China's higher education expansion policy implemented in 1999 has substantially increased higher education opportunities. This paper investigates whether rural students do benefit more from the expansion policy and achieve educational equity between urban and rural areas. Based on the four waves of nationwide micro survey data, collected in 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015, we find that the expansion policy increases the rural-urban gap in higher education participation in the short- and medium-term, but reduces the educational inequality in the long-term. However, when we examine the impact of the expansion policy on access to elite higher education, the results show that the expansion policy is not conducive to reducing the rural-urban gap in elite higher education participation. Therefore, to achieve educational equity between rural and urban areas, compensation policies should be designed to benefit rural students.

BACKGROUND. Improving and predicting tumor response to immunotherapy remains challenging. Combination therapy with a transforming growth factor-[beta] receptor (TGF-[beta]R) inhibitor that targets cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) is promising for the enhancement of efficacy of immunotherapies. However, the effect of this approach in clinical trials is limited, requiring in vivo methods to better assess tumor responses to combination therapy. METHODS. We measured CAFs in vivo using the [sup.68]Ga-labeled fibroblast activation protein inhibitor-04 ([sup.68]Ga- FAPI-04) for PET/CT imaging to guide the combination of TGF-[beta] inhibition and immunotherapy. One hundred thirty-one patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) underwent [sup.68]Ga-FAPI and [sup.18]F- fluorodeoxyglucose ([sup.18]F-FDG) PET/CT imaging. The relationship between uptake of [sup.68]Ga-FAPI and tumor immunity was analyzed in patients. Mouse cohorts of metastatic CRC were treated with the TGF-[beta]R inhibitor combined with KN046, which blocks programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) and CTLA-4, followed by [sup.68]Ga-FAPI and [sup.18]F-FDG micro-PET/CT imaging to assess tumor responses. RESULTS. Patients with metastatic CRC demonstrated high uptake rates of [sup.68]Ga-FAPI, along with suppressive tumor immunity and poor prognosis. The TGF-[beta]R inhibitor enhanced tumor- infiltrating T cells and significantly sensitized metastatic CRC to KN046. [sup.68]Ga-FAPI PET/CT imaging accurately monitored the dynamic changes of CAFs and tumor response to combined the TGF-[beta]R inhibitor with immunotherapy. CONCLUSION. [sup.68]Ga-FAPI PET/CT imaging is powerful in assessing tumor immunity and the response to immunotherapy in metastatic CRC. This study supports future clinical application of [sup.68]Ga- FAPI PET/CT to guide precise TGF-[beta] inhibition plus immunotherapy in CRC patients, recommending [sup.68]Ga-FAPI and [sup.18]F-FDG dual PET/CT for CRC management. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are unstable reactive molecules that are toxic to cells. Regulation of ROS homeostasis is crucial to protect cells from dysfunction, senescence, and death. In plant leaves, ROS are mainly generated from chloroplasts and are tightly temporally restricted by the circadian clock. However, little is known about how ROS homeostasis is regulated in nonphotosynthetic organs, such as petals. Here, we showed that hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels exhibit typical circadian rhythmicity in rose (Rosa hybrida) petals, consistent with the measured respiratory rate. RNA-seq and functional screening identified a B-box gene, RhBBX28, whose expression was associated with H2O2 rhythms. Silencing RhBBX28 accelerated flower senescence and promoted H2O2 accumulation at night in petals, while overexpression of RhBBX28 had the opposite effects. RhBBX28 influenced the expression of various genes related to respiratory metabolism, including the TCA cycle and glycolysis, and directly repressed the expression of SUCCINATE DEHYDROGENASE 1, which plays a central role in mitochondrial ROS (mtROS) homeostasis. We also found that PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTOR8 (RhPIF8) could activate RhBBX28 expression to control H2O2 levels in petals and thus flower senescence. Our results indicate that the circadian-controlled RhPIF8-RhBBX28 module is a critical player that controls flower senescence by governing mtROS homeostasis in rose.

The phytohormone auxin plays a pivotal role in floral meristem initiation and gynoecium development, but whether and how auxin controls floral organ identity remain largely unknown. Here, we found that auxin levels influence organ specification, and changes in auxin levels influence homeotic transformation between petals and stamens in rose (Rosa hybrida). The PIN-FORMED-LIKES (PILS) gene RhPILS1 governs auxin levels in floral buds during floral organogenesis. RhAUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR 18 (RhARF18), whose expression decreases with increasing auxin content, encodes a transcriptional repressor of the C-class gene RhAGAMOUS (RhAG), and controls stamen-petal organ specification in an auxin-dependent manner. Moreover, RhARF18 physically interacts with the histone deacetylase (HDA) RhHDA6. Silencing of RhHDA6 increases H3K9/K14 acetylation levels at the site adjacent to the RhARF18-binding site in the RhAG promoter and reduces petal number, indicating that RhARF18 might recruit RhHDA6 to the RhAG promoter to reinforce the repression of RhAG transcription. We propose a model for how auxin homeostasis controls floral organ identity via regulating transcription of RhAG.

A major challenge in chemotherapy is chemotherapy resistance in cells lacking p53. Here we demonstrate that NIP30, an inhibitor of the oncogenic REGγ-proteasome, attenuates cancer cell growth and sensitizes p53-compromised cells to chemotherapeutic agents. NIP30 acts by binding to REGγ via an evolutionarily-conserved serine-rich domain with 4-serine phosphorylation. We find the cyclin-dependent phosphatase CDC25A is a key regulator for NIP30 phosphorylation and modulation of REGγ activity during the cell cycle or after DNA damage. We validate CDC25A-NIP30-REGγ mediated regulation of the REGγ target protein p21 in vivo using p53-/- and p53/REGγ double-deficient mice. Moreover, Phosphor-NIP30 mimetics significantly increase the growth inhibitory effect of chemotherapeutic agents in vitro and in vivo. Given that NIP30 is frequently mutated in the TCGA cancer database, our results provide insight into the regulatory pathway controlling the REGγ-proteasome in carcinogenesis and offer a novel approach to drug-resistant cancer therapy.

This study aimed to investigate whether and how Moloney murine leukemia virus integration site 1 (Bmi-1) plays a role in the regulation of glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) in gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC). GAC and matched noncancerous tissues were obtained from GAC patients who underwent surgical treatment at the China-Japan Union Hospital, Jilin University (Changchun, Jilin, China). The human GAC cell line AGS and the gastric epithelial cell line GES-1 were used for in vitro studies. BALB/c nude mice were used for in vivo studies. The Bmi-1 and GLUT1 protein levels were significantly greater in human tissues from GAC patients and AGS cells in comparison with controls. Silencing of Bmi-1 resulted in significant decrease in glucose uptake, lactate levels, and GLUT1 expression. In vivo 18F-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) imaging studies indicated that the nude mice bearing xenografts of AGS cells treated with Bmi-1-specific small interfering RNA (siRNA) had a significantly lower maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) in comparison with the control mice. Thus, Bmi-1 directly upregulates GLUT1 gene expression, through which it is involved in enhancing glucose uptake in GAC. The results also provide scientific evidence for 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging to evaluate Bmi-1 and glucose uptake in GAC.

Abstract Background Chemsex is a novel phenomenon referring to the use of drugs, including crystal methamphetamine, gammahydroxybutyric acid (GHB)/gamma-butyrolactone (GABA) and mephedrone, to facilitate, enhance, and prolong the sexual experience in men who have sex with men in large cities internationally. There is a growing concern about chemsex and fatal cases among people living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy. This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of chemsex-related intoxications. Material and methods An observational study was conducted in people living with HIV who were admitted for chemsex-related intoxications in an emergency department of a teaching hospital in Barcelona, Spain, from 2018 to 2020. Severe acute intoxications were defined according to the Poisoning Severity Score. Results One hundred and fifteen male patients with a median age of 35.6±7 years were included in the study:15 (13.1%) in 2018, 32 (27.8%) in 2019 and 68 (59.1%) in 2020. All patients had stable housing, 107(93.0%) were Spanish citizen and 32 (27.8%) had mental health disorders. Median CD4 lymphocyte count was 624 (500–765) cells/mm3 and 99 (86.1%) had HIV-1 RNA suppression. Poly-drug use was observed in 51(44.3%) cases and methamphetamine in 75(65,2%) and gammahydroxibutiric acid in 68 (59.1%) were the main drugs used. Potential drug interactions due to the inhibition of cytochrome P450 by antiviral therapy was determined in 36 (31.3%) patients. Severe intoxications cases affecting neurologic and respiratory systems were diagnosed in 12 (10.4%) patients and no patient died. CD4 cell counts ≤500 cells (O.R.:4.2; C.I.95%:1.2–14.6) and mental health disorders (O.R.: 2.9; C. I 95%: 0.8–9.9) were associated with severe acute drug intoxications in the bivariate analyses. Conclusions Chemsex-related intoxications are an increasing clinical problem in people living with HIV. Chemsex should be routinely screened and addressed in clinical practice, particularly for people with mental illness and low CD4 cell counts, who are at higher risk for severe intoxications.

Ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs) have gained substantial attention as emerging electronic devices such as nonvolatile memory and artificial synapse, owing to their low power consumption and nonvolatile properties. In this work, a 2D semiconductor (2DS)/α‐In2Se3/metal FTJ structure is proposed that combines a semiconductor ferroelectric material and a semiconducting electrode. The incorporation of 2DS not only enhances the barrier height modulation but also provides an effective approach to mitigate the thermionic current leakage. Notably, the proposed MoS2/α‐In2Se3/Ti FTJs exhibit both room‐temperature negative differential resistance (NDR) effect and high tunnel electroresistance (TER) exceeding 104 simultaneously. Furthermore, the versatility of this structure extends to several 2DS (including MoS2, PdSe2, and SnSe2) and graphene electrodes to rationalize both tunneling and thermionic current transport mechanisms. The proposed 2DS/α‐In2Se3/metal FTJs present great superiority over existing structures in terms of robustness, temperature independence, high TER, and versatility for various potential application scenarios. The silicifying peptide R5 (H‐SSKKSGSYSGSKGSKRRIL‐OH) derived from diatoms is extensively investigated, but the mechanism underlying silica synthesis by R5 or R5‐alike peptides is still poorly understood, limiting the design of silicifying peptides Herein, machine learning techniques are used to design peptides with silicifying functionality. Utilizing a comprehensive dataset of peptides and their corresponding silicification outcomes, a deep learning model based on antimicrobial peptide migration learning is created. This model exhibits the remarkable capability to accurately predict peptide sequences with a high potential for facilitating silica formation. A selection of artificially designed peptides can catalyze the biomimetic synthesis of nanosilica, some of which demonstrate better catalytic activity with a wider pH range and faster reaction rate compared with the peptide R5. Additionally, the designed peptide is used to wrap the model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum with nanosilica coatings, resulting in a significant enhancement in the UV resistance of cells. The new silicified peptides are highly significant for advancing the understanding of the silica synthesis mechanism in diatoms, and the encapsulation of P. tricornutum has potential benefits in the development of new biosensors. Based on the 2004–2015 China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) data, this article examines the effect of minimum wages on household income distribution. The results show that minimum wage increases significantly reduce the probability of per capita household net income falling below the poverty threshold, indicating that minimum wage can play a role in poverty reduction. Furthermore, we find that minimum wages significantly reduce the probability of per capita household income being 0–3 times lower than the poverty threshold, but have little effect on households with per capita net income more than 3 times the poverty threshold, which means that minimum wage increases can reduce household income inequality. We also find heterogeneous effects of minimum wage increases on household income distribution across gender, education, hukou, and age of household heads. Finally, we show that minimum wage increases play a role in regulating household income distribution by increasing the wages of employed individuals in households. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel boron‐containing novolac (triphenyl borate‐formaldehyde resin, TPBF) was synthesized. The structure, thermoplasticity, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution of TPBF have been characterized with FT‐IR, melt viscosity, 13C NMR and GPC. The thermal stability of TPBF was investigated by TGA, indicating the thermal stability of TPBF was much better than that of normal novolac (phenol‐formaldehyde resin, PF). TPBFs with different molar ratios of formaldehyde to benzene ring in triphenyl borate (TPB) were also synthesized and compared for molecular size, polydispersity and thermal stability. Further, the thermal degradation kinetics of TPBFs and PF were studied by TGA using Madhusdanan‐Krishnan‐Ninan method and the activation energies were calculated at different degradation stages. It was found that the thermal degradations of TPBFs and PF are a multistage reaction and the degradation reactions in every stage follow the first order reaction mechanism. Finally, the activation energies of thermal degradations of novolac increase with the introduction of boron, the progress of degradation reaction as well as the increase of molar ratios. As the most promising advanced energy storage system, lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are highly favored by the researchers because of their advantages of high energy density (2500 W h kg−1), low cost and non-pollution. However, the low conductivity, volume expansion of sulfur, and shuttle effect are still the great hindrance to the practical application of LSBs. Herein, the above problems can be addressed through the following strategies: (1) Hollow carbon microspheres with high specific surface area were constructed as sulfur hosts to increase sulfur loading while also being able to enhance the physical adsorption of polysulfides; (2) the loading of Mn3O4 particles on the basis of hollow carbon microspheres facilitates the capture and adsorption of polysulfides; (3) the hollow carbon sphere structure as a conductive network can provide more pathways for rapid electrical/ionic transport and also accelerate electrolyte wetting. Moreover, the thinner shell of hollow carbon microsphere is conducive to ion diffusion and speed up the reaction rate. Thus, the NHCS/Mn3O4/S composites exhibit a high discharge specific capacity of 1010.3 mAh g−1 at first and still maintained a reversible capacity of 269.2 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles. Intercellular communication often relies on exosomes as messengers and is critical for cancer metastasis in hypoxic tumor microenvironment. Some circular RNAs (circRNAs) are enriched in cancer cell‐derived exosomes, but little is known about their ability to regulate intercellular communication and cancer metastasis. Here, by systematically analyzing exosomes secreted by non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells, a hypoxia‐induced exosomal circPLEKHM1 is identified that drives NSCLC metastasis through polarizing macrophages toward to M2 type. Mechanistically, exosomal circPLEKHM1 promoted PABPC1‐eIF4G interaction to facilitate the translation of the oncostatin M receptor (OSMR), thereby promoting macrophage polarization for cancer metastasis. Importantly, circPLEKHM1‐targeted therapy significantly reduces NSCLC metastasis in vivo. circPLEKHM1 serves as a prognostic biomarker for metastasis and poor survival in NSCLC patients. This study unveils a new circRNA‐mediated mechanism underlying how cancer cells crosstalk with macrophages within the hypoxic tumor microenvironment to promote metastasis, highlighting the importance of exosomal circPLEKHM1 as a prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for lung cancer metastasis. Bioinspired structural color represents a burgeoning field that draws upon principles, strategies, and concepts derived from biological systems to inspire the design of novel technologies or products featuring reversible color changing mechanisms, with significant potential applications for camouflage, sensors, anticounterfeiting, etc. This mini-review focuses specifically on the research progress of bioinspired structural color in the realm of camouflage. Firstly, it discusses fundamental mechanisms of coloration in biological systems, encompassing pigmentation, structural coloration, fluorescence, and bioluminescence. Subsequently, it delineates three modulation strategies—namely, photonic crystals, film interference, and plasmonic modulation—that contribute to the development of bioinspired structural color materials or devices. Moreover, the review critically assesses the integration of bioinspired structural color materials with environmental contexts, with a particular emphasis on their application in camouflage. Finally, the paper outlines persisting challenges and suggests future development trends in the camouflage field via bioinspired structural color. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
