Abstract Background Although the oral health status has improved in developed countries in recent years, oral diseases are still unequally distributed across socio-economic groups. Research on the impact of socio-economic factors on oral health care among older adults in Europe, including Portugal, remains limited. The main aim of this study was to investigate the association between socio-economic factors and oral health indicators in Portuguese older adults. Methods This retrospective cross-sectional study analyzed data from 915 participants (aged 65 years and older) from the third wave (2015–2016) of the Epidemiology of Chronic Diseases Cohort Study (EpiDoC), a population-based study. Socio-economic and demographic information, general health-related characteristics and oral health data (prosthetic need, oral hygiene frequency, and last dental procedure) were collected by questionnaire. Multivariate logistic and multinomial regression models analyzed the associations between socio-economic factors and oral health indicators. Results Participants with lower education level, perceived lower income and a fewer number of private sector appointments were more likely to have poor oral health (need for prosthetic treatment, less frequent oral hygiene, and tooth extraction as last dental procedure). Other factors found to be associated with oral health were sex, age, geographical area, smoking habits, and body mass index. Conclusions Socio-economic factors were associated with oral health in Portuguese older adults. These findings may contribute to future national public health strategies by expanding oral health services to ensure better access and coverage for at-risk groups.

Creative self-efficacy and social skills are two elements that can significantly enhance personal and professional development. The main objective of this research is to analyze the relations established between creative self-efficacy and social skills with other variables such as self-esteem, academic performance, and life satisfaction. The participants included in the methodology of this study are a total of 238 Portuguese university students. The instruments used were the Creative Self-Efficacy Scale, the Social Skills Questionnaire (CHASO), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and a series of ad hoc questions to assess academic performance. The results obtained indicate the existence of significant relations between creative self-efficacy and social skills, with the latter also being positively associated with self-esteem and life satisfaction. Analyses indicate that there are significant differences according to gender, academic performance, and the level of self-esteem of the participants. In addition, variables such as self-esteem, academic performance, and fluency act as predictors of life satisfaction. The importance of further exploring and understanding the complex relationship between creative self-efficacy, social skills, and individual well-being in the university context is discussed.

The present article charts the appearance and development of an Irish-Celtic (O’Flynn 2014) musical scene in Brazil, a small but tightly knit community of Brazilian amateur and professional musicians and music groups which constitutes a good example of what Mark Slobin named “affinity intercultures” (Slobin 1987). From an ethnomusicological perspective, it seeks to provide a portrait of such social and musical phenomenon based on a tripartite approach: 1) the discussion of international literature on the globalization of Irish traditional music as Celtic music around the turn of the Celtic Tiger period (Williams 2010) and the impacts of such process on Brazil; 2) the presentation and analysis of the results of an online survey conducted in the main Facebook community connected to the scene in order to characterize its main sociodemographic and musical characteristics; 3) the ethnographic description of the Rio de Janeiro chapter of such music scene based on its main musical event, the monthly session known as “Irish Session Rio.”

In the elderly, many chronic diseases and systemic conditions, medications, and salivary dysfunctions, mostly caused by therapeutic radiation and chemotherapy, are associated with hyposalivation and xerostomia, affecting quality of life. The purpose of this study was to identify and evaluate potential factors associated with xerostomia and/or hyposalivation in a local elderly population. Almost half of the participants had hyposalivation and some reported xerostomia. There was a significant association between hyposalivation and xerostomia. Hyposalivation was most common among women, those taking one or more types of medication simultaneously, those taking antidepressants, and participants with rheumatoid arthritis and depression. There was a tendency for individuals with poorer oral-health-related quality of life to exhibit hyposalivation.

There is compelling evidence that early school intervention programs enhance children’s development of life skills, with a positive knock-on effect on their behaviors and academic outcomes. To date, most universal interventions have displayed gains in children’s social-emotional competencies with a limited reduction in problem behaviors. This may depend on programs’ curricula focused to a greater extent on preschoolers’ social-emotional competencies rather than problem behaviors. Promoting Mental Health at Schools (PROMEHS) is a European, school-based, universal mental health program explicitly focused on both promoting students’ mental health and preventing negative conduct by adopting a whole-school approach. In this study, we set out to evaluate the effectiveness of the program for Italian and Portuguese preschoolers. We recruited 784 children (age range = 4–5 years), assigning them to either an experimental group (six months’ participation in the PROMEHS program under the guidance of their teachers, who had received ad hoc training) or a waiting list group (no intervention). We found that PROMEHS improved preschoolers’ social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies, prosocial behavior, and academic outcomes. The more practical activities were carried out at school, the more children’s SEL competencies increased, and the more their internalizing and externalizing behaviors decreased. Furthermore, marginalized and disadvantaged children were those who benefited most from the program, displaying both greater improvements in SEL and more marked decreases in internalizing problems compared to the rest of the sample.

ObjectivesThe consequences of long-lasting restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic have become a topical question in the latest research. The present study aims to analyze longitudinal changes in adolescents’ social emotional skills, resilience, and behavioral problems. Moreover, the study addresses the impact of adolescents’ social emotional learning on changes in their resilience and behavioral problems over the course of seven months of the pandemic.MethodsThe Time 1 (T1) and Time 2 (T2) measuring points were in October 2020 and May 2021, characterized by high mortality rates and strict restrictions in Europe. For all three countries combined, 512 questionnaires were answered by both adolescents (aged 11-13 and 14-16 years) and their parents. The SSIS-SEL and SDQ student self-report and parent forms were used to evaluate adolescents’ social emotional skills and behavioral problems. The CD-RISC-10 scale was administered to adolescents to measure their self-reported resilience. Several multilevel models were fitted to investigate the changes in adolescents’ social emotional skills, resilience, and behavioral problems, controlling for age and gender. Correlation analysis was carried out to investigate how changes in the adolescents’ social emotional skills were associated with changes in their resilience and mental health adjustment.ResultsComparing T1 and T2 evaluations, adolescents claim they have more behavioral problems, have less social emotional skills, and are less prosocial than perceived by their parents, and this result applies across all countries and age groups. Both informants agree that COVID-19 had a negative impact, reporting an increment in the mean internalizing and externalizing difficulties scores and reductions in social emotional skills, prosocial behavior, and resilience scores. However, these changes are not very conspicuous, and most of them are not significant. Correlation analysis shows that changes in adolescents’ social emotional skills are negatively and significantly related to changes in internalized and externalized problems and positively and significantly related to changes in prosocial behavior and resilience. This implies that adolescents who experienced larger development in social emotional learning also experienced more increase in resilience and prosocial behavior and a decrease in difficulties.ConclusionDue to its longitudinal design, sample size, and multi-informant approach, this study adds to a deeper understanding of the pandemic’s consequences on adolescents’ mental health.

AbstractIntroduction All-ceramic restorations currently dominate the market of indirect restorative materials due to their biocompatibility, longevity and superior aesthetics [1]. Silica-based ceramics, such as leucite, carry the advantage of being receptive to surface treatments, making them bondable to tooth substrates [2]. However, a standardised application protocol regarding silane coupling agents is lacking. Such step is critical to ensure durability of the restoration placed in situ. Post-etch cleaning and silane application have been proven to increase bond strength, however, this step varies for each material [3]. The aim of this research was to assess the influence of different types of silane coupling agents and respective application times on the bond strength of the ceramic-resin interface.Materials and methods Ten leucite reinforced glass ceramic blocks (IPS Empress CAD LT BL4/C 14) were divided into equal halves. Of the samples obtained, 6 were randomly divided into three groups according to the silane used: G1 BIS-Silane (Bisco, Schaumburg, IL, USA); G2 ESPE Sil Silane Coupling Agent (3 M ESPE AG, Seefeld, Germany); G3 Monobond Plus (Ivoclar-Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein). Each was then divided into two subgroups, according to the surface conditioning time: T1 (1 min.) or T2 (5 min.). Each block was acid etched (HF 9.5% − 1 min), post-etching cleaned (OPA 37.5% − 1 min; ultrasonication − 2 min.) and silanized. Heat treatment was carried out at 100 °C (1 min.). Then a thin layer of Optibond FL (Kerr) adhesive was applied and each block was adhered to pre-heated resin at 55 °C. The samples were light cured for 40 s on each side (1200 mW/cm2). Samples were sectioned into microspecimens (1 ± 0.2 mm2) that were subjected to aging (10,000 thermocycles − 5 and 55 °C). The microspecimens were tested in tension at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min, until they debonded. AbstractIntroduction Conservative Dentistry has gradually replaced traditional invasive procedures with minimally invasive techniques that rely on adhesion to tooth substrates [1]. Due to these recent developments, indirect restorations are increasingly used in contemporary practice. In order to bond these restorations, a vast choice of materials exist, and these include flowable resin composites [2,3]. However, studies featuring these materials are seldom found [3]. The aim of this in vitro pilot study was to evaluate and compare the microleakage of indirect restorations luted with a flowable composite and different luting agents.Materials and methods This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Egas Moniz, CRL. Thirty human molars were randomly divided between 3 groups (n = 10) according to the luting agent used: resin cement Bifix QM (VOCO GmbH, Cuxhaven, Germany) (G1), pre-heated resin composite Z100 MP Restorative (3 M ESPE) (G2) and flowable composite GrandioSO Flow (VOCO GmbH, Cuxhaven, Germany) (G3). Standardised class V cavities were prepared in the buccal surface and immediate dentine sealing was carried out with Optibond FL (Kerr). Composite restorations were made using a semi-direct technique with GrandioSO (VOCO GmbH, Cuxhaven, Germany). After 24 h cavities and restorations were pre-treated and adhesively luted according to the groups. After finishing and polishing, specimens were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h. After thermal aging (500 cycles at 5–55 °C) teeth were sealed and immersed in 0.5% basic fuchsine dye for 4 h. Each specimen was then sectioned vertically and microleakage was assessed and classified for both occlusal and cervical margins according to ISO/TS 11405:2015. The results were statistically analysed by Kruskal–Wallis (KW) test and binomial data analysis, at a significance level of 5% (SPSS 24.0).Results There were no significant differences in microleakage scores between the tested groups (p > .05, KW). All the groups scored more leakage in cervical margins. Binomial analysis confirmed that the success rate was material and margin dependent. The probability of failure of a cervical margin bonded to Z100 (G2) and to GrandioSO Flow (G3) using a semi-direct technique was significantly higher than 50% (p = .021) and (p = .002) respectively. Z100 had 100% failure rate in the cervical margin.Discussion and conclusions Longevity of a bonded interface is determined by sealing and microleakage. When this interface is compromised, failure of the restoration may happen [4]. Microleakage occurred in composite restorations made semi-directly the same way amongst the different materials used for bonding. However, cervical margins bonded with resin composites carry a greater chance of failure.

AbstractIntroduction Due to an increase in patient awareness and search for aesthetic treatments, dental bleaching is a frequent and safe procedure in clinical practice for the removal of stains [1]. Bleaching agents are known to adversely affect the bond strength between resin composite and tooth surface, when adhesive procedures are performed immediately after tooth bleaching [2]. The reduction in bond strength is related to the presence of residual oxygen, a sub product of hydrogen peroxide that remains on the tooth surface and which may interfere with infiltration of the resin in the dentine tubules and inhibit the polymerisation of resin monomers [3]. Antioxidant agents like sodium ascorbate, grape seed extract and green tea may be used as an alternative to delay the restorative procedure due to their potential as reversers of these adverse effects [2]. This study aims to assess the influence of different antioxidant agents on the bond strength of restored bleached teeth.Materials and methods The present study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Instituto Universitário Egas Moniz. Fifteen human permanent molars were sectioned into identical halves that were randomly distributed between five groups (n = 6): unbleached control group (CG), bleaching + resin composite bonded immediately (G1), bleaching + sodium ascorbate (G2), bleaching + grape seed extract (G3) and bleaching + green tea (G4). G1, G2, G3 and G4 were bleached for 4 h/day for a 7-day period. After bleaching, G1 samples were immediately restored with an adhesive system and a resin composite, in G2 samples a 10% sodium ascorbate gel was applied, in G3 a 5% grape seed extract and in G4 a 5% green tea, all applied for 15 min. After these antioxidants, G2, G3 and G4 were immediately restored. After 24 h, samples were sectioned in order to obtain 1.0 (± 0.3) mm2 microspecimens. The microspecimens were tested in a universal testing machine at a speed of 0.5 mm/min. Data were analysed by using a two-way ANOVA, at a significance level of 5%.Results G1 group (bleaching only) recorded the lowest mean bond strength value (9.5 (± 1.2) MPa) and it was significantly lower than the control group (CG) (19.3 (± 2.7) MPa) (p = .001). AbstractIntroduction Dental bleaching is regarded as a safe medical treatment for those who want to achieve a brighter smile. Bleaching is a chemical process in which oxidation occurs, affecting the way teeth absorb or reflect light [1]. Oxidative ability of bleaching agents and the presence of free hydroxyl radicals in the apatite modifies the mineral and protein composition of the enamel increasing its solubility. This renders the enamel surface adverse to the best bonding conditions [2,3]. Some strategies, including antioxidants such as sodium ascorbate, are capable of re-establishing the bond strength to nearest normal values, showing to be an effective method when used immediately after dental bleaching treatment [4,5]. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of an antioxidant on the microtensile bond strength of bleached teeth that were subsequently restored, comparing different waiting times for the procedure.Materials and methods Thirty human permanent molars were sectioned into halves (n = 60), and randomly distributed between three groups: control (CG), bleaching (G1) and bleaching + sodium ascorbate (G2). Groups G1 and G2 were bleached 2 h/day for a 7-day period. After bleaching, G2 received a 10% sodium ascorbate gel for 50 min. In each group, samples were divided in equal parts where one part (n = 5) was immediately restored with an adhesive system and a resin composite (T0) and the other half (n = 5) was stored, in artificial saliva at 37 °C, and restored after 7 days (T1). After 24 h, samples were sectioned into microspecimens (∼1mm2) and tested at a crosshead head-speed of 0.5 mm/min. Data analysis was performed using a factorial ANOVA, at a significance level of 5%.Results Groups in which sodium ascorbate was applied presented mean µTBS values (G2T0: 22.1 ± 3.3 MPa; G2T1: 24.5 ± 2.9 MPa) significantly higher than the bleaching only and immediately restored group (G1T0, 10.9 ± 3.3 MPa) (p .05).Discussion and conclusions Sodium ascorbate is capable of capturing free oxygen radicals retained on the enamel. These promote decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, which in turn prevents the complete polymerisation of the adhesive system thus affecting bond strength [2,5]. The application of sodium ascorbate is an effective alternative to improve bond strength when compared to a waiting period before the restorative procedure.

This study aims to comprehensively examine the determinants of household poverty in Brazil, placing a specific emphasis on the heads of households as the primary unit of analysis. Household poverty is a critical and multifaceted issue in developing countries, a reality that holds true for Brazil as well. Understanding the intricate web of factors that contribute to household poverty is of paramount importance to policymakers, researchers, and advocates dedicated to poverty alleviation and socioeconomic development. Household poverty remains a persistent challenge in Brazil, with far-reaching social and economic consequences. To address this issue effectively, it is essential to identify the factors that contribute to poverty among households, particularly those led by individuals who are the primary income earners. These households often face unique economic and social challenges that demand targeted interventions. To analyze household poverty determinants, this study utilizes data from the "Pesquisa Nacional por Amostras de Domicílios Contínua" (Continuous National Household Sample Survey) (PNADC). The dataset provides comprehensive information on the individual characteristics of the household head and household-level attributes, offering a nuanced view of the factors at play. A probit model is employed to estimate the probability of a household head experiencing poverty, allowing for a examination of various factors. The research findings reveal several significant determinants of household poverty in Brazil. Firstly, households led by men are found to be less likely to be in a situation of poverty, shedding light on gender-related disparities in income and opportunities. Secondly, households with heads who have attained higher levels of education exhibit a lower probability of being in poverty, underscoring the importance of education as a pathway out of poverty. Moreover, urban households are found to be less prone to poverty compared to their rural counterparts, since households led by individuals who work in agricultural-related activities are more likely to experience poverty. This emphasizes the need for targeted rural development strategies. Additionally, households located in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil face a higher likelihood of poverty, possibly due to regional economic disparities that require specific policy attention. These findings have important policy implications for poverty alleviation efforts in Brazil. Policymakers should consider targeted interventions that focus on improving access to education, particularly in regions with higher poverty rates, as education is a powerful tool for poverty reduction. Efforts to promote gender equality and enhance economic opportunities in rural areas are also essential to address the diverse causes of poverty. Additionally, regional disparities in poverty should be addressed through comprehensive regional development initiatives that take into account the unique challenges faced by different areas of the country. Our results also highlight the importance of community-specific social programs, including conditional-cash transfers and incentives for childhood education, which can play a pivotal role in breaking the cycle of poverty in Brazil's diverse communities. This work gives a first insight into the potential of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to provide high-resolution vertical profiles for land surface temperature (LST) retrieval from thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing. WRF numerical simulations were conducted to downscale NCEP Climate Forecast System Version 2 (CFSv2) reanalysis profiles, using two nested grids with horizontal resolutions of 12 km (G12) and 3 km (G03). We investigated the utility of these profiles for the atmospheric correction of TIR data and LST estimation, using the moderate resolution atmospheric transmission (MODTRAN) model and the Landsat 8 TIRS10 band. The accuracy evaluation was performed using 27 clear-sky cases over a radiosonde station in Southern Brazil. We included in the comparative analysis NASA’s Atmospheric Correction Parameter Calculator (ACPC) web-tool and profiles obtained directly from the NCEP CFSv2 reanalysis. The atmospheric parameters from ACPC, followed by those from CFSv2, were in better agreement with parameters calculated using in situ radiosondes. When applied into the radiative transfer equation (RTE) to retrieve LST, the best results (RMSE) were, in descending order: CFSv2 (0.55 K), ACPC (0.56 K), WRF G12 (0.79 K), and WRF G03 (0.82 K). Our findings suggest that there is no special need to increase the horizontal resolution of reanalysis profiles aiming at RTE-based LST retrieval. However, the WRF results were still satisfactory and promising, encouraging further assessments. We endorse the use of the well-known ACPC and recommend the NCEP CFSv2 profiles for TIR atmospheric correction and LST single-channel retrieval.

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a rustic horticultural crop with high production potential. However, the crop is susceptible to many pests and diseases. The objective of this study was to evaluate 10 genotypes of sweet potato regarding their yield and resistance to soil insects, under Brazilian cerrado soil conditions. Genotypes were selected from the Sweet Potato Germplasm Bank of Embrapa Hortaliças. The experiment was conducted at Água Limpa Farm, belonging to University of Brasilia (UnB), and consisted of a randomized block design, with 10 treatments (genotypes), 10 plants per plot, and four replications. The following traits were analyzed: number of perforations per root, incidence of roots injured by insects, plant resistance degree, root shape, total and marketable root yields, root peel color, root pulp color, pulp total soluble solids, pulp titratable acidity, pulp TSS/TA ratio, pulp moisture, and pulp starch yield. Genotype CNPH 53 (26.78 t ha-1) presented total root yield greater than the commercial variety Brazlândia Rosada (17.54 t ha-1). Genotype Santa Sofia (11.77 t ha-1) and Brazlândia (13.5 t ha-1) had similar marketable root yields. CNPH 53 showed the best agronomic performance, exhibiting moderate susceptibility to soil insects and root shape meeting the market standards. It also had low pulp TA (2.53%); high pulp TSS (12.25 °Brix) and pulp TSS/AT ratio (4.24); pulp moisture content close to 70%; and the highest pulp starch content (11.98%). The traits number of perforations per root, root shape, and pulp TA presented heritability values close to 70%. Marketable root yield, pulp moisture, and pulp starch content demonstrated heritability values greater than 90% and CVG/CVE greater than 1.

The sensitivity of numerical simulations of the low level jet stream (LLJS) in South America to the choice of parameterization schemes for the planetary boundary layer (PBL) and for cumulus convection using the Advanced Research core of the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model was assessed for two cases in which the development of Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCSs) was observed in the La Plata Basin at the exit of the LLJS. The MCSs developed under distinct synoptic forcing. Overall, the general area over the La Plata Basin where the wind profiles met LLJS criteria was larger in the situation with stronger frontal forcing. Regarding the impact of the choice of the PBL parameterization scheme upon the simulated LLJS, the nonlocal Yonsei University (YSU) scheme displayed slightly better results for most simulations regardless of the cumulus parameterization scheme utilized. In fact, the characterization of the LLJS in the simulations exhibited no significant sensitivity to the choice of the cumulus parameterization. In situations under stronger [weaker] frontal forcing, less [more] dispersion among the simulations was found regarding the identification of the LLJS.

Trichoderma is the most studied and used fungal agent in biological disease control worldwide. Its prospection is a necessary routine, in order to select more effective and specific strains for the different existing agro pathosystems. This work reports the in vitro antagonism (Mycelial Growth Inhibition - MGI) of five Trichoderma isolates, obtained from rhizospheric and organic soil of medicinal plants cultivated in Brazil, to five different phytopathogenic fungi and their molecular identification based on actin (act), calmaldulin (cal), rDNA gene (ITS) and translation elongation factor 1-α (tef1-α). Regarding the fungus Macrophomina phaseolina, the MGI varied between 63.33 and 67.03%; for Fusarium verticillioides between 67.20 and 85.92%; Phaeocytostroma sacchari between 84.00 and 92.90%; in the case of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, the inhibition was total (100%), and for Sclerotium rolfsii, the antagonism was between 62.03 and 79.07%. According to the molecular phylogeny performed, concatenated analysis of the genetic markers revealed that the five antagonist fungi belong to the Trichoderma afroharzianum species. It is concluded that the T. afroharzianum isolates evaluated showed good levels of in vitro control of the plant pathogenic fungi in question and will be studied via in vivo tests and in plant growth promotion.
