Objective: To evaluate the use of the COPD-PS ques-tionnaire and the Vitalograph COPD-6 portable devi-ce, as a strategy for the early diagnosis of chronic obs-tructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in two primary care units of the state social enterprise (ESE): Metrosa-lud, Medellin-Colombia in 2017. Methods: A cross-sectional study to early detection of COPD, in people older than 35 years without previous diagnosis of the disease or other underlying respira-tory diseases. The “COPD-PS” case detection-scree-ning test was applied for identify respiratory risk fac-tors and then the forced expiratory volume test (VEF1/VEF6) with the portable device Vitalograph-COPD-6. Results: Of 1485 COPD-PS screening tests, 198 had a score equal to or greater than four, so they were tes-ted with the Vitalograph device, of which 147 (74.2%) were positive. Discussion: The underreporting of Chronic Obstruc-tive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is currently descri-bed as a serious problem worldwide. The use of the COPD-PS questionnaire for the identification of pa-tients with risk factors and the Vitalograph COPD-6 as a lung function test, can be useful tools to implement an effective strategy to reduce COPD underreporting.

Introduction: Knowing the variables influencing the labor performance allows to provide the elements that will contribute to the work satisfaction. Objective: To examine the perception of the performed work satisfaction as well as the motivational factors among the personnel of the healthcare service suppliers in the Aburrá Valley, Colombia during 2011. Ma terials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study and the population studied was the personnel working in the said companies. The total sample included 224 employees and 69 institutions randomly selected. Results: 52.2% of the interviewees stated to feel very satisfied with the work they performed at the institution and felt motivated mostly by the working environment (70.5%) and then by the wage and the position in equal percentages (49.6%). It was also found a greater satisfaction due to the work performed by the assistant employees as compared to those in managerial positions (p = 0.018). The less motivational factors included: the opportunities for promotion, bonuses and acknowledgements. Conclusion: A great deal of employees feel satisfied with their performed work and the working environment stands out as the main motivational factor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The feeling of loneliness is inherent in the human condition, and is considered a public health issue that is directly related to welfare. The aim of this study was to identify the sociodemographic predictor variables of loneliness in the elderly. Methodology: Cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 869 adults aged 55 and older who attended senior citizen groups in Medellin in 2010. Results: The model explained the 21.6% of variance in the scale scores for loneliness. The main predictor variables for family loneliness was the number of people whom they live with; for marital and social loneliness was marital status; and for crisis of adaptation was socioeconomic status. Conclusions: The demographic variable that best predicts loneliness is marital status, appearing in different types of loneliness and global loneliness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: identifying the knowledge level of the employees regarding the research policies of mid and high complexity healthcare facilities in the Aburra Valley, Colombia. Methodology: cross-section research, with surveys for 224 employees of the healthcare providing institutions of high (52) and mid (322) complexity, both public and private, in 2011. Results: regarding the knowledge about the existence of research policies, we found that it is higher in the employees of high complexity institutions (p = 0.000). Over 70% of the employees surveyed showed their interest in working on research projects. Conclusion: public high complexity healthcare facilities showed more developments on research and we found great interest of the employees of the health sector on research, regardless of the complexity level, the type of facility, and education level. Objective: to explore how the adult faces and / or would face the feeling of loneliness. Methods: cross sectional study. An open question was performed to 180 adults to identify possible ways to address loneliness, if it's the occurring or if it occurs at some point in life. Results: five categories were obtained about the way they faced or would face loneliness: search company (36%), distraction (21.9%), acceptance (14.6%), God (10.1%) and other (17.4%). Conclusions: facing loneliness by adults is more focused on active forms, visualizing the need to connect external and internal resources in daily life to promote the individual potential, and therefore they are more likely to face their feelings of loneliness.
