizing either 30 Hz click or 90 Hz broadband chirp stimuli with 80, 60, 40, 30, 20, 10, 0 and −10 dBnHL stimulation intensities. Interrater reliability, agreement between click and chirp hearing thresholds and correlations with clinical characteristics of the dogs were assessed.ResultsUsing all innovations, the test time for hearing threshold assessment in both ears was reduced to 1.11 min (mean). The chirp stimulus accentuated both, peak V and the subsequent trough, which are essential features for judgement of the hearing threshold, but preceding peaks were less conspicuous. Interrater reliability and agreement between click and chirp hearing threshold was excellent. Dogs >10 years of age and dogs with abnormal hearing score or otitis score had significantly higher hearing thresholds than younger dogs (p ≤ 0.001) or dogs without abnormalities (p

Casimir force densities, i.e., force per area, become very large if two solid material surfaces come closer together to each other than 10 nm. In most cases, the forces are attractive. In some cases, they can be repulsive depending on the solid materials and the fluid medium in between. This review provides an overview of experimental and theoretical studies that have been performed and focuses on four main aspects: (i) the combinations of different materials, (ii) the considered geometries, (iii) the applied experimental measurement methodologies and (iv) a novel self-assembly methodology based on Casimir forces. Briefly reviewed is also the influence of additional parameters such as temperature, conductivity, and surface roughness. The Casimir effect opens many application possibilities in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), where an overview is also provided. The knowledge generation in this fascinating field requires interdisciplinary approaches to generate synergetic effects between technological fabrication metrology, theoretical simulations, the establishment of adequate models, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Finally, multiple applications are addressed as a research roadmap.

Abstract To explore the influence of bilateral subthalamic deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on car driving ability in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD), we prospectively examined two age-matched, actively driving PD patient groups: one group undergone DBS-surgery (PD-DBS, n = 23) and one group that was eligible for DBS but did not undergo surgery (PD-nDBS, n = 29). In PD-DBS patients, investigation at Baseline was done just prior and at Follow-up 6–12 month after DBS-surgery. In PD-nDBS patients, time interval between Baseline and Follow-up was aimed to be comparable. To assess the general PD driving level, driving was assessed once in 33 age-matched healthy controls at Baseline. As results, clinical and driving characteristics of PD-DBS, PD-nDBS and controls did not differ at Baseline. At Follow-up, PD-DBS patients drove unsafer than PD-nDBS patients. This effect was strongly driven by two single PD-DBS participants (9%) with poor Baseline and disastrous Follow-up driving performance. Retrospectively, we could not identify any of the assessed motor and non-motor clinical Baseline characteristics as predictive for this driving-deterioration at Follow-up. Excluding these two outliers, comparable driving performance between PD-DBS and PD-nDBS patients not only at Baseline but also at Follow-up was demonstrated. Age, disease duration and severity as well as Baseline driving insecurity were associated with poorer driving performance at Follow-up. This first prospective study on driving safety in PD after DBS surgery indicates that DBS usually does not alter driving safety but might increase the risk for driving deterioration, especially in single subjects with already unsafe driving prior to DBS surgery.

Background and objectivesResearch on driving ability in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) suggests that they might be at risk for unsafe driving due to MS-related motor, visual, and cognitive impairment. Our first aim was to investigate differences in driving ability and performance between people with MS (PwMS) and those without any neurologic or psychiatric disease (“controls”). Secondly, we determined disease-related factors influencing driving ability in PwMS.MethodsWe prospectively compared standardized performance in a driving simulator between 97 persons with early MS [mean (SD) = 6.4 (7.3) years since diagnosis, mean (SD) Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) = 2.5 (1.4)] and 94 group-matched controls. Participants completed an extensive examination comprising questionnaires and assessments regarding driving, cognitive and psychological factors, as well as demographic and disease-related measures. Between-group comparisons of driving-relevant neuropsychological tests and driving performance were done. Correlations were performed to define demographic and disease-related factors on driving performance in MS.ResultsIn a driving simulator setting, PwMS had more driving accidents [T(188) = 2.762, p = 0.006], reacted slower to hazardous events [T(188) = 2.561, p = 0.011], made more driving errors [T(188) = 2.883, p = 0.004] and had a worse Driving Safety Score (DSS) [T(188) = 3.058, p = 0.003] than controls. The only disease-related measure to be associated with most driving outcomes was the Wechsler Block-Tapping test (WMS-R) backward: number of accidents (r = 0.28, p = 0.01), number of driving errors (r = 0.23, p = 0.05) and DSS (r = −0.23, p = 0.05).ConclusionDriving performance in a simulator seems to be reduced in PwMS at an early stage of disease compared to controls, as a result of increased erroneous driving, reduced reaction time and higher accident rate. MS-related impairment in mobility, vision, cognition, and in psychological and demographic aspects showed no or only minimal association to driving ability, but impairment in different areas of cognition such as spatial short-term memory, working memory and selective attention correlated with the number of accidents, and might indicate a higher risk for driving errors and worse performance. These results show that driving ability is a complex skill with involvement of many different domains, which need further research.

Sialorrhea is defined as a chronic excessive flow of saliva from the mouth, often with adverse consequences for health and quality of life of patients. In addition to currently used non-drug treatment and systemic drugs, intraglandular Botulinum Neurotoxin A (BoNT/A) injections have been examined in case studies, controlled trials and clinical practice. Two pivotal Phase III trials recently led to market approval in the USA and EU for IncobotulinumtoxinA [Xeomin®, IncoBoNT/A, Clostridium botulinum neurotoxin type A (150 kD), free from complexing proteins, Merz Pharmaceuticals GmbH] for treatment of chronic sialorrhea in adults and pediatric patients. This review provides a multidisciplinary approach to discuss the current state of sialorrhea therapy as well as benefits and current limitations of BoNT/A injections. A consensus regarding treatment recommendations made available to physicians in Germany in 2022 has now been updated here for presentation to an international audience. This review provides a framework including a flow chart for patient selection, recommendations for dosing and the injection process, as well as a discussion of therapeutic goals, long-term benefits and safety aspects. This review is aimed at supporting physicians in developing multidisciplinary and individualized treatment approaches to achieve optimal benefits for patients.

In this study, we delve into the crucial influence of and enhancement by chiral environments on the discriminatory capabilities of resonance energy transfer. Firstly, we scrutinize the impact of a macroscopic chiral medium enveloping the interacting molecules; secondly, we probe the effect of a chiral mediating molecule in close proximity to the system. Importantly, our findings demonstrate that chiral environments not only modulate pre-existing discriminatory effects but also introduce novel mechanisms for discrimination. Central to our research is the application of an innovative model for chiral local-field corrections, which unveils a remarkable distance-dependent inversion of the discrimination dynamics. Our study extends beyond the confines of any specific molecular system, offering a comprehensive discussion of these diverse effects, thereby providing insights with broader implications. Finally, we present a comparative analysis across all studied systems, illustrating our insights by employing 3-methyl-cyclopentanone as an example molecule.

A one-year-old, female intact Samoyed, 12.5 kg, was presented with coughing for 2 weeks, progressive appendicular and axial muscle weakness, megaesophagus and labored breathing for 5 days. There was no improvement with standard treatment. Acquired myasthenia gravis was suspected and the dog was referred with increasing dyspnea. At presentation, the dog showed a severely reduced general condition, was non-ambulatory and showed abdominal and severely labored breathing. A marked hypercapnia (PvCO2 = 90.1 mmHg) was present in venous blood gas analysis. The serum anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody test was consistent with acquired myasthenia gravis (2.1 nmol/L). The dog was anesthetized with propofol and mechanically ventilated with a Hamilton C1 ventilator. Immunoadsorption was performed with the COM.TEC® and ADAsorb® platforms and a LIGASORB® adsorber to eliminate anti-acetylcholine receptor antibodies. Local anticoagulation was performed with citrate. Treatment time for immunoadsorption was 1.5 h with a blood flow of 50 mL/min. A total plasma volume of 1.2 L was processed. Further medical treatment included intravenous fluid therapy, maropitant, esomeprazole, antibiotic therapy for aspiration pneumonia and neostigmine 0.04 mg/kg intramuscularly every 6 h for treatment of acquired myasthenia gravis. Mechanical ventilation was stopped after 12 h. A percutaneous gastric feeding tube was inserted under endoscopic control on day 2 for further medical treatment and nutrition. A second treatment with immunoadsorption was performed on day 3. Again, a total plasma volume of 1.2 L was processed. Immediately after this procedure, the dog regained muscle strength and was able to stand and to walk. After 6 days, the dog was discharged from the hospital. This is the first report of immunoadsorption for emergency management of a dog with acute-fulminant acquired myasthenia gravis. Immunoadsorption may be an additional option for emergency treatment in dogs with severe signs of acquired myasthenia gravis.

Source radiation (radiation reaction) and vacuum field fluctuations can be seen as two inseparable contributions to processes such as spontaneous emission, the Lamb shift, or the Casimir force. Here, we propose how they can be individually probed and their space-time structure revealed in electro-optic sampling experiments. This allows us to experimentally study causality at the single-photon level and to reveal space- and timelike correlations in the quantum vacuum. A connection to the time-domain fluctuation-dissipation theorem is also made.

Synchronized oscillations within and between brain areas facilitate normal processing, but are often amplified in disease. A prominent example is the abnormally sustained beta-frequency (∼20 Hz) oscillations recorded from the cortex and subthalamic nucleus of Parkinson's disease patients. Computational modeling suggests that the amplitude of such oscillations could be modulated by applying stimulation at a specific phase. Such a strategy would allow selective targeting of the oscillation, with relatively little effect on other activity parameters. Here, activity was recorded from 10 awake, parkinsonian patients (6 male, 4 female human subjects) undergoing functional neurosurgery. We demonstrate that stimulation arriving on a particular patient-specific phase of the beta oscillation over consecutive cycles could suppress the amplitude of this pathophysiological activity by up to 40%, while amplification effects were relatively weak. Suppressive effects were accompanied by a reduction in the rhythmic output of subthalamic nucleus (STN) neurons and synchronization with the mesial cortex. While stimulation could alter the spiking pattern of STN neurons, there was no net effect on firing rate, suggesting that reduced beta synchrony was a result of alterations to the relative timing of spiking activity, rather than an overall change in excitability. Together, these results identify a novel intrinsic property of cortico-basal ganglia synchrony that suggests the phase of ongoing neural oscillations could be a viable and effective control signal for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. This work has potential implications for other brain diseases with exaggerated neuronal synchronization and for probing the function of rhythmic activity in the healthy brain.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT In Parkinson's disease (PD), movement impairment is correlated with exaggerated beta frequency oscillations in the cerebral cortex and subthalamic nucleus (STN). Using a novel method of stimulation in PD patients undergoing neurosurgery, we demonstrate that STN beta oscillations can be suppressed when consecutive electrical pulses arrive at a specific phase of the oscillation. This effect is likely because of interrupting the timing of neuronal activity rather than excitability, as stimulation altered the firing pattern of STN spiking without changing overall rate. These findings show the potential of oscillation phase as an input for "closed-loop" stimulation, which could provide a valuable neuromodulation strategy for the treatment of brain disorders and for elucidating the role of neuronal oscillations in the healthy brain.

Abstract Background Research focuses heavily upon the effect of strength and power training on change of direction performance. The objective of this scoping review is to highlight alternative approaches to training change of direction. Methods Four databases (Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science and SPORTDiscus) were searched with no date restrictions. To be included studies must (i) investigate change of direction performance following an intervention or investigate the relationships between variables of interest and change of direction performance; (ii) recruit participants > 18 years old; (iii) recruit participants involved in competitive sport. The majority of included studies investigated the effect of strength and/or power training, or, relationships between strength and/or power variables with change of direction performance. Results Despite fewer studies, alternative training methods resulted in greater improvements (compared with strength and/or power) in change of direction performance, with smaller training durations. Few studies included reactive agility as an outcome measure. Conclusion Despite much of the literature focusing on strength and/or power, there are alternative training modalities that demonstrate merit for improving change of direction performance. Future studies should investigate the effect of alternative training interventions on reactive agility performance, to provide a more valid indication of transfer to competition.

BackgroundChatbots are increasingly used to support COVID-19 vaccination programs. Their persuasiveness may depend on the conversation-related context. ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the moderating role of the conversation quality and chatbot expertise cues in the effects of expressing empathy/autonomy support using COVID-19 vaccination chatbots. MethodsThis experiment with 196 Dutch-speaking adults living in Belgium, who engaged in a conversation with a chatbot providing vaccination information, used a 2 (empathy/autonomy support expression: present vs absent) × 2 (chatbot expertise cues: expert endorser vs layperson endorser) between-subject design. Chatbot conversation quality was assessed through actual conversation logs. Perceived user autonomy (PUA), chatbot patronage intention (CPI), and vaccination intention shift (VIS) were measured after the conversation, coded from 1 to 5 (PUA, CPI) and from –5 to 5 (VIS). ResultsThere was a negative interaction effect of chatbot empathy/autonomy support expression and conversation fallback (CF; the percentage of chatbot answers “I do not understand” in a conversation) on PUA (PROCESS macro, model 1, B=–3.358, SE 1.235, t186=2.718, P=.007). Specifically, empathy/autonomy support expression had a more negative effect on PUA when the CF was higher (conditional effect of empathy/autonomy support expression at the CF level of +1SD: B=–.405, SE 0.158, t186=2.564, P=.011; conditional effects nonsignificant for the mean level: B=–0.103, SE 0.113, t186=0.914, P=.36; conditional effects nonsignificant for the –1SD level: B=0.031, SE=0.123, t186=0.252, P=.80). Moreover, an indirect effect of empathy/autonomy support expression on CPI via PUA was more negative when CF was higher (PROCESS macro, model 7, 5000 bootstrap samples, moderated mediation index=–3.676, BootSE 1.614, 95% CI –6.697 to –0.102; conditional indirect effect at the CF level of +1SD: B=–0.443, BootSE 0.202, 95% CI –0.809 to –0.005; conditional indirect effects nonsignificant for the mean level: B=–0.113, BootSE 0.124, 95% CI –0.346 to 0.137; conditional indirect effects nonsignificant for the –1SD level: B=0.034, BootSE 0.132, 95% CI –0.224 to 0.305). Indirect effects of empathy/autonomy support expression on VIS via PUA were marginally more negative when CF was higher. No effects of chatbot expertise cues were found. ConclusionsThe findings suggest that expressing empathy/autonomy support using a chatbot may harm its evaluation and persuasiveness when the chatbot fails to answer its users’ questions. The paper adds to the literature on vaccination chatbots by exploring the conditional effects of chatbot empathy/autonomy support expression. The results will guide policy makers and chatbot developers dealing with vaccination promotion in designing the way chatbots express their empathy and support for user autonomy.

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the effects of novel stimulation algorithms of deep brain stimulation (short pulse and directional stimulation) in the ventrointermediate thalamus and posterior subthalamic area (VIM/PSA-DBS) on tremor in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and to compare the effects with those in essential tremor (ET). We recruited six PD patients (70.8 ± 10.4 years) and seven ET patients (64.4 ± 9.9 years) with implanted VIM/PSA-DBS in a stable treatment condition (> 3 months postoperatively). Tremor severity and ataxia were assessed in four different stimulation conditions in a randomized order: DBS switched off (STIM OFF), omnidirectional stimulation with 60 µs (oDBS60), omnidirectional stimulation with 30 µs (oDBS30), directional stimulation at the best segment with 60 µs (dDBS60). In both patient groups, all three DBS stimulation modes reduced the total tremor score compared to STIM OFF, whereas stimulation-induced ataxia was reduced by oDBS30 and partially by dDBS60 compared to oDBS60. Tremor reduction was more pronounced in PD than in ET due to a limited DBS effect on intention and action-specific drawing tremor in ET. In PD and ET tremor, short pulse or directional VIM/PSA-DBS is an effective and well tolerated therapeutic option.
