12. Examining Feminist Consciousness in LGBTQ University Constituencies

Abstract

There is little data on the perception of LGBTQ constituencies toward feminism. This research team conducted focus groups on campus and within the surrounding community on perspectives of LGBTQ students, university-employed gay men, community-based transgender individuals, and community-based gay men toward feminism. The team analyzed findings using Bem's (1981) gender schema and Ridgeway's (2009) construct of individual, interactional, and institutional aspects of gender identity. The results show that most of the LGBTQ focus groups held positive views toward feminism, associating it with equality for all genders and social justice, except for community-based gay men, who negatively associated feminism solely with women's rights.

16. Exploring the Effect of NOS/NOT Learning and Dispositions on Undertaking Behavioural Actions in the Case of Natural Hazards

Abstract

This research seeks to evaluate students' intended behavioural actions in the event of a natural hazard, specifically hurricane, lightning, earthquake, or tsunami. A test instrument, measuring behavioural actions in the event of a natural hazard, and related NOS/NOT beliefs and dispositions, is utilized to collect data in Estonia, USA and Japan (N=2323). Results suggest that students responded adequately to tsunamis and lightning strikes, but to a lesser extent for hurricanes and earthquakes. Results also suggest a connection between dispositions and behavioural actions, but a lack of connection between generalised. NOS/NOT conceptualisations and behavioural actions. Results imply that students find it difficult to apply their learning to new situations requiring responsible behavioural actions. Implications indicate that NOS/NOT are not well understood, while responsible behavioural actions need to more heavily stressed in teaching about natural hazards involving the promotion of student values and attitudes with respect to Natural Disaster Reduction (NDR).

18. Staying in Their Own Lane: Ethical Reasoning among College Students Witnessing Cyberbullying

Abstract

Cyberbullying is pervasive on college campuses, but it is underdiscussed because the problem is denied by many students and usually invisible to school officials. This study examined how college students understand cyberbullying, their ethical reasoning about whether to help targeted peers, and their improvised helping strategies. In-depth interviews were conducted with 29 undergraduate students attending 7 colleges and universities in the northeastern United States. All of the participants had tried to help a targeted peer at least once in college, but were also asked to identify cases when they had not tried to help. Among the findings, the subtlety and ambiguity of cyberbullying in college made it difficult in many cases to appraise or name. Sharing racial identities and friendship ties were important factors for participants reasoning that they should help. They also expressed caution or skepticism about helping people they did not already know well or with whom they did not share social identities. When participants did help, they acted individually to support targeted peers rather than confronting peers or reporting incidents to administrators. They also acted in groups, organizing "circles of protection" for support and advocacy, as well as organizing retributive group punishments toward individuals associated with cyberbullying. Cyberbullying can both undermine and create opportunities for prosocial ethical learning among college students. Recommendations for campus organizing and dialogue are discussed.

28. Devising an Instrument for Determining Students' Preparedness for an Education through Science Learning Approach within the Topic of Natural Hazards

Abstract

As global average temperatures rise, there has been an increase in the frequency and magnitude of meteorological natural hazards. To survive in the world and thrive in the work place, students need to utilize educational skills (such as creative thinking, non-routine problem solving, collaboration and systems thinking) and become independent thinkers. Such learning can be encompassed under the heading of education through science. This study strives to develop a research instrument, which meaningfully determines student preparedness for dealing with natural hazards, based on their education through science learning, including student understanding of the Nature of Science (NOS) and Nature of Technology (NOT). The instrument, piloted with students in grades 7th/8th and 10th/11th in North America and Europe, is designed to allow comparisons across cultures. Outcomes show that the devised instrument is suitable for determining student competences and understanding of NOS/NOT associated with values and attitudes for students from different cultural backgrounds, and determining awareness of natural hazards and the use of appropriate behavioural actions related to disaster risk reduction for students from different cultural backgrounds.

34. Can Animal Assisted Interventions counteract apathy and improve physical activity levels in psychiatric patients with cognitive disability? A case study.

Abstract

Patients with psychiatric disorders experience a reduced quality of life also due to the antipsychotic drugs assumed, that negatively affects their cognitive abilities. A healthy lifestyle, such as physical activity, can improve both functional abilities and mental health of patients with a dual diagnosis, psychiatric and cognitive. Despite this knowledge, these people are more sedentary than the general population, probably because of their apathy, core aspects of the illness. Animal Assisted Interventions (AAIs) seem to be a valid tool to stimulate them to practice physical exercise thanks to the empathy generated by the relationship with the animal. This case study aims to evaluate the effect of 4 months AAIs on apathy and physical efficiency in 2 patients with dual diagnoses. Patient A and patient B, affected by psychiatric disorders and mild cognitive impairment, were recruited to perform an AAI, one with a dog and the other with a horse. At the end of the study data showed a decrease of apathy in both patients: −20,6% in patient A and −9.8% in patient B, as well as a reduction of psychiatric symptoms. Moreover, both patients improved the functional parameters evaluated through the Short Physical Battery Test (patient A = +33.3%; patient B = +28.6%). The preliminary results of this case report suggest that well-structured, individualized AAIs, with a horse or with a dog, could be considered as a useful adjunctive therapy to the usual treatment programs to improve both functional abilities and mental health in psychiatric patients. • Animal Assisted Interventions seem to counteract apathy in psychiatric patients with mild cognitive impairment. • Multidisciplinary teamwork can increase the involvement of psychiatric patients in rehabilitation programs. • Well-structured and individualized AAIs can improve the physical efficiency of psychiatric patients with dual diagnosis.
